Title: Post-Rock
Post by: TheVoxyn on April 09, 2010, 03:53:06 PM
I have been listening to a lot of post rock lately. Can anybody recommend some new bands for me?

Band I already listen to and can encourage anyone to check out:
Sigur Rós, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, God is An Astronaut, This Will Destroy You, A Silver mt. Zion, Kyte, Explosions in the Sky.

I have also listened to 65daysofstatic but didn't find that to be that interesting.

Ashes Against the Grain and The Mantle are 2 of the best albums ever made.

Post-Rock
Neo-Folk
Black Metal

Already have those 2 albums, haven't really listened to them yet. I'll be sure to do it sometime soon  :tup.

Just read some about it via google, sounds interesting. Putting it on my to-get list.

Then you're in it for a real treat, that i can tell you.
Personally, i don't think there's an album that has affected me as much as Ashes Against the Grain.
It's just THE best album ever, and no matter what band tries to top that, it will be impossible.
All of the songs are just 10/10, and together they form ~60 minutes of perfection. ;)
I can sound like a fanboy all day, but this is the truth!
Portrucci will back me up on it. :)

I can stand Black/Death metal vocals, but I have to say it's not really my favorite type of vocals to listen to. I'll be sure to listen through the albums though, this isn't the first time I have seen them been praised.

Mono and Tortoise are a different kind of post-rock IMO, they have a less polished sound than later bands IMO. You may want to check them out for something different.

For others who were as  ??? as I was upon entering this thread:

Quote
Post-rock is a musical genre characterized by the use of instruments commonly associated with rock music, but using rhythms, harmonies, melodies, timbres, and chord progressions not traditionally found in rock. Post-rock musicians typically produce instrumental music.

Although firmly rooted in the indie or underground scene of the 1980s and '90s, post-rock's style often bears little resemblance musically to that of indie rock.

Don Caballero and Tortoise were among the more prominent bands described as post-rock in the 1990s, but their styles are very different, despite being instrumental bands centered on guitars and drums. As such, the term has been the subject of backlash from listeners and artists alike.

Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-rock).

Having said that, I still have no idea what any of that means. Off to Grooveshark and YouTube for a bit...

yeah! That's the first time I've seen someone other than me mention Mono here.

Seriously Vox, You Are There is one of the best albums ever made, and is up there together with ( ) in my post rock segment.
After that album, get Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain, by Mono and Worlds End Girlfriend.

So it's rock music that.... experiments? How is it different from progressive rock then?

It is very often instrumental and isn't flashy at all. The instruments are one whole, you won't find guitar solos in post-rock.

Post-rock is pretty hit-or-miss for me.  I really dig Russian Circles and Mogwai, but Explosions in the Sky (except the first two songs on TEINACDP) and Gospeed don't do much for me.  Explosions just sounds too samey.  Sigur Ros is also amazing, but its difficult sometimes to be in the mood for it.  I also have some God Is An Astronaut and This Will Destroy You, though I haven't found time for TWDY yet.

EDIT: Almost forgot about Maudlin of the well...those guys are awesome too.

I'm a big post-rock fan. Here are my favorites:

Mogwai - Get the album Young Team, nothing but gems on this album
Do Make Say Think
From Monument To Masses - Check out the self titled debut album, also Schools Of Thought remix album is great and the Beyond God And Elvis EP is wonderful
God Is An Astronaut - Check out All Is Violent, All Is Bright and A Moment Of Stillness albums

I'm gonna say Godspeed is awesome, Silver Mt. Zion is pretty okay, and add Murder By Death (but only their first album is post-rock-y, "Like The Exorcist But More Breakdancing", my first post-rock album, I love ittttt (if you check it out check out the last 3 songs (excluding the hidden track)))

also, my new song (yes shameless self-plug) "Supernovae" i finished a few minutes ago is pretty decent post rock if I say so myself (although extremely close to Explosions In The Sky in style) (maybe even too close)  - Linky (https://austinbillings.tumblr.com/post/511674265/new-seventh-track-of-killing-lions-to-replace)

Also, I'm not exactly sure if It counts as post-rock but you guys might really like the band Fang Island, particularly the song "Daisy". Good stuff

55:12 by Gregor Samsa is the greatest post-rock album ever. Beyond that, my interest in post-rock has severely waned. Really the only bands I listen to from the genre nowadays are Gregor Samsa and Mogwai.

Yes! Yes, sorry I'm late!

AATG is probably the best metal album of the decade. And The Mantle is even better! Through I don't think it's too related to post-rock, but as an already big fan of post-rock when I listened to The Mantle I really loved the many minimalist and experimental parts.

I also have a straight post-rock band if anyone knows of them.
They are called Jakob and they are from New Zealand

I just really don't hear much similarity between the two bands. ASIWUFA is far closer to something like Russian Circles or hell even Cult of Luna or Isis than they are to Mastodon. It's like saying DT does proggy metal sections without growls so they're a substitute for Opeth.

this album singlehandedly renders Mastodon an obsolete band. It has all the brutal Mastodon sludgy ferocity, but with a touch of post rock beauty, and most importantly, no godawful lyrics and vocals.

This is probably the most WTF post I have ever read on this board.

This is probably one of the most true posts I have ever read on this board.

Set Guitars To Kill is INCREDIBLE so far.

Holy crap, everything I could've ever even thought of mentioning has already been mentioned at some point or another.  :c
That's awesome.

Bands that probably've been mentioned, but I can't remember:

The Evpatorial Report
Ambiente
The Burning Paris
Constants
iLiKETRAiNS
Jakob
July Skies
Pertegň
Jesu
Toboggan
Jääportit
Magyar Posse
Tomán
When Day Descends (whom also hold the title for longest track I own at 38:04)

The GY!BE gig in my home town got sold out before I could snatch a ticket...
Feel my pain.  :'(

On a related note, I've recently been getting into God Is An Astronaut, and these guys rule! Must get their new album now...

I do, I do feel your pain.  :(
('cept it'll be with Mogwai.)

and yay!  God is an Astronaut is one of my staple post-rock bands.

So I decided to step out of my musical boundary a tad today and picked one of these suggested bands at random, and looked up some of their stuff. I chose Destroyalldreamers, one of the bands Kari posted on page one. This is...different no doubt. But different enough to where it's interesting. Interesting enough to where I wish to further pursue a deeper look into this sub-genre. I'm currently listening to a song titled "Wish I Was All Flames" by Destroyalldreamers. It's very spacey, atmospheric but has a really cool and laid back vibe.

I am really enjoying this.

Crippled Black Phoenix - I, Vigilante [2010]

Has anyone heard this album? It's probably in my top 5 albums of 2010. Maybe even top two!  It's sort of post-rock but with vibes of Pink Floyd, ambient and indie.
Quote
Crippled Black Phoenix is a band from the United Kingdom, formed in 2004. The band has described their own songs as "end time ballads". And it constantly and legitimately refuses being tagged as "post-rock" or "indie-folk".

"Born from a blizzard of horned cats, Crippled Black Phoenix bring you a twisted cinematic experience, handcrafted by a mercenary crew of underground heavyweights, giving depth and gravity to regal songs about love, loss, tragedies and redemption."

So yesterday i decided that i should give Sigur Rós an honest try, last time i tried them (about 2 years ago) i didn't really listen to a lot of the music i do now, so i feel more open-minded about music in general now.
Anyway, listened to Takk maybe 4 or 5 times in 2 days, and i simply LOVE it.
I don't understand anything lyric-wise, but the result of feeling lost is pretty cool, and the music is great.
My big question is, which album to go to next?
If it would help, it's hard to pick any favorite songs, because i think Takk is brilliant the whole way through, but Glosoli is my favorite, i think. :P

Not as good as Takk? ( ) is the best thing thing they made. Last time I tried to compile at 'top 10 albums of all time' list, it was at #2.

This, although Kari's point of view has something good in it too.
What side of Takk did you like? Maybe you should get an album that focusses more on that point.

Title: Re: Post-Rock
Post by: Zantera on December 21, 2010, 02:48:41 AM
It's hard to say why i love Takk, i just think it has many great songs, and the songs i don't love yet, they still work very well to maintain a flow during the album, so i still find them to be very good.
I really love how unique the music is, post-rock isn't THAT fitting, i'd say it has chunks of ambient in it also. :)

Bump.

So, does anyone here listen to Cult of Luna?
Swedish band, that has been praised a lot by critics here, though I'm not sure how big they are outside of this tiny country. :P
The music is like a blend of Post-Metal, Sludge and Art-rock, overall I think the mix is interesting.
They have some long build-up songs which feels very Post-rockish, but then they get to sections where it gets really heavy, and the harsh vocals just adds another dimension to the music.
I really think a lot of you here would like them. :)
As a starting point, I think either Somewhere Along the Highway (my personal favorite atm.) or the newest - Eternal Kingdom would do it.

Haven't heard this band before even though this isn't their first, but I really think this album is really good.
Hard to compare it to another band within the genre, but I'm getting some Explosions in the Sky-vibes, good ones.
This isn't the long/build-up type of post-rock, it's more melodic and catchy.

I used to think that too, but after listening to () many more times, it proved to be the only perfect Sigur Ros album for me. Other albums have some tracks I consider fillers, while () is just so complete and perfect, and in fact it stands as one track by itself. I'll see about it being the best post-rock album until I've listened to other bands, but after watching the live video of Untitled #8 from Heima, this album became even harder to top.

And about that live version... it's just :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Talking about Post-Rock, I had a huge Post-Rock streak tonight, while gaming I listened to pretty much only this genre.
The albums I listened to:

This Will Destroy You - Tunnel Blanket
Maybeshewill - I Was Here For a Moment, Then I Was Gone
Sigur Rós - Aegis Byrjun
65daysofstatic - We Were Exploding Anyway
Russian Circles - Enter
Sigur Rós - Takk
And So I Watch You From Afar - Gangs
Codes in the Clouds - Paper Canyon
Codes in the Clouds - As the Spirit Wanes

Radular.  I was going through a Cough binge and for some reason it pointed me to Isis on youtube and I listened to Ghost Key.  That has to be one of my most favorite songs ever.  Just the flow and bursts of aggression really struck me as aweworthy.  Not to mention the rest of Wavering Radiant is nothing short of phenomenal.

Title: Re: Post-Rock
Post by: Zantera on October 26, 2011, 06:41:15 AM
I'm not quite sure which bands you have already tried, and which you liked, but here are some of my top picks, and a bit how they sound, seeing as post-rock is a fairly wide genre. :P
(Alphabetically):

65daysofstatic - Nice mix of Electronic-influences with the Post-Rock sound. Seeing as you like Maybeshewill, these guys aren't THAT different, they do have an Electronic-influence that Maybeshewill doesn't, but they're also fairly Math-Rock influenced as well.

Codes in the Clouds - These guys are fairly indie, haven't quite gotten big yet, but they have only released 2 ˝ albums, the ˝ is a remix-album. They're more towards the melodic and catchy-side of Post-Rock, I would say that they are bit like Explosions in the Sky, except not as "repetitive", to me at least.

God Is An Astronaut - A band with more variety then your average Post-Rock band. As for what makes their sound unique, I would probably say that they use keyboards more, or in a way that makes me think of them as a bit more keyboard-oriented at least. It's a nice feature to create soundscapes though, really digging it.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Highly regarded not only within the genre, but also on this forum. Very orchestral, long and epic songs, and I think that albums like "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas..." and "F♯ A♯ ∞" are classics that all Post-Rock fans should have checked out.

Mogwai - One of my favorites, and one of the bigger bands in the genre. In terms of variety, I don't think there are too many bands that can beat Mogwai, because they utilize pretty much all the instruments they use, in a good way.
Some songs are more piano/keyboard-driven, some are just heavy 'in-your-face' with powerful guitars, and some of them have cool epic soundscapes. In other words, I think most Post-Rock fans can find stuff by Mogwai that they will enjoy.  :tup

Mono - Recently discovered, but these guys are really good. Hard to put my finger on exactly what I like, but they are masters at build-up songs, and they can create atmosphere like very few others can.

Sigur Rós - A few would most likely argue about if Sigur Rós are actually "pure" post-rock or not, but I think that comes mostly from the fact that Sigur Rós has vocals, which isn't really that common within the scene.
There are other great bands within post-rock that has vocals, Gregor Samsa comes to mind, but as I said it's a bit unusual, but everything with Sigur Rós is fantastic really.
They sorta have a "down to earth"-feel, which is very clear if you watch their DVD, "Heima" where they are outside in the nature, playing some of their songs, just chilled back.
They also cover a lot of ground, and one of my favorite bands.

These are some of my top picks, I would take my time to describe more bands, but that would take some time.  :lol
Anyhow, I'll list a few more ones that I really like, and if they seem interesting, I can always try to describe them as well:

A Silver Mt. Zion
And So I Watch You From Afar
Ef
Explosions in the Sky
From Monument to Masses
Gregor Samsa
Her Name is Calla
If These Trees Could Talk
iLikeTrains
Jakob
Long Distance Calling
Maybeshewill
Red Sparowes
Russian Circles
The American Dollar
This Will Destroy You
Tortoise
Vessels

Should I get the new Explosions in the Sky album?

It's a decent album, but there are much better Post-Rock releases from 2011.
If you haven't checked these out, I would recommend the following before getting EiTs:

Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will
Maybeshewill - I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone
Vessels - Helioscope
This Will Destroy You - Tunnel Blanket
Codes In the Clouds - As the Spirit Wanes
And So I Watch You From Afar - Gangs

After some semi-failed tries in the past, I'm finally getting into GY!BE. Loving Slow Riot and Lift Your Skinny Fists, specially Moya which I think is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I'm thinking I should get BY!BE music in vinyl instead of CD, it sounds like it would be amazing in vinyl plus they aren't particularly expensive or hard to find.

I don't want to try the others yet because they were the ones that failed previously and because I want to soak these two in before moving on to other albums.

I still don't get the "post" part about post rock or any other "post" genre. Post, meaning "after", what makes the music "after" regular rock? Also, is all post-rock instrumental? If so, why not just call it instrumental rock?
Title: Re: Post-Rock
Post by: Sigz on February 25, 2012, 04:37:32 PM
Does it really matter? It's a genre with a pretty specific style, who cares what you call it?

And no it isn't, but either way stuff like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani would be called instrumental rock, which is nothing like post rock.

Most genre's have silly names.

Also, 'Atmospheric Rock' would be better than instrumental rock.  Not all Post Rock is instrumental.

Title: Re: Post-Rock
Post by: Sigz on February 25, 2012, 05:16:17 PM
You asked why it was called post rock, not what post rock is.

But anyways, it's heavily instrumental music characterized by standard rock instrumentation (drums, bass, guitar), sometimes supplemented by orchestral instruments or electronics. The song structure, rather than being the standard rock verse-chorus-bridge structure, is more focused on building timbre and texture over repeated musical motifs and extended song lengths. Vocals aren't common, and even in songs that have singing it is not the focus of the music, instead supplementing it.

Isn't that kinda subjective though? There's also the fact that many people connect an album with a certain time of their life, maybe the first time they heard it, or they went through a certain phase and the album meant a lot to them. As for Talk Talk I haven't really listened yet (though it's on my list), but if we take Sigur Rós for example, some people have Agaetis Byrjun as their favorite, some have ( ) and there are also people who prefer Takk. I think these are all amazing albums, and while ( ) is my personal favorite, I can definitely see why someone would prefer any of the other two. :P

Post by: Jirpo on May 26, 2012, 02:10:12 AM
Yeah, I imagine they would be in the minority there :lol It's funny when we talk about Sigur Ros, my friend who ranks Meo as #1 really doesn't like Von compared to the others and vice versa for the other friend who likes Von the most. They pretty much have the opposite rankings :p

We all really loved Valtari though, went out and bought it after uni yesterday and listened to it out the back in my garden, it was really great.

Also I hate people who claim Von is their favourite Sigur Rós album. It's not true and everyone knows it.

I don't really know about the phonetic similarity but on the front cover it looked more like an o to me so I just call it "meo" in real life. Also Von is my least favourite Sigur but its pretty close to meo. I rank them all very evenly. Von is very underrated, great album.

While I think Von is perhaps a bit more unpolished then the others (but understandable since it's a debut, and it's still great), I could understand someone having it as favorite if they have fond memories related to it. Maybe it was the first Sigur Rós album they heard, or some songs on it clicked during an emotional period of their time.

Von had some great moments but as an album I think it's terrible. Also I don't think anyone out of Iceland ever heard of Sigur Rós before their tour for agćtis byrjun in 2000 and I don't think that anyone's first contact with Sigur Rós in these times well be Von either.
Title: Re: Post-Rock
Post by: Zantera on May 26, 2012, 05:18:03 AM
Well, there's probably someone outside of Iceland that heard of Sigur Rós before Von. I know they got their break with Agaetis Byrjun, and that's when the buzz started to spread. As for people hearing Von first, I don't think many SR-fans would say "start with Von", but if we're talking hypothetically, there are people who like to start with the first album and work their way chronologically, and there are people who don't download music, and maybe they just happened to stumble across a copy of Von at the local recordstore, picking it up by chance.
I agree that someone holding Von as their favorite is rare, but apparently it happens, and they're not "wrong" since it's all opinions, if they like it more then they probably have their reasons. I rarely listen to it, but it is quite different from the other SR-albums I would say. A bit more dense, "unpolished", but it has "Hafssól" (which was really beautiful on Inni) and the title-track is quite great as well.
Title: Re: Post-Rock
Post by: kári on May 26, 2012, 05:26:02 AM
On the sigur rós message board there are quite a few people who stick around but hate sigur rós, except for Von (or so they claim). I'm sick of that attitude. OK surely such people exist but they are nowhere near as great in numbers as message boards and forums would say. It's just a way to be cool or something to day I like nothing but Von.. I don't know. Even Sigur Rós don't like the record.
Also neither hafssól nor von are anything like the "versions" they play today. In the case of hafssól they even changed the name of to hafsól because it is so different. Von has only one great song, syndir guds, and two good songs, hún jörd myrkur. The rest range from barely OK to crap.

Yeah well Von was the first Sigur my friend heard cause he listened to their discography in order. I'm not 100% sure if he actually ranks it #1, he sometimes just says it to annoy my other friend (as well as bagging med, even though he still loves it :p) but I'm dead sure he would rank it top 3 (above Takk and Med). I agree, I hate that kind of attitude of people trying to be 'elitist'. But I can assure you there are quite a few people that love Von on its own merits (including me). As Zantera said it's a different style and some people could prefer that style, or the darker atmosphere which is not really there on their later albums.

Also I think a band disliking their own work is not a great argument since there are plenty of examples I can think where I love those respective albums (Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd is a top 5 Floyd album for me!).
Title: Re: Post-Rock

Yeah. If you ask most artists and bands what they think about their first album, I don't think too many of them would say the best things.  :lol It's the first album and even though in some cases the debut gets praised, the further into the career the band or artist gets, they will keep evolving and there wont be much left from how the first one sounded.
As with Sigur Rós I think they really found their sound on Agaetis Byrjun. Von has bits and pieces of it, but like I said, a bit "unpolished", in some songs they might go a bit too ambient, in others not ambient enough perhaps, and I think that's noticeable on the album.
And yeah, the new versions of the Von-songs are quite different (and I'd say better), but I still enjoy the old ones.

Georg: Exactly. But for example I listened to ‘Von’ the other day, because it was being re-released on vinyl, and I just needed to do a test-drive, to check the sound quality, nothing else. And suddenly I started really enjoying the music. It occurred to me that this was a damn good record. Just, really good. Sounded better than I remembered.

I've got a Godspeed You! Black Emperor concert coming up in a few months, and I'm trying to become a little more familiar with their work. What do you guys think the best starting place would be for me? I've never seen post-rock in concert, and I'm looking forward to a very unique and exciting experience.

To be honest, I don't think there is one album which stands out as a starter album. Maybe the 'Moya' ep, two great songs to get into as opposed to one long album. Also Lift your skinny fists like Kari said. Such an amazing album.

A couple more amazing post rock albums you should definitely check out if you haven't yet, in rough order:
Leech - The Stolen View (not very well-known, but really great. A little repetative but still one of my favourite post rock albums)
Yndi Halda - Enjoy Eternal Bliss (just gorgeous)
Red Sparrowes - At the soundless dawn (featuring a member from Neurosis/Isis, really great stuff)
Mum - Finally We Are No One (very soothing electronicy stuff)

Well there's Amiina, the string quartet that tours with Sigur Rós. Quite minimalistic but I love it. Ólafur Arnalds is also great, more classical but it can lean to modern music from times, check out "...And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness". Pornopop are also good, but I only have "And The Slow Songs About The Dead ..." Check it out though. For a Minor Reflection are also a great post rock band, they opened for Sigur Rós on their 2008 tour. I only have their first album though.

On the more poppy side there's Sóley, she's lovely. Check out her recent 'We Sink'. Then there's Of Monsters And Men of which you might have heard... Their recent "My Head Is An Animal" is absolutely phenomenal. Also check out FM Belfast's "Don't Want To Sleep", also an amazing album.

So what do we all think of the new Mono record and the new Godspeed You Black Emperor one?

Personally I don't really like Mono's new album. I don't know what it is, the production quality is not great but not appalling, the songwriting isn't outstanding, I don't really like the lack of drums, but overall it could've been a good record. It just isn't clicking. Maybe it needs to sink in better.

But for the GYBE record, man that's great. I love the artwork and the fact that it's a normal LP and an EP for the shorter songs. And that you have to play it like side 1 of the LP -> side 1 of the EP -> LP side 2 -> EP side 2. I love those things. But apart from that the music's great too. The short pieces are really moody, and the long pieces are really drawn out like they should be. It's not as good as LYSFLATH (yet) but better than their other work, imo.
Title: Re: Post-Rock
Post by: Zantera on October 26, 2012, 04:49:32 AM
The new Mono was good, but I feel like it was also pretty boring. To me the album felt very much like the last couple of Explosions in the Sky-albums, trying to sound like previous albums without being that interesting.
A good album, but not an album I will listen to very often. 3 out of 5.

The new GYBE however really impressed me. I was afraid that it wouldn't live up to the earlier albums, but luckily it did. I really enjoy the "new" elements of Drone on it, makes it a bit different to previous albums.
Not a perfect album, but a very good one. 4.5 out of 5.

I've listened to Leech and it's a really nice album. I don't think it's better than the new GYBE, which I still think is the best Post-Rock album this year, but a very solid album still.

It's probably tied with the latest If These Trees Could Talk for the second spot, behind GYBE but above Sigur Rós.

I like it a lot more than ITTCT's new album actually, it's a solid album, but Leech's album is just absolutely beautiful in so many ways.

I'm gonna give Leech more spins, so it might grow more.

All in all I'm starting to feel a bit less interest in 100% instrumental Post-Rock. I mean it kinda depends on the artist, and album length, but Leech for example was around 70 mins if I'm not mistaken, and that is a long time.
With GYBE for example they hold my attention with various samples, and being masters of crafting long songs, but with many other bands I feel like I loose interest towards the end, if the album is really long.
Not because the music is bad, but it just kinda happens. :P

New Long Distance Calling album streaming here: https://www.progrockmag.com/news/stream-long-distance-calling-album-in-full/

They have a new vocalist for 3 of the 8 tracks as well as a couple of other guest vocalists (one of whom is Vincent Cavanagh of Anathema, looking forward to hear the track he's on!).

Only on the first track but it sounds pretty cool. Going to see them in Glasgow in a few weeks time, will be interested to see how the vocals work out live as well as on the album.

Anyone here heard of Moving Mountains? Their new album is coming out on September 10th and they're really awesome, one of my favorite bands right now. Check out their new stuff on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h76DjPUppbM&list=SPawMNLVMLgQXXVkx12J-U5A_eDFyrtmle

And their most recent album, Waves, released in 2011 is a lot heavier than the new stuff, and one of my favorites, although the new stuff has my ear right now.

2 new Mono albums are coming out at the end of next month  :D

Quote
The Last Dawn is the first of these two companion albums, and is the "lighter" of the two, thematically and melodically. It contains undoubtedly some of MONO's strongest songs ever, drawing on an array of influences from minimalist film score to vintage shoegaze. It is MONO at their absolute purest, executing an uncanny, unspoken dialogue with each other without the dozens of stringed instruments that have been so prominent throughout their catalog. The songs are also noticeably more efficient – there hasn't been a MONO full-length record to fit on a single slab of vinyl since 2003's One Step More And You Die – and the album benefits immeasurably from this streamlined approach. MONO have always been masters of telling compelling stories without words. But now they've proven they can do it without frills, too.
'Where We Begin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQPhwQK4H1U)' - First single

Quote
Rays of Darkness is the first MONO album in 15 years to feature no orchestral instruments whatsoever. That fact alone is remarkable given the band's reputation for sweeping, dramatic instrumentals that recall Oscar-worthy film scores. Instead, Rays of Darkness more closely resembles a jet engine taking off inside a small, crowded auditorium. It is MONO's blackest album ever, a collection of scorched riffs, doom rhythms, and an unexpected contribution from post-hardcore pioneer Tetsu Fukagawa of Envy. The album ends with the smoldering wreckage of distorted guitars and ominous drones playing out a eulogy to the days when MONO shot blinding rays of light through seemingly endless darkness.
Looking forward to Rays of Darkness most I think, I've been hoping they would return to writing some heavier songs for a while  :metal

Seriuosly, since the orchestral Mono era I always thought that making a double album featuring both sides of the band would be a fantastic idea. Never imagine that could actually happen.

If you're looking at Mono, I'd say Hymn to the Immortal Wind is a pretty safe bet. A fantastic, emotional, beautiful album all the way through.

The thing about post-rock is that bands won't always sound similar at all, though they'll still be labeled as "post-rock". For example, Talk Talk's Laughing Stock and Slint's Spiderland sound virtually nothing like each other, yet they're both credited as pioneering the genre. It really all depends on what you're looking for, but for starters, I'd recommend:

Slint - Spiderland
Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F♯ A♯ ∞ and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Sigur Rós - Ágćtis byrjun (since you mentioned ( ) )
Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die

With all that said, I don't consider myself a guru in post-rock by any means. Someone like Zantera is probably better suited to answer your question, but there ya go. :lol

The top3 kings of Post-Metal to me are:

Neurosis - Isis - Cult of Luna

Neurosis is my favorite out of the three, and I would also say the most versatile. They have blended various influences on their albums, so you get everything from Pink Floyd on Metal to pure light Post-Rock, and Folk-Rock inspired metal. They're amazing, and have one of the best album runs out of any bands I know.

You already mentioned Isis so I take it you are familiar with their albums. Personally I think Panopticon and Oceanic are just masterpieces, even if the other three aren't on the same level, they're still dope.

Cult of Luna is the hidden gem of the three. Best metal band from Sweden IMO, they also have some really amazing albums. Salvation being my favorite, Somewhere Along the Highway being on the same level. Add other amazing albums like The Beyond, Eternal Kingdom and the most recent Vertikal, and you got a strong discography.

As someone said before, Hymn to the inmortal wind is a safe bet, specially if you like sigur ros, because the emotions and also they do the orchestral thingy with their music, too.
But if you like the more raw saund you can also try "You are There".

Seconded  :tup

Long Distance Calling are great too - lots of great riffage, but a lot of nice atmosphere to their songs - especially on the first 3 albums. Their latest album was a little different, since about half the songs have vocals (as opposed to their previous albums which had 1 song per album with a guest vocalist), but I really liked it. They were great live too.

I've listened to three Neurosis albums; Enemy Of The Sun, Through Silver In Blood and A Sun That Never Sets. Loved all of them, but definitely want to listen to more of their albums. Thinking of giving Given To The Rising a spin next.

I've heard almost every studio Isis release (Celestial-Wavering Radiant and also Mosquito Control, The Red Sea, Sawblade, SGNL>05 and their split EP with the Melvins). I agree with Oceanic and Panopticon being two of their masterpieces (Panopticon being my all time favorite) but I'd also throw Wavering Radiant in my top three Isis albums. I thought Celestial and In The Absence Of Truth were amazing even if they weren't on the same level. Garden Of Light is possibly my favorite Isis song outside of the songs on Oceanic, Panopticon and Wavering Radiant. Out of the three band on your Big 3 of Post-Metal, Isis is currently my favorite.

Cult Of Luna's a tricky one. I saw them when they co-headlined with Katatonia during their last US Tour and they came on right after Intronaut and TesseracT who were more energetic sounding. I never listened to them prior seeing them, and while I dug the vibe and mood COL set, coming from an act like TesseracT who the crowd absolutely loved, the crowd reception to them was unanimously indifferent/negative and half the crowd left during their set and maybe I didn't quite "get" the band at the time (this was before I began listening to the bulk of the post-metal bands I know of). Also, the venue didn't have the best sound so I couldn't tell when one of their songs were ending and a new one was beginning. Since then, I listened to Vertikal and Salvation and I really liked both, particularly Salvation. I dunno, maybe I need to give Cult Of Luna more listens.

Isis were so awesome, such a shame they split up. In the Absence of Truth has always been my favourite of theirs though, I absolutely love that album - brilliant right the way through, but Wrists of Kings, Dulcinea, Holy Tears and Garden of Light are incredible :coolio

I just listened to that band 'Toria' that Soundscape posted a link to a few months ago in this thread and it was cool, really good fun  :D :metal
Title: Re: Post-Rock

I think Isis came close to having a perfect discography. Not a single weak studio effort. I know that the band have since been openly critical of In The Absence Of Truth (and to some extent Aaron Turner has been critical of post-Panopticon Isis) but I think that the band ended at the right time of their careers if that even makes sense. It's disheartening to know that I'll never see them live (wouldn't matter anyway since I only discovered them this year) but for who have, it must've been a once in a lifetime experience.

The last half of Garden Of Light is possibly one of the most climatic moments in the band's history. I could play that part over again in a loop and not get tired of it.  :metal

I would say you should try with "Hymn to the Inmortal Wind" for a bright but melancholic album or "You are there" for a more dark sounding mono.

I just listened to The Last Dawn and I love it. It is the same, classic Mono, but I can hear lots of new things and they took some risks. The single "where we begin" might be the weakest song in the album imo, so that's a good sign.

Well Mono's 'Rays of Darkness' is extremely disappointing :( Not what I expected at all. Recoil, Ignite is awesome, but the rest not so much. Second track isn't dark or heavy at all to me and the final song is just drone/feedback stuff  :'(
Agreed. It's easily the worst thing they've put out. And The Last Dawn isn't that impressive either.

Oh damn Hammock's Departure Songs is damn beautiful. Not like typical post rock with lots of crescendos - just calm, gorgeous music.

Dude, totally, I only recently stumbled upon this via YouTube suggested vids.  So freaking good!!!!

I just listened to The Last Dawn and I love it. It is the same, classic Mono, but I can hear lots of new things and they took some risks. The single "where we begin" might be the weakest song in the album imo, so that's a good sign.
The opener it's amazing.

I bought The Last Of Dawn today at my local record store as they didn't have any of their other albums besides that and Rays of Darkness. How does it compare to their "best" album?

I don't think the new Mono albums are getting enough love, they are really great. If they had been released separately I might have liked them less, but as a combo they really balance each other out. I might prefer Rays of Darkness slightly, but The Last Dawn is really great as well. This is much better than the last album, which felt like a band going on autopilot. This feels like a band trying new things.  :heart

Maybe it's because this was the first time I've listened to Mono, but I really liked The Last Dawn. I thought it was quite beautiful and lush sounding if not a tad mellow than what I was expecting. I'll probably get Rays of Darkness next, but it left a good impression on me.  :tup

So I bought Mono's Rays of Darkness the other day and had time to listen to it. Great album IMO, even though it felt a bit shorter than what I expected. I listened to both TLD and RoD one after the other just now, and out of the two I enjoyed The Last Dawn a tad more.

I just listened to that band 'Toria' that Soundscape posted a link to a few months ago in this thread and it was cool, really good fun  :D :metal

thanks for mentioning it. Toria are pretty sweet, although I'll admit, I think their EPs I got more into, probably because of the way they used samples.

I actually just discovered per the KScope podcast, another band, from the UK, a little like them, but also like a few others, namely *Shels and Forest Park and God is an Astronaut.

Nordic Giants

https://nordicgiants.bandcamp.com/

I got so into them so quickly, I purchased the colored Vinyl pressing of their 2 most recent EPs "Build Seas / Dismantle Suns"

some incredibly atmospheric music with this group. Using piano, samples, trumpet, female vocals and a lot of other things (strings). They I guess are working on their 1st full-length record or are done with it and it'll likely come out in 2015. I can't wait to hear it now.

I'm actually way more excited for the Nordic Giants debut record "A Séance of Dark Delusions" which comes out the week after, than the new Godspeed.

But  beyond all the exaggerated hype for a new Godspeed record, it'll still be good to hear something new from them. I just wonder after their last record was so uneven, with the filler (the droney pieces) sticking out a bit too much to demand repeated play, I can't help but just expect to only get into a percentage of it.

Wow, it's amazing what could happen when something doesn't click with you right away and then you come back for awhile and suddenly things click immediately on the next listen. I really appreciate and adore their music much nore now. Thanks for the advice. I took your word and started with the first album. Very solid record. :tup I know on their Wiki page it cites their guitarist as doing vocals as well, but the first album seems like it's purely instrumental. I know it's too early to judge based on one album, but later in their career do they have songs where there's actual lyrics being sung?
Title: Re: Post-Rock
Post by: goo-goo on July 26, 2015, 09:35:48 PM
Origins has some vocals with robotic effects (a few songs), and probably that's the turn off on that album...That's about it. Other than that, everything else is instrumental. I think their latest one has one song with vocals (with effects if IIRC) but not as bad as Origins.

15th April - London

I'll be going to the Glasgow show, hopefully it's a memorable final tour!

Okay, don't see a thread for God Is An Astronaut, so I guess it'll go here:

Quote
God Is An Astronaut Unveil First & Exciting Album News! "Epitaph" To Be Released On April 27th!
Pre-order your copy here: https://smarturl.it/Epitaph-NPR

Ever since forming 16 years ago, Irish trio God Is An Astronaut has reigned as one of the premier instrumental groups. With their fusion of intense rock instrumentation, ethereal and emotional soundscapes, awe-inspiring dynamics and transfixing melodies, each of the band's prior releases has offered a breath taking sonic journey. Now God Is An Astronaut are finally back with their ninth emotive opus titled 'Epitaph' , set to be released on April 27th 2018 with NapalmRecords! God Is An Astronaut's hotly anticpated album - covered in pain, sadness and melancholic beauty - both sees a progression in their sound while still remaining true to their ethos that helped define the band.

The cover artwork was painted by French artist Fursy and fits the melancholic mood beautifully.

The track list of 'Epitaph' will read as follows:
1. Epitaph
2. Mortal Coil
3. Winter Dusk/Awakening
4. Seance Room
5. Komorebi
6. Medea
7. Oisín

Fans may expect a continuation of 2015's 'Helios | Erebus' but a change in direction was unavoidable when real-life tragedies occurred involving people close to the band. Niels and Torsten Kinsella, twin brothers and co-founders of God Is An Astronaut, are joined again here by long-time drummer Lloyd Hanney. Amongst others, contributions also come from Jamie Dean on keys, Xenon Field on sound design, Jimmy Scanlon once again lends his talents on guitar and Brian Harris performs slide guitar on the song 'Mortal Coil'.
This album, with its stylish and rich musical textures has in its building blocks references to the past, as with a lot of the band’s work. When present experiences are pulled in to the mix you get something that will last well into the future, armed with music like this you are strengthened for that journey. 'Epitaph' is an album that will move you deeply and call out to you to be revisited many times!

New album drops 27th of April, out of nowhere! :metal :metal Continuation of Helios sounds good, as that's one of my favourite albums by them.

Title: Re: Post-Rock
Post by: romdrums on January 29, 2018, 12:15:52 PM
Since discovering the sleepmakeswaves record last year I've been on a huge post-rock kick. Outside of Long Distance Calling's Avoid the Light, which I really dug, I've tried to get into bands like Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky in the past, but nothing ever really grabbed me until I heard Made of Breath Only.  That record totally opened the floodgates for me, and I've since gone on to get almost all of their back catalog, plus getting into bands like pg. lost, Mogwai, maybeshewill, God is An Astronaut, Caspian, And So I Watch You From Afar, Russian Circles, Audrey Fall, Collaspe Under the Empire, If These Trees Could Talk, Soup, and We Lost the Sea.  I'm digging this stuff a lot, but one of the things I find interesting about post-rock is that there seems to be some elitism and backlash amongst the fans of this genre.  There seems to be a rather vocal segment of post-rock fans that call a lot of new stuff incredibly derivative and worthless.  Maybe it's because I haven't really listened to Godspeed and Tortoise yet, but I find it interesting, and it has kind of put me off on checking out Godspeed, Silver Mt. Zion, and some other bands.  This thread is the opposite of that, which is cool, but has anyone else heard these criticisms, or should I just take rym reviews with a few heaping grains of salt?
Title: Re: Post-Rock
Post by: Sacul on January 29, 2018, 01:23:57 PM
It's mostly due to a lot of modern post-rock bands following on what Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky did and adding little to the mix, while what's known as the first and second "wave" acts of the genre like Tortoise, Godspeed, Bark Psychosis, even Swans and others, came from very varied backgrounds and were hesitant to be labeled as "post-rock", since their music was just very experimental and barely had similarities with each other. Doesn't mean the new stuff is bad at all (I personally don't like it much), it's just different in many ways so I understand both sides.

I'd say you should take your time with some of the older stuff anyways, it's a bit different but very rewarding imo. Try Sigur Rňs (go with ()) and Godspeed (Lift your Skinny Fists...) as they're pretty accessible. Bark Psychosis (Hex) and Talk Talk (Spirit of Eden) are great for getting into more ambient and challenging stuff while still being approachable. Modern Swans (The Seer and To Be Kind) too if you prefer the more aggressive side of your post-rock. Then delve into Slint (Spiderland), Disco Inferno (D. I. Go Pop), Tortoise (Millions Now Living Will Never Die), older Swans (Soundtracks for the Blind), and more.

The new God is an Astronaut track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm5gNUYFPs8) just got released. Very dark stuff, can't really pinpoint one of their albums that this sounds very similar to, seems like it is going into a darker direction than ever before and I dig it. Given the description on the FB post I quoted above, I guess it makes sense.

HYPE

P.S. Just found out the youtube version cuts out part of one of the quieter sections in the middle, so for the full version go to Spotify if you can

The first and second wave of Post-Rock tend to be the most praised because back then the bands really broke new ground. Bands like GY!BE, Sigur Rós, Mogwai (even earlier bands like Slint) really did something unique and fresh and also put out stellar albums. More modern Post-Rock isn't necessarily bad, to me it's just very "safe" a lot of the time. Mogwai is a good example because even though their last few albums most of em have some great songs, the majority is just "decent background music".

There's still a lot of good post-rock, but few albums that grab me the way classic Godspeed or Sigur Rós does for example.

Post-rock fans:

Deep Elm Records (https://deepelmdigital.com/) is having a big sale of their releases through Bandcamp. Deep Elm includes Lights & Motion which is an OUTSTANDING post-rock, anthemic, atmospheric type music. Check them out.

This seemed like the best thread to post this in.

I saw an ad for a new Sigur Rós album so I'm just checking it out, and looking over at allmusic.com to see if they have released anything in the past five years.

They've released quite a few albums, but Allmusic doesn't even bother rating them anymore? Has their popularity declined so dramatically?

The last 'real' Sigur Rós album was in 2013 and the band feels kinda dead at this point considering there's only 2 (?) members left. Like the new release is an orchestral thing they did in 2002 and before that I know they put out some ambient thing but it's been a long time since a 'proper' album release.

Decided to dive into Mono over the last few days. Not even entirely sure where that came from.

I do know actually, I relistened to Hymn to the Immortal Wind, which led me to spinning their live album Holy Ground (feat. The Wordless Music Orchestra). I'm a sucker for orchestral accompaniment to my music, so this was right up my alley. This has prompted a play through of their discography  :metal

As far as instrumental post-rock goes, this is perfect for my tastes. I'd checked out the odd album, and a few songs previously but gonna try to play through all their albums over the next few days.

One final thing, one of their band profile pics, from Last.fm, is one of the most badass band pictures I've ever seen!!

Stumbled upon the debut album by a french band called 'BRUIT <' and it pretty much skyrocketed to my AOTY so far.

Absolutely wonderful post-rock album and one of the stronger post-rock albums I can remember hearing in quite some time. I really liked the new GYBE but this one is even better IMO.

My only disappointment is it's not even available on vinyl yet but I'm sure that will come (their EP before this album was released on vinyl, and I wanna check out that EP too)

Colour me intrigued. I'll check it out for sure.

I need to pick this album up.  Checked it out on bandcamp to see what it was all about, and I was really impressed.  Need to listen on a good set of speakers, I think.

New Sigur Rós album, “Átta”, comes out tomorrow. First album in 10 years. Should make for a nice chaser for the latest King Gizzard album.

Listening now and it certainly is a palate cleanser after PetroDragonic. I’ve started trying to do yoga in the mornings (if I have the damned time) and this is a perfect album to accompany such activities.

Being that this thread is 13 years old now how did the post-rock bands age for you? Personally I'm still a fan of the genre but a lot of bands I initially fell in love with like God Is An Astronaut didn't age that well. It's a mix of the songwriting and the sound design that seems very outdated.

GY!BE and Sigur Rós are still among my all time favorites bands period. GYBE would be in my top5, Sigur Rós probably in my top15-20 or so. Still enjoy Mogwai a fair bit, they are lower down but I still check out new albums and I enjoy their stuff quite a lot. You also have some legacy bands like Slint or Talk Talk that I hold very close to my heart, but because you only got a few albums from those and they haven't been active in decades, it's not as high up on the list.

But even as a huge fan of the band I must say that a lot of it just passes through one ear and out the other. There's a lot of bands I remember being quite hyped about a decade ago that I don't really re-visit these days.

bump.

Mogwai documentary was at SXSW. Hopefully it'll show up on the streaming services or maybe in some theaters.

I'd say most stuff has aged for me pretty well. Mogwai are a band that had the opposite impact for me - I never really cared that much for them back in the day (thought they were just kind of basic), but I saw them live a couple of years ago and they blew me away.

It's a style that I've generally found sounds much more interesting on paper than in execution.  There are various groups/albums/songs I like, but I really have to be in the mood to explore it, as there is a lot of dull meandering for my tastes on many albums.
