Title: How did you get into DT?
Post by: RobertD on May 17, 2009, 08:10:33 PM
Thought I'd start a topic.May have been done already.
How did everyone get into DT.Myself I discovered them by seeing JP at G3,and after a little research found out he had a band.In my opinion JP is the best guitarist on the scene today. Not only because of his technical proficeincy but also because of the raw emotion he applies to his phrases.

To be blatantly honest, The Glass Prison was the only intense heavy metal song on my friends MP3 player that didn't have swear words in it.

And since then my 8 year old brain has just never been the same.

I feel bad that I didn't hear about them sooner, but basically I watched them play Instrumedely. Then suddenly Rudess did that ragtime thing, that was all it took.

my dad was a fan.  I didn't like them at first, then I became a drummer, and started appreciating music more instead of just liking pop.  Now I hate pop, and dt is one of the only bands I listen to anymore.  Nothing else can compare.

My brother showed me TGP back when it was released. Thought it was badass, and I would kinda long to listen to the song again. The rest of SDOIT just didn't click with me at that age though.

Then, I bought Systematic Chaos in November, just to kinda recheck them out since I started listening to Symphony X. Listened to it half asleep on a car ride and woke up in love  :D

I was having a band practice with my friend last summer. We all liked Rush, so my guitarist recommended this band called Dream Theater. I had heard of them before because another friend showed me a live version of Glass Prison, however, JLB's voice completely turned me off (and that performance STILL sucks... bad way to learn about DT). Anyway, I trusted this friend's musical tastes, so I agreed to listen to it. When I was driving him back home, he popped in Scenes from a Memory. I was in love. Been an avid fan since then and haven't looked back.

I was drivin around with my drummer, and Solitary Shell came on. I was interested, but didn't pursue. Then a guitarist friend of ours started putting Octavarium on all the time the winter after it's release. I decided to go to a live show, and have been hooked since.

If I had a nickel for every thread like this started at this forum ever.....

Anyway, here's the deal.  Back in August 2005, I invited a friend of mine to my house to chill out, and so I could steal some of his music (at that point, about 80% of the music I listened to was by an artist he'd recommended).

Of three burned CDs he brought for me to rip, one was Train of Thought and the other was Awake.  That day, he tried to turn me on to Train of Thought by way of This Dying Soul.  The intro bored me to death because it seemed like a lot of noise for not much depth, and then seeing that there was still 10 minutes left to the song I decided no way.  However, I let him rip it anyway because he said I'd change my mind eventually.

So I kept Train of Thought on my computer and put my iTunes into shuffle mode while I played my favorite multiplayer FPS of the time (still is), Half-Life 2 Deathmatch.  During one of my matches, In the Name of God came up, and I decided I didn't wanna have to exit the game, skip the track, and then get back into the game.  I listened for a while and it got to the techno-sounds on JR's keyboard (just before "Justifying violence/Citing from the holy book"); now I thought that was fucking cool.  I decided to keep listening, and I fell in love with ItNoG.  I then discovered and loved SoC and Vacant, though the other tracks did take a while with me.

On a mad dash for more, I came back to the copy of Awake he burned me.  I popped it into, loved the first four tracks, and the rest is history. :hat

1. One day I came across the name "Dream Theater" on the internet.  I thought it was a cool band name, but nothing more.

2. Several months later, I was somehow reminded that I had had a mild interest in at least checking out this band, solely because of the name.  I read a little about them and liked the descriptions of their music that I found, despite being a musical retard.  Still, I was very skeptical and had low expectations, because most music is shitty.

3. I downloaded several of their songs that I thought had cool names (man, I just realized that I used this lame criteria to determine everything I did when discovering DT), like In the Presence of Enemies, Stream of Consciousness, and Metropolis.  I was pretty much blown away, and gradually listened to all of their stuff and bought it.

4. The end.

After years of barely going deep into the metal genre (the extent of my metal was metallica and megadeth) my friend started recommending me stuff from different genres. Cool stuff here and there but nothing that blew me away.

One random summer night 3 years ago he decides to send me a Dream Theater song, Fatal Tragedy. I listened to it and it was just everything I had ever wanted in a song... Most bands take me awhile to attach to, but this just clicked instantly. The rest is history.

My ex-girlfriend's friend had them playing in his car on the way to bowling.  I heard Portnoy's drums and was like, "Dude who is this!?"  He told me Dream Theater.  I got Images and Words and Train of Thought, loved them both.  That was 2004.

It pisses me off that I can't remember the song that was playing in the car.

:lol  That's a good question, and I have no idea dude.  I think actually I had heard of this guy John Petrucci being cited as "best guitarist ever" by some people, and when I was reading about him, I saw the band's name.  It's all kinda fuzzy, this was like a year ago.

Back around senior year of high school/early freshman year of college, I was seeing two bands referenced seemingly everywhere I went online. One was DT, the other was Iced Earth. Deciding I may as well give it a try, I picked up A Change of Seasons on a whim shortly before Christmas break of freshman year, and my mind was blown. I instantly collected every other CD I could.

As for Iced Earth, I forgot about them until a few years later when I decided to see if lightning could strike twice, and I turned it off after two songs. I often wonder if I'd ever have given DT a try if I went with Iced Earth first.

*Edit* Technically, I heard them in sophomore year of high school when I watched my brother's History of Trunks DBZ DVD, and thought to myself "Maybe I should check this Dream Theater band out. . ." I then promptly forgot about them, but still recognized the songs when I bought SFAM years later.

I remember it like it was yesterday, I was in the car going up to Maine for thanksgiving. My brother had me listen to The Glass prison, I loved it. At the time the rest of 6doit didn't click for me, so I kinda forgot about them for a while.....until I heard train of thought and I was sold.

A friend of mine was a huge fan. I never paid attention but did download some songs: and listened to them in my mini disc: which I'm looking for the songs I had in there... (I'm listening to that mini disc... and you have no idea how COOL the transition from "Fuck Her Gently" by Tenacious D to "Love Song" by Tesla is. It's perfect!).

OK, so, I had "Fatal Tragedy", "Home" and "Pull Me Under". I listened to this disc ALL the time.
One summer this friend of mine lent me some of his CDs and in there there was Metropolis Pt: 2. I popped it in, lying on a bed (:tard). I closed my eyes and my life changed. The album even told me to OPEN MY EYES. Best musical experience I've ever had in my life. I then listened to LSFNY, bought the DVD at Blockbuster (which was really odd to find it there). The rest is history.

I heard mp3s of 6:00 and Caught In A Web when I was taking my European Computer Driving License back in late 2000 - they were among the other mp3s in the shared folder on that student network. I liked what I heard and bought IaW and Awake. Listened a couple of times to both, I liked IaW a lot but never really got into Awake - more than the first songs. I put them back on the shelf for a few years.

Fast forward to spring 2007 when I heard some songs from Octavarium, got really interested again, started to listen to IaW again - loved it! - and the rest is history. I have been kind of obsessed by DT since then. I've been catching up on their entire catalogue over these two years.

I have to give some credit to the Metallica message board circa 2003! Actually, before then I had read reviews of DT on some metal websites but was worried they weren't going to be "heavy" enough for me (since I was an '80s thrash fan) but my tastes have broadened since then. Anyway, this guy on the Metallica board kept name-dropping Petrucci in the Hammett threads so FINALLY I took the plunge. Since Images and Words seemed to be their highest-rated album I started with that one. I'm glad I did so I didn't need to try to get into the band's catalog in reverse order. Anyway, it took a few listens for I & W to click, but when it did I realized DT was everything I had been lookng for in music.

Its a bit of a buzz kill but here we go.  Back in 06, a friend of one of my very good friends committed suicide.  He was a huge Dream Theater fan and actually got to go to RCMH earlier that year and see the performance on Score.  Anyways, after he passed away my buddies made a tribute video for him with The Spirit Carries On as the audio.  I thought it was beautiful and the solo blew me away.  So I saw them live, bought every album, and here i am now with the Majesty logo on my arm and Honor Thy Father lyrics on my chest.  Sorry for the story if anyone is bothered by it.

King, were you at those early Axis shows?

For me, I went to see Iron Maiden at the Ritz on 6/8/92. We got there early to get a good spot, which meant having to endure the opening band.
But then this group called Dream Theater hit the stage, and my musical life was changed forever!
My first 2 thoughts:
1. The drummer is awesome
2. The bass player is a madman

I was an old-school prog fan (Yes, Gabriel-era Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc.) and from that was a huge Tony Levin fan.  I went to see him play with some oddly-named band, Liquid Tension Experiment (1st LTE show ever, btw).

After the concert was over, I picked my jaw up off the floor and walked over to Tower Records and bought I&W, Awake, and FII.  Listened to them all that night, and I've been a huge fan ever since.

It was 2004 and my desktop computer kept shutting off. Then it started not turning on at all, so I got on my laptop and searched google for "hardware forum" to see if I could get some advice.

I found Hardware Analysis, started posting there, got to know someone there who helped me switch out my motherboard on my laptop and then stayed friends with him.

We talked about music at one point and he told me his favorite band of all time was Dream Theater. I hadn't heard of them, so he sent me About to Crash, Solitary Shell, Misunderstood, Endless Sacrifice, and Wait for Sleep.

I freaked out and have been hooked ever since. Immediately ordered their back catalogue of studio albums (except WDADU) from Columbia House ("12 CDs for the price of one" deal).

When he stopped messaging me a couple of months later, I opened MSN one day to see if he was even online and saw that his title said "https://www.dreamtheater.net/bb/" so I went there to see if he was around, started reading, signed up, and never turned back. That was May 24, 2004. Just about five years now.

Then nothing happened for a few years..no internet..really I didn't track them....walking through a record store one day and there was I&W sitting there on the new release shelf...

I wish I had some cool story, but the truth is last September, I had just got Rock Band 2 for my 17th birthday. I already had Rock Band 1 and had downloaded Constant Motion (simply because it sounded hard to play on Expert guitar). I honestly thought the song sucked, but my friend kept asking me to play it because he liked to see me play (or should I say butcher?) the solo. He hated the song itself though (he was just starting to like metal).

Anyways, then I saw that this band had a song in RB2, so I started thinking to myself, "oh no here we go again," so I started to play Panic Attack. I actually kind of liked it. Even though I wasn't sold yet, I thought, "I have to look up these musicians, they play like crazy. I wonder if they can play live." I looked "Dream Theater Live" up on YouTube, and it was the Score (2nd disc) version of Another Day. I was blown away, but I thought I looked up the wrong band, because Another Day sounded nothing like Constant Motion.

Fast forward about two months, and I hadn't really researched them anymore. My friend was over and asked me to play Constant Motion again. I said, "Fine, but I swear I'm never playing this song again after this." I played it, and something clicked this time. I really was enjoying the song. I looked up Dream Theater again, looked up some of their other stuff and noticed that they had a song on Guitar Hero World Tour (I had it but hadn't unlocked the song yet). I played through the game and finally got to "Pull Me Under."

My life changed after I heard that song. I immediately ran out and chanced it: I bought all of their albums from Images and Words to Systematic Chaos (they were cheap at my local cd store). I sat down and spent a whole day just listening to the albums.

Fast forward another few months, and here I am, with all of their albums, dvds, and most of their Ytsejam releases. Whew, sorry I went on so long. But yeah, I have to thank Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero World Tour for getting me into Dream Theater.

I think I stumbled across the name Dream Theater on an Iron Maiden message forum. I bought Images & Words since it seemed to be everybody's favorite album...and only listened through Pull Me Under before getting bored. (Yeah, I was one of those who thought that my CD was broken. :lol ) I came back to the CD months later and found out that it was everything I've ever looked for in music and haven't looked back since.

No shame in that, dude.  Welcome!   :tup

I don't know if I would have been open-minded enough to investigate DT further if I had only heard Constant Motion and Panic Attack (or even Pull Me Under), so props to you for giving the rest of their stuff a shot even though those two songs didn't grab you.

I actually don't quite remember... Although I think it started with power metal. Two or three years ago, I knew this cool power metal obsessed dude from the Netherlands who sent me four songs (I still remember them... Forever by Kamelot, Emerald Sword by Rhapsody, Guardian by Black Majesty, and The Road Goes Ever On by Wuthering Heights).

Power metal, for a short while, became my favorite genre, and Kamelot soon became my favorite band, and soon got into the more progressive side of them. Again I don't remember exactly how this came to Dream Theater, but I believe it was as simple as seeing their name in the list of "If you like this band you may also like..." on a review site (or perhaps Kamelot led to Symphony X, and a review for Symphony X led to that).

Anyways, I downloaded The Glass Prison and The Spirit Carries On and there was no turning back... now I own all their albums and they're my second favorite band :metal

As for Iced Earth, I forgot about them until a few years later when I decided to see if lightning could strike twice, and I turned it off after two songs. I often wonder if I'd ever have given DT a try if I went with Iced Earth first.

What did you do, listen to the first album? Did the vocals start off as, "WHUT DO I SEEEEEYUUUUUUUUHHHH"?

Anyway, I think I first heard of Dream Theater on an unofficial Offspring message board. opinions were mixed, but ultimately they seemed to be a boring band, and the singer sounds like a girl. Who want's to listen to that? Well, then while discovering Symphony X, I read a review on amazon stating that the beginning of Through The Looking Glass takes the beginning from Surrounded, atleast the keyboards. So I downloaded both songs, and lo and behold, they had the same intro.. kinda. Well, I kept Surrounded, put it on some mix CDs, but that was it for Dream Theater. I moved on to Symphony X and Kamelot.

A few months later at a CD store, I stumbled across the DT section, and picked up Live At Budokan. I asked the owner if he has heard of them, and he told me they're like a heavier Rush. At the time I didn't like Rush, but I did get Rush vibes from Surrounded (not anymore) so I bought the CD. It wasn't long before I traded it in unfortunately because I just couldn't get into the songs. I do remember liking The Test That Stumped Them All... But not enough. I also remember looking at the track lengths and thinking, "holy shit".

So I was really liking Surrounded by this point, and Dream Theater just had to have more songs I could like, so I downloaded their entire discography, (after reading more reviews of other albums) and I believe I started with Images And Words. I even remember the torrent file I downloaded. The file said Pull Me Under is corrupt or something to that affect. Well, it did sound like the file got cut off, so I simply faded the end out. Images And Words became a constant play, and I soon went on to check out the other albums.

I've since bought all of their studio albums, and all but the Chaos In Motion DVD. Maybe if I find it for like $2 I'll get it...

Dream Theater is my favorite band and far from boring.

I got hooked when I saw Pull me under on Headbangers Ball in 1992. At that point the music climate was terrible so to hear that fantastic song among the crap on HB made me buy the album the next day. Since then DT has been nr 1 and I´ve been buying all albums on releasedate and seen all tours from Awake and forward. Don´t see how any band could ever take over that nr 1 spot with me.

Honestly, I don't know.  I was 14 years old when Train Of Thought came out, a freshman in high school, and rarely bought CDs, ever. I don't know how I even heard of the name Dream Theater nor why I bought that album.  I suppose it was fate.

The rest is history.  I listened to Train Of Thought for about two years and not discovering any of their other material.  I was under the impression they were just a progressive heavy metal band.  I proceeded to get Octavarium and then explored the rest of their discography.  Upon this journey, I've discovered some of the best music ever.  :)

I was at the mall and I had some extra money, walked into the CD store and Systematic Chaos was the only album that was by a band I knew was good/had heard some things about that I had enough for.

I had just transferred to a new school and knew nobody. I over heard some people in my electronics class talking about how exceited they were to be seeing DT that night. I remember thinking to myself "how good can they really be if I have never heard of them". I went home after school and downloaded Metropolis and was blown away. Only hearing that one song, I asked my dad if he wanted to go to a concert that night. He asked who, I said Dream Theater. He looked them up online really quick and saw that JP was the guitar player, he had recognized the name from all his guitar magazines. We both went to the show just a few hours later. They opened with As I Am and I pee'd my pants. I was hooked ever since.

I've posted this story here before, but I'll share it again:

Back in the summer of 2006, I really wanted to buy a new album but I only had a ten dollar bill. CDs in Canada usually cost somewhere in the realm of fifteen dollars (before tax) unless they're on sale, so I knew that finding anything would be a stretch.

When I got to the music store, I slowly made my way through the artists on my MP3 player and subsequently searched that artist's section on the shelf hoping for something cheap. Eventually I reached a terrible-quality bootleg of Dream Theater covering Damage Inc. that, looking back, I have absolutely no recollection of ever consciously downloading. Moving to the Dream Theater section, I discovered Awake was listed at the ridiculously low price of $7.99 (plus tax), which I could just afford. And it wasn't even on sale!

I listened to Awake all summer and never looked back. Nine albums later, it has remained my favourite.

I only get to see the guy who got me into DT (back in the Images days) every five years or so, and I had lunch with him yesterday.  He said he went to see DT for the Scenes tour and he walked out.  Some time back he decided to get into folk music and now he is touring as a folk singer.  I am all for people enjoying the music they like, it was just sad to not be able to share the DT joy with him as we used to.

I'm trying to remember why I picked it out, they must have had a few of their albums at the store. I'm gonna guess that it was the cheapest one they had.... I can't really remember though. lol, whatever it was it was a good choice. I remember I actually still had a handheld CD player and I listened to it in the car. After watching Budokan though, I was hooked. I liked some heavier music at that point, but I remember looking at the back cover and thinking "Only 18 songs? This'll only be about an hour." Couldn't stay awake past the keyboard solo at 2am. I learned that night that some bands have songs that last longer than 3 minutes.

I was in my second year of college, 1993-94, and my roommate and I had almost the EXACT same musical tastes (hard rock). He played me Images & Words and then let me borrow it, and after I had fully consumed and digested that, he let me borrow Awake. Then he bought ACOS and I loved that one, too.

After college, I had sort of lost touch with what DT was up to, and was browsing in a record store & came across FII. Snatched it up and liked a few songs (since then, the album has really grown on me). Then it wasn't until I was a stay-at-home Dad with my baby daughter for nine months that I had time to browse the Net and looked DT up--I saw they had a new album coming out (SFAM) so I put the date on my calendar. Hearing that it was a concept album really excited me because one of my all-time favorite albums at that time was Queensr˙che's Operation: Mindcrime, and there were definitely comparisons between QR's and DT's sound already. So SFAM was my first anticipated DT album. I remember listening to it a few times and it really had to grow on me, but now it is my favorite DT album.

I have what I feel is a very logical musical taste progression (no pun intended): KISS/70s classic rock as a kid; Stryper/80s hair bands as a teen; King's X/Collective Soul early college; then to Dream Theater, which for me is the pinnacle of my musical journey thus far.

I'm sure I'll find another threat to list my favorite bands, so I'll spare you that here.  ::)

In 1985 I formed a progressive rockband and during the next couple of years I was the guitarist, manager and producer of this band. We were really inspired bij Marillion's Misplaces Childhood when we formed the band. In 1989, after some gigs and releasing our music om tapes, I was reading the reviews in some magazines and allong with those I read a review of WDADU. I immediately bought the album and liked it. But it was really I&W in 1992 that blew me away. After listening to this album a lot, and attending the 1993 European DT concerts, I knew that this was exactly the music I liked the most and that this was the music I really wanted to play. But our bands technical skills were really far to low. So, we quite the band............and I kept listening to DT music and going to their gigs as much as I can.

It was in 2002, i think.. I was 16. I went to see my uncle, who is really into old prog-rock, for a weekend.
He said that if i liked metal, but wanted to challenge myself as a listener, and a musician (im a guitarist), i had to check out this dvd (LSFNY).
So, he showed it to me.. I was blown away.. Went and bought it myself, with the a change of seasons cd (was the song that really cought my attention), and i have been a big fan since!  :metal

The first DT song I heard was Voices (it was probably in my dad's car). I can't remember whether it was in (pre-)1997 or (after)1999. I remember being particulary fond of the guitar solo and ordering my dad to rewind whenever the solo ended). At that time I was a little kid about to go to school (if it was in 1999 or afterwards then I was already going to school) and probably either way I wasn't ready to take on the glory of DT.
Solitary Shell clicked on me (I didn't know the title that time) when I was 12 or 13 (2004-2005). I began appreciating DT when I was 15. The first album was SFAM (well technically Scenes From NY dvd). I was trying to find Solitary Shell and I thought that Overture 1928 and Strange Deja Vu resembled it. But in the process I began to like SFAM and I went on to listen to it like a madman and unfortunately over listened it. Afterwards I discovered Images and Words and this has stayed my favourite album just because every song on the disc is at least worth listening not to mention that most of them are pure orgasm (LTL F# and the solo afterwards is the best moment in DT history in my humble opinion).
I haven't bought FII or any bootlegs yet as they are really difficult to find here in Estonia. So I'm listening to the bootlegs from Youtube
and I have got some via torrents I admit it.

Freshman in high school, 2006, some seniors wore shirts for this mysteriously intriguing band called Dream Theater, and the shirts were pretty kickass (Octavrium, SFAM, Awake, like that) and they were listening to them constantly. I was really interested and a little while later I got my first DT album, Octavarium.
I just had this feeling, when I was first discovering them, that there was this sortof mystical epic-ness force surrounding them. Technically the first song of theirs I ever heard was Sacraficed Sons (Live) from their myspace. That intro just made me feel something.

Back in 1994 I was playing with the Dixie Dregs, and the band approached me asking if I was interested in becoming a member of the band. Unfortunately although I liked the band, I had obligations to the Dregs, so I had to turn them down, although I did help them out by playing one show with them in the fall of that year. Fast forward to 1998, Mike Portnoy calls me up and tells me he is forming an instrumental super group. At the time John Petrucci wasn't to be involved, but he ended up being the guitarist and through two albums and a few gigs I formed a solid musical cohesion with the pair. This was all around the time that my time with the Dregs was coming to an end, so after recording the 2nd LTE album, I was once again asked to join and I accepted.

That's how I got into Dream Theater.

My first boyfriend put on some of his music in my stereo while we were cuddling. It was Octavarium (but I didn't know that at the time). I didn't listen much, but suddenly I heard this awesome riff. The song continued just as good and I just loved it! I asked my boyfriend about the name of the song, he said Panic Attack. I listened to it for a while, then got bored.

Half a year later, I was talking to some friends about music and different bands we liked. One of them said "Dream Theater are fucking awesome. Just listen to this song. I don't get how they can play it, it doesn't even have a beat!" The name of the song was The Dance of Eternity. I listened to it for a while, then got bored.

More than a year after that, I found those two songs in my computer. I listened to them again and thought "Hell... why didn't I ever listen to them more than this?" I got all the albums and started to listen. Within four months of intense listening, I admitted them as my favourite band. I knew this was the case when I couldn't stop talking about them and I longed for listening to them while I listened to other bands.

I got into after looking for more bands with a similliar vibe to Rush, Maiden etc.  First album was TOT sometime in 2006.  However I do have a memory of hearing an advertisement on the radio the last time when DT came to my hometown of Spokane Washington (maybe the only time as far as i know).  Thought the band name was awesome, but wasn't really into music back then at all.  Later after ive been into the band I found out that the show i had heard about was where they played with Queensryche and they did a cover of comfortably numb with them.  I sooo regret not going to that show!

Nearly 5 year ago I was working in a guitar shop with a guy who was heavily into dream theater back in the day but had fallen out of touch with them lately. I was a huge muse fangirl and went on about them a bit, and he said something like 'if you think that's amazing music you should try a band called dream theater' and played some stuff on the guitar for me (mainly the instrumental middly bit from metropolis part 1). I went out and got train of thought (first I saw) and wasn't hugely impressed. I must have liked it somewhat though, because I remember the exact point it clicked, I was on the bus home from work at the roundabout near my old house, when stream of consciousness sorta fell into place and I realised how incredible it was. The next morning walking back from a friend's house, this dying soul sorta clicked. From that point onwards I got hold of everything and realised that I'd been missing out on the best band I'd ever (and still have ever) heard.

Heard The Glass Prison on the radio when 6 Degrees was released at beginning of 02 I think. It was on Totalrock back when it was on Sky Digital Radio on the Badger's Nadgers show. Being a huge Metallica fan I thought that it was awesome music with great musicianship and intelligent writing. He said that it was from a two disc album with one song being 42 minutes and I thought, I have to get this. It actually took me till the summer to buy my first albums coz I couldn't find their cds anywhere (I think that was when they were about at their least popular). I got Live at the Marquee and Awake. Bombay Vindaloo was my favourite song for quite some time actually.

In 2006 I was about 15 and started to get into prog, so I heard of Dream Theater just before Score was released.

The first album I had was Scenes From a Memory, then Awake. The first song that got me to listen to them a bit more often was Through Her Eyes, and then the proghead in me was born when I heard Beyond This Life.

My RA freshman year of college was a guitarist and a moderate DT fan.  He used to show me video clips of G3 with Petrucci and rave about him.  Then one day he had this CD called Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence by Dream Theater.  I thought those were both awesome names.  He played me Solitary Shell and I thought it was kinda cool, although the lead singer's voice was a bit unusual.

So I have this friend who used to download a whole bunch of music for me, and I asked him to look into Dream Theater for me and see if they had anything good.  The next day he sent me The Glass Prison, Honor Thy Father, As I Am, Home, Fatal Tragedy, and Learning to Live.

We found out on Wikipedia that this band's latest CD, Octavarium,  had come out a few months ago, and so he started downloading stuff from Octavarium.  (Although, later, I discovered that he'd only succeeded in downloading half of Elements of Persuasion.)  Anyway, we were hooked by the "new DT stuff," and after poking around on wikipedia, I decided my best bet would be SFAM because the concept sounded cool and Home and Fatal Tragedy were two of my favorites so far.  So I ordered it.

When it came, I popped it in and gave it a listen while playing Starcraft.  That was a fantastic experience.  I was absolutely blown away.  And I began snapping up all the other DT stuff I could find.

My best friend has this habit of showing me a band where he knows 1-3 songs...
then i start listening...and become a huge fan! ;D

He showed me Constant Motion in early 08'. It seemed cool, but it thought it seemed sort of un original on the 1st listen.  I then picked it up at my favorite music store as just a "what the F" type of thing...

I liked the 1st 4 songs a lot, but I wasn't a major fan. And later on, I saw greatest hit at circuit city, only a week out, for $15! I listened to disc 1 the most and became a semi fan.

About a month later, I was at my favorite music store again. I realized they had every DT album in stock. I had this strange feeling that I would really like them more, so as another "what the F" thing, I got the entire studio collection including ACOS. I spent $150! Over a week pay for me!!!

I listened to each album a ton. And since then... :hefdaddy

A friend of mine lent me Awake and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.  I listened to them maybe two times and didn't put it in my CD player again until perhaps a month or two later.  At that point, I kept playing it for background music, and started listening to it more and more.  I eventually had enough interest to get other albums of theirs, one at a time.  Next thing I know, I was listening to them almost exclusively for over a year.

My immediate answer to this thread was 'Vaseline'.

But the true answer is 'searching for "drum solo" on kazaa a good few years back, hearing Mike Portnoy, and deciding to check them out'

It was a couple of years ago, I was in my guitar class in high school and my teacher tells us about them, and lets us hear a solo, and it blew me away. To this day I don't remember what the song was he played for us.

Afterwards, I was talking to an old friend about them and he sent me Home. The first two minutes helped spur an obsession!

A little long, but if you want just start at the second paragraph.

For me personally, music has always been a part of my life. Apparently while in my mothers womb, she would sing to me constantly (my mother sang as a member of the NY Met for about 4 years before I was born), and my entire family used to have sing alongs ALLL the time. There were two passions I held as a child. One was drumming. The other was singing. I was a much better singer than a drummer though and sang my first solo at the age of 5 to an auditorium full of parents at a school concert. For the record I sang "Rocky Top". By the conclusion the parents were clapping to the beat so hard that I couldn't hear my own voice, which I recall really pissed me off.  The experience didn't deter me, and I  continued to sing at every chance. I sang in chorus all through elementary school, and even sang part of an old jingle on a local commercial when I was eight. I was paid the princely sum of $250.00. For the next 4 years I used to think I still had 250 dollars in the bank somewhere.   I had some pretty good pipes at an early age, and I sang in chorus all the way through high school, and was in our Mens Chorus as well. During my sophomore year of high school I sang in a local band called Bell Jar. Since I was so young, I had to have my mom chaperone me at clubs when we played out on the weekends. We had moderate success as a local band, culminating in our being one of the featured bands appearing on a local radio stations album (two years running), of local bands original songs. I recall our guitarist Greg telling me how close we were to getting signed and being famous (it's amazing how many musicians still think signing a record deal means you've made it to the pinnacle), and how I should say to hell with my football scholarship and not go to college.  :\
Because of college football, I was too busy to sing in a band full time, but I did sing here and there through college and then grad and law school.

In the early 90's I sang in a band called Snooze Button Trivia, and one of the songs we played was Lay it on the Line by Triumph. I always had a pretty good range. My vocal range was everything from a tenor to a baritone and I once had a voice coach tell me it was more of what she called a "tenortone". At various times I've been told I sound like various people (all vocalists experience this pretty regularly, especially if you do covers). I used to be able to (and still can sometimes) conjur up Don Henley so well, you'd think he was in the room. I have been asked more than once to join various Eagles tribute bands. I could also do a pretty decent Steve Perry too. I had a very strong head voice and could mix a falsetto in pretty well.

Anyway, we had just done "Lay it on the Line", and had finished our set when this really tiny anorexic looking chick walked up to me on my way to take a whiz and say "You sound more like the guy from Dream Theater than you do Rik Emmett." My first thought was WTF? I could nail those parts pretty well. In fact I felt that Emmett would have been proud of my pipes with his music. Instead of rolling my eyes I said "Dream who?"  She then asks me "Have you heard that new song called "Pull Me Under?" I answered "No", and a guy standing nearby said, "Dude, that song is out there! I mean it's awesome though. You do sound a little like that guy so you should check it out."

I did. Needless to say our band didn't have the chops to pull off a DT cover. Not properly anyway.   And I think my voice has the same power as JL, but no longer quite the range as I used too.   But from the first listen I've been hooked. They still never cease to amaze me. Clearly my second favorite band.

The last band I sang in was called Tempus Fugit, and DT's music was a huge inspiration to the entire band.

Probably 10 years ago, a friends boyfriend played me some DT and I wasn't very interested. Gah am I beating myself up now! 2 months ago my boyfriend wanted to introduce me to DT and decided to with Scenes. He was explaining the story as the songs went along. By Fatal Tragedy I had to have the entire discography. Now I'm trying to catch up on information, nuggets, inside jokes you all have/know about the band ect. It's a difficult task!

Well, I got introduced to Dream Theater earlier this year via my 20-year-old son who first heard of them via Guitar Hero and Rock Band.   I really liked "Pull Me Under," and my son handed me his CD of "Images and Words" to listen to and I was hooked big-time.  As I spend a lot of time driving daily, I have been listening almost non-stop to DT ever since -- IaW; 6DOIT; Octivarium; SFAM; SC; and now BC/SL.  I love how virtuosic they are in their abilities and the complexity of their music (I grew up mostly with classical music - so I'm a late bloomer, I guess, but it gives me real appreciation of Dream Theater's talent.)

well some back story here, i am a guitarist as well as one of my best friends, and at the time i was really into all the virtuoso guitarists like Satch, Vai, and Malmsteen, but not much else unfortunately, my good friends said "hey you should check out Dream Theater" he went on to explain that the John Petrucci guy i saw in all the G3 videos was in this band so i decided to check it out, he played me The Glass Prison, and well i got hooked and now i am the bigger DT fan in my group of friends  ;D

Back in 2004 (or was it 1995?), the singer of the band that used to rehearse before mine told us of DT (we didn't know about them at that time). However, it wasn't until a night when we went out together and ended up in a heavy pub that I first listened to a DT song. Specifically, it was Pull me Under or Take The Time (I'd say it was the former). I was so impressed that the day after I looked for the album where that song appeared (I&W) and got it. The week after I bought Awake.

I used to work with a guy who was a pretty big prog fan back in '07 and he'd play Rush, Tool, and DT ALL THE TIME. Seriously all the time. Thankfully, that was when I really started to appreciate Rush (aside from just knowing their radio hits) and really got into them when I heard 2112 the first time. As for DT and Tool, I just tuned them out most of the time. Then I heard two songs; "Octavarium" and "The Root of All Evil." I really liked them, so I d/l'd their discography and thought I'd give them a try. I still couldn't get into them until I heard "The Glass Prison." That was the song that made me really like DT.

Since then, I've managed to pick up most of their CD's and I haven't looked back.

I still don't care for Tool though.

How did I get into DT?

Well, I started with alcohol.  Some people are insanely confident or sexy or just have "mad skillz" and don't need it, but fuck it, I'm no Sean Connery.  Alcohol's always a good starter.  Anyway, I introduced myself and offered to buy 'em a round of drinks.  They were game as they're generally very courteous towards their fans.  Mike declined but I wasn't too worried as he is a fucking animal.  I figured my best bet was to go switch off between Petrucci and Portnoy.  Mike, being the energy generator that he is, was already on the dance floor.  That gave me some one on one time with Petrucci.  I asked if he'd been working out ( ;)).  He smiled and while I think he knew I was being coy, told me about his workout regime.  I went on to tell him what an inspiration he is to bodybuilders everywhere.  I had him blushing at this point.  A good sign, if you ask me.  I didn't want to overplay my hand though, so I took a moment to go dance with Mike.

I'm not gonna lie, the dance floor was packed!  I had a few drinks in me at this point so I was definitely feelin' the bass groove.  Mike was going crazy, slamming down his beloved Rock Juice like there was no tomorrow.  I engaged him in witty conversation.

Randal: Jesus man, why don't you slow down?
Mike: Are you kidding me?  I love this shit!  I LOVE IT!
Randal: Fine, suit yourself.  Just to forewarn you, you're not the only one getting worked up.

I lifted my eyebrow ever so slightly.

Mike: Awww shit!

We dance for about 20 minutes.  I didn't come on too strong though.  The night's young and I'm just warming up.  I decided to go request a song from the DJ.  I was surprised to discover that the turntable booth was empty.  There were tons of cables leading from the club's sound system back to the tables.  I followed them, momentarily distracted from my conquest, to find that cables ran into a keyboard, sitting in front of none other than Jordan Rudess.

Randal: Holy shit!  You're playing all the club music?
Jordan: Damn, why you act so surprised?  Aint none of these mutha fuckas goin' tell the difference.  Shit.
Randal: Fuck me . . .
Jordan: All in due time little fan, all in due time.

Jordan's a pimp, so that came as no surprise.  I decided to bump this party up a notch with ecstasy.  Soon sounds were pouring all over Mike and I.  I took off his shirt.  He didn't mind.  I soon felt John's muscles enter the dance floor.  He had a few glow sticks.  They looked like toothpicks in his hands.  Sweat pulsed from our bodies.  The drinks were getting to me so I headed towards the bathroom.

The bathroom was surprisingly empty.  I looked in the mirror.

Randal: You can do this Randal.

That's when I heard it.  Sobbing.  I peered under the stalls but didn't see anyone.  I slowly pushed the doors open, one by one.  Finally, I arrived at the last stall.  The door creaked open slowly and I saw Myung, sitting on the toilet, sobbing.  He began to open his mouth.  I place my finger on his lips.

Randal: Shhhhhhh.  No words.

We started making out.  I whispered sweet somethings into his ear.  Finally, I led him out of his porcelain prison and back out onto the dance floor.  Time stood still.  I looked over at Jordan and he was staring back at me.  He nodded his head.  I turned to Mike and Petrucci and they too, glistening like gods, gave me the look of seduction.  I turned to Myung and he turned his gaze towards the rear entrance.  This was going to happen.

We went out the back and found a large ditch, and at the center of it James and his trusty shovel.

James: Well, okay, I've dug the hole now and I think it's aboot time to use it, alright?

It started to rain.  The clothes came off.  Mudd and sweat and saliva cover the whole place.  There weren't 6 people in that ditch that night.  Just a mass of flesh and blood.  It was the most erotic night of my life.

. . . that's how I got into DT.

I wish I could narrow it down to a certain album or song or moment in my life, but I can only narrow it down to a certain time-frame - Winter 2003-2004. Around that time, I was getting serious in to collecting/acquiring music, mostly prog and prog-related stuff. Rush was always a big favorite of mine through high school and my early years in college, so in late 2003, I began buying their albums, and somehow found the connection to Dream Theater somewhere along the way.

I think reading about their older albums having a Rush-like sound intrigued me so I sought out their first 5 studio albums plus ACOS. After hearing those albums, plus SDOIT and TOT, I was pretty much sold, although I believe I heard TOT first before much of their material up to that album. It was probably awkward hearing their heaviest album first, then going back to everything else, but I stuck it through and now (and since), they're my 2nd favorite band!

-Marc.

Listened to some 6DOIT, thought it was alright but nothing special.  Heard As I Am before tagging along with some friends to see them live back in 2004, thought it was pretty good.  Saw them doing their thing, before closing with ACOS (it's damn shame I'd never heard the song before) and became a fan almost instantly.  I spent the better part of the next year scooping up all their studio albums and downloading what bootlegs and whatnot I could manage on dial-up.

Yeeeah.  I regret nothing.

I don't know how I missed this one, but seriously dude, here's the POTY trophy, just don't tell me what you are going to do with it.

Edit:just saw the pics, damn I though you were making this shit up.
