Title: STAY AT HOME - MINI HOME ROULETTE v.2 fiiiinal results my bois! W H O WON?
Post by: home on March 16, 2020, 11:31:40 AM
A word of welcome

I didn’t expect to ever have time for another Roulette, but now that this Corona crisis forces me to barely leave the house… STAY AT HOME - MINI HOME ROULETTE LETS GO!

 :metal

Format

The format will be quite simple, it starts with 4 regular rounds with the first one being a cut-off round if more than 10 people apply. This will be followed by a final EP round, details for this below. I will allow any song up till 8 minutes and give everyone the chance to send one song that is below 20 minutes. This can be done in any round you want. Do note that you don’t have to send a long, I actually usually prefer short songs. Just a heads up, the best song of my previous roulette, and most listened song of that year according to Spotify, is less than 3 minutes long (such attention span I know). I’m not putting up any themes as I don’t want to restrict the players (very lazy too I know). Please note that it’s a short roulette, and that you are in for all but the last round if you made it past the first one, so please take risks! :D

Oh and songs will be scored out of 10 (damn I started to miss this intuitive grading system now that I live in Germany).

Also deadline for sending will be 48 hours after the results. Late submission is less listens. in general I won't wait ;p

EP Round

The three participants who have the highest summed score after the first four rounds can send an EP (the others are of course still welcome to send one, but won't be able to earn points for it).

EP's have to adhere to the following:
The maximum total time length is 30 minutes and the minimum is 24.
The maximum amount of songs is how many you can fit within the time limit, the minimum is 3.
The maximum amount of songs by one artist is 3, the minimum amount of different artists is 3.

Scoring will be done as follows:
The mean score over all songs on the EP will be calculated. This will be multiplied by 2.
Songs that segue into each other (including short introduction songs) may be counted as one song, if you want to make use of this let me know.
On top of this 5 points will be awarded for flow, story and creativity.
The total amount of possible points in the EP round is thus 25.
The EP score will be added up to the point total from the first four rounds, making the maximum achievable score in this roulette 65 points.

The person with the highest score wins!  ;D

Tastes

I would say that I am quite open to try a lot of things. Lately (I say lately, but I mean the past two years) I listen mostly to Indie Rock and Hip Hop. Some of my all time favourites in these genres are The Dear Hunter, Frank Ocean, Tyler, the Creator, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, James Blake, Death Cab For Cutie, Elliott Smith and Bon Iver. For Hip Hop I tend to like stuff that is slightly more experimental, industrial sounding while for Indie Rock I mostly look for stuff that really hits me in an emotional way.

Next to this I obviously like Progressive Music. Within this genre I am usually not that a big fan of super technical stuff, loong songs or el o n g ated solos, but enjoy more stuff that is either groovy or again, emotional. Favourites here are Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree, Karnivool, Mastodon and Fair to Midland.

Finally I have been digging some lyric-less music, be it electronic, modern classical music or post-rock, stuff like Odesza, Jon Hopkins, Bonobo, Olafur Arnalds and God Is an Astronaut hits the right spot.

If none of these names say anything to you don’t worry at all (but be ashamed), just send something in the first round and see if you get through!

Just two notes, firstly I am definitely looking for stuff out of my comfort zone, so don’t be restricted by this Tastes part (I feel most Roulette hosts say this and are ignored but hey). Second note, despite trying to be open I am just not a big fan of cheesy stuff (I’m so sorry Evermind but this includes most of power metal for me).

TLDR: If it makes me feel melancholic or on top of the world things you get points.

Second note, despite trying to be open I am just not a big fan of cheesy stuff (I’m so sorry Evermind but this includes most of power metal for me).

That this was directed not towards me but Evermind actually made me laugh.  :tup

Second, you're looking for stuff out of your comfort zone, so I'm gonna make that my theme for this roulette

So I’ve been watching these threads for a while and read the primer on how the Roulettes work. I’m not quite clear on the mechanics. It sounds like participants DM a song to the person running tue roulette each round and then each song gets scored? Do you just send them a link to YouTube, Spotify, or what?

That's exactly it and you are very welcome to join!  :D For me a Spotify link is preferred, but if the song isn't on there, YouTube or anything else is fine too (as long as I can listen to it).

Second, you're looking for stuff out of your comfort zone, so I'm gonna make that my theme for this roulette

Awesome!  :metal And YouTube link is fine :) (though I'll likely just look up the song on Spotify anyway so I can add it to that round's playlist).

It's funny, I was just thinking the other day, that if Home ever runs another roulette, I'm sending Bonobo in the first round. Lo and behold, not only is Bonobo banned, but you also mentioned it in your Tastes section.....hmm, new plan then.

I'm pretty sure home is the one who sent me the fantastic Migration by Bonobo in my first roulette. Man that album is good.

I sent a song even TAC would know, if he was playing.

OKIDOKI here are some snippets of the write-ups. Right now scores range from 5.5 to 8.75, but that might still change. I plan on getting 2/3 more listens in.

Can you guess which is yours?  ;D

------------------------------------------------------------

1. This song has a lot of things I really love in music: the structure is compelling with a nice build-up and climax, while still being nicely concise.

2. The lack of emotion in the vocal delivery kind of rids it of the comforting warmth melancholic music normally gives me.

3. And damn I didn’t expect that explosion at the end but it just makes it all that better.

4. The lyrics are awfully cheesy though.

5. The transition into the last part does a great job of snapping one out of the meditative state the repetitions get you in and allow you to nicely float out of the song.

6. I dig how the melancholic vibes off the verses contrast with the happy instrumentals in the chorus.

7. I somehow expected something more original from this band.

8. The bridge has a few nice riffs but overstays its welcome.

9. Directly from the start I am enthralled by that stunning voice.

10. I’m not so sure if really stands out from all the -redacted- inspired bands though.

I know which one I’d use of these for mine, but now I’m really curious.
But... which one?

6. I dig how the melancholic vibes off the verses contrast with the happy instrumentals in the chorus.

It'sa me, Mario
Nope, it'sa not you, Katellio

Babe! It's 4 pm time for your dick flattening roulette round 1 results!
Yes honey

Actor| Observer – In Your Ways: 8.75
This song has a lot of things I really love in music, the structure is compelling with a nice build-up and climax, without being too long. It has a lot of emotion and feeling, and the “you’re loosing us” part keeps getting stuck in my head. So yeah not sure what else to say about it except that I really loved it and you’re a well deserved first round winner!

Boards of Canada – Chromakey Dreamcoat: 8.5
I just adore the mood of this song. That initial guitar riff that gets repeated over and over again immediately grabs your attention and draws you in to this beautiful sonic landscape. The transition into the last part does a great job of snapping one out of the meditative state the repetitions get you in and allow you to nicely float out of the song. I can already see this band becoming one of those bands I love to listen to when having to concentrate/study late at night.

Sharon Van Etten – Seventeen: 8.25

YES! Immediately reminds me of St. Vincent, who I really love. This song is catchy and moody. It’s the kind of melancholy that’s comforting and reflective. Those subtle sounds and high squeals in the instrumentations are great. And damn I didn’t expect that explosion at the end but it just makes it all that better.

Wheel – Up The Chain: 7.25

Man I dig the grooves. There’s enough in the instrumentals going on to keep it both interesting to listen to as well as being very head-bobbing-inducing. There are some really strong vocals too, love both the cleans in the verses as well as the more raw sounding parts in the choruses. However here’s the comment you were expecting, I’m not so sure if really stands out from all the Tool-inspired bands though. While some bands that get accused of this, Karnivool, Rishloo etcetera really made there own version of Tool I feel this band is really copying them, even in the vocal delivery. Luckily for you this doesn’t take away that this song is quite solid. And who knows, while this song is far from the level of Tool’s best songs, I might end up enjoying the album it’s on more than Tool’s latest.

Carpenters – Superstar: 7.25
I immediately love the mysterious vibe of the instrumentals. And then that voice, while the snippet about enthralling vocals actually wasn’t about this song, this would be the next song it would apply to. The chorus kind of breaks the mysterious moods which would be okay; the lyrics are awfully cheesy though. So yeah, I love the vocals and the atmosphere of the song but I can’t really get into the lyrics, maybe I’m just not in love enough right now ;p

Soup - Nothing Like Home: 7
Directly from the start I am enthralled by that stunning voice. The careful instrumentals complement it perfectly. The composition isn’t as enthralling though, parts go on a bit looong (especially the last part) and the transition around 2:30 feels kind of awkward. Still I am looking forward to hearing more of this band, mostly just want to here this singer in other songs

Deftones – Entombed: 7
The riff that keeps repeating is quite nice but maybe a bit too simple (just an ascending scale) for how often it is used. There are definitely some nice emotions in the vocal delivery. However I somehow expected something more original from this band, this just feels like a pretty standard power ballad. Despite that, I did enjoy listening to it quite a bit.

Ben Howard – Diamonds: 6.5
The vocals in quite a low register are pretty good and fit the song really well. I dig how the melancholic vibes off the verses contrast with the happy instrumentals in the chorus. Other than that this song seems quite a radio-friendly indie/singer-songwriter song, without anything that really sets it out from millions of similar songs. Which is okay, it’s a pretty good execution of a tried-and-tested formula, but I’m not sure if this is enough to get me into his music.

The Blue Nile – The Wires Are Down: 6
I have somewhat mixed feelings about this song, mostly because I just not sure what kind of mood it wants to convey. The vocal delivery and music feel almost somewhat apathetic to me, which might be on purpose? Reflecting the depressed mood one can be in after wires are down? Usually I love depressing songs, but the lack of emotion in the delivery kind of rids it of the comforting warmth melancholic music normally gives me. I started appreciating the gentle instrumentation a bit more with successive listens, and the score went up by a little because of that. I know you said this music is quite close to your heart, so I feel kind of sorry for not liking it that much. And I definitely don’t think it’s a bad song, it just doesn’t really reach me.

PreHistoric Animals – Burn The Ground: 5.5
This song just feels very okay-ish to me. The guitar riffs starting at 0:30 feel very basic to me, the vocal delivery is quite decent but never really grabs me. The bridge has a few nice parts but overstays its welcome. I didn’t hate it, so I won’t give an insufficient score, but yeah nothing really stuck and I don’t have a desire to listen to this again.

Scoreboard
------------------
Cyrilama: 8.75
Puppies_on_acid: 8.5
Tomislav: 8.25
Romdrums: 7.25
Kattelox: 7.25
Sacul: 7
Train of Naught: 7
Nekov: 6.5
HOF: 6
Elite: 5.5

Final thoughts

A nice mix of songs this round, thanks y’all! If you got a low score, no worries there are still enough rounds to come! The top three are actually quite good examples of things I really like in music so if you’re completely lost you could listen to them. Also somebody please send me some Hip Hop :D .

Oh, man, sadness! Was not expecting you to say Paul Buchanan’s delivery lacks emotion! Warmth is definitely the word I’d use to describe this song. To me it’s a song about despair, just giving up hope because “nothing works here anymore” and you can’t leave. “When I held you I was strong, but I held you too long” gets me every time. “I shout at the dying light, I can’t get out of shanty town.” Chef kiss!

No worries. Just on different wavelengths I guess. For reasons I don’t quite understand this song was left off the Hats album (I guess maybe someone at the record company felt the way you do), but it’s one of the first things I heard from them and one of my favorites. I still highly recommend checking out that album if you get a chance.

This seems to be a stronger overall round than the previous one. There's one song that really sticks out from the rest after first listen, but there are quite some songs I look forward to listening too more  ;D

Here's the tracklist:
Kiev – Tube Orms
Arms and Sleepers – Twentynine Palms
Astrosaur – Poyekhali
VOLA – Still
Chilidish Gambino 19.10
Public Service Broadcasting – The Pit
Amy Shark – Drive You Mad
Shlohmo – Buried
Slushii – Sapient Dream
The Mayan Factor – Warflower

And first impressions:
I really dig how subtle this starts, with some gorgeous minimalistic piano. The man’s and woman’s voice work super well together.

Loove the minimal beat, maybe inspired by Lorde - 400 Lux? On first listen the chorus doesn’t really stand out or stick, but that might definitely change with successive listens.

There’s definitely some cool instrumental stuff going on but on first listen it just kinda happens without me really getting into it. This probably needs a bit more time to completely digest though.

Beautiful atmospheres, love how it conveys intensity and urgency in the last part.

Immediately dig this more than your previous submission! Some cool keyboards in the outro.

Well this starts weird! Curious to hear where it’s heading. Absolutely love how all these different sounds work together.

Are you sending me vaporwave haha? It’s definitely very chill and happy.

I like how it picks up from the slow mood about halfway. That’s a tasty bass riff.

Love the vibe the guitars create. I dig the singer, both his voice and the melodies, especially on the chorus.

That’s a cool funky beat! I’m not so sold by the vocals yet.

Hey buddy did you hear the news?
-cool rif-
It’s track reviewz

----------------------

Arms and Sleepers – Twentynine Palms: 9

I really dig how subtle this starts, with some gorgeous minimalistic piano. The man’s and woman’s voice work super well together.
There’s just so much I love in this song, the melancholic atmosphere, the subtle crescendo in the first minute, those cool electric sounds, the way they break it down and build it up again halfway through, the transition into that beautiful last part. This song already stood at first listen, but still managed to grow on me a lot. Already looking forward to digging into this band’s discography.

The Mayan Factor – Warflower: 8.5
Love the vibe the guitars create. I dig the singer, both his voice and the melodies, especially on the chorus.
The guitars on this song immediately grip me, despite mostly playing a pretty simple motive over and over again. The singer is what really carries this song though, I love how he starts quite subtle and keeps adding more grit. The composition is maybe a bit stretched out but I still pretty great, I dig the bridge-y part and the small break-down before the last chorus.

Public Service Broadcasting – The Pit: 8.25

Beautiful atmospheres, love how it conveys intensity and urgency in the last part.
This song is a great example of how to use spoken word effectively, it’s not as sometimes is done: let’s put some sample over this instrumental part. To the contrary, I feel every spoken word part here is a crucial part of the composition, whether it leads into a new section or adds intensity. Coupled with a nice build-up I can definitely say I really enjoyed this song!

Shlohmo – Buried: 8
Well this starts weird! Curious to hear where it’s heading. Absolutely love how all these different sounds work together.
First of all, the sound design here is just stellar, I don’t really know anything that sounds similar and that is I think mostly because of the sounds they use. The build-ups/composition here are great. Maybe a slight complaint is that despite being 7 minutes, there’s only really one melody. However that does kinda work as in it makes the song somewhat meditative. I’m hoping more songs by this band will surprise me like this!

Kiev – Tube Orms: 7.75
I like how it picks up from the slow mood about halfway. That’s a tasty bass riff.
Nice slow, slightly melancholic, vibes at the start. Dig the transition at about 2 minutes in and that bass riff starting at about 2:30 remains still keeps my head bobbing. I was expecting a bit more of a climax at the end, due to the kind of washed out vibes it never manages to grip me completely.

VOLA – Still: 7.75
Immediately dig this more than your previous submission! Some cool keyboards in the outro.
I like the way this song starts, the way the different instrumentals come in sequentially isn’t super unique but it’s done well here. The vocals in the chorus are really nice too. Despite my initial impression I would say the keyboards here are the part I started caring least for. Still it’s a really solid song, and a good reminder I should check out this band!

Amy Shark – Drive You Mad 7.5
Loove the minimal beat, maybe inspired by Lorde - 400 Lux? On first listen the chorus doesn’t really stand out or stick, but that might definitely change with successive listens.
The electronic sound that fades in and out during the whole song is pretty cool, but it’s almost the same as 400 Lux,  though twice as fast. Doesn’t take away that I really dig the atmosphere in this song. On a whole this song doesn’t stand out that much though, the lyrics for one are pretty straightforward.

Slushii – Sapient Dream: 7.25
Are you sending me vaporwave haha? It’s definitely very chill and happy.
My opinion on this hasn’t changed that much, it feels like a pretty light-hearted song. It doesn’t move me but I do enjoy listening to it. It’s not as interesting/unique as songs by similar chill sounding artists, like Tycho for instance. The production is great though!

Astrosaur – Poyekhali: 6.75
There’s definitely some cool instrumental stuff going on but on first listen it just kinda happens without me really getting into it. This probably needs a bit more time to completely digest though.
About 6 listens in and unfortunately I still can’t say anything in this song really stuck. Doesn’t take away that it still makes for an enjoyable listen. I would say it starts me a bit too abrupt for me (maybe I’m just not that much into this high energy moods lately). I do really enjoy the chuggy section at around 1 minute as well as that melody a minute later.

Chilidish Gambino 19.10: 6

That’s a cool funky beat! I’m not so sold by the vocals yet.
The production on this started to actually kind of annoy to me, it sounds very loud (especially the drums) and kind of flat/undynamic. I do dig the overall vibe somewhat, it’s nice and funky. Still not a big fan of the vocal melodies here. Sorry…

---------------------

Final thoughts
Definitely a stronger round than last round, with the average score being almost half a point higher this time around. Overall the scoreboard shifted quite a bit, though both Tomislav and Puppies_on_acid remained in the top three. Don't despair if you're not at the top now though, two people score more than two points higher this round compared to the first one. Anyway I am really enjoying listening the song so far and I'm really looking forward to what y'all send :D

Nice!  This whole album tells a story of the Welsh coal industry through interviews, film clips, etc. as well as some sung lyrics. That’s kind of the band’s thing, and I agree they know how to use spoken word really effectively. There are at least two other tracks on that album I really debated sending. It’s a pretty diverse album, but The Pit gives a pretty good representation of the range of sounds they incorporate. It’s very cinematic and really draws you in. One of the more unique albums I own and one of the best things I’ve discovered in the last few years.

Definitely check out their album The Machine. It's there best, in my opinion. Replacements is pretty good and After the Winter is great. I wouldn't bother with The Dark of the City, it wasn't that good.

Here's a little easter present for y'all  ;D

Blueneck – Epiphany 8.5
I love how the singer has kind of a broken voice but it feels so soothing. The atmosphere in this song is the good, comforting sadness. I just feel the song building up knowing this has to climax into something. And when it does, boy it does! I immediately pause want to pause what I’m doing and just close my eyes and let myself drown in the music for two minutes

The Comet is Coming – Summon The Fire 8.25

Love the start of the song, the slightly dark vibe. That distorted brass sounds so cool and I dig the motive it plays. I actually like this a lot more than any jazz I’ve heared, and I think that is mostly because of the more darker, crazy atmosphere. Also I feel the composition is a bit  more graspable than what've heared, it’s interesting and progresses quite a lot without becoming ‘random’. Another great submission, and something that is of a genre I barely listen to!

Thievery Corporation – Heaven’s Gonna Burn Your Eyes 8.25
I absolutely love the vocals on this song, they sound really unique and have such a cool mysterious and slightly creepy seductive vibe to it. Even though the lyrics in the chorus are quite basic, due to the way it’s sung and repeated it get’s such a different charge. The composition is quite repetitive but works quite well here, also I absolutely dig when the drums enter.

Pure Reason Revolution - Bullitts Dominae 8
I just love the melodies and the way the vocal sounds in that after-chorus section (first time around 2:20). Instrumentally it’s pretty solid all the way through and that’s a nice intense outro. I’m not that much into progressive rock right now but this sounds quite fresh while still including a lot of things I like about the genre.

Kaddisfly - via rail 7.75
I really like the atmosphere and vocals in the first part. The chorus is pretty solid but I feel it clashes a little with the first part, style wise. I do like how all the different parts and feels keep the song interesting to listen for 5 and a half minutes. However I do feel that the mix of styles keep me from really getting it into emotionally as much as the previous post-hard core song you send. Still it’s a damn solid post-hard core one!

Sweet Billy Pilgrim – Longstreth 7.75

The chorus is quite pretty but in general I feel very okay toward the the first part. However I absolutely love how it picks up after three minutes, that’s a beautiful instrumental part. I love the more minimal last part too, it contrasts well with the louder section before it and makes me feel a lot more than anything in the half. So yeah absolutely dig the last two minutes but bot sure if it’s always worth getting through the first part just to hear it.

Endless Forms – Lungs 7.25

Is it a coincidence that this song was used in a series called ELITE? Anyway it has a beautiful atmosphere and great vocals, maybe a bit much reverb. However both composition wise and stylistically it just doesn’t feel super special. I did enjoy it, but am not really gripped by it.

The Magnetic Fields – The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side 7
Ooh sending me such a happy song is somewhat of a risk. After I heard it for a few times I though it was actually something written a lot earlier, the slightly psychedelic pop feeling parts (like the bridge) are pretty great and make me think a little of some Beatles or Syd Barrett songs. But it has neither the same level of musicality of the former or the raw feeling of the latter. Not that it needs to, it’s a pretty cool and happy song, which I dig (just) when I’m in the right mood.

Feels Like Home 6.5
Quite an old song, let’s see if it has aged as well for me as some of my favourite classics. So the instrumentation is quite okay, but the piano and strings are pretty basic. Maybe the mood is a bit too mellow or the singer a bit too careful… Somehow it doesn’t really get through to me. Despite being named Feels Like Home it doesn’t make Home Feel Like That Much, I’m sorry.

Bat For Lashes – The Boys of Summer (Live at EartH, London, 2019) 6.5
I’ve heard the original song quite a bit on the radio at my parents’ but was never a super big fan of it, didn’t hate it either. I immediately dig the atmosphere of this rendition more, the kind of mysterious, dreamy vibe sounds great. However there are some parts about the composition that I don’t like so much. Mostly the keyboard (that is so present in the mix) which keeps playing that same motive over and over again, I’m already bored of it halfway through the song.

Final thoughts
Despite having the lowest highest-score-of-the round so far it was a pretty solid one again! The leader board has been shuffled a bit with the round winner being actually the person with the lowest score last round. Remember peepz, one more round to go before cut-offs. And with the last person only having 2.5 points lower than the 3th person everything is still possible :D

“Sweet Billy Pilgrim – Longstreth 7.75
. . .
So yeah absolutely dig the last two minutes but bot sure if it’s always worth getting through the first part just to hear it.”

So that’s how I feel about most of their songs. Have kind of an oddball verse that blossoms into an awesome chorus. But the lyrics on this one are pretty special, which really sell the verses for me. Fantastic word play and imagery.

Write-ups are as good as done, but have some snippets first  ;D

1. I love the long intro of this song, there’s something about how the vocals are introduced suddenly that gets me every time

2. The story just adds context to the song that makes it all the more compelling

3. The sound design on this song is just sublime; it’s thick and full while still retaining a mix in which all the different sounds have enough breathing space

4. Man wait until this roulette makes me enthusiastic about prog rock again.

5. This song kind of feels like one of Dream Theater’s ballads/slower songs - which isn’t a bad thing per se, but it's just not something I have any interest in listening to

6. Actually I feel this song just ticks off all the clichés of a sad indie song

7. This is indie-folk done just right!

8. I dig the slightly chill, slightly mysterious vibes

9. While repetition can work great in these kind of songs, here it becomes a bit of a drag.

10. This is a good reminder that I really should dig into this band’s discography.

I love how clear the synths and drums sound. The composition is pretty great too, there are some really cool and smooth transitions there. Plus the overall vibe is super chill, honestly can’t wait to dig into this album! And hey, did this song just earn you a place in the finals?

Wintersleep – Miasmal Smoke & The Yellow Bellied Freaks 8.25
I love the long intro of this song, there’s something about how the vocals are introduced suddenly that gets me every time - the vocals are anyway quite sparsely scattered around the song but emotionally powerful when they are there. I dig the post-rock-ish build-up and how the speed starts picking up in the second half of the song. Glad you took a chance with sending a longer song!

Thrice – Daedalus 8.25
Great composition and nicely evocative lyrics. I like how the music reflects the story, especially from ‘why won’t you listen to me’ onwards; The intensity in the last part is just crushing in a perfect way. This is a good reminder that I really should dig into this band’s discography, thanks!

We Lost The See – Bogatyri 8
I’m glad you included the background to this song, the story just adds context to the song that makes it all the more impressive. I love how dooming and kind hopeless the first part sounds, followed by utter intensity. I have been quite lazy when it comes to Post-Rock and just been listening to the same bands when feeling like listening to any, so I am happy to discover more!

Fleet Foxes : Mykonos 8

This is indie-folk done just right! While for me especially folk can quickly become blad this song has enough to keep it interesting. I love the harmonies in the vocal section. And also that Capella-ish middle section with a brief tempo change there making it all that much more dramatic.

Big Big Train – Snowfalls 8
Man wait until this roulette makes me enthusiastic about prog rock again. It reminds me a bit of ‘classic’ prog music I’ve listened to but is more clear sounding and more emotionally relatable. The song might be a bit stretched but I do love how it climaxes in the last two minutes, it’s such a good amplification of those last vocal lines.

Better Oblivion Community Center - Service Road 8
Actually I feel this song just ticks off all the clichés of a sad indie song - but fuck I don’t care, I still really like it. Both singers voices are very emotion-inducing and I like how they sound together. I do feel the song could have ended on a stronger note

Darkside – Heart 7.25
I dig the slightly chill, slightly mysterious vibes. However despite an good start, composition wise I feel there’s too little happening. It mostly relies on simple motives without really that much happening. Still it’s a very pleasant song to listen to an the singer makes it somewhat unique. As a whole it just kind of passes by though.

I Like Trains – Mnemosyne 6.5
There is some nice post-rock-ish atmosphere, and it kind of builds up nicely at the start, but then it ends up not really going anywhere except for familiar ground. While repetition can work great in these kind of songs, here it becomes a bit of a drag. And the sort of climax in the last half minute is not enough to really make up for it, for me.

Mystery – Dear Someone 6.5
This song kind of feels like one of Dream Theater’s ballads/slower thing - which isn’t a bad thing per se, but just not something I have any interest in listening to lately. I feel kind of bored of it about a minute in and then there are still 5 more minutes to go. I appreciate the musicality but it’s just not for me.

Final thoughts
So that’s the end of the regular rounds, many 8’s in this round! Romdrums climbed the score board the last two round and will join Cyril and Tomislav in the final EP round. Thank you all so much for joining! Everyone sent me at least one song from an album I will for sure check out, and most more than that. Can’t wait to dig into all of this (and have actually already checked out a few :) )

The rules for the EP round are in the OP. I want to give you some time to construct a nice EP, so please send before end of this week’s weekend.

For what it's worth, I'm not sure how BBT gets 8 while Dear Someone is only 6.5, I think Dear Someone is a much better song than Snowfalls, and I love both bands.

Also I had no idea home didn't know Daedalus, that's an awesome song.

Big Big Train are definitely stylistically a modern update of a lot of classic prog (especially Genesis), but they are so much more than a clone and definitely worth investing more time in. I almost sent you a longer but in some ways musically similar track called Victorian Brickwork, which is among my all time favorite songs. But I figured the shorter track might play better for these purposes. For my money, nobody else in prog comes close to BBT’s quality of output since 2009. Some people find them a little tame or polite, but everything they do is super high quality (arrangements, performances, production, storytelling, etc.). They are also genuinely great people and very accessible to their fans. Aside from maybe Marillion, they are probably my favorite active band right now.

Sad I missed the cut for the final round, but this was a lot of fun. Done in by my first round entry it appears!

Edit, my reply to Cyril (to give everyone the same information):
From Julien Baker, Solstafir, Oceansize and Mew everything is banned (and from Amendfoil, Amoebas is banned as it was sent in my previous roulette).

They were on time. Good for them, because otherwise... I would listen to their EP on shuffle  ::)

Alright here are the three EPs  ;D

Cyril: Life On A Screen
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0NhPi6aBPlqnIU3ruGoVsK (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0NhPi6aBPlqnIU3ruGoVsK)

1. fun. - Be Calm

Story: A man moves to a new town and feels overwhelmed by the stress it and life and general has caused, but tries to tell himself to be calm and he can get through it all.

Music: This is the only remotely happy song on the EP, in my opinion. Savor it. Have loved this one forever.

2. Spanish Love Songs - Losers, Pt. 2

Story: Flashback to before Be Calm. We see why the man had moved; he couldn't afford to live where he used to, and expresses general frustration with life in general. He knows this won't solve his problems but still wishes for a fresh start all the same.

Music: The newest song on this EP, fresh off an album that came out only months ago and I've already quite grown to like. The catchiest depression you'll ever hear. The spotify listing names it wrong btw.

3. PUP - Scorpion Hill

Story: The man tries to survive in the city but things keep taking a turn for the worse - he loses his job and turns to drinking. Ultimately culminating in a friend finding a gun in his house, that only he could have bought. It is implied that at the end he uses this gun on himself...

Music: This song is kind of a modern masterpiece. And depressing as hell. Sorry.

4. My Chemical Romance - Disenchanted

Story: The man, as he lays dying, reflects on his life as if he was watching it from afar, all the hardships and struggles that lead to his final decision, and ruminating on how pointless it all felt, and how nobody will miss him.

Music: Love how anthemic this song is for how gut-wrenchingly sad it is! Woo! This is not a happy EP!

5. The Reticent - Funeral For A Firefly

Story: From the perspective of the man's lover, anguished by his passing, going through the stages of grief in shock.

Music: This is very out of sync with everything else on this EP, almost intentionally. With a bit of a spicy surprise. I won't say anything else.

6. Glass Beach - Orchids

Story: The lover opts to burn the house down with the man's body still inside, believing they may be reunited in heaven, or amongst the stars.

Music: This song has a guitar line that sounds like a reprise of part of Be Calm, which is an unintentional and neat context.  As someone who has played To the Moon I cannot listen to this song without crying also. I've completely changed the context of it to fit the narrative but it basically works. I have no clue why this is 30 seconds longer on spotify than on the album. I think it might put the EP time slightly over 30 minutes but it ends by the 4 minute mark.

Romdrums: Post Cards From The Road[/b]
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4hccGp50QtXfeoDDnie27B?si=pl_vLQSSS5GDlI3lkbcxEA (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4hccGp50QtXfeoDDnie27B?si=pl_vLQSSS5GDlI3lkbcxEA)

1. Tides From Nebula - Safehaven

2. Aesthesys - Filis Aureis

3. Solkyri - Sad Boys

4. we.own.the.sky - Youth

5. Aesthesys - Apogeion

This is more of a theme than a story, but these five songs are very cinematic, very visual, and somewhat escapist in nature.  I was listening to each album these songs come from today while working from home, and they helped pull me out of a gray day here in Indiana, which is just what I needed while working from home and feeling like I was being grounded and forced to stay in my room until my work was done.  Not a lot of fun!  Anyway, these songs gave me a feeling of being out in the world, driving the open roads, and getting away from my surroundings.  Hope you dig it!

Tomislav: CreepEP
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ELEBktpQqYDbsYqssn43A?si=d7d7wzujR3WZbir9CeQBtA

Basically, it's ep with creepy songs, being lyrically or just by feel.

1. Micah P. Hinson - Beneath the Rose
Don't know what it's about but lyrics are definitely creepy and his voice adds to that creepy atmosphere.

2. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds feat. Kylie Minogue - Where the Wild Roses Grow

This one and next song are off album Murder Ballads and most songs are about murder. Here, protagonist kills a beautiful women when he realizes nothing can't be better than the first day they were together.

3. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - The Kindness of Strangers

Song about a woman Mary Bellows. I think it's fictional story, she was tortured and murdered in her house. It's interesting, if you didn't lsiten to lyrics, it (until near end) wouldn't seem as awful story.

4. Phoebe Bridgers - Killer
Kind of creepy, don't know what it's really about but it mentions serial killer so it fits 😛

5. Phoebe Bridgers - Funeral
Not so much creepy but really sad and depressing song. It's really great song though, hope it won't make you sad...

6. Low - Lullaby
One of my favorite songs ever and it definitely sounds creepy. It's almost 10 minutes long and slow paced but it's worth every second IMO. Here are all the lyrics:

Cross over and turn
Feel the spot don't let it burn
We all want we all yearn
Be soft don't be stern

Lullaby
Was not supposed to make you cry
I sang the words I meant
I sang

Gonna listen to all three of these tomorrow, I know a couple of songs on Cyril's and Tomislav's (I thought everyone and their mother knew Where the Wild Roses Grow, huh), and literally nothing on romdrums' EP, curious about that one.

Also yeah The Reticent is probably going to royally screw up the flow :lol Amazing song though.

tomi EP review:
those nick cave songs are better than any other nick cave songs i've ever heard
killer still isn't a particularly good phoebe bridgers song, might be one of my least faves on that album, funeral is great tho
lullaby at one point has a melody that sounds like part of billie eilish's you should see me in a crown and now i can't help but imagine a mashup of these two songs that would be completely ill fitting

Listened to all three EPs:

Cyril's has a nice flow even with The Reticent song. However the general style of the EP (excluding Funeral for a Firefly) isn't quite my thing. Strangely I liked that fun. song more than I did in my first roulette. Still a pleasant listen though, made it to the end and enjoyed some of it.

romdrums has some big balls, sending an instrumental EP like that. Nice enough but the only song I remember is the last one.

Tomi's is good but I knew four songs on it already. Really enjoyed the closing track. Definitely my favourite EP out of three so far.

Here's one snippet for every song and one snippet for every EP.  ;D

Song snippets:

1. Love how this song starts kind of cinematic, it's a great way too start the journey of this EP

2. Her voice sounds so gorgeous here; the vocal melodies are more interesting, the sparsely used harmonies great.

3. I have to at least mention the production here, it's bad in a really, really good way: parts of it are flat out noisy and unclear, yet it still breathes and makes for a great listening experience

4. It does take really long to get to the point

5. I like how the mood of this song is immediately more intense than the rest of the songs on this EP - kind of pulls me back in.

6. Dig the positive vibes this song has.

7. While the atmospheric parts sound great, the production on this song is just too flat in the louder sections.

8. Love how this is so high-energy while still portraying a low, depressed mood

9. It lacks both the interesting composition or the more rawer feelings of the songs surrounding it

10. I just love it when harsh vocals are used like this!

11. That last half minute is just heavenly and makes the song

12. Love the vocal melodies, They’re both very enchanting and catchy.

13. Kind of waiting for it to pass, or something interesting to happen but it doesn't…

14. The man and woman's voice together make it feel  kind of like this is a dialogue or a mutual sentiment to me

15. Musically maybe a bit more straightforward than the previous song but the feelings do mostly make up for it.

16. While it has a nice build up and atmospheres it is kind of post-rock by the numbers

17. Probably the best climax on this EP

EP Snippets:

1. While the whole EP felt only just pleasant but passable at the start, it has already grown on me somewhat.

2. This EP is of to a great start, but then you completely lose me in the middle before drawing me back in near the end.

3. Honestly, the only thing that would have made me like the EP more is excluding <song-name>

Title: Re: STAY AT HOME - MINI HOME ROULETTE v.2 EP Reveals! Match the Snippets!
Post by: Crow on May 03, 2020, 04:06:35 PM
10 literally can't be anything other than Funeral For A Firefly as it's the only song on any of the three EP's with harsh vocals  :lol

1 could be Be Calm, 8 could be Scorpion Hill. Not so sure on the rest.
14 feels like it could be Funeral For a Firefly if not for the fact that 10 is already Funeral For a Firefly too but I think it's one of the nick cave songs

I'm gonna guess #3 is my EP snippet too.

FINAL ROULETTE RESULTS MY BOIS

----------------------------------------------------

Life on a Screen: 21

Fun - be calm: 9.25
Love how this song starts kind of cinematic, it's a great way too start the journey of this EP. Really dig the musical-like vibes, remind me a little of The Dear Hunter, similar feels too. The composition and progression is great, easily remains interesting and gripping throughout. The instrumentation (especially the orchestral elements) follow the lyrics so well, making this song very much into a story.

Spanish Love Songs - Losers: 8
Love the raw emotion in the singers voice. And that's such a strong chorus! Musically maybe a bit more straightforward than the previous song but the feelings do mostly make up for it. Solid - nothing much more to say about it.

PUP - Scorpion Hill: 8.75

Some nice feels from the start, the additional voices are used really well here. Absolutely love the transition at around the minute mark, actually this song just does transitions really well, there’s some great switches of pace and mood throughout. The singer’s voice is great too and some of their vocal lines keep getting stuck in my head. I love how this has so much energy while still portraying depressed thoughts. That’s a dramatic ending too!

My Chemical Romance - Disenchanted 6.5

This song is the only point where I kind of lose the EP, it's hard to exactly point my finger on it, but it just feels a little too polished maybe? Maybe I would have enjoyed it more out of context but right now it lacks both the interesting composition or the more rawer feelings of the songs surrounding it.

The reticent: funeral for a friend 8
Gorgeous atmospheres. The different voices are a nice touch. Love how the male singer’s voice gets more gritty and the song slowly gets darker. That change of mood around 4 minutes is just needing to happen and so dramatic. Those harsh vocals are used so well here, really adds a lot of power.

Glass beach - orchids 9
This song is directly of to a great start with some slightly psychedelic feels, but my boi that is a huge chorus. Love how the guitar replays the chorus melody here with the voice slowly coming through again finally erupting in a big climax. And I have to at least mention the production here, it's bad in a really, really good way: parts of it are kind of noisy and unclear, yet it still breathes and makes for a great listening experience.

Flow and story: 4.5

First of all props for the story, it really enhances the EP and makes all the lyrical themes fit together. Musically I feel the songs really fit the theme great and there's a nice kind of build up climaxing in funeral for a friend. The flow is good in general, honestly the only thing that would have made me like the EP more is excluding Disenchanted. There are three songs here that are easily among my favorites I received in this roulette, thanks for that!

----------------------------------------------------

CreepEP  18.5

Micah P Henson - Close your eyes 9
This has some nice dreamy vibes from the start. Definitely a song that just makes me want to close my eyes. The repetitive lyrics work great here as there is the instruments, vocal melodies and change of voice still move the song forward; I just love how the song progresses, that last half minute is just heavenly and makes the song. Definitely a great start to this EP.

Nick Cave - Where the wild roses grows 7

I like the vocal melodies, they are both very enchanting and catchy. While the lyrics "on the first day, on the second day..." are kind of building up to something happening it does make the structure kind of predictable. Overall it's pleasant but I am not getting into it too much.

Nick Cave The Kindness of Strangers 6

Sadly there’s nothing here that really grips me, kind of mellow mood throughout. I guess he tries to convey some story but most of what he says is just not that interesting, quite repetitive and he sings just soo slow. Kind of waiting for it too pass, or something interesting to happen but it doesn't...

Phoebe Bridgers - Killer 7.5

Again a moody song, but this time it comes through more. The lyrics are a lot more powerful - “I hope you kiss my rotten head and pull the plug” . Love the harmony and the chorus, the man and woman's voice together make it feel kind of like this is a dialogue or a mutual sentiment to me. The composition isn’t the most interesting though.

Phoebe Bridgers - Funeral 8.5
Okay this song hits me a lot more than Killer. The lyrics are very evocative. Her voice sounds so gorgeous here; the vocal melodies are more interesting, the sparsely used harmonies great. It does such a great job of conveying sad feelings while also offering some warmth and comfort to sooth them.

Low - Lullaby 7.5
I like how it starts kind of bare with the atmosphere and lyrics being the main focus. However after the vocals are gone it becomes easy to drift off, it relies mostly on the same motive that was played over and over again from pretty much the start of the song - without that much happening. There are some really great and intense parts near the end. However, it does take really long to get to the point and the ending itself isn’t that strong.

Flow and story 3.5
There’s a nice theme running through the songs, death is part of most songs in someway. The flow is okay, not jarring, but lullaby does feel slightly like the odd one out. Overall this EP is of to a great start, but then you completely lose me in the middle before drawing me back in near the end.

----------------------------------------------------

Postcards from the road 18.5

Tides from Nebula – Safehaven 7.5
Some nice evocative vibes in the start setting the mood for this EP right. I like how they used the “oooh” vocals here. I tend to drift of quit easily during some of the quieter middle sections but the last 2 minutes or so are great. However over all, while it has a nice build up and atmospheres, it is kind of post-rock by the numbers

Aesthesys – Filis Aurelius 8

Dig the positive vibes this song has. Some of the triangle-ish sounds are almost christmas-like. Definitely makes me drift to positive places. There’s some nice strings especially those starting around 2 minutes. The climax is great, love that high melody coupled with those intense drums and instrumentation.

Solkyri – Sad Boys 8
There are some great progressions in this song and it builds up pretty well. It probably has the best climax on this EP, love how it gets louder after thinking it already reached the tops.

we.own.the.sky – Youth 6.5

While the atmospheric parts sound great, the production on this song is just too flat in the louder sections, such as the one around 2:20. It’s a shame because there’s some cool stuff going on but it becomes kind of annoying to listen to

Aesthesys – Apogeion 7.5

I like how the mood of this song is immediately more intense than the rest of the songs on this EP - kind of pulls me back in. Love the mood around 3 minutes in, it’s kind of carefully treading, waiting for danger to come. The climax is pretty good but not too special.

Flow and story 3.5
Not much of a story here but it is a very coherent whole. The whole EP felt only just pleasant but passable at the start, but has grown on me quite a bit. I’m sure I will check out some of these bands while studying.
