Here's the list of bands appearing:

The Scorpions

Vince Neil
Kix
Winger
L.A. Guns
Warrant
Nelson
Trixter
Jetboy
Dizzy Reed (of G&R)

2 stages, 11 hours of pure awesomeness.  I signed up for an account on the M3 site, so I could get the presale info for tomorrow.  A pack of 4 lawn seats for $100.  Unreal.

Well, admittedly, your tastes fall a lot more on the heavy side of metal than on the glam/hair side, so this wouldn't exactly be totally up your alley.

Only bands I would be interested in seeing Is Scorpions   Cinderella/Kix ( both were more blues based rock than hair metal, but they got lumped into this group because of the image)

I actually liked early Kix circa 1983.

I've opened for Steve Whiteman's band Funny Money several times.  He's kind of a tool.

Never liked Kix.  I just didn't like the singers voice.

I had an old King Biscuit show on cassette that I wore out, and I had their first album. Long before Live Wire.

Got tix because I want to see the Scorpions (saw them once, not a good memory because the douche running the soundboard clearly had hearing problems) and Cinderella (never seen before). I have seen Vince Neal with and without Crue and that will be an extended piss break. I hear Winger puts on a good show so that will be fun to see. Saw Kix open for Judas Priest last year at the same venue, nothing objectionable there. ZO2 is terrible. The rest of the line-up is whatever...

If it was Nissan Pavilion, I would have been ok with lawn seats. But my experiences on the lawn at Merriweather have been terrible. Unless you are right in the front, seeing the stage has been a problem for me. I avoid the lawn like the plague there.

I don't mind it so much, really.  I like the freedom that lawn seats at venues provide.  I'm not assigned a specfic seat where I'm scrunched in between people in varying states of hygenic distress.  I'll bring some binoculars.  I'I can't see as well, it isn't AS important, because I can still hear it.  Plus I can bring my own comfy lawn chairs to sit in.

Well, to be fair, most of these bands were popular before you were born, but if you'd heard of nobody else, I would've at least figured you'd know who Whitesnake is.  "Here I Go Again"?

It's a shame that Skid Row and Sebastian Bach have never been able to reunite--I thought the albums they made together were amazing.
Glad to see Whitesnake and Tesla high on the list, but was hoping Cinderella would be back again (I really hope their 2010 tour won't be their last).

Should be a good show.  My impressions of the lineup (for no better reason than I feel like posting):

-Kix:  Eh.  They never thrilled me, but I wouldn't mind seeing them along with some other bands.
-Warrant:  Say what you will about them, but they wrote catchy, well-written songs and put on a great show.
-L.A. Guns:  Never was a fan, but as with Kix, wouldn't mind seeing them with other bands I want to see.
-Jetboy:  ...  Why are these guys still around again?  Somebody help me out here.

-Whitesnake:  Saw them 3 times in the late '80s and early '90s--once for each of their albums in what I consider their greatest 3-album run of Slide It In, s/t, and Slip of the Tongue.  Coverdale isn't what he used to be, and the rest of the band is just a revolving door.  I haven't bought any of the albums in the last decade either.  That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing them.
-Tesla:  Such a great band.  Saw them on the tour supporting their last album, and it was a pretty good show.  They still bring it.  My only criticism is that they downtune a few of their songs (they really HAVE TO for JK to be able to sing them), and unlike a lot of other bands, you can really tell on a few of their songs, and the songs kind of lose a bit of energy.  Edison's Medicine comes to mind as being the most disappointing from when I saw them.  That's my favorite song of theirs, and something about downtuning it sucked the intensity right out.  But still, great band that still puts on a great show overall.
-Sebastian Bach:  I haven't really followed him since he left Skid Row, so I can't say how his shows are.  I still consider him one of the best metal singers and one of the best metal voices of all time.  I would be intrigued to see him.  I'm assuming he plays a lot of the Skid Row stuff?
-Lita:  I would almost certainly take a restroom/food break during her set.
-Mr. Big:  I would love to see them.  They could possibly end up being the surprise favorite of the night.  Although, since I'm posting that very fact, I guess that takes away from the "surprise" element a bit.  Okay, now I'm confused.
-Slaughter:  Eh, okay.  Really good musicians.  A couple of songs I liked a bit back in the day, but nothing that REALLY grabbed me.  Would watch.
-Great White:  See Slaughter (but probably slightly less raw talent).
-Firehouse (yeah, I'm skipping bands now because there are too many I just don't care about):  I liked their first two albums well enough.  I considered them a good, but not great, band.  Wouldn't mind seeing them at all.  I hear they still put on a pretty good show.
-Faster Pussycat:  Saw them a LONG time ago as an opening act.  In fact, I think I may have seen them open 2 or 3 shows altogether.  The fact that I can't really remember should tell you what I thought of them.  They were okay as a crowd-warmer, but nothing to remember.
-the other bands:  I either haven't heard of them or just don't care.

All in all, sounds like a fun show.  I would view a show like that along the lines of:  "Overall, there are maybe a couple of bands I would go out of my way to see.  But as a package deal, it should be a lot of fun."

Kix is a surprisingly good band.  They're obviously very big in the Baltimore area.  Steve Whiteman is a total toolbag - I've opened for his other band (Funny Money) a number of times.  That aside, he really is an excellent frontman.

Jani Lane wasn't with Warrant last year at M3.  The guy sounded just like Jani.  Unreal.  Great tunes, even aside from the well known ones - 32 Pennies, Mr. Rainmaker, Machine Gun.  Really good stuff.

I hadn't gotten turned on to L.A. Guns until my old singer insisted that I give them a listen a couple years ago.  Now, I do very much like them and totally loved their set last year.

Jetboy: Waiting in the bathroom line.

Whitesnake, I've never seen, but regardless of who's in the "revolving door" (exactly how I also would've described the band), I look forward to being able to finally see David Coverdale live.  20 years ago would've been much cooler, but better late then never, I guess.  Though I could say the same for all these bands.

Tesla I haven't seen and am very much looking forward to.  I feel like they were lumped in with hair metal, but weren't really hair metal.  Kinda like the thinking man's hair metal.  Good tunes.

Sebastian Bach, I saw a couple years ago, opening for Dokken and Poison.  He sounded like he'd just stepped out of 1989.  Fantastic voice, still.  The soundman must not have known what the hell he was doing, because their sound was horrible.  He did a lot of Skid Row (opened with Here I Am) and some solo stuff.

Lita is a hot soccer mom who plays guitar and rocks.  Reason enough to want to see her.

My love for Mr. Big is no secret.  I've seen them once, at a club here in Hershey.  After Paul Gilbert left.  This is my biggest reason for being at M3 this year.  To see the ORIGINAL lineup kicking ass will be more awesome than I will likely be able to handle completely sober.

Slaughter, I always liked.  Mark Slaughter has one of the more recognizeable voices of hair metal, IMO.  He was doing background vox and rhythm guitar for Nelson last year (who also sounded unbelievably good).  I saw Slaughter and Danger Danger both open for Kiss.  My very first concert.  July 11, 1990.  Danger Danger only has a couple of hits, really, but I'm still interested in hearing Bang Bang live.

Great White, I dig, but not a HUGE highlight of the day,  Firehouse, maybe, as they have a few decent tunes, but are mostly known for their two big ballads.  Faster Pussycat, I saw open (with Trixter from last year's M3) for Kiss the second time I saw them.  October 17, 1992.  I went with my sister, who was the whole reason for my falling in love with Kiss.  I wasn't really into hair metal then, so I didn't pay much attention.  I'm looking forward to seeing them again.  Hurtsmile is Gary Cherone's new band, from what I've gathered, so that should be interesting.  Black and Blue and Pretty Boy Floyd will be amusing.  Never heard of Big Noize.

It'll definitely be a fun day and worth the $45 price tag for a two day show.  Though we haven't yet decided for sure if we'll go for Friday's show and spend the night yet or just go early Saturday.

I didn't know about Hurtsmile.  Regardless of how they are as a band, you should get a good show simply because Gary is fronting.  When I saw Extreme a couple of years ago, I was blown away by how much energy he has and how good his voice still sounds.

After last year's debacle - concession stands actually ran out of water on a miserably hot day, very poor management - there is no way I would support this festival again. I was somewhat tempted because I have never seen Whitesnake and I am very interested in Hurtsmile. Of the other bands I am actually interested in, I have seen them all play multiple times and, other than Tesla, none are on the list of bands I would go out of my way to see again...

Definitely.  I didn't care for the Cherone fronted Van Halen, but I DID get to see Extreme at a little club in Norfolk VA on the Punchline tour.  Great show, with Mike Mangini on drums.  As far as Hurtsmile, from wiki:

Quote
Besides brothers Gary and Mark Cherone, who also play together in Slip Kid, a The Who tribute band, the band features Joe Pessia, who plays with Tantric and was the bassist for Bettencourt's DramaGods and drummer Dana Spellman, who was a student of Extreme's former drummer Mike Mangini.

I might check out some samples on Amazon to see what it sounds like.  I'm sure it'll be good stuff.

It could have been WAY better run in that respect, I totally agree.  Just gonna cross my fingers and hope for the best this year.  Looking forward to seeing a lot of these bands.

I didn't care for the Cherone fronted Van Halen, but I DID get to see Extreme at a little club in Norfolk VA on the Punchline tour.  Great show, with Mike Mangini on drums.

I saw the Cherone-fronted Van Halen at MSG and, having seen him prior to that point with Extreme on the III Sides tour, I knew he had the talent and personality to lead that band, as well as the range to comfortably sing both the Sammy and DLR tunes. However, he was literally kept to the side of the stage so Eddie could stand center stage and have his ego stroked all night. Cherone was never given the chance to really establsh himself with that band and I think it could have worked if Eddie wasn't such a massive douche.

Got to see Extreme twice on the recent tour and Cherone sing on MP's Amazing Journey tribute band. He really impressed me with how well he handled The Who material. That was a great show and well worth the road trip to NYC...

Hurtsmile is on my radar. Wish I got to see Tribe of Judah. It's a shame that band did not take off...

Nope.  Johnny Solinger.  Bach was there last year, as you saw, and he sounded amazing.  How he's managed to continue to sound as good as he does, I don't know.  Last time I saw Dokken, a few years ago, Don didn't even bother reaching for the big notes.

For years, he did a lot of professional theatre stuff here in southern Ontario at the Shaw Festival.  Local and well-renowned Shakespearean-like musical shows.  Plus all the Broadway stuff he did... keeps the voice in top form.

NBach was there last year, as you saw, and he sounded amazing.  How he's managed to continue to sound as good as he does, I don't know.

I haven't followed closely, but from what I understand, the answer is simply that he takes care of his voice.  He is smart enough to know that his voice is his money-maker, so he's done well to take care of himself.  I know for quite awhile, he has been doing a lot of other things on the side as well that require him to keep his voice in proper shape.  I know he was doing some broadway musical type stuff, and I think he has been doing radio and/or tv ads as well.

As far as the bands on that bill, does anyone feel that there is anything wrong with the lineup?  I mean, in terms of bands that look like they don't below, or feel like they are too high up or too low on the bill?  I'm not suggesting that there is a problem.  Just curious as to whether anyone here sees anything...odd.
Title: Re: Baltimore Area Hair Metal Fans Rejoice!
Post by: Sir GuitarCozmo on February 02, 2012, 09:29:43 AM
That's really surprising, because you just kinda expect guys from that era to party it up and not take care of themselves.  I know he had alcohol problems for a while (I think it was alcohol), so it's nice to see that he's taken good care of himself, vocally.

Not sure about the bands low on the bill thing.  The good thing about this gig is that it's two stages.  A big main stage with video screens, where the seating and main lawn area are, then behind that, there's another, somewhat smaller stage.  What happens is while one band is playing, tear down and setup is going on on the other stage, back and forth, so that there's always a band playing with little to no overlap.  I'm assuming Queensryche will be the final act on Saturday, preceded by Cinderella and Ratt.  Cinderella was there 2 years ago and stole the show, IMO.
Title: Re: Baltimore Area Hair Metal Fans Rejoice!
Post by: bosk1 on February 02, 2012, 09:40:22 AM
It looks to me like Queensryche is third on the bill, below Cinderella and Ratt.  And, honestly, I think that's right where they should be.  A few Queensryche fans are up in arms about them even playing on the bill in the first place, which I don't really get.  That's why I was asking.  For example, from another board:

Quote
As a fan I am embarrassed they are even playing a festival with the likes of those bands mentioned.  Pure cash grab.

Quote
Otherwise I wouldn't run the site or this forum. The point in talking about Queensryche these days isn't to just take random, blatant shots. It's about getting the message out there that what the Tates are doing is downright idiotic and burying the band's legacy.

Are our comments being heard? I know they are. I can tell you without doubt that labels, potential management teams, peers of the band and some of the band members themselve all read this forum religiously.

Will that lead to change? That's the question and one that has no easy answer. But the drum keeps beating. WE, the fans that can see the forest from the trees and see what the Tates are doing (and what the other band members to their shame aren't doing).

And the drum will keep beating as long as the situation is still there. "Queensryche" is bigger than just a business for four guys (at this point) to make money on. We all know that, otherwise we wouldn't be here as fans.

Personally, that doesn't make much sense to me.  My take on it:

Quote from: bosk1
Personally, I have almost zero problem with this.  There is more than enough to criticize QR management and band leadership about, but to me, this isn't it.

As far as playing under Cinderella and Ratt:  Yeah, it's kinda sad.  But as far as where the band is now in their career, they simply aren't as big a draw as either of those bands.  At least, that's what the promoters feel.  And I can't disagree when I look at their sales numbers and the size venues they are playing.  We can talk all day about how they shouldn't even be in this position, and that's all completely legitimate to gripe about.  I have the same gripe, and I think anyone who truly appreciates the band's legacy should look back on the past and be upset that the band let his happen.  But in terms of booking gigs here in the now, the reality is that they are probably billed as high as they deserve to be.

As far as playing on this bill with these bands at all:  Again, this is a situation QR put themselves in.  They haven't truly been "the thinking man's band" in a LONG time.  But aside from that, I still don't really have any major heartburn over them being on this bill.  There was a time when you could separate QR from "hair metal."  But the reality is, in this day and age, most '80s metal gets lumped together, and that's just the way things are.  Most fans don't even really draw much of a distinction anymore.  Take bands like Tesla, for example.  They were always basically a straightforward hard-rock band.  Yet they were lumped together with the glammers.  They've played with most of the bands on this bill.  Take bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest.  Clearly not "hair metal."  But they also have played on bills with most of these bands.  And I could go on and on.  Point is, there is a huge overlap in the fan bases, and there really isn't a good reason that I personally can see why all the above bands shouldn't tour together under the more broad banner of '80s rock.  And whether we like it or not, that's precisely what they have done and will continue to do until rockers from that era just aren't able to do it anymore at all.  :lol

Bottom line is, it's a decent gig that gets them in front of a lot of fans.  I can understand the complaints.  But in this fan's opinion, I see nothing much to complain about.  These is certainly a much, MUCH more respectable gig than the cabaret.  Honestly, QR being on this bill and other similar ones almost seems like a no-brainer to me in this day and age.  I can think of a pretty good list of things to criticize the band and management for in recent memory, but this ain't it.

Personally, I don't get why some might feel that an '80s "hair metal" festival is somehow "beneath" Queensryche.

Interesting.  To someone like me who's kind of a casual fan, anybody complaining about them playing on a hair band bill comes off slightly elitist/snotty, but that's only based on what you've indicated above.  Maybe I'm wrong.  The M3 forum is split on it.  I read that they were supposed to be the headliner, but it got leaked somehow and then they were switched with Cinderella, others say QR is still listed first on the M3 Facebook page, so it's difficult to say.  I know 2 years ago, they posted set times, prior to the gig, but I can't remember if they did last year.  I'll keep an eye out to see what happens.

I really don't see anything wrong with QR playing on the same bill as Ratt/Cinderella.  I'm a fan of all those bands and I think this caters to people, like myself, who are fans of old school rock/metal.  If QR was playing with Nickelback or a Lincoln Bizkit type band, I could understand the outrage.  But Ratt/Cinderella, while their sound may differ from QR, are from the same era and generally have simular fans.

Since bosk decided to bring the conversation over here. Here is my two cents:

What is odd is -- this is a festival of hair bands. Queensryche is NOT a hairband. yes, they've (through management) thrown their lot in to make money. But anyone who knows anything about rock and metal history, isn't calling QR a hairband.

I don't think Queensryche should be playing a festival like this. I don't see Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Rush, or any of those playing these. I think QR and DT co-headlined M3 a few years back (could be wrong), but while mostly hairband-ish, the fact the two were together sorta gave the thing a pass.

But I think most Dream Theater fans would be like "WTF is up with this, DT on a hairband festival?" Same goes for fans of Rush or Fates Warning, etc.

That was the overall point being made.

As my wife pointed out to bosk1, to which he couldn't disagree, Queensryche's management led them down this path, and now instead of trying to push forward, she's thrown their lot in with the hair metal stigma. What they SHOULD be doing is fighting their way out again. But they aren't.

Anyway, as I said at BdR, and as I'll say here...Queensryche should NOT be playing this festival. And I think if Dream Theater was doing this, instead of Queensryche, 99.9 percent of Dream Theater fans would be happy to see them play, but questioning just what the hell was going on. Because yes, the festival IS below them.

Call that view "snotty" all you want Cozmo, but had the band been Dream Theater, everyone knows the majority of DT fans would think the same thing.

So let's see here, who all in the 4 years M3 has been going are not hair bands (IMO)?

Extreme
Gilby Clarke
Slamm
Scorpions
ZO2
Big Noize
Hurtsmile
Night Ranger
Queensryche
Drumwars
Streetlight Circus

Queensryche is not the only band to have played M3 that didn't necessarily fit the overall spirit of the bill.  To say they should NOT be playing the festival, eh, whatever.  That's your $0.02.  I'm looking forward to seeing them again.  It sounds like a lot of fans are disappointed with them nowadays, but I have no doubt they'll put on a good show.  Quotes like this:

Quote
As a fan I am embarrassed they are even playing a festival with the likes of those bands mentioned.  Pure cash grab.

are snotty, whether anybody wants to admit it or not.  What I read there is "My intelligent-prog band is above playing with the kind of neanderthal rock bands that are on this bill.  They should be ashamed of themselves."  Cash grab.  So what?  They gotta put dinner on the table just like everybody else.

I get that people don't think they fit the bill, but at the end of the day, why does it matter?  It will be a great show and Queensryche will be one of many excellent bands in a day filled with excellent music.  How can anybody argue with that?

Wow! What an incredible line-up! I really wish Baltimore wasn't so far away. Compared to the Cabaret and Dedicated to Chaos, I think this is an OK move for Queensryche. Who knows--maybe Geoff will listen to Cinderella (one of the most underrated bands ever in my opinion), Stryper (I don't care for their Christian messages, but they are truly unbelievable musicians, and are still amazing live), and Skid Row (their first three albums are masterpieces), and feel inspired to make another metal album!
Title: Re: Baltimore Area Hair Metal Fans Rejoice!

Yeah, pretty much everything Cozmo said.  Queensryche has a decades-long history of playing with a lot of these same bands and others just like them.  There shouldn't be any "stigma" attached.  It's a festival for fans of all those bands that the fans will enjoy.  And I'm sure a lot of those fans who lost their warm and fuzzy feeling for Queensryche long ago will hear songs like Eyes of a Stranger, Silent Lucity, and Jet City Woman and say, "Oh, yeah.  I forgot why I liked this guys.  They've got some pretty good stuff."  Any sane band manager who doesn't take advantage of an opportunity like that is missing out on a good promotion opportunity (something, IMO, Queensryche is desperately in need of given a lot of negative promotion in recent years).

I fully get where fans like Samsara are coming from.  They love what the band once stood for and want to see the band and management be proactive about doing things that will earn the band legitimate respect and restore that proud legacy Queensryche once had as "the thinking man's band."  That's all well and good, and comes from a good place, but as fans, I think we are better served by accepting that that ship has sailed.  This festival shouldn't hurt their image and, IMO, it doesn't.  As long as it isn't hurting their image and it gets them in front of a lot of fans, that's pretty much what they should be doing.

What's pretty amusing to me is that this is a festival that is booking 80s metal bands. And the gut reaction of people to this is "but X band ISN'T a hair metal band!"

Okay, Queensryche isn't.

Here's the thing.

Back in the 80s? So called "thinking man's metal" and hair bands toured together ALL THE DAMN TIME. Queensyrche opened for Def Leppard. They also toured with Guns N Roses and Metallica. Quiet Riot opened for Iron Maiden. Accept toured with Kiss.  White Lion opened for AC/DC and Aerosmith. The notion that subgenres of metal didn't tour together didn't exist back then. Queenryche was just as likely to tour with a hair band as they were with a thrash metal band.

This festival is actually closer to how bands toured together in the 1980s than most people think.

Yeah, again, they've toured, done projects with, and/or played festivals with those kinds of bands since day 1 (Def Leppard, Kiss, Dokken, Bon Jovi, Black N Blue, etc., etc., etc.).  I submit for your consideration, Exhbit A (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7eqxg92YG0).  And if anyone wants to say, "well, but that was the '80s--they shouldn't be doing that now," they took Don Dokken out as their opening act just a few years ago.

Maybe people should look at it this way... instead of it being a predominantly 'hair metal' bill, it's mostly bands who's most popular days are behind them.  Almost all "glam" or "hair" metal bands (who's collective popularity spiked in the late 80s) fit that bill.  So too (unfortunately) does QR.  The good news is that these kinds of bands appeal to a pretty good demographic - 40+ year olds (predominantly male) that have money to spend.

Samsara bringing some fleeting comparison to Rush or DT is ludicrous.  Both of those are still attracting and appealing to a wide audience.

What was even weirder than QR playing M3 was a festival that they were scheduled to play in the Des Moines area.  I forgot the name of the festival, but here were some of the other bands:

Avenged Sevenfold
Stone Sour
Saliva
Three Days Grace
Seether
Bullet for my Valentine.

Unfortunately, QR had some travel issues and couldn't make it in time (although they played a free gig at a local club later that night).

Heading out this afternoon.  Jeff LaBar from Cinderella is receiving treatment for an unspecified medical condition, so Cinderella won't be appearing, but they've added LA Guns and Great White.  It's going to be an excellent show.  I'll be live tweeting throughout (as long as my battery doesn't die).  For anybody who wants to follow along, it's https://www.twitter.com/guitarcozmo.  Oddly, it appears that Ratt IS the headliner.  Bands and set times are as follows:

Johnny Solinger is fronting Skid Row.  Robert Mason, previously of Lynch Mob, is fronting Warrant.  I heard him last year and he sounded amazingly like Jani Lane.  Granted it was live and loud, but still.

Not bad.  To me, the lineup looks more consistent than past years in terms of more quality bands.  But there seem to be fewer bands that make me say "WOW!" on the list this year.

EDIT:  And I think Mason is a very good singer.  He seems to have a pretty adaptable voice, where if he is singing someone else's material, he can sound enough like the other singer to sell it, while still maintaining enough of his own style to maintain his credibility.

When QR played in the UK on the Promised Land tour their support was Lynch Mob so at that time they were happy to be associated with "hair metal" (awful term btw- and not one used in these parts until recently) bands.
George Lynch came out and stood in front of me for the first few songs of QR's set though he can't have been too impressed as he soon left. Or was that because of GT's leather shorts?

So yeah, wow!  What a weekend at M3!  We got into town around 4:30-ish Friday, after sitting in gridlock on the beltway.  Awful.  We arrived to M3 just prior to Enuff Z'Nuff taking the stage.  A band I've gotten more into in the last few years, I'd never had the chance to see them (I didn't start getting heavily into this kinda music til the very late 90's).  I think Donnie Vie is an excellent singer, so I was stoked to start the night off with these guys.  Their set was as follows:

Heaven Or Hell
Kitty
Baby Loves You
We're All Alright
High
There Goes My Heart
Fly High Michelle
Come Together
New Thing

First song, the vocals were a little loud and Donnie was sounding a little rough.  I know he has a slightly different kinda voice that takes some getting used to, but after a song to warm up, he sounded great.  Most of the set was from later albums that I'm not as familiar with yet, but notably, they did a crushing cover of Come Together.  Fly High Michelle was swoon-worthy and they finished up with their best known song, New Thing, a big favorite of mine.  Excellent set, excellent energy, and I'm really glad I got to see them.

Next up was (for me) probably the best set of the entire festival.  Night Ranger.  I've known Night Ranger was a great band, with a lot of fantastic hits.  So I knew to expect some good songs.  However, I was totally unprepared for them to kick so very much ass.  Another band I had never seen live, I never realized that Kelly Keagy sings as much as he does.  These guys had a ton of energy and just sounded absolutely ridiculous.  Their set:

Lay It On Me
Sing Me Away
Rumours In The Air
Growing Up in California
The Secret of My Success
Touch of Madness
Sentimental Street
Eddie's Comin' Out Tonight
High Enough
Four in the Morning
When You Close Your Eyes
Don't Tell Me You Love Me

Encore:
Sister Christian
(You Can Still) Rock in America

Growing up in California is from their 2011 album "Somewhere in California" and is a really rocking tune.  A new anthem for the west-coasters:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPpkk20tF8Y

I really cannot say enough good things about these guys.  I seriously think I'm going to go stock up on some Night Ranger.  Hell of a show.

Next up was Kix.  Kix is kind of a big deal around here, as they originated in Hagerstown, MD.  I’ve done openers for Steve Whiteman’s band, Funny Money and while he may be a bit of a tool, there is absolutely no denying what a fantastic frontman the guy is.  Charisma for days on end.  While the subject matter may come off a little clichéd, they’ve got some good tunes:

Hot Wire
Heartache
The Itch
Same Jane
Cold Shower
Girl Money
Don't Close Your Eyes
No Ring Around Rosie
Lie Like a Rug
Midnite Dynamite
Cold Blood
Blow My Fuse

Encore:
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

We left right at the beginning of Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, to try to beat some of the crowd and to get something to eat, as sobriety had long since gone out the window.  I don’t think I’m going to drink Budweiser anymore.  So night one was a damn strong start.  What a great time!  Nothing like sitting with your woman and your friends, out on the lawn, in the evening, with beer and nachos, seeing some ridiculously cool bands.  Such a happy feeling.

Then Saturday morning came...

Next up was (for me) probably the best set of the entire festival.  Night Ranger.

I am going to have to agree with you here. Of the bands I paid attention to throughout the weekend, they really shined. It was my first time seeing them and I really enjoyed their set.

[My thoughts are of someone who was there, not from the HDNet feed]

The other one that really stood out was LA Guns (whatever version it was). I never listened to them back in the day, so I was coming in with a clean slate and I thought they did a great job. I may have to go out and get something from them. Stryper also put on a strong set, I thought. I enjoyed seeing Lynch Mob again, though that version of "Mr. Scary" was a bit sloppy for my tastes and it really showed what Mick Brown and Jeff Pilson brought to the song. The drummer Saturday was ok, but the bass did not do that song any justice.

Ratt - I enjoyed them. When Eddie Trunk introduced them, he said it was their first performance in a year and their only performance in 2012. And it showed. Warren DiMartini was a bit rusty. But overall, it didn't matter. They put on a fun, high energy set to close the festival. Pearcy was as good as you are going to get out of him, based on how I have seen him perform throughout the past 15 years. And it was cool seeing Juan Crucier back on stage with them, bringing core band back together (minus the late Robin Crosby). So that gave the set a bit of a special feel, despite some musical rust that was clearly apparent.

I have seen a lot of praise for Queensryche's set, but I don't get it. People were saying Tate was as good as he was in the 80s/90s and that is clearly not the case. And with all the rumors about the band swirling around, I was more paying attention to the nuances of the performance. Zero band interaction on stage. Not a single tri-ryche on stage (most noticable on SRock's drums, which were generic Pearl drums and did not have a Queensryche logo on them). Whenever Tate would wander over on Whip's side of the stage, Michael would move to put some distance between them. And there was no final bow. Tate exited stage right after he finished his vocals on "Eyes of a Stranger" and did not come back. Once he was gone, that was the only time Parker and Wilton came together on stage to play off of one another. Once Anarchy-Xtra wrapped up, the four musicians exited stage left. The guys sounded as tight as expected, but there was no engagement by any of them (well, there was some animation by Parker). The vibe was guys being paid to be there, not guys on stage having a killer time and feeling happy to be playing in front of such a large audience.

And then there was this cryptic gem spoken by Tate: "Are you having fun? That's good to know because life is going by very quick. It could all end tonight. This could be it. So God damn, have a good time, hey!"

The writing is on the wall. I would not be surprised at all if Rocklahoma in two weeks is the band's last performance.

Dokken was terrible, as was the non-Jack Russell version of Great White (the singer they have just is not a good fit). I did not check out Loudness, Quiet Riot or Skid Row or Bang Tango and only half listened to Warrent so I can't offer any perspective to those sets.

Was Warren's guitar signal cutting in and out only in the broadcast?  There were bars and bars of his riffs and solos muting then coming back audible throughout their set.  Pearcy seemed to be gassing out as their set proceeded too.

I enjoyed Skid Row's set as well.  They knew the crowd wanted the hits, they delivered.  I can't believe that Bolan still has that Jane Child nose ring/earring thing going today.

Good God, what a wretched morning on Saturday.  Again, Budweiser is now a strict no-no (or at least Budweiser and Jack Daniels).  Some breakfast buffet at the Holiday Inn, and off we went.  We arrived as Let There Be Rock was playing.  Apparently this is some sort of “School of Rock” in Columbia, MD.  We only caught the tail end of their set and I recall hearing Live Wire and Slide It In.  It was really very strange seeing a teenage girl standing on stage in front of a bunch of aging metalheads, singing Slide It In.  Still pretty damn cool to see teenagers playing some good music and playing it pretty damned good.

Next was DrumWars, which had the potential to be cool but was one of the lamest parts of the day.  Carmine and Vinny Appice next to each other, on stage, behind their drumsets.  They did a lot of drumming.  No other people out there playing with them, just drums, as the name implies.  Some back and forth stuff, throwing drumsticks to each other, etc.  Yawn.

Great White came out next.  By this point (as usual) they bands were starting to run behind.  Great White did a REALLY short set.  Terry Ilous of XYZ is fronting this version of the band and though he’s really not too bad, I agree with ShadowWalker, he’s not quite right for this band.  Their set:

Big Goodbye
Lady Red Light
Save Your Love
Rock Me
Once Bitten Twice Shy

Because the main stage had started getting behind, there was a band on stage 2 while Great White was on, Streetlight Circus.  I only checked out a little of their set, but from what I could tell they were a pretty decent band.  According to the singer, they were the only independent band on the bill, having driven from New York, they weren’t getting paid.  I wasn’t losing my shit over them, but they were all right.  Maybe worth my looking into.

Next up was Stryper, who turned out to be one of the other BIG highlights of the show.  Michael Sweet sounded fantastic.  Of note, something I found cool, was that in certain places, Oz Fox would sing parts of songs to give MS a break (the chorus of Calling On You, for example – MS would sing a line, Oz Fox the next line, then MS would finish the chorus).  It’s a good way to keep the singer from tiring out, especially on songs with a demanding vocal like Calling On You.  This is an idea I should run by my band members.  :lol  Michael Sweet is a pretty damn good guitarist, also.  Their set:

Sing-Along Song
Reach Out
Calling On You
Free
To Hell With The Devil
Soldiers Under Command

Sing-Along Song was a fantastic opener.  They’d intended to do one more song, but were told they had to get off, as the 1st stage was running late already.  I’ll assume it would’ve either been Honestly (which, despite being a good song, would’ve been a very bad closer) or Always There For You (which would’ve been awesome).  Either way, I was very pleasantly surprised with how great they sounded.

So by now, they’d pushed XYZ’s start time back on stage 2, so they could start after Stryper finished.  I’m not really at all familiar with XYZ, really.  That said, they sounded great.  Terry Ilous is obviously a better fit for this band.  Set:

C'mon And Love Me
Face Down in the Gutter
What Keeps Me Lovin' You
Souvenirs
Inside Out

Next on the main stage was L.A. Guns.  As SW said, a great set.  I really like L.A. Guns and it would be excellent to see Phil and Tracii get back together again, but I doubt that’ll happen.  For the record, this was the Phil Lewis version.  Dude has such an excellent British accent (fun fact: He used to play in a band called “Girl”, with Def Leppard’s Phil Collen) and still has a great singing voice.  Their set:

Sex Action
Never Enough
You Better Not Love Me
Sweet Mystery
Revolution
Sleazy Come Easy Go
Electric Gypsy
Ballad of Jayne
Rip and Tear

Never Enough is an excellent tune, Ballad of Jayne always goes over, and I realized that the beginning of Rip and Tear sounds a lot like the beginning of Wango Tango.  Whatever, great set.

Was Warren's guitar signal cutting in and out only in the broadcast?  There were bars and bars of his riffs and solos muting then coming back audible throughout their set.  Pearcy seemed to be gassing out as their set proceeded too.

We left a little ways into Ratt's set, as we had an hour and a half drive home.  From what I've been reading, they were indeed having sound issues.

Damn this is going on a little long...

Next on stage 2 was Bang Tango.  Not a band I was ever a fan of, but they still sounded decent.  This was one of the “go walk around, get outta my chair and get something to drink” bands.  Their set:

Suck It Up
Ready To Go
Attack Of Life
Bring On The World
Soul to Soul
Someone Like You

Stage 1 would now host the single biggest disappointment of the entire festival.  Dokken.   I love Dokken.  I have ALWAYS loved Don Dokken’s voice.  That said, it’s time to hang up the mic for good dude.  As someone on Twitter said, “More like DONE Dokken”.  Think “3/4 octave vocal range” and you’re getting a half-decent idea of how pathetic Don sounded.  I will say however, that his band was tight.  Really excellent, and Jon Levin NAILS Lynch’s solos.  The set:

Kiss of Death
The Hunter
Just Got Lucky
Into the Fire
Breaking the Chains
Alone Again
Tooth and Nail
In My Dreams

In the hands of an accomplished singer, this is a DREAM Dokken set.  It absolutely slays from start to finish.  Alas, it was rendered nearly unenjoyable, from my inability to take my focus off of how bad Don was.  So disappointing.

Next on stage 2 was Japanese metal band Loudness.  This is another band I was not really familiar with aside from simply having heard of them.  These guys absolutely BROUGHT IT with ferocity.  Eddie Trunk dubbed Akira Takasaki the “Japanese EVH”.  They were borderline thrash, and good God were they killer.  AT smokes on the guitar and the drummer looked like Genghis Khan.  I do not know why I get the feeling though, that I wouldn’t like them as much on a recording as I did live.  Here’s the set:

Crazy Nights
Crazy Doctor
Let It Go
SE (Requiem) ~ The King Of Pain
Survivor
S.D.I

Next main stage act was Warrant.  Oh wow, Robert Mason is an absolutely amazing vocalist.  He’s got that slightly snotty 80’s lead singer bit DOWN and he’s got the vocals to TOTALLY back it up.  He certainly isn’t Jani Lane, but it almost doesn’t matter.  He’s that good.  They did a good mix of old songs and new songs, the new songs sounding pretty cool.

Down Boys
Innocence Gone
Sometimes She Cries
Life's a Song
D.R.F.S.R.
I Saw Red
Sex Ain't Love
Home
The Last Straw
Heaven
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Cherry Pie

Stage 2, Lynch Mob.  Apparently Don and George were seen talking amicably earlier in the day, then George was seen standing side stage while Dokken played “The Hunter”.  Interesting.  As is the problem with all day festivals, sometimes you have to get up and take a bathroom break, grab some food, etc.  Since the All-Star Jam was coming up next, I chose this time to go get food and such.  I really wish I’d have gone and listened to these guys closer, but each time another bands came to stage 2, it got more and more impenetrable each time.  I could hear them though and they sounded excellent, with George pulling out Mr. Scary.  I agree, it was not quite up to snuff as we’re used to (Mick and Jeff DO add a lot of attitude to that song), but still a good set:

She's So Evil
River of Love
Mr. Scary
Where Do You Sleep at Night?
Sweet Sister Mercy
Wicked Sensation

As mentioned, the All Star Jam was next on stage 1.  I was hoping for a good long jam, but it turned out to only be 3 songs, though they were 3 good ones.  Carmine and Vinny both played drums on all 3 songs.  For the first two songs, there were members of Warrant, Great White, and XYZ on stage to perform Rainbow in the Dark and All Right Now.  Getting to hear Terry Ilous and Robert Mason trade off vocals on All Right Now was a special treat.  VERY cool.  So those guys left as the members of Stryper came out to join Carmine and Vinny on a cover of Heaven and Hell.  The last thing to be seen on the video screens after H&H was a pic of Ronnie James Dio, 1942-2010.  So very cool.  So yeah, for me, entirely too short of a “jam”, but I’ll take it!

Stage 2 – Quiet Riot.  A LONG time favorite of mine, a band responsible for one of my all-time favorite songs to come out of the 80’s – Slick Black Cadillac.  This is essentially the Frankie Banali Band now.    I will say that the singer, Scott Vokoun (Wikipedia refers to him as a “new unknown vocalist”) sounds DAMN good covering DuBrow’s well-known style.  I was at first thinking that I’d just stay in my seat on the lawn and listen (the 2nd stage was behind us).  Then they opened with Run for Cover.  I was out of my chair and dragging Mrs. Cozmo along.  Wow.

Run For Cover
Slick Black Cadillac
Mama Weer All Crazee Now
Sign of the Times
Love's A Bitch
Cum on Feel the Noize
Metal Health (Bang Your Head)

I was kinda surprised at the inclusion of Love’s a Bitch, but it was killer along with the rest of the entire set.  Frankie came to the mic and dedicated Metal Health to Randy Rhoads and Kevin DuBrow.  Very cool.  Would’ve been nice to see such a tribute to Jani Lane in Warrant’s set.

One of the obvious big things of the day was the inclusion of Queensryche on this bill.  They took stage 1 next and played for quite a while.  I saw QR back in 2005.  They did a first set of “Greatest Hits” and a second set, performing ALL of Operation: Mindcrime.  They were damn good.  That’s not the same Queensryche that M3 saw, for sure.  While Tate sounded pretty good, he isn’t the Tate he used to be.  He doesn’t sound “as good as he was in the 80’s/90’s”, though I heard that being said as well.  Look there were obviously plenty of Ryche fans there, that knew probably everything they’ve done, but there were likely plenty that weren’t.  Like me.  They played a number of songs I know, and plenty I didn’t.  I was happy to hear them aging, but I’m pretty sure Tate was the only person who moved the entire set.  The others stood as though they were surrounded by some sort of invisible box.  Michael moved a tiny bit, but he basically moved around in place.  It all seemed a bit odd.  Whatever.  Set:

Get Started
Damaged
I Don't Believe in Love
Hit the Black
I'm American
NM 156
Screaming in Digital
The Lady Wore Black
Walk in the Shadows
Silent Lucidity
Jet City Woman
Empire
Eyes of a Stranger

I will say this:  One of the cooler moments of the night was in Eyes of a Stranger.  It was one of those “let the crowd sing this part” moments.  The lyric “Why am I here, and for how long?” To hear the band stop and hear nothing but an absolutely MONSTER crowd sing the lyric back at full volume was fucking impressive.  We were WAY up the lawn away from the main floor section at the main stage and you could clearly and loudly hear every word the crowd said.  Chilling moment.

Closer on stage 2 was Skid Row, fronted by Johnny Solinger.  I heard a number of people complaining that he didn’t sound good, something that I did not find to be the case.  The whole band sounded fantastic.  This guy will never be Sebastian Bach.  Bach STILL sounds like he just stepped out of 1989 and has taken excellent care of his voice, it seems, but this guy will do also.  The first half of I Remember You was all acoustic.  The band didn’t come in till the solo.

Big Guns
Piece of Me
New Generation
Slave to the Grind
I Remember You
Monkey Business
18 and Life
Youth Gone Wild

And finally, the closer on stage 1, Ratt.  By this time, it was pushing 10 PM (the first band started a little after 11 AM).  We stayed for a handful of songs and decided that since we had a long drive home, we’d head out and beat some of the traffic home.  I was never a huge Ratt fan anyway.  The little we heard sounded decent, but yeah they were a little rusty.  I didn’t realize Carlos Cavazo was in the band now.  Very cool.

Dangerous But Worth The Risk
Scene of the Crime
In Your Direction
Wanted Man
I'm Insane
Lay It Down
Lack Of Communication
Take A Big Bite (snippet)
Way Cool Jr.
You Think You're Tough
Nobody Rides For Free
Body Talk
Back For More

Encore:
You're In Love
Round And Round

So that’s that.  What an excellent weekend.  Night Ranger, Stryper, Quiet Riot, LA Guns, Warrant, and Loudness ALL brought the awesome.  The others fell into a range of “meh”, with Dokken sadly falling at the bottom, entirely because of Don’s inability to sing any of the songs worth a shit anymore.  But that was only one down spot in a weekend of awesome.  Mrs. C., a couple of our friends, and absolutely perfect weather.  It doesn’t get much better.

As noted, the entire thing was broadcast on HDNet.  Bummer you couldn't get it, as the little I've seen of it so far was excellent quality recording.  We DVR'd it.  It took up about 80% of the DVR space.  I'm now trying to record it to DVD.  Unfortunately, our recorder is a little older and doesn't support dual layer discs, so I'm stuck recording 2-hour discs at a time.  :lol

I can also vouch for the fact that they are an excellent live band.  If you only know them from the albums/videos, you probably don't realize what a phenominal singer Oz is or what a phenominal guitar player Michael is.  But, yeah, as you pointed out, most people don't realize that Oz does a lot more lead singing and Michael does a lot more soloing and lead riffing than you would think just from the videos.

That is a really good set.  It's a shame about Don.  But, yeah, I saw them a few years back, and it was obvious Don's voice has taken enough of a beating that it is gone beyond repair.  And the other piece of the puzzle on that issue is that his stuff is deceptively difficult to sing anyway.  It doesn't sound like it should be, but it is.

Oh I know it.  His vocals ARE really tough.  One of the reasons I always loved Dokken, because he had some TOUGH lines and nailed them.  Now, not so much.  I really cannot convey how disappointed I was to see one of my heroes having fallen so far.

I took the liberty of finally bringing my headphones with me today and listened to the studio versions of a couple of their tunes again, specifically Free and Sing-Along Song.  When I first listened to Stryper, I wasn't big into music, didn't play guitar yet, and didn't really have an ear for picking out things.  Listening to them now, it's really cool to pick up things I never "got" before.

The guitar solo from Free has some ridiculous licks in it.  Some cool tapping runs and one lick that sounds really almost harmonic-minor-ish, something I guess I never expected from a band that always seemed to suffer from the "Jesus-rock" label.

Then on Sing-Along Song, the chords imply E minor (E-D-C), but the whole time that E power chord is holding out, the vocal melody is singing notes in E major.  It's like taking a metal-edged chord progression and singing an upbeat major melody over it.  The effect that's achieved is really cool.

EDIT:  I accidentally typed that as "Sin-Along Song".  That would've made for a much more interesting Stryper tune, methinks.  :lol

The vocal melodies are one thing about the band that I simultaneously love and hate.  Their vocal melodies are almost ALWAYS in very upbeat major keys (or at least are arranged in such a way that they sound like they are).  That combined with the way they arrange their 3 and 4 part harmonies makes the vocals always sound very church-choir-ish.  It is a cool effect, but one that sometimes just doesn't feel to me like it matches the feel of the music.

EDIT:  I accidentally typed that as "Sin-Along Song".  That would've made for a much more interesting Stryper tune, methinks.  :lol

:rollin  That is one of the best unintentional typos ever!

Even though I got into these guys in the '80s, I never really appreciated what a good band they were until a few years ago when they released their live CD and I subsequently had the opportunity to actually hear them live.  Such a good live band!  Once you remove all the slick '80s hair band studio production that you get from their albums, I think it is much easier to appreciate them.  Calling On You is a perfect example.  I've been putting it off, but I really need to get this DVD (https://www.amazon.com/Stryper-Greatest-Hits-Live-Puerto/dp/B000MV8ZZ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337276694&sr=8-1).  I've seen a lot of clips on YouTube in the past, and it looks really good.  Good selection of songs as well (Michael really shows off what a beast he is on More Than A Man and The Way, which I would definitely consider more "deep cuts" than hits.

Makes sense, the church-choir-ish sound.  I just get excited to hear ANY band pull off great multi-part harmony, because it's a lot more difficult to do than play an instrument.  Granted, you can make anything sound good in the studio, but they nailed those SAS harmonies live as well.  T'was pretty badass.

Funny, in looking at some of the reviews for that DVD, I saw someone mention Whitecross.  There's a band I haven't heard of in ages.  :lol

Yeah, just haven't gotten around to it all.  Hopefully in the next few days.

He cant.  Kings X rattled his SOUL loose.  He needs some time to recover.

Nice shot. Looked like a beautiful day!

Friday night was DAMN cold.  It was in the 40's and even with jeans on it was cold.  Saturday - perfect, PERFECT weather all day.  It was sunny enough to get sunburned, but not like swelteringly "i can't breathe" hot.

So yeah, I probably won't get everything in today, but I'll get started.  I've pretty much copied all the sets from Setlist.fm.

Had a bitchin' burger at Frank's Diner, then went to the show.  The opening band on Friday night was a band called Bad Seed Rising.  A group of teens ranging from 11-15, they were really quite good:

Not a lot to say, but that they were really cool and hopefully they'll continue to get this kind of exposure.  Also, the drummer's name is "Iron" Aiden.  :metal

Next up is Danger Danger.  Guitarist Rob Marcello is a freakin' monster.  Holy crap.  This is one of the many bands that I know a FEW songs from and really need to explore further.  Also, another band whose singer still sounds surprisingly really good.

Boys Will Be Boys
Monkey Business
No idea
Beat the Bullet
Don't Walk Away
Rock America
Naughty Naughty

Kix came up next and being that they're kinda the hometown  heroes, you know they're going to put on a good show.  Now Fridays at M3 are known as the "M3 Kix-Off Party".  They usually close out Friday night.  Frontman extraordinaire, Steve Whiteman addressed the fans who asked why they weren't closing this year.  Apparently WASP was asked to play earlier and they were like "Um, no."  Which was no big deal, if we have to play for you at 3 in the afternoon, we don't give a shit.

Then why'd you even bring it up, douche?  He just wanted to try to make Blackie Lawless look like an asshole.  Whatever.  All that aside, they do always put on a kick ass show.

Girl Money
Red Lite, Green Lite
Red Hot (Black and Blue)
Sex
The Itch
No Ring Around Rosie
Don't Close Your Eyes
Layin' Rubber
Cold Shower
Cold Blood
Drum Solo
Blow My Fuse
Midnite Dynamite
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

So the night's closer, WASP finally comes on.  By this time, it's low 40's outside and all I had was a thin little jacket.  Froze our asses off.  I was fortunate to later find some fresh hot Starbucks on site.  So anyway, the curtain comes up, there's the big WASP banner, flashing red lights, sirens, helicopter sounds, etc.  Badass.

For like 3-4 minutes.  Not so badass anymore.  Do it for like 45 seconds, a minute tops, then come out and rock.  That said, Blackie is still sporting the fringe-y Ugg boots and the half sawblade wristbands.  He may be 56 years old, but that dude and both the guitarist and bassist were running ALL OVER that stage like a bat out of hell.  He certainly appears to be in some damn good shape.  They played a number of hits, then took a half hour or so to do the Crimson Idol bit.  That was a little blah for me, but I'm not real familiar with their work beyond the hits anyway.  That said, they were amazing.  Absolutely nailed everything.  Killer energy and sound.  I was duly impressed.

On Your Knees / The Torture Never Stops
The Real Me (the Who)
L.O.V.E. Machine
Wild Child
Sleeping (in the Fire) / Forever Free
I Wanna Be Somebody

The Crimson Idol/The Titanic Overture
The Crimson Idol Medley
The Idol
The Great Misconceptions of Me

Drum Solo
Heaven's Hung in Black
Encore:
Blind in Texas

So a pretty damn good night, though we were freezing.  It was nice to hoof it back to the van and get some freakin' heat blowing.

Out for today, got a TON of stuff to do to ready for tonight's gig, so I'll pick up on Monday.

So luckily, our hotel had hot complimentary breakfast.  Score.  Off to the show.

I should mention that this guy here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogEX7OGRCkk&list=PLS3kZYph0cAXGR-M6Ju_kGtctmwdkViA7

Has videos of a LOT of the weekend.  101 videos.  It starts off on Unskinny Bop, but to the right of the video is a scrollable list of the videos he took form the weekend.

First up, on the main stage, a band called Korupt.  Apparently they've been around since the early 80's, though I'd never heard of them til M3.  I know next to nothing about them, but I will say they sounded pretty good.  Bonus - they did a ripping cover of Green Manalishi.  It wasn't Judas Priest, but still damn good.

Next up on the main stage was Love/Hate.  I know "Rock Queen" from an 80's compilation I had and, of course, Blackout in the Red Room.  Another "filler" band to start the day off with, but again, they put on a respectable show.

Why Do You Think They Call It Dope?
Tumbleweed
She's An Angel
Wasted In America
Blackout In The Red Room

Over to the Festival Stage, Streetlight Circus, an independent band form NY went on for another short set.  These guys are fairly well unknown, but they sound great and after 2 years of exposure at M3 are hopefully making a good name for themselves.  To my surprise, they did a cover of Kiss' "Do You Love Me".  Very cool.  Not necessarily an OBSCURE Kiss tune, but DEFINITELY not even in the top 20 I'd think someone would cover.

Back to the main stage for Steelheart, a band I'd been looking forward to seeing for some time.  I have to say, I was disappointed they weren't up later with a longer set.  I'd have loved to hear some of their more well known songs, but no matter, Miljenko Matijevic still slays.  And yes, he can still hit the money notes on I'll Never Let You Go.  Wow.  It's one thing to hear that kind of hair raising vocal on a recording, to hear it live is just flat out  :metal :metal :metal.  Another surprise, they did We All Die Young and Blood Pollution from the Rockstar soundtrack.  Great, albeit too short, set:

Blood Pollution
Gimme Gimme
Like Never Before
Cabernet
We All Die Young
I'll Never Let You Go

So after they finish up, there's a short break in the day to help keep themselves on schedule, while Trixter gets set up on the main stage.  They are one of those bands that had a few great tunes, but came out so late in the game that they never really caught on.  They've put on a great show everytime we've seen them, as they did when I saw them open for Kiss back on the Revenge tour.

Drag Me Down
Road of a Thousand Dreams
Heart of Steel
Machine
Line of Fire
One in a Million
Give it to Me Good

Next on the Festival Stage was Tuff.  Nobody I've heard of outside of M3, though they appear to have been around a long time also.  Nothing that really slayed me, but still in the spirit of the day, it's good stuff.

God Bless This Mess
Good Guys Wear Black
I Hate Kissing You Goodbye
Ruck-a-Pit Bridge
American Hair Band

Of note, the song "American Hair Band" is basically a very odd mish-mash of Sad But True, sung by a Kid Rock wannabe, except that the lyrics have about every 80's metal reference you could think of jammed into it.  Still not sure what to make of it:

So next on the main stage is JSRG, aka Vixen.  Basically Janet, Share, and Roxy from Vixen asked Jan to do a reunion, she said no, so they asked Gina Stile (formerly of Poison Dollys and Envy) to join up and form JSRG.  Obviously the best looking band on the bill:

They put on an excellent show and played some songs I'd totally forgotten about.  They also did a REALLY good, rocking cover of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep".  Wiki says Vixen were dubbed the "female Bon Jovi".  I suppose that's probably an accurate description.  M3 seems to continually remind me how understocked my music library actually is.  Another band I need to pick up some back catalog from.

Rev It Up
How Much Love
Never Say Never
Cryin'
Streets in Paradise
Rolling In The Deep
I Want You to Rock Me
Edge of a Broken Heart
Wrecking Ball

Next up on the Festival Stage was Great White.  Jack Russell's GW, not Mark Kendall's.  A very important distinction for me.  Some would argue that nobody can match Mark Kendall's tone/playing, etc. (infact someone DID mention this to me on Twitter), but for my experience, anybody can play a guitar and get close to a similar sound of a band they like, enough to go on and play the song.  It's almost impossible to sound like the singer and NOBODY sounds like Jack Russell.  For me, Jack Russell IS Great White.  Terry Ilous, from MK's Great White (and from XYZ) is a great singer, but he's not Jack Russell.  6 songs, but all great ones, his voice sounded awesome.  The band, though I have never heard of any of them, were excellent as well.

All Over Now
Desert Moon
Save Your Love
Mista Bone
Rock Me
Once Bitten Twice Shy

Main stage next is Loudness.  Now I skipped over these guys, as much as it pained me, in order to get as close to the Festival Stage as possible for King's X.  I could still hear them from where I was at, but not all that great.  Either way, these guys are outstanding.  I can't say much for them this year, but I did watch them last year and they slayed.  Crazy heavy.  Excellent band.  Wish I could've paid more attention to them this year, as they had a longer set than last year.

Fire of Spirit
The Stronger
Crazy Nights
Crazy Doctor
Heavy Chains
Drum Solo
Requiem ~ King of Pain
Survivor
SDI

So next on the Festival Stage, of course, was King's X.  I've been looking forward to seeing htem for a long time.  Despite this being a very abbreviated set and not featuring some of my favorites, I didn't really care.  I stood and watched the techs come out and set the amp levels and such for everything, line check the instruments and mics and such.  Very cool.  Then King's X walked in through the back entrance of the stage and came out and fiddled with some knobs and checked a few things, etc., then went back stage again, while the techs finished up.  I believe Dug was drinking some sort of Miller-brand beer.  :lol  So they came out and tore shit up, major.  I was close enough that it was only 2-3 people deep in front of me before you got to the barricade, a small alleyway for photogs and VIPs and then the stage.  So while these guys are playing, I can feel the bass form the drums and Dug's bass literally rattling my jaw.  It was freakin' awesome.  About midway through, Loudness comes in the back of the stage and around the side of the stage and hangs out to watch the rest of King's X's set, taking pictures and such.  Really cool to see.  Their set, again:

Groove Machine
Dogman
Vegetable
Everybody Knows a Little Bit of Something
Black Like Sunday
Over My Head
We Were Born to Be Loved

Okay, so the next band on the Main Stage is CLEARLY not for everyone, but they were THE main band I came to see.  Steel Panther.  I thought to myself "This should be interesting, what with people having brought their kids here."

It's rock and roll.  Shield your kids' ears if you don't want them to hear something offensive or don't bring them.  Steel Panther wasn't the first of the day to be offensive, they just take it to an art form.  :lol

Anyway, I just cannot imagine how f*cking awesome it would be to be a part of this band.  Living the parody, in full 80's neon/zebra/spandex regalia.  The lyrics may be dirtier than a sewage treatment plant, but the band is tighter than an emo's pants.  Holy hell can these guys rock.

Now I will say that even though it's part of the schtick, they had a very long crowd interaction part after the second song, where they discussed what girls in the crowd they were going to f*ck, how out of place the lone black guy in the front of the crowd was, and other things, including the band member intros.  It started to drag on and I'm like "Dude, these guys could've played at least two more songs in the amount of time they've been up here talking and busting on each other."  No matter though, because even then, they're still damn funny.

Anyway, they then proceeded to kick major ass all over the place and have only stoked my desire to see them again.  The antics with each other throughout their set just prove what an absolute blast these guys have on stage.  Here's a pretty decent vid of 17 Girls in a Row that starts out with some fun (NSFW-NSFW-NSFW) - the song they're talking about at the beginning is Death to All but Metal:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ3OZ3hu2WM

Did I mention it's NSFW?  Unless you're wearing headphones and don't mind the word f*ck.  Also, it's plainly obvious in his moves and in his voice that Michael Starr was in the Atomic Punks.  He's got DLR nailed to a tee.

I need to catch a full show from these guys, because I KNOW for certain it will be EPIC.  I'd hoped they'd open with Supersonic Sex Machine, but I was not at all disappointed that they opened with Eyes of a Panther.

Eyes of a Panther
Tomorrow Night
Fat Girl (Thar She Blows)
Asian Hooker
Just Like Tiger Woods
Party All Day (Fuck All Night)
Community Property
17 Girls in a Row
Death to All but Metal

At this point, we could've left and I'd have been fine with it.  Next on the Festival Stage was Firehouse.  They really are an excellent band, but they're one of those bands that had the misfortune of being known, almost solely for their two big ballads.  At this point, a chick from the Washington Post comes over, and says she loves the way my hair is blowing and the way the sun (now nearly setting) is shining through it and is it okay if she takes some pictures and hangs out with us for a bit?  Sure, that's cool (it was me, Mrs. C., my singer, his wife, and two other buddies of mine)  Unfortunately, some dude we didn't know, who was drunk as hell had stopped to talk to us, and started kinda jokingly (and drunkenly) hitting on the chick.  She blew him off in short order.  She took several pics (which didn't show up in the article), her phone rang, she excused herself to take the call, then never came back.  I assume she thought the drunk guy was with us.  F*cker.  Anyway, Firehouse is playing all this time and they sound excellent, we're just waiting them out to see Twisted Sister.

Hold Your Fire
All She Wrote
When I Look Into Your Eyes
Overnight Sensation
Love Of A Lifetime
Don't Treat Me Bad

Setlist.fm is down for maintenance, so I'll eat lunch and finish up later...

Title: Re: M3 Rock Festival - Hair Metal Fans Rejoice!
Post by: Sir GuitarCozmo on May 16, 2013, 12:00:30 PM
Okay, so now Twisted Sister is up on the Main Stage.  To start off with, their lead-in music was It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock and Roll).  As the bagpipes are playing the outro, they walk out and launch right into You Can't Stop Rock and Roll.  Dee looks and sounds absolutely amazing.  He may have looked like a complete freak back in the day and was undoubtedly not taken seriously, but dude is legit and they rocked the roof off.  Of note was a fun little point where Dee starts to talk about how in the 90's all these bands started doing Unplugged...

"This is a pretty interesting moment on the show, because it's something that we haven't done before.  Twisted Sister noticed that our peers - the other bands - great bands - all of them have been doing this unplugged thing.  I know what you're saying 'Dee!  Duh!'  I mean it's been going on since the late 90's - all these great metal bands have been unplugging, especially when it comes to their ballad, so Twisted Sister thought that maybe - where is my guitar, bring my guitar out here, would you please?"

Roadie brings Dee an acoustic guitar.  Oddly, there's no guitar strap on it...

"Twisted Sister thought maybe it was high time that we, too joined the other great 80's bands and we unplu-Oh f*ck this...

F*CK UNPLUGGED, F*CK ACOUSTIC GUITARS, F*CK FOLK MUSIC, F*CK THAT!!!"

Smash, smash, smash, smash

"Twisted Sister will unplug our electric guitars when they pry 'em from our cold, dead hands!!  This one is played the way it's supposed to be played, it's called the Price!"

So very rock and roll.  Great set, great energy.  Despite initially not being too hyped up about them, I'm really glad we got to see them.

You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll
Shoot 'Em Down
Stay Hungry
I Believe in Rock 'n' Roll
The Kids are Back
We're Not Gonna Take It
The Price
Burn in Hell
I Wanna Rock

So the closer on the Festival Stage was Jackyl.  Despite the fact that they've played around here numerous times (Just this past weekend, actually), I've never seen them.  They're like AC/DC on steroids.  At this point, you MIGHT have been able to get as close as about 150 ft from the stage.  It was freakin' packed.  They tore through a 7 song set, with JJD noting at some point that he didn't give a shit about schedules and such.

So they close with the Lumberjack song and I'm pretty sure it was getting near or past the point that Bret Michaels was supposed to start.  After 2 minutes of bullshitting with the crowd while the band played the riff, he finally starts the song.

Lights out.

They kept playing like nothing ever happened.  They cut the song short a little, and he still cut a bar stool in half.  When they finished, he says "I never could tell time too good!"  Thanks the crowd, and they leave.  :rollin  I heard conflicting reports that they shut off the lights on them and that a fuse blew.  No way to know, but I doubt a fuse blew and they were unable to fix it the REST of the song.  Pretty sure lights were back up later when they were tearing down the stage.  Anyway, video.  Lights go down around 1:50.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFxivW9n7d0

My Moonshine Kicks Your Cocaine's Ass
Down On Me
I Stand Alone
When Will It Rain
Dirty Little Mind
Redneck Punk
The Lumberjack Song

Then, looking at the stage setup for the Bret Michaels Band, you can see that the set consists, most obviously, of six large decorative panels, each of which displays Bret Michaels' face.

Are you that self-absorbed?  Wow.

We stuck around for Talk Dirty To Me and Look What the Cat Dragged In.  Left when he started doing Sweet Home Alabama.  I've seen Poison, don't want to see them again without the rest of the band.  GONE!

I will say, that he sounded really good.  When he was yelling out to the crowd, he didn't sound at all like Bret.  As soon as he started singing, it was unmistakably Bret Michaels.

Talk Dirty To Me
Look What The Cat Dragged In
Sweet Home Alabama
Your Mama Don't Dance
Go That Far
Something To Believe In
Unskinny Bop
What I Got (Sublime)
Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Fallen Angel

Encore:
Nothin' But A Good Time

So that's that.  What a killer weekend.  We recruited 3 new people to go this time around, who've agreed that they're definitely going again.  It is literally a festival of rack.  No, I didn't mean rock, I meant rack.  The M3 Festival sees more hot chicks than a sorority house toilet seat.  My one buddy was nearly speechless at it all.  A great weeknd of hair metal, our 4th year in a row now.  Looking forward to many, many more.  At some point, they're gonna start scraping hte bottom of the barrel for bands, but I think there are plenty of bands they can still showcase, and they've clearly brought bands back many times, so it wouldn't matter who was on the lineup, I'm still going.

That was my first thought.  If it's the real QR, that's a helluva bill.  If it's Tater-ryche (that's how I always thing that should be pronounced), at least there's time to get a meal and have a dump.

Last weekend of April... gonna be kinda chilly, isn't it?

Still, might be worth a road trip.

It IS gonna be chilly.  They keep moving it up.  Last year, it was in May and I damn near froze my ass off the first night.

Bigger problem.  We're getting married in Antigua on April 19th.  We'll be arriving back home on the 22nd.  3 days before the festival.  We're gonna be pretty low on cash and tired.

Honestly, I don't really even remember.  I'm thinking 50-ish a person for lawn seats.  Somewhere around there.  But consider, that's 1 stage Friday night, and 2 separate stages alternating all day Saturday.

We got married on April 19th too, but in Bermuda.

I'm not entirely certain.  I feel like that was the whole thing.  Again, that's for lawn seats, so you're really not going to be even remotely close to the main stage (they have video screens), but you CAN get fairly close to the festival stage.

Our buddy Mark went with us last year, after opting out all the other years.  Finally got him to come along.  When he realized what a "festival of rack" it was (in his own eloquent words), the music in the background was just icing on the cake.  He was like "I'm never missing this ever again".  :lol

Uh huh... and he's been doing it for 14 months now.  I so wish I was there, and seriously tried to figure out how I could get down.  Alas, 3 straight weeks of work travel (now 4 with a couple days away coming up this week unexpectedly) aren't helping my cause.  I could hardly come home at 10 on Thursday night, then say "Bye, I'm off to a music festival in PA" first thing Friday morning.

Next year perhaps... it better be as good a lineup.

Looking forward to your update Coz!

Can't wait for the review/summary next week.

The 7th annual M3 Rock Festival is back, May 1-2.  The lineup is as follows:

(https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/10922630_10203440141947649_2363037329003358446_n.jpg?oh=459dd8851f49f1a5ffe5f05e5cd8a4fd&oe=552B284D)

Some interesting acts, for certain, but a number of acts I'm stoked to see.

Festivals can be SO hit and miss, even if the genre is one that I like a lot of bands from.  But this is pretty good.  If I were going, there are 3 bands I would like to see on day 1 and 6 on day 2.  Interesting that there doesn't seem to be a true "heavy hitter" in the lineup though.  The headliners each day don't really overwhelm me.
Title: Re: M3 Rock Festival - Hair Metal Fans Rejoice! (2015 Lineup!)
Post by: Sir GuitarCozmo on January 05, 2015, 11:27:00 AM
Well, Friday is always Kix headlining.  They call it the M3 Kix-Off party.  Except last year (I think?) when WASP headlined.  Apparently WASP refused to play second fiddle to Kix and would only play if they headlined Friday night (from what I heard, anyway).  Europe I scratch my head about a little, but that's okay.  Still a good lineup.

Regarding Dio Disciples, from their FB page:

Quote
Dio Disciples features Ronnie James Dio's Band Mates and Friends and is comprised of singers Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen) and Oni Logan (Lynch Mob), guitarist Craig Goldy (Dio), bassist Bjorn Englen (Yngwie Malmsteen), keyboardist Scott Warren (Dio, Heaven & Hell), and drummer Simon Wright (Dio, AC/DC, UFO).

Every year has a handful of bands that I'm really grateful for the chance to see.  Getting to see EzN and Night Ranger back to back in 2012 was a real treat.  I'm really, really hoping tht SOMEHOW, Don Dokken has rehabbed his voice and sings the songs instead of making the crowd sing them.
Title: Re: M3 Rock Festival - Hair Metal Fans Rejoice! (2015 Lineup!)
Post by: bosk1 on January 05, 2015, 11:37:00 AM
I hadn't realized that about Kix.  Fair enough reason for them to headline on Friday then.  I hear you about Don.  And I doubt he will be much better.  You gotta just go in with low expectations, I guess.  I listed them as one of the bands I would like to see, but I know full well that the performance is likely to suck.  :dunno:

Day 2 is interesting.  I can make an argument for why a couple of those bands could be the headliner over Europe, but I can't really make a strong argument that they really have to be.  If Jani were still alive, I think there would be a good argument for Warrant.  But when a band's signature front man has moved on, I have a hard time arguing for them.  As much as I love Y&T, they simply weren't as popular.  If Tom were playing with Cinderella, I think they would be a slam dunk.  But Tom solo?  No.  Krokus?  L.A. Guns?  See Y&T reasoning.  Queensryche is really the only band I can make a decent argument for.

Post by: Sir GuitarCozmo on January 05, 2015, 11:43:36 AM
I can't argue with any of that, really.  Our first year going (2010), Cinderella was next to last.  They completely stole the show.  So freakin' good.  Scorpions headlined that year, but Klaus was sick and could barely sing.  Not to mention, they played a lot of songs that your average Scorpions radio-listener likely wouldn't be familiar with.  Warrant has been excellent every time, and as noted, Mason is an excellent singer.  LA Guns - brings it every time.  I'm stoked I finally get to see Y&T.

I hope Y&T brings it.  I haven't seen them in years now, so I have no idea how they are.  I know that despite taking great care of his voice, it seemed like age was finally catching up with Dave in recent years.  But not sure.  I think you are at least likely to get a "very good" performance, if not better than that.

That is Dave's signature guitar.  He has had it for ages and can tell stories about it forever.  It is, essentially, his "Lucille."  He incorporated it into the logo for his solo project back when that was going:  https://www.google.com/search?q=meniketti+logo&biw=1067&bih=745&tbm=isch&imgil=hRtbO03DYzfx1M%253A%253BWP_JNYvDKegy4M%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.rockcinema.eu%25252F488.html&source=iu&pf=m&fir=hRtbO03DYzfx1M%253A%252CWP_JNYvDKegy4M%252C_&usg=__5g4p_jsV-H554u0UvwkZXwsju6o%3D&ved=0CDEQyjc&ei=2eKqVPizMoGkNor-gagL#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=hRtbO03DYzfx1M%253A%3BWP_JNYvDKegy4M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.rockcinema.eu%252Fresources%252FMeniketti_logo01.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.rockcinema.eu%252F488.html%3B400%3B171

It does look a bit weird having Kix above the names Dokken and Quiet Riot but given the state of the various bands I can understand why (even before any tradition involved).

I would definitely have Europe headlining the second day based on that lineup.  Again - given that Queensryche is in transition and re-establishing themselves (and were probably no bigger in their heyday anyway) - I can't see any bands there that should be above Europe in the pecking order.

Personally I'm a big Europe fan but haven't enjoyed anything much since Norum's return and their move to a more downtuned/70's sound.  These days I'd be most interested in seeing Queensryche, Y&T, Tyketto and Killer Dwarfs from that lineup.   In their heyday Europe,Dokken and Warrant (and less so Quiet Riot/LA Guns and Krokus) would be a big draw for me but not so much now.

The new singer, Johnny Monaco, actually kinda sounds a good bit like Donnie Vie, which is pretty amazing, since Donnie has a VERY unique voice.  He's also apparently a pretty good guitarist, as he's the ONLY guitarist in the band now.  They're currently a 3-piece.

Oh, holy crap.  Christmas came early.  I found a bootleg video of Paul Gilbert and Donnie Vie doing a completely impromptu jam on some classic rock tunes with Dean Truitt and an unnamed drummer.  It's a crowd shot recording and not everybody knows all of the songs (the drummer on "A Day in the Life", for example), but dammit is it ever cool.

That's a band I couldn't get into because of the singer.  I just didn't like his voice.

If you are talking about Deen, I can completely understand that.  Even though it is understandable for them to have been a Cinderella clone given that they were more than half of the original founding members of the original Cinderella, the fact that the guy they hired as their lead singer not only sang in the same style as Keifer, but also looked like him and played a Les Paul didn't help their cause any.  Not to mention that Deen just flat out wasn't as good as Keifer.  But when they parted ways with him and brought Tommy in, I felt like they really stepped up quite a few notches.  He is just a better singer and better front man in general.  But he also has his own identity rather than looking and sounding like a bargain basement knockoff of another band's front man.

This Friday and Saturday!  This year, no festival stage.  They have a rotating stage that ALL the bands will be on.  Something about not being able to get the festival stage finished, with all the other renovations that Meriweather Post Pavilion was doing and weather.  From what I gather, they'll be back to two stages next year.  They damn sure better, that was a lot of the fun of it for so many people!  Anyway, bands and set times:

Is it normal for the earlier bands to only have 30 minutes like Y&T does, or is that a factor of them only having the one stage this year?

It's normal, because even if they had two stages, they still have to have time for all those bands to be able to play without playing over top of each other.  Y&T got lucky with a later spot last year and did 6:40-7:25.  Last year's setlist:

Don't Stop Runnin'
Black Tiger
I Want Your Money
Mean Streak
I Believe in You
Contagious
Summertime Girls
Rescue Me
Forever

Stoked.  Except for the fact that Loudness got turned away trying to come into the country and had to cancel shows, including M3.  Dammit.

For my own tastes, this year's lineup seems weaker than past years.  If it were an annual thing for me, I might be tempted to skip day 1 and show up midway through day 2.

Honestly, I'm actually looking forward to seeing Loverboy.  I think they'll do a good set.  Also, Station, who I mentioned in the Hard Rock thread.  Plus there's the annual Epic Tailgate Party in the parking lot (directly underneath the "NO TAILGATING" sign), prior to Friday's show starting.  There should be a good couple hundred people there from the M3 group I'm a member of on FB.  Philly 80's cover band Old School plays the tailgate party, which is an added bonus.

Sounds like fun.  I dunno.  Maybe I'm just turning into Old Grumpy Man when it comes to shows, but it seems like there are fewer and fewer these days where the lineups get me truly excited.  The one notable exception in recent history is the one posted in the Epica thread.  But, unfortunately, the date/location combo makes that EXTREMELY inconvenient.

For the record, going to this festival is as much about getting the hell away from life for a couple days, sitting around in the open air, people watching, and having a good time.  A couple years ago, we finally convinced my one buddy to come along.  Within an hour, he had dubbed the event "A Festival of Rack" and questioned why he'd been so hesitant to go all these years.

Anyway, TAC, I know you follow a lot heavier 80's music, but I have yet to go to an M3 festival where I wasn't absolutely glad that I went.  The bands always sound good and the only one I was ever REALLY close to disappointed with was the Queensryche appearance from shortly before they kicked Tate out.  There were plenty of bands I wouldn't have expected to sounds so damned good that really killed it.

It's all cool. I'm just goofin'. Seems like a totally cool thing, for sure.  Like a college spring weekend. And I'm sure all of the bands are accessible too.

Anyway, I'm sure of they wanted a heavier lineup, they could've asked Duran Duran to play.

"Festival of Rack" sounds very impressive.

He was absolutely correct.  It IS a festival of rack.  Once he realized that the place was literally SWARMING with all kinds of women from their 20's to their 50's, STILL convincingly rocking 80's looks, he hasn't missed a year since.

Anyway, I'm sure of they wanted a heavier lineup, they could've asked Duran Duran to play.

:lol

But yeah, it's a hell of a lot of fun.  M3 gave me the opportunity to hear Joe Lynn Turner sing Stone Cold live.  That was a pretty big deal.  I got turned on to ZO2 at M3.  I got to see one of Donnie Vie's last performances with EzN.  I finally got to see King's X and Steel Panther there.  And, I had arguably my worst hangover there, after a night of Jack Daniels and Budweiser.

A 20 year-old young woman who is EXTREMELY feminist-minded is not going to think highly of a form of music whose lyrics paint her as not much more than a piece of meat is not going to think it is fun.  And she would just laugh at the way they dress and carry themselves.

Nothing wrong with it, but let's just say that she is definitely not their target audience.

Jack Russell still kicks ass.  Don Dokken still does not.  Station was excellent, despite not getting very long to play and the morons at MPP opening the gates at 3:30, the same time Station started.

And apparently everybody hates Faster Pussycat.  *shrugs*

I always liked that one song House of Pain.  It got a lot of radio play.

But every time I tried to dig deeper into their stuff, it sounded really derivative and "just like all these other bands".  And not in a good way, to my ears.

Again, I get it, I do.  I guess being another vocal defender of the genre on a prog forum, I get a little too touchy about it sometimes.

Anyway, my shoulders are burnt, despite all the hair, the top of my head is burnt, I'm still pretty tired (we had band practice yesterday, after two days of M3), and I think I'm finally half recovering from a 3-4 day hangover, but I'd do it all again.

Intoxicated and singing along with my wife to Great White's "Save Your Love" - moments like that are why I will always keep coming back to M3.

I like the genre as well, although more in a nostalgic, "remember those times" way.

We had to go to a baby shower yesterday (drive 2 and half hours, stay for 45 minutes, drive 2 and a half hours back - yay!), and we actually listened to the Hair Metal station on Sirius XM for a large portion of it.

Not familiar with that band.

Any sign of Roxy Blue?

Station is a band from NYC that got on the bill this year, likely thanks to the fact that a ton of their fans GO to M3 and petitioned for them to be there.  Here's their Youtube page:

https://www.youtube.com/user/StationNYC/videos

There are 6 “official music videos” from the album.

Alas, no sign of Roxy Blue.  I think the guitarist is a dentist nowadays.

I have a 7 hour playlist of 80's songs I'll be playing driving to RoSfest.  Plenty of Hair metal on that playlist.

One of my favorite bands from that time period was Tattoo Rodeo, but no one else knows them.  I also liked Junkyard quite a bit, and the Four Horsemen.

Junkyard was there this year, but not one of the bands I went out of my way to check out.

Nice to see some of these old names.   Was never a fan of Faster Pussycat.  Like some of the stuff from Station.     I have some Marchello but only ever really played one song (All Gods Angels?........memory)

I love The Four Horsemen's "Rockin Is Ma Business"

Never liked Tattoo Rodeo but was into the earlier incarnation of the band (White Sister).  Shame about their production.

... and business is good.

That's a pretty decent album, but I don't know anything else by them.

One day, I'll crash the Coz and Mrs Coz show at M3.

Been waiting almost 30 years to see Vixen. Hopefully they will do a gig I can get to at some point soon.

They sounded great.  Their setlist Link (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/vixen/2017/merriweather-post-pavilion-columbia-md-6be60202.html)

Perfect Strangers was a minute or two snippet, led in from I Want you to Rock Me.  Extremely cool.

As mentioned earlier, Share sang House of Pain for FP's set, and she sounded great!
