Title: Your Favorite Album from 1983
Post by: pg1067 on October 23, 2023, 09:19:14 AM
Monster year in the early '80s, and I left out a lot to keep the list to a reasonable length.  What'cha got?

I’ll post my list this afternoon but 1983 was so strong I even like that Marillion album.

So here I am once more
In the playground of the broken hearts
One more experience, one more entry
In a diary, self penned
Yet another emotional suicide
Overdosed on sentiments and pride

Marillion - Script For A Jester's Tear

Maiden.

Script is probably right on its heels.

*Sees 1983 in the title*
*Immediately thinks of Piece of Mind from his favorite band*
*Enters the thread looking for Piece of Mind and votes*
*Leaves thread after having barely read the other options*

Sorry other albums of 1983, one of my favorite albums (the other being Seventh Son) from my favorite band which contains the song (Revelations) that basically got me in love with Bruce Dickinson's voice and in turn with Iron Maiden and in turn with heavy metal just cannot be beaten.

It's really a toss up between Piece of Mind and Script for a Jester's Tear. I went with Script...

Marillion are my favorite band, but I’ve never liked Script apart from Garden Party and He Knows You Know, which are fine but not world rocking songs. Definitely Marillion’s most overrated album IMO.

Will have to look and see what else was released in 1983, but I’m guessing this year will be between Genesis and 90125 for me.

It was a toss-up between Kill Em All and Holy Diver.  I picked Holy Diver based on my listening over the last few years - it's gotten more spins than Kill Em All, but overall, Kill Em All means more to me than any record on the list.

Piece of Mind is up there too, but I hate the last 4 songs.  The first 5 are AMAZING though.

Piece of mind gets my vote. Mostly because three of the last four songs are amazing.  ;D

I can't even begin... this was the first time I started to get out of my "Kiss/Maiden/Ozzy" comfort zone and started to experience different bands and different genres.  As a result, so many of these albums/bands have great memories and played a great role in my life.

Wow, lots of good stuff, much of which I didn't discover until a lot later.  But between Def Lappard, Quiet Riot, Ozzy, and Dio, this was really the year that I discovered hard rock and decided that that was the music for me.  In hindsight, I only wish I had branched out more at that time and not waited to discover some of these great albums.

1.  Def Leppard - Pyromania:  This was the one that did it.  This is the one that made Def Lep my favorite band and made this type of music my favorite music.  The hits were massive and even the deep cuts were songs that demanded repeat listens.
2.  Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind:  I didn't truly discover this album until 2010 when I really began my Iron Maiden exploration, although I knew of it at the time and had heard several songs from it through the years.  This is a true Maiden classic.s
3.  Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon:  I LOVED this album back at the time.
4.  Queensryche - Queensryche:  Tough to rank, being an EP as well as something I didn't really even know existed at the time.  But 3 of the 4 songs are fantastic, and I can excuse Nightrider for it being 1983.  The first version I eventually got also had Prophecy on it, so fair or not, that also elevates it.
5.  Y&T - Meanstreak:  Despite my Y&T fandom, this one does not rank a high.  The good songs are REALLY good.  But there is a lot that just feels like filler.  And Midnight in Tokyo always just felt like an attempt to write another Forever that clearly was not as good.
6.  Journey - Frontiers:  I loved this era of Journey.  Just about every song on this album was great.
7.  Quiet Riot - Metal Health:  I had fun with this band's first two albums before losing interest.
8.  Hall & Oates - Rock 'n Soul Part 1:  These guys were short-lived in my collection, but this was one of two really good albums.
9.  U2 - Under a Blood Red Sky:  Wish we could have gotten an entire live set instead of 8 cherry-picked songs, but the ones that were picked were picked for a reason.
10.  Dokken - Breaking the Chains:  Didn't really get into them until the late '80s, but this isn't a bad effort from them.
11.  Stevie Nicks - The Wild Heart:  I still remember getting this one for Christmas.
12.  Dio - Holy Diver:  Like Y&T farther up the list, this had a small number of really good songs, and a bunch of forgettable stuff.
13.  The Police - Synchronicity:  Wasn't a huge Police fan outside of the hits.  But this album had a lot of said hits.
14.  Bill Joel - An Innocent Man:  A different direction from the previous album, but I liked it.
15.  Siouxsie & the Banshees - Noctourne:  I didn't connect with a lot of the older tunes on this one, but still a great live collection.
16.  U2 - War:  The best songs from this appear on Under a Blood Red Sky and are performed better there, IMO.
Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil

Frontiers right up there for me with Yes and Genesis this year. That’s a great trio or albums.

Jeez, I forgot about Frontiers. That's also a virtual tie with Script and PoM.

Voted for Genesis' self-titled. Love that one from front to back (the much-maligned Illegal Alien has decent music and the lyrics/Phil's Mexican accent are at least amusingly offensive).

Floyd's The Final Cut takes 2nd place and Dire Straits' Twisting by the Pool EP completes the podium.

It's Piece of Mind for me...

Kill'em All is not far behind (my least favorite of 80s Metallica, but a fantastic album, and a classic, nonetheless). Bark at the Moon too.

Then:

The Police - Synchronicity
Journey - Frontiers
Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear (for me too, my favorite Marillion stuff lies elsewhere, but I find this debut has a truly special "mood" of its own)
Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Dio - Holy Diver
Def Leppard - Pyromania

A couple not mentioned:

Simple Minds - Sparkle in the Rain
Warlord - Deliver Us

Damn this was tough. I went with 90125. I could have easily picked Synchronicity, Genesis, Piece of Mind, Frontiers, Diver Down, Pyromania, Sparkle in the Rain, Sports or Good For Your Soul.

Fine selection to choose from and would normally be debating between DIO and Maiden but choosing Pyromania instead, but I'll go with OTHER...

SPORTS Huey Lewis And The News
