Title: RAY ALDER – Announces sophomore solo album “II”
Post by: MinistroRaven on August 23, 2019, 06:39:54 AM
After various successful releases with his main band in the previous years, InsideOutMusic are now proud to welcome longtime Fates Warning vocalist and frontman Ray Alder to a new worldwide co-operation for his solo releases.

Ray Alder checked in with the following comment: “Hi everyone! I am so happy to announce that I have signed a deal with InsideOutMusic for my solo project and the debut album “What The Water Wants”. I want to thank InsideOutMusic for giving me the opportunity to record and share this album with the world. For the last year I have been writing with Mike Abdow, (Fates Warning touring guitarist), guitarist/bassist Tony Hernando (Lords Of Black) and my longtime friend Craig Anderson (Ignite) on drums. The album was mixed by Simone Mularoni (Rhapsody, Michael Romeo, DGM, etc.), who worked tirelessly with me to give this project the great sound we felt it deserved. I have had the ideas for a while but never had the time to actually sit down and write. But since Fates Warning had taken a break from writing and touring I finally had the chance to assemble the album. I hope you all enjoy it as much as we did writing and recording it!”

Ray Alder’s first solo album for the label is entitled “What The Water Wants” and includes 10 melodic and versatile songs created with assistance from guitarists Mike Abdow (Fates Warning touring member) and Tony Hernando (Lords Of Black) as well as drummer Craig Anderson (Ignite, Crescent Shield). The album was mixed by Simone Mularoni (Rhapsody, Michael Romeo, DGM) and will be released worldwide on October 18th, 2019.

Very simple, straightforward and even mainstream but Ray's voice works amazingly well  in this style.

Sounds interesting. I wish he got a couple big names in prog metal to guest on the album, though. Just to attract more people who don’t know who the rest of the band on the album.

I agree with Chad in principle. There is loads of great music being released every year, regularly. Maybe not consistently (this year seems to have several instances of multiple albums releasing on the same day but the release window has been very thin between March and August) but the good stuff is out there. And I've realized that often when I claim a year is 'weak' on music it's just relative to other years, or I've completely missed artists I've never heard of, only to discover that album years down the road.

This song has already gotten a bit stale on repeat listens; I like Ray's voice but the song itself is extremely commercial and safe and I feel like I've already heard all it has to offer. Still keeping the album on the radar though.

I tend to just go with Occam's razor, and figure that if I haven't heard of a band, the most likely explanation is that they suck.

I don't know why but I could never get in to his vocals in either FW or Redemption. They aren't bad, and I liked this song well enough. *shrug

Not sure that's the gist of Occam's razor.  What you're saying is that if you haven't heard of something, it sucks?  Everything sucks up until the point that YOU hear and like it?

I'm with you. I check out more new music than bosk (judging from his posts in "Your favourite albums from *year*" every year), and I still thought there were amazing years for music and weak years for music... only to discover amazing albums released in those "weak" years a few years later.

There's a lot of awesome stuff out there.

I wish there was a little more going on during the verses of "Crown of Thorns". It sounds a little barren musically, but with Ray's vocals being so stellar, I can overlook it. That chorus is a fucking winner, though. Awesome.

Listened to the album today and I must say I like it a lot. Actually I like it way more than the new Vanden Plas album, which I didn't expect at all.

Favourite track is probably Shine so far.

This album is absolutely killer.  I've had it on repeat all day and have yet to grow tired of it.  Ray is sounding better than ever and the music has plenty of variety - some heavy tunes, some ballads, some groovy things and everything in between.

this is just okay to me - I like Ray's voice but this sounds like a midtempo alt rock album and I was expecting something with more oomph

he's the star of the party imo, he sounds great - the single is the weakest link

I just got through my second listen. Really cool record. It mixes much of the styles from Ray's past bands (including a little bit of Engine to my ears), and has some really beautiful melodic moments. It's probably the original lineup QR fan boy in me, but I could swear I hear a little bit of atmosphere that is reminiscent of some of the Mindcrime segues (Waiting for 22/My Empty Room) mixed with Promised Land (someone brought that up earlier, if not on here, it was on social media somewhere). There's a bit of Fates obviously as well.

Really, really good record. So glad he did this solo album. Something to tide us over until Fates drops their next record. I know Ray has said he hopes it'll be a long time before he does another one (because he wants Fates to keep going), but honestly, I really hope he can find time to do solo records like this in-between Fates albums and tours. It was really nice to hear a cross-section of his career on a disc like this. Tony Hernando (did I get his name right) and Mike Abdow did an outstanding job writing the music. Great stuff. I hear Abdow's style embedded in it quite a bit. Hoping he gets to contribute a little more to Fates on the next Fates record.

Just got in my first full listen this weekend.  I'm really liking it!  I think I listened to the first song, "Lost," about 10 times before moving on to the rest of the disc.  That's probably my favorite tune, and I could actually hear it fitting on a FW album.  The album is so solid that I think Jim should consider using one of Mike Abdow's songs on the next FW album and having the rest of the band give it the FW touch.  Congrats to Ray.  He's a legendary progressive metal voice and deserves a little solo success. :)

Great album. I love the melodies and arrangements a lot. I know Ray is supposed to be the shining star of this album, and really he shines, but if this is Mike's songwriting audition for Fates, I hope Jim listens to this and includes him on the next album. Not that Jim needs any help! But I'd love to hear some of this on Fates as well.

Late to the party, but I really like the songs with Abdow - Under Dark Skies, The Road and The Killing Floor are my favorites, and like Milena, I hope this will lead to him writing for Fates in the future. I'm not sold on the material with Hernando though, because the riffing is too generic for my taste, and having two different guitarists/cowriters gives the album a fragmented feel.

I've pretty much been spinning this album nonstop during the quarantine. It gets better and better with every listen. The Abdow/Alder duo seems to be something special. It would be great if future Fates Warning could even incorporate some more Abdow, because I'd love to see what Alder/Matheos/Abdow could do together. I've decided that my favorite song is "The Killing Floor." Abdow's solo is freaking awesome and Ray kills it lyrically and vocally.

RAY ALDER – Announces sophomore solo album “II”

Launches first single/lyric video “This Hollow Shell”
Pre-order started!

Quote
Following the fantastic feedback for the first solo album by Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder “What The Water Wants” back in 2019, InsideOutMusic are pleased to announce the upcoming worldwide release of the follow-up effort “II” on June 9th, 2023.

Once again, just like for the “What The Water Wants” debut, the new album was written with guitarists Mike Abdow (Fates Warning touring member) and Tony Hernando (Lords Of Black) – who both also performed bass guitar on their own songs –, features drummer Craig Anderson (Ignite, Crescent Shield) and was mixed by Simone Mularoni (Rhapsody, Michael Romeo, DGM). Ray Alder’s second album is simply entitled “II”, but in musical terms this is a much more revealing, exploratory piece of work than its predecessor.

Ray Alder checked in with the following comment about “II”, whose cover artwork can be seen above:

“When we wrote the first solo album I wanted to try some different musical styles. I didn’t want it to be really heavy, but more musical with catchy choruses. I think we did a pretty good job on that first one.
But with this new album I wanted the music and lyrics to be darker and heavier. I think Mike did a fantastic job with the music. He listened to what I was saying and thinking musically. Tony knows that I like the big choruses and somewhat traditional sound. And of course Craig did an amazing job on the drums as usual. It's an honor to be able to work with them.

This album is more of a reflection of what I heard going forward as a solo artist. Longer songs, deeper lyrics and really pushing myself vocally. I hope that whoever listens to it enjoys it as much as I did while working on it...”

With the album’s pre-order starting today, you can now check out the opening track “This Hollow Shell” in a lyric-video created by Cloud Music Typography here:
https://youtu.be/mAtTyoNWjxo

Ray Alder added about “This Hollow Shell” as follows:

“’This Hollow Shell’ is the first song to be released from my new solo album “II”. When I first heard this song I knew that it was going to be one of my favorites on the new album. It was dark and moody with tons of changes. It was like a huge blank canvas that I couldn’t wait to begin painting on. In the end it became one of the songs on the album that I am most proud of.”

This is the complete tracklisting of the upcoming album:

RAY ALDER – “II” (51:20)
1. This Hollow Shell (06:02)
2. My Oblivion (04:36)
3. Hands Of Time (06:08)
4. Waiting For Some Sun (04:29)
5. Silence The Enemy (04:41)
6. Keep Wandering (05:51)
7. Those Words I Bled (05:51)

I posted this in the FW thread, but...

Absolutely killer track. Wonderful moodiness, and then a couple kicks to the face at points. Ray hit a homerun with this track for sure. I tweeted at him asking if Mike or Tony wrote the music to it. The solo sounds like Mike.

Really great launch of II. Looking forward to the record.

Really nice song, love the whole tone and atmosphere of it.

I don't have much to go off but from the solos Mike has done in FW, there's a few little things in this song that I think it's him on the solo too.  Amazing solo also.

like the new song.

The thing I don't often get with him is the lack of mention of his previous solo project Engine. I get that this album is the 2nd album under his own name, but really, Engine was his baby and like a solo series of albums.

Really like those Engine records!

They were modern-sounding but with just the right dose of melancholy, and great vocals from Alder.

He played a few Engine songs when he played at Prog Power. I have to admit, I don't remember at the time whether Engine was considered a solo project or if it was indeed a new band they were trying to get off the ground. Either way, enjoy both those records a lot.

I don't exactly remember either, but my recollection leans more towards it being a band proper.

Listening to Superholic as we speak, btw...

May well be wrong but I recall them promoting Engine as a band not solo.  Might see if I can find some old articles somewhere...

IIRC, Engine was Ray, Joey Vera on bass, Bernie Versailles on guitar...and don't remember the drummer.

Goes to Wiki...Pete Parada.

Damn good band.

Bring it on, man. I'm really enjoying the new album. Ray is a rare example of a singer whose range has diminished over the years, but his delivery got WAY better. The songs are great...heavy at times, moody here and there...and Michael Abdow's work on the album is absolutely stellar.

There's embargo until two weeks before release date

So something like what we hear on songs such as "One," is what I think based on those comments. Wouldn't be a bad thing. And we all know how Ray loves "One" (as do I!)

Anyway thanks for the comments and looking forward to reading/hearing more when into those couple weeks pre-release then ;)

New song is up, going to need a few more listens it's not resonating the same as This Hollow Shell.  Still quite unexpected, and love the way Ray's voice has aged.

Check out the track “Waiting For Some Sun” in an atmospheric video created by Manu Giménez / MG Media Productions here: https://youtu.be/hbOoZjzO_HM

Ray Alder comments about “Waiting For Some Sun” as follows:
“I wanted a totally different style for a song on the new album. Something that set itself apart from the rest. Mike and I got to talking and I said I want a song where the chorus is in the beginning but builds and gets bigger every time it repeats. Also dark with a lot of attitude. This is the music he came up with. I personally love how the vocal melody has nothing to do with the guitars. A sort of chaos that makes sense. At least to me...”

Wow, I like Ray and all, but this new song is a big bucket of nothing. Those heavy guitars are tuned so low it hurts my ears.
Maybe it'll sink in with repeated listens, but honestly, I'm not all that motivated. I'll drop the needle on the new album for sure, but..ugh.

I definitely did not expect this. So far, both songs surprise me and I really like them. I prefer the verses to the choruses as Ray's voice is not so subdued there. This album is getting even more promising. The song does end a bit abruptly for me, though, kind of left underdeveloped and underwhelming. At least on first listen.

Well done and good questions.

You may want to go back and correct a couple spelling mistakes Mike Abdow has a w at the end of his name, etc., things like that. Give it a once over to make sure all that is corrected. But your English is way better than my Spanish! Glad you got to talk to him and thanks for sharing.

I have the self titled Engine CD.  Spun it yesterday and it was enjoyable.  Definitely a blatant attempt at what was going on at that time but it was a nice mix of heavier Disconnected style Fates with say Psycho Motel with a little Soundgarden thrown in.  Ray sounds great on this one.  Not something I'll revisit often but a solid output.

Yeah, that's the one I have.  I can see it not being your thing.  I feel they focussed too much on trying to fit in with the alternate grunge thing at the time and that hurts it.  The ideas and groove is there but some prog flair and a little more experimentation would have helped too.  It also seems like they did a St. Anger and deliberately omitted guitar solos and tried to make everything as simple as possible in that department.

I do feel however it won't top What The Water Wants, only negative being feel the heavier more modern slant of this one has left it lacking as many singalongs perhaps?

But it's cool as and the highlights are of course huge and deary me that voice!  ;D :metal

I gotta say, "Changes" is one of the best songs Ray has done with any band -- Fates Warning, Redemption, Engine, etc. That song is absolutely killer and the vocals are in Ray's sweet spot. I also noticed he sings it without many vocal harmonies -- it's just him singing with raw emotion straight from the gut. And the lyrics. Just wow. So simple, but so powerful. An all-time Alder classic.

Yeah, it is a banger. The whole album is really high quality songwriting. On a side note, more FW related but still, YT played this on its own which I had completely forgotten - FW covering Dio - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXaMFKTgBB0.

And on another side note, it's about high time Arjen gets Ray to sing the main parts of a good Ayroen album.

Really enjoying this album, I was a fan of the debut but this is on another level (IMO).  All of the players on this deserve a ton of credit for writing some great music.

Ray sounds amazing, he's getting better with age - as much as I loved the early Fate's stuff he was on, I prefer recent-Ray's approach to vocal melodies (lumping in the last two Fate's records, too)
