So out of all of DT's backing vocals (including James backing himself), which is the best for you?
Mine is probably in Voices, the "Seen my diary on the newsstand, Seems we've lost the truth to quicksand, It's a shame no one is praying"
Yours?
I really like the ones in Fatal Tragedy:
Without love, without truth
There can be no turning back
Without faith, without hope
There can be no peace of mind
I really like the following on This Dying Soul. Specifically the LAB version.
Now that you can see all you have done
It's time to take that step into the kingdom
All your sins will only make you strong
And help you break right through the prison wall
Innocence caressing me
I never felt so young before
There was so much life in me
Still I longed to search for more
I love the harmonies here.
For live stuff, the choruses from Lines In The Sand on Once In A LIVEtime.
For studio, it's the "Until I show desire for revenge" and "As long as I have to die in the attempt" harmonies from To Live Forever.
Justifying violence
Citing from the Holy Book
Teaching hatred
In the name of God

This one is great, but I don't like when James live goes for the upper register. I like it better when it flows in the same range as before.

Indeed this is a great example! I love it as well, the live version feels flat in comparison. Curious how JP and MP don't backup-sing here. (I mention MP since I'm thinking of the Live Scenes from NY version)
Some good ones. I like JP's in the call/response part of The Silent Man.
I quite like Portnoy's backing vocals in the Test that stumped them all on the Score dvd.
I definitely agree with the "see my diary on the newsstand" part of voices, it is a really great moment. If it counts, my favorite is the chorus to Lines in the Sand, specifically the way James and Dug sing "Drawing Lines in the Saaaaaaaaaaand"
+1 for Diary

I love these too, either JP version, Petrucci and Purdell sound so alike. Also love Petrucci's super high backing in ITNOG live at Budokan.
Kevin Moore in Space Dye Vest. :hat

Nailed it.
For some reason this part from A Nightmare To Remember stands out to me:
In peaceful sedation I lay half awake
And all of the panic inside starts to fade
Hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony
My favorite is probably in Along for the Ride. The last chorus has some great backing vocals throughout, but my favorite part is the "I don't believe we're in this alone..." part. So good!

Oh, this one for me also now when you mentioned it!
Silent Man as well here.
B.Lee
Last chorus of Anna Lee. Reminds me of old Elton John backing vocals.
I've always loved Petrucci's falsetto vocals during the chorus in LAB ITNOG.
The "Aahs" in the last 3 minutes of Repentance, if they count.
The backing vocals in Home are pretty great. Portnoy's harmonies are awesome on this song. But as someone said before, the best backing vocals are in the Beautiful Agony section on A Nightmare to Remember.
"In peaceful sedation I lay half awake
And all of the panic inside starts to fade
Hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony"
I get chills every time I hear it.
Lifting Shadows of a Dream. Hands down.
Takin' in the view from the outside
Feelin' like the underdog.
Watchin' through the window I'm on the outside
Living like the underdog.
I absolutely love that backing vocal from As I Am. So badass.

These. And I would add the two pre-chorus sections in As I Am, "I've been trying.." and "I've been wasting..", love them on both L@B and album version.
My
absolute favorite though is a JLB/MP delivery on two lines from Home on the LSFNY DVD, "I never thought that I.." and "But I can't resist myself..", gets me pumping every time! I'm not sure but I think what they do there might be the opposite of vocal harmony, is it vocal dissonance? I have no idea, but I love it. I'm not sure it was voluntary either cause I haven't heard it in any other live performance of the song, it was a perfect sound mixing job in terms of volumes balance between MP and JLB IMO.
Not really backing vocals, but I've always loved the call and response type thing between Mike and JLB in the first verse of TGP.

Same here, first one that came to mind. It's even better when you hear the isolated vocal track too.
