I am working on a project of compiling "important dates in DT history," whether they are things like DT Day in Utah, past and present band member birthdays, particularly important or significant shows, or any other cool or obscure thing you can think of. Whatever you've got, post it!
Well, since it's that month, how about November 17th, 1984. The day Mike Portnoy's mother passed away, which of course, ended up inspiring the lyrics for one of their most revered epics.
inb4 XB0BX............
Systematic Chaos was released on June 4 2007 ;D
March 4th, 1993 (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/dream-theater/1993/the-limelight-new-york-ny-6bd6ce3a.html), the show that was bootlegged to death, then later on released through YtseJamRecords, containing the original version of "A Change Of Seasons", every song from Images And Words, "To Live Forever" and "Eve", as well as three of the best songs from their debut album. A very historic show and one of the best recorded shows out there.

As well as August 29, 2006, which was the release date for it.
Damn. It took them 5 months to mix, edit and release it. There's really no excuse for LALP.
Keep it coming, guys! Good stuff.
Umm... I believe SDOIT was released on January 29, 2002... Let me check... YESS! I was right!
May 18, 1998 was their concert in Los Angeles where they featured a guest appearance by Bruce Dickinson doing Perfect Strangers, as well as a couple of Maiden tunes. And... Ray Alder from Fates Warning appeared on one of the songs as well that night, I think.

True. The important part being that I attended the concert. That's why they made a DVD of it too. Just like BTFW.
"JP: Holy shit, did you see rumby in the audience?
JR: Dang, yeah. Almost screwed up my cue out of excitement. Were the cameras rolling?"
True story.

I may be wrong, but I do believe it was the 16th.
Also, August 29th, 1992 is when Pull Me Under was released as a single. That's probably important.

You're right, it's the 16th. My bad.
September 9, 1994 - JR's first show with DT in Burbank, CA (although not as a full-time member)
August 8, 2010 - MP's last show with DT at Summer Sonic, Tokyo
July 4, 2011 - MM's first show with DT at Rock in Roma
Breaking The Fourth Wall was performed/recorded on March 25th, 2014. Released on September 29 in the UK, 30th in the US.
Umm... March 20, 2014 was the first day of their North American leg for the Along For The Ride Tour. I don't know just how significant/insignificant these dates have to be, lol.
Album release dates would be a good thing. And the dates when concerts released as live albums/DVDs were recorded.
January 31, 1995 - DT Uncovered show at Ronnie Scott's, which provided material for the ACOS EP.
April 29, 2011 - The day Mike Mangini was announced as the new DT drummer.
March 6, 2004 - the "When Dream And Day Reunite" show in L.A.
Would the fact that "Live Scenes" was released on 9/11/01, and that they had to recall it and change the cover art because of the terrorist attacks be a good example of what you're looking for?
So far, pretty much everything that has been posted is a good example of what I am looking for.
September 8, 2010. The day that Mike Portnoy announced that he is quitting DT. I might be off by a few days though. I'm going by with what wiki says.
9/11/2001
- Banned cover
(https://www.thegauntlet.com/photo/dreamtheaterlivescenesfiv3.jpg)
Not really one for the list, but significant for me personally:
September 12, 2009 - Day I bought my first DT albums (Octavarium and SFAM)
April 20, 2000 - MP's sobriety date.
Umm... 6:00 AM, December 25, 2013, the release date of the Happy Holidays compilation? ;D

Might be a bit obscure but that was also the day in the studio that they were planning on mixing a song called Conflict at Ground Zero which they tactfully decided to change the name to The Great Debate.
In 95 the band did the sessions for BBC radio broadcast where they played live studio versions of a whole bunch of Awake songs (including, Caught in a Web, Lifting Shadows, 6:00 plus Perfect Strangers live with Bruce Dickinson which predates the LA show with Bruce 3 years later).
There are 2 dates associated with this event as the performances were recorded January 30, 1995 but not broadcast until about a week later on February 7, 1995.

I don't believe they said they were planning to work on that specific song on that day, though that was the original title.
But that was the first day that James was supposed to go to start recording vocals for the album.

Yes, those are both typos. Fixed now.
Anyone know the exact day JR joined DT? If so, feel free to add:
______, 1999 - Jordan Rudess joins Dream Theater
Also, can't forget this one:
Some random day in 2000: I bought SFaM
September 13, 2006 - The day I joined DT.net.
June 4, 2009 - David Prater sneaks onto DTF pretending to be someone else as he tries to defend his name against criticism. :lol
March 6, 2004. WDADU 15th anniversary show at Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. Charlie and Derek return to the stage and perform with DT. A milestone in their career, a welcome surprise performance to give their first album the sonic quality that it deserves, and quite an event to catch live.
April 18th, 1963- Mike Mangini is born.
September 11, 2001 - Live Scenes was released and recalled because the original artwork depicted a burning NY skyline.

Set List:
Laura Palmer's Theme (intro tape)
1. Metropolis part 1 (w/ excerpt of Mean Street (Van Halen))
2. Overture 1928
3. Strange Deja Vu (w/ excerpt of Hot for Teacher (Van Halen))
4. Fatal Tragedy (Ass and Balls version)
5. The Mirror/The Mirror (reprise) (w/ excerpts of Moby Dick (Led Zeppelin) and Wipe Out)
6. The Canadian Rap
7. War Pigs (Black Sabbath) (w/ audience member on vocals)
8. Another Day (w/ extended keyboard solo at the end)
9. guitar solo (w/ Loch Lomond (Scottish bagpipe piece))/
10. Gladiator Theme
11. Home
12. keyboard solo (w/ excerpt of The Dance of Eternity)
13. Erotomania (w/ extended drum fills)
14. Voices
15. The Spirit Carries On
16. Learning To Live (w/ extended keyboard solo and excerpt of Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin) on the last chord)
~~~encore~~~
A Change of Seasons:
17. I The Crimson Sunrise
18. II Innocence
19. III Carpe Diem
20. IV The Darkest of Winters (w/ new solos)
21. V Another World
22. VI The Inevitable Summer (w/ extended guitar solo)
23. VII The Crimson Sunset
All of those covers were kind of out of the blue, and they were apparently just exhausted and strung out. They pulled some fucker out of the audience to sing on an impromptu cover of War Pigs, and of course, the Canadian Rap. This is hands down one of my favorite bootlegs. Just insane. And JLB comments on it at various times throughout.
I would argue that if someone values interview and documentary footage over performance footage, then it very well may be.
You make a good point, CiM actually really excels in that department which come to think of it, reminds me of the reason why I used to like it in the first place, before I came here and started getting infected by other's preconceptions of it. :lol
Wouldn't it be September of '85?
I agree that it hard to pinpoint the date for this one which is why I was asking the question. Is it a solid "dates in DT history" or is it more "dates and some events?" I don't know the details of Bosk's project so I wasn't sure if I could mention something that didn't have a specific date.
Bosk - You know you'll have to share more details eventually, right? :)
Yes, sorry, 85, and it could be October, for all we know.
But considering that MP has never even acknowledged the actual date of when the band was formed apart from the year, I'm sure even he's not sure when the right exact date would be.
It would be interesting to see if anyone else could come up with more examples like the one that I posted:
Situations involving WORLD EVENTS, not JUST the history of the band ITSELF!
Weren't they in Kobe when the earthquake hit in '95?
Well, that.
I don't know the exact dates, and I'm too lazy to go and look them up :biggrin:
The "important dates in DT history" thread
Just in case you didn't get the point, what I MEANT was: a situation in which the BAND was involved in a major-or at least minor-HISTORICAL event, such as the earthquake in Japan in 1995, or the one I already posted about!!!
Oh, OK.
This thread really made me take notice, looking over Lifting Shadows, just how much the importants of dates seems to deteriorate as the book goes on. At the beginning, every little date is made note of, the day they went into the studio, the dates the albums were released, the dates when certain events (i.e. James's throat accident) happen. By the time it gets to SFAM, no hard date about when they got into the studio is told, and by the time ToT comes around, it doesn't bother to state when the album came out at all. :-\
Sounds like every college paper I wrote.
Next decisive date in DT's history : the choice of a producer, other than JP. :biggrin: :rollin :corn
I wonder if JP going to Musicman back in 1999 could be considered.
Would have used the Baritone models otherwise? Did being with Musicman help to bring about the downtuning that we'd hear in DT songs from Train of Thought and onward?
JP: "For this album, we wanted to get an outside producer to give this album a unique sound that DT has never had before. So we decided it was time to rekindle things with Mike Portnoy. We brought him on board to co-produce the album with me."
