"Frisson" is the shiver down the spine, with goosebumps, you sometimes get when you listen to exciting music. Apparently there are people who don't experience it, but on this forum I kinda assume everybody gets it.
-
I only know of one of my friends who doesn't experience that, and that's because he has nerve damage in body and has bolts running through it
-
I wish I did. It sounds awesome.
-
I'm easily overwhelmed by music, but I can't say I experienced that exact physical sensation.
-
I get it sometimes when hearing great music. But sadly it is a feeling that goes away after a while, meaning if I hear the song that makes me "frisson" often enough I don't get it anymore.
-
I actually get it when I'm explaining something I'm passionate about to someone who seems receptive.
-
I get this all the damn time.
-
Sometimes that single note does it for me.
-
Never heard that term for it, but yes, I experience it. I figured everyone experiences it too.
Some DT frisson moments that come to mind:
LtL F#
Scarred- "my soul exposed, it calms me to know that I won't"
Lifting Shadows- the last "and she listens openly"
Octavarium- Almost every note bend in the ending guitar solo with french horn, especially the trill.
SFAM- Opening of Overture
Lines in the sand- End of the middle guitar solo. Great buildup in the preceding 2 minutes.
ACOS- ~15:30 guitar solo. I like the use of wah as a filter more than an emphasis effect.
-
It happens now and again, yes.
:zydar:
-
All the time, but as far as I remember I had it every time I was listening Helloween's Immortal from The Dark Ride album. Also, It happens with some Pink Floyd songs, for example - Hey You or High Hopes. :tup
-
Yep. It's not all the time but when the circumstances are right.
I've noticed that the instances I've experienced it with lately have been when I hear an older song that takes me back some years to a moment or a period of my life....and I really stop to recall it and think on it while listening....
-
Yep, it doesn't happen very often, usually when I hear a new song that is great or when I listen to a song that I really love after a while.
-
I get it a fair amount. Even though my attention to them has naturally wanned over time, one of the many reasons DT became my "FavBandForLife" is due to the high amount of frisson responses I had to their music. Especially when compared to other music and musicians.
I get it during conversations at times too. I will say I would lament not having this response.

Yea, when songs hit a certain emotional memory, I definitely get it. Sometimes when the music is just right too especially at a live concert.
-
Wasn't aware of the term but I get it a lot. Can't explain exactly what causes it but if an artist doesn't give me that feeling I won't love them. I may appreciate them just fine, but I'll never fall head over heels for them. Porcupine Tree and Opeth are two bands that I can appreciate as good music, but they don't give me *that* feeling
-
I get it all the time. I still get it on songs that I've listened to my whole life. Most recently, Steven Wilson's Pariah hit me like a ton of bricks, right at the part at the end of the second chorus where Ninet sings that high vocal line and the drums come in with the tremolo picked guitar melody. I about crashed my car it overwhelmed me so much! I remember getting that feeling the first time I listened to Images and Words and the intro to Under a Glass Moon started. Such a huge, majestic, soaring line, and I just sat on my grandparents' porch entranced. Good times!
-
I have gotten that feeling when getting my hair cut, assuming that the stylist keeps quit and lets me drift off. I have also gotten the feeling when listening to music.
-
I get it when I pee.

Yes. If it's particularly strong, it can create a little bit of involuntary neck movement, which is kind of embarassing if it happens in public. :lol
-
I get it. Hasn't really happened lately.
-
Not really a shiver down the spine, but goosebumps, yes. Definitely.
-
Oh wow, I didn't know that was the term for it...and it's equally awesome as the sensation! Yeah, I get it a lot when I'm either just intensely into a song, or when I'm feeling a strong emotional connection to a song. Which might sound one in the same but...one might be me simply really into rocking out to the ending half of BTBAM's Colors, which doesn't have as much to do with emotion (sans nostalgia, which is indeed a huge factor in me experiencing frission). On the other hand I might be listening to a very calm song like Devin Townsend's Where You've Been and get it all the same simply because I have a really strong connection to the song emotionally.
Nowadays I tend to get it more in relation to nostalgia and/or emotion (and when it's both...hoo boy...it's like a...spinal blowjob...although...that sounds disgusting. And yet...mmmm).
-
I do get goosebumps from time to time when listening to certain songs or symphonies. Say, the ending of Mahler's 2nd Symphony, or DT's Octavarium, or many moments in The Astonishing (Chosen, Hymn of a Thousand Voices, Astonishing).

The staff at JB Hifi get it when you walk in too ;D

I get it, but not from everything. The things that almost always do it are:
- the medley part of "In The Cage" on 3SL, by Genesis
- Drops of Jupiter, by Train (when he sings the "Tell me..." part)
- He Stopped Loving Her Today, by George Jones
- the keyboard part at about 4:30 in Awaken, by Yes
-
Huh, learned a new word. I always thought this was called piloerection but that may just be the goosebumps part. But being cold can give you goosebumps and shivers. I don't consider that the same thing as piloerection.
Anyway, yeah, I get this all the time with music. Sometimes even while reading a really good book.
-
What?? ;)
Never at home, but during live gigs: yes. But that may have a different name (like goosebumps, tears or whatever).
-
There's a joke in there somewhere...
-
It happens to me often with music. Especially at concerts or when I'm by myself listening to my favorite music at high volumes. Music has the power to touch nerves you never realized you had.
I've had the same sensation while witnessing something spectacular in nature too, just on visual experiences.
-
Yes, but it goes away after I've heard the song a few times.

Does it ever come back? I know for me, if I don't hear it for a while, I'll listen to the 3SL medley (especially in the car) and it'll hit me like it was new. I love that.
-
Nope, never had it. Honestly, I wasn't even aware it was a genuine thing, I just thought when people talked about their hair standing on end it was a figurative expression.
I learned something new today!

That still gets me as well, and I've been listening to that medley for over 30 years. Listening to 3SL is one of my earliest musical memories.

Speaking of frisson, I had it all the way through https://teamrock.com/news/2017-09-22/spocks-beard-premiere-made-alive-overture-live-video (https://teamrock.com/news/2017-09-22/spocks-beard-premiere-made-alive-overture-live-video)... :hefdaddy

I used to get it more frequent but these days it's pretty rare that a song will get me to a state like that. I LOVE when it happens though, at those times I appreciate how powerful and wonderful music can be that can convey a feeling like that.
What's interesting is what actually makes you get that feeling and for me it's very random and can be everything from a section in a song, a certain melody, a chord progression or just hearing vocal harmonies in a band setting or A cappella in some form. Just hearing someone with a beautiful voice can be enough for me.
I do think that for the most part that feeling comes from harmonies, chord progressions and melodies that you've heard before or feels familiar in some ways even if it's a song you've never heard before you can still get it because when you hear it you get a feeling of comfort and pleasure. As someone mentioned nostalgia can also a big part, I think.
To mention some random occasions, crank this up (https://youtu.be/2EDIDCdy5Es?t=1m8s) and you might get a few goosebumps like I did the first time I heard it, make sure to stick until the end. Hearing my country's national anthem (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1ZlAzVrdZY) or a nice arrangement of Star Spangled Banner like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCmk88S2sdQ) or when a giant crowd sings Rule Britannia (https://youtu.be/ZZkofOGY3fU?t=4m19s). I think the most recent was when I heard this wonderful rendition of Nessun Dorma by Jonas Kaufman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN-JCdM4or0).

I don't experience frission. My block of uranium is not Enriched so it can't maintain a frission reaction.
-
I only experience fussion.

The first time I heard Alex's solo on The Garden I got a case so bad I thought I was paralyzed.
-
Yeah, I mainly get it with lyrics that really hit home. I get it whenever I hear Comfortably Numb during the chorus, especially the lines:
"Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am"
&
"I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone"
-
So I was at work yesterday and the kids put on The Lion King. I got shivers when Circle of Life played at the beginning :hefdaddy
Love my job sometimes :heart
