DREAM THEATER's John Petrucci On New Solo CD - "I Hope To Finish Writing The Material And Get To Recording Next Year"
Posted on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 10:18:01 EST
I Heart Guitar Blog's Peter Hodgson has issue a new interview with DREAM THEATER's John Petrucci, in which he confirms that he's started work on his next solo CD.
The following is an excerpt: Q: So what’s next after this tour? Are you gonna do another solo album soon? A: "You know, a lot of people ask me about that, and I did start to write, finally! I got the bug, I got bit by it, I started to write this music and I’ve been in a nice writing flow. So I hope to finish writing the material and get to record next year. So I’m psyched about that."
Q: Any idea where it’s heading yet? A: "Yeah, I have a total idea where it’s heading. I don’t like to really talk about it but I think by now people kinda know my style and what I do, and hopefully it’ll be more of that!"

Holy tittyfucking Christ. That's the best news I've heard in months.

Nice!

I really hope he calls it "Welcome Back, Guitar N00bs".

Cool news anyway!

YES YES YES YES.
I would have given up new LaBrie, Jelly Jam, and Rudess all for a new JP CD without question. Now I can has them all. :D
-
I really hope he calls it "Welcome Back, Guitar N00bs".
this x 10000
seriously though, this news has put me on the express train to bonertown

Actually, that will be the album title.
-
Excellent news, I can't wait. :D
Btw, I'm wondering... will it also be all-instrumental, or maybe JP will try doing some vocals this time? This could be interesting :)
-
He should stick to his strengths.
-
I'm pretty sure at least the majority of the album will be instrumental, but I'd really like a song or two with vocals. The main problem with the song he sang with DT is that the lead vocals were pretty difficult for him as they were, but since this time he's writing all the songs, he's able to write something that fits his abilities and vocal range well.
-
Hopefully it's a bit more interesting than Suspended Animation.
Cool news anyway!
This

yeah boiiii goood news. Tbh i think DT having a year out for JP/JR and anyone else to do thier solo thing is gonna be enjoyable for all!

I can't decide between that or When Bears Attack

Petrucci seems like a friendly interviewee. A lot of guys wouldn't have bothered to engage in actual conversation (asking what kind of guitar interviewer had, etc). Always nice to see.
Also, new solo album=YES PLEASE.
-
Hopefully it's a bit more interesting than Suspended Animation.
Cool news anyway!
Shame on you, friend! Of course, if it is better than Suspended Animation, then I'm gonna need a change of pants. In fact, that should be the name of the album "A Change of Pants"

This guarantees a month of being in a state of euphoria.

Just when I was starting to think that I agree with you a lot, you blew it! :censored
Can't wait for this! I'll leave it at that.

Cool news, I'm really looking forward to it. :metal

:lol It really does seem like I'm the only person who doesn't think SA is amazing. I mean, it's not bad or anything, it's always just struck me as a really bog standard solo guitar album. Never understood the obsession over it.

I agree with you. That sort of purely guitar oriented music never really did anything for me. Yeah it sounds pretty complex, but I just don't really enjoy it. There is only so much you can do with non-stop guitar licks and effects.

Me neither. I'm not really interested in pure instrumental music (LTE and such) at all.

I felt the same on first listen, but after a few listens I really loved it. At first it feels a bit empty compared to LTE with the lack of keys, but now that doesn't bother me at all.

It's not just the lack of keys, it's the lack of variety of ideas for me.

Well I initially thought the lack of keys gave it a lack of variety, so that's why I mentioned it. Personally I think it has plenty of variety though, with his soloing showing more styles than he is able to showcase within DT. And I must admit, I am a huge sucker for JP's rock playing, and there is a lot of it on the album. Wishful Thinking - 6:37 = yummy.
-
Gahh. TG. Was going to ask him about this at his Sydney clinic but the line was too fast and I was too n00bish and afraid to ask him so instead chatted for 5 seconds about his beard's volume reduction
Can't wait for it.
-
YES YES YES YES.
I would have given up new LaBrie, Jelly Jam, and Rudess all for a new JP CD without question. Now I can has them all. :D
So everyone's got their side-projects going. Weren't most the first side projects right before Scenes From A Memory?
-
So we're getting a new JP solo album, a new JLB solo album, and possibly a Jelly Jam album. 2010 is going to be a good year for music.
-
So excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go solo projects.
-
I don't want to get overly excited here, but what if the Portnoy/Wilson/Akerfelt project is finally able to materialize?

Opeth doesn't write good songs, but I like Akerfelt as a vocalist and a guitarist.
I'm not a huge Porcupine Tree fan, but Fear of a Blank Planet is a really good album, and I think Steven Wilson is capable of writing great music.
-
Hopefully it's a bit more interesting than Suspended Animation.
Cool news anyway!
Agreed. Suspended Animation is solid enough, but it doesn't do a lot for me. I'm still looking forward to what JP does with this one, though.
-
i just get mad when I hear things like SA and LTE because I think immediately "these ideas could have been incorporated in DT."

This, most definitely this.
The great thing about SA is that, with the lack of keys, JP can start layering out the wazoo. At times there are six or more guitars going on at once! He can't do this with DT - it would just get too busy/muddy and impossible to reproduce live.
-
Awesome, seems like 2010 will be an interesting year too.
-
Cool. :tup
-

I don't know, can one year hold that much awesomeness?
-
YES! A lot to look forward to in the DT camp! This will be awesome.
-
i just get mad when I hear things like SA and LTE because I think immediately "these ideas could have been incorporated in DT."
Why? Neither of them really sound like DT at all.
-
The instrumental stuff in LTE is so awesome, though, that JR and JP taking turns soloing in DT really pales in comparison IMO.
-

Yeah most of the time it does. There are some compositional elements or something present in LTE that are largely absent from DT's music, and I think it goes beyond just "LTE is purely instrument-driven". I've often wondered what is behind some of those differences; I mean a lot of LTE still falls within the realm of "progressive rock/metal", even if it doesn't sound like DT minus LaBrie.

Other acceptable album titles would be:
"Pedalboard of Death"
"So Many Memories of Death"
"I Don't Care Yngwie, Shut Up"
"Yes, I am Your God"
"World Domination Mode"
"Killzone Mode"
-
I still need to get Suspended Animation. Man I'm behind.

There are plenty of us who feel that way, not just Reap. Sorry if I'm not an Opeth sheep. (rhyme unintentional)

Thinking someone writes good songs, let alone acknowledging that idea ≠ being a "sheep"
Oh, and .. lol
-
Hopefully it's a bit more interesting than Suspended Animation.
Cool news anyway!
I could not agree more.
The first one was a collection of re-hashed riffs from various tours thrown together to make "songs".....it was pretty much fanboy fodder..with some exciting solos thrown in so people didn't feel completly ripped off.

I can't wait for this. I always have Glasgow Kiss stuck in my head.

As much as I really do love SA, I agree with this. Here's to hoping a hefty amount of new ground is touched upon.

Shame on you, friend! Of course, if it is better than Suspended Animation, then I'm gonna need a change of pants. In fact, that should be the name of the album "A Change of Pants"
A Change of Seasons is now A Change of Jeans On.

Let me be the first to say this: Hopefully the amazing Dave DiCenso will be back and kick some more ass on this one!

Ditto. If it's even better than SA, it might well become the standard background music for sperm banks.

This. And there is a difference between saying you don't like a certain band, and saying they don't write good songs. But we've all been into a debate like this before, so let's not get it started again.

I hope you guys don't mind me bumping this thread, I didn't want to start a new thread as I was sure there was one about this topic somewhere on the board.
I was thinking about the next JP solo album and I remembered him mentioning that he would like to play with Mike Portnoy some time in the future. Seeing as though this will be quite unlikely to happen in DT, who thinks it would be a good idea to have MP play the drums on this album?

I don't think it would be a good idea OR a bad idea. It would just be him hiring someone to play drums.
-
He should get Gene Hoglan.
-
I feel a new topic coming up: Place your bets - Drummer on JP's next solo album...
-
Or maybe even get someone who auditioned for DT but didnt get the place, like as a consolation
-
This is going to be sweet.
-
Definitely NOT a good idea right now. It's way too soon.

SA is awesome. When will we get this? Did I miss a date for it?

I don't expect to hear anything on this topic until fall this year. Keep in mind how long it took for SA to finally come out. We were joking it was a second Chinese Democracy back in the day.

Guitar Cozmo.
Learn the name.
-
I think he has written for it, but I dont think he was actually tracking it yet. I would expect that after the new DT cd is in the can he will start to track the new record.
MP would be great on it. Seriously.
However, I vote for Jonathan Mover or Marco Minnemann.
