Title: 80s Glam/Metal Vocal Showdown #31: Rose vs Astbury
Post by: jingle.boy on November 25, 2013, 01:47:37 PM
Let's get back to a couple of names that should illicit a little more participation, and are closer to the glam/metal sound.  In their day, they were absolute heavy-weight lead singers.  The Cult has certainly endured much better than GnR, but c'mon... Appetite for Destruction is (was?) the best selling debut album of all time... thanks in no small part to Axl's unique sound and delivery.

He's a douchebag now, but I'll take Axl based on the debut alone.

I had AFD a year or so before they hit bigtime in the UK and I loved it initially. But I came to loathe Axl and his cat being strangled voice and his attitude. Seeing them live (and he turned up on time for once) they were abyssmal. I'd lost all interest in them long before the awful Illusion albums came out.

I'm not much of a Cult fan but they had one great album, Sonic Temple. Astbury for me as he doesn't sound like the RSPCA (ASPCA) needs to be called.

I'm not going to vote, as I'm not too familiar with The Cult.

Still want to check in to say that Axl Rose's voice is one of the things that turns me off about GnR the most.

There is no denying Axl's (and GnR's) influence, or the distinctiveness of Axl's voice.  But that being said, he was never a "good" singer by any stretch.  Astbury was and is.  Gotta pick him, even though I never really got into The Cult.

I was a big GnR fan back in the day. Never got into the Cult. I wasn't a fan of Astbury's voice.

That said, when I listen to GnR now, Axl's voice is grating on me.

Still the vote goes to Axl.

AFD is top 10 all time greatest albums ever. I will always love it for many reasons.

That said, I voted Astbury. I like his voice much better.

This is tough.  Astbury is clearly the "better" singer, but Axl's voice is so distinctive, and fit so well with G'n'R's classic music.  I try to separate my opinion of the person from their art as much as possible, but Axl really makes that tough with his off-the-charts levels of douchebaggery.  So, I dunno.  I'll vote later.

I normally wouldn't vote here probably but I despise Axl enough to vote against him.

I'm not sure who I'll vote for. I'm not familiar with the Cult and while I love the classic GnR songs, I'd definitely admit that Rose is a pretty terrible singer (though his voice definitely fit the band).

Fun story though: My mom and my uncle both grew up with Axl as kids in Lafayette, Indiana. They went to different schools, but they shared some of the same friends. Apparently Axl got picked on all the time in middle school and high school. From what I heard, he had a habit of babbling on and on about how he was gonna go on to be a rock star one day as he'd get shoved into the lockers. :lol

Anyone take note of which two legendary 80s vocalists are still to come in the final pairing?

Bon Jovi vs Rick Astley? Joey Tempest?

Already did JBJ (he smoked Joe Elliot in match #3).  Good guess on Tempest, but I've got him in the next category.
