Title: Something interesting on Wikipedia...
Post by: Zyzzyva17 on February 19, 2014, 02:17:56 PM
I was reading the Wikipedia page for "money note," which apparently is jargon for a dramatic high vocal note. In the section of examples, it described instances from 3 songs:

Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On
Dream Theater - Learning to Live

One of these things is not like the others. Personally, I don't think it belongs in the article, but it was still cool to see.

Should look like:

Dream Theater - Learning to Live
Dream Theater - Octavarium
Dream Theater - You Not Me

Why shouldn't it be in the article?  ;D

It is a money not though. Look at how many people were disappointed when he didnt hit it on LSFNY.

I think it does.  Maybe not so recognized in pop culture, but it's still a pinnacle money note, like what Ben_Jamin said.

I think it's a good example, nice to see the reference.  :lol

It totally belongs there, because now some random person is going to be like "who dat?" and check it out and have their mind blown by an awesome JLB high note.
Hopefully they don't get put off by the rest of the song. :P

It totally is the money note. Like the money shot, it's the moment everyone's waiting for. Awesome to see it on there! Look how disappointing it is on LSFNY when he doesn't hit it. When I saw them perform I&W in its entirety in Newcastle several years ago he hit it and the entire auditorium collectively ejaculated. It was a beautiful moment.

Yeah... if they're gonna include rock money shot's... the nod goes to Ian Gilliam- Child in Time or Rob Halford for Victim of Changes (Unleashed in the East) and some versions of Dreamer Deceiver I've heard would melt your ear drums....

Haven't listend to it in years... fucking epic...talk about vintage Priest... :hefdaddy

It's great that it got a mention.

Another money note that comes to mind that , through the wonders of the internet (and touring), has become very well known without ever appearing on an album

That was epic. Not only the high note (:hefdaddy) but the song is amazing; I should get into Nightwish :lol

I've only ever been a fairly casual Nightwish fan - I'm really only getting into them seriously now in preparation for her (Floor's)  first studio album with them - if the songs are there it'll certainly be worth the wait.

I personally didn't find it that disappointing on LSFNY when he doesn't hit it. He still does a pretty high note (C#) and it's still sung powerfully. I also love how he sings during the guitar solo thereafter, I think that definitely made up for it.

That it is -  I'm not normally a fan of re-records but I hope with their next album they do a bonus disc where she re-records that one and a dozen other of their best tracks.  Tarja was great but Floor gives it all a lot more "balls" for want of a better word.

I actually love how James sounds on LSFNY as a whole. He was clearly struggling at the time, but what he lacks in range and consistency on that album he more than makes up for with the raw power and passion in his voice... and indeed, moments like that help too...  ;D

Naw they only need to hear this to understand:

Lost Horizon - Think Not Forever

No money involved but I think he might have been paid in testicles.

Yes, all get into Nightwish, especially now that Floor (countrymate!) has joined. It's my favorite band besides DT :metal

(ontopic) I still can't grasp how a guy can sing that high and clean. And respect for James that he's still working so hard on his voice nowadays :hefdaddy

I agree it didn't bother in the slightest, although my first time watching LSFNY was before I knew exactly what to expect anyway. It's been a pleasant surprise to hear him hit it every now and then as it's normally very powerful note at the same time.

Interestingly, anyone that's heard the I&W demos will already have noticed this, but there's actually vocals during that guitar solo not unlike what James does at LSFNY after the 'not F# moment'.

I'm pretty sure those are on the I&W version, just really really low in the mix

I'll repeat the endorsement of LtL as a money note, because that's exactly what JLB pulls off there. That is the highlight of the song, I think, for most people. AND, it literally has no other purpose in the song than to be that money note. It doesn't serve some larger purpose with the vocal melodies. It is the JLB equivalent of a 2-minute-long JP guitar solo.

And I'll very strongly repeat the Nightwish recommendation. I've been listening to them a lot lately and have been loving their music, especially their latest album, Imaginaerum, and of course the recent DVD with Floor, Showtime, Storytime (which includes the performance linked above). Just note that they've actually had three women sing for them over the years: Tarja who was the first and most popular (very operatic style—not like "high clean vocals" operatic, but "straight-up opera" operatic), Anette who was second and divided the fanbase (much more pop-oriented style), and Floor who is the current singer and is stylistically something of a mix between the two with an additional element of "toughness."

And Marco (Hietala, bassist/male singer). Just because I can't not mention Marco.

Marco, otherwise known as the best singer in Nightwish. :P

I would call you a heretic, but Marco is just awesome enough that I'll let you get away with just being called a scoundrel. Still. Nay nay, Floor is the best singer in Nightwish.

Really? Wow I'll have to pay attention to that next time. It's amazing the things we still don't pick up on even after listening to these songs hundreds of times.  :loser:
