Title: interesting lastfm DT statistic
Post by: chrisbDTM on February 07, 2010, 03:45:34 PM
i was just checking out dream theater on lastfm and during the last week Pull Me Under has been played about 3,314 times and in the number 2 spot is Another Day at 2,509.

of course this is only lastfm users but i wouldnt have thought that PMU is still their highest listened to song. by like 800 plays

and in the last 6 months
PMU: 33,230
Another Day: 26,416

I wonder why it cuts off so suddenly at 800 votes.

but I heard Kevin Moore doesn't like writing lyrics, but he had a pen and paper, so what the fuck?

I apologize for this break in Kevin Moore to bring you this on topic reply...

The statistics may be skewed by a users listening style and last.fm's method of recording a "listen".

If someone puts on I&W to listen to the album, PMU is the first song.  Some listeners will break it off after that song, but they usually continue (or forget to stop it after that song), so it goes to Another Day.  Part way through Another Day they realize this and change songs.  But at that point last.fm already tallied the listen.

You may now continue your Kevin Moore spam-a-thon because it appearently never gets old  ::)

*just kidding don't ban me*

In all seriousness, that is quite the interesting statistic actually. To be quite honest, I'm more surprised about Another Day.

Well, now that I officially participated in a Kevin Moore spam-athon, I can answer you.

Another reason is that people who don't know DT are usually introduced to them by Pull Me Under, so I guess last.fm uses the song, as well as Another Day, to get people to know DT. My personal Opinion.

I don't see what the big deal is. Most of Images and Words is on the top 15, and Another Day was also on the Greatest Hit compilation. Its not some super unknown song.

You, sir, are correct. This matches up with various other LastFM user's stories, and it's happened to me a few times. Although I normally listen to all of I&W. And Kevin Moore haha.

Post by: icarus4321 on February 08, 2010, 04:09:29 PM
I actually think that this is because Images and Words is available and plays quite often when you actually listen to the last.fm radio station.  At least for me, the radio would play a disproportionate amount of I&W, and I believe that some of the albums are not available unless you directly scrobble them.

okay so I'm gonna go with this
Most of Images and Words is on the top 15, and Another Day was also on the Greatest Hit compilation
+ this
If someone puts on I&W to listen to the album, PMU is the first song.  Some listeners will break it off after that song, but they usually continue (or forget to stop it after that song), so it goes to Another Day.  Part way through Another Day they realize this and change songs.  But at that point last.fm already tallied the listen.

Anyway... last.fm's charts are really deceiving because they go by tracks played and don't take into account song length. I've listened to DT way longer than most other bands, but they aren't ranked at the top because most bands have three minute songs and you can get through them quicker.
Title: Re: interesting lastfm DT statistic
Post by: Darkes7 on February 20, 2010, 09:07:42 AM
Just wanted to point out that it's a pretty common mistake the author made in the OP - the band charts on last.fm show the number of people who listened to the song, not the amount of listens. Doesn't matter if it's one or 100 listens, one person counts as one (it makes sense I guess, otherwise imagine what would happen if someone put a song on repeat for an entire week...).
