Title: The Mike Mangini Discography on Spotify
Post by: erwinrafael on June 17, 2020, 10:00:45 PM
Hello. Long time no post! Just wanted to share the Mike Mangini Discography playlist I made which contains all the songs Mike Mangini played in that I can find in Spotify.

The Mike Mangini Discography (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6xj68REWviELla4VAOnh1J?si=D4e7qYDGSxKrww8-k0jukA)

Some tracks that I can not find are the two songs in Nuno Bettencourt's Schizophonic album and Annihilator's Metal album.

I used to rank Steve Vai's Alive in an Ultra World and James Labrie's Elements of Persuasion as his best pre-Dream Theater work. But while I am still keeping Alive in that list, I am replacing Elements with Sal Difusco's Great Exploits and Tribe of Judah's exit elvis. I only got to hear his work with Sal Difusco when I finally got Spotify and wow, that was amazing work. Check out Great Exploits, I implore you! You can actually hear cymbals.  :lol In Sal Difusco's 2008 album, Vanishing Mist, we even get to hear Mangini doing jazz!

I am still amazed that Mike churned out some of his best work in 2018 and 2019 with Into The Great Divide and Distance Over Time. He keeps on improving, trying new techniques, playing things we haven't heard before. Progressive in the true sense of the word. What an inspiration.

I don't use Spotify anymore, but I'd love to see all of this.

I agree on ITGD and D/T being two incredibly amazing recorded performances, some of his best for sure :metal :metal :metal

I like his work with Annihilator best. To me, he’s always excelled more on the heavy stuff.

Annihilator’s All for You is a good (bad) album.

erwinrafael, thanks for the heads up!
Do you know if MM is the only drummer for those Sal Difusco albuns?
Edit: nevermind, I saw the Spotify list👍

I believe this one is missing from your playlist:

MM plays in the entire album.
Thanks again for the playlist, the songs with Sal Difusco are really good and I didn’t know them.

Is Mike on the second into the great divide album - a life in six acts? Because that album is awesome.

He is not. (unfortunately, IMHO) It was all programmed.

Yeah, it's a bummer. Zack said that MM was busy recording with DT (for D/T), so he programmed the drums. The end result was great though, and I can only imagine how much better it would've been with Mike on drums, as the first album had some WILD playing by him.

I agree. Although the programmed drums are very very good, I'm sure Mangini could make the songs of (already excellent) A Life in Six Acts even better.

Wow, that's a badly recorded album. Hahaha. Mike even made a noticeable mistake and they did not even rerecord it.

I am listening to the Great Exploits album again. I think this album will put to rest the idea that Mike does not know how to play hi-hats. LOL

He came up with some sort of favorite drum pattern in 2002, the one with all four limbs moving where he plays the hi-hats and ride/crash at the same time that you go crazy thinking how to hit the snare. Played in the song No One in the exit elvis album and Arrows of Victory in Great Exploits. He played a variation of this pattern in the intro of Illumination Theory. Love it.
