Everybody was saying this when the song first came out, but I've heard "Know that you're alive" since the first time I listened to it.
How about "Noble embrace" instead of "Noble and brave"?
That's "no more embrace" according to my ear.

O_O
I too thought it was joy in life.
I'm going to keep thinking it's joy in life life.
I always thought it sounded like "that you're alive." Never heard "joy in life" until I saw it on some lyrics site and went "..What?"
Luckily looking at the album booklet I was relieved to find that it was "you're alive."
Imo it is the better lyric of the two.

:lol So true! I love James, but that clearly isn't one of his strenghts. On an off topic, on The Looking Glass I thought he said "You're diggin up a coma" and went WAT? ??? The I saw the lyrics and "Ohhhh, that makes more sense".
To really feel the joy in life....
...you'll never know that you're alive.
It's both :P

How can you confuse "coma" with "coal mine?" ;)
By not being a native english speaker with some hearing problems I guess :lol. I always have trouble with lyrics anyway, for any band, years of english studying haven't changed that.
By the way, is it coal mine or gold mine??? :-\
Gold mine and I actually checked :lol

This reminds me of something Ozzy Osbourne said about an interview, where the interviewer was making a point about the negative influence of the music, with the lyric of "I tell you to end your life". Being puzzled by the lyric, Ozzy thought it through and realized he was referring to the line in the song Paranoid that is actually "I tell you to ENJOY life". Bit of a different meaning. :lol

That one is understandable, though, because of the way the word "enjoy" is pronounced. The syllable accents are messed up because of the way the word fits into the melody. I've always understood the lyric correctly, but it's always bothered me how it was force-fit into the melody to begin with. If the words don't fit the meter properly, come up with different words.
I love the way some singers can bend words to fit. James from Manic Street Preachers & Billie from Green Day to name two.

Ah yeah, I never thought about the phrasing, but that does make it fit better with the incorrect lyric better. I've never noticed it until you pointed it out, but it is slightly awkward phrasing. It's not WDADU bad though.

First of all, he says "to really feel the joy in life" in the beggining of this movement. So it's not that hard to believe that this phrase would be repeated at the end of the section.
And also it does sounds similiar. "KNOW THATYOUR (=Know the joy) ALIVE (=in life)". Especially when JLB prenounces the "Alive" somewhat like "Ilive".

I actually quoted this as part of a journal assignment I had, I remember checking the DT12 booklet numorous times to see if it was joy in life or you're alive.
I still don't know. Even after hearing it last night, I'm sure I heard 'joy in life' but the studio version to me is '...you're alive'
I'm still confused.

What the hell. Open your ears everyone, James cleary says 'know that you're alive.' If he is saying 'joy in life' he must have one hell of a speech impediment.
Listen to 17:20, the one before the climax, James clearly says 'you're alive'. And then listen to 17:27, you can hear the 't' on the end of the word 'that', then he says 'alive'. The alive is a little less clear because of what he is doing with the notes, but you can hear it's 'THAT YOU'RE ALIVE'.

Yeah, The Looking Glass came on at my mates place the other day and I jokingly sang along 'digging up a coal mine' only to discover that my friend actually thought those were the words. We talked about Coal mine not making a lot of sense and he commented how he couldn't here the 'd' sound at the end of 'gold mine'.
I also can't unhear 'debate this faggots just cause'.
I have to say that the whole 'joy in life' seems like it's getting confused from the first line that actually does say that. As for Noble and brave, I needed that one corrected because I was hearing noble embrace. xD
Why are people so surprised that people are mishearing the lyrics? Have you never heard something wrong the first time and then continually heard it wrong upon further listens? It's a pretty common phenomenon.

Know that you're alive is a much better/much more meaningful line.

A gallup snapshot poll taken earlier today shows that half of DTF'ers think this post is humorous, twenty-five percent do not, and still another twenty-five percent aren't sure what to think.
Guys, enough is enough. Remember life is hanging in the balance You just have reached the turning point.
It sounds very much like "know the joy in life" to me.
I've heard "Never know that you're alive" from the first time and it doesn't sound like joy in life unless I really want to hear it there. But I understand why some people may hear it there, the first moment is probably important because it will influence what you will hear next time a lot, unless you will read the lyrics :)
