Title: DT one-off club shows in June/July
Post by: STEVETHEATER on April 08, 2010, 03:58:50 PM
Just got this from MP.com  :omg:

Dream Theater will be doing a few select headlining shows on some of the days off throughout the Iron Maiden tour.

Please note these will not be traditional DT shows in terms of production...as it is in the midst of the Maiden tour, we are not carrying our usual lighting and video show...so instead these will be small intimate club shows...just like the good(?) 'ol days!

So come sweat it out with us.....

June 21, Roseland Theater, Portland, OR (Opening Act TBA)  - On sale 4/23/10

July 2, Newport Music Hall, Columbus, OH - On sale 4/24/10
Special Guests: BEATALLICA

July 10, Palladium, Worcester, MA - On sale 4/16/10
Special Guests: CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED
(featuring Richard Christy and Ripper Owens)

How so?  You mean before this announcement was made, there were zero DT shows scheduled in your town, and now after the announcement, there are now similarly...zero shows scheduled?  Yeah, sounds like a huge net loss for you.  :justjen

Damn, Portland, OR is a managable couple hours' drive away, but I'd have to leave work early. So tempted.... curious what a ticket would cost since Maiden/DT ate up my concert budget for this year. Damn, that concert is the next day. That could be a back-to-back overload of music awesomeness.

Do you think they will play any sort of special setlists considering its a different type of show?

An entire album?
Mostly older stuff?

Even with the clout DT carries, I think the fact that they are a supporting act for Maiden means Maiden's management worked out the tour schedule with their promoters.  So even though DT is doing some one-off headlining dates on days off, their schedule is going to necessarily be dictated by the Maiden tour.  I just don't think it's realistic to expect that they would have traveled far from any place they were already going to be.  I'm not trying to bust your chops over it, but I'm just saying that bands don't normally do that, so it isn't really something that should be expected of DT.

I liked the idea of a smaller, most personal venue, but I also like the idea of not having to fight for (or pay high price) for a few seats

I don't.  For one thing, there's nothing wrong, in and of itself with playing clubs.  Lots of big name bands do.  Second, this is doen as a special treat for the fans in a few select cities, which is completely different than booking an entire club tour.  Lots of bands than can sell out bigger venues do occasional intimate "fan appreciation"-type shows as a way to connect with fans on a different level.

Nice!!! Hoping for a NY, NJ, or PA show here!! Opening act, Ideosphere? lol
Contractually, we are not able to play headlining dates in close proximity to the Maiden/DT shows....

BTW, that is not Maiden being difficult...it's actually standard industry touring protocol...it was the same when Zappa or Opeth did one-offs from Progressive Nation....

hmmm I wonder what constitutes 'close proximity'. They're not really playing a show in LA on the Maiden tour, maybe they'll do another club show there *pleaseohpleaseohplease*

This.  For example, U2 routinely sells out stadiums all over the world, but they played a couple of club dates not too long ago.

Hopefully, they will stretch themselves a little as far as the setlist on the club shows.

Exactly.

Another good example - 3 years ago Paul McCartney played a show at the Highline Ballroom in NYC, which has a capacity of 700.

I will probably end up doing the reverse of this :) Just need to get out of work early on Monday as well as Tuesday. No way could I make it down to PDX in time otherwise.

Have you ever been to that venue in PDX? If so, how is it? I looked online at some of the acts they have booked there coming up and the prices seemed pretty reasonable, yes?

All the shows I've seen there in the past have been $20-$30. And I'll probably end up taking the day after the Maiden show off. I work a very early morning shift so by the time I got back to Portland it would be time to go to work and I wouldn't have the energy for it. :lol

According to the internet, the Worcester venue holds about 2,000 people, so I'd imagine tix will be obtainable if you try for them within a relatively short period after they go on sale... but they probably will go pretty quickly.

Does anybody that is familiar with Newport Music Hall (Columbus) happen to know what the "bigger" bands charge (on average) for tickets?

I'm hearing 35 (plus fees)... Does that sound about right?

UPDATE!
July 2, Newport Music Hall, Columbus, OH - On sale 4/24/10
Special Guests: BEATALLICA
That sounds like a cool opening band;
Quote
Beatallica is a mash-up band that plays music made from combinations of songs of The Beatles and Metallica. A Beatallica song is typically a blend of a Beatles song and a Metallica song with a related title (e.g. "The Thing That Should Not Let It Be", combining The Beatles' "Let It Be" and Metallica's "The Thing That Should Not Be" or "And Justice for All My Loving" combining Metallica's "And Justice for All" and the Beatles' "All My Loving"), though sometimes just a Beatles song will be used as a basis with modified lyrics. The lyrics slip back and forth between the two songs—occasionally neither in lieu of original lyrics comically referencing Metallica, heavy metal music or the heavy metal community—while the scansion and melody are usually Beatles-based, the music is played metal style with some Metallica riffs and solos thrown in. Consistent quirks made in the lyrics also criticize glam metal much in the fashion that thrash metal fans would do, as well as many references to blood.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatallica

Sounds like a kind of band Mike would like to hear as well, combining two of his favourite bands.

Also, these mini shows. Will DT play their regular music, or are they like acoustic and covers?

I highly doubt DT would do an acoustic set at the palladium. Most shows there are metal oriented... I'm expecting a similar set to the IM shows.... maybe 12 step suite in its entirety.

Mini? For comparison, the DT setlist at one of the Yes concerts

1.  About to Crash
2.  Learning to Live
3.  Trial of Tears
4.  Machine Messiah (Yes cover)
5.  Stream of Consciousness
6.  The Spirit Carries On
7.  Solitary Shell
8.  About to Crash (reprise)
9.  Losing Time/Grand Finale

And the one-off show at the Palladium during the Yes tour:
1.  Metropolis Pt. 1
2.  This Dying Soul
3.  Peruvian Skies
4.  War Inside My Head
5.  The Test That Stumped Them All
6.  A Fortune in Lies
7.  Endless Sacrifice
8.  improv jam
9.  Through My Words
10.  Fatal Tragedy
11.  Pull Me Under (warped version)
12.  Stream of Consciousness
13.  The Spirit Carries On
14.  Solitary Shell
15.  About to Crash (reprise)
16.  Losing Time/Grand Finale
---encore---
17.  In the Name of God

Songs in bold are obviously songs that were played at both concerts.

But every other gig is available to buy through ticketmaster on their website, so I would assume it will be the same for DT

Evoking a classic 70's feel, their songs herald a return to a time when music was at its most colorful and influential. With tasteful guitar parts, crunching Hammond organ and rich vocals, the band follows a path previously tread by rock pioneers such as Kansas, Yes, Genesis and Deep Purple.

I’m listening at work I’m not giving it a 100% honest listen, but it sounds pretty good. Well constructed and produced, at least. Not too heavy (as noted above, more of a 70s keyboard-driven prog vibe). Nothing I’m going to run about and buy, but curious how they will perform live. Should be a decent opener.

Is anyone else here going to this show other than you and me? And have you ever been to this venue? Looks like you can buy tickets from their website (or an affiliate they use – not ticketmaster).

Seeing that these shows are in small clubs, do you think that they will play more lighter songs, like Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, Octavarium, Innoncence Faded, Learning to Live, etc. ?

Or they will stick with the songs they play on the IM tour, with obviously more heavier stuff ?

But do you think we can expect a setlist like with songs we've had on the PN09 tour and the shows in South America, or will it be a totally different setlist with a totally new setlist ?

I see a chance for them to play The Best Of Times.

I grabbed these as a precaution, so in the event that I end up on Ripper's guest list, I shall put my two tix up for grabs here first (I'll only ask for 95 for the pair, as that's what I payed with the processing fees and such).

GA is the only way concerts should be. I remember coming to the US, going to my first DT concert, thinking "wow, this stinks. I'm hundreds of feet away from the stage, with shitloads of empty seat everywhere, wedged with my legs in front of that stupid seat."

I'd go to the Columbus show, but it has to be on the Friday of the busiest week of the year at my job  :(
