Title: Elements of Persuasion vs DT12 (Drum related question)
Post by: goo-goo on June 19, 2014, 07:29:54 PM
Would you consider the drum mix on EoP similar to the drum mix on DT12? I mean, both were engineered by Chycki. To my ears, the drum mix sounds very similar. I do prefer the snare sound on EoP...seems like it sounds a bit clearer and less "triggered" (?).

What do you guys think?

I think you might be onto something there. They do actually have a similar style to them (except that DT12 uses generally more advanced technique). It's funny that you mention it though because I always found ADTOE drum sound to be slightly reminiscent of the more soft and subtle drum mix on the Mulmuzzler (mostly considering the 1st one, although from what I recall, the 2nd Mulmuzzler is fairly similar).

EOP has a way better drum sound IMO, as it's got much more punch and the drums don't sound like a drum machine. I have no idea why the drums sound so weak on DT12, considering that both albums were engineered by Rich Chycki.

I hate to say it, but on direct comparison, I think I actually prefer the DT12 drum sound overall.
The toms are kinda dead and low, and I'm not a fan of the detuned snare, but they're not bad for a metal mix. The biggest problem is that they just don't work for more diverse music like DT. You just can't have a drum sound like that for a ballad like AFTR. Kills it.
That drum sound works fine on EoP, being a guitar heavy metal album, but the bass/snare do sound very triggered.

The room comes into play when you're talking about drum sounds.   You could have the same engineer, recording the same drummer on the same kit, using the same microphones and still get noticeably different results if they recorded some tracks in two different rooms.  Not that I'm saying any of this is the case... it's just a quasi-relevant thing to consider when trying to get to the bottom of what ? and Onno are talking about.

I think that EoP's drum sound (and production) fits the genre quite well. I love how that album sounds.
