Definitely in. Basically I can send the opposite type of music I'm sending to Chad. Perfect. :burns:
I can send you all the good stuff I can’t send Chad. Plus, since I’ve been largely gone for eight years I’ll just send stuff not on the banned list so you might get something very new that catches your attention - for better or worse.
TASTES
...
I do, however, want to strongly caution against prog metal. There's a ton of that stuff on my banned list, because I listened to a ton of it years ago, and while I still enjoy a lot of my favorites, I very very rarely find anything new in that mold that excites me at all. So, don't send it. At this point I'm not going to reject submissions, but you're likely to get a pretty weak score and hopefully that will be sufficient deterrent.
In! :metal

Sure, let's go. :corn

Brutal scores and writeups that don't hold back, hell yeah, bring it. Sounds fun. In if you want me.

I'm sure I missed it in the OP, but do you prefer Spotify links or something else?

I already knew that SN and I were not a match, but these two statements validate that I should NOT participate in this roulette. lol
.
Is this an entry? If so, you're in. If not, you're in anyway, and I expect you to start sending songs immediately.
i remember shadow mostly for sending me a ton of absolute garbage in the first half of my first roulette followed by being the most interesting and best-scoring participant in the second half of my first roulette :corn
i live for the chaos and i have a lot of chaos i'm looking to inflict on him. i dunno if it's all good chaos. but it is definitely chaos

Alright..I guess I'm in, but I have no clue where we're going to cross tastes.
You'll have 20 minutes tonight!
The end of the weekend, slacker?? WTF?
Shit, now I have to work out how to create a Spotify playlist. This might take me a while. ;D
I just did. Wasn't that hard.
I'll play if there's still room. A lot of crossover on that banned list.
x.

Well, if Tim's willing to give it a go, maybe I will. I've got to find upwards of 120-160 minutes of eclectic (for my tastes) stuff. Dunno. Maybe. If I decide to go at it, I'll send something by the end of the weekend. I've got to get my round of scoring up for the boys before I can start to look for stuff here.

No worries, I won't have gotten things really started until then anyway. If in you're really in a bind, you can just youtube 'weirdo shit' and send me whatever comes up.

I snuck Tragic Kingdom into my original Top 50 albums list! That's a fantastic album.
I just don't get it. Her voice sounds like she's doing a joke bad voice to make fun of someone, but she just does it all the time and for some reason everyone pretends like she sounds good. No, I get it. Her voice is very unique and not everyone likes it. I'm indifferent about it, but those 90's No Doubt stuff are pretty good (IMO, of course)
Gwen Stefani blows. Her voice is awful.
Don’t Speak should’ve been called Don’t Sing.

Round 6 Results
Jingle.boy: Arch Enemy – You Will Know My Name (Live)
Excellent female growling and clearly one of the best songs of the round. It definitely has that live recording energy to it, which I suspect adds quite a lot. The riffs are good, the solo is nice and appropriate (though not really mind-blowing), and the song has a really nice hook. Or perhaps it's just that this song looks better than it is alongside the more mediocre submissions in the group? 7

That was to Nelson, not Tim. Female harsh vocals are no problem for Nelson, he tried to send me Lingua Ignota.
Interesting Arch Enemy song Chad. Didn't think you'd like that at all.

WOLFKING-The Bitches Are Back In Town
1. Arch Enemy-Blood On Your Hands** 8.5
This song is total metal. Not sure I'm totally on board with this chick's vocals. Kind of creeps me out.
2. Arch Enemy-Nemesis 8.5
I like this one a lot, vocals notwithstanding. This song is loaded with Schenkerisms, and you know I appreciate that.
To be fair, their covers are fucking horrible. 7.0 is generous IMO :lol
Sent! I'm officially in my first Shadow Ninja roulette. :fistpump:
Yes, playlist is very cool and very legal.Cool, I have some family staying for the weekend so it's all a bit crazy but should be able to send this evening or if not then tomorrow evening!
Also, I'll say round 1 has officially begun now, so the five people who haven't submitted yet have 72 hours to do, or until around 10 Tuesday in local Shadow Ninja time.
i have no intention of winning i just hope my submissions are predictable (they are)
Sent! I'm officially in my first Shadow Ninja roulette. :fistpump:
Round 1 sent.
First rounds always take longer to figure out what to pick, especially when needing more music, and with a host with more inscrutable tastes. I have lots of ideas starting to line up now though.
Sent! I'm officially in my first Shadow Ninja roulette. :fistpump:
Same I think... Just gonna throw shit against the wall and see what sticks. Started with a recent roulette staple of mine.
i have no intention of winning i just hope my submissions are interesting (they are)
Ninja, question about scoring. How will you be scoring multiple songs? Like, if I add a little 2 minute interlude in my 20 minutes of music, is that likely to bring my average score down?
My gut is that I want to make sure my 20 minutes gives you a good idea of what each band is capable of. Interludes could improve the overall flow of my submission, but if I'm gonna end up with a lower score average because of it, I'll skip that approach.
really now, i wasn't considering any post-hardcore stuff but i might have to revise that :corni have no intention of winning i just hope my submissions are interesting (they are)
I find your taste just as incomprehensible as mine, so I'm always interested to see what you send. Not saying I'll like it, but you never know. I still play that Actor | Observer album you sent me some songs from last time around.

The 'just try random stuff' method is one I employ pretty much exclusively in all roulettes

The funny thing is that from my limited and underinformed perspective you two seem more similar than most here.

Tell me about it.. :neverusethis:
it's also noting that i have acquired a ton of new brainworms over the course of the last year, even since i ran my last roulette
the weird round is the only round from that roulette i even remember particularly well ngl
i don't think even i know what my tastes are atm. i'm currently listening to a big band ensemble performing prog rock songs with a halloween-style spookycore aesthetic (i might send this in the roulette idk)

The main issue I have with post-hardcore in general is the non-scream vocal lines tend to strike me as really weak and not particularly melodic or memorable. I don't know if it's an intentional choice that I'm just not understanding, or what, but it seems pretty common to me. I think it's one of the reasons I tend to listen to more metalcore than post-hardcore; even though a lot of metalcore groups go too far into overproduced poppy clean sections for me personally, they're usually at least catchy and nice to listen.
I do like post-hardcore, though, Thrice and Capstan are two I really love that I don't feel fall into the vocal trap. Also Brutus? I guess they're kind of post-hardcorey although they still sort of defy categorization to me.

Damn, I've only just seen this thread, if you've got space for 1 more, I'llmake you regret itsend cool stuff. Prob not much metal tho :corn

Run a roulette and I'll change that very quickly
3 or 11.....maybe 4/5..
8?
Andy James ... 4/5 or 9/10
14?
4/5?
11? :P
Andy James ... 4/5 or 9/10
OK I am realizing now that 4 and 5 could apply to almost everyone who's been in one of my roulettes before, and even a few who haven't. :lol I didn't write it for yours, though, and it's not 9 or 10 either. I suspect yours might be rather hard for you to guess, but I think me saying that will make it fairly easy for you.

I'll bet I can prove you wrong! :lol
3?
9/10?
I added 18 as a guess too, you may not have seen.
I would love for it to be 15/16, but I don't know enough about you yet, so that would be blindly stumbling into a jackpot. But none of the others really make sense, unless I'm just thinking about one of them completely wrong (which happens more frequently than I'd like!)
the only ones that can reasonably apply are [9]/[10], [14], and [15]/[/16] so
Too many choices, I abstain while I am on vacation.
I'll say 14 then.
i love chaos. like shadow the hedgehog, i chaos control
I've gotta be number 6.
Mine could be 14, although I don't think it's that quirky. If not then possibly 15/16.
So funny, Rich mentioned power metal too when I sent Brymir to him. I didn't really pick that up when getting into them. I can see it though. Just funny you both have had a similar impression.
I'm gonna pull a Costanza.
I'll guess 6 (Xandria/Unleash the Archers), or 7 (Buckethead).
Surely these have to be wrong.
:lol I love the chaos.Mine could be 14, although I don't think it's that quirky. If not then possibly 15/16.
You are both 14 and 15 or 16. So stew on that for a while. :lol
In fairness you've not been in my last couple of roulettes but either I've gotten over whatever was putting me off power metal a few years ago or people have got better at hitting my tastes with it, because power metal (and adjacent styles) generally did pretty well in my latest one! Even the utter cheese-fest that is Fellowship. So funny, Rich mentioned power metal too when I sent Brymir to him. I didn't really pick that up when getting into them. I can see it though. Rich and I seem to be on the same page, which possibly bodes well for him in this game. Although I think we have different opinions on power metal; I fucking love power metal so I recognize it whenever it shows up. Rich I think is considerably cooler on it and may notice it for kind of the same reason.
Even the utter cheese-fest that is Fellowship.
Is it the punky math rock one?

SCORING
Songs will be scored on a scale from 1-10. In most roulettes scores will generally sit between 7-9, with occasional deviation for really good or bad songs, but to me it doesn't make much sense to have a scale I only touch a quarter of, since even if there is some hypothetical 'worst music ever' that would receive a score of 1 and make me want to tear my ears off, realistically most music I'm going to get is at worst kind of annoying or just boring. Thus something can score a 4 or 5 in my roulette if I just find it decent but not very interesting or engaging.
The scores may appear vicious at first, but they're really not. This also means scores can vary quite wildly from round to round, so don't count yourself out just because you're 10 points behind or something, that could easily be almost entirely wiped out in one round.
Well, that round shit the bed. Yikes!
Gonna scrap what I had on deck for Round 2 then.
I'll take it! Considering Andy James is 100% instrumental, you're damned right the music was written with the guitar in mind.
Since I scored quite literally in the middle of the pack, I'm debating whether to stay or stray from my instrumental strategy. If I take another route and score worse, I could always return.
So, if I'm hearing you correctly, sending you more jazz is definitely a winning strategy.
Well, that round shit the bed. Yikes!
Gonna scrap what I had on deck for Round 2 then.
I think you meant 4 points for each song...that would give me 8! :lol
Glad you enjoyed that. Moron Police scores well in pretty much every roulette, so I'm not upset falling behind them.
I'm feeling pretty confident going forward.....now watch me tank the next round.
Rich has 36
Yeah, I'll give you a heads up if I decide to swap anything.I think you meant 4 points for each song...that would give me 8! :lol
OK, but if I do that Rich has 36 and DTVT has 45. It's a dangerous road you're going down.Glad you enjoyed that. Moron Police scores well in pretty much every roulette, so I'm not upset falling behind them.
I'm feeling pretty confident going forward.....now watch me tank the next round.
BTW, if you're making changes to your big submission playlist, make sure to let me know. I toss each round into its own playlist to help with the way I randomize listening each time, so I might not notice if the main one changes.

:lol I did seem to come down pretty hard on the jazz entries this time. To be honest I'd like to hear more jazz because I do like a bit and feel that I could potentially like a lot of it, but at the same time I can't promise I won't keep giving out 3s to jazz submittals so I won't necessarily encourage people to send it.

Destiny Potato not banned but David Maxim Micic is? A travesty. This is exactly the inconsistency I noticed with 425 awhile ago too. I'd probably have selected a different batch of songs, but I'm fascinated to see how this goes. If it's not Sacul I could see it being ariich.

Wasn't it Chad that did comparisons of the submitted song and the spotify suggested song in a roulette?
The "Autoplay" setting was recently updated. The single "Autoplay" setting in the desktop and mobile apps will now enable or disable Autoplay across all devices on your account. This change makes it easier to manage instead of there being 2 different settings.
You only need to change the Autoplay setting in one of the apps, either desktop or mobile, and it will apply to your account on all devices including the Web Player and Spotify Connect devices.

Maybe. I don't remember.
It's really not that difficult, I'm sure even Tim figured it out. In the Settings ... third option down is "Autoplay. Enjoy nonstop listening. When you're audio ends, we'll play you something similar". Turn that off.

I'm with you for a change, had to Google it myself
Also I find it very interesting to see people discuss the relative strength of rounds and what you think I will/won't like. I won't say whether or not any of it is accurate, but I do find it interesting. :P
OK, but I'll exclusively use Homestuck gifs.
Rich, a cool addition to the spreadsheet might be a 'solve everything' toggle, unless there's one already there that I've just missed, which is possible. I may spend some time messing around with it and if I come up with something that's not unbearably janky I'll send it your way.Interesting idea, I'll have a think about what might be possible. I can see it working for the standard single song/album roulettes by just putting a Y everywhere, but for the multi-song ones it doesn't display as well if a Y appears in the wrong place. Mainly it's that if there's a Y in the sender column then tracks don't get indented in.

I tried reading a tad about Homestuck and it seems like things get complicated and weird fast, but how far off am I if I posit that Homestuck is kind of the next generation equivalent to Homestar Runner, but more sci-fi and macabre? From what little I know about both, that may be accurate.

the pointless instrumental noodling (like the piano break in It’s All Nothing)
Billy Idol fans, weigh in here, because this has actually baffled me. Do other people hear this? Am I crazy? Is this just Billy Idol’s style?
This isn’t the first time this has happened, which to be honest has led me to wonder where there even are any instrumental post-metal bands, or is that a genre I’ve made up and populated entirely with groups who play completely different music? (For real though I think I just combined them in my head with Russian Circles)
Based on the group name and the various album covers, I think I was expecting this to be a bit more emo-dramatic (a genre I just invented), like a version of Panic at the Disco that didn’t suck, but apart from a few bits in Down, this is mostly just rock-tinged electropop,
Frankly, I just really like metalcore. That may lead people into trouble when everyone tries to submit metalcore next round and I don’t like most of it, but so far it seems like a pretty solid bet for submissions.
Isn’t Dave Lombardo the drummer for Slayer? Am I thinking of someone else?

His voice is probably a bit more about character and attitude than strong melodies compared to some vocalists, maybe that's what you're picking up on.

Well with that attitude, of course you do!
I do have to say I found it kind of funny that you apparently scrapped your whole gameplan after the last round, and then sent me something that was stylistically very similar. :lol It even has the same atmospheric keyboard stuff! Although to be fair, I did say I liked that part of Fires in the Distance.
Oof. Need to do better next round.
I'm not going to disagree that the vocals are the weakest part of Sworn, musically they are amazing, so I can relate to that.
A 7 is not 100, but it's better than 0. ;D
I've no idea for round 3, might be 24 hours before I send.
Hey, my gamble worked! Nice!

Black Heaven
Annabelle
The Ballad of Spook and Mercy
Lovers Led Astray
Chapel Gates
7 points
You’ve been in the ‘good but not great’ territory scorewise on both rounds, but I feel like I should mention that stylistically, both your submissions have pretty much been bullseyes for the kind of music I like. This kind of dark, really dramatic style is just something that really works for me. Black Heaven, in particular, is absolutely fantastic, with the ominous baritone vocals. Annabelle, Lovers Led Astray, and Chapel Gates do a great job of maintaining the same kind of over dramaticism with a more punk-infused approach to the vocals and music. The Ballad of Spook and Mercy is the real miss for me; even though I love the idea of the style of song, in practice I don’t think the melodies were strong enough to make it work, and the delivery wasn’t really interesting in a way that made up for it (Black Wings by Tom Waits is the ultimate example of this style of song, in my opinion), which pulls the score down a bit. I love the other songs, though.
Regarding the Billy Idol song selections... considering the winning two bands in Round 1 seemed very much pop-metal, I thought I'd try to go the poppy side of Idol's library ... the Vital Idol mixes. Clearly a swing and a miss.
Back to instrumentals it is.

I'm going to back you on this, though. Billy Idol was (is) a real player in a genre that was dominated by poseurs. To Shadow, I didn't listen to the versions Chad sent, but based on memory, I understand what you're saying on all the songs except Mony Mony. That's Billy's style; he was sort of an amalgam; a punk with a shit hot guitar player, but playing music that got played in the clubs. And he more or less pulled it off. I think he's a unique guy and I dig his style. I don't care for ALL his music, but "To Be A Lover" is a GREAT fucking song by any standard.

It's an interesting strategy. I don't know how it's going to work.
I think you're being very kind here.

You don't like Steve Stephens? I have a CD of him, Terry Bozzio, and Tony Levin and it's pretty good. He's got chops.
He must be thinking of someone else. Steve Stevens is absolutely incredible.
By who? He didn't even make Rolling Stone's top 250 list, for example. Have you heard the Black Light Syndrome albums?

Also the bolded part had me :rollin
If you've only heard his stuff with Billy you've only heard one part of the picture. He has a number of solo albums (Atomic Playboys for more of the hard rock side, Flamenco.A.Go.Go for more of his well, flamenco side), Vince Neil's Exposed, various guest spots, and probably other stuff I'm not thinking of offhand. The two albums with Tony Levin and Terry Bozzio, Black Light Syndrome and Situation Dangerous are probably the best cross-section to hear him though.
I'm certainly no expert on Billy Idol's catalog, but there's nothing I've heard that intrigues me even a little about Stevie Stevens.
I know he has this great reputation and all, but ..
Sacul still has a whole day to submit, but let's all post annoyed gifs anyway. I'll start.I've just sent, so

Confusing people with the thread title is one of the best parts of this roulette.:lol
If it helps, you can paste text only (Ctrl+Shift+V) into the hangman spreadsheet and it should work fine.
Hangman probably sometime tomorrow. I think I'm going try setting up my new spreadsheet to generate me a hangman-form list of songs and artists so I can put that directly into the hangman sheet. As is I type stuff out for my stats spreadsheet and again for hangman, which feels inefficient.

I’ll start with the obvious. 8.
9 or 11?
:lol worth noting that 'garbage disposal' is a descriptive term, not a judgmental one. Sort of like how I might describe something as 'disgusting' but that doesn't necessarily mean I don't like it.
You are indeed riffy, Luke.
[6] This feels a little jazzy, but not enough for me to dislike it.can only be one of these 5, evidently. feel like 6 is a good start tho? it's definitely a little jazzy
[9] The dominant influence here isn't the one I expected.
[13] This feels like exactly my kind of music.
[15] The guitar work is amazing, but honestly there's not enough of it.
[18] The stars have aligned at last.
[9] The dominant influence here isn't the one I expected. One of these three, perhaps.

Yeah, but the 'not going to work for me' is definitely a judgmental term. :lol

7 or 18 lol
13 or 18? Nothing else seems to apply...

2 or 3, but hoping for 13.
Mine is number 2.

8 is indeed you, and you're one of the two impression submissions if you want to take another stab at it.
9?
:dunno:

Then, 16? Unless I'm doubling up with an already solved submission, I'm at a loss as to how any of the other still unused impressions fit my songs.
Maybe 12?
oh yeah i forgot you did multiple impressions
uhh 9 because haha 6 9 funney?? idk
14 or 18 then

“First of all, the review was four pages long, and started out calling the album ‘a punishing listen’ and a ‘disgusting, ear-raping assault on the human mind and body,’” Stanza explained. “But then it said the album was ‘definitely an improvement since the band’s last album, Needlejob.’ What the fuck?”
Stanza, a devoted follower of music blogger Jen Blackwell, admitted it was not unlike her to review in such a confusing fashion.
“A few days ago, she Instagrammed a picture of a cleaned plate of hot wings with the caption, ‘This meal was an Abu Ghraib for the taste buds. #delish,’” Stanza continued. “So, yeah… no one knows what the fuck she’s talking about, ever. But goddamn if I don’t respect her craft.”
Fucking nerd.
Fucking nerd.

(https://i.imgur.com/g3ozsum.png)It's a thing of beauty.
Some stats while I'm working on writeups. Average score was indeed the highest so far this round, although a bit more variable. I haven't done the standard deviation for song length yet because it'll take a bit more work, but I think the results should be interesting, since the average length per song is a bit hard to interpret without it. People generally submit between 3 and 4 songs, not particularly surprising. The standard deviation on submission length is pretty high which is interesting. I'm also collecting stats for each user individually, so we'll be able to see whether people tend to vary their submission lengths, or if the deviation comes from you guys having different ranges you mostly stick to.
Potentially I'm affecting the stats by telling you guys some of the results before data collection is completed. The well is poisoned now.
I'd also like to work out some sort of system for tagging genres so I can see if there's any discernible trends in what scores well. That may be an after-roulette task, though, since I feel like it's going to be a bit arduous.
Side note: I have columns for rounds 1-8, but only screenshotted 1-3 because Puppies' submission length, number of songs, and average song length are shown for the others, and I know some of you fuckers will take that and back-calculate what he sent.

anyways yay finally a good score
Fair assessment... It's actually two different vocalists, Raoul does the rap and Jayant does the harsh vocals. Here's a live clip of Dana Dan from their Tokyo show which shows who's doing what, and also the insane energy they bring live...

Soupy, my dear friend. I don’t believe anyone has gotten screwed by my fickle tastes more than you, because yet again you’ve sent me something that feels like it was tailor-made for me, even though I didn’t even know this kind of music existed before I heard it. :lol
It’s got a bit of a folk feel, and a bit of indie, but the overall sound I think is really unique. It’s pretty stripped down, usually just acoustic guitar and drums and then the two vocalists. They’ve both got great voices and they compliment each other really well, and the relatively sparse instrumentation just serves to emphasize the two of them. I may have mentioned this before, but I really, really love dramatic, almost over-the-top vocals, and this just hits that perfectly; they’re like pure drama. Wild Blue Yonder and Inkpot Gods I completely love, but on The Horror and the Wild, for some reason the vocal melodies just don’t click for me at all. It’s genuinely bizarre, because I can listen to it and think ‘this is exactly the kind of thing I should love’ and it just doesn’t work for me. This leads to yet another good-but-not-great score, and again I have to note that the stuff I like here, I’m completely in love with. I don’t know how you’re doing this, but keep it up and eventually it’ll work. :lol
Damn, I'm close to bringing up hind tit. I have to do better this round.

[1] This feels like it's appealing to my love for Between the Buried and Me.
[4] I wish this didn't have vocals.
[7] I love the violin.
[13] This is a style I like, but usually I prefer it either more aggressive or more melodic.
[15] This is more experimental than I expect from them.
[18] This might have the best instrumental track of the roulette.

Sorry, that was a spreadsheet error. For some reason it's lagging on grabbing values from the other sheets I've set up unless I manually refresh the formulas. Dumb. Scores should be fixed now.

To the Airport is absolutely one of my favorite songs by Nickel Creek as well.
I'm pretty sure the mellotron on Bocanada is also a sample of Focus' Eruption. Also, he's got some wonderful vocal melodies, you're just too 'murican to appreciate them :P
Interesting take, I've never heard anyone say that Saiki's vocals bring it down. Oh well.
Sent yo.
I’m also guessing Army was later in their career, because his voice has evened out a bit and works pretty well
I feel like a sizable portion of the music I listen to is from Scandinavia, so I'm not sure this actually holds up. :lol It would be an interesting thing to track with the spreadsheet, though, scores for American groups vs. non-American ones.

My guess is, Rich is going to wake up, have a little chuckle, then change all our usernames and avatars to something unpleasant. Or just bust out the :banhammer:

Congrats Sacul/Shadow Ninja/Puppies/Buddy
My real confusion was why Rich was telling me that I have to send for the next round in Shadow Ninja's roulette, and then responding to his own question about Puppies watching any good movies, as if he was Puppies.
Rich, if I'd just sent Cosmic on it's own would my score have been a 7 or 8? Is this an example of when less could've been more? Glad to see there's no denying the awesomeness of Cosmic though.
And finally a good score for Nickel Creek. They never work when I send them, but Hef has magical powers I don't.In fairness, I have magical power that no one else has.
I remember about 12 years ago a forum member went on vacation and about 50 of us changed our avatar to theirs.Sounds familiar...

A bunch of us went all Winger on Tim during his Winger round.
A bunch of us went all Winger on Tim during his Winger round.
And some of you REALLY committed to it, until extremely recently.
I'll keep that in mind for future rounds. I have a habit of trying to fill the 20 minutes, but I should probably avoid that strategy.

Ninja, I've updated the playlist from the last round with my submissions for this round. Let me know if you need me to send the link again :tup
In all the ariich-cloning shenanigans, I totally forgot that results got posted and I'm supposed to send something. :lol Will send shortly.
Glad you overall liked Fjokra, but yeah can't really explain your dislike of Love, Thrust, Burn, it's probably my favourite of the lot. :lol I get that the chorus isn't anything very interesting, but it's fine and only appears a couple of times in the first of the song which mainly serves to set up the more emotional second half which I love.
Sorry, I got busy watching a movie with a friend, I've just sent.
An Abstract Illusion, probably Wolfking
I was going to send An Abstract Illusion in Rd 2 but scratched it because Fires In The Distance did so sucky. Watch it score big time here. :lolAbstract has a more expansive, progressive sound than Fires so I could see them potentially doing better.

Huh, after a disastrous start, I might actually have a shot now if I can just get Puppies to blow it... (https://i.imgur.com/0bul0dA.gif)This next round will be telling, based on what I sent. We'll see. If it doesn't do well, I'm going to have to change my round 7 submission.

Huh, after a disastrous start, I might actually have a shot now if I can just get Puppies to blow it... (https://i.imgur.com/0bul0dA.gif)
I wanted "Solace" to show more range to their sound. Too much risk if each song sounds too similar. If I'd had 21 minutes and you were a more nondescript host, I'd have considered adding "Wanderer", a sort of jazzy instrumental to give variety. I didn't seriously consider it for obvious reasons, but maybe it might work unexpectedly well, perhaps give it a listen on the side sometime.
Huh, I hadn't noticed the out of tune stuff, to me it all sounds great anyway :lol. I know exactly what to send now.
0:32-0:35 in Sleep Sound is a good example of what I'm talking about, although maybe I'm describing it weirdly. Maybe it's just jazz, which would explain my dislike, but it's just sort of offputting to me melodically.
Ready to hang a man!!

Yup. I absolutely loved seeing him live with his wife. That tour, they had a person who was a comedian talk between songs. What an experience.

Expected a bit more to be honest. Ah well.
Oh hell yeah! Fucking love King Prawn (obviously) and yea, they kinda defy genre. They were part of the early 00s skacore/ska pink scene in the UK, but they mix in hop hop, metal, dub to mention a few.
I really want you to hear Crackhead now, as it's kinda the best exhibition of their many styles.
Litho may actually have an MP3 of it that he can send you, as I sent it to him in his last roulette as well.
Oh my...how bout that?? Fun fact about Hanabie, the high pitched chipmunk is basically Yukina's normal speaking voice (who's like 4'9 on a tall day), and she's the one that does all the growling. The other mid vocal is done by the guitarist. They're insanely fun live. Your assessment should play very nicely into my Rd 7 submission...

That would be really fun to see live I think, her growls are fucking brutal. It kind of reminds me of Kyo from Dir en Grey, who's a small dude but his voice is massive.

Honestly I even tried Amazon because at that point I was annoyed that I couldn't listen to the song anywhere and I figured I could just do a 99 cent mp3 download, and they didn't even have that! I don't know what's in this music that's so essential to keep from American ears.
Wait, was I supposed to get 4 or 5 points? Also, I demand a recount! Also also, I'm going to change my submission for next round.
And I'm glad I went back and looked at your last roulette, I was about to send the 3 exact same songs I sent to you in round 6 last time, which did not go over very well. :lol
Actually, King Prawn was one I was able to find myself. It wasn't available through the normal channels, but I have other ways. But with The King Blues "Everything Happens For a Reason", even those ways failed me (at least in a time frame of trying to manage dozens of other songs for various EPs), so Luke had to e-mail the MP3. But just PM me an e-mail address if you want "Crackhead" and Luke doesn't have it. Just don't ask about the first half of the word, I definitely don't have that.

What the fuck, they were sent two rounds ago. Who's policing this shit?
here's how i can still win:
Awww, I feel like we just became besties.. Praise for my favorite band of late is always a quick way to my heart. Yeah, hidden beneath all that Japanese cuteness and what not, Nemophila has two serious world class shredders in Hazuki and Saki, and the drummer shouldn't be overlooked either, she's got mad skills. Just a great band all around, and really wonderful people to boot.
Gonna take a bit to pick this round in case Soupey totally shits the bed.
I seem to remember you saying different band members play on different albums, is there one that has just the stuff I like, or am I always going to be taking the bad with the good?
Hmm, getting heavily diminishing returns on the relatively harder stuff. Or maybe The Phantom Elite covers Phantom Elite's songs poorly and you heard the wrong versions? Anyway, time to try something that could bomb, or could soar, I'm definitely out of the running at this point.
First Aid Kit is cool, but this is one time where Norway beats the Swedes.Oh I agree, but I should have known they would be right up Shadow's alley.

If you score at least a 7, you cannot be beat unless someone else scores a 10 which has yet to happen in the roulette.
Honestly even if you tank it you've still got a decent shot, depending on how the other high scorers do.

OK. 3 point lead one round left - I think I'm going to play it safe? Although (The) Phantom Elite scoring only a 5 has me a little worried about my selection.
As opposed to Hopolainen who seems to write orchestral scores first and tacks the band and vocals on at the end increasingly these days.

Yes. I kind of assumed he was a household name here, but maybe he isn't?

Yeah, Phantom Elite and Ad Infinitum occupy similar sonic spaces for me, and hopefully not for Shadow Ninja. :lol Ad Infinitum being more symphonic, Phantom Elite a bit more power-prog leaning. I can't remember if I've ever sent them or not in a roulette yet, ariich usually beats me to it.

It was a toss up between Ad Infinitum or Edge of Paradise - I feel Melissa's vocals are a safer bet though. Probably should have just gone with Alestorm though ;D

The top 3 players going into the final round all have high standard deviations (meaning a wide range of different submission lengths) which supports the notion of prioritising quality over quantity.I was right up there too, until I decided to shoot myself in the foot 2 rounds ago, then shoot myself in the other foot last round. :lol
The only trend I see is me sucking. So nothing out of the ordinary :neverusethis:
It seems to imply pretty weak correlation, if any, though. Which is weird because just looking at it I feel like I see a trend, but maybe that's just the illusion having the highest value happen to be on the top right.I dunno, I would say the line is steeper than I might have expected actually. It's not a tight regression but that's to be expected unless you'd expect variety of submission lengths to have a very direct effect on the scores, which would be... weird. :lol But realistically it's a second-order effect that correlates with other characteristics of what people send, for example (as I suggested before) people choosing what they consider the songs you'll like most rather than maxing out the 20 minute limit.
Rich guessed my entree.

I can see myself getting a 5 (like Lizzo with Phantom Elite). Which open it up for one or both of you to win or it could also end in a tie. :D

Stylistically this sounds like a mix of prog metal and 90s-style power metal, which unfortunately kind of puts me at odds with it to start with. I’m much more a fan of the modern, hyper melodic Dragonforce-y power metal than the older stuff. I wasn’t a huge fan of Andre Matos in Avantasia so Angra was never really on my radar of stuff to check out, and I assume this is the replacement guy (Edu Falschi?), and he’s not really doing anything for me either. He either sounds kind of thin and weak on the high stuff or goes into that same Bruce Dickinson thing that I don’t care for. It’s a lot of instrumentally varied than most power metal, that’s the prog metal coming through, but for me that justs makes it less focused and interesting. I like my power big and sing-songy, and outside of a few moments I’m not really getting that here. It’s cool hearing Kai Hansen and Hansi Kursch, of course, but Hansen I find more miss than hit and while Hansi always sounds incredible, I don’t find what he’s doing to be very melodically interesting. (Also I swear I heard the Vanden Plas guy in there at one point)
OK I know you’re kind of disappointed with your performance in the latter half of the roulette, but honestly I’ve just been thrilled that you sent me so much stuff that I absolutely loved, after we never completely clicked in my last roulette. For whatever reason, sort of like Rich, we seem to be kind of incompatible on metal stuff, but everywhere else you were cleaning house. Also, where can I get Monica Heldal CDs? Do they exist?
Thank you Konrad! Glad to play for sure. I mean, I sucked it big time, but it's all good.
What a surprise a 7!! :metal
Glad you enjoyed some of my stuff though, definitely some things there to chew on. Thanks for running, has been fun!

I’m sort of mixed on this one. The first two songs seem to be mostly straight forward pop-ish rock, which is fine, but doesn’t really stand out in any way from a huge swath of that style of music, apart from having some occasional fancy guitar work, which is really nice. Straight To My Heart is much more interesting, with Polyphia-style mathy guitar work jutxaposed with poppy vocals, and then A New Picture goes even further with its drop-on-a-dime switches between riffy shred and a sort of offbeat piano driven pop sound. I’m really into both of those tracks, and then My Breath is somewhere in the middle; stylewise it’s more like the first two, but it’s also just a lot catchier and more fun. So this ends up with a middle of the road score, but a lot of this I’m really into.
Just looking at the submittals and scores from the roulette, you might conclude that female-fronted metalcore was a good way to game the system, but actually 90% of those were just your submissions. :lol I’ve never had you in one of my roulettes before, but you sent a lot of really killer stuff, particularly on the metalcore side, but Gacharic Spin and Bloodywood I liked a lot and loved some, so I’ll be checking them out further as well. At least if I can figure out how to get a Gacharic Spin CD, which has been breaking my brain lately.
wholly unsurprised that the most normal thing i send you scores the highest :lol

Well it's 2am here in the UK and I'm awake to check out these results! (Thanks for making me wait :P). I'd kind off convinced myself I'd cocked up on this final round and the Roulette Supervillain would swoop in and pick me off! So it's a genuinely super cool feeling to actually win one of these things.
Shadow I think you are right I'm not sure we have interacted much if at all in these forums, I generally hover in the Movie/TV area and only ventured out more recently, but as I said in my first submission your banned list contained a ton of stuff that lined with my tastes! So thanks for running this and giving me my first (and I suspect only) win.
Since I became a frontrunner round 5 or 6'ish I've been thinking if I did win I'd put myself forward for the waiting list to run one of these things myself hopefully later in the year. So yeah I guess that's going to happen now! (It'd be pretty cool if you'd join Shadow, no pressure ;D)
As always I enjoy do these roulettes but obviously this one is extra special because I'm the fucking winna bitches!!! So suck it everyone :loser: :loser:

Yeah, Koiai is still finding their sound, but the two guitarist are definitely top notch. Based on what you said, you may want to check out Li-Sa X's first few songs, it's 4 singles with the same guitarist but a different singer, and they're all top notch. All the core bands I sent have at least two or three albums (I think you'll dig the majority of Nemophila's stuff especially, they hit like that on all three albums), Bloodywood just has the one. Gacharic Spin I think has seven, and they're sound is all over the board, they're easily the most diverse and unique band I know of. For their physical copies, CDJapan is your best friend. (unfortunately you'll have to deal with Japanese shipping, which can cost almost as much as the albums). Glad you enjoyed what I send, and thanks for having me!!

Is this the first electronic submission I’ve gotten in this roulette so far? I think it might be. I really love the vocoder effect on the vocals; I think it’s a perfect fit for this kind of music and it gives them such an interesting sound. Whatever Mattered has some (mostly) vocoder-less parts and they’re not really working for me as much, although it does make a nice contrast for when the vocoder comes back. Honestly I really like the core sound here a lot, the only real negative for me is the songs sometimes give a bit too much space before something interesting happens again, particularly on Whatever Mattered where I feel like some spacey synth wandering could probably have been lost without much detriment.
I’m honestly not sure if your method has been sending me stuff you like, or just trawling through hundreds of gigabytes of music for stuff you think will match my tastes, but either way you’ve done a pretty good job of finding stuff I enjoy. Not every submission has been a bullseye, but there have been at least a few (Dirt Poor Robins is still one of the best submissions of the roulette), and you rarely sent me something I wasn’t into at all.

Well someone fucking has to. :lol And you never know, sometimes it might work.
Man, I love Greet Death's distorted guitars, that tone makes me wanna take a shower (in a good way). You might like their EP New Low, it cuts most of the distortion for more clean/acoustic instrumentation and the songs are still great.
Thank you for having me! Yeah, the scores were middling, but you're at least one of the people on here I can send my weird shit to and there's at least a chance you'll like it. :lol
That Chapel Of Disease album is awesome, definitely check it out and their new one from last month. Parannoul is great too, especially To See The Next Part Of The Dream.
For death's dynamic shroud I'd start with the two albums I sent songs from. I'll Try Living Like This is also great though it's definitely a weirder, more atmospheric one. Their fan club release from last month is also one of their best - it's not on streaming but I can hook you up if you want it
Appreciate the recs, and is some kind of blood pact required to take you up on that offer? If so, I'm in. If not, I'm still in but slightly less excited about it. :lol

This is a really fun listen, since I don’t have too much else in my music library that sounds like this. I think it just never quite goes from good into great for me. The songs are a bit too freeform and don’t totally come together, so while there’s bits I really like and I enjoy the listen all the way through, I don’t end up taking too much of it with me. My Oh My is probably the most complete song here, and perhaps not coincidentally is also my favorite. The vocalist is still great and really fun to listen to, and the mandolin + cello makes for such an unconventional but enjoyable instrumental section. The other two songs have a lot of good stuff too, but like I said don’t feel totally coherent to me.
Hef, I’m glad you broke your years-long roulette fast to join this one, even if I did immediately give you a crappy score on the first round. :lol You’ve sent a lot of artists that I not only wasn’t familiar with, but probably hadn’t even listened to anything in their entire genre. That’s one of the best parts of roulettes; people send me stuff I know I never would have heard on my own.My pleasure! I'm glad you liked some of the weird stuff I like!
Fellowship - The Saberlight Chronicles
This is really right up my alley, it's super fun, catchy power metal that's very silly but also endearingly sincere. It's not super varied, but I guess I find I tend to like that in power metal; just stick to the big melodies and fast guitars, and they really nail that. I think you made a good choice in your song selection; Glint and The Saint Beyond the River are pretty clearly the best songs on the album, but there's no real weak points either, and I enjoy this all the way through. I think this is their only album so far, but I definitely grab the next one whenever it's out.
