Title: Have you met DT members?
Post by: tuto on September 12, 2013, 12:35:41 AM
A thread where we can share our experiences meeting Dream Theater members. Where was it? and how were they like?

I did a meet and greet back during their Systematic Chaos tour in Dallas.  It was surreal being up close and person with them.  Something funny I remember was that I had brought my friends Systematic Chaos album cover to have it signed by John Myung because my friend was in Afghanistan at the time.  He only wanted Myung's signature because my friend is a bassist.  I passed by James before getting to John and James had it hand out ready to sign the CD but I told him "No thanks, my friend only wants John's signature" and then James gave me the most puzzled look haha.

On the other side of that story..I had my CD signed by all of them and even brought a piano key to have Jordan sign because I play piano. They were all super nice and were very chatty when all of us meet and greeters came up to them!

I met JP at a guitar clinic back during the gigantour. He was really nice, shook his hand and had him sign a few things.

I met JP back in 95 on the Awake tour when my dad did an interview with him for Swedish Radio. A lot of fun to spend 25-30 minutes with him but I was really nervous and young at that time.

Met the entire band on the day SFAM was released (minus JP who was away on a clinic) at a record store on LI.

The coolest thing was probably being part of the fan-chanting thing on SC back in 2007 when I was still living in NY. MP was very cool to us and while the album is probably my least favorite of theirs, it was still a cool moment to be part of.

Did the meet and greet for ADTOE and MM was as you would expect, giddy as hell to be there.  JP was his typical laid back, polite self.  Jordan was surprisingly talkative.  The process was weird because you just go down the line and don't want to take up too much time but also want to get your moneys worth so I tried to think up something to say to each one.  Jordan is, with all due respect, my least favorite or maybe should I say the member I identify with the least, so I just basically said I love the new album and then he started to talk my ear off about how happy he is with it and its the first one in a while he really just has the urge to listen to for fun.

Then I got to James, my favorite member, and I told him how much I love his lyrics and was really bummed the solo tour was canceled.  He got that dry Canadian sarcasm and practically rolled his eyes and said, "yeah, because someone really screwed up".  So I praised him some more and practically begged him to write more lyrics for the next DT album (and we all know how well that worked out).  Then he stuck out his hand to shake mine.  That was pretty cool because the person in charge of that event cautioned us all of shaking their hands since it was early in the tour and they didn't want to pass germs around so there wasn't a lot of hand shakes but James initiated it so it was a small but very cool gesture.

John Myung was quiet but also extended his hand to shake mine.  I believe I just told him how happy I was that he wrote lyrics again.

Later I met MM at a clinic and he was, as you would expect, happy as hell to be there and share his passion for music.

I met JR in 09' on the Prog. Nation tour. My brother and I were out walking the streets in Milwaukee and we were headed back to the hotel, when he looked at me and said "isn't that Rudess?" Looked up and Jordan and his wife were just standing there talking.

I ran up to him like a giddy 7 year old girl who just saw Justin Bieber and completely med an a$$ of myself by barging in on their conversation. Jordan looked at me and just said, excuse me for a moment. He finished talking with his wife and I immediately apologized for being such a rude jerk and he told me it was no problem.

We had a brief conversation....can't remember verbatim but it was along the lines of 'you're awesome' and he took some pics with me and my brother and the two other guys we were with. He was very cool, very laid back.....in fact I think he'd have talked to us longer but we were all kind of star struck and tongue tied.

I met MP at a store appearance at 'The Funky Monkey' in Kansas City for the SC Tour. I drew him a picture of his name on tribal art.....waited in line and gave it to him. Snapped a pic with him (they were ushering the line pretty fast) but as I walked away he got my attention and said 'Thank you for the gift'. I later saw in a 'rock juice' vid Jordan shot in the back stage before that nights show the picture I drew MP sitting on a table in their dressing room. So, there's a small chance that may still be in his possession.

Over the years I've been fortunate enough to meet (and in many cases, know) all the guys in the band, including Chris Collins, Charlie Dominici, Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian. All the guys have been great every time, appreciative, humble and just nice guys to chat with about the band, current album, the tour, other bands and other things of interest. And when I've done formal interviews with them, they've always been gracious and talkative.

Since I've been a fan since 1989 and been a friend of the band for many years, I've had many opportunities to chat with them. That being the case, there are some occasions that stand out to me that I'll list below, but I would like to mention that I'm not trying to toot my own horn in doing so, but rather to just share some neat experiences I've had.

• the first time I met them was at a "music clinic" which really was a 45 minute Q&A session with the whole band, JP playing an unaccompanied guitar piece and a signing session in January 1993. I have a video of it, and I managed to ask a lot more questions than any one else! Little did I know that years later I would get to know them on a personal basis. A side note: Kevin really was quite a funny guy with many of his answers.
• on 2 separate occasions in Feb 1997, having 2 hour phone conversations (for a total of 4 hours) with MP going over all the setlists that DT had played up until that time. MP referred to them as "the interviews from hell". From these phone calls, I transcribed all the info, which became the basis for the DT tourography (and how I later got my nickname from a fellow DT fan).
• not at a DT gig, but after the Feb 1, 1999 LTE gig at the Roxy in LA, I got to go with MP, JP and JR, along with MP's father Howard and a few others to the Rainbow for late night pizza
• joining my friend Matty-mo to do an interview with James in Milwaukee in 2002; Matt didn't have a lot to ask James, so he asked me to sit in and we had a great time, with James extending the interview a couple times when Rikk, the tour manager, popped his head in saying that the time was up. This ended up getting published in an issue of the Theatre of Dreams fanzine.
• doing an interview with MP pool-side in San Diego in 2002. This also was published in an issue of the Theatre of Dreams fanzine.
• not at a DT gig again (rather before the first Amazing Journey show), but getting to be a part of the audio commentary for the Cygnus and the Sea Monsters DVD, along with MP and Paul Gilbert in a small room full of sound equipment where we had less space than a broom closet!
• attending the aftershow for the Radio City Music Hall show, which had a who's who of musicians, along with most of the band members' families - a great way to end the tour and the road trip I had been on.
• going to Charlie D's house, meeting his (then) wife, going for lunch, doing an interview (I think was about 2 hours) and him showing me a bunch of cool WDaDU-era memorabilia he had (much of which he has since sold off, like some handwritten lyric sheets and the original Majesty symbol he drew)
• and the last aftershow that I attended in Anaheim 2012, where James introduced me to his son Chance, and JP introduced me to his wife Rena.

I've met each of them a few times.  My most memorable was when I met Jordan while peeing at a Steven Wilson solo show in 2011.  I was taking a leak at the urinal in the empty bathroom at the Best Buy Theatre in Manhattan, and someone walks up to the urinal directly to my left.  I glance over and see a long white beard.  I'm buzzed, and I say something like: "No way, Jordan, is that you or am I just really drunk?"  He say's "It's me!"  Then we talked for a minute about something as we both peed.  I saw him the next night at his own solo show in Manhattan, and I reminded him that we met while peeing the night before.  He says, "Oh yeah, you and I go way back!"

All kinds of occasions, but noticeably missing one in particular...

Hey, Scotty!  What about seeing Portnoy after the Transatlantic show in Downey in 2010?  I guess it wasn't as memorable for you as it was for me, but having Neal Morse get in my face when he mistakenly thought Mike was upset when Mike mistakenly thought I was the admin for 5/8 was...memorable.

Oh, and then the infamous "Uh...so how did you guys get back here?" "Oh, someone left the 'band access' door unlocked" incident...  :lol

I saw him the next night at his own solo show in Manhattan, and I reminded him that we met while peeing the night before.  He says, "Oh yeah, you and I go way back!"

I also forgot....

Met MP at a signing before a SC show in Milwaukee.  It was a run of the mill thing.

2 years later I decided to skip most of the opening bands...I think it was prog nation, and I went on the river walk in Milwaukee and went to some bar around the corner.  MP was sitting on a tour case talking on the phone.  There were two guys standing at a respectful distance waiting for him to get off the phone.  It was very odd to walk right by the drummer of one of my favorite bands as he casually talks on the phone.  I flashed the horns as I walked by and he flashed them back.

Then about ten minutes later I saw a striking blonde woman walk out of the backstage door with two 10-15 year old looking kids.  She walked away and then a minute later started talking in my direction and I'm like, "Why does she look familiar?"  Turned out to be JP's wife and I'm assuming two of his three kids.  They ended up going back in...likely to avoid some creepy guy staring at them.

Met the band on a meet and greet before their show in Perth, December 2009. They were all very  kind, and the guy I chatted with the longest was James - back then I was thinking of moving to Canada, which ended up not happening (so far...). Got my BCSL CD booklet singed and got to see them in the front row:

Then here´s Mike and me at a hotel in São Paulo last year - he was filling in for Bob Jarzombek with Fates Warning, and loved my Zappa shirt.

I met Portnoy a half dozen times while he was still in the band, have met Rudess 3 or 4 times, Petrucci once, and Myung once. Most of the times for Portnoy it wasn't at/around DT gigs. Hell, at least 2 of the times he was just attending the same show as me... maybe 3 times.

And I met Sherinian, but he was no longer a member at that point.

My wife and I have had the pleasure of meeting DT twice; Jones Beach in 07 and DC in 12.  Both times they were all very humble, very personable, and genuinely happy (imo) to meet a bunch of screaming fans!  Three incidents standout from my experiences:

In 07, my wife was extremely excited during the photo shot and screamed whilst throwing up "the horns"... she just happened to be standing beside JLB when she did it.  After the photo, JP immediately asked JLB if he could still hear!  Jordan also decided to place his fingers in his ears during the next photo with both myself and my wife.

During the same M&G, my wife gave all the members a china rose she purchased outside the venue; JR was especially greatfull (I think he blushed a little  :blush)... but JM... stood up and shook my hand and gave my wife a hug.  She told him (JM) that he was her favorite when she gave him the rose.

In 2012, I brought the hard-case that contains the two-volume original Lifting Shadows (red with the Majesty symbol) for the guys to sign.  MM said "Are you sure you want me to sign this; I'm not on it?"... I said "Of course I want you to sign it... you're part of the family now!".  That got a chuckle from JLB.  I also brought MM some "Redneck hot-sauce" and super-hot Beef Jerky to satisfy his pre-show cravings.  JP said "be careful with that, you might be a redneck if you eat to much of it"... I don't know if he meant to channel Jeff Foxworthy with that comment or not, but that's how I took it!

Again, of the celebrities I've met, DT are the most humble.

Met Jordan at a Best Buy a couple of years back.  We were both looking at hard drives and I was very surprised when I realized he was standing right next to me! We spoke for a bit.  I introduced myself, said I was a huge fan, etc.  This was around the time of the LTE shows and I mentioned that I ended up not buying a ticket and would miss out on the NYC show.  He had me enter my email address into his phone and comped my tickets for the 2nd BB King show!  Ended up being one of the best shows I've ever been to.  Incredibly nice guy and a night I'll never forget.

The closest I've ever gotten was when I was twelve. I was at the July 10, 2010 Worcester Palladium show (which actually turned out to be MP's last headliner with DT, correct?). My dad and I got there early, and after getting some crappy pizza, got in line. (We heard ANtR as the soundcheck as we walked by toward the pizza dump.) Now, pretty much everyone showed up a few minutes later, so we were right behind these guys:
and we got a nice view of the people lined up down MLK Jr. Boulevard.
Anyway, the tour buses were parked on the side of the road, and I was standing 20' away from them at the most. Jordan suddenly comes out of one (presumably after this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUhkHQ8BocE) interview) and walks into the side door, near where I was standing. Everyone in line screams his name, he waves back.

The whole thing lasted probably 10 minutes, with me and JLB talking for maybe 5. I asked MP about the then rumoured South American Tour, and he said it was still to be discussed/confirmed. I froze in front of Jordan and Petrucci, and managed to talk reasonably to Myung, although his lack of response to what I said kinda ruined it a little bit. With JLB I said I was Brazilian but working for a mining company in Perth, which had an office in Canada. He said "you´ll have a hard time to adjust to the weather over there...we usually get to 10 feet of snow when its the height of winter. But hey, if you wanna live there, it´s a great place. Good luck in Canada, bro!" and gave me a fist bump. That was totally unexpected, as I thought he was one of the most nonchalant when talking to fans. But it totally changed my opinion about this. MP seemed a bit burn out and I can´t blame him - travel to and through Oz can be exhausting. But Myung could have made more of an effort when talking to fans...that was my opinion anyway, maybe it will change again when I meet them in Spain next January!

I met some of the band in 2002 thanks to Setlist Scotty at the Wiltern Theater in LA, CA. I didn't go for any photos or autographs. It was a weird scene IMO. Portnoy knew who I was from his forum, kind of got a cold shoulder, I wonder why? LOL I did ask Jordan about a new age keyboardist David Lanz because he seemed to have some similar influences and he said he didn't know him, strange I thought. A Nightmare to Remember! LOL

I'm not sure exactly what you get with DT's meet and greets, but speaking about the only MnG package I've ever purchased, the best thing I got was the best seat in the house for a Joe Satriani concert. Of course, meeting them is great. And the merchandise is cool. But for me, I would only do MnG for someone/a band I've never met before, and if it came with an amazing seat.

Well it was like 11 years ago and I can't remember yesterday. I think I was just very vocal of MP on his forum, not rude, but I spoke my mind. I wasn't one to think everything he said or did made him a God like many made him to be. When I said who I was on his forum he was like "Yeah I know who you are", awkward!

And Jordan not knowing David Lanz blew me away. His influence was so obvious at the time and in 1988 Lanz's Cristofori’s Dream was number one on the Billboard adult/alternative New Age album chart, where it stayed for 27 weeks, making him the first New Age artist to hit number one on Billboard’s list. How can a great keyboardist not know of another that's so popular? Oh well! LOL

The best story so far, hands down.  :lol

Actually had tickets for the SDOIT tour at PNC...A few days earlier managed to win backstage access (MEET AND GREET) from Satriani's website....gave my pass to a couple of friends because Satch's meet and Greet was actually during DT's set. After DT finished met up with friends they gave me back my laminate and I said what the  hell, lets see if I can still get back, even though it was a Satch and not a DT access pass.

Got to meet Jordan, MP and JLB, as both John's took off after the show to go home to NY

Met  MP later at a signing....had him sign my Big Book (AA )  he wished me luck in my sobriety and said no one had ever asked him to sign one before

Met the whole current line-up @Massey Hall in Toronto in 2011. One of the most memorable nights of my life. All members were so approachable, gracious, and humble. Having met a number of 'rock stars' before I am totally comfortable with celebrities. DT were such a cut above the others in every way, just like their music. Shaking JP's bear paw and having my picture with him was obviously the best feeling as a guitarist, but all members were awesome. JMX was more talkative then I expected and having been a massive fan of MM since he was in Extreme, we had the longest conversation. It was surreal. I should point out that I didn't have a VIP package for that show. All members came out after the gig from their tour bus and made sure all of the people that were still hanging around got signatures and pics. They don't owe us anything, and for them to do that speaks volumes as to what type of people they are and how they view us. All this on a night when I had seats on JP's side near the front. I had bear fur that had shed on me when I got home. Best concert experience I will ever have.  :hefdaddy

I've met the guys (well some) before & after some shows at their hotel. I live at a city where it's easy to predict where they'll stay, the promoter always books the same place.

First time was for BCSL tour, got pictures with MP, had 3/5 autographs on the red cover version of lifting shadows. Pirate was feeling bad so no shot there, and JM was REALLY pissed since on the way from the airport some stupid teenage fans started "racing" chasing after their van and they almost crashed. So yeah, no shot there. JP was even more pissed than JM and I ended up thinking he was a jerk.

Quite the opposite!!!
Last year we (gf&me) caught him & MM after the G3 show (same hotel, plus talked with satch and LaRue&Morse, it was awesome) and JP was on cloud nine. He probably talked to the 6 or 8 fans that were at the hotel for about 30 minutes about everything, asked about our favorite stuff from ADTOE, signed stuff and took pictures. It was most amazing to see how happy he was. MM is a rather humble (and short!) guy, he apologized for not being able to shake hands ( he had injured his wrist and was barely able to play ) but came down, spoke for a while and took more pictures.

I have to say it's one of my most precious memories. I don't know how the M&G ambiance is, but if you ever learn where they're staying, definitely go there after the show, while they're still on the post-coitusshow hype.

Did a meet and greet in Chicago on the SC tour in 2007. Great show. Center stage, front row seats for the show too. Amazing night. The meet and greet was nice. All of the guys were really down to earth. They even told us not to shake the guys hands, since it was before the show, i guess. But the guys wanted to shake hands anyway. JP took a guys guitar and started playing Freebird on it, someone yelled, "You're playing it wrong". He laughed and so did the rest of us. Nice group of guys who happen to be amazing musicians.

I've gotten to meet MP twice.  The first time was at a drum clinic he did in Rockaway NJ in the Fall of 1995.  It was during the brief period he was playing Mapex drums.  When I told him I was gonna see him and DT at the Long Island show of their first Home For The Holidays tour, he asked why I wasn't going to the Jersey show.  They hadn't announced the Birch Hill show at the time I bought my tickets.  The second time I met him was at a Sam Ash signing he had the morning of the Sea Bright NJ show on the SFaM tour.  As usual, he was great with everyone and signed whatever you had for him.  He was a little bummed when I told him the Pink Floyd Pulse DVD was postponed again.

I got to meet John Petrucci and Jordan briefly before the same Sea Bright SFaM show.  When they both were making their way from the bus to the venue for soundcheck, they stopped and signed and chatted with some of us who were waiting to get in.  Not quite as memorable as the Portnoy encounters but still cool.

I was lucky enough to run in to JP on the street before a gig in Leeds in 2011. I shook his hand and talked to him for a little bit about playing the guitar and got a photo with him. I'm sure I came across as some kind of crazy, nervous fan, but he was a really nice and polite guy. It was a pretty surreal experience, and I felt kind of depressed the day after because it was like 'well, nothing that great is every going to happen again'  :lol

Met MP twice after him being in DT. First time with AdMob in Vienna in 2012, after the show, when he was super nice, immediately recalled some memories about the only DT concert in Croatia and even mentioned some odd news about Dave Mustaine being hit by a stone during a metal festival in Croatia, which was current at that time. That surprised me a lot.
Yeah, my avatar is taken from that meeting.

Then, I met him later that year with FC, I won a slot for the meet&greet in Cologne; unfortunately I had nothing to bring with me to get it signed at the meeting. Neal Morse was then kind enough to put some extra words on the pre-signed poster and MP, upon realizing I hadn't run to the store to get some FC vinyl or whatever else to boost their sales, apparently became a bit cocky and when I told him that it's nice meeting him again after AdMob he turned totally sarcastic and said "Oooooh yeah, I totally remember who you are!" Of course I didn't expect him to remember me but I had hoped for a "better" response. Dave LaRue and Steve Morse saved this m&g with their kindness, I guess.....

Yes. I think I've told this story a couple times but after the NYC Opeth show a few years ago my friend and I ran into Mike Portnoy and his friends waiting for their car. We chatted for a little bit but the kicker was Portnoy offered my friend $5 for the left over White Castle he had. Out of defense for not having lunch the next day, he said no.

I have a When Dream and Day Unite vinyl, and since its their debut album I would love to have it signed by them if I buy a Meet&Greet, but seeing there's only JP and JM left of that original line up, do you think it would be inappropriate to ask James, Jordan and MM to sign it too?

You should, like, go on a quest to have it signed by them, MP, DS, KM, CD, SS, and CC.

I know most people don't mind signing stuff they aren't on as long as the person is sure they want it.

Not really but I almost caught John Petrucci's pick. In fact,I touched it and took it. Some faggot took it right out of my freaking hand.  :censored
But yeah I saw Jordan and said hi to him once but that's about it.

I've met both Mikes, Jordan and John Petrucci.  I met MP at a meet and greet at a Sam Ash in Orlando before the Progressive Nation show in 08.  I met Jordan and Mike Mangini after the Chicago show on the first leg of the ADTOE tour in 2011, and I met John Petrucci a few weeks ago at a clinic at Sweetwater in Fort Wayne.

I've met them numerous times over the years. The first time was back on June 9, 1995 at the Birch Hill Night Club in New Jersey.  Since then I've met every band member a few times. Back when they used to play smaller clubs, they would come out after the show and hang out with the fans which I always thought was extremely cool.

I even had the privilege of sitting with my best friend during an interview he was doing with MP for a local radio station. I also remember missing out on a JP interview my friend was doing because our other friend unfortunately tagged along and DTs management didn't think we needed three people interviewing him. Afterward  though we got to hang out in the club while the band was hanging out. This was at Mulcahy's in Long Island if I remember correctly. I remember my friend asking JP if there was going to be a Metropolis sequel and I said it should be called Metropolis Part 2: The Continuing Adventures of the Miracle and the Sleeper.  John and Rena found that pretty hysterical.

I have a photo somewhere of me meeting Derek at a Savatage show.  I also have a photo of meeting JP at a guitar clinic he did up in Connecticut.

I think that's it.  Not as impressive as Scotty's but I consider myself pretty damn lucky to have met some of my idols.

I met them all on the Octivarium tour and Petrucci a couple other times.  JP is one of the most polite, down to earth people I have met, let alone for someone who has accomplished all that he has. Cant think of anything negative to say about them from personal experiences.
