I have scrobbled 999 artists to my last.fm profile. Who should get the honor of 1000? No Schpongle, that I can guarantee.
-
Dream Theatre.
-
Devil Doll. It will change your life. You've never heard anything like it.
-
Cardiacs
You'll either absolutely love them or absolutely hate them.
-
What's Schpongle, by the way?
-
The Enid
-
Dream Theatre.
Their drummer is pretty good. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjx3USc5cSs)

KrotchRaut

KrotchRaut
Gotta agree with this.
-
What's Schpongle, by the way?
I dunno... maybe I spelled it wrong. I'm remembering lonestar's first roulette, and Sigz gave it to him. Given his "review" of it, and my similarity in tastes to RJ, I'm quite certain I'd detest it.

No, I've just never them, but I've seen them mentioned around here. So I was curious. :)

Yeah, but there's also a lot of crap music mentioned here on a regular basis, too. I mean, look at how long any given thread about Steven Wilson is, for example.

Dude.... I
... ... Dude!
!!!!!!
:(

:lol
Have you added Genius yet? Or Explorer's Club?
-
Explorer's Club. Interesting. Haven't listened to those guys in a LONG time

I found one of their albums at Goodwill and bought it on a whim. Got to say, it was pretty good. Very psychedelic and drug-influenced, but I liked it.

Right... and the three "nominations" of Krotchraut is what exactly? I youtube'd them and ... my ears!!!!

Yes, and yes. Purchased Genius. Explorer's Club will need a another Grooveshark listen or two before I decide if I want to outright buy them.
-
Devil Doll. It will change your life. You've never heard anything like it.
Can only agree. It changed mine. Mr. Doctor is a genius.

Aha! That makes at least two of us. I think there's someone else around here as well...

There was a remastered box set done by some Japanese company in 2008. If you're lucky, you can find on Ebay. I got mine several months ago for ~$300.

There's one up right now for $340. I'd get it if I could afford it.

Jolly- The Audio Guide to Happiness Part 1
'Part 2' was on progstreaming a couple months back. If I recall correctly, I tried it and was kinda 'meh' about it.

some generic, cheesy and run of the mill progressive metal maybe?

You know my tastes all too well.
-
Have you heard of Anthriel? Typical prog metal, but it's done very well.
-
Anthriel is good. You might hear some Symphony X and Dream Theater in their music.
When I say might, I mean you definitely will. You know how present Dream Theater's influences on Octavarium were?

I wish I could have the vinyls and I wish I could have seen him live.. I would have given anything.

Well, the box set is just CDs. I don't know if any vinyls even exist.
Yeah, it would have been something to see him live. I read an interview a while back where he said he still writes and records Devil Doll music, he's just not interested in selling it anymore.

If you're referring to Free Fall, it's already in there dude. It's gonna be a serious contender for AOTY.
Lay something else on me.

Yes, vinyls existed. They were distributed amongst the audience and some of his lyrics were written with his own blood. He burned the remaining vinyls.
-
Hmm, I had heard that. He's an odd guy, for sure.
-
You seem to like the power metal, but you don't listen to Thunderstone. Go and pick up The Burning. :metal
-
You mean Thundersword? :neverusethis:
-
Ok... I narrowed it down to the serious suggestions of Devil Doll, Jolly, Kick Axe, Anthriel and Thunderstone. Did a quick preview of each on YT
Devil Doll ... cool and funky. Nothing wrong with it, but not something I would normally gravitate to.
Jolly ... damn King, it's hit and miss between our tastes. This unfortunately missed.
Kick Axe ... maybe another time. Maybe if it was 25 years ago. Again, it's my cup of tea, but maybe I just didn't find the right song. Throw me a suggestion.
Thuderstone ... definitely dug it, but there wasn't anything overly unique about what I heard. Again, throw me a specific suggestion, and I'm all over it.
The honors go to Anthriel. Like Thunderstone, it wasn't entirely unique, and I don't see them vaulting to the top of my prog-metal listening habits, but this was the most enjoyable of the group. Thanks to Zook and Shadow Ninja.
-
Devil Doll cool and funky? There are two Devil Dolls, I think you found the wrong one :lol The real one is totally bizarre.
Glad you liked Anthriel.
-
If you're going with Anthriel, I'd suggest "The Pathway" it's a damned fine album.
-
This was the first hit on YT for "Devil Doll"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLrKdPOyva4
Nice and jazzy.
Think I may have found what you were really suggesting - "The Sacrilege of Fatal Arms"??

Oh yeah baby. It's playing at this moment.
-
Think I may have found what you were really suggesting - "The Sacrilege of Fatal Arms"??
Yeah, that's the one. Although I'd start with either Mr. Doctor or The Girl Who Was... Death.

Out of curiosity, is there another album? I looked a while ago, but couldn't find anything.

I just listen to it for laughs. :rollin :rollin :rollin :rollin

Not that I am aware of.

Didn't know where else to post this. I could have made a new thread, but I feel like I've made too many threads for bands nobody listens to already. :lol
Hi everybody! A long time since I posted a new update about our second album recordings so I thought it's high time to tell something about it. Due to some unfortunate things we have been forced to postpone the final recordings of the album for some time now. But worry not, the album is almost ready and it will be released as soon as possible! - Simo, Anthriel

Ok DTF... need your help/recommendations again. When I was approaching my 1000th artist (according to my last.fm profile), I sought recommendations as to who that artist should be. I ended up going with Zook's recommendation of Anthriel, and he knocked it out of the park - absolutely love their debut album.
Well, just 3.5 years later, I'm now approaching my 2000th artist.
So, what say you DTF... who should I go with?
-
Is Gunship in there yet?
More seriously, I might actually have something for you. Edenbridge, album MyEarthDream.
Edit: They're in there but not that album. I'll see if I can dig something else up tomorrow..
-
You should go with a link to your last.fm, so we can see who your artists are.

DAN (Hef gets an assist on this one)- https://danofficial.bandcamp.com/track/landmines (https://danofficial.bandcamp.com/track/landmines)
Anciients (contains growls, but maybe try not being such a pussy about it)- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuM_-pE2g8E (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuM_-pE2g8E)
Arkean (shameless plug for my buddy's band) - https://arkaen.bandcamp.com/releases (https://arkaen.bandcamp.com/releases)
Until Rain (you probably got them already, but it's just how you like em) - https://untilrain.bandcamp.com/track/think-again (https://untilrain.bandcamp.com/track/think-again)
-
You've probably already heard it but Lonely Robot would be right up your alley, it's a band by John Mitchell.
-
You should go with a link to your last.fm, so we can see who your artists are.
Ask and ye shall receive - https://www.last.fm/user/jingle-boy/library/artists
Will investigate DAN (noticed that on your and Hef's FB feed yesterday) and Arkean.
Ancients - tried already (from your posting)
Until Rain - got 'em all. This years release was disappointing
Lonely Robot - this years release was better than the debut
Keep 'em coming.
-
I started going through that list but since there doesn't seem to be a way to order that alphabetically I'll keep suggesting without checking. Have you listened to Sound of Contact? They have only 1 record so far but it's a good one
-
Chad you every try A.C.T.? If not try their album Circus Pandemonium.
Edge Of Reality -- Vicious Circle.
Did you Like the instrumental band we saw -- The Fierce And The Dead?
I Am The Manic Whale -- Everything Beautiful In Time.
-
Leatherwolf
-
Wow, how does one keep that many artists straight?

Yup... I've got a couple of their songs on a sampler CD. Pale Blue Dot is a great song.

A.C.T. - Yup... totally dig them/that album - I think thanks to ProgSnob.
The Fierce and the Dead - I skipped them, so don't know about them. And from the way you described them, I'm not sure they'd be my cuppa tea.
I'll investigate the other two.
Leatherwolf
You gave Thunder to me in my 2nd Roulette.
Wow, how does one keep that many artists straight?
Well, I only have 942 artists in my iTunes library ... the other thousand are just ones that I've sampled or played on Spotify over the past 6 years (I only started scrobbling in 2011)

My favorite from them.

I was going to investigate, but when last.fm lists the very first genre as "post-rock", I'm reminded of how I kicked off my first roulette.... "don't expect to get much love from death metal, electronica or any genre requiring "post" or "core" in its name" :lol
still will investigate
-
You going to post your thoughts after you try those albums out?
-
Are you familiar with Krokus? If not try "Screaming in the Night" or "Night Wolf"

Weather Systems is so heavily influenced by post-rock I sometimes recommend post-metal-lite bands to people who like Anathema :corn

The only thing I know of them is their Ballroom Blitz cover.

If you scrobbled 2000 artists on your own, without a need for a recommendation, why do you need one now? It is just a number anyway. I'd say keep doing what you did.
-
It's a fun way to get recommendations. Something you might not find out there.

Actually, MANY of those 1,987 (ooohhh... nugget!) came from recommendations from someone - a metric shit ton from DTF'rs. Sometimes I like to get advice from friends. Guess that seems strange to some.
:dunno:

There is no place like DTF. I'm thankful everyday for it.
When it comes to discovering music, I think it's a great place to be. Everyone that I generally consider my DTF friends, and even those who aren't have each turned me on to something along the way.

I know right? Stuff like this (https://youtu.be/GlN3oEjMpUQ?t=50) is the reason I have the quote that I do in my signature

I'm interested in Chad's pic.

No, I've just never them, but I've seen them mentioned around here. So I was curious. :)
Yeah but then you accidentally the whole thing you dumbfuck
-
So I'm new here (posted in the beginning of the year but then mostly stayed away to avoid the "beyond" spoilers from the I&W tour), but this thread looked interesting so I checked it out. Could it be that you have never scrobbled Katatonia? I would highly recommend them as your 2000th artist. I would go with the latest album, The Fall of Hearts, just because they have such a large discography that it might be better to jump in with where they are now and then if you like them, work backwards. It's also arguably the proggiest. On the other hand, The Fall of Hearts perhaps requires more time to get into than some of their more immediate stuff, so I could point you to some popular tracks instead - Forsaker, July, My Twin, Lethean, Leaders, Evidence, Buildings, Criminals, Day and Then the Shade, Soil's Song, etc.
-
I've sampled some Katatonia over the years, and what I did hear/listen to just didn't float my boat. I could try to revisit.
-

Yeah, do that, don't get distracted by the post whatever you might find there because this doesn't sound like the post-rock post- metal that I've listened to.
-
Since Train of Naught isn't in this thread, I will recommend this band instead.
Chad, try the band called Artificial Language. They released their debut album this year, and Train recommended it to me, and I've been listening to it for five days like non-stop.
Artificial Language - The Observer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcL5EFvTJ6Q&list=PLvrMAOHuxVfumLRGSNZxMOEIYHz3pHbTU)
Give the first three tracks (the very first one is a brief intro) a try, it'll give you a pretty good picture of the album and if it's up your alley or not. The album itself is quite short, it's like 40 minutes long.
-
another band to consider is Kobra and the Lotus. They have a new album out titled Prevail I. I've really liked what I've heard.
bonus points because they are Canadian.
-
And it doesn't hurt that Paige is smokin hawt. I've listened to the singles that came out just ahead of the album, and liked them well enough ... just some oooomph missing from Paige's delivery.
