Title: Craft Your "Dream" DT Setlist - Consisting only of material you haven't seen
Post by: Skeever on July 17, 2023, 12:12:05 PM
Also - it can be no longer than 100 minutes.
This is not an "Evening With" situation - there have to be some limits or it won't be fun, right?

Here's mine:

- In the Presence of Enemies pt. I
- Innocence Faded
- The Mirror
- Lie
- Barstool Warrior
- S2N
- These Walls
- Surrounded
- Learning to Live

Encore:
- As I Am

The Glass Prison
Afterlife
Sacrificed Sons
At Wit's End
Fatal Tragedy
Endless Sacrifice
Out of Reach
In the Name of God
------
Octavarium

The studio versions come to about 20 seconds over 100minutes, but if you're being picky, the end of AWE wouldn't have the little extra bit that's on the album.

Could have just listed my favourites in order that I haven't seen, but that would have only been about 5 or 6 songs  :lol So I tried to make it a little bit more balanced by looking further down my song rankings, though I've never been great at coming up with a flowing setlist.

I haven't been to the last 2 tours for a variety of reasons, but I'd jump at the chance to see a set like that.

I've only seen them once and they did all of Images, so sadly I won't be able to pick anything from that. They also did The Dark Eternal Night, The Bigger Picture, Hell's Kitchen, The Gift of Music, Our New World, As I Am, Breaking All Illusions and A Change of Seasons. So not being able to pick anything from those, here's a somewhat mixed set I would go for that tries to go for both quality but also trying to cover a multitude at least a handful of albums:

In the Presence of Enemies Part 1
The Mirror
Lie
Beyond This Life
Barstool Warrior
Misunderstood
Erotomania
Voices
Fatal Tragedy
---
Octavarium

I'll play:

The Root of All Evil 8:08
Peruvian Skies 6:44
Lost not Forgotten 10:11
Panic Attack 7:17
Constant Motion 6:56
Blind Faith 10:21
Surrender to Reason 6:34
S2N 6:22
Forsaken 5:36
Vacant 2:57
Stream of Consciousness 11:16

Encore:
In the Name of God 14:14

Total music: 96:36

I know it's weird to end the main setlist with an instrumental, but hey, a man can dream right?

EDIT: Never mind, just saw the 100 minute part.

Misunderstood
Hell's Kitchen
Lines in the Sand
Transcending Time
Awaken the Master

Consisting only of material you haven't seen

That makes for a pretty significant limitation, and I'm not quite sure how to handle it with respect to SDOIT.  I've seen ATC, Shell, ATCR and LT/GF.  However, if we buy into the fiction of SDOIT being a single song, have I seen that song because I've seen some (more than half) of it?  Or have I not seen it because I haven't seen the whole thing?  I guess I'll just consider the parts as separate songs (as I do anyway).

Songs that I haven't seen that I REALLY want to see:
- Anna Lee (5:51)
- SDOIT Overture (6:50)
- War Inside My Head (2:08)
- The Test That Stumped Them All (5:03)
- Wither (5:25)
- Behind the Veil (6:52)
- S2N (6:21)
- Transcending Time (6:25)

That's only 44:55, so I have to come up with another 55:00 of material!

We'll go with:

- Light Fuse and Get Away (7:23)
- You Not Me (4:58)
- Raise the Knife (11:40)
- Vacant (2:57)
- Beneath the Surface (5:26)
- Surrender to Reason (6:34)
- A Life Left Behind (5:49)
- Out of Reach (4:04)
- Viper King (4:00)

That gets me to 97:46.

If I can have the entirety of SDOIT, then ditch LFAGA, YNM, RTK and Vacant.

Glass Prison
Surrender to Reason
Hell's Kitchen
Lines in the Sand
Out of Reach
This Dying Soul
Transcending Time
Blind Faith
Change of Seasons

Encore: Learning to Live (I feel like I have seen this but I can't remember - anyone know if they've played this live in the MM era?)

It's possible I've seen a couple of these and have just forgotten!

With the 100-minute limit I wouldn't get to see too many songs, but with how amazing these songs are, that's fine by me. Assuming I calculated correctly, this should be about 97-98 minutes.

False Awakening Suite
The Root of All Evil
Erotomania
Voices
The Silent Man
Blind Faith
Trial of Tears
The Count of Tuscany
Octavarium
Title: Re: Craft Your "Dream" DT Setlist - Consisting only of material you haven't seen
Post by: Jamesman42 on July 17, 2023, 06:57:02 PM
Metropolis Pt. 1 (9:32)
The Silent Man (3:47)
A Change of Seasons (23:08)
The Glass Prison (13:52)
Solitary Shell (5:47)
Endless Sack of Rice (11:23)
Octavarium (24:00) (still sad that I saw them on this tour and they weren't playing it)
Bridges in the Sky (9:30 because we are cutting the intro)

About 100.5 minutes - not sure what order but I wouldn't care much. Just space out the epics.

With all the songs I want to see that I haven't seen, the total time would be about 2:15:00 if I included them all... :biggrin: With the 100 minute limit this is what I came up with...

1. The Enemy Inside
2. These Walls
3. Blind Faith
4. Erotomania/
5. Voices
6. Misunderstood
7. Stream of Consciousness
8. Scarred

Encore
9. Octavarium

It was hard trying to keep it within the time limit while also including Octavarium.

5: Honor Thy Father
6: In The Presence Of Enemies Pt. 2

These Walls
Lines in the Sand
The Great Debate
Take Away My Pain
Only a Matter of Time
In the Name of God
——--(encore)———
Octavarium

Time: 1 Hour 39 Minutes

Honorable Mentions(songs I was torn about exchanging for others)
At Wit’s End
Transcending Time
Another Hand/The Killing Hand
Blind Faith
Stream of Consciousness
Don’t Look Past Me(I was so close to seeing this one too. They removed it from the set a couple shows before I saw them. Such an underrated gem of a song.)

I also wanted to point out that my set list includes 8 songs - the perfect amount to be played when playing Octavarium  ;D

Genuinely surprised at the number of people who've not seen Octavarium :omg: *checks setlist.fm* Fuck me... it was only played on the Octavarium tour?! I don't think I ever realised. I guess I've been relatively lucky since I've seen it three times.

Some lovely setlists being shared! Not sure I can be bothered to work out what I've not seen and put a setlist together :biggrin:

I've actually got a full house on that one. What a show it would be. Although I'd be gutted if Jordan ad libbed the piano break in Blind Faith again!

Yeah that is an excellent set. I think this thread sets one thing straight: we all have a disease - and the only cure is Octavarium live. Please DT, I beg of thee,  don't retire without first touring this beautiful song again. Even if it has to be downtuned a bit to help James, I must see it live and I know the fans would go insane if the opening orchestral bit began after the band members began coming back on stage for an encore. Pretty please Octavarium  :blush :(

I technically saw Octavarium during the Prog Nation Schmedly Wilcox Medley. I don't really count that as having seen the whole song though. It's my favorite DT song and I'd love to hear it live just once before they decide to retire(and who knows whenever that ends up being).

Let's see, for me:

24/10/2005 Hammersmith, London, UK
26/10/2005 Wolverhampton, UK
1/4/2006 Radio City Music Hall, New York, US

Perhaps they really do not want to play it again for one reason or another. Have they ever implied they'll play it again?

1. The Glass prison
2. This dying soul
3. Take the time
4. The Gift of music
5. Our new world
6. The Silent man
7. Beneath the surface
8. Awaken the master
9. The Ministry of lost souls
10. Only a matter of time
11. Learning to live
---
12. Octavarium

This should be a nice set of two hours.

I think I remember Jordan saying a while back that he loves the song and wants to play it again at some point. I don't think there's any reason why they couldn't, but they're probably saving it for a special occasion.

I’ve seen them live on every US tour since 2014 (besides the I&W 2017 tour, which was a major bummer to miss), so I’ve gotten to see a large portion of their discography, but a lot of what’s missing are very important songs.

1. The Glass Prison
2. This Dying Soul
3. Just Let Me Breathe
4. Take the Time
5. Afterlife
6. Blind Faith
7. Lines in the Sand
8. Surrender to Reason
——————————————————
9. Honor Thy Father
10. Only a Matter of Time
11. Misunderstood
12. Behind the Veil
13. Constant Motion
14. Panic Attack
15. The Great Debate
16. Ytse Jam
17. Under a Glass Moon

18. Metropolis Pt. 1 (It will be very funny and sad if this is one of the songs I somehow never get to see live lmao)

Comes out to 158 min, which is only about 5 min or so longer than some of their most recent evening with shows. If I even cross half of these songs off the list, I’ll be very grateful.

Encore: Learning to Live (I feel like I have seen this but I can't remember - anyone know if they've played this live in the MM era?)

They obviously played everything from I&W on the I&W and Beyond Tour in 2017.  They also played it at a handful of festival shows in Europe in the summer of 2011.

Yep, they rotated Learning to live and Metropolis in the summer of 2011. I caught the show with Metropolis, which was great, I got to see my favorite song. Unfortunately, though, to this day, I've never witnessed the epic F#.

3. Just Let Me Breathe
4. Take the Time
5. Blind Faith
6. Lines in the Sand
7. Surrender to Reason

That got me wondering whether I've ever seen Wither live and it turns out I have:

10/10/2009 Wembley Arena

A Nightmare to Remember (with Mikael Åkerfeldt - this video at 6m 25s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNTGn_MYaqg)
The Mirror
Lie
Keyboard Solo
Prophets of War
Wither
Act II: Scene Seven: I. The Dance of Eternity
Drum Solo (featuring Martin Axenrot from Opeth)
Take the Time
The Count of Tuscany

Didn't realise I'd ever seen Prophets of War live. Turns out there's a nice recording of it, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cb1GG22Xfo Nice performance by James.

I’m gonna do an Evening With setlist since that’s how I prefer my Dream Theater shows. And yes some of these most likely will never be played live.

The Glass Prison
Answering the Call
Innocence Faded
Surrender to Reason
Panic Attack
Instrumedley
Lines in the Sand

Afterlife
Constant Motion
S2N
Vacant
Stream of Consciousness
Beneath the Surface
The Best of Times

Octavarium

It's really the only song I haven't seen and which, if I never get to see it, I'd be truly disappointed (kinda like Jacob's Ladder and Losing It with Rush, which I finally got to see at their last concert).
Title: Re: Craft Your "Dream" DT Setlist - Consisting only of material you haven't seen

This is a fun and interesting challenge, especially given that I’ve seen DT 55 times since 1993, and I’ve only missed a few tours, including the entire AVFtTotW tour cycle. As such, I’ve seen all of WDaDU, IaW, Awake, SFaM, SDoIT, ToT, 8v, ADToE and TA, so none of those albums can be represented, and I’m only missing only a few tracks from each of the other albums aside from d/t and the latest one.

So given the stipulations from the OP, I’ve created 2 setlists - one only focusing on songs that *have* been played live but I haven’t seen, and one that includes the songs that have never been played live.

Setlist 1 (using only songs that have been played live)
1. The Alien
2. The Bigger Picture
3. Fall Into the Light
4. The Way It Used to Be
5. Answering the Call
6. Don’t Look Past Me
7. Wither
8. Hell’s Kitchen
9. At Wit’s End
10. March of the Tyrant
11. Awaken the Master
~~~encore~~~
My 20th anniversary of DT shows last weekend....so there's not too many choices available
Erotomania
Tear Down These Walls
Build Me Up, Break Me Down
The Bigger Picture
Room 137
Encore
Viper King
time ...  under 35 minutes
(wish I could 'see' 'Misunderstood' again....the mood created from the blue lights during the first 3 1/2 minutes was perfection)
This is a fun and interesting challenge, especially given that I’ve seen DT 55 times since 1993, and I’ve only missed a few tours, including the entire AVFtTotW tour cycle. As such, I’ve seen all of WDaDU, IaW, Awake, SFaM, SDoIT, ToT, 8v, ADToE and TA, so none of those albums can be represented, and I’m only missing only a few tracks from each of the other albums aside from d/t and the latest one.
What about songs like Eve, or even a jam like Bombay Vindaloo? Any consideration for those, or have you seen them?
Great question - actually I saw TLF and Eve at my very first show, but I never did get to see any of the other instrumental jams from the 1992/1993 tours. So Moon Bubbles, Slow Motion, Bombay Vindaloo and Barfbag would all be options that I could include, and since I'm a big fan of both Bombay Vindaloo and Barfbag, I probably could alter the setlists to include those two although I'm too lazy to do so at the moment.  :biggrin:
Hmm, when I see DT next week I believe it will be my 50th show since 1994, so like Setlist Scotty, the below will mostly consist of deep cuts.  And I won't include tracks that will become ineligible as of 7/25/23.
Behind the Veil
Room 137
Cover My Eyes
You Not Me
Transcending Time
Wither
Surrender to Reason
Vacant
Anna Lee
Disappear
Encore (featuring MP)
Raw Dog
Repentance
Best of Times
Definitely not a setlist that would have wide appeal, but I’d love it!  I tried making a setlist with only songs DT has played live, but a good chunk of it ended up comprised of the Majesty demo, Moonbubbles and Canadian Rap.  Just didn’t feel right.
Raw Dog has to be the worst song in their catalog, but I would be cheering if they started playing it at a show I was attending.
Both Barfbag and Bombay were only ever played in Europe (and Bombay only a handful of times), right?  Didn't some of Barfbag turn into the original Met2?
I saw Moon Bubbles, TLF and Eve during the first handful of shows I saw.  The only one of those I care for is Eve.  It worked well as a "let's slow things down" moment in those early shows.
I saw Eve in the 1998 holiday shows and it was a pure gem.  Sadly, I've never seen Kevin Moore play live, but that tour in 1993 was especially special for those that got to a show during that era.
It's funny that we don't always appreciate this stuff as much as we "should" because we don't know what's going happen in the future.  My first two DT shows were in November 1992.  The first was at a tiny club where my own band had played a couple years earlier (the Marquee in Westminster, CA).  It's now a strip club (https://thelibrarygc.com/) .  We saw them 11 days later at another tiny club called Rhythm Cafe in San Diego (also no longer there).  Another strip club connection:  there was one right across the street, and I think we spent an hour or so there before the show.  We got the entirety of I&W plus OAMOT, Ytse Jam, Moon Bubbles, and Another Hand/TKH (not enough songs to rotate set lists yet!).  In between, the band flew all the way to Japan for three shows!  After the Marquee show, we got to spend a good 20 minutes talking with JM, JP, JLB and MP, and they signed my I&W CD booklet.  KM stayed on the bus.
My third show was in February 1993 at the Palace in Hollywood (now the Avalon).  It was a shorter set, with AFIL and YJ being the only WDADU songs in the set.  Alan White and Tony Kaye of Yes were in attendance, which I learned while waiting around behind the club after the show.  My friend and I were talking, and I happened to glance over and saw Alan White.  For some bizarre reason, my first instinct was to say, "ALAN WHITE!" somewhat loudly, which naturally caused him to startle.  I apologized and shook his hand.  The band shot the Take the Time video in the next couple days after this show.
Show #4 was in June 1993 at the Celebrity Theatre in Anaheim (you guessed it; it's not there anymore).  This time, we got Status Seeker, Puppies on Acid, To Live Forever, and Eve, with Eve being the first encore, leading into Learning to Live (WFS was used to lead into Surrounded).  I remember thinking that TLF was probably a song in the works that would show up on the next album, and it has never seemed like a finished song to me.  I'm pretty sure this was the show where I got KM to complete the signatures in my I&W CD booklet.  Of course, I'm fortunate to have gotten the signature since he wasn't around the next time I saw the band in December 1994.
EDIT:  typo
Cool stories  :metal
Actually I kind of forgot about To Live Forever, but I've always really liked it and would've considered putting it on my list. It never made its way onto an album, but we did at least get a couple studio recorded versions of it.
I've been blessed to see Dream Theater 5 times since I became a fan back in '17. But there's still much left to hunger to;
act 1
- The Killing Hand 8.40
- Voices 9.54
- The Mirror 6.46
- This Dying Soul 11.25
- The Glass Prison 13.52
act 2
- Octavarium 24.00
- The Shattered Fortress 12.50
- Outcry 11.24
- Far From Heaven 3.57
Total of 100.48 min. when the studio versions are taken as the standard. I pressume the encore - since it's an encore - doesn't count on the total minute-rule. So this is were the Illumination Theory comes in.
encore
- Illumination Theory 22.18
First Act:
Awaken the Master
This Dying Soul
Voices
Hollow Years
Invisible Monster
Panic Attack
Never Enough
Sacrificed Sons
Octavarium
Encore:
When the Water Breaks (LTE)
Raise the Knife (FFIF demo)
Anna Lee
Pull Me Under
I honestly think they should bring in more LTE stuff in, or do another thing in the vein of Instrumedely. Give James more chances to rest. I have heard PMU live, but it would just be a great closer. :) This is also an imagined setlist for an Octavarium anniversary of some sort.
In The Presence Of Enemies - Part II 16:38
Oh heck yeah!  I'm surprised they haven't played that song live yet..
I wonder how thay go about making a setlist? I can only imagine the conversation: "oh yeah S2N is a great rocker with high energy but we better leave it out this time"    :mehlin
I know the Rush fans would be happy if they played this song including myself.  :coolio
Bit wonky and certainly not a setlist to appeal to the masses, but I'd probably go out of my way to actually attend.
- Cover My Eyes
- The Killing Hand
- Sleeping Giant
- Panic Attack
-----------
- Eve
- Erotomania
- Voices
- Out Of Reach
- Lines In The Sand
-----------
I also think it is relatively straight forward to play on guitar and bass so I am not sure why they have neglected it. Maybe it's my imagination but I feel like the band repeated a bunch of songs on these last 2 legs that they've already done earlier in the MM era...Bridges, 6:00, Endless Sacrifice. I love Bridges and Endless but there are so many great songs like S2N that have been skipped entirely.
This is not an "Evening With" situation - there have to be some limits or it won't be fun, right?
