Guys,
I was casually listening to FII the other day when Peruvian Skies popped up. I stopped and listened, and man, I don't know why I never gave this song more credit. It's absolutely amazing. It has these beautiful Floyd-inspired sections, and then these heavy balls-to-the-wall metal sections that just make you move. I dig it.
That is all. Go about your day.
I like Peruvian Skies a lot. The intro has a really cool, almost Western feel to it, which I really dig.
Great song, as already mentioned the Floydian touch in the first half is great. And I especially like the riffing section after the guitar solo. That just plain rocks :metal
Oh and Derek plays one of the best sounding hammond organs in the bridge.
Incredibly underrated.
Amazing song, one of my favourites. The solo is a thing of beauty, despite being so simple.

So many great songs on FII. I love PS, the build up to the solo and the solos are fantastic. It's really emotional and I love the lyrics.

I always loved Derek's Hammond playing, even the more subtle parts, like during the bridge in Trial of Tears (Not within his eyes to see). One of the biggest selling points of OIALT is his Hammond sound, it really enhances some of the songs (Metropolis, before and during the bass solo for instance). This is a field where he really outshines Rudess, using a real Leslie speaker really made Derek's Hammond sound more organic (pun intended). Seeing him haul a B3 all around with PSMS leaves me wondering how DT would look and sound if they had never replaced him with Jordan (which was a good decision, but I'm still curious).
Nothing beats a real Hammond with rotating Leslie speakers. And that's one of the things that Jordan doesn't match despite having a dirty organ (as mentioned in the SC documentary).
Peruvian Skies is fucking amazing. That's all :)
It's too underrated, just like everything else on Falling into Infinity
I agree, the build up before the solo, and the solo is amazing and beautiful.
Great song. Killer solo.

I agree, although at least LITS and ToT do get the credit they deserve.
A personal favourite- as good as anything on FII.
Fan-fuckin-tastic! :2metal:
One of their better crafted ones, the way it develops is truly stunning. I love every moment of it.
Also, a reminder of this terrific version:

One of my favourites on Infinity. I haven't seen it live (aside from a few clips) but I would guess it's great in a live setting.
Mladen: Yeah that is one of the best clips of it :metal
One of my top 4 songs on FII, it's a really good one.
Yeah, the High Voltage performance is probably the best one along with OIALT's. I am still fervently waiting for they to release the full concert for Ytse Jam!
Killer song. Up there among Dream Theater's best ever. :hat
A perfect fusion of Metallica and Pink Floyd.
My Fender Cyber Twin guitar amplifier actually had a setting called "Peruvian Skies" :hat
Whenever I think about this song now, I immediately think of the live High Voltage 2011 version of it. It's my favorite version of the song, studio or live. Such an awesome performance :tup
Yep, one of my favourites as well as one of the first DT songs I ever heard (it was the OIALT version, with the Have a Cigar and Enter sandman bits - which work great actually). Love to listen to it in a regular basis, and play it on the guitar too.
I have to admit, this song is one of my favourites, both DT and in general. I think FII has some of my favourite of their actual songwriting, even if I like some of their other albums more.

It's packed with excellent songs, most of them on my DT Top20. Peruvian Skies, Hollow Years, Hell's Kitchen/Lines in the Sand, Take Away my Pain, Trial of Tears... plus the awesome cover and sound. I really don't get all the hate around this jewel.

Didn't even need to click it to know exactly what version it was going to be! Killer performance.

A song so good, it needs TWO appreciation threads! :tup :lol
I'll chime in here and say that is IT one of the better songs off of FII, and in fact, from that whole time period from 96-98.

Most of the hate comes from most of the other songs on the album that you didn't mention.
Amazing song, and does everything just right. I especially like the bridge, the orgasmic JP solo with a great driving MP drumbeat, and then riff fest that follows. Even the way the chorus returns is awesome.
The first time I ever heard this song, I really liked it because of its amazing main riff, and strong melodic sense. But the more I listened to FII and the rest of DT's discography, the more I sort of forgot about it and just never cared much to listen to it. Until recently, when I was putting together my Top 10 Dream Theater Guitar Riffs (https://brolific.wordpress.com/2013/07/22/top-10-dream-theater-guitar-riffs/) list. (If you guys care to read.) And I just fell in love with this song all over again, and that makes me very happy.
By the way, can anyone clarify what the lyrics mean?
I LOVE that song. I love the solo, it's beautiful. And I also love the badass riffs right after the solo. It's my number one favorite song from FII alongside Trial of Tears, because I can't choose between those two. Hell, It's one of my all time favorite Dream Theater songs! :metal
Not one of my absolute favourites on FII, but a great song for sure!
One of my fav on FII. Loved the version on Once in a LIVEtime CD ;D
Love this song. And I'm also waiting for a full release of High Voltage, mainly because I was there. Great performance.
I LOVE it, definitely in my top 3 of the album. It has a very "One"-esque structure. In a :metal way, of course.
Seeing it live definitely made it click for me.
Ya know, I tend to overlook this song sometimes, but every time I listen to it, I think, "How is this not one of the band's best songs?" It's that good. :metal
The OIALT version ending is so awesome, even cooler than the original.
I love Peruvian Skies. I normally don't like when DT does some excerpts from covers in their own songs, but the 2005 version of Peruvian Skies (https://youtu.be/M81CHCBcwqs?t=35m5s) is killer.
The section with JP's solo followed by that heavy section after it is just incredible.
"Hey...it's gonna snow." -Geoff Tate
It was my favorite song on FII when it first came out, because I wasn't crazy about "Burning My Soul" when I heard it on the radio. Over the years, my opinions on many of the songs on that album have changed dramatically, although I still like "Peruvian Skies" and still hate "Anna Lee." "Trial of Tears" is probably my favorite now.
Top 5 DT song for me.
