Just got into these guys recently. They're really good. Neon Bible is my favorite album, not sure what my favorite song is, but its definitely between "Black Mirror," "Rebellion(Lies)," and "My Body is a Cage."
Any other fans here?
-
I dig em a lot. Wake Up is probably my favorite, the live version with David Bowie is awesome.
-
I also prefer Neon Bible, but both are damn fine.
I wish these guys were more active. Need more albums and tours from them.
-
Now this is a thread I dig! :D
I've been into this band for, oh, about two years or so now, I think. I went nuts over them when I first discovered them, and still listen to them quite a bit. I prefer Funeral over Neon Bible, as the former is consistently great, while the latter has a few throwaway songs, but both are very worthy. "Intervention" and "Rebellion (Lies)" are definitely my two favorite songs of theirs. :)
-
I listened to Neon Bible again earlier today and didn't really hear any of those "throwaway" tracks. Maybe, MAYBE Antichrist Television Blues, but everything else is great.
-
I am not overly fond of either "My Body is a Cage" or "Neon Bible." Neither are bad, but I don't go out of my way to listen to either. I do, however, almost always skip "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations," which I think is not good at all.

:omg:
I can understand "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations" though. It took a bit for that to grow on me.
-
I think the thing is, my favorite Arcade Fire songs are all so awesome, that they dominate my time when I listen to them, so the lesser ones, most of which are good, go by the wayside most of the time. Except for BW/BV, I like every song on both studio albums.
-
I prefer funeral, although both are very good albums. They're headlining a major festival in the UK this year so its posssible theyre going to get a whole lot bigger when their 3rd album comes out this year.
-
Funeral. I rarely listen to these guys, but they are truly awesome.
-
Just found out that these guys have a new album coming out this August. wOOt! :tup :tup
And two songs from it are now out there - "The Suburb" and "Month of May" - both of which can be heard at out favorite online site where you can watch all kinds of videos. :)
-
New album is out tomorrow (in uk). I've only heard the suburbs, which is a pretty good single, plus the album's been getting great reviews. Think these guys are going to get alot bigger pretty soon :tup
-
I have already acquired the album, and it's top class. Better than Neon Bible for sure, probably doesn't quite reach the heights of Funeral, but then again, not many albums do.
Beware though, it's most certainly a grower.
-
I saw them live a few weeks ago and was instantly hooked.
Really amazing.
I prefer funeral though.
-
Well funeral was one of the top albums of the decade for me, so thats not so much of a problem. Promising if it's better than Neon Bible though.
-
I've been meaning to check these guys out for a while now.
-
Sprawl II is godly.
-
Sprawl II is godly.
-
I acquired the new album yesterday. Only listened though once, but nothing really grabbed me. Will be listening to more in the next week.
-
Really looking forward to hearing this. Will be buying it when it comes out on Tuesday. :coolio
-
Listening again. I really like it, which is weird considering I didn't hear anything really special last time. Still not hearing a really magical track yet (except maybe for Sprawl II), but I think its better than Funeral.
-
After one listen, sounds pretty tasty. With so many songs, it will take some time to sort through them to figure out the best ones, but as a whole, I liked it quite a bit. :)
The booklet it came in sucks ass, though. Gah, why can't all bands just go back to jewel cases. :censored
-
These guys are on the top of my list of artists to explore alongside Ryan Adams, No-Man, Frank Sinatra, Simon & Garfunkel and U2.
-
I hate those stupid booklets.
Still need to listen a few times, but I am liking it so far.
-

Got into Ryan Adams recently, pretty good actually..
Listened to the album a couple of times, hard to judge yet but seems pretty good. For me the title track and sprawl II stick out at the moment but i'm sure that'll change soon.

-
Wow, amazing.
Just so you all know, they're broadcasting tonight's show online: https://www.arcadefire.net/news/live-webcast-from-new-york-city/
-
nice set
-
that is a KILLER set list. I have some friends who are going to see them in Atlanta. I'm more jealous that I thought I'd be.
-
https://www.youtube.com/arcadefirevevo
Starts in about 25 minutes. :coolio
-
I had no idea Arcade Fire was popular enough to play MSG. Very cool.
-
I just listened to that setlist as an iTunes playlist... :hefdaddy Not too big on "Rococo" though.
Watching the live stream now :tup
EDIT: "I know there's always that person in front of you who's like 'please don't dance, I'm trying to watch a show.' Just say 'Hey, nice to meet you, and I respect your opinion, but I'm trying to be at a fucking rock show.'"
*breaks into Neighborhood #3*
:lol
-
I am watching this with a big grin on my face. This band is awesome. :)
-
"This is live as shit!"
-
SCURVYYYYYYYYY
-
That webcast last night was great, despite some technical glitches with the buffering and the volume at times. I can't wait to see this band live, hopefully sooner rather than later. :)
Also, the new album sounds better and better with every listen. "Half Light II" is an absolute monster, and "Sprawl II" is one of those songs that you just smile during because of how awesome it is. :coolio
-
"Sprawl II" is one of those songs that you just smile during because of how awesome it is. :coolio
It's the greatest 80s song of at least the last 20 years.

Haha, you gotta love the "Safety Dance" vibe of the keys and drums. :tup :tup
-
Sprawl II might become my favorite AF song. Right now its between that, No Cars Go, Keep the Car Running, My Body is a Cage, Rebellion, and Power Out.
-
I remember seeing them live front row at a festival. I wasn't there for them though, Tool were coming up next. I was bored out of my mind, thought the band were a bunch of lunatics. Whatever, my music taste has changed a lot since then (didn't know about Sigur Ros and all that stuff), so maybe it's time for another shot. I really like 'Keep the car running' though.
-
Every time you close your eyes...
LIES! LIES!
Words really cannot say how awesome I think "Rebellion (Lies)" is.
Good choices there, sky, although I would toss out "My Body Is a Cage" and throw in "Intervention." If I to spitball a top 5 from the first two records (new one is still too new for me to fairly judge the songs), it would be:
1. "Rebellion (Lies)"
2. "Intervention"
3. "Power Out"
4. "Crown of Love"
5. "No Cars Go"
-
top 5? in no partic order
Neighbourhood I
Rebellion (lies)
No cars go
In the backseat
The suburbs/Sprawl II (too early to really tell)
-
This band definitely seems to be getting a lot of hype lately. I listened to some samples on amazon, but didn't hear anything that really reached out to me.

I have no doubt that "Sprawl II" will be a favorite of mine as far as this is concerned, but I still need to give it time to make sure.
It seems like most of the fan base genuflects at the feet of "Tunnels," which is a great song, but I just don't rate it quite as high as many others seem to.

Personally, 30-second samples never help me at all. My suggestion would be to go to youtube and listen to the studio versions of "Intervention," "Rebellion (Lies)" and "Keep the Car Running." If none of those songs do anything for you, then this band probably isn't for you. Full-length songs will give you a better taste test than samples will. :)
-
Add "Wake Up" to that list. If there's one Arcade Fire song you've heard, its probably that one.
-
Add "Wake Up" to that list. If there's one Arcade Fire song you've heard, its probably that one.
True. I don't think it is one of their absolute best songs, but, yeah, it is easily their most recognizable song. I'm sure most people know the big chanting harmonies, even if they don't know the name of the song or the band it's by.
-
The flow of this new record is absolutely perfect. There are a few songs that, on their own, really wouldn't stand out at all, but in the context of the album, really add to the flow and makes the overall album that much better. I honestly cannot remember the last time I listened to a new CD this much in the first week of having gotten it. :coolio
-
Yeah, I listened to it again and even some of the shorter or less remarkable tracks have a chance to shine. The album may be a bit long, but as a full album its great.
-
"Month of May" is the best example of a song that sounds rather pedestrian on its own, but in the context of the album, it fits nicely in between two mellow tunes like "Suburban War" and "Wasted Hours."
Also, "Deep Blue" has slowly become a favorite of mine. Awesome tune. :tup :tup
-
BTW, I read that the band is supposed to be on The Daily Show tonight. It is on now (Comedy Central), so I suspect they will be on shortly.
-
The Suburbs is soooooo good...
-
The Suburbs is amazing, can't stop listening. These guys are 3 for 3 with absolutely fantastic albums. I can't think of anyone else who can match their run over the last decade; they have to be the best band in the world right now.
-
Saw them on The Daily Show, a cool thing here and there in the songs but overall certainly nothing to write home about.
-
I wouldn't expect you to like them anyway, but I certainly hope a Daily Show performance isn't all you're judging them on.
-
I wouldn't expect you to like them anyway
Taken out of context, that would be the most indie-snob thing to say. But we are talking about WPAPU Nick, so its fine.
-

Yes. Yes, it is. :tup :tup

They are up there, without a doubt, when talking about bands making the best music right now. :coolio
Saw them on The Daily Show, a cool thing here and there in the songs but overall certainly nothing to write home about.
Except that there is tons of great stuff to write home about.
-
I wouldn't expect you to like them anyway, but I certainly hope a Daily Show performance isn't all you're judging them on.
It is, and while I agree that two songs don't define a band, if you're not playing to impress on national television, then when are you?
I wouldn't expect you to like them anyway
Taken out of context, that would be the most indie-snob thing to say. But we are talking about WPAPU Nick, so its fine.
It still is somewhat snobbish intending on the intent. Sure it's not what I normally listen to, but I find things outside of prog that I enjoy, and it's dumb of people to assume others don't like something they do just because of genre. I just didn't find the songs entertaining all the way through, and frankly I thought the delivery was a little cliche and dumb.
@Kev, there was a bass part in the first song that certainly was something to write home about, like I said, there were things I liked.
-

To me, his point was not that they weren't trying to impress potential new listeners, but that you should not judge a band on one performance.
@Kev, there was a bass part in the first song that certainly was something to write home about, like I said, there were things I liked.
Okay.
-
Wasn't trying to be a snob. Most of us have a very good idea of what Nick likes, and I would be surprised if you dug Arcade Fire.
I've never seen a talk show performance that has done any band justice.
-
Honestly, Coldplay on The Daily Show was the best I've seen any band on TV. Well, excluding Rush, but they cut them off halfway through the song, so...
-

I think it's kind of fair. When I read your original post, I thought exactly the same thing ("I would not expect Nick to like them anyway").
I'm not saying you're some kind of prog elitist who thinks all other kinds of rock music are automatically worse because they are less difficult to play or not as long or... You know, some elitist shit.
You just seem to me like a guy who likes what he likes and doesn't like what he doesn't like. Like, I just skimmed your Top 50 Artists thread and it's probably fair to say at least 80% of the bands were prog-oriented. Nothing wrong with that. Doesn't mean you're closed-minded or anything of the sort. That's just what you like and what you're used to.
So when you come into this thread and pass off Arcade Fire - one of the most artistically respected, critically acclaimed, popular bands on the planet - as "nothing to write home about" after only seeing them perform once, I don't think it's so unfair for people to think, "OK. No surprise here."
-
Anyway, the band announced more NA tour dates this week, mostly West Coast. So it looks like I'll get to see them without having to travel to Quebec!
-
Good post, TOX. :tup :tup
And I am still half-raging over the announcements of those tour dates. Their album debuts at number 1 in the U.S., so they do a three-week tour in the fall of North America where the U.S. only gets seven dates, four of which are in the same state? That can't be smart. They should be taking advantage of their popularity surge by hitting spots all over the country.
But the new CD is still tremendous. :)
-
I agree with Nick. I saw them on the Daily Show and was massively underwhelmed.
-
The suburbs is a fantastic album.

I haven't gotten around to hearing this yet. What's it like?
-
I love
Heart of GlassSprawl II, but The Suburbs just feels like too much of the same stuff for me. It's good stuff, but I still can't discern where one song ends and another begins.
I haven't gotten around to hearing this yet. What's it like?
It's a lot of indie and a little bit disco. It sounds good, but in the way that spending an hour in a wave pool is fun: The first few waves are fun, but after that, it's just a bunch of ups and downs.
-
Interesting analogy, but I don't necessarily agree with it entirely. Yes, it is a like a ride with ups and downs, but the downs are still pretty "up," so to speak. 16 tracks and not a single weak link. :)
-
This is the first arcade fire album i've purchased and I am really enjoying it. I love the 80's vibe and the the flow of the album. Great stuff!
-
The end of "Suburban War" is heavenly. :coolio
-
Bumping this thread to say that I'm just watching a recording of the MSG live stream right now. Rococco is damn hypnotizing. Didn't like it at first, but it's a really neat track.
RO
COCCO!
Also, I didn't realize how much they all switched instruments. Really cool.
-
Looks like Arcade Fire is doing two shows in Chicago in late April. The aggravating thing about this is, you have to figure that they will be doing other shows in the States around the same time, but what happened to announcing them all at the same time? With the Chicago shows already on sale, they are likely to sell out fast, which blows for someone like me, who would consider making the trip up there to see them, but not if they are gonna come here (but just haven't announced it yet). Given the high ticket demand, I guess we could get tickets for the Chicago show, and then sell if them if they do end up coming to St. Louis, but that is still an annoying way to handle it. Grrrrrr...
-
Yeah, sounds like a pickle, Kev. I would travel to see them anywhere in the Northeast.
-
FUCK
YES

YAY! :heart :heart :heart

What would make me REALLY wanna check out Funeral?

It's fucking good so just do it.

What would make me REALLY wanna check out Funeral?
The fact that they won a grammy. That means they're a good artist.

^Knew you'd reply ;)
It's fucking good so just do it.
OKAY FINE, DAD

AND DONT BURN THE FUCKING RISOTTO THIS TIME

Fuck it, starting with the EP so I can have the whole discog.

I still can't believe that just happened. And did you see them play Ready to Start after? Win couldn't stop smiling it was adorable.
-
I think they were generally shocked that they won. The Grammys stink, but that was cool to see (I only tuned in to see them play).
As for their performances, "Month of May" was a trainwreck (too loud and all of the lights were annoying and distracting), but "Ready to Start" was good. Shoulda sent everyone home with "Sprawl II," though. :hat
-
I think EVERYONE was shocked! And I agree about the performances. You know what else was weird? Those BMX riders during Month of May :lol
-
AND DONT BURN THE FUCKING RISOTTO THIS TIME
ITS. RAW.
Glad to see they won album of the year! Also cool to see Maiden and Muse win grammys (even if they weren't ENTIRELY deserved this time around).

At the age of 15, Butler started attending the Phillips Exeter Academy preparatory school in New Hampshire. There he played varsity basketball and club softball, and performed obscene acts with several young boys, including Willy Wanker and the Chocolate Factories.

:rollin :rollin :rollin
-
:tup for the Grammy! Although it doesn't mean much. Also glad that a Montréal band got it! :P
-
I was shocked to hear Arcade Fire won the biggest award of the night-- I never thought The Grammies would actually recognize a truly sophisticated, adventurous, and thoughtful concept album like The Suburbs, when they have a history of honoring simple mainstream teen-pop garbage like Katy Perry. You could tell Barbara Streisand hadn't even prepared to say those words, "Arcade Fire-The Suburbs."
I think Month of May was a pretty good choice and I actually liked the intense strobes. The only thing that bothered me was how I could barely hear Regine's vocals. But I agree, Sprawl II would have been better :)
-
Also, the rage about the grammies is delicious: https://whoisarcadefire.tumblr.com/
The big mistake all of those people are making is thinking that the Grammys mean anything. They don't. Sure, it is cool to see a band we like win, especially the biggie like Album of the Year, but it ultimately doesn't mean a damn thing.
-
I mean I think it has cultural significance.
Edit: not Arcade Fire winning, specifically. The awards in general.
-
Eh, like that article posted in the PT thread said, the Grammys just promote the same very small subset of music that's out there. Maybe they decided to make it an upset, or maybe they actually thought The Suburbs was the best album, who knows, but normally that award would have been going to Taylor Swift or someone of that sort. I don't think the grammys have any real cultural significance when only ten bands get mentioned across several categories.
Of course, award shows are pointless anyways, but its nice to see a band I like get even more mainstream recognition. Unfortunately, they're too cool for me to listen to them now.
-

I guess I should actually legitimately give this band a chance instead of writing them off as a shitty indie/hipster band.

I'm just talking about the fact that they clearly mean something to the performers nominated and the majority of the people who tune in to watch the show.
-
If there's one thing I've learned in the past few years is that you should never write off a band because of whatever silly fans they have. Otherwise I wouldn't have gotten into Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Coheed & Cambria, Genesis, Marillion, Tool, etc. etc. etc...
@Antigoon: Oh no doubt they mean something to those people. I kinda expanded "cultural significance" to mean "everybody," which probably isn't the case.
-
This band is still yet to make it any further than my to-check-out list.
-
About half way through The Suburbs.
I...........................like it. :|

^Look who's a hipster now!

It has nothing to do with smileing over any music and everything to do with buying into a lifestyle.
-
I was joking. But smileing over that music seems to go hand in hand with hipster culture :P. Or at least a certain image board's music section.

AC is on another planet. I can't get into it. Aeroplane is a fantastic album though.

If you think the EP is really good then you're going to have your mind blown by the actually good albums.
Edit: Just managed to watch the video of the band at the Grammys. What an awesome performance of Month of May. Their reaction to the win is priceless. :D

Good lord, I've gone from being totally apathetic to this band to singing along with "The Suburbs" in one day.

I like The Suburbs a lot but I'm not as shocked as others that it won... I mean, really popular yet still obscure enough to be trendy indie-tinged rock is something I'd expect to win a grammy. Just sayin'.
-
Well, shit. Funeral is great. Quite a soundscape happening. I need more concentration on the next listen though.
-

I've listened to Funeral a couple of times and I think I like The Suburbs a bit better. Win's voice kinda grates on me on some Funeral songs.
-
I've still got SO much more listening to do for all their albums. I feel like I've hardly scratched the surface.
-
Good music is good music, peeps, regardless of fan bases, genres, etc. And Arcade Fire is quite obviously good music. Really good music, in fact. :)
-
I guess MM666 can now brag to his mates that he listens to indie but isn't a hipster. He'll look like a man.
-
Anyone saw the Kanye West tweet about Arcade Fire winning the Grammy? I thought it was pretty cool.
-
No. Wanna link to it?
-
Arcade Fire is playing Bonnaroo this year. Yippee. Now if they could please announce some more U.S. dates, that would be super. Given that their album debuted at number 1 here and they just won the Grammy for Album of the Year, I'd say we deserve a real tour, not just a few random dates like last fall.
-
No. Wanna link to it?
#Arcade fire!!!!!!!!!! There is hope!!! I feel like we all won when something like this happens! FUCKING AWESOME!
-
Last night a big radio station here was going to play that whole album non-stop... and I forgot about it. Now I have to check them out.

I love Animal Collective but I can't get into NMH yet. I'm halfway to douchebaggery. :lol
-
I've only heard one Animal Collective album, and I hated it. Just completely, utterly, viciously hated it. Everytime I heard someone talk about how good it was, I tried listening again. And that made me hate it even more.
-
I have Animal Collective's last album, and the songs tend to be either really, really good, or not good at all. "My Girls" has one of the most awesome and insanely catchy choruses I have ever heard, though.
-
I guess MM666 can now brag to his mates that he listens to indie but isn't a hipster. He'll look like a man.
Pretty much this.
I'm digging The Suburbs more and more with each listen.

Hipster victory!

I adore all three Arcade Fire albums but I think The Suburbs is the best, and I am glad it has gotten the respect it deserves.
And yes, "My Girls" from Animal Collective is insanely catchy. I just started listening to them a few months ago, and so far, my favorite song is Safer, which I think a lot of prog rockers would appreciate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rvPX8UlQ78

I can't say that The Suburbs is better than Funeral, but I still love it to death, and probably like it a bit more than Neon Bible (which is damn good, as well).

I think they've gotten better with every album, though Funeral was excellent to begin with.

No St. Louis date. Sonofabitch!!! :censored :censored :censored
-
Why 3 days in Chicago?
-
Arcade Fire AND Explosions in the Sky?
AHHHHHHHHHHHH
-
One could have a lovely nap before Arcade Fire went on. :p
-
Bump because Arcade Fire is awesome and I finally got to vote Funeral being better than Neon Bible but both are awesome which means I have heard both albums already cool.
-
Finishing 'getting into' Funeral before I touch Neon Bible.
-
Happily, a St. Louis date has been added for Thursday, April 21st! Tickets go on sale in a week. Hell yeah! :tup :tup
-
I have The Suburbs now. Haven't heard it yet. It's a boring Sunday so I might put it on later or tomorrow.
-
I know it'll be a huge grower, but all the same, after my first listen of Neon Bible: eh, pretty good.
-
The Suburbs are on now. It sounds really good too.
The band pressed each completed song to a 12" lacquer, then recorded it back for the digital master of the album.[11] As a result, the CD and digital versions of the album sound the same as the vinyl
I find that interesting.
So far, I like it more than Neon Bible.
-
"Deep Blue" is still one of those great sleeper songs that seems to rarely get talked about. Love that tune. :coolio
-
Ok where do I start with this band. Feel free to check my last.fm (click sig) if you feel like.
-
They only have 3 worthwhile albums, go with Funeral. Their latest album, The Suburbs, I really like. IMO it rivals with Funeral. The new album won a grammy.
I started right from the start, out of my freewill, with their 2003 s/t EP. Hell, that's even some good stuff. Everyone will tell you to go with Funeral though.
-
Ok where do I start with this band. Feel free to check my last.fm (click sig) if you feel like.
I started with the suburbs and loved it. It took a couple of listens though.
Funeral is my favourite out of the three but you can't go wrong with any of their their three albums.
-
Yeah, I started with The Suburbs and still find it to be their best. Their discog isn't exactly huge though, so you might as well get it all.
-
^I got it all, even the Live EP with David Bowie :lolpalm:
-
Three tickets have been bought for the St. Louis show. Hell freaking yeah! :coolio :coolio :coolio
-
^You're a lucky arsehole.
-
Awesome, Kev. Have fun on behalf of the rest of us ;)
-
I will. :coolio
-
I'd always enjoyed Funeral a lot, but it just clicked properly today.
:hefdaddy
-
Been spinning The Suburbs 3-4 times the last 3 days, and this album is fantastic.
Not a single bad song on it.
That is all. :hat
-
They should tour the Eastern part of the US where all the cool kids are. :)

Seriously, fuck.

Sprawl II is probably my favorite, but this album is so damn good overall. :metal

The day is here. We'll be rocking out to Arcade Fire downtown in about 11 hours. :tup :tup

Regular set:
Ready to Start
Rebellion (Lies)
Laika
Empty Room
Rococo
Modern Man
The Suburbs
Intervention
No Cars Go
Haiti
We Used to Wait
Keep the Car Running
Tunnels
Wake Up
Encore:
Month of May
Power Out
Sprawl II
Need I say more? :) :) :)
-
Empty Room :heart
-
I'm still not ughe on rocococo. Love that they eneded the show with something other than Wake UP tough.!
-
"Sprawl II" appears to be their standard encore closer this year, while "Wake Up" is often the regular set closer. Both worked great in those spots. The entire crowd doing the big chorus harmonies in "Wake Up" was amazing. And I was thrilled that not only were my four favorite songs played (which was predictable, as they always play all of them), but two of them were the last two songs on the whole concert ("Intervention" and "Rebellion (Lies)" being the other two songs). Awesome. :)
I am still a tad bummed that "Half Light II" wasn't played, but they abandoned that song in the live shows last year for whatever reason, so I wasn't expecting to hear it anyway. :(
-
That is one awesome set.

Pretty cool.
Anyone know if there's another album in the pipeline?

So I have their three studio albums on my iPod now. Funeral on first listen was pretty average, but after the second... :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Pretty cool.
Anyone know if there's another album in the pipeline?
I believe that they're currently working with James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem on a new record,

bump
Anyone ever play with these?

Interactive music videos for Neon Bible and Sprawl II. You can use your cam in the Sprawl II one and move your hands to the beat to keep the video going. They're both cool though. :) I probably prefer the Neon Bible one. It actually made me enjoy the song more.
EDIT: https://www.thewildernessdowntown.com/
Another! Turn your popoff block off and don't click any of the windows till the postcard part. It's amazing. You can enter your city or even an address or specific location.

Damnit, seeing this bumped had me hopeful for about four seconds that there was news about them working on new material. :censored

New album coming in October! wOOt!!!! :hat :hat :hat

Pretty sure James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem is producing it. Pretty excited about that.

I really liked the last album. Looking forward to the new one.

Holy hell that was pretty damn good.

Great tune! I cannot wait for the new album. :hat
-
Very cool song.
-
Been listening to it on repeat for the past hour or so, great stuff.
-
I swear, I cannot get Régine singing, "It's just a reflektor," out of my head. The way she sings that is so magical.
-
This is a good sign that the next album should be pretty cool. I like the song a lot but I'm not positive that it had to be 7 minutes. A very minor mark against it. :tup
-
I think the 7 minutes goes by really quickly thanks to the groove the song provides.
I've been addicted to these guys this week though, listened to Funeral like three times in two days.
-
Three more songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_fFAKrIntzY

So far all the songs have had a catchy groove to it. I like it.
-
Yep, I can't wait to hear this record. I love that video with the three tunes, featuring appearances by, among others, Bono, Rainn Wilson and Ben Stiller.
-
The new record is gonna be killer. Just watched their performance on Colbert, and it got me hella pumped.
-
Interestingly, they are doing some little mini-tour (like a handful of shows and appearances) right now as The Reflektors. They were even introduced and referred to as The Reflektors on Colbert the other night. I guess this is their attempt at being clever. :lol
Still can't wait for the new record. :coolio
-
I've liked the songs so far but I feel like this is gonna be my least favorite album so far. :-\
-
I've liked the songs so far but I feel like this is gonna be my least favorite album so far. :-\
How so? Personally I have a feeling this is gonna be my favorite of theirs, but you never know.
-
It's hard to imagine them topping Funeral, but you never know.
-
I've liked the songs so far but I feel like this is gonna be my least favorite album so far. :-\
I hate being that guy,but I was right.
-
The album was alright. Not bad, not excellent.. Not in my top30 so far this year.
-
I'm really disappointed actually. Maybe it could be because I'm not a big fan I'm not a fan of LCD Soundsystem...
-
Decent album, but it's definitely a step down from The Suburbs. I actually like the musical direction they're going in, but most of the songs should have been pared down and made more interesting.
-
Yeah it probably wont even make my top 50 of the year...
-
I don't know what y'all are on, cause this record is great. It's in my top 10 for the year.
-
It's pretty bad.
-
I like it, but I don't know if I love it. I definitely wish it was mixed a bit better. Their CDs already suffer from too much compression, and now it was produced by a guy who cranked the bass and drums way up, to where some of the melodies are drowned out in the mix. Again though, I like this CD, as almost every song is good, and several are really good or great (Afterlife, Joan of Arc and It's Never Over), but this is probably my least favorite of their four so far, which is no shame considering how much I love the other three.
-
I really like it. It's not among their best work, but there are some excellent parts to every song.
-
It's pretty bad.
Agreed. Afterlife is the only song I'll listen to couple years later.
-
Didn't liked it very much too, i only like 3 songs (Reflektor, We Exist, Porno).
-
It's pretty good. I prefer it to The Suburbs.
-
My ranking would be:
1 - The Suburbs :heart
2 - Neon Bible :heart
3 - Funeral :corn
4 - Reflektor :-\
Favorite songs (not in order):
Tunnels
Black Wave, Bad Vibrations
Suburban War
Rebellion (Lies)
No Cars Go
Ocean of Noise
The Suburbs
Month Of May
Intervention
Crown Of Love
-
Funeral is by far their best imo, great album.
-
1. Funeral
2. Neon Bible
3. Reflektor
4. The Suburbs
Each one is pretty far ahead of the previous.

U.S. concert dates are out. Got our tickets for the St. Louis at the pre-sale this morning. :coolio
Also, they are asking fans to wear formal attire or a costume to their shows. Not mandatory, but you know a lot of fans will. Should make for interesting-looking crowds. :lol :lol :hat

I hate to go here, but yeah, that's like the definition of hipster.
-
Well, I don't know what it means to be hipster, nor do I really care ;), so okay.
-
From wiki:
To the hipster, Bird was a living justification of their philosophy. The hipster is an underground man. He is to the Second World War what the dadaist was to the first. He is amoral, anarchistic, gentle, and overcivilized to the point of decadence. He is always ten steps ahead of the game because of his awareness, an example of which might be meeting a girl and rejecting her, because he knows they will date, hold hands, kiss, neck, pet, fornicate, perhaps marry, divorce—so why start the whole thing? He knows the hypocrisy of bureaucracy, the hatred implicit in religions—so what values are left for him?—except to go through life avoiding pain, keep his emotions in check, and after that, "be cool," and look for kicks. He is looking for something that transcends all this bullshit and finds it in jazz.
Obviously people use "hipster" to describe all kinds of modern attempts kids make to be cool and different and to be ahead of the trends, so whatever. I don't mean it in a bad way, I'm just messing. Come on, though. Formal wear at a rock concert? That's kinda like, when Yes told everyone they had to sit during "Tales" and wouldn't let people in the venue between songs :P
Anyway, if I remotely enjoyed Reflector as much as their other albums, I might go, even in formal wear. But I'm not gonna go because they'll probably play a lot of that material. And the concert is on a Monday night. Ouch.
-
Hipster
noun
a jet or current of liquid, often containing medicinal or cleansing agents, directed into a bodily part or cavity for medical or hygienic reasons
I keed, i keed...
-
I don't like Reflektor as much as their other albums either, but I do like it, and I do think most of the songs will be great fun live. And they'll still play plenty of the greats from the first three albums.
And did Yes really do that??
-
I am curious, I've heard this band's name a number of times and thought "Well, it's an original sounding name and it isn't really a BAD band name", and I had heard about this whole "dress up" requirement on Fark recently, so I'm curious what these guys sound like. Is there any other well know band that one would say they're similar to?
-
I can't think of any. They have a quirky, fun style that is very unique and very much their own.
Just go to YT and listen to Rebellion (Lies), Tunnels, Sprawl II, Intervention, Keep the Car Running, Power Out and Wake Up, and then report back. :coolio
-
The awesomeness of this song can never be overstated:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuSbELCNloc
-
Okay, so despite my notorious musical preferences, I AM capable of being open minded. None of that was by far the worst things I've ever heard. I don't think I would even resort to calling it bad. I definitely wouldn't run out to buy any of it, but if there was nothing else to listen to, I certainly wouldn't get irritable over it. Rebellion, Sprawl, and Power Out were preferable to me. Some of it's a little too electronic-sounding for my tastes. These guys have some pretty complicated instrumentation, and not necessarily in a bad way. Reding their wiki page, it appears that several members can play everything under the sun, which is pretty cool. I don't think this band is for me, but I'm glad to have had some representative samples of their stuff to check out.
-
Welcome to Arcade Fire!
I like them, but yeah, they are kinda boring, albeit in their own very unique and interesting way. :mehlin
-
Revive the thread? Revive the thread.
I'm not sure why, but I've been liking The Suburbs more and more than I remember and it's gotten to the point where I think I prefer it to Funeral. :eek
There were rankings further back here so...
1. The Suburbs/Funeral
3. Neon Bible
4. Reflektor
Mainly cause I'm not sure how to feel about that. :lol Funeral's always been an all-time classic for me.
-
Sadly I think this is one of those bands I will never "get". I watched the movie Her and LOVED the soundtrack, but all of their studioalbums have left me with a "its good but not amazing" feeling. Too bad.
-
I get that feel with Neon Bible, and the only one I'd consider subpar would be Reflektor. Funeral and The Suburbs are two albums I can't not love.
-
Reflektor is a lot of things, but sub-par is definitely is NOT one of them.
-
Reflektor is a lot of things, but sub-par is definitely is NOT one of them.
I thought it was pretty mediocre when I listened to it, but again, I'm not really the target audience so.
-
I like Reflektor, but since the initial phase of listening to it a lot after it first came out, I've barely revisited it. Again, it's good, but the first three are all a lot better.
-
As I see it, the problem is the concept of this album being "two records" and "different worlds," as Win has stated. First, I find this concept - well - sort of pretentious, especially considering the whole album is only 75 minutes. That aside, though, and being only a minor squabble, I don't think this concept executed well for those of us who purchased digital copies. Something about playing the album from start to finish makes it sound long, drawn out, bi-polar and in need of editing. There's a lot of great music on the album...it's just not presented as cohesively as the other albums, I think.
-
I think I said this already earlier in the thread, but the biggest problem with this record is the mixing of it. The low end is too in your face, most notably the bass and drums. I get that they wanted to emphasize the dance beats and grooves and whatnot, given the vibe they were going for, but instead of finding a good balance, the low end is too loud most of the time, often drowning out the melodies to the point where you have to strain to hear them. A song like Supersymmetry...man, if the whole album had that organic, lush feel, it would have benefited greatly.
-
The biggest problem is that Reflektor isn't good as their other albums :rollin
-
New song!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC30BYR3CUk
This was stuck in my head all day. Great tune.
-
Not sure how many fans this band still has here, but they have a new album coming in May. I am psyched.
The last one was pretty choppy, but did have Creature Comfort, which I consider a top 5 Arcade Fire tune, and Everything Now, Signs of Life, We Don't Deserve Love and Put Your Money on Me were all very good as well. Just hoping for a consistent record again, although I don't see them ever equaling Funeral or The Suburbs again.
-
Last two albums have been mostly dogshite. Loved this band from Funeral - The Suburbs though, but they don't seem to want to make that style of music anymore sadly.
-

That seems a bit harsh :lol, even if I agree that the first three albums are better than the last two. Reflektor was good, but didn't have any major highs, and Everything Now had some amazing highs, but some, to use your phrase, dog shit as well.
Considering it took them five years between their last album and this new one, and the new one is only 40 minutes long, it had better be damn good from start to finish. It really makes you appreciate the prolific artists who give us a lot of good music regularly.
-
If I ever got round to doing a list of my favorite albums I'm pretty sure both Funeral and Suburbs would feature highly indeed, Neon Bible is also a very good album.........but those last two - honestly I barely found anything enjoyable on them at all. Personal opinion and all, but that direction wasn't for me at all.
-
I don't think they've made an amazing album but the first 3 are decent, Reflektor is okay (has some highlights) but I do agree the last one is almost offensively bad. Maybe the new one will be good.

Reflektor was a tough nut to crack because of how suffocating the mix was/is, but I came around to liking most of it. I just don't really love anything from it. If I had to list my 20 favorite Arcade songs, I could probably list 4-6 songs from the other four albums and then nada from Reflektor, but if I had to list my bottom 10 Arcade Fire songs, probably half of them would be from Everything Now. :lol :lol

Will Butler left the band (the lead singer's brother) https://twitter.com/butlerwills/status/1505280724865359877
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7GjucHCQ5Y
when I heard I fell into a youtube hole of watching every live version of Rebellion (lies) I could find. He's the one who put on a big show of losing his goddamn mind everytime they played that song, It'll never be quite the same. I saw them open for U2 in 2005, in the wake Funeral becoming a huge deal, I'll never forget that.
-
Yeah, I reckon Will was always the super energetic guy always running around stage like his ass was on fire. I guess I am someone who figures they are all good as long as Win and Regine are there. And that is not meant to diminish the impact or importance of the many others who are a big part of the Arcade Fire eclectic sound.

agreed. I’m sure it’s a very collaborative process but Win and Régine are clearly the heart of this band
-
New album is good, but how good is still to be determined. Two listens in and many more to come.
-
It’s a grower. I love it. The Age of Anxiety tracks and the Lightning tracks are excellent. The Unconditional tracks are great. The only ones I’m not crazy for are the End of the Empire tracks and the title track but they’re in no way bad.
-
It's growing on me a little, but it seems wholly unspectacular so far. Five years since the last album, and this is the best 40 minutes of music they could come up with since? Oof. I do like the two Lightning tracks quite a bit, and everything else is pretty solid, but I find it underwhelming as a whole after a handful of listens. I will keep at it, though, in the hopes that the light bulb suddenly goes on.
-
I think 'good' is high praise for what is a very mediocre album in my opinion. It's not terrible or anything but it's almost worse to make an album that's just totally forgettable from start to end and this album is the sort of album that leaves your head as soon as the last song finishes. At least if an album is bad you might remember it for being bad, this just feels lukewarm.
-
I try to enjoy AF's latter discography best I can, but I can't deny that with each new album it feels like the band's peak is far behind them.
-

From a consistency standpoint, I agree, but the good news is that the last couple albums have sounded better from a mixing standpoint, so if they can get the quality of songs to match up with the improvement in sound, their best could be yet to come. Of course, their next album likely won't be till 2029. :lol :lol
