You know the old joke about how if you play a country music album backwards, you get your woman back and you get your house back and you get your truck back, etc. Well, it got me to thinking - what happens if you played Dream Theater backwards?
-
If you play Dream Theater backwards it becomes a 4, 4 time signature! Its pure evil! :metal
-
You get story about not being trapped in the Octavarium.
-
Learning To Live backwards cured my AIDS.
-
Words And Images.
-
A Dramatic J-turn of Events
-
First a noticeable step down in drumming skill, then later it gets awesome. And at some point some guy is open again.
-
The vice on the lead singer's testicles gets tightened.

"Why does my copy of 'Pull Me Under' begin so suddenly?"

A Dramatic J-turn of Events
You mean a U turn? Or is it calle a J turn where you're from?
Umm... If you play DT backwards, you'd get such great songs as:
Maj esty
The Birthing Foot
Push Me Over
The Babbling Woman (aren't they all? Am I right, fellas?)
Truth
Me Not You
Freezing My Body
Heaven's Washroom
Underture 8291
Understood
Appear
Dishonor Thy Mother
Occupied
In The Name Of Science
The Question Stands Outside
I Stand Far Away From You
Always Too Much
In The Absence of Friends
Occasional Inertia
Bloom
On The Bellies of Demons
Break Me Down, Build Me Up
Found Not Remembered
Tunnels Under Ground
Close To Hell
Above The Depths
True Slumber Suite
The Friend Outside
Thumbnail
Behind The Loin Cloth
Among others!
-
It would be the proggiest music ever.
-
In The Name Of Science
:corn

I can't believe this hasn't been posted yet:
If you play DT backwards, you get the backwards Backwards song!
-
A Palindrome.
Or a Larch.

Dishonor Thy Mother
In The Name Of Science
I Stand Far Away From You
Found Not Remembered
Close To Hell
Among others!
Those are my favorites xD So much lol
If you play DT backwards, JLB seems to deteriorate, until he miraculously discovers food that heals his voice before the "Asleep" album. They also change singers when he's at his best.
-
Considering that DT is not a Satanic band (who's backward masking encourages worshiping Satan and doing drugs), I would imagine the messages in DT's backward lyrics include going to church and eating your vegetables!

The guitar solo in Misunderstood sounds normal.
The story begins where it ended.
A hypnotherapist brings a patient to life, just as he did in a previous life in 1928, but this patient gradually forgets about that.
Edward brings Victoria to life, who gets together with Julian, then splits up, fucks Edward, and gets back together with Julian all amidst their marriage and Julian's spiral into alcoholism.
Mike Portnoy spirals into a descent of drug use and alcoholism.
This (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-1A8N1-YNo) happens, and then he changes his name to Kevin.
John Petrucci is rushed out of the hospital, gets into a car crash as the other driver did not ever see the red light, and then goes to a wedding.
The lights turn off.
-
JLB leaves Dream Theater after 11 studio albums and is replaced by some UFO watching guy. The results are not good.
-
you become an alcoholic over the course of 5 albums
-
Their best album is STILL their 6th album.
-
The band's original name is Ytse Jam, and they have a song on their first album called Majesty
-
At some point, the previously bald keyboardist miraculously grows a full head of hair.

A Palindrome.
Or a Larch.

John Myungs input culminates in him feeling "kinda spooky"

How about "Reamed Threat" or "Retard Ate Hem" ?
-
Metropolis Part 1 becomes a prequel.
-
WDADU becomes their farewell album.
-
Their self-titled album becomes their first, thus making more sense than a lazy decision.
-
Illumination Theory becomes depressing as shit.

I'm pretty sure there's also now a divorce in there somewhere too.

That's OK, because survived everyone.

John Myung returns home from a depressing NYC trip.
God War.
Mike Portnoy becomes decreasingly explicit toward his step father.
Me, not You. (Sounds like glam metal).
Leaves fall, we lock the doors, make love, deception occurs...
Kevin Moore's friend finds love.
It was dry once they hit the swimming pool.

So then, would Moore run up to the bomb and defuse it?

RRRRRAAAAAAOOOOORRRRR.

The Dance of Eternity would still be all over the place.
-
:omg: oh my fuck....
Reading this thread inspired me as a joke to listen to the entirety of the song " Octavarium " played backwards ( in Logic ).
Guys.....
It's STILL 24 minutes long even in reverse. :o
-
Yet another one of those clever hidden nuggets DT put into that album. Amazing!
-
Boggles my ( admittedly awesome ) brain how they managed to do that.
-
If I played Octavarium backwards, it would still be 24 minutes I'd wish I had back.
-
Illumination Theory becomes depressing as shit.
I thought IT already was.
Dream Theater played backwards is Nightmare Cinema. Everybody knows that. :justjen
If I played Octavarium backwards, it would still be 24 minutes I'd wish I had back.
Ouch! Coz, say it isn't so. :(
-
After you listen to ADTOE backwards, Mike Portnoy rejoins the band.
James LaBrie quits the band after their 11th album, Images and Words. He's replaced by Charlie Dominici, but it doesn't work out. Bizarrely, JLB quits at the absolute peak of his vocal powers.
-
They release Images & Words which Mangini points out has similarities to his album " A Dramatic Turn Of Events " but nobody cares because it's much better anyways.

Some Italian guy rambles about being sorry, which in turn freaks out another guy, who then goes home.

Yeah, I realized that as soon as I posted. I was gonna change it, but eh... Lazy.

This is what happens when you play all of Their ALBUMS backwards:
1) When Nightmare and Evening Divide
2) Blind and Mute
3) Dead at the Marquee
4) Asleep
5) Seasons Never Change (or Stay the Same)
6) Rising Out of Oblivion (or Nothingness)
7) Never (or Forever) in a DeadTime
8) Sounds Best Forgotten-Victoria Never Died!
9) Dead Sounds From New York
10) Six (or Negative Six) Degrees of Outer Harmony
11) Hand-Cart of Thoughtlessness
12) Pre-Recorded at Budokan
I Couldn't THINK of one for "Octavarium, so "The Root of All Evil" becomes:
13) The Leaves of All Goodness
14) UnSCored
15) Disorderly Harmony
16) Harmony Comes to a Dead Stop
17) Silver Clouds with Black Linings
18) A Comedic Series of Non-Events
19) Phoned-in at Luna Park
20) Nightmare Cinema
-
I Forgot one:
Phoned-in at Luna Park
-
2) Blind and Mute
I Couldn't THINK of one for "Octavarium, so "The Root of All Evil" becomes:
13) The Tree of All Goodness
14) Scoreless (or UnScored)
15) Disorderly Harmony
2) I would use "Sounds and Gestures"
13) First of all, with Octavarium, the story ends where it began, so I think by that definition, it's still Octavarium backwards and forwards. :lol
Also, that just made me think... "You're the rotted root of all evil in the family tree of all goodness!"
14) I would go with "Strike Out" :lol
-
Man TGP. We've gotten to the point of critiquing other posts in a fun thread?! Go see the world man. You spend more time than I do on a damn computer! :lol

Lol, Not critiquing, just sharing what my choices would be.
-
I know just razzing you. As you can see I'm on as well! :lol Waiting for the boss to get out of work.
-
Besides, I'm sleep deprived and tired. It's too early to go to bed, but getting me off my chair is an impossible task right now. Must post on DTF!

:tup
-
Hey TGP, it's all right. Your input is welcome. especially since you're not taking it too serious, thank GOD! I've been sleep-deprived as well, and just made kind of a spontaneous decision to compose and post my little "backwards list," and not wanting to spend/waste too much time on it, I did the best I could.

Dream Theater backwards = Serious business
-
I Forgot one:
Phoned-in at Luna Park
but that's it forwards

Dead at Solar Urban Development Project?

17) Silver Clouds with Black Linings

18) A Comedic Series of Non-Events
inb4 that's ADTOE forwards
-
Derek takes over for Jordan, and is then demoted to hired gun after one album. Then Jordan comes back, but only for one show.
-
The vast majority of shows feature unreleased content.
-
They decide that Raise The Knife shouldn't be a song about a former manager and Kevin Moore, so they change it up a little, remove the lyrics and produce an instrumental called Showdown.
-
In response to jamesman42: you asked which of their albums had 19 songs on it? My list is actually a parody of ALL of their album TITLES, not (with the exception of "The Root of All Evil") individual songs. And it was supposed to be 20, not 19. So just to clarify the titles I was satirising are as follows:
1) When Dream and Day Unite-1989
2) Images and Words=1992
3) Live at the Marquee-1993
4) Awake-1994
5) A Change of Seasons-1995
6) Falling Into Infinity-1997
7) Once in a LiveTime-1998
8) Scenes from a Memory-1999
9) Live Scenes From New York-2001
10) Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence-2002
11) Train of Thought-2003
12) Live at Budokan-2004
13) Octavarium-2005
14) Score-2006
15) Systematic Chaos-2007
16) Chaos in Motion-2008
17) Black Clouds & Silver Linings-2009
18) A Dramatic Series of Events-2011
19) Live at Luna Park-2013
20) Dream Theater-2013
-
Thank you for clarifying that. :) I figured you made a mistake in what you said, and your response has reassured me that you were talking about album titles, not song titles. I really do appreciate the response!!!

Okay, I guess I understand the concept, but... I don't think I've ever seen anyone do something like that. I'd think a U turn would be more commonplace, no?

Illumination Theory becomes depressing as shit.
Always know
Always know
Always know
You'll always know
Always know
Always know
Until you breeze through the light's spark
You'll always know that you're not alive.
Apathy grows within your heart
Like a glacier cold as fright
On those hot and short daylights
You will always be alone
If you close both your eyes
And lose your trust in love
When you resist all forms of light
You can flee the brightest days
To really numb the hopelessness in life
You must relish all the pain

Sounds like something Kevin Moore would write.

Their best album is STILL their 6th album.
Uhhh. backwards that's Train of Thought. :lol

I actually listened to DT backwards today. Weirdest shit ever!

EDIT:
i am the reviving HAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNDDD

I've got one for Octavarium! Since Musically it's a tribute to Genesis, and lyrically it's based on the the movie "Awakenings": Robin Williams discovers the cure for encephalitis while reading the Book of Revelation and listening to the band Exodus doing a cover of the Metallica song "The Four Horsemen!"

If I played Octavarium backwards, it would still be 24 minutes I'd wish I had back.
Ouch! Coz, say it isn't so. :(
It's so. Although, that's probably not fair. Train of Thought and Octavarium, in particular, I didn't listen to very much. They were starting to get away from the original Dream Theater that I fell in love with - I&W and Awake - and moving more into longer songs that were structured in such a way that they weren't holding my attention. Contrast that with long songs from previously - Scarred is the longest song on Awake and it feels like it's over too soon. Every second of that song has my attention. Same with LtL and Metropolis from I&W. I don't know what it was about ToT and 8vm, but they just didn't really grab me like others.
Now I will say that I initially didn't like M2SFAM. When I first got it, I listened to it once and put it away. Never touched it again. Didn't care for it at all. About 8 years later, I joined up here, and continued to read about the love for the album and how, at the time it came out, MP and others continually referred to it as the album that really defined who DT is. So with that I said "Maybe I was too harsh or short sighted". I listened to it again.
It was like a completely brand new album that I'd never heard before and I was instantly in love with it. I don't know what changed, but it was something. I'm glad.
So with that, maybe I should give ToT and 8vm another chance. I can't guarantee I'll have the same change of heart, but I suppose it can't hurt to try.

I can relate to almost every word of that.............except I still only listen to 3 songs off SFAM (Overture, Fatal Tragedy, Strange Deja Vu). Listening to it "as an album/story" doesn't save the songs for my ears.
