I just added the composite top 10 DTF albums to the bottom of the OP. More stats to follow.
Colors fell out of the top 5 as it was passed by both WYWH and O:MC. Deadwing and DSOTM both jumped into the top 10, replacing Addicted (Devin Townsend Project) and The Alchemy Index (Thrice).
Images and Words has appeared on 67.4% of all top 50 lists. 6DOIT and Blackwater Park have both appeared on 44.2% of the lists.

Can you shed some light on the scoring methodology? I'm assuming something like a #1 album is 50pts and a #50 album is 1pt or something like that.
One last question to indulge me. Did I have any DTF firsts for my Top 50?

eh, I haven't looked at that for everyone, but it may not be as high as you think. I just looked at mine and I have 15 that haven't been mentioned by anyone else.

went ahead and posted top 20 albums. Master of Puppets was the only album that moved into the top 20 since the last time I ran these numbers.
Other big movers in the top 50 or so albums:
- Symphony X had two albums that made big jumps, V climbed 39 spots to #42 and Divine Wings went up 88 spots to get to #47.
- Opeth's Still Life moved ahead 45 spots to #38
- Radiohead's Kid A was passed by the most albums. It lost 17 spots and now sits at #48.

a couple of notes on the artist ranking:
- Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson finally jumped over Devin Townsend/SYL. Devin has 15 albums earning points to Wilson's 10, but 3 PT albums rank higher than Devin's highest ranking album.
- Opeth is now only 3 points behind Devin
- Rush eclipsed Iron Maiden with this update
- Queensrÿche jumped 6 spots to get into the top 10
- Symphony X jumped 10 spots to get into the top 20

added top 10 years for music according to the top 50 lists
- 2005 continues to dominate, with 2007 still comfortably in second place.
- 2011 passed both 2006 and 2003, primarily on the strength of point gains from Visions (Haken), Grace For Drowning (Steven Wilson), A Dramatic Turn of Events (DT), and England Keep My Bones (Frank Turner).
- Interestingly, 2010 fell out of the top 10 as it was passed by 1999 and 1998 (and 1992).

How the F? I had Mercy Falls at #2 on my second list and jingly had Elinoire at #1 on his second list. Are you not counting second lists then?
Also, I just noticed you have BTBAM's Parallax II in there twice, with different names (one starts with 'The' and is the correct title, as opposed to the one missing that word).

I only input each person's top 50 into the database, so a second list doesn't go in unless it replaces the first one. Since jingle's and your second lists were supplements to the first, they weren't counted.
Although I did notice in your thread you said "At the end of this list, I will combine both top 50's to create a new one that would be correct for all albums I have ever heard." But I don't think you ever posted that list. Post it and I will update your list in the database.

well, I would separate it by band as also. So 80s Metallica vs 70s Pink Floyd vs 00s Opeth and so on.

A Farewell to Kings just missed at #22.
Hemispheres is at #54. PeW is tied with 2112 at #107. (Power Windows is actually higher than both at #72)

I'm happy to get on the "may go" list - I would love to do it but need plenty more time and thought. Numbers one, two and three are obvious to me but that's about it. Recently had a corrupted iTunes library file and lost a lot of my ratings (I'm not good at doing this by memory) and I also have hundreds of CDs in my collection I've barely (or not) listened to.
My list will be a bit more melodic rock/melodic metal + a touch of blues and a bit less prog rock/industrial etc... compared to most here but a bit of variety never hurt anyone :D

Not really............and in the end I'll think as hard as I think .....which is pretty hard when it comes to things I'm as passionate about as my music :P I was going to do an exercise like this anyway - over time I've wanted to have a Playlist of all my top shelf tracks which I can (now I've finally got my Sonos set up) play through my main hifi via Sonos/iPad and ditch CDs, but I've been far too generous with 5 star ratings to the point that the "5-star playlist" is too large and almost meaningless. So this is just going to give me a kick along for what I intended doing eventually anyway........re-doing ratings with less generosity. I'm in front of a PC all day every day listening to music so it shouldn't be too hard.

Chad's right, you're thinking too much. It shouldnt just be about 5 star ratings, it should be albums that share a pinnicle moment in your life, or an album that simply changed your life. That's how I came up with mine and it was rather easy and I still probably wouldn't change that much of it now. I think you are treating it to seriously too. Man, it's not really a top priority in life, don't you have work or something?

I'm glad we've agreed on Talisman and Harem Scarem or I might start to think you take the task of critiquing my posts/thought processes a bit too seriously :laugh: I appreciate the ongoing interest in my life , my sanity and my Top 50 selection process but you're jumping to some conclusions here .
I work my arse off mate - it just so happens that during the 12 hours a day I sit in front of a PC/on the road running my own business that I have music cranking much of the time and I'm enjoying rating my collection.............sorry if that's too intense? Without my music I probably would go nutty.
Like I keep saying I'd be doing the ratings anyway so as to create some cool playlists (or just for fun :eek) and the 5 star rating bit will have nothing to do with the final rankings really. It may not be a huge collection compared to many here but from 2500+ albums (two thirds of which I really rate) down to 50 takes a little thought and yes............I'm the sort of bloke who , when taking on even such an insignificant task in an area I'm passionate about, will enjoy it more if I do it semi-seriously.
The whole idea is that they will all have similar album ratings (v high) and then I can rank based on the whole album experience, time spent with them , their influence on me (mostly) and others. The process of listening to my top 100-200 over a few months will refresh the memory and make the task of deciding the group of 50 a bit easier. The top 20-30 are easy after some thought - the 31-50 slots (many of which I won't have listened to in quite some time) not so much. I'd be listening to stuff all day anyway so why not all my all time faves and kill two birds with one stone?
Hoping we can get back to talking music rather than analysing huge world issues like whether I'm taking my top 50 list too seriously ............

composite top 20 albums list has been updated (the google doc has not been updated yet, getting to that later this week).
Some notes on the updated top 20 albums list:
- Metropolis Pt. 2: SFAM was the biggest point gaining album in the last update with 134 points and it overtook Blackwater Park for #2.
- Colors jumped Operation: Mindcrime as they swapped #6 and #7
- Awake made a huge jump into the top 20 from #23 to #11 as it scored the 3rd most points in this update
- Master of Puppets did well going from #15 to #10
- Terria and Animals also made big jumps to get into the top 20
- Falling out of the top 20 were Deconstruction, ( ), and The Alchemy Index
- Wish You Were scored the 2nd most points this update, but remained at #5

composite top 20 artists list is now updated.
- Dream Theater and Pink Floyd gained the 1st and 2nd most points this update, although there were no changes in the top 5
- Iron Maiden gained the 3rd most points and just edged Rush for 6th. Rush gained the 4th most points
- Pain of Salvation and Led Zeppelin jumped into the top 20 while Tool and Genesis fell out
- Outside the top 20, Nine Inch Nails gained the 5th most points overall and ended up at #26

ok, finally able to look at this . . . I assume you are talking about unique albums. Here are the artists that have 10 or more unique albums in top 50 lists.
Devin Townsend et al - 15 unique albums mentioned
Dream Theater - 12
Rush - 12
Iron Maiden - 11
Opeth - 10
Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson etc - 10
Pink Floyd has 7 unique albums mentioned. After I&W, SFAM, 6DOIT, and Blackwater Park, Wish You Were Here comes in 5th appearing on 36% of lists.
Rush's highest percentage album is Moving Pictures at 18%.
To get to the first Maiden album, you have to go down to 16% (Somewhere in Time and Powerslave).

Normally, a well-timed list shouldn't take more than a month. And you put your rules - although I'd avoid putting two albums in the same position, because of statistical reasons, right Big Hath?

two albums with the same ranking aren't that big of a deal unless you have several of them. The only real issue I run into is if someone doesn't rank their list at all.
Having said that, it's your list. Do what you want.

Yes, specially thanks to the roulette. I made a draft of a new top 50 last month, and at least half the albums were new and most of the others had their positions changed. And I'm discovering so many great records right now that I wonder how the list will look like in 3 months :lol .
I have some free time now, so I guess starting the write-ups for the top 15 tier should save me some time for the future. I think this time I'll put a deadline for new entries, make a draft of the list and then, for some weeks, listen to the 50 albums from #1 to the last one, while writing my thoughts on each. The list will obviously change until the very moment I post the first update, but I hope this will make things easier.

You know what, I am nowhere near ready to start my top 50 yet but I am having so much fun just re-listening through a shit ton of my fave albums and trying to rate them. I know a lot of people would find this incredibly sad :loser: and a waste of time but music is my life. I live for discovering new music. My top 50-40 has so far completely changed as i've been listening to old classics of mine.
It's hard because I have completely changed the way I listen to music over the years. Most of my top 50 are the albums that made me a music fanatic and got me into (mostly) metal. But as I have become more obsessed with discovering new bands I am always listening to new music. I very rarely play albums over and over on repeat like I used to. I have discovered lots of new music over the last 2-3 years, I'm trying to work out if any of the newer stuff out ranks my old favourites. My top three bands never changed for years and years (this will be reflected in my top 50) however one or two bands have edged out my #3 band. It's so hard to rate old classics that with so many attached memories and amazing music (although I hardly listen to them any more) against new albums which are just plain incredible.
All part of the fun I guess ;D

It's a rediscovery process - realising your beloved albums aren't that great while others have grown a lot on you, more than expected, is really a mind-blowing experience. And lots of fun too :biggrin: .

Just finished my first writeup, and I honestly think that it's better than any writeup in my v1. The Listen, Take Notes and Then Write method works great, thanks Evermind for inspiring me in that.

I think it works great because you get some insights when you're actually listening to the music that are hard to recall later, and it also gives you more ideas on how to express your love for that special album rather than "fucking great record :metal :heart :hefdaddy ". Not that its bad to fangirl about it, but someone who has never listened to it might not get an idea of what it actually is about nor how it sounds.
Damn, I should stop procrastinating and start my own write-ups now :lol .

There's actually nothing wrong with that. After I've composed my Top 50 list, and even after I've posted it all, I went to revisit it, and just found out I still love every record immensely. And if you think it's a damnable great record, you have every right to write this very thing.
And yeah, it really pays off to give your write-up a chance to blossom. Doing the first rough sketch of it (and sometimes the second and the third too, depends on the density of the record) and then transforming the thing into a bigger, more full, colourful and precise description is exactly what I'm doing when I write the review for that music magazine I work for. It's wonderful how a few more listens after the first draft of your text can enhance and naturally change your way of writing.

You will be likely be waiting a few months but my recommendation would be to start now. It is a significant exercise that IMHO is much more enjoyable for you and those following if you have pre-prepared most of your write-ups. Writing up as you go can be a chore as daily life interferes and the timeframe tends to blow out.

Well I would imagine that I missed several, since I whipped it up in about five minutes time. I'll probably end up with the top 200. My problem is, I just looked through my iTunes folders, and a lot of my music from my old computer didn't copy over, so… I also was trying to limit myself I don't want to put every single rush album on there, how are every single Genesis album or every single dream theater album...

50 was easy. It was just a matter of deciding what makes it into positions 35-50 and what 20 or so albums didn't quite make the cut.

i had around 80 albums that got onto my rankings list when i first went through my library. did honorable mentions for a good number of the ones that didn't make my list.

there's only like a 2 album overlap with my previous top 50 list there.

This is something that I wanted to do even before hosting a roulette (but never got around to it). I've actually got my top 50 albums in a playlist and the order is pretty much correct.
I'd follow you guys and hopefully get around to doing my own once I've finished my 'top 30 albums of 2016' thread.

Seeing as how my third roulette is about to happen early next year, I'd like to do a second Top 50 list which will include only the albums that DTF introduced to me (avoiding any bands from the first Top 50, too). This will probably be helpful for people thinking of participating, as it would show my current preferences in music, I suppose.
The plan is to start it in the upcoming few days, as I guess there's no actual queue now, and wrap it up right before Christmas rolls around. Would anyone be interested in that?

I'm just compiling my list. This shit is difficult! I'm trying to rate by how important it was to me/shaped my tastes/still holds up today/I actually still listen to it/current favourites.
I also don't want to do a *one album per band* rule as I don't feel it will actually fairly represent what I truly consider my Top 50 of All Time. Some bands just have too many good albums that I just couldn't cut some, and do this justice.

I'll probably do a top 50 in the near future. Although I need to gather my thoughts and make sure my 11-50 albums are correct (at this point I don't think any album will ever replace anything in my top 10) and then do some writing.

Can't remember when the last time anyone went. When these were popular, I think (like Roulettes) the general consensus was 3 at a time. Since none are underway, I say fire it up.

That's where I would struggle with my list. If I do an "All-Time" Top 50, Zeppelin 4 is in the top 10, I played it as much as any album for a 5 year stretch. But that was 20+ years ago. I have little desire to listen to it these days. I'd never take it with me to a desert island.

I've had the idea in my mind for a while to do a Top 50 list ... of the best songs I received in my roulette's. Well, it evolved to a top 150. Seeing as there isn't much activity going on in this area, I'm gonna bless myself to go ahead and do this shortly. The first 100 or so won't have much (if any) writeup to them - just the song/band/album, who sent it to me, and when.
33 DTF'rs have contributed to this list, so there just might be a little something for everyone.

My version 1 was the albums that shaped me to that point. Looking back at that list there was nothing from 2007 and later I believe. This version would be albums that have helped and stuck with me over the last 8-10 years. Growing up you have a different appreciation and perspective of things the older you get. Things move me differently than they did back in the day. The albums I think in this one would represent different emotions, different memories and might simply be a top 50 because of the memories it brings to mind when listening. There may even be some from the past that I haven't appreciated until lately. I'll try and work on something.

Since it's been 8 years, I could probably do another list like that. It's just a matter of committing the disposable time.

But this one is the cream of the crop, the ones I think are 100% flawless and perfect. I've thought about making a thread for it but there would be a bunch of repeat artists so idk

I've degreed May "concept album month" for the majority of my listening. I've got almost 150 concept albums in my library, prolly another 30-40 sitting in Spotify, and I just went through the 6 'concept album' threads that have popped up over the years, and have another 40 or so I'll give an honest shot at (though, I'm virtually certain more than a few will be a waste of time - *cough* Pain of Salvation *cough* ... *cough* Porcupine Tree *cough*)
So, if I were to do a Top 50 Concept Albums thread, anyone care?

It'll be a few months before I get to it... it was just a thought that came to mind, and whether it would be worth the effort. I suspect the listening, sorting, writeups will take quite some time.

Toying with the idea of doing another top 50. Not sure what would qualify for it though. Been thinking about it and pretty much would be albums that just stuck for a long period of time. Gone through a lot of music since the last top 50 and purchased a lot of cd's, but the next 50 would pretty much just be that. Those albums that got more repeated listens than normal when you buy new music. Got a few easy highlights that will be near the top but narrowing down 50 will be hard.

If I combined the two, and kept it to one album per artist, I'd say at least half of the new list would be in the top 50, and I'd gather 5-10 albums would be in the top 20.

I'd be fun to do my own at some point since I have a lot of unusual choices for DTF, and the selection was mostly done when we had that top 100 collage a few months ago. Too much time needed and too many other things on my plate to do writeups currently though.

I might chip away at it here and there ahead of time on my own so it's not such a behemoth to do at once. And then maybe I might think about starting it once the Katatonia discography runthrough is done probably in January, since year-end and holiday stuff will be over, and it'll be mainly roulettes occupying my time here.

This is fascinating how all of a sudden a wave of creativity has washed over the forum. Luke restarting his roulette, now three others on the waiting list, Lethean and I doing a Katatonia discography runthrough (and it looks like several others may have been revived as well), Soundscape and Reaper doing a songs of the year collective project, a new top 50 album thread, at least three others in the works. Probably some other things I'm overlooking.

So, since I floated the idea of doing another Top 50, I recall mentioning last year around this time that I'd consider doing a Top 50 Concept Albums. Well, I did my listening, and made the list last year, but never got around to doing the writeups. I figure if I try to pound out 1-2 a day, then I should have a good head start to fire it up towards the end of the year, or starting off in January.
