I didn't see a poll like this, so I created one
Some of my top tracks are Lord Nafaryus, A Tempting Offer, 2285 Entr'acte, The Path That Divides and Our New World
-
After only 3 full spins:
The Gift of Music
When Your Time Has Come
A Life Left Behind
Moment of Betrayal
Our New World
-
Three Days, The Gift of Music, Act of Faythe, Our New World, Lord Nafaryus. It was a tough call between Lord Nafaryus and Dystopian Overture. All excellent tracks. :tup
-
1. Our New World
2. A New Beginning
3. The Path That Divides
4. My Last Farewell
5. A Life Left Behind
I can extend this up to ten. It would have included Ravenskill, Act of Faythe, Savior in the Square, When Your Time Has Come, and Three Days.
-
The 5 NOMAC tracks! ;D
Seriously though:
The Gift of Music
A Better Life
A Savior in the Square
A New Begining
Moment of Betrayal
Thinking more about this, Idd probably change Savior to Our New World, but those are currently my picks.
Im interested in the results of this poll.
-
Man, picking just 5 is pretty hard.
I'm assuming most of us have only heard the album once or a couple of time, so my first very first impressions are:
1. Three Days: Man, for a track that was teased by pointing out a swingjazz section and ragtime piano's, I didn't expect the person to shine most on this song would be James, what a killer performance.
2. The Walking Shadow: I guess I'm a sucker for the heavier 'theatrical' songs, this track is a lot of fun.
3. A New Beginning: Many have pointed it out already, but the instrumental in the end is amazing, chorus is catchy, and I like how uplifting this sounds overall.
4. A Better Life: Those verses are so damn powerful, I highly appreciate the calm piano in the background.
5. Moment of Betrayal: I actually didn't like this the first time I heard it from that radio show, but this was one of the quickest growers ever. Huge chorus with an epic feeling, and of course the intro is magnificent.
-
I enjoyed it more on a 2nd listen. Still unsure about many parts. My current top 5:
1) A Better Life
2) The Gift of Music
3) A New Beginning
4) Heaven's Cove
5) Lord Nafaryus
-
Three days, it is just too awesome.
-
Favorites so far:
A New beginning (number one, easily)
Brother, can you hear me?
Heaven's cove
Act of Faythe
Astonishing
Also worth mentioning: The Gift of music, Lord Nafaryus, Three days, A Life left behind, The Road to revolution, Moment of betrayal, The Path that divides, The Walking shadow, My last farewell.
Not that the other songs are without their strengths, obviously. These are just my favorites right now.
-
I have listened it only once so far...
But, A New Beginning might be one of the best DT songs in a decade.
-
Listened to it twice now, and can't pick a favorite.I have like 10 favorites. I love this album!
-
Not necessarily in this order:
Lord Nafaryus
Three Days
Brother, Can You Hear Me?
A Life Left Behind
Astonishing
-
I have listened it only once so far...
But, A New Beginning might be one of the best DT songs in a decade.
I agree. The song was great until the Instrumental, but then it just took off to another level.
-
Three Days beating Our New World? Come on, guys. :p
-
I'm not sure, but after a few listens the ones that stood out were
Lord Nafaryus
A Savior in the Square
Three Days
Moment of Betrayal
Our New World
It will possibly change as I get more familiar with the album.
-
So far my favorites are
Moment of Betrayal
A New Beginning
Dystopian Overture
Losing Faythe
Three Days
-
Forcing myself to pick, I'd go with:
A New Beginning
Moment Of Betrayal
My Last Farewell
Hymn Of A Thousand Voices
Our New World
Hymn really, really stands out for me. Naturally, the solo in A New Beginning is incredible (and beautifully/sadly too short), and the groove of Our New World is undeniable, Hymn just feels so .... fulfilling. Within the context of the music, just.... folksy and drool-worthy!
-
The Gift of Music
Lord Nafaryus
Three Days
Moment of Betrayal
Our New World
But I would also put
A Tempting Offer
A New Beginning (actually kind of wish I put this on the poll)
The Path that Divides
The Walking Shadow
-
I voted:
A Life Left Behind
Chosen
A New Begining
Moment of Betrayal
Begin Again (am I the only one who loves this song?)
-
A New Beggining, but my favorite part from the album is The X Aspect/A New Beggining stretch.
-
In album order:
When Your Time Has Come
Brother, Can You Hear Me?
Begin Again
Hymn of a Thousand Voices
Astonishing
-
First I didn't get it, but after a few listens: hands down to 'Three Days' I think it's almost unreal.
For me that song is the 'Dance Of Eternity' of The Astonishing... :hefdaddy
-
Dystopian Overture - Incredible start to the album and one of their better instrumentals for sure.
The Gift of Music - Still love it. Very Concise track with so many great moments.
Lord Nafaryus -
Three Days - Most :metal moment on the album in the chorus (and the blastbeat swingjazz is equal parts baffling and awesome).
Ravenskill - Probably the best execution of telling the story through the music. That beginning is haunting (and makes me imagine the scene happening on a misty night rather than day as said in the booklet).
Probably would've put 'A Life Left Behind on there too.
Act One would probably be in my top 5 DT albums (but Act Two atm would be hovering around 10-13).
-
Our new woooorld...
CH-YEEEEEAAAAH
Also Three Days, Walking Shadow, X Aspect and A Tempting Offer.
-
95 voters, and I'm the only one that singled out Heaven's Cove?
-
Losing Faythe and Whispers On The Wind has fewer votes than the NOMAC tracks. Ouch.
-
A New Begining
A Saviour in the Square
Our New World
Act of Faythe
Raveskill.
-
After one listen, my favorite song is Act Of Faythe.
-
Losing Faythe and Whispers On The Wind has fewer votes than the NOMAC tracks. Ouch.
Not surprised. Those are smack dab in the middle of the chunk of "just kinda there" songs from the middle of Act 2, IMO.
My early votes are for:
The Answer
Act of Faythe
Three Days
Brother, Can You Hear Me?
A New Beginning
I am sure that will change the more I listen.
-
A New Beginning
The X Aspect
A Better Life
A Life Left Behind
My Last Farewell
-
Dystopian Overture
A Savior in the Square
When Your Time Has Come
A New Beginning
Moment of Betrayal
This is only after a few listens. WYTHC really stands out to me, the opening is a really nice transition from ASITS and the chorus really stands out. Good solo too. Getting kind of a Spirit Carries on type feel from it.
-
The songs that stood out to me most on first listen were A Life Left Behind, A New Beginning, and The Walking Shadow.
-
The "best" songs were the softer/slower ones. I'm so so tired of noodling, but that more emotive material was refreshing.
-
It completely boggles my mind how Our New World is the most popular song on the album. (Although I realise it's almost tied with 2 other songs)
Okay, it's catchy as fuck, that's for sure. But... It's also just, so.. generic. I wouldn't quite say boring.. yet. I've seen a few comments at the overuse of sus4 chords being a detriment to the album, then we have song thats main theme is literally a clusterfuck of sus4s and 2s going back and forward on the major. It appeals on first listen but I honestly think people will get bored of this song really quickly. There are far more interesting songs on the album IMO. I'm not saying it's bad to be clear, I actually think it's a highlight of the latter part of the album but... yeah... might be different for DT but is far from the most inspired thing they've done, so simply put - I don't get the hype. No disrespect to everyone who really enjoys it, just had to get that off my chest. :P

Well, according to the results of this poll, it isn't.

First of all, the voting doesn't even put is as the most popular song. Secondly, the song is excellent so I don't know what you're talking about, or what you're basing any of that on.
-
lol, you're right. Dunno how I missed that, Three Days is a clear winner (atm). But I'm still getting overrated feelings about Our New World. :-\
-

I like 'Our New World' just fine, but I certainly agree not as much as many others seem to. It actually sounds a little like a track they would play in a montage during a Baywatch episode to me. However, I was a huge Baywatch fan, so take that as you will... ;D
-
Don't get me wrong, I like it just fine too. ;) I was just trying to express my surprise at the attention this song is getting because it didn't overly impress me and is not a direction I would prefer for DT. In fact, as soon as I heard it, I was like YES this is the big song at the end! And maybe it fell a bit flat on that expectation because it didn't really go anywhere (for me). Then again, it's a fun catchy song, so good thing they don't listen to me right. :loser:
Take this with a grain of salt, but I remember thinking this sounds like Stone Temple Pilots or something. I don't even listen to STP so I don't know what they're supposed to sound like.. :P But I guess I haven't heard a DT song with a vibe like this since.. Cover My Eyes?
-
It reminds me of About To Crash.
I get that it's not a style that appeals to every type of fan, but I find the claim that those who like it are just going to get bored of it a bit arrogant. I love that style of song, and it's well written, and I very much expect it will be one of the keepers of the album for me for a long time to come.
-
Yeah, it's a bit arrogant to assume other people will get bored of it (an assumption I can only make when the song is new anyway), I was simply projecting from my own experience. I feel that may happen with song for me personally though. Also, I'm more interested in the implication that if people find this to be (one of) their favourite song(s), then they're choosing it over a lot of other material, that's what surprises me. Dunno why, because I find myself enjoying lots of songs that other people dislike and have even tricked myself into liking songs I previously didn't. :lol
But just not seeing it here is all.
-
That's fair enough if that's your experience. DT have covered so much ground that fans are going to like different sides of the band more or less than others.
Even though I think it's definitely one of the best songs on the album, I was a little surprised that in the other thread people seemed to single it out over the rest. But the more I've listened to it, the more I've grown to love it and the uplifting vibe. They haven't done anything like it in a long time.
-
Definitely, as it goes, the thing that excites me the most about it is that it's refreshing and a somewhat unexpected style for the band. I'm just wandering if it could be a novelty effect due to various expectations and experiences from some of the recent albums (for some) but, I dunno, that might be digging a bit too far pulling shit out of my arse though because as you say, fans will like different sides of the band.
-
I'd say, in order:
A New Beginning
Our New World
A Life Left Behind
The X Aspect
Hard to say after that, I'd need to listen to the album more.
-
Three Days
Ravenskill
A New Beginning
A Better Life
Heaven's Cove
In that order.
-
When I looked at the results on that graph sideways, it looked like a big equalizer. Maybe TA is just a big EQ. The epitome of a perfect balance of music..
-
For me so far, 3D and LN are the two standout tracks.... the other three I voted for are ANB, MoB & TPTD.
-
Results So far :
1. Three Days
2. A New Beginning
3. Our New World
After a while - we should collect the results and show the top 10 and maybe see how those tracks would run when sequenced that way :p
-
Results So far :
1. Three Days
2. A New Beginning
3. Our New World
These are some fine results.
-
Three Days reminds me of A Nightmare Before Christmas.
-
Heavy metal Danny Elfman. That's a nice combo. :metal
-
Heavy metal Danny Elfman. That's a nice combo. :metal
Scaretale by Nightwish is the epitome of that combo :metal
And add me to the ONW is overrated camp. Nice little song, but no where NEAR as good as the majority of Dream Theater's other music, IMO.
-
Very unfair to have only five choices. There's so much memorable songs on that record...but I'd say that Ravenskill is my favorite song by now.
-
Man this is difficult...
Three Days
A Life Left Behind
A Tempting Offer
A New Beginning
Hymn Of a Thousand Boices
-
Is there a way to change our votes? Not that it matters that much, but I'd like to switch on of my previous choice with The Path That Divides.
-
This is way too hard to vote on lol. So many awesome songs on this album.
-
A New Beginning. Dat outro.
-
My top 5 (in roughly that order right now, but it's constantly changing):
- A New Beginning
- Three Days
- My Last Farewell
- The Path That Divides
- Dystopian Overture
Runner-ups (in no particular order):
- Lord Nafaryus
- The Gift of Music
- Moment of Betrayal
- Act of Faythe
- A Saviour in the Square
- Ravenskill
- The X Aspect
- Heaven's Cove
Too many runner-ups, but I just couldn't exlude any of them... :-\
-
I regret answering this poll so early. My choices are entirely different now.
So much good material, dammit.
-
Shit, I don't know.
-
Very hard to pick, I went for A Better Life, When your Time Has Come, The Answer and the title track.
-
I agree with other posters that just picking 5 favourites is a real challenge as it changes all the time. For the record at the time I chose (in album order):
Dystopian Overture
A Better Life
Ravenskill
The X Aspect
A New Beginning
Other notable favourites (again in album order) I will add are:
The Gift Of Music
Lord Nafaryus
When Your Time Has Come
Three Days
Moment Of Betrayal
The Path That Divides
Hymn Of A Thousand Voices
Our New World
Astonishing
For me, I can split the album up equally into 17 truly outstanding or very good songs and 17 good to below average or fuller songs.
-
I voted here after one listen, and picking just 5 was difficult...
After my first listen, while I liked A New Beginning a lot I wouldn't necessarily have picked it above a few other songs, so I left it out of my top 5 here for one that I think had less mention of it (A Tempting Offer). However, after many listens it is definitely one of the top 2, so my top 5 would be:
Three Days
A New Beginning
The Gift Of Music
Moment Of Betrayal
The Path That Divides
The same as the 5 I voted here except for A New Beginning over A Tempting Offer.
-
I voted:
From Act 1:
- "When Your Time Has Come"
- "Three Days"
- "A New Beginning"
From Act 2:
- "Heaven's Cove"
- "Hymn Of A Thousand Voices"
For me, one of the great aspects of this album is the little references to other styles of music, such as tango in "Lord Nafaryus". The dixieland section in "Three Days" is really cool in the context of a prog-metal song, and James' melody in "Heaven's Cove" has some sort of 'religious', 'marching' overtones which remind of Katniss singing "The Hanging Tree" in Mockinjay Part 1.
(Also, to the mods: is it OK to post a YouTube link to a clip of a film scene, when it's obviously not uploaded 'officially'?)
-
Results So far :
1. Three Days
2. A New Beginning
3. Our New World
These are some fine results.
Still the top 3
-
1. Ravenskill
2. A Better Life
3. Chosen
4. Astonishing
5. A Life Left Behind
-
A Tempting Offer. Again.
