Greetings fellow DTFers!
Here's heat #7's results:
1) 64 Porcupine Tree
2) 62 Pink Floyd
3) 55 Opeth
4) 52 Rush
We are at that exciting moment where the votes count more than ever as this is the heat that determines...
WHO IS THE BEST THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At some point not too long after the conlusion of this final heat I'll post a wrapup thread to cover some comprehensive rankings and other related tidbits of information relevant to this series.
I'd really like to see this series archived but I realize it may work out a little easier to just archive either this final heat's thread or the wrapup one I'm doing after this and just link all the other threads in the OP. Show this series some love and let it be known if you support the archiving of it and as always thanks a bunch everyone!ijustnoticedanamusingerrorinthethreadtitle

Porcupine Tree is the correct answer.
-
Porcupine Tree of course.
I'm amazed Rush is out.
-
Lame
I abstain
I know one lil DTF member who ain't getting punch and pie.
-
PLM....come on...don't be that guy.
DOWN WITH THE TREE
GO FLOYD!!!
-
Pink Floyd, easy
-
This is cruel...my 2nd favorite band vs. my 3rd favorite band.
But the nod goes to Porcupine Tree.
-
I'm confused. What's the difference between the two options?
-
I'm confused. What's the difference between the two options?
One's from Britain and the other one's from England.
-
Pink Floyd
Porcupine Tree's great albums:
- Voyage 34
- The Sky Moves Sideways
- Signify
(- In Absentia) = when I'm in the right mood
Pink Floyd's great albums:
- Meddle
- Wish You Were Here
- The Dark Side of the Moon
- Animals
- Atom Heart Mother
(-The Wall)
(- A Momentary Lapse of Reason)
(- The Division Bell) = When I'm in the right mood.
So Floyd, by far.
-
By a Tip of the nose it's Porcupine Tree followed by Pink Floyd.
-
lol
PF
Also, to answer your call black_floyd, I support the archiving of this series of threads.
-
Both are close to my favourite bands, but I have seen PT live this year and that give them the nod ahead of PF :tup
-
Floyd!
-
Porcupine Tree of course.
I'm amazed Rush is out.
This on both counts.

PF
Also, to answer your call black_floyd, I support the archiving of this series of threads.
Thanks a lot buddy!
I sincerely ask more of you to step forward...

Go Floyd!

PT ftw

Porcupine Tree!

Floyd. Only for the sake of sniping Porcupine Tree.
-
Very close, but I went with PT.
-
PT is great, but come on, it's the Floyd.
-
btw I'm not going to vote but if I did it'd be for Pink Floyd
I mean, I like PT, but I don't orgasm all over their music the way everyone else seems to
-
Pink Floyd.
One of the most epic turn of events ever, seeing Rush get knocked out. (Not that I was happy, but it certainly was unexpected.)
For me PF and PT are very, very close, but it goes to Floyd. It just has too, I really wouldn't be able to forgive myself.
I also support the archiving of the final round (and the wrap up thread). We should do this every year, and then compare DTF's tastes from year to year.
-
Lame

this but:
@Black_Floyd I loved the idea! I think it was a great idea, and I love how you set it up, and I think you did everything you could. Just don't like how the voting turned out.
-
Steven Wilson and Those Other Guys. Floyd (and early PT) is not my kind of music. Too spacey, too stonery.
-
Rush is the correct answer.
-
Despite the results of this poll, I STILL say Rush is the best them on this forum.
But alas, I went with Floyd. I think their discography is solid throughout. I enjoy PT once in a while, but they have never clicked for me in the way that my list of favorite bands (which includes PF) has.
-
btw I'm not going to vote but if I did it'd be for Pink Floyd
Well then, why not just vote for Floyd?
-
Floyd
Though you all know why I think this thread fails automatically
-
Rush is the correct answer.
-
I went with PT. I like Floyd a lot, but I don't think they are in my top 10 band list, while PT is.
TBH I'm surprised to see that Floyd made it to the finals, but not Opeth or Rush.
-
Porcupine Tree
Fuck you old fogeys.
-
I'm sorry that us 'old fogey's' actually like quality music.
You should try it sometime. ;)
-
Pink Floyd, easy
-
PT is great, but come on, it's the Floyd.
Of any of the bands that have been listed, PT is my favorite (that is the poll question, right??). Floyd is amazing as well, but they have not had quite the impact PT has had on me. So I'm not going to vote for them just because they are more "classic" or whatever. I think there is a lot of that on these forums. Older bands are automatically given a higher status and people act like you're crazy to like the newer band more (not saying you're doing this in particular, just mean the general attitude I've seen a lot). It was a tough choice, but when it comes down to which band I listen to more, PT wins by a mile.
-
PT is great, but come on, it's the Floyd.
Floyd is great, but come on, it's the Tree.
-
Hard, two of my favorite bands.
Think I'll go with Floyd.
-
Pink Floyd, although I can enjoy some PT from time to time.
-
I'll go with Floyd over PT -- but I wish Rush could have at least been in the final. Maybe next year. And yes: archive, archive, archive :tup
-
PT.
-
30 vs 30 :omg: Epic poll
-
Pink Floyd
I've never listened to Porcupine tree, but if they win, I'll sure have to give them a listen. :)
-
You should give them a listen anyway.
Porcupine Tree. I've never liked Floyd and I've tried on numerous occasions to change this, but they just don't click with me.
PT on the other hand, I've only been listening to for a few months but they're already a top 5 band!
And to the people saying 'should have been Rush' or 'should have been Opeth' or whatever; this isn't YOUR favourite band. This is DTFs favourite band collectively.
-
Looks like I just made it a tie again!
-
I also support the archiving of the final round (and the wrap up thread). We should do this every year, and then compare DTF's tastes from year to year.
Thanks man! You're welcome to crash on my davenport if you're ever too drunk too drive.
@Black_Floyd I loved the idea! I think it was a great idea, and I love how you set it up, and I think you did everything you could. Just don't like how the voting turned out.
Much appreciation to you good sir! I hear ya on the results thing but at least the "black" in "black_floyd"(Opeth's Blackwater Park is responsible for the first half of my name) made it to the final four and the "floyd"(obviously the other half of my name) is in the finals. Pretty good turnout for my username since they'll both be medalists :coolio
I'll go with Floyd over PT -- but I wish Rush could have at least been in the final. Maybe next year. And yes: archive, archive, archive :tup
Glad you could show your support for the archiving as well. When I make my will should I pencil you in for Nirvana's Incesticide tablature book or the German portion of my beer bottle collection?
-
I believe the standard term is 'crown', not 'coronate'. ;)
Anyway, Porcupine Tree, just.
-
I believe the standard term is 'crown', not 'coronate'. ;)
Anyway, Porcupine Tree, just.
Glad to oblige as soon as you can find me a number that rhymes with "crown." ;)
-
I like the pictures in OP. PF looking moderately happy, and PT looking like a member of their family died 5 mins ago.
-
Pink Floyd. While I love PT, Floyd just resonates more deeply with me.
-
33 vs 33....
yikes! gonna be a close one.
-
And to the people saying 'should have been Rush' or 'should have been Opeth' or whatever; this isn't YOUR favourite band. This is DTFs favourite band collectively.
I chose my wording carefully for this exact reason: "I wish Rush had at least made it to the final," so I don't think that's inappropriate. I understand the concept of the poll.
I believe the standard term is 'crown', not 'coronate'. ;)
Are they not synonyms?
-
I'm not really grasping why this thread should be archived.
-
I'm not really grasping why this thread should be archived.
Perhaps coronated, then?
-
am I the only one that would've never guessed this outcome?
-
Porcupine Tree? Yes. Pink Floyd? Not this high. I though it would stand between PT or Rush.
-
Floyd. Only for the sake of sniping Porcupine Tree.
+1. They're both overrated, but PF much less so, and they're much more influential. Yeah, not exactly the point of the poll, but had to get it off my chest. :police:
-
I'm not really grasping why this thread should be archived.
Though I respect and will remember the amount of work black_floyd put into this, the way the membership has voted makes this series of polls seem more like A Nightmare to Remember to me. Archiving it just because black_floyd put so much work into it would be a little bit like commemorating the death of some poor sod who died fighting in the Communist Revolution by holding a memorial of the children who died of malnutrition during Mao's "Great Leap Forward" years later.
+1. They're both overrated, but PF much less so, and they're much more influential. Yeah, not exactly the point of the poll, but had to get it off my chest.
Yeah. Voting PT over PF is kinda like voting Breaking Benjamin over Tool. Both are good, but one is slightly undifferentiated, and wouldn't be there if not for the other.
-
and wouldn't be there if not for the other.
Why does that even matter?

Why does that even matter?
In the end, it doesn't really matter.

In the end, it doesn't really matter.
Nothing else matters.
-
and wouldn't be there if not for the other.

In the end, it doesn't really matter.
Exactly. Is the first man to ever play a guitar better than everyone else who has been played since, since they wouldn't have been there without him? Of course not.
-
and wouldn't be there if not for the other.
Why does that even matter?
In the end, it doesn't really matter.
Then why did you say it in the first place?
-
In the end, though, it's all about what people like. And I haven't heard one thing from Pocrupine Tree which I like that wasn't done better previously by Pink Floyd. Sure, Porcupine Tree have done things that don't sound like Floyd, but those are the things I generally don't like. Bonnie the Cat comes to mind.
Saying I like PT better than PF would be like saying I like Rush better than Zeppelin-- but only because I love Rush's first album and don't care for the rest of the stuff.
-

I'm sorry, but I just can't agree with this.

That's OK.

Exactly. Is the first man to ever play a guitar better than everyone else who has been played since, since they wouldn't have been there without him? Of course not.
My parents are better than me, since I obviously wouldn't be here without them.

Completely agree!
Pink Floyd have had so so much impact on the music world and I really respect them as true pioneers. Veterans of rock, a status that Porcupine Tree will probably never even come close to achieving.
But I prefer Porcupine Tree's music. I just... like it more! Not even a difficult decision. Really good, it is.
-
I agree as well...but PF is my favorite of the two
-
Pink Floyd, PT a close second.
-
i love PF, but I love PT more.
-
i love PF, but I love PT more.
same here..
-
Definitely Porcupine Tree for me.
-
Pink Floyd.
I dont like the idea of Porcupine Tree taking the top spot.
-
Pick my favorite band you say? Rush.
But I guess for this I'll go with Porcupine Tree.
-
Pink Floyd only had one good album, and that was A Saucerful of Secrets.
-
Pink Floyd only had one good album, and that was A Saucerful of Secrets.
wat is this i don't even
-
Definitely Porcupine Tree - my favourite band besides Dream Theater.
-
I voted Floyd. I'm not hugely fond of most of their albums, but they still had some very good songs, enough so to wipe the floor using Steven Wilson turned upside down as a mop.
-
If PF wins, DTF would have chosen my favorite band besides DT. Too bad I don´t consider the other 3 bands good.
-
Honestly have to go with Pink Floyd.
-
I'm not really grasping why this thread should be archived.
Because it generated a shitload of traffic and just about every heat had more than 100 votes which is a startlingly higher level of participation than any other poll series I recall seeing on DTF.org. Also I don't see how the archiving of this thread is any more absurd than the archiving of these:

I liked 'em too. I just found it silly to draw the line at this thread where other threads that were so random and forgettable got in. It doesn't make any sense.
-
Black Floyd, regardless of all your hard work, your poll results don't visually resemble the male genitalia. Thus, your pollathon will quickly descend into obscurity. Better luck next time.
-
But my "pole" results do.
-
This poll would be archive worthy is suddenly you changed the rules and started a new final thread with only two options: 1.Rush and 2. Rush.

Good call. Those should probably all be deleted. But still, not that this thread is bad or anything, but we never archive P/S threads. And I mean, not that there's anything wrong with this one, but it's just a bunch of random bands you picked to have people vote on (and you left off a bunch of good ones, too, by the way). So why is it special enough to archive?

actually bosk, your wrong. We picked the band, and this is easily the most well put together poll I've ever seen on DTF. The fact that a lot of people paid no attention to it until later rounds, does not change the fact that he gave us the choice to submit five bands to be voted upon. They weren't random at all.
-
Can't believe Porcupine Tree made it to the end... so many of those other bands were so much better than them.

I just gave it another listen, yup don't like it, the only redeeming factor is Gavin Harrison's drum work. I'm generally a fan of most PT but songs that are a miss for me are a huge miss.

I'm not really sure why there's some apparent exclusion against P/S archiving eligibility. I think a thread's own merits should dictate it's archivability not pretense. Also a lot of folks had a really good time following this thing and it'd just be nice to see all that love recognized by having it up there with other very-well received threads.
And I mean, not that there's anything wrong with this one, but it's just a bunch of random bands you picked to have people vote on (and you left off a bunch of good ones, too, by the way). So why is it special enough to archive?

edit: That sounded mean, I don't mean that I don't appreciate it, I really do, it's a good survivor but for archiving I don't think so.
I've actually spent between 15 and 20 hours total time between reading others' posts, strategizing format ideas, tabulating individual heat results, and gone to excruciating lengths including quadruple- and even quintuple-checking every heat's results-even the first two which had rosters of 106 and 76 bands respectively. My usual method was to look for the highest numbers first for bands like PT, Opeth, Rush, etc. and then work my way down so I could start with a ranked list and then I'd check the alphabetized results in the poll thread against my newly-typed Office document and then check the ranked list in the Office document against the alphabetized list in the poll thread. I lost my place a couple times during one heat's tabulation and may have checked a total of seven times.
Despite all the format-bashing I've witnessed throughout this series I haven't seen one person gripe about an error in tabulation which should bode well for my efforts.
I just don't get all the objections to archiving this thing as it was ridiculously popular if you take into account that the only other threads to ever get nearly 100 different people checking them out the first day they're posted are probably ones related to major DT news such as new album releases.

9 bad albums in a row? Which ones?

I didn't vote for them but am still happy with the result.
Btw bf, I appreciate the effort you put into this and don't see why the hell so many people are against archiving, as if it would be wrong or something ???
I'll start a poll on whether or not this should be archived, and then that can be archived too :neverusethis:

Are you sure you're thinking of Rush? Like...THE Rush?
Rush has released only 3 weak albums. None of them were consecutive.
-
It's interesting how vocal the Rush fans are (and I am a huge one myself, so not bashing Rush fans). If the result had been opposite, with PF losing to Rush, I don't think we'd have seen the long line of defiant Floydian defenders we've seen from the Rush camp. Not that I'm surprised, really, since Rush fans are often extremely fanatical, but it's still a curious phenomenon.

Yeah, those Rush fans need to stop giving the rest of us a bad name, with all of their sobbing and whatnot. :P
Cool to see Floyd win. Once my top 3 favorite bands all got to the final four, I would have been happy with seeing any of them win. :)

As I posted in the What are you listening to right now Thread, today is Pink Floyd day.
I've started with A Momentary Lapse of reason, followed by The Division Bell.
Then I started from the top with The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, A Saucerful of Secrets, Soundtrack from the Film More and now moving to Ummagumma.
