Title: DTF Donations Contest: Win prizes and donate to keep the lights on here
Post by: bosk1 on December 02, 2022, 07:35:07 PM
Thanks so much for all who have helped keep the lights on here at DTF through the years.  We haven't done an "official" donations drive in quite awhile, but it's time once again.  And a cool thing has also transpired in that, in addition to the typical prizes, Dream Theater management has also authorized me to allow a winner or two to choose from some items in DT's official online store.

Anyone who donates $15 or more by January 1, 2023, will be eligible for the prize drawing.

EDIT:  Paypal "donate" button on the forum is not working, but you can go to Paypal and donate to dreamtheaterforums@yahoo.com

Anyone donating any amount will receive DTF Alumni status, indicated by green stars/bars under your user name and green user status.  Anyone donating $15 or more will be eligible for a drawing at the end of the contest.  Here are some of the prizes we have:
-Dream Theater CDs (will post specific titles later)
-Dream Theater vinyl (Images and Words, Awake, or Live at the Marquee)
-Dream Theater past tour laminates
-Item from Dream Theater's online store
-Dream Theater DVD/Blu Ray (will post specific titles later)
-Dream Theater vintage shirts
-Systematic Chaos tour book, in brand new condition

Rules:
1.  Donate $15 or more by January 1, 2023 by using the Paypal donation link on the forum
2.  PM me the details of your donation with the words "2022 donations contest" in the title so I can keep track.  (user name, real name, date of donation, amount)

PLEASE NOTE:  You must follow the rules above.  There will be no exceptions.  Somebody a few years ago did not send me the proper information, waited until well after the fact, and did not end up receiving their prize as a result.  I really NEED to clean out my PM inbox because I have over 1,000 PM's.  That isn't your problem; it's mine.  BUT what it means to you if you are donating is that you must PM me accurate details on time with the proper title in your PM or else I might miss your message and it may then end up lost in the PM abyss.  Don't let this be you!

Whether you donate or not, thank you all for another year and for your continued support of the forum, monetary or otherwise.

FAQ:  "How much should I donate?"  I get this question a lot.  There isn't really a right answer.  I've had single donations of as little as a few dollars and as much as a couple of hundred.  It's up to you.  Every bit helps cover the costs of running this place.  If I had to answer, I guess my "preferred" amount would be $35.  But please don't let that deter you if you want to give and can't give that much.  As I said, every bit helps and is appreciated.  Thanks.

Pay money for green stars? What about a blue checkmark? Should we start calling you Elon Bosk?

Jk man. I'll donate soon.

Is there a bankaccount I can make an Ideal-transfer to? I do not own an Paypall account, but be very willing to pay for this forum, even though here in Europe we all sit on our cash since the Russian Poetin went nuts. We devaluated our cashflow, but here I am willing to make a payment though, since this forum brings me so much joy reading.

A few important items:

First and foremost, a big thanks to everyone who contributed, whether a little or a lot.  It all helps and keeps this community going, which I know is important to all of you.  I am behind on responding to PMs, but will get "thank you"/confirmation PMs out to each one of you in awhile.

Second, Paypal is the only official payment channel we have set up.  If anyone REALLY wants to send money through Venmo or Zelle, I can look into that.  But I'd just rather not have to deal with the extra administration, and having money go through a personal account.

Third, I will do the drawing shortly after the holidays, and hope to have things mailed out within a week or two after that (depending on how quickly I get responses on the prizes).  But I just want folks to know that, timing-wise, the end of January and early February are going to be brutal on my schedule, so if I can't get everyone's prize situations sorted out quickly after the new year, there may likely be a delay of several weeks, so be patient please.

Fourth and just as important as the other items above:  That pic is a forgery!  Samsara isn't that tall.

Ask bosk1 to send you an invoice, then you can pay without registering

OK, as to patience....

I have written directly two times with no response or acknowledgement.  An initial 'thank you' would have been nice.

I was going to donate my 'swag' to a fellow DTFer as a holiday gift back around the holidays.

It is now three months later, and still no feedback.

Is there a glitch somewhere?

Bosk1 sent a thank you note here on the thread he said:

Quote
First and foremost, a big thanks to everyone who contributed, whether a little or a lot.

He also warned that there might be a delay of SEVERAL weeks.

Although I agree that a new update would be appreciated. But I'll leave it at that.

Sure, more communication would be nice but really you shouldn't look at your donation as a favor to Bosk. Honestly, my donation was mostly for me because I like this place. Yeah, if it wasn't for the potential to win some prizes I might not have donated but that did take me over the edge and forced me to throw down some money.

Besides, I don't think bosk gets many benefits from running this place. Sure, moderate access to the band, backstage passes, and a few other things I'm sure but not much more.

So a personal thank you would be nice but honestly we should be the ones thanking him.

Boom.  That's me.  I sort of framed my donation in terms of "hey, this place provides a lot of inclusion and camaraderie, and anything I give is probably not enough for what I get out of it."

I've tried a couple of times, but still no iDeal or banktransfer is possible... I do not own Paypall. PM's not been answered yet, so I pressume it'll take a while, before I can make the transfer.

This place is still going and I can come here everyday, so I take that as a thank you for my donation.

While there might be a lack of updates, remember bosk still has to continually do things behind the scenes for us to keep coming here.  I think the old out of sight out of mind mentality comes into play here and we shouldn't ignore what still needs to be done for DTF to still exist.

Maybe it’s as simple as the contest happened and no one on the board won ;)

Out of sight out of mind, just glad to support a place I check daily.

The same thing happened the last time we had one of these donation contests. In 2018 or 19. Donations were made, no winners were ever selected to my knowledge.

I'm fine donating to keep the lights on for this place, prizes or not. But two of these contests have happened with no winners announced, and bosk seemingly just ignoring it. Not accusing bosk of anything, I know we're all busy with shit outside of this forum, but you gotta admit this looks a little sketchy.

I know patience is a virtue, but it would really be cool to get an update from bosk1.

EDIT:

I hope everyone is doing well. I wanted to take a moment to bring up the 2022 donations contest and the prizes that were mentioned in December. It's been almost five months since we received the last update, and I believe many of us are curious to know the current status.

We all love this forum and the sense of community it fosters. Many of us donated not just for the prizes, but because we wanted to support DTF and ensure its continued existence. However, it would be greatly appreciated if we could receive an update on the progress of the prize distribution, as it was one of the incentives to donate and we were all looking forward to it.

I understand that things can get hectic, and our admin has been active on other threads, but I think it's important to maintain transparency and keep everyone informed about what's going on behind the scenes. A short message providing an update would go a long way in reassuring the community that the situation is being handled.

Thank you all for your continued support and participation in the forum. Let's keep the spirit of our community strong and thriving!

Best regards,

Jorge

And he also said he's had two months straight of travel and travel prep.  Bosk can defend himself, he doesn't need me, but as someone who also travels for work, it's not something that is a passive event.

You’re right, he can defend himself, but he’s completely avoided this thread all year. His last post in this thread, or in the one in the General forum, was in December. It’s almost July. No further updates. Not a peep. If he just popped in once at some point and said “Hey sorry, I’ve been busy but I haven’t forgotten about this”, we’d all be a bit more patient and sympathetic. But he hasn’t done that, despite being active on this site. I get that he’s busy outside of here, but he’s had opportunities to give us some kind of update.

Add in the fact that this is the second one of these contests to happen with no winners announced, and it’s just not a good look. I’m not accusing bosk of anything, but me and the others have been more than patient waiting for any kind of update.

Yeah, I'm not trying to accuse bosk1 of anything. I just genuinely want to know what's up. I mean, he's been active in other threads, but not this one. That doesn't look good.
I love this community and I'm happy to help out, even if there's no prize involved. But a prize was promised for donators, so I'm just wondering what's going on with that.

I don't fully agree with that. As I've said before, I'm happy to donate to keep this place going, prizes or not. I don't even care about getting a prize for this contest at this point, as I'm not much of a Dream Theater fan nowadays. If he holds another one of these contests in the future, I'll still donate.
But when you promise prizes as a draw to get people to donate, you deliver on that. And the fact is that this is now the second time bosk has not delivered on that. And despite him being active on this site, he has not acknowledged this contest since December. At this point I just want an explanation.

I do think ragequitting the forum is a overreaction, and we'll see emtee back eventually.

Thats fine.  But rage quitting is such a childish way of handling a situation like this. There are plenty of mods to reach out to.  I'm here for my friends. This place is hanging on because of our donations. If you don't like it, just don't log on. It's the grown up thing to do.

This is not a rage quit. It's a total disappointment quit. I didn't donate so I have no horse in the race but I've known some of these people since 2005 and I've seen them dig into their pockets numerous times over the years to help fellow forum members out when going through difficult times. They are good, honest and decent people with big hearts.

Bottom line here is that Bosk made a commitment to these people. He either needs to step up and honor it or apologize.

Period.

We’ll, I have certainly reach out HERE in this thread for answers. But none has been given, the other mods/admins said that it was bosk1 who will handle this. And they o oh were able to provide the alumni status.

Is not like people have not asked here, politely and or wait patiently since last December.

I guess if we were promised something at least an explanation of what happened is due.

Exactly this!
The thing is that something should be said.
Even more when the band’s management was in some way also involved. As they authorized bosk1 to let one of the winners to choose some item from the official store.

The forum is still active.  That's the only reason I donate, plain and simple.  Should there be a follow up, yeah probably, but I couldn't care less about that part and I can still come here each day.

Don't try and protest and quit though, that's just silly.  What do you think that will achieve?  Life rolls on and no one give a fuck.  People will read this note from you and go, 'meh.'  You're then forgotten two seconds afterwards.  It literally does nothing.

emtee's heart is in the right place, cut him some slack. It's kind of funny he's getting more of a reaction than bosk's non-reaction.

Given bosk's lengthy posts in other threads, it certainly appears he's deliberately avoiding this one. Would literally only take a, "sorry, folks! Not ignoring you, got all the names, did the draw, looking to get this all sorted by the end of July!", and it'd be fine.

For the record, I donated because I like the chat here. The prizes simply don't matter to me. But don't ask for donations and then not follow up on the promise of reward. Especially not when it transpires there's previous. It's not okay.

So, the message wasn't meant for me, but I guess I'll keep checking until bosk1 spills the beans on what went down.

Look, it's pretty obvious by now that the contest ain't gonna happen. They decided to suspend it for who-knows-what reasons.

I won't speak for the rest of the forum 'cause it seems like a bunch of them couldn't care less. But, you know what? As a donor, I think *I* deserve an explanation.

I ain't gonna bug everyone with my talk, but it's just that I wanna know what's up. A simple heads-up from the admin would do, you know?

Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. Time to wait and see what they come up with.

Cheers,

JP

I hit up ChatGPT and asked it to write a statement for the forum on behalf of bosk1.

This is what I was looking for, you know, enough to satisfy "us complainers":

Quote
Dear forum members,

I hope this message finds you all well. I'm writing this post to address the recent situation with the contest that was expected to take place based on donations. As an admin and a member of this community, I believe transparency is crucial, and it's only fair for all of us to receive an explanation.

It has come to our attention that the contest, unfortunately, won't be happening as initially planned. Despite our excitement and anticipation, circumstances have arisen that led us to the difficult decision to suspend the contest indefinitely. I understand this news might be disappointing, and I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.

As an admin, I take full responsibility for not providing timely updates and leaving the thread unanswered. I deeply regret any frustration or confusion this has caused, and I want to assure you all that it was not intentional. I genuinely appreciate your understanding and patience.

The reasons behind suspending the contest are multifaceted, and I'd like to share some insights into the challenges we encountered. Several unexpected technical and logistical difficulties arose, making it unfeasible to proceed with the contest at this moment. Moreover, we faced unforeseen scheduling conflicts and constraints, which further complicated matters.

While I acknowledge that some of you may feel frustrated, especially the donors who contributed to the contest, please know that your support and generosity are highly valued. Your contributions will be carefully handled, and we are actively exploring alternative options to utilize the funds in a manner that benefits the community. Rest assured, your donations will not go to waste.

As we work through these challenges and reevaluate our approach, I promise to keep you informed of any further developments. Our commitment to this community remains unwavering, and we are dedicated to finding solutions that align with our shared interests.

I want to extend my gratitude to each and every one of you for being part of this community and for your understanding during this difficult time. Your passion, creativity, and camaraderie are what make this forum special.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly through private messages or emails. Your feedback is crucial as we move forward, and I'm here to address any queries you may have.

Thank you for your continued support, and let's look ahead to a future filled with exciting opportunities for us to come together as a community.

Warm regards,

[Your Forum Username] (on behalf of the administration)

Out of curiosity (and to Donate again because I want to support DTF), I clicked on the Donate! link in the Header and received the "This organization's page is broken" response from PP.  I'd be happy to Donate if there is another working link.  Looks like the other Mods awarded stars for the 2022 donations so that was taken care of anyway.

Based on my off-forum communications with Bosk (just a few times related to my side business), I'd feel confident saying he's a very busy guy both in business and in personal life, so I wouldn't be inclined to sh!t on him too much... TAC makes a good point as well (as tacfully as ever... pun intended).  I'm sure the Mods understand where everyone is coming from regarding the prizes/contest as well, but I'm also sure there is an explanation for it and I would assume that the explanation involves something personal on Bosk's part so he may not feel the need to explain a personal situation here.  I think that we just don't know the whole story and that the other Mods are sharing what they can share (again, if it's something personal, hopefully Jerry's OK).

I'm sure PMs will be sent to everyone that donated in 2022 at some point to explain the situation.

Still am willing to pay because I learn so much about my favorite band of all here, but when Bosk isn't able to answer my question, does another mod can?

I admire the optimism, vtgrad (Go Hokies btw, if your username means what I think)
But the fact is that it’s been 236 days since Bosk acknowledged this contest. He hasn’t posted at all in over a month, so I can understand if he’s been too busy for the last couple of months or so. Fair enough. But I don’t believe for a second that he’s been too busy all year to give us an update. If there is a “personal situation” or something, he can say that without giving away specifics. I would understand. But to not say anything for over half a year is just inexcusable at this point and is making this problem bigger than it needs to be.
And as I keep bringing up, this is the second time this contest has happened with no follow up.

Screw the prizes, just explain yourself, Bosk.

I do not think busy is his excuse. Bosk is sixteen years in and very devoted to DTF, at least that what it looks like since I'm around. He might has his reasons that weigh a ton and aren't us' to know about.

But a man can't rule the world by himself right? I hope there are mods that can fill the void. And really hopes he conquer his struggle and will be back any time soon.

When it had just been a few weeks of silence I thought, sure people have the right to feel a little annoyed by that.

But it's been over a month since the guy even posted which is extremely uncharacteristic. Rather than continue to operate in bad faith, let's hope he's doing well and that there's not something seriously troubling going on with him.

I'm here for the people, DT and discovering music. The reason I donated was to keep the lights on. The fact that Bosk hasn't been around is a bit troublesome. Been here long enough that this isn't normal for Bosk. Hope he is Ok (and his family as well).

I certainly understand the concern over Bosk's absence and of course I hope he's well. However, he was absent from this thread long before he was absent from the forum.

At this point I believe the mod team has done most of what we can do on our end, and I'm sorry we can't really speak more to issues we're not directly involved in.

With that said, Bosk can reply in this thread and/or reopen it at that time, so I'm going to lock this for now. Just no reason for the same stuff to recircle every week. Please note, I'm not saying that I'm happy about the situation or don't understand the frustration, but at this point there is only one person who can get things back on track, so let's wait till that happens and go from there.

This thread is re-opened.  I'm really sorry for not responding.  I need to go back through and read this.  I haven't been on in awhile and need to catch up (and, yes, I know my stats show that I have logged on--I almost always have a browser tab open to DTF even when I'm not on here).  Just a couple of things BRIEFLY:

1.  Please read this before posting:  https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=58509.0  It helps explain some things a bit, even if I did keep a lot of the specifics to myself.

2.  The contest absolutely IS going to happen.  I need to get on top of that, and I'm REALLY sorry for letting it lag this long.  There's no excuse for that and you all deserve better.

3.  There are some logistics I need to work out.  For instance, everybody who is eligible should get entered.  But I know there were some who wanted to donate that could not because of a broken donations button and some other things.  So people who should have been eligible couldn't even donate.  I need to get that sorted and find a way to reward some folks who wanted to contribute, but could not yet do so.

4.  Please be patient.  It may take me a little while to go back through everything I need to sort this out.

5.  Once again, I'm really sorry guys.

Jerry,

First of all, thanks for reaching out and being open about what's been going on. Life can throw some serious curveballs, and it's totally understandable that things can get overwhelming. We're all human, and we've got your back as you work through these tough times.

Regarding the contest, I'm really glad to hear that it's going to happen, and I appreciate your efforts to sort things out, especially for those who couldn't donate due to the button glitch. It's the thought that counts, and your dedication to making things right doesn't go unnoticed.

Take all the time you need to work things out, and don't worry, we're a patient bunch. Thanks for being honest, and I'm sure we all wish you the best in pulling things together. We've built an amazing community, and we're here to support you.

Keep your head up, and let's look forward to a brighter chapter ahead!

Cheers,

JP

I have never donated, and even if I did, I did it out of my own volition and I also understand what DONATION means. Do people really expect something out of a donation? We're lucky he's even offering an incentive just to get us to donate to keep this forum, we all love, going.

Props to all the moderators for handling this situation, and a big PROPS to Bosk.

I read the other thread, and honestly, there shouldn't have been an explanation needed because it's a DONATION.

This is the least if what you have to worry about mate.  Keep it closed, no need to explain any further.  The forum is still going and with your struggles of late, that's all anyone should be grateful for.  No one needs prizes mate.  I've made my stance known on why I donate, DTF is still the ultimate prize.  You coming out the other side would be another gift so look after yourself and don't stress about this thread.

In honesty, if I were you I wouldn't bother even going back through it.

Never expected to see this unlocked… complete stand-up move by the OP to give a follow up. Recognized and agree that no explanation is needed, just good to be present.

From a distance I appreciated everyone who bumped this thread back up, and also everyone who said lay low and chill. Not sure why either approach now needs to be judged.

Yeah, no need for judgment.  I truly appreciate all the kind words.  But I also recognize that when handling something like other people's money, I can't just not communicate.  I teach leadership and I teach public speaking.  And in both contexts, one things I harp on is: manage people's expectations by telling them what is going to happen.  I didn't communicate as I should have.  And while the struggles I am facing are legit and overwhelming, I don't begrudge anyone for feeling like I wasn't keeping up my end of the bargain by letting this go for so long and communicating.  I know the prizes are secondary.  And I'm sure you all know that too.  But I promised to deliver something, and I was silent as to why that hadn't happened in so long.  So for those who got upset, I own that.

I hate how this issue is making some people act.
All me, Ministro, and all the other “whiny bitches” from this thread wanted was communication. We got it now. The problem is over and there’s nothing to be upset about anymore. If you don’t care about the contest or the prizes, congratulations. What do you want for saying that? A prize? A pat on the back?
It does matter to some of us, and the complete radio silence for 8 months was frustrating. I myself said some things that, in hindsight, went too far. I own that. But Bosk has responded, and as one of the more vocal complainers in this thread, all is forgiven in my eyes.

I would agree that some of the stuff went too far in this thread but all they wanted was an explanation and they got it and I think everyone is cool with that. Carrying this on further kind of continues to litigate something that's been resolved and I can't imagine it's very fun for Bosk to see when he just cut himself open wide so let's not continue to complain about the blood on our brand new floor. Mmmm k?  ;)

Yeah, again, I really appreciate people having my back.  But I own the fact that I needed to communicate, and that's a big part of my apology, and I don't take it personally that people were very bothered and were vocal about that.  Whether or not some of the way that frustration went too far in attributing bad motives to me...yeah, in all honesty, that hurts.  But, again, I get it, and I'm not going to castigate people for feeling that way in light of my silence.  So...water under the bridge, yeah?

Since Bosk isn't able to take the lead in this around the whole 'keeping the lights on in here' these days (no harm done, of course), can another mod sent me an 'invoice sent'? I don't know what that means, but as long as it means I'm able to throw my little penny in the corner (without having a paypall account), I'm glad.

Huh, I never realised. So I could've had green stars for years? Well, I feel I've earned them now I've hit 10,000 posts.

They are not easy to come by, trust me.  I only got mine within the last year, but I got there.  :lol

So it's been 4 months now, did anything come out of this?

The last thing I read from bosk1 on this thread was that he was working on this and that he should have results fairly soon, and that an update was coming.

I primarily donated to get my stars. Got my stars, so now I'm happy

Yeah it kind of sucks that the timeframe for this is stretching into oblivion, but sometimes online projects fail. Now granted, this one involved money, but I never completed my second song roulette and I doubt I would have completed it if people actually paid me to do it :mehlin

Yes, to the first part.

Why? For the second one.

If bosk1 drops in and goes, "Hey folks, the contest is off for some reason," I'd be cool with it and just let it go.

But since he mentioned 4 months ago that he'd handle everything and give us an update, it's totally reasonable to wonder what's up with that, don't you think? If it's not a big deal to you, that's cool, I'm glad for you. But it definitely matters to some of us.

When the drama around this first started, Bosk hadn't been around much, so it was kind of concerning on multiple levels.

But the apology was actually 6, not 4, months ago. Bosk1 has been very active again around the forums.
On top of the original contest starting over a year ago.

For all I know, the band never supplied any prizes, so I won't put the blame squarely on Bosk1. But if they did provide prizes, it feels like that's the kind of thing that should be passed along to whoever the winners may be.

The band don't interface much with the fans anymore the way they used to with the fan clubs and other special things, it's a shame that the things they apparently do still support wind up not really breaking through, for whatever reason that may be.

I just don't think in the scheme of life it's really worth putting any effort into.  The effort should be going into making sure DTF can always remain active and open.

I'm sure another donation drive wouldn't take place without some sort of resolution here but you touch on a more important issue, whatever happens, we need this place and the bigger issue is if it does affect the amount people are willing to put in to help keep this place going.  I don't think it will as 95% of us just wanted to donate to keep DTF going, but the risk is there I suppose.

I guess to me it's a matter of "what's important".  I've learned a long time ago that "man plans, God laughs" and this idea of perfect closure on every issue is a recipe for anxiety and stress and aggravation.

FOR ME, the only part of the thread title that mattered to me was "donate to keep the lights on".  My prize is the friendships that I've made here (and which I hope and pray will last long after this place closes down, if it ever closes down).   If anything else came of it, well, bonus, but for those that it wasn't a "bonus" you have more data with which to decide if you donate again.  For me, I know my next donation will be unchanged based on anything that happened since the last donation.

Same for me. But if you state 'win prizes', you either need to make those prizes available or apologise and say there's been a change of plan, for whatever reason. Simple as that. Then people can decide whether to donate or not in future. For me, it's the principle of it, nothing more, nothing less.

I still lean towards the side favoring accountability, primarily because clear promises were made (Anyone who donates $15 or more by...), and SOME people made donations based on those promises.

While the act of giving should ideally be motivated by a desire to support rather than receive, once a promise of compensation (in this case, prizes) is made, TO ME it becomes a matter of integrity to fulfill that promise or, at the very least, provide a clear and sincere explanation or apology for any failure to do so. Especially since it was reiterated 6 months ago that the situation would be sorted out.

If there are folks here who weren't fussed about the prizes and just wanted to donate to keep things running, that's awesome! Hats off to you! I'm genuinely pleased for you. But for those of us seeking clarity, let us get the answers from the only person who can give them: bosk1.

From the OP.  Note the word 'eligible' plus addressing the donate button issue.

But if it's framed like a contest with prizes then how is it any different from a lottery for example? You buy a lottery ticket and you're in the running for some reward. I doubt anyone would apply the same chill attitude in that scenario if the lottery just didn't deliver on the pay out part of the deal and just bagged the money people spent on the lottery tickets. Sure some people who donated might have done it anyways regardless if there was a contest or not, but I'm sure some did because of the way this thread was framed.

Either way I've lived long enough that I know people break promises all the time and it is what it is. But it's also surprising when people defend such behaviour. I'm not suggesting anyone should be crucified for this but a simple "Yeah it sucks this didn't turn out like it was intended to" would suffice.

Your $15 has gotten your website more than enough traffic hits don't you think by being here? You package every news story to the same link..your site. How come you don't make that clear when you post your news items?

Please. Save your acountability argument for another bunch of suckers. DTF isn't a business, it's a fan site operated by....a fan, a friend so to speak. If you feel taken advantage of, then whatever. You're getting plenty in return, pal.

Prizes have always been offered as a token of appreciation.  If you donated because you thought you might yippee win a prize... well, I don't know what to tell you. Keep your damn money and you know where to find the door.

Some of you are acting like a goddamn bunch of babies.

When you DONATE money, you can't expect 'prizes' to be 'compensation'.  I think you have the meaning of that word wrong.

The issue with your reasoning is that besides asking for a DONATION of $15 or more it was PROMISED that donors would be eligible for prizes, thus 'prizes' as compensation is a valid term.

And despite that, and that the management of the band was also involved in some capacity ("Dream Theater management has also authorized me to allow a winner or two to choose from some items in DT's official online store.") and that after 1 year and 8 months have passed the drawing has not taken place, we the DONORS that were expecting the drawing to happen as promised in the OP are still waiting for answers.

Again, and with all due respect, as some of you don't care for the prizes THAT'S FINE! I don't understand why you care so much for those who DO CARE for the drawing of the prizes, or for at least to get an answer why the drawing will not take place even after it was said 6 months ago that it will be addressed.

The only one acting like a baby here is you dude.

I post links here because I want and because I can, and if you don't like it f*ck it.

Show me where in the rules it says I should not and I'll stop. Plus you are not forced to click anything that I post, so take your words and put them where the sun doesn't hit.

You've gotten plenty of benefit, and frankly should be the last guy to whine in this thread. I don't click your links. I would, but you've come off so poorly in this thread. I think it's disingenuous to direct repackaged news items to your personal website. No, it's not against the rules, but it's deceptive. And I'd leave it alone except for your attitude here.

Plus where does it say that if someone is receiving a certain benefit from the forum is not allowed to ask questions to the owner of the forum? Are you the owner of this forum? Last time I checked you were not, so, from here an out you can obey Arnold above and seriously talk to the hand, I coudln't care less what YOU think of me of the things I do.

The other side of this is annoying me too.  Bosk came out and put everything out there to us telling us he was going through a rough patch.  For a guy of his status to come out, admit he wasn't 100% and apologise profusely was big, my respect for him grew even more after a couple of rough years myself.  So I can relate.

A few of us said close the thread and move on.  He obviously wanted to try with this but my other concern was DTF being active and bosk being okay.  Yet, we are still carrying on about the insignificant side of this in terms of conditions and specifics behind fucking prizes.  Not really helpful to him is it?

If bosk decides hes had enough and says fuck it and DTF closes then we're all fucked and then you'll have no prizes and no fucking forum.  Take your pick.

i don't want my post to come off as if i'm taking sides, because i don't take sides, because nobody is on my side (gotta throw in that Treebeard quote) but i would like to just offer that I don't think MinistroRaven is "Only posting for his own business and benefit". He shares posts to his personal website sometimes, but there's no link in his signature, he encourages DTF posters to submit music reviews on a regular basis (which is encouraging community growth around something we all love - and it encourages creative writing, we all know how much I love creative writing), and he is often posting/starting threads that are entirely unrelated to his website or even to music (he is the starter of the NBA thread, the Happy Birthday Bosk Thread, the Merry Christmas DTF thread, and countless others)

i haven't been here very long but from what i've seen there isn't any evidence of MinistroRaven's supposed "selfish" intent and i for one appreciate his input. i appreciate all y'alls input, even when you are throwing shade at me :D

Not getting back into the argument in this thread, don’t care about either side of it anymore, but I do appreciate what Ministro does. As someone who doesn’t use social media and is very much out of the loop on many things in terms of music news, his updates on this site keep me in the loop.

Generally speaking, I don't really have a problem with Ministro Raven. He's been a member here for a while and provides good content. Repackaging news items directing them to one's own website is fucking cheesy as hell, but I could really give a shit. I only call it out because he's taking shots in this thread like something is owed to him. His website gets plenty of traffic with it's deceptive packaging that his $15 has more than achieved its ROI.

That's great. I don't have social media either besides DTF.

Like I said, he provides good content.

Here's a novel idea - how about those of you who DON'T CARE about the contest anymore follow your own advice and stop posting in this thread?
I know certain people here can't help but police everything said that they disagree with. The funny thing is, this thread was already halfway down the page before wolfking bumped it to criticize something he didn't like. With friends like that...!

How about this...

Consider that some people who submitted to the contest do actually care about the results. Also, consider that it is OK to care about the results, and actually when Bosk1 provided his update last year, he recommitted to eventually delivering them. We all understand that Bosk1 is a grownup, he can occasionally be prompted by his users for updates, and those who don't care anymore can just... not care!

As for me - I own almost every single DT item I'd want to own, and could easily purchase anything I don't currently have. "Winning" something would be nice, but I don't need it. Getting green stars would be nice, but I don't need that either. Learning the contest has come to a close, how long the site is funded for in the future, how much we raised, etc., all that's a lot more interesting to me, personally. Sure, yes, I can tell that the "lights" are still "on" because we're still here 15 months since the contest started. But did we pay the utility bill, or did we just run an electric cable out our back window to our neighbor's outlet? LOL

Fun reading here during the commute home lol…

For the next set of donations I’d love to see a target amount. Call it drive for 5k (or whatever the goal is) so then when we hit the number, everyone can say yay as a community and move on. I’d hate for this place to go offline cause we unwittingly didn’t do enough.

OK, I know I posted a few weeks back and said I would have the results soon, but had some things interrupt the process.  Sorry, I know I said it would be "soon," but it's more tedious and time consuming than you might think.  I'm out this weekend, but expect to have it done about a week or so after that, give or take.  Again, sorry for the delay.

That said, some of the discussion here is clearly off the rails, and some of the other mods would have locked the thread if I hadn't previously said I would leave it open for comment.  If anyone has any specific questions, you can PM me.  As I've said before, I own the fact that there was an extreme delay the first time around, and there are circumstances in my private life that I can't get into publicly that contributed to that.  But some of the more recent posts are truly how people feel, I'll definitely think twice about asking whether people want to keep the site going the next time the account starts to run low.

A lot of this makes me wonder if the band is to blame here.  Maybe the band never supplied the goods and bosk is taking one for the team. I could be wrong of course, just stating a thought. I dont think I need to state my opinion again and again here though.

Dude, what the heck?  Why would you even think/say that?  That has nothing to do with any of this.  But thanks to rumors like this, I now have members PMing me asking if they can donate stuff to give as prizes.  Seriously, think before you post this kind of stuff.  Now there are rumors out there that are completely unfounded thanks to posts like this.

I hate to use a "both sides" argument but as I've said before, I think one side is a little too caught up in this giveaway in which they weren't even guaranteed anything, just the possibility of getting something, and the other side seems obsess over the idea that those people are somehow doing something wrong and we need to be protected from ourselves by having the thread locked or at least condemning those that are caught up in the lack of prizes. Wow, that was a long sentence.

As someone that donated thinking I have probably a 50/50 chance of getting something, eh...bummer. I literally don't think of it until the thread pops up. But to see the visceral reaction to anybody wanting an explanation is...a bit much.

Edit:just saw bosk respond. Good deal, man. Best of luck with whatever personal stuff you got going on.

I think the vast majority of us couldn't care less whether we get a prize or not. I certainly couldn't. But as I've said, and people's mileage obviously varies on this, if you say prizes are up for grabs, there should be prizes up for grabs. Either present the prizes or say there's been a change of plan. It's that simple. bosk1 has chosen, twice now, to say there will still be prizes so the expectation remains.

The discussion should effectively be over but people continue to agitate it by accusing others of "whining". It's all rather silly and should be beneath the vast majority of us.

Thanks for the update Bosk! Without knowing the specifics of your personal problems I can relate to falling behind on things when you have other issues taking up time and energy. It's even quite clear in your post when you say "I posted a few weeks back" when actually it was 6 months ago. I don't mean that as a jab or a negative thing, because I think we can all relate to having rough patches in life and it feels like time is going really slow for yourself dealing with problems but in reality time just flies by. I do hope you'll work things out and that life improves.

And like others have said there's 2 sides to any coin and I think the argument between the 2 sides got a bit too heated at times. I don't think it's fair to say people were whining for wanting some update/resolution after 6 months since the last update. But it's also fair for close friends to defend someone they care about and say "let it be". I do think perhaps that some people felt neglected seeing Bosk active in other threads on the forum (so not AWOL completely) but just not posting here and that probably stirred some emotions, but I can also relate to the Bosk perspective that if you don't have the energy then it might feel overwhelming coming in here to basically say "Sorry I don't have an update yet but I'm working on it".

Just on an end note I have thought about donating myself and would be open to do it in the future but as someone else pointed out (I think) the donation link seems broken at the moment. I don't mind donating without a reward but I will say that a small thing like getting the green stars is a cool little thing that (for me at least) makes it even more rewarding, aside from helping the forum stay afloat ofc. :)

Thank you for updating us.

But I think that post is unfair. Cram was only trying to have your back.

Literally said he might be taking one for the team (showing I was on bosk's side here), but to be honest

You, Bosk, did not say anything so what do you expect? I've defended you here, but if you are mad because you are getting PMs about this, that's not on me.

Who the hell is marc?

Wait, wait, wait....Cram? Marc?

So are we just calling people by their real names now? That'll get confusing.

:lol that was what my 12 year old mind thought was cool for a screen name for AIM.  My name is marc and I used cram because its my name backwards.  X's were cool to have in your screen name and 3 has always been my favorite number, and for some reason, I just haven't let the screen name go.

Also to add,

just would like to apologize, never meant to make anyone upset or cause more commotion than already was happening.

I was always cool with my donation simply being a donation to my favorite corner of the web.

FOR ME, the only part of the thread title that mattered to me was "donate to keep the lights on".  My prize is the friendships that I've made here (and which I hope and pray will last long after this place closes down, if it ever closes down).

Consider me in Tims camp.

I learn so much of my favorite obsession in here and am grateful to many mods & members. And since I don't know any of you except from here, I surely hope we'll keep the lights on forever.

Bosk1 I've send a pm.

Just commenting to say that I’d love to donate a few bucks, but as some have mentioned, the link is broken still. Hopefully that gets fixed soon. ✌🏼
Was able to donate by just searching dreamtheaterforums@yahoo.com in PayPal, as bosk said pages and pages ago.

Thanks for that.  And, yeah, it was farther back than I thought.  But it was October 17th (I really thought it was later), so not 6 months ago either.  But, yeah.

And I got the PMs and will respond to those.  Just got back from a trip literally just a few minutes ago, so I'm going to bed.

I really and truly want to move past this but unless I'm missing something, August 13th is when you re-opened the thread, apologized and gave assurances that this was still going to happen. And that is 6 months.

Enough! What's your point? You know you don't always need to point out you're right. I'm locking this thread. If you have questions or comments  PM Bosk as he suggested.

Yes, but:

Just want to take a moment to let you guys know I am working on this and should have results fairly soon.  Really sorry this took so long.  Again, that was unacceptable, and I'm really sorry.  Update coming...

October 17th.
