A bit of a bleak/quiet year for most of the traditional metal bands. What'cha got?

My Top 10 from 1990 is:

It's between King's X - Faith, Hope, Love, Queensryche - Empire, and Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom for me, but I'm gonna lean towards Faith, Hope, Love.
Another strong contender would be Temple of the Dog - s/t. I also know Jellyfish - Bellybutton would have its supporters around here. A sleeper that I think about half of is brilliant and the other half confuses me a bit would be Prefab Sprout - Jordan: The Comeback.

Damn Yankees is easily the one I still listen to most so I went with that one. Back in the day Empire would have been basically a tie

Poor year. I don't think what we generally class as 90's sound/music started until 91.
Violator, Bosanova, Rust in Peace, Facelift and Ritual de lo Habitual are the only ones I can think off.

Anthrax wins this round. The best Joey album without question. And certainly the best album from this list.

5. Megadeth-Rust In Peace
Damn...not sure how I missed that one when populating the poll. The funny thing is that it's listed after an album from a guy named Alex Masi, and I took note of that because one of my old band's first shows was "closing" for his band. He was the headliner at Gazzarri's in Hollywood, and the club put us on AFTER his band...at like 1:00 a.m. But, yeah, I will hang my head in shame for overlooking Megadeth.

10. Judas Priest-Painkiller
??! Lock up the Wolves is a terrible album. I went to see Dio on that tour, and, in my memory, it looked a lot like when Spinal Tap debuted Jazz Odyssey at the amusement park.

This tells me I need to figure out a better way to populate these polls. It's not metal, and it wasn't a bestseller or high on billboard, so I didn't see it, and I don't really associate it with a particular year. LOVE that album.
I get it, it’s not like Megadeth generate as much discussion as Sinead O’Conner round here :P

Rust in Peace.
This was a near impossible choice - so many great albums that year (Empire, CFH, Painkiller, Tales from the Twilight World). But RIP has been there for me since I discovered Megadeth in the early 90's and I never tire of hearing it.

I have no problem doing a top 10 list for 1990. I just about went broke buying cassettes that year. Although it started off slow, the last half of the year was just an absolute beast in terms of LOTS of great releases. Here are the ones I rated, in order:
1. Queensryche - Empire: One of the greatest albums of all time.
2. Y&T - Ten: I was pleasantly surprised that they could put out something so good so late in their career. After leaning a bit too hard into attempts to draw commercial success on their last two albums, this was a really nice blend of their hard rock roots with the slick studio production and commercialization of the latter half of the '80s that worked really well.
3. Megadeth - Rust in Peace: A true classic in every sense, although I didn't appreciate it until several years later.
4. Suicidal Tendencies - Lights...Camera...Revolution!: I would have missed the brilliance of this album if they hadn't opened for Queensryche.
5. Mother Love Bone - Apple: This and Empire got endless spins from me during my time in Desert Storm. There was such a uniqueness and a melancholy to their music that was perfect for that time.
6. Warrant - Cherry Pie: The vapid '80s lyrics and image, coupled with some of their singles, really distracted from some really solid songwriting on this album.
7. Lynch Mob - Wicked Sensation: This album, coupled with Don Dokken's solo album, really showcased who brought what to Dokken during their '80s run. Lynch really was a fantastic riff and solo composer.
8. House of Lords - Sahara: This one flew under the radar, but had some really solid songwriting and playing.
9. Steve Vai - Passion and Warfare: One of the very few instrumental albums I truly enjoy from start to finish.
10. King's X - Faith, Hope, Love: Discovered this one a few decades after the fact. Really solid album.
11. Depeche Mode - Violator: Probably the last "great" album from them. Really good driving music.
12. Tesla - Five Man Accoustical Jam: To me, all other "unplugged" performances are rated against this one.
13. Cinderalla - Heartbreak Station: Not my favorite from them, but has some good songs. And I appreciate that this was really the album they (or at least Tom) wanted to make.
14. Scorpions - Crazy World: Fairly weak by their standards, but has a few decent songs.
15. Extreme - Pornograffiti: This album is such a mixed bag for me. I don't revisit it often. But there is some solid material on there that warrants a decent ranking.
16. Testament - Souls of Black: Metal classic.
17. Poison - Flesh and Blood: I found this to be kind of forgettable after a few months. But I give them credit for the fact that riffs and parts of songs still just jump into my head to this day.
18. Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze of Glory: Not as good as the full band efforts to date, but was a fun experiment.
19. Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet: They were still angry AND wrote some really accessible tunes.
20. Firehouse - Firehouse: Pure fluff, but in a good way.
21. Stryper - Against the Law: An experiment that ultimately probably would be classified as "NOT a success," but still produced some good music.
22. Don Dokken - Up from the Ashes: Not bad.
23. Ratt - Detonator: Can't tell you a single song off of this anymore, but I got some enjoyment from it back in the day.
24. Prince - Graffitti Bridge: This was Prince "toned down," and that worked to an extent in producing some fun songs.
25. Garth Brooks - No Fences: If country was my thing, this would rank a lot higher, as it has some really solid songs.
26. Madonna - The Immaculate Collection: Not a fan, but she wrote some landmark songs, and this collection had a ton of them, so I feel like I have to give some credit. This and the Dick Tracy soundtrack are the only albums of hers that I actually bought.
27. Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual: For that time in my life, this was a fun album.
Wow, that was a lot. Again, it was a good year in music as far as I was concerned. Things were beginning to change in the industry. The hard rock albums that are lower on my ranking (and some other bands, like Maiden) show that, and show that some bands and a large segment of hard rock in general, were starting to stagnate. But there was also a LOT of really enjoyable music as well. And I'm probably forgetting about an album or two that were obscure enough to not make wikipedia's lists (although I got a couple from memory).

Other for me, as much as I would like to vote for Anthrax and their best album, I have to give it to a band out of left field. I think there was a thread somewhere about AoTY over certain years and this is what I went with for 1990:
Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mining
I don't know what it is about that album, but it just speaks to me. An album I regularly pull out. There is just an amazing feeling to that record. The singles are good for sure, but I especially love the feeling of Stars of Warburton, Mountains of Burma and Bedlam Bridge. Such emotional pieces.

I haven't got into that DCD album as much as some of their others. I just put on Carved In Sand again and I think I've been underrating this one.

Yes, Light...Camera is a great one. Should've added it to my list.
As for Violator - maybe the last great album with their more "classic" sound, but I have a special fondness for Songs and Faith and Devotion

For a while there, it looked like they could really break into next level popularity, at least in Europe. But yeah, the album for me is the sweet spot between their earlier gothic rock sound and a more poppy approach.

After Alan Wilder left their albums became less cohesive, but Gore is such a great songwriter and Gahan such a great vocalist that pretty much all of them still have at least a few great songs.
Carved in Sand might be my favorite The Mission album. Yeah, that song is standing out more to me now. Almost like a more atmospheric, more melancholic U2, actually. God's Own Medicine is my favorite of theirs, that one is just incredible, particularly one of the special editions with the acoustic intro for "Love You To Death" (fun to play on guitar as well).

"I Saw Red" is such a good song, and I vaguely recall "Uncle Tom's Cabin" being decent.

I never really got into them, but I saw them twice and they were a great live band. Saw them in a club and an arena as opening acts and they owned both stages.

I didn’t even think about Jane’s Addiction. That might get my vote.
Although that reminds me that Primus Fizzle Fry came out in ‘90. So yes…change my vote to other and my official vote is for Primus!!

I vaguely recall sitting in my chair for Megadeth (while everyone else was standing on theirs) and balancing my checkbook. Why I brought my checkbook into a metal show is something I can't explain. I enjoyed it better when Slayer opened for Priest on the Ram It Down tour.

Wasn't The Clash of the Titans tour going on that year too? The European line-up had Slayer, Megadeth, Testament and Suicidal Tendencies, I believe. I remember my brother (who's older than me) was planning to go with a couple of friends (who were serious metalheads, while he most definitely wasn't) when the tour came to Italy. Can't quite remember why he even wanted to go, but eventually he didn't. The friends who went told us the mosh pit during the Slayer set was one of the most terrifying things they experienced at a concert :biggrin:

That was 91 in the US. Lineup was Slayer/Anthrax/Megadeth and a then just up and coming Alice In Chains. Saw that tour May 31st 1991 in Spokane WA.

Nick, Judas Priest toured in late '90/early '91 with Megadeth and Testament opening. I saw them on Dec 7th, 1990 in Providence.
In the summer of 1991, Megadeth played with Slayer, Anthrax, and special guests Alice In Chains on the Clash Of the Titans tour, modelled after the European Chash tours. Saw this show on July 6th in Mansfield, MA.
Judas Priest co-headlined the Operation Rock n Roll tour that summer with Alice Cooper, along with Motorhead, Metal Church and Dangerous Toys. Saw this show on Aug 14th in Mansfield.

Went Rust in Peace on this one. Seasons In the Abyss and Persistence of Time are close, but Rust edges them out. This was a great year for thrash though. Kreator released Coma of Souls and Testament has Souls of Black too.

Empire gets my vote, and Rust In Peace is my #2.

To circle back to my list, I just want to say that my top 15 are an indication of a VERY strong year of music for my personal tastes. Just an incredible year. And the top 3 out of that list are SO strong that that alone would have made it an amazing year. Three incredibly solid, landmark albums that don't stay out of my listening rotation for very long. But Empire is one of those rare, truly special albums for me that, all by itself, demands the consideration of "this might just have to be one of my all-time favorite bands."

1990, the year I graduated high school. An interesting year, for sure. For me, a lot of really good albums were released, but I'm not sure how many I would classify as "great". Some of my favorites that aren't in the poll include
