So heavy, so awesome, so good. :metal
-
Gotta love that Puppies riff :metal
-
The best one-chord metal riff ever besides Forsaker by Katatonia :2metal: I also love Kevin's keys (surprising, I know) and James performs some of his finest vocals ever. The mellow sections are really great and the atmosphere in them is just as heavy as in the other parts of the song.
-
Highly appreciated! Maybe the best MP lyrics resist sodomy. And even when Chaos in Progress says that the outro riff in TDEN is the heaviest they have ever done, it's got to be the outro riff here.
-
LOVE the keys after "I'll never hurt you agaaaaaain!" and the bass groove following that :metal :metal

Oh yeah, hearing the SDV melody rules, no matter which song it's in :heart

One of the first DT songs I heard, and from that moment on I immediately started associating that kind of note progressions (I'm a musician and I can't explain better or talk about modes or whatever :-[ ) like the puppies on acid riff and Kevin's keys to "the Dream Theater sound".
One of their darkest songs but it has the Awake vibe written all over it. I love it when the first half of the album ends and then we get the *slideCHUGGCHUGGCHUGG....CHUGCHUGCHUG...* and it's like "Oh fuck here we go shit got serious now" :metal
-
So heavy, so awesome, so good. :metal
:metal
-
this song alone sold me on seven string guitars. chug chug chug chug chug chug chug chug chug
I still own that rg1257 that i've had since I was 15 years old :lol
-
Great lyrics. My 2 favorite parts are the quiet breakdown in the middle ("let's stare the problem . . .") and the heavy ending.
-
The mirror is the best example of a proggy song based on a simple riff. One of my favorite songs ever!
-
What about the The Mirror riff on the Symphony X song "Death of Balance"? :P I think even MP pointed that out some years ago and that was mistaken for a feud between DT and SX
-

One of my favorite Dream Theater moment of all. Chills every time.

This, basically! Also, great lyrics, cool breakdown and nice keys.

It's one of my favorite moments as well.
And: "I spent so long trusting in YOOOOUUUU!!!" :metal

One of my favorite songs off my favorite album. Absolutely love everything about it. The vocals are amazing and the keys are chilling.

Almost the same, but my favourite part is "I trust you forgot" just after that. LaBrie absolutely smashes the final word, I used to replay that part over and over again
-
So heavy, so awesome, so good. :metal
-
Yeah I know when I look in a mirror I truly see something special...
..oh dammit you mean the song? Yeah that's awesome too, really unfairly ignored song. Probably my third favorite on Awake (my favorite DT album) behind Scarred and Voices.

The most requested DT song from my 7 and 5.5 year old sons. I leave the AWAKE CD in my car for that reason alone.
I love the song as well...but I love AWAKE period
-
I'm digging all of these appreciation threads lately, considering that there's at least one thing that I like in every DT song. :tup
But anyway, The Mirror rocks. :metal
I really like the accompanying keyboard parts by KM. James does a pretty good job on this one as well. It's also one of the few DT songs to not contain a guitar solo, but it doesn't suffer at all due to that fact.
-
What about the The Mirror riff on the Symphony X song "Death of Balance"? :P I think even MP pointed that out some years ago and that was mistaken for a feud between DT and SX
I always thought that Mirror riff at the beginning was fairly similar to the beginning of Metallica's Don't Tread on Me, which is supposedly similar to a song Pantera or Slayer or some other metal band did in the late 80s (cannot remember). Either way, it is awesome. :metal

The similarity on the sx song is on the riff (which is pretty much the same) and even the rythm and accent changes. And there was a brazilian band that paid homage to both the mirror and tom sawyer on one of their songs
-
Just such a crushing riff, complimented by Kevin's light keyboard work. Also features some of my favorite harsh vocals ever, courtesy of Mr. LaBrie. If he'd never had the accident MP wouldn't have ever needed to sing as much as he did. There are so many great vocal moments in this song that prove that, especially pre-accident, James certainly was a heavy metal singer. "Trusting in YOOOOOOUUUUUUUU!"
-
One of my favorite songs ever. Period. 10/10.
-
If he'd never had the accident MP wouldn't have ever needed to sing as much as he did.
I'd argue that despite James' vocal injury, MP didn't need to sing as much as he did.
-
Yeah, what's not to love about this song? :2metal:
-
I was shocked when I originally discovered that some people didn't love this song.
I had been a fan of the Puppies on Acid riff ever since I bought the LiT home video when it first came out. And I thought the downtuning made it EVEN BETTER!!
This is my favorite song from Awake, and probably in the top 5 all time. (though I havn't thought about it in a long time)
-
I'd argue that despite James' vocal injury, MP didn't need to sing as much as he did.
To be honest, I enjoy MP's vocal contributions, but there is NOTHING like an operatic singer singing with an edge. Which is what makes this song so great.
-
It's an awesome song :metal Definitely my favorite on Awake.

My second favourite from Awake, JLB's performance here is just mindblowing. My favourite part is probably the "mellow" section in the middle.
-
Awesome, my only critique to that song is that you have to hear Lie to get to the reprise. I'd kill to see it live in the next tour including Lie-outro.
-
Kick-ass song (Kevin Moore, ladies and gentleman).
-

THIS...
I actually created a seamless, flawless mix of The Mirror that duplicates (hmmm...reflects?) the arrangement from LSFNY. I use it for mix CD's...but I'm seriously thinking about just making a home version of Awake that just uses that version of The Mirror and deletes Lie altogether.
-
note to self: another one I need to listen to on the way home...
please, what does "puppies on acid" mean??? :blush
-

"Puppies on Acid" was the working title of that main riff you hear in The Mirror. During the Images and Words tour, it was often used as an extended intro to "Take the Time". You can see it on the Live in Tokyo home video. (or, on the usual sites that rhyme with BlueLube.. )
-
DT names their RIFFS???? Not only songs, but riffs???? Amazing. :o
Okay -- I'll listen carefully.
On my way now! :)
-
It's on the Once In A Livetime album too.

. . . and wasn't the working title for Lie, kittens on crack?
-
It was called Puppies On Acid because that's what the guitar melody sounded like? "Puppies on aaaacid, what a funny sight?" (after the intro before the first verse)
-
Listened to them both (Lies, too).
Very nice. This is what I mean about my listening habits being a song at a time, rather than entire albums. I hear of a tune and go listen. Is it better to hear the entirety? Maybe. But picking and choosing works, too! :)
-
Its one song I hope they play again. It'd be a good crowd interaction song, and maybe JP can do MPs parts. JLB would just rip it up now as his voice is more pristine then on LSFNY.
-
DT names their RIFFS???? Not only songs, but riffs???? Amazing. :o
They do if the riff is all they have. It wasn't a real song, only a piece of a song, but they wanted to play it live, so they had to call it something.
Likewise, there was an underdeveloped instrumental version of Raise The Knife that was performed several times. Back then it was known as Showdown.
-
Ah. Got it! :)
-
DT may also give (working) titles to some riffs/sections based on what band they sound like, a good example being "the Meshuggah riff" in The Dance of Eternity. Some sections also get other kinds of nicknames, like the "tickle section" in Lost Not Forgotten.
-
Is it in drop D?
-
Is it in drop D?
Naw, it's in "dirty D"....(James Brown - Funky Good Time)...
okay, i'm out... :-[
-
Is it in drop D?
Which song? The Mirror is played on a 7-string in standard tuning, Lost Not Forgotten is a 6-string song in D tuning (1 step down).
-
Lost Not Forgotten is a 6-string song in D tuning (1 step down).
LNF is in C I believe.

Guitar-wise, it’s the one song where I tune down to D. I thought it would sound heavier that way. And it does – I think the song kicks some serious ass!
-
All right. Although I'm confused, I always thought it was in C
-
The chugging riffs are in D minor and you can't hear any low C's, so I would've guessed the tuning right even if JP had never revealed it ;D
-
Okay, I listened to it again, and yes, they are Ds. Sorry :D
-
Yea LNF is in D. It's the only song on the album that uses an alternate tuning, as opposed to Black Clouds and 8vm which used alt tunings on most songs.
The Mirror is in B and was just played up an octave by JP before he got the 7 string.

OTBOA: E
BMUBMD: B
LNF: D
TITL: don't know, probably E
BITS: B
Outcry: B
FFH: not sure right now if it contains guitar parts at all
BAI: E
BTS: E
Quite a bit of alternate tunings here.
-
F...ing kick-ass look by all of them:

I'm not sure what you mean. Everything (except LNF) uses standard tuning. E-A-D-G-B-E. BITS, BMUBMD, and Outcry are played on 7 string guitars, but those are using standard tunings as well.
By alternate tuning, I mean like on ANTR how the guitars are tuned down 3 whole steps.

You mean 2? It's in C, not in A# ;)

Sorry, misunderstanding. I thought you were talking about tunings different from EADGBE in general (which includes BEADGBE).

No CFBbEbGC :neverusethis:
-
If you are thinking C tuning, remember TOT, they tuned to C because of St Anger if I'm not mistaken. AIA, HTF and ITNOG are all in C. ES is in D, SOC is Eb and TDS is B. Not sure about Vacant.
So yeah, DT are pretty creative with their songwriting and tunings and keys.
Anyway, back on topic, I was listening to Awake in the car today and I forgot how amazing the Mirror was. The repirse is amazing and I might try and make a mix of it too. Amazing song.
Does anyone actually know why they reprised it in Lie? Apologies if it's a n00bish question.
-
Lie came about from an instrumental section in the end of the original Mirror demo. Someone (I think James) pointed out the fact that that riff (the main riff in Lie) would make a great stand alone song. So the they changed it around a tad, Kev through some lyrics at it, and BLAM... Lie.
-
So worth bumping.
:metal :metal
-
Still a top 5 DT song.
-
Fantastically awesome.
-
DONT TELL ME
THIS THE WRONG SONG
DONT TELL ME
BECAUSE I KNOW

When I first heard The Mirror I thought they ripped off Metallica's Don't Tread on Me. It kind of bothered me for a while. Awesome song. Both of them actually.
-
Probably my favorite song off of Awake (which is btw my favorite DT album).

I love The Mirror, the contrast of the acoustic/clean bridge to the rest of the song is excellent writing :tup :metal

Yeah shit yeah, love this. Love the meter/feel changes during the intro... does amazing things to how ears perceive the chug.
-
Probably my favorite song off of Awake (which is btw my favorite DT album).
B.Lee
It IS my favorite song from Awake...not even close.
However, it does go directly into my least favorite song from Awake. (still can't figure out why they chose it as a lead off single)
I actually used Audacity to do a mix of The Mirror that cuts out Lie. The transition is *exactly* like the way they played it on Live Scenes From New York, and it sounds PERFECT. I use that mix every time I want to put The Mirror on a mix CD.
-
I love the couple of The Mirror/Lie actually. 'The Mirror' is a bit better, but the reprise of 'The Mirror' in Lie is just awesome, and the JP solo there is exceptional.
But yeah.. The Mirror. Still THE heaviest song ever by DT I think. You just can't beat THAT riff. It's one chord, but the groove is monstrous.
-
DJUN DJUN DJUN DJUN DJUN DJUN DJUN DJUN DJUN DJUN DJUN DJUN
I had this thing stuck in my brain like 3 hours afeter the show ended.

mix CD.
This is still a thing?

This is still a thing?
Yes, for us oldtimers.

I tried that once, but the transition was awkward since the drop-off in heaviness from the moment The Mirror ends to the Mirror reprise is too severe; it just didn't sound like a natural transition, dynamically speaking.
-
Not if you start it right at the Puppies on Acid Reprise...then it doesn't drop off any more than it does in Lie.
