Title: The BAND-MAID thread v.Po!!
Post by: lonestar on August 03, 2023, 09:22:32 AM
I think I've gotten enough people into these girls to warrant their own thread. The self described impossibly hard rocking maid band from Japan about to kick off their US tour at Lolapalooza. They got a solid ten year discography and aside from Babymetal are probably the most commercially successful of the J-metal bands.

They just released a 10th anniversary 2 disc best of album, that's on spotify as well as a new song, Shambles. For those unfamiliar, these girls kick serious ass, belying their maid ethos....

Shambles - https://youtu.be/lf0mQOiu8J8 (https://youtu.be/lf0mQOiu8J8)

Best of Vol 1 - https://open.spotify.com/album/1y1xNiR0afPdNSpCkq2FBT?si=qZ6NZG-uTAmNp36iahB-2Q&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A1y1xNiR0afPdNSpCkq2FBT (https://open.spotify.com/album/1y1xNiR0afPdNSpCkq2FBT?si=qZ6NZG-uTAmNp36iahB-2Q&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A1y1xNiR0afPdNSpCkq2FBT)

I must say that your incessant spamming of them is starting to pay off.  I'd actually already sampled a bit of them before I rejoined here, but I occasionally keep checking out more songs here and there, and I'm certainly intrigued.  You should have been in my roulette.  :p  By the time V2 rolls around they'll probably be banned.

They're such a consistent band for sure. And their love shows are an absolute blast, they have such great chemistry together. And no lie, they are probably the best sounding live band I've come across, just fucking pristine sound, and that seems to be the report from every other show friends have seen.

Actually if anyone is interested in seeing their performance at Lolapalooza, it'll be streamed on Hulu at 1:45pm EST tomorrow.

One of the things I find most interesting about them is that it appears that two of them might trade off lead vocals at times.  That's quite a rare occurrence in anything at all approximating their style and format, though one of my favorite bands (All Ends) does it.  Does BAND-MAID do this a fair amount, and if so, what are the songs that best exemplify it?

I'd say Saiki handles about 80% of the lead duties, there are a few songs that Miku handles alone(Sayonakidori is a good example) and occasionally Miku will take a verse or two, but she's primarily backup and Saiki leads.

It's a great story actually, it's Miku's band, she came up with the idea while working in a Maid cafe, and through luck/fortune hooked up with three premiere musicians in Akane (DR), Misa (BS) and Kanami (GT/songwriter). They added Saiki when the label/mngt thought they needed a vocalist with a lower register, they got her to agree before they told her about the maid outfits, and even then she almost said fuck it lol. Miku didn't even play a lick of guitar when she joined the band, but has been taught through the years by Kanami and is now a decent rhythm player.

About 30 minutes in and an lovin' it all...

It's neat to also see how the crowd gradually comes in and starts jamming hard to them.

I'm also not too familiar with the song names, nor the names of the girls, but the part where the bass player and guitarist do that duel was awesome.

It just makes me smile to know, that crowd did not know the awesome spectacle they were gonna witness.

Yeah, I'm not generally into costume gimmicks, although it admittedly seems to work for boosting popularity.  But it probably holds back some bands of the type and others from getting more earnest consideration from more "serious" music fans.  *coughGhostcough*   :corn

Ah yes...the Fan Maids...there's a few at every show. Not sure I have the legs to pull it off man. The real fans are the ones in the Dawn Patrol. There's a few guys who hit every show of the last tour...that's 16 shows over a four week span. And they were in line at dawn for each one. That's commitment/obsession. Turns out there really solid dudes, I've become friends with a few of them, and one even hooked my brother up with a free VIP ticket for the Nemophila show in SF. He does that for each show he goes to, buys an extra just in case.

Also, re-watching it and I gotta say Miku's Zemaitis is such a gorgeous guitar.

Why?

Because they don't need them. They clearly have the chops. And only three of them wear them. It's not even like it's a full band thing.

They don't need the gimmick. I don't know, it just comes off as childish to me.

Like...if they want to do the encore with them on..ok, or the first song and then rip them off. That'd be fine too. I wouldn't call them distracting, but I find them unnecessary, and they don't add to the experience for me. It's really doing them a disservice to say..."oh check this band out. They're really good and they dress like maids", because you really can't leave that part out.

Well, they won't be ditching them anytime soon, sounds like something you're going to just have to work through. The rest of their fan base is pretty cool with it lol

All the Japanese bands have a style or wardrobe gimmick, lovebites has their goth gowns, Nemophila has their sloppy grunge look, Hanabie has whatever the hell style they do (which is adorable but I have no word for it lol). It's just the thing for them.

There are certain types of potential fans who are always going to struggle with visual gimmicks, whether it's KISS, Twisted Sister, Behemoth, Slipknot, Ad Infinitum, etc.  I think I myself have a tendency to write off bands due to it, so it's something I've had to wrestle with.

I don't get it. Men dressed as maids?

I don't think it's a real detriment if you're a really big fan of the music. And I can certainly look past it in some cases. I mean Band Maid's music certainly stands on it's own. As did Twisted Sister's (for the 1st three albums anyway), and Kiss has tons of great music.

I personally think it's ridiculous to have two guys dressed up as Ace and Peter. It's basically half Beatlemania at that point. I had no problem with Kiss in the 80's, but they want to make a buck selling this "show" so all the power to them.

Great quote from the Rolling Stone review of their performance yesterday...

Quote
They lured curious onlookers into the fold when highlights like “Domination” and “Don’t You Tell Me” got huge reactions from the crowd, but it was the bass solo-versus-guitar solo duels mid-song that got the biggest cheers. This is what those guys in Guitar Center think their ridiculous riffing sounds like. Turns out it’s done best, and most effortlessly, by women in black-and-white maid dresses and frilly hair-pieces as they smile ear to ear. –N.C.

In answer to Tim's struggle with their Maid outfits, they shoot for that contrast... That they can be adorably cute women in maid outfits and still kick ass.

I'd personally say about 20% of their work hits at that level, that full frontal hard rock approach, though Thrill along with Domination, Warning, Don't You Tell Me, Play, Puzzle, Hate?, and Warning stand a bit above the rest for me.. When you get to it, just hit their recently released Best Of dual CD's, most of their best stuff is on their. Also, I can send you the playlist I made Tim as well.

One thing I have a problem with, generally for these Japanese bands, are the vocals. Not sure it's just reserved for female fronted bands either. After a while, my ears get fatigued with it.

I have felt that while trying to take in full albums by Band Maid, and even Lovebites, a band which musically, I like more. But I do have to say that I prefer the singer from Band Maid to Lovebites.

Speaking of that, I just did a dedicated run through of Maid In Japan, their first album. Musically, it's more basic when compared to their later works, which makes sense. In a way, it's very consistent in a way that in some very rudimentary listens, their later works could benefit from. In the end, that may not be a totally fair assessment based on the dedication of the listens, but I do plan to go through each album.
The other thing about the first album is how consistent the vocals are. She has a really good voice, and there aren't the weird inflections present that many Japanese vocalists, male and female, have.

Musically, it reminded me of very early Blondie, and....that's a good thing.

Really liked Evergreen and Bye My Tears.

I'm the same way with the vocals from Lovebites, and to a lesser extent Mary's Blood, they just don't click with me, they almost sound like they're always trying to oversing everything if that makes sense. Saiki (Band Maid) has just a natural, pure voice. The main reason Nemophila is my favorite is Mayu's vocals, it's just such a unique sounding voice that really stands out among the crowd.

It's funny you make that comment about their first album, they were shooting for a pop rock approach. It was on the second album, Brand New Maid, of which Thrill is the lead single, that they settled for the hard rock sound. The music video for Thrill went viral, garnering 1.5 million views in a few days, and the rest is history so they say.

I don't want to dig deeper into them right now with the roulette going, but since you sent me Thrill (which I LOVE), about how much of their stuff is on that level?

I'd personally say about 20% of their work hits at that level, that full frontal hard rock approach, though Thrill along with Domination, Warning, Don't You Tell Me, Play, Puzzle, Hate?, and Warning stand a bit above the rest for me.. When you get to it, just hit their recently released Best Of dual CD's, most of their best stuff is on their. Also, I can send you the playlist I made Tim as well.

Send me that playlist and I will also look out for the Best Of.

I seriously cannot stop watching this bit...talk about announcing your presence with authority. The girls knew how big this performance was for them, and man did they fucking deliver.

Tickets for their Anaheim show is starting to come down in price and get to the point of me considering purchasing one.  I may pull the trigger.  Never thought I would have the chance to see two weird gimmicky, but extremely talented, Japanese bands, this year, but here we are.

So I just saw a post in the fan group where the opener Starcrawler at the Denver show was disparaging the BM fans...telling the Starcrawler fans to push their way past the 'creepy old dudes' and that the BM fans needed to 'turn their hearing aides up'...

I'm thinking, if you're performing for a crowd where 99% of them are not your fans, you may want to try a little kindness as opposed to fucking insulting them. Fucking stupid.

Jesus fuck whoever thought they'd be a good opener for BM was clueless on the fan base. This has Livenation decision written all over it...thank god they'll be off the tour by the time my show comes around.

OH GOD.  They were opening for Band-Maid?  I saw them open for Bush last January.  They were terrible.  This was one of these times where after the set was over, everyone had that feeling of, "WTF was that?"  and not in a good sense.  I don't want to endure that again in Anaheim.

Miku in Salt Lake City, when she finds out KFC started there.... (I checked, the first KFC was in fact in SLC)

My buddy is getting in line at 4am Monday.

There's already guys eyeballing the Seattle venue for tomorrow's show. They're so fucking hardcore  :lol

Ok...some longer thoughts now that I've gotten some sleep...

Arrived at the venue at 9am, and there were already about 40 people in line, BM fans are obsessive that way, they even have their own merch for the Dawn Patrol. 10 hours in 100 degree Sacramento sun isn't ideal, but we survived with a shit ton of water and the parking lot being right next to us so we could chill in our cars at times. Got into the venue and the show started promptly. And the girls jumped into four ripper tracks right out of the gates, with Domination leading off and the ever amazing Play as well. A brief hello from Miku and they blasted through four more tracks. Another longer MC from the other girls, a quick q&a session and some minor shenanigans all to take a brake and give Miku's voice a rest. Next were six tracks, including some of their more mellow stuff in the middle where the crowd surprised the band by all having glowsticks and made a sea of multi-colored lights. It was obvious Saiki was really touched by this and was a very cool moment. This part ended with the ripper duo of Dice and Hate?, with the now infamous duel between Misa and Mincho. Then came the long MC period where Miku does Omajinai time, this is a traditional part of the show and is always hilarious in how the other girls troll the shit out her during it, it was about 20 minutes, and led right into the final six songs finishing off with the live debut of their latest single Shambles.

The girls are easily one of the tightest sounding live bands out there, not a note is missed, and Saiki's leads are absolutely massive, she's a true force of nature. I managed to score a Miku pick, and a fantastic time all around. Definitely in contention for show of the year.

Here's the interchange and ending of Dont You Tell Me- https://youtu.be/wvhTv8VXcYk (https://youtu.be/wvhTv8VXcYk)

For anyone interested in seeing Band-Maid in Anaheim today, TickPick has tickets as low as $22.00 all GA, as of right now.  I suggest if you are on the fence, and in the OC or LA area, I say go ahead and nab it.  I pulled the trigger a little too early yesterday.  I could have saved $20.00 if I bought it today.  Could have used that money for parking.....  Nonetheless, I'm excited for this.

Interesting, the tix for Sac never dropped, seems more LA people were trying to make a buck off the success of their last tour.

No matter, they're gonna kick ass man...be sure to bring your BIG BIG VOICE PO!!!

Yeah, the show as pretty good.  Place was pretty packed.  I think when I got inside, the floor area was already 70% full and there was a long line behind me as well.  Was lucky to land a spot at the section near where the soundboard was.  2nd row behind the rail of that section.  Crowd was good.  No different than the crowd I was at for the Disturbed/Breaking Benjamin show last month, just with more people wearing Anime/Manga shirts and maid outfits.  Glad I attended this show and hope they come back to these parts again.

Nice, glad you enjoyed it. Band Maid fans are pretty unique, the glasses they put on during one of the breaks were given to them by the fans who raised the money in one of the groups. Each show usually has some unique event inspired by the fans, at Sacramento one guy brought a few hundred glowsticks to pass out and hold up during Daydreaming, Saiki was visibly moved by the gesture. They're a great group of people, and it was a blast hanging with them all day in line. I think their next tour I'll probably try to do a few shows.

Their next tour may be a spell though, they haven't touched Europe since before the pandemic, so that region is overdue, but they do love touring the states, so hopefully we get at least one tour next year.

There was a bonus documentary that came with their Tokyo Garden DVD, which followed them through their US tour last year. It's long, but it's a really good look at how tight these girls are with each other and their fans. Not sure how long the powers that be at BM will let it be up.

So reports are that on their recent run of shows leading up to the big Yokahama Arena show that culminates the 10th anniversary tour, they've randomly dropped 5 new songs, I'd fully expect an album announcement any time now.

BAND-MAID played their big 10th Anniversary show last night at the Yokohama Arena... early statistics are that they played a 33 song set that spanned over 3.5 hours.

It of course is slated to be released as a DVD next spring.

Seems they put on their formal outfits for the occasion...
