DREAM THEATER ANNOUNCE MOMENTOUS 2016 EUROPEAN TOUR
DEBUTING NEW ALBUM LIVE IN ITS ENTIRETY
DATES BEGIN FEBRUARY 18TH AT LONDON’S PALLADIUM
NEW ALBUM SET TO ARRIVE EARLY 2016
Roadrunner Records’ group Dream Theater has announced new tour dates for a momentous European headline run which is set to kickoff February 18th at the Palladium in London, England. The winter run will see the prog-titans delivering a one-of-a-kind set in which they will be debuting their forthcoming album live in its entirety. The unique tour is set to make stops at prestigious theaters around Europe including Amsterdam’s Carre Theater, Oslo’s Konserthus, Stockholm’s Cirkus, Paris’ Palais des Congres and Milan’s Teatro Degli Arcimboldi with additional dates to be announced (see attached itinerary). Presale tickets for select dates will be available on Wednesday, November 4th with general onsale for all dates beginning on Friday, November 6th. For up-to-the-minute news and ticket information, please visit https://www.dreamtheater.net/tour.
The European tour comes in anticipation of Dream Theater’s forthcoming album which is expected to arrive in early 2016. The new material will follow 2013’s worldwide smash album “DREAM THEATER,” which earned a second Grammy nomination for the band, topping Billboard’s “Hard Rock Albums” while simultaneously entering at #7 on the Billboard 200. The extraordinary chart position marked the group’s third consecutive top 10 debut, and also saw "DREAM THEATER" making top 5 chart debuts in Japan, Germany, Italy, Canada, Argentina, Switzerland, Holland, and Finland, as well as top 10 debuts in Denmark, Austria, and Norway, with career high debuts in the United Kingdom and Australia. Rolling Stone touted the legendary collection as “…the birth of a new era in the band’s career.”

Given that they will play the new album in its entirety.... :xbones :yarr :metal
99% sure it will be a looooong concept!
-
This is great news! I simply must get to the London show!
Any details on how to get into the Presale? Do we need to sign up somewheres?
-
New album is called: The Astonishing
-
Finally some news. :metal
-
I'm hoping for Croatia tour date. They were there with DT12 and show was well attended, it would be sin to skip us and make us wait another eternity again :P
I'm glad we got some news at last, surely more of them will come soon :metal
-
I imagine the pre-sale will be via the DT website like it was for the last tour.
-
I imagine the pre-sale will be via the DT website like it was for the last tour.
Yeah I'd say you're right. I'm just panicking. Perfectly normal behaviour :eek
I may start hitting F5 on the DT Tours page very soon ha!
-
Looking forward to this! I'm guessing this will be the only tour to see the album in its entirety and that if they do a 2nd leg there will be more back catalogue from them
-
I'm kinda sceptic about buying a ticket knowing that the only thing they'll play is an entire album I haven't heard a single note of, but I guess if they're playing it in its entirety right away they must be extremely excited about it themselves?
-
So the new album will be out around the same time i'm guessing.
-
So the new album will be out around the same time i'm guessing.
I hope a little bit sooner as the band is going to play the whole thing live and people need to get a chance to hear it before the shows.
-
That's even more solid evidence that this is some kind of concept album.
Would it possibly count as evidence against a double album? I can't imagine playing a double album live at every show, at the expense of much else. I know they played SFAM live as a whole, but that was a single album.
-
Concept > Double.
-
They play in theaters rather than venues for a one of a kind set? as I suggested earlier, I think more and more that this album may have an orchestra, and they will use it live.
JP said that "it took them longer and you'll see why"... when did they ever have to explain delays for the massive amount of music they've written? they wrote ToT in 3 weeks, they wrote 100 minutes of music for Six Degrees, every other album has a 20 minutes epic, when did they ever tell in the past "it took us longer to do it 'because we had to write a 24 minutes song with a lot of references thrown in"... also considering they said they did something never did before (at least for them), the orchestra could be the reason behind it.
-
The increase in production value is the reason for why it takes the band longer to produce albums. The orchestra could be a part of this, I hope it will at least.
I want to make it to the Stockholm show but honestly I doubt it I will have capacities to travel there...
-
Not sure how I feel about an entire album with an orchestra. I can just think of shit like Evanessence or that kind of European metal with strings on every song.
-

It can work if it's done well. DT12 tells me they couldn't do it well.
-
It doesn't say anything about using an orchestra does it though?
-

Welcome to DTF - Extrapolating something from nothing since 2007. :lol
-
I'm guessing that the album will be released a short time before the tour starts. 18th Feb is a Thursday, and as albums are released on Fridays now, I'll guess it's coming out on February 12th. Weekend of promo interviews, possibly in-store signings, then a few days to get ready for the first show.
-
Hmm, as others have touched on, I usually need time for music to grow on me. Not sure how keen I am going to a gig blind as it were. It could all sail right over my head.
Certainly not heading down to London for something I've not heard anything of - could you imagine spending all the cash and they play something like *insert least favourite DT album here*?? You would be mighty pissed off!
They can come to Scotland then I might consider it.
I'm pretty optimistic as usual.

-
Ok. Their marketing got me.
I'm officially excited.
-
1. It HAS to be a concept album, that's pretty obvious by now
2. They must be pretty damn confident in the new album
3. Tour announced so there's bound to be more solid news soon regarding release
-
Oh, this is getting good. :omg:
-
Tons of coordination and rehearsals required for something like this. Everyone involved on the whole DT team will have to bring
their A game every night. They must kill all the Gremlins before the tour
-
Sweet news. I can only hope the new album is loads better than DT12.
-
Oh, this is getting good. :omg:
Seriously! I need to get to London. :metal
-
Sweet, we have some actual news.
-
I think I wouldn't like an album with an orchestra either, and it would not even be an entirely new thing for DT. Score was a special event and the orchestra fit very well, but in the album I want to hear DT and only them...
They did not send anything by email, did they?
-

I didn't get anything via email, yet.
-
No email yet. I expect that when we actually get an email, it will coincide with a change of the official site, and possibly a single release, or some official announcement on the album title and artwork.
-
Nice to get news but. . . . United States ???
-
I ASSume they will play some older material at the end of the 2nd set but no clue how much. Sure would seem a logical guess that
it's a full on double album.

I'd say first set for the new album, second set for older material. Given the length of a DT show, that would probably work out quite nicely.

Probably right.

Great. Another European tour. While us Floridians, in the 3rd most populous state, have been waiting since 2011 for just 1 show.
-
very intimate concert as Carre at Amsterdam has a total of 1756 seats.
In for the ticketsale this friday the 6th.
-
Something tells me that tickets on sale at 9.00 am, sold out by 9.01 am...
-

Indeed. I'm lucky that I live 2-3 hours from L.A. so they always come here but it would be nice if they started in their home country.
Although to be honest it's the new music I'm more interested in.
-
I live 2-3 hours from L.A.
Huh, with your username, I assumed you were from NE. ;D
-
Having already bought tickets to see Avantasia in London in March and now this pops up :O , I am so torn right now....Can't afford to do both but REALLY can't miss this opportunity...WHYYYYY
-
I live 2-3 hours from L.A.
Huh, with your username, I assumed you were from NE. ;D
Nah, wide variety of favorite teams, just love Bill. Of course if I were from NE I could have gone to the BtFW show in Boston. I know it's a weird username for a music board but I just use the same one everywhere to make it easy to remember.
-
May sound petty but I hate it when American bands have they're first tour in Europe. :-\

The show was awesome. So is Bill!! ;D

Why are you calling music that many on this forum like, shit?
My only problem with Orchestra is that they've been there done that. If it works, great I wont complain at all, and with a concept album, it may even make more sense to have some orchestration.
-
May sound petty but I hate it when American bands have they're first tour in Europe. :-\
I'm with you especially as these seem to be small venues. If they were huge and American audiences couldn't fill them up that would be different. New Yorkers starting the tour in Europe
-
That's even more solid evidence that this is some kind of concept album.
Would it possibly count as evidence against a double album? I can't imagine playing a double album live at every show, at the expense of much else. I know they played SFAM live as a whole, but that was a single album.
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Double-album, played live in it's entirety at every show of that tour. 94 minutes and change. (SFAM is something like 77 or 78 minutes).

Never heard of it, but I'm talking specifically about in DT's case, not what another band has done.
-
2-Disc concept album. I'm calling it.

That's already been called by nearly everyone else.
-
Id be shocked if that wasnt the case
-
This is a new Dream Theater album. I'm calling it.
-
Ballsy to go out and play a new album in it's entirety, first time since 6 Degrees I think? must be very confident of the material!
-
Ballsy to go out and play a new album in it's entirety, first time since 6 Degrees I think? must be very confident of the material!
Well, Six Degrees was only the title track of that album... but I see what you mean. Anyway, on selected occasions they played also Train of Thought (first date ever of the tour in Manchester I believe) and Octavarium in their entirety from start to finish. But surely it wasn't something done each and every night.
-
Yeah I was at the Manchester gig, ToT start to finish 1st half of show then older tunes 2nd half. Just assumed at the time though this would be the standard show for the tour?
-
DT doing a Rock Opera...
Watch out, Ayreon! ;)
-

Watch out, Ayreon! ;)
Or Pink Floyd, or The Who, or Spock's Beard, or IQ, or Dream Theater.
Re. the structure of the show: If the album's a big one, like 2 hours, then that will probably take up two sets, then a few older songs as a third set, or just as encores.
-
Yeah I was at the Manchester gig, ToT start to finish 1st half of show then older tunes 2nd half. Just assumed at the time though this would be the standard show for the tour?
Probably it was MP's way to test out the new songs live and deciding which songs keep as regular in the set and which ones play on rare occasions.
-
Glad we finally have some news, altho it'll be even better when we get some real info about the album! Nonetheless, I'm very curious to see how this all develops. The impression I get is that the full show will be the new material, with an encore that has some older material - just a gut instinct tho.

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Double-album, played live in it's entirety at every show of that tour. 94 minutes and change. (SFAM is something like 77 or 78 minutes).
Floyd's The Wall was performed in it's entirety as well, and as is evident by the live version of the album (Is There Anybody Out There), was stretched out about 20 minutes more than the original 81 minute album.
And not that it really counts since it was 2 albums, but Queensryche did the 2006 tour where they did Operation: Mindcrime for the first set, O:M II for the second set (continuing the same story) and did an encore of older stuff.
Ballsy to go out and play a new album in it's entirety, first time since 6 Degrees I think? must be very confident of the material!
Not really. For World Tourbulence, they performed the title track for the second set of most Evening With shows, but not every other song from the album was also performed each night. The last tour where they regularly performed their current album in full was the Metropolis 2000 tour, altho there were some occasions where they did perform all the songs from Train of Thought at one show (only the first was in sequential order) and a handful of times they did all of Octavarium as a second set.
2-Disc concept album. I'm calling it.
That's already been called by nearly everyone else.
Yeah, but Chino didn't call it! That's the difference!
-
May sound petty but I hate it when American bands have they're first tour in Europe. :-\
Yea, I was thinking the same thing. Could it be they are more popular overseas and also the money must be fairly good. Or it could be the presitge of playing these older venues with the new material.
Anyhow, hoping that they start the US tour with the places that missed out on the last tour such as the entire southeast and Texas and I believe parts of the midwest.

Also commenting on the tour days, that two day-gap between Oslo and Stockholm would be perfect for a visit to Finland. Please?

There are few of us, ?, Roba and me are the most active ones :D
Let's do a DTF meeting in the next DT concert! Me and ? have been already in a few concerts together!
-
Europe is getting too much love recently :(
-
I'd like to attend the Stockholm show, although this is sooner than I expected them to come here, so we'll see.
-
Hmmm a Rock Opera? 2 hours and 40 minutes.... so we may have a double dics album with each album being 80 minutes?
-

That's the set length. So including a couple of extra songs, and the encore. I'm guessing more like 2 hours of new music. Maybe 2:15
-
Indeed, that's the length of the Evening With shows, 3 hours with a 15 minutes intermission.

10$ says the new album then encore Bridges in the Sky or Metropolis.

Length: 2hours 40 minutes with pause.
Double album confirmed.
-
No, that's just the usual length of an Evening With show.
-
Just checked the ticket prices for Stockholm....
At least double the price of a "normal" concert.
Payed 450 SEK for the Opeth 25th anniversary.
Normal price for The Astonishing is 895 SEK with some tickets going up to 1350 SEK.
Some with obstacles in view go for 590 SEK.
I will gladly pay 1350 if I have to... just found this curious
Something really special might be upon us....
-
Something really special might be upon us....
Whether or not the album is any good (and I have little doubt that it wont be good) there will certainly be something special about these shows IMO although I really hope this is just the beginning and they do the whole show in the US as well (which would then not make thsese dats very special, but the whole show may still be special and something worth the price of admission).
-
No, that's just the usual length of an Evening With show.
Yeah, but it's being advertised as a "rock opera" with "full visuals." Unless they have developed visuals to go along with their old material, I'd assume that most of that time covers the new album.
-

-
Gonna be there at the Palladium :metal
Album must be amazing if they are this confident in it. The hype is immense.
-
Sweet news. I can only hope the new album is loads better than DT12.
With you 100% on that buddy, it MUST be better than that career low release (for me) and I am absolutely SURE it will be. Having seen the "swedish" banner above, I am getting REALLY excited for this and I have high hopes it is going to be another career defining release.
-
The tour page talks about the presale tix going on sale on wednesday. So who has access to presale tickets? Is it through a specific company that handles it or do you need to be a fc member kind of like how maiden does it?
-
The new album sounds intriguing. I wish them well on their tour... and to all those that are fortunate enough to see them on the upcoming tour(s), I hope ya'll have a blast. Peace, love, happiness and Dream Theater.
-
No, that's just the usual length of an Evening With show.
That.
Having the usual "pause" / intermission would be evidence that the album is shorter than that. I still think it makes sense for a regular album played in one set, then a regular set for the other half of the show.
I don't know why people would want an ungodly long album anyway.
-

Indeed. I imagine it would be about 70 minutes for the album in the first set, then an intermission, then another 70 minute set of older songs, then a final 20 minute encore.
-

I'm not quite sure. As a reference, I know that I signed up with Foo Fighters' newsletter or something and I manage to get a presale code to get tickets of their shows (which initially generally sells fast).
Also, I know people would get presale codes through sites like Live Nation or maybe whatever promoter is running the show. I don't know how they get them though. Maybe due to them being frequent buyers of numerous shows or something?
-
each CD 60 minutes, 2 hours of new LP live + encore with ACOS

I'm wondering about the same thing.
-
Same ^
-
I don't know why people would want an ungodly long album anyway.
Length isn't everything (lol).
The more important thing is whether the length is warranted. The Dear Hunter's Color Spectrum is 9 EPs and is something like 2.5 hours, but the very nature of it and way it fits together means it never feels too long. Partly it's the amount of variety across it so that it's enjoyable in a single listen, but the structure also makes it easy to dip into one or a few EPs at a time, rather than all at once.
Anyway, that's just an example, but long =/= bad in the same way that long =/= good.
-

This, would be awesome. ACOS as the encore is long overdue.
-
I take 2 shows in Paris, so far \m/
-
Presales open via DT website NOW, virtually sold out already!
-
Yip they are gone ffs.
Oh well saves me the dilemma of whether or not to commit to 1,000 mile round trip at least.
-
I managed to get a hold of 2 tickets for the Oslo show. Not prime seating positions (parterre, row #25), but I just went for it. I just wanted two tickets. And now I don't have to fight for the remaining ones (even though there probably are a lot more tickets for sale on Friday) together with everyone else.
Color me relieved!
-
There will be better tickets available tomorrow at livenation.no and on friday at billettservice.no. You could just grab those and scalp the two you bought today ;)
-

Swedishgoose: where did you get tix? I ended up in row 2 läktare left.
-
Question for Mr BlobVanDam:
As we all know you have made a few videos for the last couple of tours. Seeing as seemingly there isn't going to be that long between album release and tour start, I was wondering whether you had been approached for this one yet?
-
An extra show in Oslo is set up, Saturday 27th. Sunday's show was quickly sold out this morning.
Still plenty of seats left Saturday!
-
I was wondering, what can I expect of a "special tour gift"? in the vip package. Not expecting something great or anything, just wondering what people usually get.
-
Last time it was a set of guitar picks - Nothing to get excited about.

Pretty hefty prices I must say, all ranging $70-156, those at $70 were pretty bad seats so the fairly good ones were at about $100. Thinking this will be one special event. Anyway got myself tickets for the Stockholm show at Cirkus, can't wait!

Yea man, gonna be awesome!

When the tour comes to the US it will be interesting if one: They play the same set or pick the best of the new material and play some older material that has not been played in a while and two: They play small venues like they are in Europe or play larger venues. Obviously they could play much larger places in Europe, but are playing these more intimate venues.
-
Milan has doubled! In Italy we get as well two consecutive shows, 19th March announced by the italian promoter on their website!

Have to say Cirkus is smaller than I thought so my seats dosen't seem so bad. If they get the sound right this have the potential to be the best sounding DT show i've been to given it's a small location and not an Arena.

And also on dt offical website. If no news about a show in Rome, gonna get a ticjet for that saturday night show in Milan, buy in advance discounted train ticket and... Probably sleep by my cousin! :tup
-
Anyway got myself tickets for the Stockholm show at Cirkus, can't wait!
Cool, see you there :)
Yea man, gonna be awesome!
Have to say Cirkus is smaller than I thought so my seats dosen't seem so bad. If they get the sound right this have the potential to be the best sounding DT show i've been to given it's a small location and not an Arena
I have seen Opeth, Black Country Communion and Meshuggah there and the sound has been amazing for all bands. I love place as it's really beautiful and yet has great sound.

Will be my first concert at Cirkus.... soo looking forward to it.

Theaters usually have better acoustics than the more regular concert venues and are often built to have good sound for every seat. But that also has to do with the engineers and what they are trying to achieve, offcourse. In my experience, theater shows are usually less loud and more clear/balanced intrumentally.
I have only seen one (prog)metal show in the theaters, which was the Human Equation show of Ayreon. That one sounded fantastic. However, the try out of that show also showed to me that even in a regular venue the sound can be fantastic if they want to. This really made me wonder where the hell most prog/power/symphonic metal bands get their sound engineers, actually.
Still, I do expect superiour sound than the previous DT concerts I attended (which were not bad, but too loud and with some musical elements drowned in the mix). There is no way DT is going to do a theater tour and not adjusting their sound to cater to that.

Which, in my opinion, is precisely what DT needs.

..and Sweden only has one

The only reason sweden only has one as of yet is because you've not managed to sell the place out. Word from the band is that you shouldn't expect all territories that they usually reach on a european tour to be visited this time around, because they're focusing on theatres/symphony halls and multi night performances.
-
Tbh I didn't even expect a show in Finland, because I can't think of a suitable concert hall or theater in Helsinki where DT could play. Finlandia-talo and Musiikkitalo don't seem to be ideal places for a metal concert, and they've already played at the House of Culture before. Of course they could perform at Tampere-talo so I wouldn't have to travel, but that's never gonna happen. :P
Hopefully the album will suck so I won't regret missing the tour :neverusethis:

Tickets for both nights in Amsterdam are in :-)

Hmm, where did all the german dates go?
Yeah, I honestly wonder about that too, because I was actually planning to buy tickets for the show in Bochum, but why are they gone?
Are they waiting for some kind of better reason to announce them? I just really hope it does not mean they`re cancelled.
-
Read on DT's Facebook that London is the only UK town they will visit this tour.
I know some were hoping for other towns but alas... get your tickets to London while they exist.
I would not want to miss this once in a lifetime chance for a very special DT concert...

Musiikkitalo could be so cool if they had perform there. It's 360 degree view to stage. But yeah, I thought the same. House of Culture isn't really nice place after all and the sound is quite muddy. Tampere-talo or Sibelius-talo in Lahti (which has the world's 2nd or 3rd best acustics) could be great but never gonna happen.

I missed the last time they played a show in Finland, so i'm really hoping they stop here in the next tour. Especially if this new album turns out to be a concept double album!
Tampere-talo is possibly the best concert venue in Finland, but as you said, chances of that happening are very slim. But if they somehow would manage to book a show in Tampere-talo i'd pay pretty much anything to see them there. Plus Tampere-talo is about 1,5 KM from where i live, so that would be a added bonus!

A third concert in Oslo has been confirmed. February 26th.
"Etterspørselen etter billetter til Dream Theater-konsertene i Oslo Konserthus vil ingen enda ta, og det er nå bekreftet at bandet vil holde enda en ekstrakonsert i Oslo Konserthus fredag 26. februar.
Billetter i salg: torsdag 19. november, kl 09:00.

Hmm, where did all the german dates go?
Hello There!
I'm not quite sure, but I think, they have to rearrange the Dates in Germany.
The Concert in Hamburg for example is impossible because there is a Concert with Nigel Kennedy on the particular Date in the Venue.
-
They just added 8th of March in Copenhagen.
That's it for the moment...
-
german dates are on again...
-

Yey! Have booked the second night at Cirkus! Hope to see y'all there! Having hope for a great concert, stage and sound! Thinking of booking the first night too :).
-
They added also 2nd show in Denmark.
-
Aw man, I'm so torn. I've never been to a DT concert and would love to see them - and they are playing in March some place nearby! But the tickets are 50€+ (which is fairly expensive to me right now) and I'm not sure if I want to spent that money on a concert where they are going to play an album I don't know yet. Tough choices.
-
^
Who is to say you'll get another chance to see them? If you do, maybe you will not be entirely thrilled with half of that setlist.
You might not be thrilled with half of 'The Astonishing'. But you'll always have the memories of the half that blew you away.
Risk/reward....go with the 'reward'.
