What does everything think the best metal guitar solo or solos of all time are?
I know it's a question that can't properly be answered and is totally subjective, but the other day when I was listening to Priest's Painkiller in the car, I was listening to Glen's razor sharp leads blasting through my right speaker and I thought to myself, "you know what, this could be the greatest heavy metal guitar solo of all time." The precision, skill, execution and phrasing is just perfect. Not sure it's the best, I just thought that at the time, but Tipton would surely have many solos in the best of all time category, he's incredible.
Also would love to get some different songs as being a guitarist myself, seeing if there's some I've missed out on that I need to hear.
-
It's an impossible question to answer given how much a whole genre covers, and what you value in a solo.
But Bark at the Moon was the first to come to mind, so I'll throw that one out there. But then you can't mention Ozzy without mentioning Rhoads, so then Over the Mountain comes to mind.
Not sure they'd be the absolute best metal solos of all time, but if you were making a top list, they'd have to be on there somewhere, right? :metal
-
I know the title is too harsh but that's what I'm looking for, things that spring to mind that have always impressed. The idea can span over many genres really, melodic rock, AOR, prog etc.
Bark at the Moon is so classic and a well crafted solo. Jake's runs are tricky to master and build a great climax.
Speaking of Randy, my fav from him might actually be Revelation. OTM is certainly one of his greatest though, but Revelation was always IMO a well put together solo.

It's so hard to choose just one for Randy, because all of his solos were so thoughtful and composed. Revelation is a great one, but I think all of the solos in Mr Crowley would be my choice from Blizzard. There are multiple solos, and each one is just as memorable and iconic.
Flying High Again is another strong contender, I could just go on.
-
The live version of Revelation (off Tribute) was one of my all time favourite things to play ,as was BATM. But yeah - tough to learn.
Another few that come to mind are Gutter Ballet , Tornado of Souls, Practice What You Preach/Electric Crown , Altitudes , Under A Glass Moon and Cemetery Gates. The midsection of Still of the Night (incl riffs) would be up there. I could go on and on with this topic :lol
Eruption perhaps? :)
-
The solo in Muse's Big Freeze is my favorite guitar solo ever. That's not really metal though.
The one in Destrage's Neverending Mary is the first metal one that comes to my mind. I'll think on this for a little while and see if I come up with anything else.
-
One of my all time favorite and most memorable solos (even though it's pretty short) is Adrian Smith's solo in Aces High.
KK and Glen both do a pretty amazing job on The Sentinel.
EDIT: And I don't mean to pander...but honestly... the most amazing and memorable solo I've ever heard is STILL JP's solo from Under a Glass Moon
-

A fairly obscure one that always really impressed me. Danny Stag from the short-lived Zeppelin-clone Kingdom Come. They had a couple of hits from their debut album in the late 80's, and then disappeared.
This solo from their ballad What Love Can Be is one of those solos that stuck with me years later as being absolutely brilliant. I included it with the time stamp...
https://youtu.be/NijdmExv9pU?t=3m10s
-
I also want to add Paul Gilbert's solo from the end of "The Door" on Neal Morse's Sola Scriptura to the mix
-
I always liked the solo in Beyond the Realms of Death
-
I was doing some digging to see if I could remember some others.
Man...I forgot how much fun it was to listen to Vito Bratta from White Lion. Just pick one. Hungry is really good, but even Wait is just a really great solo.

Little Fighter is my favourite of his. I wasn't thinking of him as "metal" but yeah - great guitarist.
-
Well....it was "hair metal"...but it was still a sub-genre of metal.
It still cracks me up that everything that was considered "metal" in the 70's was not "metal" in the 80's, and then when we got to the 90's, the 80's stuff wasn't "metal" any more...and so on and on.
By today's definitions, you would think that a record store in 1979 would stock their "heavy metal" section with only Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. :lol

Megadeth's My Last Words

I like to think that I'm not quite that thick. I've just never used the term "hair metal"- to me it's always been hard rock . I have also always referred to 70's era Van Halen, Deep Purple etc....as metal as I feel it had the metal attitude/heaviness for the time. Mid -late 80's I would call some of the same bands' material "hard rock". But stuff like Bon Jovi/White Lion etc....(both of which I love) just doesn't register with me as metal at all - early Def Leppard would though.
I'm well aware that everyone has their own definitions of metal and that's cool. I don't consider anyone "correct" when it comes to this and I merely stated that I don't think of White Lion as metal. I certainly don't think you or anyone else is wrong and I'm normally careful not to wade into discussions on genre definitions for that reason. Oops.
-
Honestly...it's all cool. I wasn't so much complaining as I was LQTM....and then typing out loud.
-
The idea can span over many genres really, melodic rock, AOR, prog etc.
alex lifeson - la villa strangiato
This solo is all about the build up. Starts relatively simple and emotive, then builds up in difficulty until it's basically shredding, then suddenly calms back down... All of this while remaining in 7/8
-
My favourite solo of all time is Devin's solo on Deep Peace. Perfect build-up, start to finish and amazing melodies.
-
Criss Oliva's solo in Gutter Ballet was the reason I started playing guitar. It will likely always be the first one to come to mind for me whenever someone mentions 'great solos'. It might not be the 'best', but for me it is.
-

Very cool to see his legacy being appreciated across the generations :tup
-
Propably something by Guthrie Govan, canīt come up with any names right now.
I really like Under a Glass Moon but Day of The Dead by Holdsworth with Sherinian is propaby the most interesting.
Iīm a River by Uli Roth isnīt metal but possibly my favorite rock solo. The best tone I have ever heard.
-

Always nice to see Criss Oliva mentioned
-
The best metal guitar solo that I have heard is Criss Oliva's All That I Bleed guitar solo (including the outro). It's not complicated but it is so full of emotion, it is a song in itself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjDl3lcAf8g
Queen does not really qualify as metal, but Brian May's solos in Tie Your Mother Down, Seven Seas of Rhye, Save Me, Somebody to Love, Bohemian Rhapsody, The March of the Black Queen, and Innuendo are just heavenly.
-
EDIT: And I don't mean to pander...but honestly... the most amazing and memorable solo I've ever heard is STILL JP's solo from Under a Glass Moon
it's always the first thing that comes to my mind when this question comes around
I will never understand the love for that solo. :( I think it's *technically* good but that's it ( for me ).
Lines In The Sand, As I Am, Razor's Edge, The Best Of Times are all better IMO.
-
My favourite solo of all time is Devin's solo on Deep Peace. Perfect build-up, start to finish and amazing melodies.
Completely agreed. That's definitely one of my favourites.

Those are great as well. My two favourite JP solos are probably Razor's Edge and The Best of Times.
-
Goodnight Kiss, Hell's Kitchen also.
-
Criss Oliva was also one of my idols learning the guitar. I think my style really leans on what he did on those Savatage albums, he was just so expressive and had great phrasing and feel. There's a lot of his that are great but favs are;
He Carves His Stone (epic ending)
Ghost in the Ruins
Miles Away
Follow Me
Actually, the whole Edge of Thorns album is a perfect example of brilliant lead playing and every guitarist should hear it.
The live version of Revelation (off Tribute) was one of my all time favourite things to play ,as was BATM. But yeah - tough to learn.

Everything here is worthy. Love the Practice What You Preach mention, definitely a great solo from Alex.
I always liked the solo in Beyond the Realms of Death
That's definitely a fav of all time for me too.
-
Michael Schenker from the Strangers version of Rock Bottom.
-
Bark at the Moon is so classic and a well crafted solo. Jake's runs are tricky to master and build a great climax.
You're telling me. My band has done this song for a while now and it's TOUGH. It's even tougher when your drummer has a tendency to play too fast. :lol
Another great one is Electric Eye.
-
Tornado of Souls immediately springs to mind. Phrasing on that is excellent, especially considering its thrash metal.
Floods by Pantera is pretty memorable.
-
Tornado of Souls (Marty Friedman)
No More Tears (Zakk Wylde)
These are my two favorites, without thinking too hard.
-
twins xx
-
I'll give this some thought but one that leaps to mind is the solo from Dokken's In My Dreams. Went through a hair metal phase a bit ago and that one really stood out.
-
Selkies.
You should all feel bad for not mentioning it yet.
-
Tornado of Souls. Simply magnificent.

Some of the earlier live versions of this song are amazing!
-
Richie Blackmore- Highway Star
-
Michael Schenker from the Strangers version of Rock Bottom Lights Out.
Honestly, though, I'd probably go with Buck Dharma and the ETL version of Veteran of the Psychic Wars.
-
Some really great ones mentioned already. It's hard to try to pick one especially when I own so many albums but Rainbow In The Dark is
the first one that popped into my mind.
-
Tesla - Comin Atcha Live
Iron Maiden - 2 minutes to midnight, Powerslave
Paul Gilbert - Technical Difficulties, The Curse of Castle Dragon
These came to mind, but tbh I prefer many JP solos to any of these. Here's WatchMojo's take on the subject, pretty good video (Fatal Tragedy gets an honorable mention): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvG51Qymr9w

A positively ripping solo. Good choice.

I also want to add Paul Gilbert's solo from the end of "The Door" on Neal Morse's Sola Scriptura to the mix
I came into the thread to post that. Favorite solo of all time. Prior to hearing that one, Skolnick's solo on Return To Serenity was my favorite. Beginning at 3:16 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bry_6P_1co4 (sorry, I don't know how to make a YouTube video start at a particular timestamp)

And yeah, that's an awesome solo. Good call.

Michael Schenker from the Strangers version of Rock Bottom Lights Out.
Honestly, though, I'd probably go with Buck Dharma and the ETL version of Veteran of the Psychic Wars.
I almost posted Rock Bottom, Love To Love, and Lights Out. Hell, that whole album is a clinic. Also the deeper tracks from the UFO Schenker era are outstanding, No Heavy Petting in particular.
-
As far as traditional heavy metal goes, first ones that came to mind are:
Black Sabbath - War Pigs
Iron Maiden - Phantom of the Opera (the Live After Death version is even better than the already amazing studio version as well)
-
Yngwie' Kree Nakoorie solo. Although I'd been into metal for a while, the solos on the Alkatrazz album was the first time where I stood up and thought wtf have I just heard?
-

Don't laugh at me, but Yngwie's solo on Jet To Jet still gives me goosebumps.

:lol

Forgot about the metal thing :lol . I guess Destrage's Are You Kidding Me? No. would be up there. It just evolves, and as it goes through so many styles, it ends up with something really different.
-
There are several for me:
Working Man - Alex
Mr. Crowley - Rhoads
Eruption - EVH
Painkiller - Tipton /Downing
Stargazer - Blackmore
War Pigs - Iommi
No More Tears -Wylde
And while not Metal by my definition, I have to toss JP's solo on Lines In The Sand into the mix.

Not trying to side-track the thread, but did you see That Metal Show that was on recently with Michael? They were ranking Shenker era UFO songs/solos and completely ignored the reunion era material. Some of that stuff is on par with the 70's stuff, and they didn't even give it a passing mention. Shameful...

Yes, Jet to Jet is amazing. That whole album is filled with just great solos. Yngwie had plenty in the early days.
One of favs from him actually is a little number from Magnum Opus called The Only One, great AOR style song.

The whole steeler album is filled with solos that is far beyond what you think a 100 percent selftaught 19 year old can play.
He hardly developed like everyone thought he would do though. Maybe some formal training would be a good idea for Yngwie. ;D
-
And maybe some therapy would be worth booking in advance for whoever tries to teach him .

Satriani could possibly handle him at the time, he taught a couple of guitarists that were propably just as hard to handle. ;D
-
When you said "would be a good idea" I thought you meant these days and so I was talking about someone trying to teach the great man now - copious quantities of fookin fury would be unleashed on the poor teacher.
And Satriani gets points off for showing Kirk Hammett what a wah pedal is ;D
-
Satch :  This is a Wah Pedal, Kirk.
Kirk : :hat neato !
Satch :  but don't use it ALL the time ?

-
A newer one tha comes to mind...Behind the Veil...DT
When All is Lost..Symphony X
Freewill..Rush
Paschendale.. Iron Maiden
Rock you like a Hurricane.. Scorps
Return to Serenity.. Testemant
Even though it's not metal, I have to vive an honorable mention to "Gonna Hitch a Ride"...Boston.
-
Yeah, BTV is an amazing one from JP. The SX is a good one too.
If you're a Romeo fan, you need to check out the solo on Ayreon's Dawn of A Million Souls.

Not sure if I can pick just one, but here's a few off the top of my head:
Savatage: Gutter Ballet, Edge of Thorns, The Wake of Magellan
Trans-Siberian Orchestra: The Dark
Dream Theater: Voices, Scarred (Awake was a really good album for John Petrucci!)
Symphony X: Through the Looking Glass (part III)
Ozzy: No More Tears
Crimson Glory: Burning Bridges
Balance of Power: House of Cain
Blue Oyster Cult: The Siege and Investiture of Baron Von Frankenstein's Castle at Weisseria
Gamma Ray: Rebellion in Dreamland
Queensryche: Eyes of a Stranger, NM 156
Scorpions: Still Loving You
Star One: Star Child
WASP: The Headless Children
Cirith Ungol: Chaos Rising
-
Some good ones there too. Love the Scarred mention, one of my FP favs too.
Good call on the WASP too.

Lots of good ones in earlier Ryche. Take Hold, Propechy, Nightrider etc.
-
The solo in Bat Country is also tip top as well.
-
Some of my all time favorite solos probably wouldn't fall under the "metal" category, but I'll stick with the genre..
1. George Lynch - Heaven Sent, In My Dreams, Into the Fire
2. Criss Oliva - Edge of Thorns, All That I Bleed
3. Yngwie - I'd Die Without You
4. Tom Englund and Henrik Danhage - King of Errors
5. Nuno Bettencourt - too many to mention
6. Warren Demartini and Robbin Crosby - Wanted Man
-
I've always loved Petrucci's solo in Hollow Years @ Budokan, even though that's not a metal song. Another favourite of mine is actually a solo from our guitarist (out of this world), here's a link: https://youtu.be/KSV9aRr9qNc?t=5m37s

Another Yngwie one from Magnum Opus. That's actually quite an underrated one from him IMO. Cross the Line is stellar too.
Speaking of Evergrey, they have loads of brilliant ones. My fav is probably Tom's A Touch of Blessing solo. I remember when I got the album I use to just repeat that solo, it's incredible.
-
Judas Priest - One Shot at Glory
-
Lil Wayne's guitar solo is a standout for me
-
Judas Priest - One Shot at Glory
Possibly Priest's most underrated solos, and top 5 KK solo anyway. Some of the trickest stuff they have come up with too.

That harmonized solo is amazing. It gives me chills every time I hear it.

Yeah dude I thoroughly enjoyed it. :tup
Anyway to get on topic my favorite guitar, while not metal, would probably be Steve Hackett's solo in the live recording of The Lamia. Blows me away every time.
-
^nice pick!
-
Love the solo(s) on Aces High by Maiden.
That said, even though I love metal, I don't find metal guitar solos anywhere near as interesting as those made by practitioners of 70s hard rock and prog, i.e. Jimmy Page , David Gilmour ,Jerry Garcia, Steve Howe\Hackett, Alex Lifeson, Rossington-Collins, Martin Barre, etc

Although I'm a metalhead, I can see what you're saying. Most of those guys have really creative and memorable solos.
-
Two of my faves that haven't been mentioned:
Dancing Mad -The Black Mages
It's a slow burner of a track and has some different styles. Is a bit EL&P in places but the build up makes the solo even better, it's just beautiful and I often air guitar alone in my room to it, actually I air guitar to it whilst walking down the road and get funny looks 😈
In the Fire - Roadrunner United Album.
This track is from the roadrunner united album that roadrunner records put out to celebrate their 25th (I think) anniversary. The album featured a crazy list of past and present musicians signed to roadrunner. This particular track features King Diamond :metal on vocals but the solo us by Corey Beaulieu from Trivium and is just a perfect metal solo (in my opinion) been listening to this song for 10 years and still love it.
-
Here's a link for The Black Mages song Dancing Mad, this is just the solo, the song is about 12 minutes long but here is the solo, I can't imagine that anybody would dislike this, especially on this forum, it's very John Petrucci :metal
https://m.youtube.com/watch?sns=fb&v=4b60gSFB2Nw
I urge you all to give it a quick listen
-
Classic era JRPG music is basically 70's prog rock, I'm sure a lot of the posters here would love the soundtracks to Chrono Trigger and FF6.

This is indeed a good solid metal solo, even if it is pretty generic. Great song and a definite standout on that album. Although, Matt does parts of the solo also. Goes Matt-Coery-Matt-Corey to end.
Also, come to think of it, Jeff Waters solo on The Dagger I think it is, is friggin awesome too from that same album.
-
Jeff Waters is massively under rated. If he had as much talent re keeping a decent band together as he does natural talent as a guitarist maybe things would be different.

Very underrated. I always wanted to see him in a decent heavy metal band. When I mean decent, Annihilator is good but I think his skills would be much better off in a more prog/melodic/classic style band as opposed to the thrash thing.
As you say though, if Annihilator could stay consistent, the band might be much more enjoyable and accessible.

Heh, I was just listening to the Black Mages recently and that solo made me think of this thread. Truly epic. Definitely one of the highlights from their albums. I once cried my eyes out to that solo (although at the time, I was tripping balls and had just had a bad breakup, so it may not have been just the solo :P ). But still, really fucking amazing solo.
As far as video game metal goes, the Dracula Battle Perfect Selections have some really bad-ass solos as well, especially Iron Blue Intention and Dance of Illusions. I would love to play some Castlevania with those tracks as the BGM. :metal :metal :metal
-
Adrian Smith.
I've never been wild about metal guitar solos taken as a whole. A lot of them don't really stick in my head. They can be good solos, but they won't necessarily stick with me, especially if they're fast and shreddy. Granted, there are exceptions. Marty Friedman occasionally turned out an excellent solo, as did, actually Kirk Hammett. Yeah, he gets lazy, but the One solo is pretty fantastic. Tony Iommi, obviously, played some quality guitar solos as well.
Obviously, if we're counting DT in here, Under A Glass Moon has a stellar solo, as do many other DT songs such as Breaking All Illusions. Including DT, my favorite metal solos would probably mostly be Petrucci, starting with UAGM, BAI and the solo after the F# in LTL.
But leaving DT and prog aside for the more straightfowardly-heavy metal artists, there really are only a handful of soloists who do it for me. I love the Iron Maiden guys for sure, and all three would rank among my favorite metal guitarists (sorry Dennis Stratton), especially Adrian Smith and Dave Murray (sorry Janick). I would name Janick's rendition of the Hallowed Be Thy Name solo (at its best) as one of his best solos, and for Dave Murray I would name Sign of the Cross as my favorite of his solos.
Adrian Smith, of course, is indisputably (/hyperbole) the best Iron Maiden guitarist and also the best guitarist in metal. Adrian Smith plays many excellent solos, but Stranger In a Strange Land is probably Adrian Smith's best solo. His two Seventh Son of a Seventh Son solos are also noteworthy, as, naturally, are many many other Adrian Smith solos.

Certainly not the greatest, but one of my favorite guitar solos is found in Avenged Sevenfold's "Strength Of The World" from about 5:15 to 7:30.

Well said 425, Adrian is incredible. Some of my favourite solos from him are actually some of the ones he did with Bruce;
Gates of Urizen
Man of Sorrows
Jerusalem
Amazing.

Here's a link for The Black Mages song Dancing Mad, this is just the solo, the song is about 12 minutes long but here is the solo, I can't imagine that anybody would dislike this, especially on this forum, it's very John Petrucci :metal

God I hope The Black Mages reform one day, I would give anything to see them live

I can't really find one solo that's better than better or greater than anything else. I however have a soft spot for solos that intertwine with a song in some way, like this cool duo by Arjen Lucassen and Erik Norlander:

So many cool things going on. While staying on topic one has to mention Michael Romeos brilliant solo in Dawn of a Million Souls on the same album.

I'll add one that hasn't been listed:

Already taken care of. Amazing solo.
Yeah, BTV is an amazing one from JP. The SX is a good one too.
If you're a Romeo fan, you need to check out the solo on Ayreon's Dawn of A Million Souls.

Awesome! :tup I remember Arjen mentioning how floored he was by Michaels solo when he first heard it.
