Alright, I've been noticing this recently that most people prefer one over the other, and that by a considerate margin, so I thought: what better avenue than a poll to determine which song the fanbase favours?
Personally, I'm going with ACOS - easy choice. Another World is probably my favourite DT section, whereas Octavarium starts out decent and then just descends into mediocrity during Full Circle, reaches a pretty good climax with Intervals, only to have it dragged out with the absolute bore that is Razor's Edge, which I consider to be the most overrated Dream Theater section ever.
Which song do you prefer and why?
-
Octavarium is just magical. The entire enviroment during the song is just epic!
-
Octavarium has a much better production, but ACOS is just classic.
-
ACOS
Great music, great lyrics and it is very melody driven. No noodling nonsense like 8V
-
Octavarium is just magical. The entire enviroment during the song is just epic!
This. I really like ACOS, but to me it's nothing more than a great song, whereas Octavarium is an incredible experience.
-
Making me choose between my #1 Dream Theater song and my #2 Dream Theater song... so Octavarium, by so little, I almost feel bad for A Change of Seasons to actually make this choice.
-
ACOS, but it's a very close call.
-
Damn this is a tough one, I went for ACOS mainly just for the "......goodbye.." and "(whipering) Carpe diem... seize the daaaaaayyyyy" so good, but it was a close call.
-

-
Octavarium, although I feel that both are overrated.
-
Octavarium, but very close. They're my #1 and #2 favourite DT songs :)
-
Octavarium is the greatest piece of music ever written.
Easy choice.
-
Octavarium is the greatest piece of music ever written.
:tup
-
Octavarium. It encompasses everything I love about DT.
-
I do prefer one over the other, but it's not by a large margin. Voted for A Change Of Seasons, but Octavarium is something special as well. Both incredible songs, both near the very top of DT's catalogue.
-
Octavarium, but both are in my top 10.
-
A Change of Seasons is my favourite song by any artist ever. It has a raw emotion to it that 8V doesn't. Don't get me wrong, 8V is very good, but it feels more like five different songs stuck together, whereas ACOS is much more cohesive.
-
A Change of seasons is my favourite DT song it is a beautiful masterpiece :-)
-
Octavarium, but just barely. Both are top 5 material.
-
Octavarium, because it reflects the classic prog I grew up listening to and loved my whole life.
-
I say Octavarium, but here's how it is. The best parts of ACOS are way better than the best parts of 8V. But 8V is really really good all throughout, and is more consistent that way, whereas there are some parts of ACOS where I could take it or leave it.
-
ACOS, but it's a very close call.
If I could only listen to one of the two for the rest of my life, it would be ACoS.
-
8VM
-
ACOS mostly because I liked it first. 8VM is still a great song.
-
Octavarium is the greatest piece of music ever written.
Easy choice.
-
ACOS is 75% bore.
Octavarium is 100% win.
-
Easily ACOS, although 8VM is still a great song.
-
Wow, I did not expect 8V to be the winner thus far. While I know people enjoy both, I always thought ACOS was *the* 20+ minute epic still.
whereas Octavarium starts out decent and then just descends into mediocrity during Full Circle
Absolutely this. Full Circle is fun, but it kills the song for me. It would have been better as a different song.
Where as I cannot find anything wrong with ACOS. I really like the first two sections, and the heavy riff after JP's blues improv is great, with it being a great transition into the first heavy riff reprise leading into the end. The ending vocal melody is one of LaBrie's finest moments.
And the lyrics; MP's best IMO are ACoS. 8V lyrics, especially Full Circle... :lol
-
Octavarium :metal
-
ACoS. Octavarium would probably crack my top 20.
-J
-
If it weren't for Full Circle I would choose 8V but alas I went for ACOS
-
Man, I like Full Circle.
-
A Change of Seasons has better lyrics in my opinion. It also has a more consistent tone, and Octavarium's all-too-obvious influences can be a bit distracting for me.
It's still a great song, and it was once my favorite Dream Theater song, but I think ACoS handily wins here.
-
Octavarium... I never liked ACOS.
-
A Change of Seasons, but it's close, definitely.
-
Man, I like Full Circle.
Full circle had to grow on me, but now I freakin' love it.
-
Octavarium.
-
No question for me. Octavarium.
While there are some dud lyrical sections, musically the song is just so damn beautiful from start to finish, and it gives me chills.
ACOS is a consistently good song, and there's nothing I dislike about it at all, but it just doesn't do much for me, and it wouldn't make my top 50.

It would only just be out of my top 50. Again, it's not because there's anything at all I dislike about it, as I used to listen to it as much as anything else, there are just 50 DT songs I prefer. ACOS is more consistent than many of those top 50, but it doesn't reach the heights that they do imo.
-
ACOS easily.

Seasons
-
ACOS. Octavarium has many parts I don't care of. Intro and Intervals are amazing though.
Everything in ACOS is amazing.
23 minutes of awesome > 5 minutes of awesome.
Easy :hat.
-
ACOS easily.
This - better flow, better melodies, better lyrics, more emotion and no aimless noodling. Another World is one of my favorite moments in music ever :hefdaddy

Worked out my top fifty a while back. Not the order - what's the difference between an eighteen and a nineteen? Nothing that wouldn't change from day to day anyway. Just got a big list of all the band's songs and picked off whatever I could bear to lose one by one until there were only fifty left.
A Change of Seasons came, quite dramatically, fifty-first. So, yes, exactly where you are. Doesn't quite hit my top fifty - not because I don't like it, but because I like Dream Theater so much that there are fifty songs I like even more than it.
-
ACOS for me. I don't really know why, but I hess it has to do with the lack of cohesion that decreases my enjoyment of 8V a bit.
-
ACOS. not contest at all.
-
ACOS. It's probably my ultimate all time favorite song. Everything is great, I especially like how James delivers emotions in ACOS. Also, I like the message :hefdaddy
I'm sick of all you hypocrites
holding me at bay
And I don't need your sympathy
to get me through the day
Seasons change and so can I
Hold on boy, No time to cry
Untie these strings, I'm climbing down
I won't let them push me away
-
Looks like the contest is closer than I expected. I believed that ACOS had a slight but significant edge on the other one.
-
Definitely we can say that we are facing the 2 greatest epic DT songs ever, and that just make me happy! :metal
-
Wow, we have a tie with 108 votes!
-
I don't know if this has been mentioned in this thread or not, but I recall someone once stating it like this:
ACOS is DT's Prog-metal masterpiece.
8vm is DT's Progressive masterpiece.
My vote went to 8vm, by a hair.
-
ACoS, easily. Octavarium loses a lot of points for it's way-too-long intro and lack of lyrical cohesion.
-
A Change of Seasons, although 8VM is awesome. PS: First time my vote to a poll turns out to be the deciding one. Well, at least at this moment xD (ACOS: 57; 8VM: 56)
-
Octavarium. 100%
It's just flawless to me.
-
Wow 57 votes each.
Can we get one more vote for each and then it'll be perfect. ;D
-

SO MUCH THIS!
And then, lock the damn thread!
-
wow i was reply #58 hahahha... im gonna cry.
-
Please someone vote for Octavarium then NOBODY ELSE VOTE EVER AGAIN :omg:
-

Unless we go to 85 each.
-
Aw - A Change of Seasons ruined it. :(
-
Aw - A Change of Seasons ruined it. :(
Damn you, Change of Seasons!!! That's why Octavarium is better!
-
Damn it. We were so close to the 58 / 58
-
Easily ACOS, although 8VM is still a great song.
This.
-
The concept of the song 8v (and the album) is cool, but my vote is for ACoS. Lyrically, there's much more to it, and it doesn't have all the obvious influences showing thru so clearly as 8v does (the Pink Floyd intro, the Yes section, etc.). And I enjoy ACoS far more than 8v, tho 8v is a good, tho overrated song, IMO.
-

:iagree:
-
A Change of Seasons
-
I havn't even voted because it's like asking me to chose between my #1 and #2 DT songs....and I'm not even sure which is which.
Today it's ACOS, but tomorrow it could be 8V.
-
Besides the fact that I think Ocatavarium is a more enjoyable listen, it doesn't help that A Change of Seasons is a stand-alone composition, with no album to be a part of. ACOS is still kick-ass, but I never got into it like I did 8vm. In fact, ACOS did nothing for me until years after being into DT. I also used to hate Portnoy's snare sound on ACOS. Octavarium is just beautiful all the way through.

I do believe this thread specifically refers to title tracks, and not to the CDs themselves. But I guess your vote wouldn't change regardless.

Exactly. I did not know one's opinion of a song can be influenced by its surrounding songs, but I guess so. :-[
-
I think he was voting for the songs on a song-by-song basis, and just mentioned Octavarium's role in the album because Intervals is even better with the seven songs preceding it?
-
I voted Octavarium because I like the song Octavarium and also the album Octavarium.
-

Sort of. I wasn't rating the tunes based on the rest of the albums they're on, but ACOS is alone on the EP, nothing to contrast it with, if you know what I mean. 8vm has the lead up to the title track, and then the big ka-boom that is Octavarium. But nonetheless, 8vm still wins for me. I have more emotional attachment to it.
-
ACOS is clearly in the lead now! :tup
-
Here is a different angle.
I don't choose if I only listen them musically (including vocals). They are both epic and classic. Lyrics-wise, ACOS takes the cake. It has deep meaning and touching. I really love the story and it's like every note just screams the words. So it's just an "another world" to me.
-
A Change of Seasons.
The only thing that separates the two for me is the beginning of Octavarium. It takes a while to get going, whereas ACOS is underway pretty much from 0:00. Otherwise, Octavarium is right up there, at no. 2 after ACOS.

While the lyrics are more meaningful in terms of subject matter, a few of them in ACOS seem a little amateurish. A lot of them are great, it's not as bad as The Best of Times, but still, I find that Octavarium lyrics are much tighter and better put together.

I usually, hate long, drawn out intros. I find they diminish songs like Trial of Tears, The Great Debate, etc. But for Octavarium, it's just the opposite, I freakin' love that intro.
-
ACOS by far. I don't really like much about Octavarium, but I love ACOS start to finish.
-
Glad to see that ACOS is winning. :2metal:
-
ACOS....by a lightyear... :yarr
-
Should have had 'None of the above', or something. I really don't care for either one.
-
Same as CrimsonSunrise!! :tup
And I'm REALLY surprised that there is so little difference between the two songs in this poll... :yeahright
-
ACOS....by a lightyear... :yarr
I wish I could find the post ScurvyDreams made on this topic . . . it beautifully encapsulated why A Change of Seasons is so great and why Octavarium pales in comparison. Not that OV is bad by any means.
-
ITT: 90 voters that are WRONG.

???
Octavarium only has 74 votes right now. You're doing it wrong.
-

YDIW!
-
Octavarium feels more cohesive, but A Change of Seasons has a certain character a about it that gives it the edge for me.
-
I usually, hate long, drawn out intros. I find they diminish songs like Trial of Tears, The Great Debate, etc.
The Great Debate is a brilliant intro. It builds up tension, whereas Octavarium and Trial of Tears just seem to be stuck in a lull for a few minutes.
-
Trial of Tears is completely amazing and every second of it is fucking great.
-
I've always wondered if Octavarium was released as an EP would it be higher in the DT ranking world if it wasn't associated with it's album? More I heat is bad album, great tune.
-
Octavarium only has 74 votes right now. You're doing it wrong.
YDIW!
There is no right or wrong really. Only a matter of degree. I would say most of those who voted for ACOS still like 8VM a lot and vise versa. They are both great songs. The only difference is which one speaks to you the most.
-
I have to vote for 8vm
it's my favorite DT song
what's funny is that when the album was released in 2005, I did not like the song at all but after seeing it live at Radio City Music Hall I was instantly sold and the rest is history
-
Surprisingly, Octavarium was the first DT song I EVER listened to. So yeah, it's stuck to me, my favorite album, first bought, etc.
