Assuming you mean the BAI part that starts around 8:09
yeah I don't hear it. Send Her my Love is a great song though

Listened.
What am I listening for?

Frontiers is a great album. Only The Young (from those sessions and pulled from the album at the last minute) is on any given Sunday my favorite Journey song.
-
I hear what he’s referring to. The chord progression behind the solo in the Journey song is similar to BAI at 6:09. Would definitely not call the solo itself “ripped from” the Journey song.
-
No.
-
I hear all kinds of Neal Schon influence in JP's playing. Doesn't mean he's ripping off Journey. lol
-
Nah.....
One of my favourites from Journey though.
-
I don't hear it either. If anything, JP is channeling his inner Alex Lifeson on that solo in BAI but he ain't ripping anything off.
On aside note, I love me some Rick Beato! :metal
-
Send her my love is probably my favourite Journey’s song.
And this is all i have to say regarding this thread.

Speaking of DT doing Journey, other than "Mother Father" and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", has the band ever covered any other Journey songs?
-Marc.
-
Not live, but they played Separate Ways and LTS when they auditioned James in 1991, as he mentioned during the concert I attended on the I/W 2.0 tour in 2017 (as I like to call it)

Breaking All Illusions, obliviously. :P

I'm pretty oblivious to the similarities, that's for sure. ;)

That's a cool nugget. James also did a recording of Separate Ways for a Japanese compilation album I have. I think it's called "Rock Music" or something..

Never knew this existed, but it is on Youtube https://youtu.be/11-Up3DOHsE

Both Only the Young and Ask the Lonely are tremendous and should have made the album, but alas. My copy has them as bonus tracks anyway so I guess now they sort of are on it (I also really like Only Solutions which I don’t think was written during the album sessions but I could be wrong).
-
That one originally appeared on the sountrack to Tron in 1982.

Right, but I think it might have been recorded separately from the album (but maybe not).
-
Not quite sure, but IIRC it actually was recorded during the Frontiers sessions

It probably was. They just decided to peel those three tracks off to sell to movies.

I don't know specifically about Only Solutions, but the other two were ON early versions (not official releases, but works in progress) of the album and were pulled at the last minute. They were recorded in the same sessions as the rest of the album just used elsewhere.

Apparently it's called "Rock Super Stars Vol. 3" (https://www.discogs.com/release/15287705-Various-Rock-Super-Stars-Vol3-Hard-Rock-Heavy-Metal-Mega-Hits-In-80s), but it's hard to find online, since there is a more common US release called "Rock Superstars Vol. 3" that pops up and is completely different.

sorry champ, i don't hear it!! :)
-
Anyone else think it's odd that the OP never returned to this thread to explain himself?
-
i still believe that that solo was the seed for BAI solo

This. It's a similar sound and progression with a similar melody for sure. But I would not say "ripped".

You know, I'm surprised this thread keeps popping up.
I decided to give it a focused listen, and fifteen minutes later, um, yeah, I really don't hear it.
I'm sorry, my man, you do you, but unless Petrucci mentions it in an interview, I think I'm gonna keep on assuming that these two songs are completely unrelated.

If there is to be a thread about a band who has ripped off other bands and gotten away with it, there should be one explicitly dedicated to Metallica. Especially those early albums. There are plenty of youtube videos out there that detail it really well....and....it's pretty shocking how blatant they were with stealing the rhythms and themes from other bands, but they were smart about it....it was typically 'lesser' known bands but it was still obvious plagiarism.
