Title: POLL: How do you feel about Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell"?
Post by: WildRanger on June 29, 2020, 01:09:57 PM
BOOH is the third best selling rock album of all time, behind Back in Black and Dark Side of the Moon (over 40 million copies).
How do you rate it?

I call shenanigans because the poll is biased and only offers one negative option but there are two positive options. This is voter suppression

I've never heard it other than the title track, but there was no option for that.

Probably the most overrated album of all time.  I'm not a fan at all.

Can there be an option that says 'I am completely indifferent' ?

(and another option that says 'I don't care' just in case)

Let me sleep on it. I'll give you an answer in the morning.

Awesome album. Bombastic, larger than life, exagerated and unprecedented for its time. I prefer the 1993 follow up even more, but this album drips rock and roll exageration all over the place and Meat Loaf's voice in his prime was something out of this world.

We need to know right now if you'll love this album forever.

If I were running this poll I would've listed the options as

I like it
I love it
I want some more of it

Well, two positive options out of three ain't bad.

This is what I was thinking!

I haven’t listened to it in a long time, but my parents played it a lot when I was a kid. I remember always liking it and most of the melodies are still memorable. I think I’ll make time to listen to it this week.

Jim Steinman had this very theatrical, almost Broadway style Rock and Roll, and Meat Loaf's over-the-top delivery completely sold it.  Put it in the hands of Todd Rundgren, one of rock's greatest producers, and you have pure magic.  That's why the Bat out of Hell albums all kick ass, and the rest of Meat Loaf's albums suck.

I would've loved to have heard Steinman's Hysteria. Have any of those songs seen the light of day?

Love it. I’m a sucker for Meat, though his last few albums haven’t been up to much.
BOOH is a classic for a reason.
Iirc it made the honourable mentions in my top 50.

That's what she said.   Anyway...

I love this album.  Pure cheese, of course, and of course, 70's excess.  Even if it's not your cup of tea, it's hard to argue with almost 45 million albums sold.  I don't listen to it often, but occassionally I'll go back to "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" and "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad".

Mike has a one-degree connection to the album; Kasim Sulton played bass on all but one of the tracks.

If memory serves, the girl in "Paradise..." (it's NOT Karla DeVito, though she's in the video and did the tour) was in Night Court, and was later replaced by Markie Post.

Can we also take a moment to appreciate the absurdity of the guy of Paradise clearly just wanting to bone, swearing to love her forever to do so, and yet living up to his oath and staying in a lifelong and evidently joyless marriage with her?  :lol

(Or maybe they had years and years of a happy and fulfilled marriage and they became grumpy as they got older)

Not the latter; the live shows had (and, I think, still have) a little vignette between Meat and Karla where they acted out the divorce, ending with her yelling "and I'm taking the child!" which left Meat "speechless"...

Awesome!  So we got an epilogue to the story.

I didn't realzie that Kasim played bass on the album.  I knew Todd produced and played guitar, so it makes sense.  Kasim is the bassist for Utopia.
