Title: Favorite Artists Top 50
Post by: KevShmev on April 14, 2010, 09:18:42 AM
I haven't done a top 50 list since January, and for the fifth installment, I decided to tackle a monster of one...listing my 50 favorite bands/solo artists.  Like before, this is for fun, to generate discussion, and hopefully it will get some into bands they aren't into already, or something like that.  I probably won't necessarily do 5 at a time like I did before, but maybe do a few less each time, while maybe doing more frequent updates (like, maybe two a day, if the mood strikes me ;)).  Here goes...

50. Simon & Garfunkel

I was always a fan of their popular songs, but never went out of my way to listen to the others until a few years ago, and they have a lot of overlooked gems that aren't that popular, to go along with their many recognized classics.  Two great voices, great songwriters and great lyrics...that is a can't miss scenario.

Favorite albums: Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme and Bridge over Troubled Water

Favorite songs: "Bridge over Troubled Water," "The Boxer," "The Dangling Conversation," "I am a Rock," "America," The Sound of Silence," "Mrs. Robinson" and "Cecilia."

49. Boston

Boston is the first classic rock band I really went crazy over.  Their self-titled debut remains one of all-time favorite records, and the three albums after that, while all decreasing in quality chronologically, have plenty of merit to them, as well.  Brad Delp is one of the best rock singers ever, and Tom Scholz's innovative wall of guitars sound is instantly recognizable.

Favorite albums: Boston and Don't Look Back

Favorite songs: "Foreplay/Long Time," "Hitch a Ride," "A Man I'll Never Be," "More Than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," "Hollyann," "Don't Be Afraid," "Rock and Roll Band," "Don't Look Back" and "Smokin'."

48. Metallica

This is where some go, "OMG, you like 47 bands more than Metallica," and where I go, "Absolutely."  But considering how many bands I love, being number 48 is no shame at all.  I actually didn't get into Metallica until the spring of 1996, right before Load came out.  For years, "Wherever I May Roam" was the only song of theirs I liked at all.  Then I heard all of Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.

Favorite albums: Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning

Favorite songs: "Fade to Black," "Master of Puppets," "Orion," "Disposable Heroes," "The Call of Ktulu," "Wherever I May Roam," "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Leper Messiah," "Creeping Death," "Don't Tread on Me," and "The Shortest Straw."

I will be following this.

Oh, and someone should also try doing a "Top # Musicians" list.

Great idea Kev. It's going to be nice to see variety in styles of bands and what they bring to why you love music.  Already Simon and Garfunkel to Metallica. :tup

I love Simon and Garfunkel's back catalog.  All five of their albums are essential IMO.

I don't know if "dive" would be good terminology. Their self-titled debut is a must have as it is one of the single greatest classic rock albums ever recorded. While some other stuff is good, it's okay if you decide to skip it.

Glad to see interest here. :)

Unlike some other top whatever lists, this one is more about the journey, seeing what bands are in it and talking about them along the way, as opposed to the suspense of what number 1 will be, as I am sure anyone who knows me knows what band will be number 1. ;) :lol

Anyway....

47. Godspeed You! Black Emperor

It seems odd for a band that I only have 14 songs by to be in the top 50, but then again, the average length of all of those songs is just shy of 23 minutes!  GY!BE is a master of tension and build-up, practically every song having monster build-ups and slow comedowns.  When asked to describe what they sound like, I usually say that their music would be the soundtrack to a movie on the end of the world.

Favorite albums: Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven and Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls

Favorite songs: "Storm," "Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls," "Sleep," "Static," "Antennas to Heaven" and "Motherfucker=Redeemer (Part One)."

46. Wilco

Wilco is a band I always sorta liked, but when I saw them live in 2007, I went from sorta liking them to really liking them.  Great, great live band!  They sound very much like old school rock and roll, but with twinges of country, alt rock, and indie rock in there.  Their songs almost always feature infectious melodies, and I love the frequent use of both piano and acoustic guitar.

Favorite albums: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Summerteeth

Favorite songs: "I am Trying to Break Your Heart," "Misunderstood," "Muzzle of Bees," "How to Fight Loneliness," "Via Chicago," "Poor Places," "Ashes of American Flags," "Impossible Germany," "Radio Cure," "Sunken Treasure" and "Jesus, Etc."

45. Sigur Rós

THE definition of a mood band.  When in the right mood, there are few bands that sound as jaw-droppingly great as Sigur Rós.  I have no idea what they are singing about, but it doesn't really matter.  What matters are the emotions and the moods that are the result of the overall package.  Seeing them close their show a few years ago with "Popplagiđ" was like witnessing a religious experience out of the Bible.  It was that amazing.

Favorite albums: ( ) and Takk...

Favorite songs: "Popplagiđ," "Olsen Olsen," "Glosoli," "Milano," "Samskeyti," "Njósnavélin," "Hjartad hamast" and "Hoppipolla."

I like Wilco but I think I like Son Volt more.

EDIT: I also swear that I once remember reading Kurt Cobain say that the opening riff to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was basically the chorus riff of "More Than A Feeling" grunge-ified.  Listen closely -- it's there.

44. David Bowie

It looks weird to see a musical genius like Bowie this low, but the simple truth is, I haven't listened to enough of his material to rate him any higher.  Most of what I do have, I like a lot; I simply haven't gone any further...yet.  If you ask me why, I have no good answer.  I simply haven't gotten around to digger deeper, but once I do, I expect him to move fast up my list.  I cannot stress enough how utterly brilliant Low is.  If you are not familiar with Bowie, check that record out.  It will blow you away.

Favorite albums: Low and "Heroes"

Favorite songs: "Life On Mars," "Ziggy Stardust," "Let's Dance," "Space Oddity," "Warszawa," "Sound and Vision," "Young Americans," "China Girl" and "Always Crashing in the Same Car."

43. Talking Heads

I love the quirkiness and just fun nature of Talking Heads' music.  I once saw Remain in Light referred to as unintentional genius, and I think that is a very apt description of one of rock's all-time great records.  It's funny, because, as a kid, I knew their big hits that were played on MTV non-stop back when I was a kid in the early 80s, but I never bothered checking out their non-hits until the last few years....and, boy, am I glad I did.

Favorite albums: Remain in Light and Fear of Music

Favorite songs: "Burning Down the House," "Cities," "Once in a Lifetime," "Houses in Motion," "I Zimbra," "Wild Wild Life," "Crosseyed and Painless," "The Great Curve" and "Heaven."

42. The Who

Yes, this is really The Who all the way down at number 42.  I love The Who, but the fact of the matter is that I almost never listen to them anymore, so I really can't put them higher than bands I have been listening to with much more frequency in recent years.  To use a term my cousin coined a while back, The Who, to me, are like a retired favorite: I still think they are awesome, but I burned out on them many, many years ago, to the point where they only get the occasional token listens now, save for a few songs.

Favorite albums: Quadrophenia and Tommy

Favorite songs: "Baba O'Riley," "I Can See for Miles," "We're Not Gonna Take It," "Love, Reign O'er Me," "Overture/It's a Boy," "Bargain," "Doctor Jimmy," "Amazing Journey/Sparks," "Squeeze Box" and "The Real Me."

41. Heart

Heart is one of those bands that has two distinctly different sounds and eras: the classic rock era of the 70s, and the pop rock era of the 80s. I like both.  I loved the 80s hits growing up, I was turned on to their 70s classic rock staples in the 90s, and I grew to love them more as a band when I dug deeper in the 00s.  Dreamboat Annie is a record that should be in the collection of anyone who likes rock music.  And Ann Wilson is one of rock's all-time great singers.  The note she holds at the end of "Dream of the Archer" is just absurd, and her work in the middle of "Mistral Wind" is equally impressive.

Favorite albums: Dreamboat Annie and Little Queen

Favorite songs: "Mistral Wind," "Crazy on You," "Dreamboat Annie," "These Dreams," "Dream of the Archer," "Magic Man," "Nothing At All," "Soul of the Sea," "Barracuda" and "There's the Girl."

Gonna do a second update today.

40. dredg

dredg was hard for me to accurately rank.  After being a casual fan for a couple of years, I finally went crazy over them the last six months or so, and they have been one of my most-listened-to bands since.  However, since I am still in the honeymoon phase with them, in essence, I am conservatively ranking them, as it wouldn't be fair to put them ahead of a lot of longtime favorites this quickly.  Having said that, in a year, if they are still sounding this good, I would likely rank them much higher.  Time will tell...

Favorite albums: The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion and El Cielo

Favorite songs: "Quotes," "The Canyon Behind Her," "Gathering Pebbles," "Sang Real," "Ireland," "Mourning This Morning," "Information," "Matroshka (The Ornament)," "Triangle" and "Cartoon Showroom."

39. Billy Joel

One of my favorite voices in music, Billy Joel has more good songs that I can count.  There isn't anything particular fancy that I can say about Joel, except that he is a great songwriter, a terrific singer, and a helluva piano player.

Favorite albums: The Stranger and Turnstiles

Favorite songs: "Allentown," "Captain Jack," "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," "The Stranger," "The Entertainer," "Prelude/Angry Young Man," "The Downeaster Alexa," "Uptown Girl," "Piano Man" and "New York State of Mind."

I feel the same way about The Who...once they were my favorite band...but I burned out on them in High School in favor of Pink Floyd, and then DT.  Quadrophenia is the only album of theirs I spin with any regularity.  Also good to see Billy Joel and dredg.

Orcus, love your new pic!

Kev,  I cant say enough about Bowie.  How many style changes, musically and with fashion.  i still love to hear new music from him cause you never know what you're going to get.

Heart, the best female vocals in the biz.  Saw them 4 times and they never disapointed.  I keep saying to my wife that I'd like to take her to one of their shows.  She's never seen them.

I might need to ask your opinion on Bowie. I've found that I really, really, really like Life on Mars, but I don't know much about the rest of his catalogue. How did you start to get into him? Is that a good-ish meter for the rest of his catalogue? That you've heard, natch.

Life on Mars? is probably my favorite Bowie song, even though I've only really listened to Hunky Dory and the Life Aquatic Soundtrack.  Hunky Dory is an exceptional album if you have only heard Life on Mars? and nothing else from it.

Low, "Heroes", Hunky Dory and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars were the most recommended records, so those are the ones I checked out.  I find the first two of those to be the best; the second two, despite having some terrific individual songs, are a bit uneven, although I admittedly haven't listened to both from start to finish in a while.

Update...

38. Jethro Tull

You gotta love a rock band that features both a folksy sound and a flute.  That is major win right there.  Tull has always been one of those bands I go through a big phase with about once a year.  It usually lasts a week or two, and I always wonder why I don't listen to them more.  That has been my routine with them for nearly 20 years.  Kind of weird, but it is what it is.

Favorite albums: Aqualung and Songs from the Wood

Favorite songs: "Mother Goose," "The Whistler," "Heavy Horses," "Boureé," "Aqualung," "Farm on the Freeway," "Locomotive Breath," "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day" and "Cross-Eyed Mary."

37. The Police

My first favorite band ever.  Back in 1983, Synchronicity was the first vinyl I ever owned, and I played it to death.  And MTV always played some of their videos from previous records, so it was easy to be a fan.  Stewart Copeland is one of the best rock drummers ever.  And it is worth mentioning that I have always hated, and will always hate, "Roxanne"; what a terrible, terrible song.  But a band with this many good songs is allowed one stinker.

Favorite albums: Synchronicity and Ghost in the Machine

Favorite songs: "Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Spirits in the Material World," "Walking on the Moon," "Synchronicity," "Synchronicity II," "Invisible Sun," "When the World is Running Down," "Walking in Your Footsteps" and "Murder by Numbers."

36. Triumph

Gotta love some straight-forward, kick ass hard rock.  Their peak was short (1979-1984) was short, but stellar, nonetheless.  Four of the five albums released in that span are damn good, with the other still being pretty good.  In the annals of rock guitarists, Rik Emmett is still the most criminally underrated; he is nothing short of outstanding, and his playing, while a bit showy, never sounded too showy, if you know what I mean.

Favorite albums: Allied Forces and Thunder Seven

Favorite songs: "Ordinary Man," "A World of Fantasy," "Just a Game," "Fight the Good Fight," "Killing Time," "Never Surrender," "Blinding Light Show," "Hold On," "Little Boy Blues" and "Magic Power."

Because it isn't one of my favorite albums or songs of theirs.  I know the average prog fan goes crazy over it, it being a 40 minute plus song and all, but I have never found it to be that great as a whole.  I love the first 10-11 minutes and then I lose interest.  Not that the rest is necessarily uninteresting, but something has to be consistently great for me to invest 40 minutes in it every single listen, and that just doesn't pass the test.

35. The Flaming Lips

Despite not being a fan of very much of their pre-'99 material, I still love this band on the strength of their last four albums, all of which are tremendous in different ways.  If you have never given this band much of a chance, it is all about The Soft Bulletin.  In 50 years, a new generation will be listening to that record, and it will still sound just as innovative, daring and spectacular as it does today.  And if you ever have a chance to see them live, do not hesitate...buy yourself a ticket and get ready for some fun.  Remember, music is supposed to be fun, and no band's live show embodies that more than the Lips' live shows do.

Favorite albums: The Soft Bulletin and At War with the Mystics

Favorite songs: "The Gash," "Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung," "The Sound of Failure," "One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21," "The Spark That Bled," "What is the Light?," "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell," "Sleeping on the Roof," "Vein of Stars" and "My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion."

34. King Crimson

Crimson is one of those bands that, for me, when they connect, they knock it out of the park, and when they miss, they miss badly.  Their great albums are ones I cannot get enough of sometimes, and many of their lesser albums are ones that I probably wouldn't care if I never heard them again.  Not that they are bad or anything; it's just that their best albums are sooooo much better, when I am in a King Crimson phase, I am going for the good stuff, ya know?

Favorite albums: The Power to Believe, Red and Discipline

Favorite songs: "Starless," "The Power to Believe II," "The ConstruKction of Light," "One More Red Nightmare," "Thela Hun Ginjeet," "Eyes Wide Open," "Elephant Talk," "The Talking Drum," "Level Five," "The Sheltering Sky" and "Dangerous Curves."

33. Van Halen

Similar to The Who for me in that they are also like a retired favorite.  I have been listening to this band almost as long as any other, except for a handful, and I still get a kick out of their music, especially during the summer.  I am a fan of all three eras: the Roth era, the Hagar era, and, yes, the Cherone era.  It is too bad that Eddie Van Halen is such a train wreck, as they probably still had plenty of good music left in them, but have been nothing but a nostalgia act, when acting like a band, for well over 10 years now.

Favorite albums: I, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and Fair Warning

Favorite songs: "Pleasure Dome," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "Once," "Mean Street," "Unchained," "Runnin' with the Devil," "Dreams," "Humans Being," "Poundcake," "Feelin'," "Panama" and "Little Dreamer."

Two more today...

32. Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Even though they symbolize what a lot of people hate about prog rock - pretentious, arrogant, bombastic, over the top, etc. - I still love their music.  Their first four albums were mostly money, and the underrated Black Moon showed their ability to write well-crafted shorter, catchy songs.  I remember going completely ape shit over them when I got the Atlantic Years double CD compilation sometime in late '92/early '93.  Those CDs dominated my CD player for many, many months.

Favorite albums - Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Black Moon and Trilogy

Favorite songs - "Take a Pebble," "Tarkus," "From the Beginning," "Trilogy," "Pirates," "Knife-edge," "The Endless Enigma," "Paper Blood," "Karn Evil 9" and "Romeo and Juliet."

31. Jeff Beck

Arguably the greatest rock guitarist that ever lived, I love how Jeff Beck's music never seems to sound like that stereotypical guitar hero instrumental stuff that certain other guitarists' work does.  From the fusion-driven albums of the 70s to his more electronic-driven music of the modern era, he has tons of awesome tunes.  Thankfully, I will finally be seeing him live...in 11 days. :)

Favorite albums - Blow by Blow, Wired, Who Else! and You Had It Coming

Favorite songs - "Scatterbrain," "Roy's Toy," Space for the Papa," "Freeway Jam," "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," "Sophie," "Diamond Dust," "Nadia," "THX138," "Too Much to Lose" and "Angel (Footsteps)."

To put aside any teases, leaving EPs, outtake CDs or whatever out of the equation, there is no artist in my top 50 with only one or two studio albums.  Not a single one.  So, yeah, no Jeff Buckley, LTE, Arcade Fire, etc.

ELP should be a tad higher, but I'll accept it.

Also, no love for anything from Brain Salad Surgery (Other than Karn Evil 9)? That entire album is just one eargasm after another, culminating in one of the best pieces of music ever written.

I love "Jerusalem," "Toccata" and "Still...You Turn Me On" all quite a bit, but I am trying to limit the favorite songs for each artist to around 10-12, give or take.  And I am not fond of the 2nd Impression of "Karn Evil 9," but both parts of the 1st Impression and the 3rd Impression are aces! :)

And at one point, ELP was in my top 5....back in the mid 90s.

There ya go.

And I don't see the comparison made often, but I have always thought of DT as a modern day ELP in the sense that both bands are very progressive, both are known for their chops perhaps more than anything else, and both often get falsely accused of lacking melodies and songwriting ability.

Not so much.  I am not fond of much from either Lizard or In the Wake of Poseidon, and while I like Larks' Tongues in Aspic, I don't go bat shit over it like a lot of people do.  Oh, and Starless and Bible Black has its moments, but overall, I find it to be lacking, as well.

I have always suspected that the lack of an electric guitar (outside of a few cases) makes it hard for some to really get into them.

I don't think its the lack of electric guitar Kev...I just sort of lost interest in 40-minute organ-dominated songs.  I'm kind of sick of organs in rock music outside of very well-used instances.

I love Lizard, it's without a doubt my favorite King Crimson release. Although I adore ITCOTKC and Larks tongues almost equally. 30. Neal Morse

My thoughts on Neal Morse haven't changed much in recent years: I love his natural singing voice, and he has an uncanny knacks for combining progressive elements with very catchy melodies.  I think he has the tendency to repeat himself too much times, both from album to album and with reprises on the same album, but his somewhat heavy-handed religious lyrics do not bother me most of the time.  Love him or hate him, there is no denying his passion for music.  He puts everything he's got into all of his work.

Favorite albums: ?, Testimony and Neal Morse

Favorite songs: "Everything is Wrong," "The Storm Before the Calm," "12," "In the Fire," "Solid as the Sun," "Emma," "Somber Days," "Moving in My Heart," "Sleeping Jesus," "The Conclusion" and "Break of Day."

29. Spock's Beard

Ah, what could have been.  You can't help but wonder how the band's catalog would look right now had Neal Morse not left the band and they had continued on the roll they were on, having done their two best records right before he departed.  But, it is what it is, and we are still left with a pretty darn good catalog of music.  I have to admit that my interest is low for their new album, as they have gone downhill with each post-Neal release, IMO, but there is always hope that they will catch lightning in a bottle again.

Favorite albums: V, Snow and Beware of Darkness

Favorite songs: "The Light," "The Doorway," "At the End of the Day," "Waste Away," "Solitary Soul," "Wind at My Back," "Harm's Way," "East of Eden, West of Memphis," "Flow," "I Will Go," "The Great Nothing" and "Ghosts of Autumn."

28. Styx

A longtime favorite.  For a brief spell back in '90/'91, they were my 2nd favorite band.  I always loved their prog-lite approach...it was like they had the vibe and drama of prog, but never went overboard with the song structures or playing.  They just had tons of catchy songs, and the vocals...my god, the vocals.  Dennis DeYoung is hands down one of rock's best vocalists ever, Tommy Shaw has always been tremendous, and James Young could do the occasional good lead vocal.  Together, their harmonies were some of the best the rock genre has ever seen.  It is sad what has become of them in the last decade, with all of the animosity and whatnot, but that doesn't erase all of those good songs.

Favorite albums: The Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight and Equinox

Favorite songs: "Crystal Ball," "Come Sail Away," "Queen of Spades," "Suite Madame Blue," "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)," "Pieces of Eight," "One with Everything," "Dear John," "Mother Dear," "Man in the Wilderness" and "Renegade."

Granted, they aren't much higher then Spock's Beard, and both would even be lower on my list then you placed SB, but I still like them.

Neal would have been much higher on my list five years ago.  Interestingly, when looking at my iTunes, which I started using about three years ago, the other day, I was shocked at how low the play count listens were for him.  I simply don't listen to him nearly as much as I used to.  ? has by far the most listens, and how few listens all of the songs on One have shocked me.  I loved that album when it came out, but I guess it hasn't aged well, otherwise I would listen to it more often.  All of the songs on it are under five listens each.  Not surprisingly, the Neal song with the most listens on my iTunes is "Everything is Wrong."  I love that song.  :coolio

27. Queensr˙che

Despite the debacle they have turned into lately, QR still makes it this high, merely on the strength of their material from '84-'94.  Rage for Order through Promised Land, in particular, is a helluva four-album run, and Warning is a good record, as well.  But, for me, it is all about Promised Land; that is hands down one of my 20 favorite records ever.  That is the album that made me go from "this band is pretty good" to "this band is damn good."

Favorite albums: Promised Land, Operation: Mindcrime and Empire

Favorite songs: "Anybody Listening?," "Suite Sister Mary," "Promised Land," "Lady Jane," "Out of Mind," "The Mission," "Screaming in Digital," "Empire," "Speak," "Damaged," "Someone Else?," "Eyes of a Stranger" and "I Dream in Infrared."

26. The Moody Blues

Another sort-of retired favorite, this is probably the "retired favorite" I listen to the most.  A great band to just chill out or relax to, the Moodies always seem to get unfairly overlooked when talking about the pioneers of progressive rock, but they were one of the first prog rock bands, and a terrific one at that.  Their first seven albums, all done in the span of six years (!!), collectively were a remarkable achievement.  Their more pop rock material from the late 70s and 80s produced some terrific songs, too, even if the overall consistency wasn't there as much.

Favorite albums: In Search of the Lost Chord, To Our Children's Children's Children and Every Good Boy Deserves Favour

Favorite songs: "Legend of a Mind," "Ride My See Saw," "Gypsy," "Your Wildest Dreams," "Voices in the Sky," "Visions of Paradise," "Beyond," "I'm Just a Singer (in a Rock N' Roll Band)," "Question," "Have You Heard/The Voyage," "The Story in Your Eyes" and "Gemini Dream."

25. Frank Zappa

I wouldn't even know where to begin in describing Zappa's music.  Those who are familiar with at least a decent amount of his music will know what I am talking about.  I have only heard around 11 or 12 of his records, which is barely scratching the surface.  Odds are that I will never hear it all, but most of what I have heard, I like a lot.  A true musical genius in every sense of the word, Zappa was.

Favorite albums: Hot Rats, Apostrophe (') and The Grand Wazoo

Favorite songs: "Peaches en Regalia," ""Willie the Pimp," "Zoot Allures," "Penguin in Bondage," "Watermelon in Easter Hay," "Son of Mr. Green Genes," "Apostrophe'," "The Grand Wazoo," "St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast," "Father O'Blivion" and "Crew Slut."

Out of curiosity, why would you be sure I am not a Christian?  I am, in fact.

As for the lyrics, they are definitely not too preachy, especially when compared to worship music and stuff like that, but I can see why those who aren't religious would think they are.  I do wish Neal would be a little more diverse with his lyrics, but his religious lyrics generally do not bother me, except in a few isolated cases.

Good stab.  The lyrical content and overall subject matter on that CD is a major turnoff.  The music was already a big drop-off from his usual greatness, the last song notwithstanding, and then it just gets dragged down ever further by the lyrics.

Well, yeah, but the turnoff is more about the album being centered around a well-known antisemite like Martin Luther (No, I am not Jewish :lol).  But I don't want this thread to turn into a religious discussion, so I digress.

24. Death Cab for Cutie

My favorite discovery of the last two years, this is a band I could see continuing to climb up the ladder in the years to come.  Ben Gibbard has quickly become one of my three or four favorite lyricists; he has such a unique way of writing.  And their songs always manage to be catchy and infectious, even the mellow, melancholy ones, to go along with their upbeat ones.  The combination of their melodies and great lyrics results in absolutely wonderful music.

Favorite albums: Transatlanticism, The Photo Album and Plans

Favorite songs: "I Was a Kaleidoscope," "What Sarah Said," "Transatlanticism," "A Movie Script Ending," "My Mirror Speaks," "The New Year," "Brothers on a Hotel Bed," "Styrofoam Plates," "Crooked Teeth" and "Why You'd Want to Live Here."

23. Black Sabbath

The greatness of some bands go without saying..Black Sabbath is one of those bands.  Those first six albums...my goodness, if anyone who likes hard rock and/or metal can listen to those first six albums and not have their face melted many times, then they should have their man card revoked. :p  I am not overly wild about much after those first six albums, Heaven and Hell being the big exception, but those first six albums plus that one Dio record are more than enough to earn them this spot.

Favorite albums: Black Sabbath, Paranoid and Sabotage

Favorite songs: "War Pigs," "Fairies Wear Boots," "Sleeping Village/Warning," "Children of the Sea," "Under the Sun," "Black Sabbath," "Meglomania," "Wheels of Confusion," "Hand of Doom," "Solitude" and "Heaven and Hell."

22. Camel

Now we are talking great 70s prog, but without the excessive song arrangements or overblown solos.  Not that I mind either of those things, when done well, of course, but Camel managed to excel at producing terrific prog rock despite not having to rely on either of those traits.  I'll take their first four albums vs. those of just about any other band; those four albums really are that good.  While the consistency wasn't there after Moonmadness, they still managed to write plenty of great songs since.

Favorite albums: Moonmadness, Mirage and The Snow Goose

Favorite songs: "Another Night," "Lunar Sea," "Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider," "Air Born," "Rhayader," "Supertwister," "Earthrise," "Ice," "Mystic Queen," "The Snow Goose," "Never Let Go" and "Lady Fantasy."

21. Judas Priest

The first metal band I really loved.  Even before I really got into metal, I liked a lot of Priest.  They are unique in that pretty much every Priest record has at least two or three Priest classics on it, even on their worst albums like Turbo and Ram It Down.  I finally saw them live last summer, and while Rob Halford's voice ain't what it used to be, it was still great to finally see them.

Favorite albums: Sad Wings of Destiny, Stained Class and Screaming for Vengeance

Favorite songs: "Beyond the Realms of Death," "Sinner," "Desert Plains," "Victim of Changes," "Dream Deceiver/Deceiver," "Bloodstone," "The Rage," "The Ripper," "Run of the Mill," "A Touch of Evil" and "Before the Dawn."

20. Muse

Dramatic hard rock that you can sometimes dance to...talk about a great combination!  Muse is unique for me as they are one of the very few bands I saw while still in the honeymoon phase with.  I got into them in the summer of '06, and they were here in September '06, so I was still in that "going hog wild over this great new band I just discovered" phase when I saw them live.  Can't beat that.  And I will be seeing them again this November, which should be another treat, as they absolutely slay live.

Favorite albums: Black Holes and Revelations, Origin of Symmetry and Absolution

Favorite songs: "Take a Bow," "Map of the Problematique," "Space Dementia," "Butterflies & Hurricanes," "Stockholm Syndrome," "Knights of Cydonia," "Apocalypse Please," "Thoughts of a Dying Atheist," "Citizen Erased," "Darkshines," "I Belong to You" and "Bliss."

19. Transatlantic

How does a band with only three studio albums end up in the top 20?  By making three absolutely phenomenal records.  Check.  It is mind-bogglingly scary to think of how prolific and how great this band could be, if they went full-time.  It will never happen, but, oh man, just the thought of it can't help but make you smile.

Favorite albums: SMPTe, Bridge Across Forever and The Whirlwind

Favorite songs: "All of the Above," "My New World," "Stranger in Your Soul," "We All Need Some Light," "The Whirlwind," "Spinning" and "Duel with the Devil."

Curious then to know your opinion on Dream Theater's "Muse influence."  I'm sure the topic was discussed ad nauseam during the time of 8V and SC, but I wasn't on the boards yet at that point.

I think Muse's influence on DT is more than obvious on a couple of songs, most notably "Never Enough," where the main riff is eerily similar to "Stockholm Syndrome"'s.

I couldn't rationalize putting TA any higher, given that they do only have three albums, and given how prolific pretty much all of the artists above them are.

I don't really like Muse, but i can see the reason you have for putting them there.
Overall, interesting choices.

Right.  I was more getting at whether you liked the influence or not.  Obviously, PoW has that danceable hard rock vibe you described as a Muse trademark, and I know a lot of people have nothing good to say about that particular song (I like PoW, though, as well as NE).

I generally don't mind the influence, although they go a little overboard with how blatant it is at times.  Being influenced is one thing; blatantly borrowing riffs or melodies is another.  "Prophets of War" isn't that good of a song (although not as bad as many say it is), but I don't think its failings were the result of the supposed alleged Muse influence.  The "dancey" parts of the song are probably the best parts of the song, quite frankly.

Another update today:

18. Dave Matthews Band

Yes, that's right: Dave Matthews Band.  I am always surprised more people here don't like them, but I wonder how many have actually given them a real chance, outside of maybe hearing their hits or hearing them in the background at a friend's house or something.  I was smack in the middle of my prog snob phase in the late 90s when I got into them, which was quite an achievement.  Despite not being a "prog" band, their music is actually quite progressive.  I would recommend anyone starting off with the three-song run that did the trick for me: "The Stone," "Crush" and "The Dreaming Tree."  Those 25 minutes of music should impress anyone.  After that, check out their Central Park DVD.  You'll be a fan for life.  The interesting thing about this band for me is, I have seen them five times, and each time, it was with someone different...my younger brother, a cousin, a friend, and two different girlfriends.

Favorite albums: Before These Crowded Streets, Under the Table and Dreaming and Crash

Favorite songs: "The Dreaming Tree," "Crush," "The Stone," "Two Step," "Don't Drink the Water," "Dancing Nancies," "Warehouse," "Proudest Monkey," "Lie in Our Graves," "Spaceman," "Bartender" and "Lying in the Hands of God."

17. Peter Gabriel

Look up the phrase musical genius and next to it will be a picture of Peter Gabriel, unless you have an outdated dictionary. ;)  This guy's talent and greatness is undeniable, and he is still going, despite being in his 60s now.  Leaving Genesis was quite a daring move, but his solo career has been hugely successful, and for that, he deserves major kudos.  Not many could have pulled it off.  And in the late 70s/early 80s, when a lot of prog bands were either dying off or going a more mainstream pop rock route, Peter Gabriel continued to be innovative, creative and extremely progressive.  He is the essence of progressive rock, in the truest sense of the word.  I still remember watching the Secret World Live DVD for the first time; it was like someone was opening up a window to his greatness and all of a sudden, the sun, which had always been there, was hitting me right in the face.

Favorite albums: Up, Security and III/Melt

Favorite songs: "San Jacinto," "Washing of the Water," "Sky Blue," "I Grieve," "Red Rain," "Biko," "Family Snapshot," "Moribund the Burgermeister," "Darkness," "Signal to Noise," "Mercy Street" and "Secret World."

16. Opeth

I probably don't have to go into too much detail here, as I have outlined in various threads over the years what I love about this band.  Their ability to combine bone-crushing metal featuring growling with beautiful acoustic passages featuring clean vocals separates them from every other metal band I have ever heard that features growling.  Six years ago, the idea of a band featuring growling being this high up on my list seemed absurd.  Then I was introduced Opeth, and all of the misconceptions went out the window.

Favorite albums: Still Life, Blackwater Park and Watershed

Favorite songs: "The Drapery Falls," "Bleak," "Deliverance," "A Fair Judgement," "Moonlapse Vertigo," "Face of Melinda," "Isolation Years," "White Cluster," "To Rid the Disease," "Harvest," "The Lotus Eater" and "Ghost of Perdition."

Weird, I don't care for Genesis at all.

God I love Peter Gabriel.  I'd certainly rank him higher than Opeth.  What are your feelings on Us?  Its one of my favorite Gabriel albums and IMO, definitely his most underrated.
Title: Re: Favorite Artists Top 50
Post by: KevShmev on April 22, 2010, 09:48:06 PM
Us is good, but I think pretty much every song he played off of it was much better live.  The production and sound wasn't as crisp and smooth as his other albums, and that hurt the overall product.  Live, those songs just sprang to life.

15. Genesis

Genesis is worthy of a top 20 spot, merely on the strength of one of the best five album runs ever, from 1972 to 1976, and the rest of their catalog, some of which I like, some of which I don't like that much, is just icing on the cake.  Like Camel, Genesis was old school prog, but without the overplaying.  Oh sure, they had tons of long instrumental passages, but you never got the impression that they did them to show off.  Tony Banks is easily one of the best rock keyboard players ever, Peter Gabriel's greatness on the early stuff goes without saying, and Steve Hackett is the unsung hero of their classic material.  Some mistakenly think the band started going downhill a bit when Gabriel left the band, but that is not true; the slide didn't begin until Hackett departed.  Having grown up on their 80s pop rock stuff, some of it still holds a bit of nostalgic charm for me, while the rest of it, not so much.

Favorite albums: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Selling England by the Pound and A Trick of the Tail

Favorite songs: "The Cinema Show," "Firth of Fifth," "Supper's Ready," "In the Cage," "The Lamia," "One for the Vine," "Fly on a Windshield," "Robbery, Assault and Battery," "The Knife," "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" and "Can-Utility and the Coastliners."

14. Led Zeppelin

As overplayed as they are, it is sometimes easy to forget just how incredible they were, but fresh listens are always like a jolt of reality.  Really, they are another of those bands, like Sabbath, whose greatness almost speaks for itself.  To many, they owned the 70s, and considering that was the best music for rock music ever, that is quite an achievement.  It almost seems crazy for a serious music fan to not be a big Zeppelin fan.  I sometimes wonder what would have become of Led Zeppelin in the 80s had John Bonham not died when he did...

Favorite albums: Houses of the Holy, II and Physical Graffiti

Favorite songs: "Over the Hills and Far Away," "The Rain Song," "Fool in the Rain," "Immigrant Song," "Ten Years Gone," "How Many More Times," "Stairway to Heaven," "No Quarter," "What Is and What Should Never Be," "In My Time of Dying" and "Dazed and Confused."

13. Blue Öyster Cult

One of the most hard-working and underrated rock bands of all-time, B.O.C. is one of those bands that has always managed to bust out at least a few great songs on every single record they have done, even the least best ones.  They have a sound and style I have always just dug like crazy.  Buck Dharma is one of the best rock guitarists on the planet (and a helluva nice guy), and their dark and creepy lyrical content fits their music so well.  B.O.C. is a longtime favorite that still gets played in my CD player quite often.  To some, they are that band that did that song with the cowbell that had Will Ferrell dancing around like a fool on SNL, but to me and many others, they are so much more.

Favorite albums: Cultosaurus Erectus, Imaginos and Secret Treaties

Favorite songs: "Black Blade," "Take Me Away," "In the Presence of Another World," "Then Came the Last Days of May," "Deadline," "Veteran of the Psychic Wars," "Golden Age of Leather," "Shooting Shark," "Buck's Boogie," "Flaming Telepaths," "Harvest Moon" and "E.T.I."

Quite a bit.  Didn't make my LZ favorite songs list there, but if I ever did a LZ top 50 songs list, I suspect it would probably be in the 25-35 range.  Just a guess. :p

Jeez, nowhere to go but up after that, as that is easily one of their two least best CDs.  Time to get to work!

Great list so far.

Thanks, guys.  Good to hear, j! :)

And I really don't put too much thought into it.  It literally took me about 15 minutes to make up this list.  If I did it again in a month, it would probably be about the same, with the top 20 probably being about the same, and maybe a few bands in the 21-50 range moving up or down a spot or two, depending on my mood that day.

Another update coming later today, when I have more time to do a write-up...

12. Kansas

Sometimes, time can make your love for a band wane, due to overplaying them, or maybe their music just not aging well, but Kansas is one of those bands that is the opposite of that.  Every time I listen to them, their music sounds just as fresh and great as it did back in the day when I got into them.  Well, except for the first time I heard "Miracles out of Nowhere," which had my jaw on the floor for days (as did most of Leftoverture, quite honestly).  I love their American version of 70s prog rock, featuring a violin just as much as, if not more than, guitar.  And Steve Walsh...what can you say about him?  In his heyday, I would argue that there was no better rock singer ever.  There are a couple I would put on his level, but no one was better.  And I gotta give a shout-out to Kerry Livgren, who will go down as the songwriting master of this band.

Favorite albums: Leftoverture, Point of Know Return and Masque

Favorite songs: "Cheyenne Anthem," "Miracles out of Nowhere," "The Pinnacle," "Song for America," "Closet Chronicles," "Dust in the Wind," "Magnum Opus," "The Wall," "Journey from Mariabronn," "Icarus" and "Carry On Wayward Son."

11. Devin Townsend

I don't even know where to begin in talking about what I love about his music the most.  His voice.  His songwriting.  His wall of sound.  His quirky sense of humor that often finds its way into his music.  So many great things about him and his music.  He was definitely somewhat of an acquired taste when I first heard him, as his screaming vocals and that wall of sound took some time to get into, but his music is extremely addictive once you get past any barriers that might be there.  I know this will be blasphemy to some, but he is almost like a modern-day Zappa to me.  Not necessarily in a prolific sense (not that Devin isn't prolific, but Zappa was a whole other beast in that regard compared to almost anyone else), but in their approaches to music, their personalities, their ability to successfully integrate their senses of humor into their music, etc.  And I love how each of his albums always seem to have a different kind of feel; Terria sounds like the earth; Ocean Machine sounds like the water; Infinity sounds like a Broadway show on crack; etc.  Also, if I had to list my top 10 moments in any song ever, the middle vocal section of "The Fluke" would make the cut; that is so wacky, yet so awesome.  Add it all up and it equals one undeniable truth: Devin is The Man!

Favorite albums: Terria, Addicted and Infinity

Favorite songs: "Truth," "Bend It Like Bender," "Earth Day," "The Fluke," "Deep Peace," "Addicted," "Pixillate," "Heaven Send," "The Death of Music," "Noisy Pink Bubbles," "Tiny Tears," "Supercrush" and "Canada."

There is a disturbing lack of "Deadhead" in your Devy post.  I've only been a Devin fan since December of last year, but he's just really, really, REALLY good once you get past the screaming vocals (if extreme vocal styles are still a shock to the system, luckily Opeth helped me out in this regard).  Addicted is such a perfect album, and he really is like a modern-day Zappa, except he 1. Doesn't have like 700 recordings and 2. Isn't as prolific/well-known.

So yeah, awesome post with Kansas too.  Looking forward to at least 6 of the top ten bands.

Wow, no one predicted the band I have at number 9.

10. U2

Love 'em or hate 'em, you cannot question the greatness of U2.  Everything they have, they worked their butts off for.  I often see people say that U2 just gets good reviews or whatever simply because "they are U2," but that is what happens when you work your butt off, makes tons of great music, build your legend up, and become one of the biggest and best rock bands of all-time.  U2 is in the same stratosphere as bands like Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, which is no easy feat.  To recap what I said about my own personal journey regarding them a while back, they were my favorite band in the late 80s before getting into Floyd in '90 and then Rush in '91, and they went by the wayside for way too long.  For a very long time, U2 simply became a band I still liked, but never listened to anymore.  That changed roughly two years ago when I rediscovered much of their catalog, and then I really went crazy over them again last year when getting into No Line on the Horizon; in particular, I finally really got into Zooropa and Pop, two very experimental, yet very good, CDs.  Say what you want about Bono, but the guy is a phenomenal singer, a great lyricist, and a helluva front man.  And I simply adore The Edge's style and creative guitar playing; the guy is largely responsible for the identifiable musical sound of one of the biggest bands ever, and for that, you must give him his due.

Favorite albums: Achtung Baby, The Joshua Tree, The Unforgettable Fire, War and Rattle and Hum

Favorite songs: "All I Want Is You," "New Year's Day," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Until the End of the World," "Bad," "Running to Stand Still," "Bullet the Blue Sky," "The Fly," "Ultraviolet (Light My Way)," "Where the Streets Have No Name," "City of Blinding Lights," "Magnificent," "The Unforgettable Fire" and "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me."

9. Queen

There will never be another band like Queen.  There can't be.  No one could possibly duplicate the magic that the combination of those four guys brought forth.  Roger Taylor was a rock solid drummer, not to mention a great singer.  Most of the highest highs you hear in Queen's harmonies were Taylor.  Of note, that last "FOR MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE," at the end of the middle section of "Bohemian Rhapsody," that highest voice is Taylor's, not Freddie Mercury's.  John Deacon was quite an underrated bass player, and was a damn good songwriter, too.  Brian May...easily one of my favorite musicians of all time.  Similar to The Edge in the sense that he also has a style and sound that are immediately identifiable.  When he plays something, you know it is him.  And Freddie Mercury.  Freddie Mercury.  I don't think I have to explain what is so great about him to anyone.  Anyone who has heard him sing, or seen footage of him working a crowd, knows all about how great he was.  But all of that talent would go to waste without great songs, which Queen had an abundance of.  And they were unique in that they seldom wrote together; many Queen songs had a single songwriter.  It was almost a contest at times to see who could write the best songs, which obviously pushed them all to write as good a songs as possible.  And who wins?  We, the fans, do.  And did we ever.

Favorite albums: A Night at the Opera, Sheer Heart Attack, Innuendo, II and A Day at the Races

Favorite songs: "Bohemian Rhapsody," "One Vision," "Tie Your Mother Down," "Hammer to Fall," "'39," "Liar," "March of the Black Queen," "Flick of the Wrist," "Fat Bottomed Girls," "Who Wants to Live Forever," "Innuendo," "Death on Two Legs," "White Queen," "Brighton Rock," "Ride the Wild Wind," "In the Lap of the Gods" and "Keep Yourself Alive."

Another update coming later today, where I will probably do 6-8.

Nice to see the Foo Fighters get some love in your honorable mentions list, they're a great band that never gets any love around here because, well... it's a goddamned prog forum. :P

Queen :tup can't say much about U2, honest to god I've only heard a handful of songs, but I don't hate 'em.

Queen and U2.  Two bands willing to take musical risks and reap the rewards.  Can't say enough good things about these two bands.  My one dissapointment was not seeing Queen.  In 1982 on the Hot Space tour, a few older friends went(I was 14 at the time and my parents wouldn't let me go). I got over it and thought, I'll see them on the next tour, which never happened for us in the USA.

Of course.  Queen.  I knew there was some insanely awesome band I was forgetting.  God what a great band.  U2's musical quality to me has gone downhill somewhat but their old stuff is still great.

Foo Fighters are the one of those bands for me that has about 15-20 just very good/great songs, and then not much else that interests me as far as going out of my way to listen to.  And most of those songs are from The Colour and the Shape and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace

Haha, a friend of mine who is a bit older than me had the same thing happened to him.  He skipped seeing them sometime in the early 80s, thinking, "I'll see them the next time they come back to St. Louis."  And they never did.  D'oh! :lol :lol

Of course.  Queen.  I knew there was some insanely awesome band I was forgetting.  God what a great band.  U2's musical quality to me has gone downhill somewhat but their old stuff is still great.

Damn straight on Queen! :)

I generally agree about U2, but most of their stuff is still good, and some of it has been really good.  I mean, not many bands have a prime that lasts more than a decade, so a slight dropoff in quality is to be expected with just about any band, really.

8. Yes

One of the disputed kinds of progressive rock, Yes is a band that just has a vibe quite unlike any other out there.  I credit that to Jon Anderson, whose vision always seemed to drive the band when they were at their best.  God only knows what that vision always was :lol, but it almost always resulted in killer tunes.  Also, I am one of those Yes fans who loves the Rabin era, too.  90125 is a terrific pop rock record, Big Generator was good, too, and Talk is a great record that even got a little progressive, and rocked pretty hard at times, too.  It is a shame what has become of the band in the last few years, but nothing can take away from the all-time greatness of records like Close to the Edge, Fragile, etc.  Simply put, Yes is one of the best bands ever.

Favorite albums: Close to the Edge, The Yes Album, Fragile, Talk and Relayer

Favorite songs: "And You and I," "Starship Trooper," "Close to the Edge," "The Gates of Delirium," "Endless Dream," "Yours Is No Disgrace," "Siberian Khatru," "Roundabout," "South Side of the Sky," "Hearts," "I Am Waiting," "Turn of the Century," "Time and a Word," "Cinema," "Machine Messiah," "I've Seen All Good People" and "The Calling."

7. The Beatles

There are not enough superlatives in the dictionary to sum it all up about the Beatles.  It is hard to believe that all of their music is over 40 years old now, but it still sounds fresh and ground-breaking to these ears.  They are undoubtedly the most influential rock band of all-time and no one is even close to them in that regard.  I still remember discovering the Sgt. Pepper vinyl in my parent's collection when I was 7, being enthralled with both the front and back cover, the latter of which had the lyrics printed on it, and the music...yeah, that was the music I listened to quite frequently when I was a young boy.  I love how so many of their albums basically sound like greatest hits collections.  That is a testament to how many damn good songs they wrote.  I :heart the Beatles. :coolio

Favorite albums: Abbey Road, Revolver, The White Album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Rubber Soul

Favorite songs: "A Day in the Life," "Something," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "For No One," "Doctor Robert," "Glass Onion," "Here Comes the Sun," "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," "Mother Nature's Son," "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "Hey Jude," "Tomorrow Never Knows," "In My Life," "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" and all of Side 2 of Abbey Road.

6. Dream Theater

Do I really need to go into detail about them, considering this is a DT forum?  Probably not, but oh well. :lol  Their unique blend of progressive rock and metal was an instant attraction to me back in 1993 and I have been a fan since.  Interestingly, while their chops are the allure for many, to me, the insane musicianship was merely the icing on the cake.  I instantly loved the songwriting, as well as the melodies provided by James La Brie's voice and by their use of keyboards, courtesy of original keyboard player Kevin Moore.  I feel the band it is at their best when rocking, but also focusing just as much on melody and atmosphere.  And while I have been heavily critical of them at times over the years, they are still one of my favorite bands of all-time, and were a gateway to quite a few bands I now listen to.

Favorite albums: Awake, Images and Words, Scenes from a Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Black Clouds and Silver Linings

Favorite songs: "Scarred," "Voices," "Erotomania," "Learning to Live," "Metropolis, Part 1," "Trial of Tears," "Take the Time," "A Change of Seasons," "Space Dye Vest," "The Spirit Carries On," "Lines in the Sand," "Finally Free," "Surrounded," "Home," "Misunderstood," "Hell's Kitchen," "The Count of Tuscany" and "The Glass Prison."

Okay, okay, I guess I'll spit out the REAL top 5...;)

Here is 5 and 4:

5. Radiohead

Radiohead are the masters of taking a single, simple idea and forming a great song around that one idea; I cannot count how many songs they have like that.  I love how hypnotic their music often is, too.  When I first heard this band back around '93, "Creep" was the song I heard, and I was like, "Meh."  Years later, I heard some of their other stuff and was equally unimpressed.  Then, I remember them being talked about a lot on the old dt.net in '04 and '05, so in the summer of '05, I thought I would give them one more shot.  I borrowed my brother's copy of OK Computer, just put it on one night, and was shocked at how great it sounded.  That CD got a lot of play with me that summer, and it didn't take long for me to plow through the rest of their catalog, most of which I absolutely adored, as well, except for the fairly pedestrian debut album.  And when In Rainbows came out in late '07...there are a handful or two of CDs in my lifetime that I got when they first came out that I became completely addicted to for literally years: In Rainbows was one of those CDs.  In fact, it is still is.  It is still one of the CDs I listen to the most often, 2 1/2 years later.  Seeing them live in '08 was just amazing, and I cannot wait to see what they do next.

Favorite albums: In Rainbows, Kid A, OK Computer, Hail to the Thief and The Bends

Favorite songs: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=8847.0

4. Pink Floyd

This band was life-changing for me.  In 1990, I had just gotten into a little bit of classic rock, following a childhood of oodles of 80s cheese, and my friends Matt and Eric kept telling me how great Pink Floyd was.  More specifically, they kept telling me how great The Wall was, movie and album.  So, one night, I had nothing else to do, so I rented The Wall on VHS from the local video store and was blown away.  I didn't know what in the hell was going on in the movie, but I loved the music like crazy.  I bought my own copy days later and wore it out in no time.  It was also the first CD(s) I bought when I bought my first CD player in '91.  And for about a year, it was nothing but Pink Floyd.  They were my undisputed favorite band for a solid year before being knocked out of the throne.  But I still think just as highly of them now as I did then.  Dark Side of the Moon is, to me, the greatest rock album ever written and recorded; I can't see it ever being topped.  Lastly, seeing them at Arrowhead Stadium in June of '94 remains to this day my all-time favorite concert experience.  You simply had to be there to know how amazing it was.  60,000 people singing along to "Wish You Were Here"...it doesn't get any better than that.  :coolio

Favorite albums: Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, The Division Bell and Animals

Favorite songs: "Time," "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," "Comfortably Numb," "Us and Them," "Mother," "Dogs," "Sheep," "High Hopes," "Brain Damage," "Eclipse," "Poles Apart," "Hey You," "Sorrow," "One of These Days," "Echoes," "Lost for Words," "Wish You Were Here," "Have a Cigar," "Run Like Hell," "Money" and "The Great Gig in the Sky."

Damn I mixed up the Kings and Floyd.

You did tell me in TFK thread that they occasionally surpass Floyd, so I guess it's no surprised that it happened here.

Awesome top 10 though, all these bands your mentioning simply transcend music and become livable experiences for me.

I am a bit iffy on quite a bit of Floyd's pre-Meddle material.  I mean, I like a lot of it, but I love very little of it.  It is hard for them to stay top 3 when that big a chunk of their material doesn't fall under the "love" category, ya know?

I tried this... and it did nothing for me. I'll assume it's connected to the "Seinfeld is unfunny" trope in that it seems generic and stale, but that's because so many things have copied it when they were one of the first to do what they did. Whether or not that's true, I definitely respect them and their influence as a band, and I haven't given up on them yet; I've heard a few other songs (from Kid A in particular) that I've quite enjoyed. I guess OK Computer just isn't my thing.

Talk about a dream band.  Take the influences of Zappa, Floyd, Yes and Genesis, throw in some new songwriting twists, and modernize the sound, and The Flower Kings is what you end up with.  The single reason I checked out this band in the first place was after hearing Roine Stolt sing the "Disappointment struck him hard..." section in Transatlantic's "My New World."  His guitar playing sounded great, but it was his voice that really made me want to check out his main band.  To this day, Roine Stolt's voice is one of my favorite things about the band, along with his guitar playing, Tomas Bodin's fantastic and graceful keyboard playing, and, of course, the great songwriting.  Honestly, on sheer volume and greatness, they really are about even with my top two bands in that regard, but I simply don't listen to them quite as much as the top two.  TFK is very much of a spring and summer band for me (while the top two are bands I can listen to any time, anywhere), not to mention I probably have to be in the mood for some prog to really get into a long phase with them, if that makes sense.  When I first got into this band, the one moment I had when I really realized how special they could be was when I listened to "Business Vamp" from the "Garden of Dreams" suite.  The keyboard leads during the extended intro have a feel and vibe unlike any I have ever heard before.  It sounded so special, so different...those lines are very hypnotizing.  Finally, I love how their music manages to never sound excessive from a playing standpoint, even though they obviously have the chops to show off like crazy.  And unlike most modern prog bands, they have tremendous, natural-sounding vocal harmonies.

Favorite albums: Paradox Hotel, Flower Power, Stardust We Are, Space Revolver and Retropolis

Favorite songs: Coming soon to a forum near you.

2 and 1 are coming very soon, too (not that what two bands they are are in doubt at all :lol).

Village people and Kool & The Gang...

As for TFK, I've only listened to their last album. It definitely made me want to check out some more of their stuff, but there are still plenty of bands on my ''To listen'' list.  :)

2. Porcupine Tree

This might sound a bit corny, but when I first got into this band, I had a moment where I thought, "This is the band I have been waiting my whole life for."  There are so many different layers to this band, I wouldn't even know where to begin in describing them, but I have never hidden my love for this band over the years, so if you are familiar with my postings over the years, you know my feelings on this band.  One of my favorite musical experiences ever was the first time I listened to Stupid Dream.  I don't remember which song it was during, but the CD was playing on my home stereo, I was well into it (at least halfway through it), and I turned and said out loud to no one, "Holy shit, this is awesome."  And there was no turning back.  I had already started liking the band thanks to In Absentia and Signify, but that one single moment summed it all in a nutshell.  I still have plenty of moments where I listen to Porcupine Tree and think, "Holy shit, this is awesome."  Everything Steven Wilson does seemingly turns to gold, and Porcupine Tree is his most valuable possession, in a manner of speaking.  PT is currently as close as any band has been since 1992 to catching my number 1 band.  Not that close, mind you...just closer than any other band has gotten.

Favorite albums: Lightbulb Sun, Stupid Dream, Deadwing, In Absentia and The Incident

I thought about pulling a David Chase and just never putting number 1 and leaving it hanging, like Chase did with The Sopranos, but did not.  Just like we know Tony Soprano died, you all would have known Rush was number 1. :lol

Oh, and for a long-ass dissertation on Rush's unequivocal awesomeness, listen to their entire catalog from start to finish today and then report back.

I'm not surprised Iron Maiden's not on the list. I don't think Kev's a fan.
I thought Van Halen would've made the Top 30, and I was surprised about BOC. But that's a pretty diverse list, so nice job, Kev.
I probably couldn't name a single song by about a third of the bands listed.

Thank you Kev, it was a great reading. As summer approaches I´m in a phase of getting new music (although mainly from artists I already know) so your opinions are really helpful (apart from your love for PT, I listen to you anything music related ;D).

I think I´ll start getting Innuendo, Up!, Revolver, Promised Land  and Instant Delivery from the Flower Kings.
