Anyone familiar with this piece of music? What do DT fans think of this?
This is simply a 1 hour long song. I gotta say, I picked this up not knowing anything about the band or musicians but simply for the novelty of a 60min song. This is one of the greatest pieces of goth/prog/doom metal ever.
This is a piece of art. One would think one song spanning 60 minutes would fail, but they would be wrong. This is in fact 1 song, it's not a Six Degrees or Pleasant Shade of Grey gimmick with 7 or 8 different songs stuck together to make 1 long track. The whole thing to me is incredible, a beautiful piece of work, one of a kind. It's amazing how it never gets boring. The first half an hour flies by, with amazing riff's, recurring themes, great melodies and fantastic instrumental sections.
The female vocal/sax duo at about 32:00 is incredible. It gives me chills and the mood really scares the living crap out of me, it's that haunting. An emotive, touching section. The builup to the incredible guitar solo is immense. A 2 minute solo at the 42:00 mark is filled with such feeling, some odd note selections strangely seems perfectly in place. The return to the theme at the 55:00 or so minute mark rounds this amazing piece of music off perfectly.
I recommend every music lover to at least give this a go, you might be surprised.
-
Yep it's great. A must have for any Progressive Metal fan
-
agreed!
-
Yeah, I really like it. While most people hate the section, I love the saxophone/female singing part about halfway in.
-
Amazing amazing song.
-
I thought the first fifteen minutes were pretty meh, so I didn't bother listening to the rest.

You are aware that SDOIT is one song, right? It was composed as a single song, but they decided to split it up on the album into tracks.
-
Heavy hail of fail comin' from up above me here.
-
Same here.
-
great record. Admittedly, I need to listen to it and Godspeed's Skinny Fists album more, I just need to remember to.

If you like Skinny Fists, You should definitely check out there other album F#A# infinity and their EP Slow Riot for Zero Kanada. Both just as amazing
-
This song is really good.
-
It's awesome. Though, I don't think I've heard a bad albumsong.
-
I didn't listen to that particular song, but i've heard other songs by them. I really like what I heard, it's like a missing link for me that is
-
Everytime I look at the topic "Genre Confusion" I think of Green Carnation. Same number of letters and same starting letters :lol
-
It's a great song and a great album! It's kind of weird listening to it on LP, having to change sides AND LPs in "the middle" of a song is strange. (We do have it on cd as well).
-
Odd, I just had this song come up on my itunes random playlist of awesome today. I love this song, because unlike every other super super long song I know of, it doesn't change drastically into movements. It's got its own sound. The bit from 33:00 to 37:00 with the female wailing can jump off a cliff, but the rest of the song is incredible.
TO MY NEW WORLD
MY BRAVE NEW WORLD
WHERE RIGHT IS WRONG
WHERE JUSTICE IS GONE
:metal
-
Awesome song! I really like the intro with the noise and stuff, and then the song never seems to drag.

Well, I do understand that it stated that it is one song, but really, the sections are too different for it to in fact be one long song IMO. The band also play certain sections live proving that each section can be it's own tune. Same goes with Fates Warning's Shade of Grey. The different sections have different flavours, tones and colours, IMO never giving the feeling that I'm listening to one long track. Maybe you should sit through the entire hour of Green Carnation and you might see what I mean. There are too many recurring themes and melodies for it to be split up.
-

Yeah, I'm learning to love it myself. The atmosphere and tension it builds is immense. I can easily see why it would get disliked, but for me, it's quite a pleasure to listen to, especially the way it builds after that into the guitar solo.
-
Brilliant album/song.
Such a shame they split. GoC were one of my favourite bands.

I'm not saying anything about how it sounds, just making sure you knew that it was written and composed as a single song. Any splitting that happened came along in post production.

I actually own F#A# and have played it once or twice. Godspeed are great, but I find them to be kind of a mood-band, even as great as they are.

So I finally got my physical copy of this disc after over a year of waiting to find it for a reasonable price and a month after that waiting for it to come in the mail. SO HAPPY ;D
(btw don't ask how i had it before just know that I legally own the disc atm)
-
YOU PROBABLY DOWNLOADED IT ILLEGALLY BEFORE YOU SON OF A BITCH
I KNEW IT

Is this reasonable enough? I don't want to pay too much if I buy it.
-
Wait. WHAT?! They reissued it? Like a week ago? IN A DIGIPAK? WHAT?!
-
They also reissued the disc which is what I got <_<
-
Wow, it's been reissued, my copy I bought only a few weeks ago is the original pressing.
-
I just made a nifty edit of this song without that Siren whaling in the desert. I sicked Kratos on that bitch.

As much as I love the full song, I'm interested in making a bit of an edit myself, just for fun.
-
Without the female vox it's still 55:06 and it doesn't sound like something should be there. He stops singing and it gets quiet for a tad and the acoustic guitar chord stikes.
-
Just got the digipak re-release, having never had a physical copy. Quite nice, has the lyrics written in.
-

Yeah, I thought it would work quite nicely like that, considering the segues between these sections. Still bloody long, but come to think of it, nothing else really deserves to be edited out.
-
Been listening to this again lately, thought the thread deserves a bump, amazing song!!
-

I love that part of the song tbh.

Oh well, 56 minutes out of 60 are stellar.

God damn I'm listening to this song for the first time in probably two years; I forgot how fucking awesome it was.
-
I still haven't listened to it, though I know I should. Based on how I love A Blessing in Disguise and The Acoustic Verses, plus my love for music which feels monumental, I think I definitely should...
-
I still haven't listened to any of their other stuff :lol
-
Listen to the two I mentioned above. Both are awesome.
-
A Blessing in Disguise is very VERY hit or miss.
Though Lullaby in Winter is incredible.
-
I love the whole album. If I had to choose the highlights, it would be Crushed to Dust, Lullaby in Winter, Boy In The Attic, Two Seconds in Life, Rain... I think you get the point.
-
Well, Sintheros and I seem to have opposing opinions on everything, while Darkes and I seem to have opposing opinions maybe only 70% of the time, so I guess I'll try out Blessing in Disguise first :lol
-
It depends on what you're looking for - A Blessing in Disguise is more in a straightforward heavy metal style (although the whole album has an incredible atmosphere, especially Two Seconds in Life which was their first song I heard), The Acoustic Verses is... prepare for a shock... acoustic and much calmer, and it's just beautiful. Both are excellent.
-
I love The Acoustic Verses :tup though, aside from LoD,DoD it's the only thing I've heard from Green Carnation.
-

I know, when I listened to it again, I got chills during this section, a true masterpiece and this section DESERVES to be in there.
-

You are a fan and you have not heard Light of Day. Do yourself a favour my friend and get it, and prepare to be blown away.
I must say, I don't own Blessing, I should fix that. The acoustic session is quite excellent. I am also a big fan of the Quiet Offspring, that is a killer rock album!!
-
I still haven't listened to any of their other stuff :lol
-
I'm listening to A Blessing In Disguise now, first time hearing this band. I like what I'm hearing so far. :tup
-
Lullaby in Winter is the best song on that album by a mile, and then there's a lot of good tracks and a few mediocre ones.
Lullaby's also the song that sounds the most like Light of Day, Day of Darkness.
-
Sorry, I think Two Seconds in Life owns the album. :D
-
Haven't listened to this in a very long time. I need to.
-
Oh god the part around 15:00 where the strings come is pure orgasm distilled into music form.
-
Haven't listened to this in a very long time. I need to.
You most certainly do.
-
I only took out the Siren section to see if I could and to make room on my ipod. It's the only section of the song where nothing happens so I wouldn't miss it.
-

Yes yes!! Amazing section, the whole half an hour is pure bliss, and I still can't believe how quickly it flows by.

I think it's an acquired taste. At first I thought it was ridiculous at first, but it has grown on me, the atmosphere of it is amazing. I especially love how it drops into that part at around 33 minutes after the line "In this dream I conceive a perfect plan. EPIC!!

I loved that part when I first heard it.
Also, I never really got into their other albums much. Not saying their bad, they just never captured me the way LODDOD did.

I agree, LODDOD has a certain magic which will never be recreated. Listened to it again as I was driving, pure bliss.

Note: The only reason to actually watch this is to laugh at how he says the two growled lines (And on the edge of sanity, I stumble and FALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL), and to see how awesome they make the riff behind the "Am I the only one the mirror sees" part.
-
Been listening to this a lot again lately, magic tune.
-
Yeah this song's pretty awesome. One of the easier to digest album-length songs out there.

Definitely.

anybody own this on vinyl? was considering getting the wax boxset, but it wouldn't be worth the price if they went el cheapo and just faded the song out and in at the ends and starts of the sides.

also available at https://www.grau.cd/ for a lesser price (though i dunno how their shipping price compares).
it's apparently limited to 333 copies.

Damn, haven't listened to this in a while v_v
Definitely need to spin it again soon.

Last time I listened to this song was in May while waiting in line for Symphony X. Gonna have to give it another listen soon.
-
One of my favorite riffs of all time is at around 21:40. :metal :metal
-
The only issue with this song is that when you listen to it you only get one scrobble on last.fm, whereas listening to other albums nets them 8-10, so Green Carnation gets less credit compared to other albums.
Wolfking actually sent me this song in my roulette, which is how I discovered them. Now I own it.

Hey, check this out, I've done a cover of the guitar solo for kicks. Pretty difficult to emulate perfectly. It's not perfect but an attempt nevertheless.
I still find myself listening to this song on a weekly basis.

Epic bump! I have just listened to Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness, and, wow. What a gorgeous song/album. As my fourth Green Carnation song, I am extremely positive that I will furtherly explore this band!
I was about to open a thread named "Green Carnation v. Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness", then I decided to give a sense to the existence of the search tool.
-
This is one of my favourite pieces of music by anyone, period. I love the atmosphere, and the buildup over the part from 33:00 to 38:00 to that awesome, awesome guitar solo is truly a thing to behold.
:metal
-
Still havent checked this out.
-
good timing on the bump! I just listened to this last night. Awesome song. Although "song" doesn't really do it justice. It's a work of art.
-
Still havent checked this out.
Do it ASAP.
-
Nice bump. Definitely one of the greatest tracks of all time. You guys have inspired me to have a listen to this again tonight.
