Title: DoC's Top 50 Favorite Dream Theater songs, like ever!
Post by: Destiny Of Chaos on March 09, 2013, 06:45:39 AM
Hello everyone. I will now be starting my top 50 DT countdown. You may know me as the user who is running the DT League over in the Polls & Survivors forum. Since I run the league, I typically don’t share my thoughts on which songs win and lose, or more to the point, which songs I like more than others. Believe me, there have been plenty of times where one of my favorite songs lost to a song that I don’t like nearly as much and I felt like going all WTF like some of you do. So sharing this list will serve as a means to finally share my thoughts and opinions on the fantastic music that this amazing band has crafted during their lengthy and legendary career.

Growing up, my favorite genre was heavy metal. My favorite bands were the usual suspects like Metallica and Ozzy. In 1995, I heard Pull Me Under on the Radio. But it wasn’t until the 1997 that I truly got into the band.  My step dad played bass guitar. He joined a band, and they sent him home with two cassette tapes. One was a copy of Images & Words, the other, a copy of Awake.  I pretty much took those tapes from him, because the music absolutely blew me away. Plus, he was never going to come close to replicating John Myung anyway.

So eventually, I got Images & Words and Awake on CD. I went to a CD Store (Remember those) and purchased Falling Into Infinity. A few months later, my older brother got me A Change of Seasons & When Dream and Day Unite. I even ended up with 5 Years in a Livetime on VHS. But I was able to get each album, beginning with Scenes from a Memory in order of when they were released. I couldn’t get Train of Thought when it first came out because I was in boot camp. When I was leaving boot camp to fly to my next destination, the airport had a CD store, and sure enough, Train of Thought was in stock. So I bought the CD and a portable CD player so I could hear it on the flight. Perfect timing, them coming out with an album like that after I came out of boot camp all kinds of angry.

As of now, my favorite bands (other than Dream Theater) are Shadow Gallery, Symphony X, Kamelot, Nightwish, Epica, Redemption, Iced Earth, Opeth , Circus Maximus, Royal Hunt & Sonata Arctica.

I had fun crafting this list. It was a very slow, but simple method that I implemented. You may agree with some of my choices. You may be offended with some of them. But I make no apologies. DT is the greatest band that I’ve ever heard, and all of their music is great. These are just my personal favorites.

Now, let’s get right to it. The first five songs on my list are as follows:

50. This is the Life

Coming in at #50 is a song from 2011’s A Dramatic Turn of Events. After opening with three rockers, this ballad-esque really is a great choice for the four hole. The less is more approach that went into making this song really pays off.  It is a deceptive 6:57, feeling much shorter.   I love the lyrics, and have my own views as to what they really mean.  I’m really glad that I got to see this one performed live. As always, Pertucci’s solo was incredible.

49, Burning My Soul

Next up is a song that is probably one of my guilty pleasures. I remember back in 1997 when this song was getting a bit of play on my local rock station. I absolutely loved it. And in those days, I had no internet forum to tell me that it’s a bad song, and that longer songs are better. I love that damn bass in the intro. This has always been a fun song to sing along to. And that keyboard solo is my favorite Derek moment in DT history. Of course DT have written much better music and lyrics, but sometimes less is more, and I’ll always have a place in my heart for this rocker.

48. Space-Dye Vest

At #48 we have the Awake album ender. When I was being indoctrinated into Dream Theater, I had Images & Words in one hand, and Awake in the other. And this particular song was truly different from all of the others. But I loved it. The bizarre lyrics, the eerie piano, the samples and the epic ending. I remember  in 11th Grade, I broke up with a girlfriend that I had turned on to DT. I wrote her the lyrics to this song and had the “Never come near me again” line all bolded and big. That didn’t go over too well.

47. Stream of Consciousness

Stream of Consciousness, the epic instrumental from Train of Thought is next. When I read the track listing and saw this song title, I immediately thought of Lines in the Sand, as did many people I’m sure. This song is a rocker, which I find very hard to listen to without tapping my foot, or flat out air drumming out. Great runs, smooth transitions and genius back and forth between Pertucci and Rudess, it’s all you want out of a heavier DT instrumental.

46. A Rite of Passage

I was impatient, and indulged in this song when offered as a single ahead of the release of Black Clouds & Silver Linings. I’m certainly glad that I did. That riffing! That touchscreen solo! But most importantly, that chorus! I don’t care what anybody says, the chorus to A Rite of Passage is one of my absolute favorites. They knocked it out of the park. I love this song for what it is.

Stay tuned for updates!

Putting AROP above SDV is going to stir some controversy, stay assured  :lol

Aside from that, great GREAT premise post  :tup

Perhaps..... but that's child's play when compared to what's to come.

Aside from that, great GREAT premise post  :tup

Thank you. I think these lists work better when you've got a little background so people understand why you picked what you did.

Really? I'd easily put AROP well above SDV. I agree with DoC about AROP's chorus, it's just excellent. SDV is a borefest, and I love DT's mellow/ballad side more than most. And I'm amused by a story that results in SDV helping keep the chicks away. :P

Interesting mix so far! Nothing I'd rank noticeably higher, and only one that I'd rank substantially lower (I'm sure it's obvious which one :lol ).

Post by: ? on March 09, 2013, 07:07:38 AM
SDV is way too low and ranking AROP above it is blasphemy IMO - to quote myself:
AROP could've been a good metal single - I like the intro and the riffing during the verses, and the chorus is catchy. But of course they had to insert that totally unrelated generic instrumental section with the awful Bebot solo into the middle of the song just for the sake of making it longer... ::)
However, it's nice to see BMS on someone's list for once. It's not even close to being DT's worst song IMO and Derek's solo rules.

Really cool to see BMS and AROP! The chorus is AROP is absolutely fantastic indeed.

Yeah!  A Rite of Passage.  The only thing I don't like about it is it's like they gave up on trying to transition back from the instrumental to the last verse.  WTF is with that?  But other than that, it's a great song.

I'd easily put AROP well above SDV.

Every day, and TWICE on Sundays. :hifive:

GREAT start, DoC, and I loved the background you gave before you went into the list itself.

Thank you all for the comments.

45. Pull Me Under

My 45th favorite Dream Theater song is the first Dream Theater song that I ever heard. I think that sometimes, people underrate this song because they’re sick of seeing it on setlists and things like that.  It’s never been my favorite song, but I think that it is a fantastic album over, and a very good introduction to the band. LaBrie sounds great on the track. The riffage is chunky. The chorus is simple but effective. I’ll never forget the first time I ever listened to DT. I’ll always have a place in my heart for this song.

44. Strange déjà vu

What a great transition, from the end of Overture 1928, to the beginning of Strange déjà vu. I love the story telling aspect of this song. It delves into the story of the concept without really giving anyway away. To me, it’s kind of like the lyrical version of Overture 1928. Musically, this thing turns into quite a nice little rocker towards the middle. I absolutely love Rudess’ keys in this song.

43. The Great Debate

After listening to Home, some of my “Tool” fans were up in arms about the bass line. Well a year or so later, I was able to play for them “The Great Debate” and example of DT harnessing a particular bands sound and producing something better. I love the lyrics of this song, and how the different arguments are coming out of different parts of the mix. The music is eerie. It’s heavy as hell. A great choice for a long, chunky song to gobble up minutes between Misunderstood and Disappear.

42. As I Am

Up next is Train of Thought’s excellent album opener. Pertucci is a monster on this song. That damn solo, easily one of his best ever. This song does a great job in setting the tone for DT’s heaviest album. This is a great show opener as well. One time, I saw DT open with As I Am, and it was pouring rain and dark outside. Epic metal time.

41. Lines in the Sand

Lines in the Sand is a song that I do like, but nowhere near as much as the typical Dream Theater fan. Regardless, The lyrics are amazing at times. Musically, the opening is great, the versus is great, but the chorus is a complete dead end, and drags the entire song down a bit. I mean, it’s chorus is Blind Faith bad even without considering the horrible backup vocals provided by the Kings X guy. But, bad chorus aside, this is still a great song.

Great choices. I probably rank them mostly a bit higher, especially LITS and As I Am. :tup

And I have never understood the problem some people have with the background vocals in LITS. I think they're awesome. Something loose and improvised and just rockin'. I think the whole chorus is one of the strengths of the song imo.

But each to their own. :dunno:

YES!  I have never understood the hate for this song, and for Train of Thought in general.

I can completely see where you're coming from with the choruses for Blind Faith and LiTS. I hate both of them, for the same reason-- the have no flow, and no catchy factor. DT manages to pull off odd meters and make them catchy simultaneously, but in both cases I feel catchiness was sacrificed for quirkiness.

That being said, both are some of my favorite of DT, and I don't feel the choruses drag the songs down very much at all. LiTS is probably in my top ten.

40. The Best of Times

Up next is Mike Portnoy’s touching song for his father. I love the piano intro. I feel that it is one of DT’s best intros. My least favorite part of the song is when it speeds up, but I appreciate why they did it. From 6:10 on, the music is absolutely incredible.  Quite possibly the most underrated song on the most underrated album.

39. Overture 1928

Overture 1928….. what an awesome instrumental piece. I get goose bumps when I hear the Metropolis theme at the start of this song.  Every player is on point, the smooth keyboard solo was instant proof that Jordan was going to be a great fit for this band. Great way to preview the album, while transitioning from Regression to Strange Déjà vu.

38. Take the Time

This used to be one of my favorite songs, but it really hasn’t aged well to me. The intro is still awesome. The initial samples are still silly. The chorus is still epic. All in all, still a great song, but like I said, it hasn’t aged well for me.

37. The Root of All Evil
Talk about awesome intros. What a great way to open Octavarium, or even a concert. James sounds great on this song, as does everyone else. Absolutely love the story that the song is conveying. For me, these are the best lyrics that Mike wrote for the AA suite. Awesome chorus, great instrumental section, great song!

36. Caught in a Web

This little gem has always been a favorite of mine. Love the lyrics. The Kevin’s keyboards sounds phenomenal on this song, as they do for much of Awake. James sounds so damn aggressive singing the verses. Kind of an underrated song in my opinion. Would love to hear it live.

35. A Fortune in Lies

I love this song. This is such an uplifting, energetic  album opener, and I’m sure a great introduction to the band for anyone fortunate (or old) enough to discover this band on the ground floor. This song absolutely slays live.

34. Scarred

This song has been widely discussed on the majority of these lists.  I hate the intro, but once the song kicks in, it’s Dream Theater at its best. Every musician is on point. Great lyrics, but my favorite part about this song is that outro. I’m sure that I’m not alone in this regard.

33. This Dying Soul

I think that I like this song more than most. Then again, I think that I like Train of Thought more than most. In fact, this was the first Dream Theater album released in which I liked every song.  I love metal, and this song delivers. The first half of this song, by itself, would threaten to invade the top 20, but the back end of this song really drags it down, as do some of LaBries vocals. Of all of the songs that supposedly should end sooner, this one actually could stand to lose a few minutes. But all in all, heavy Dream Theater will always have my heart.

32. Hell’s Kitchen

Hell’s Kitchen… what can be said? Sandwiched lovingly between two great songs,  I love the atmosphere and constant build that this song brings. I have heard Lines in the Sand performed twice live. I only wish that this gem would have preceded the epic as it does in the album.

31. The Killing Hand

Ah, more WDADU greatness. My favorite WDADU song for many years, the Killing Hand is flawless musically. Lyrically and vocally, there are some issues. But as Dream Theater’s first released epic, this song will always have a special place in my heart. If only it would find a place on the set list the next time I see this great band perform.

Wait, you don't actually hate AFIL with a passion? It's the only song on WDADU I absolutely despise, incidentally. It's just such a clusterfuck all around.

The other songs are cool, DoC, and it's nice to see some unconventional choices like TDS, even though I don't necessarily agree with them.

It's actually one of my favourites from the album, just behind Afterlife, and Ytse Jam. It still has some minor awkward phrasing and melodies, as the whole album is plagued with, but it's not that bad compared to the rest. And Live at the Marquee. 'Nuff said.
Of course, not even the best of WDADU would have a hope in hell of making my top 50. :lol

Yeah. Granted, it's been a while for pretty much any WDADU song for me, so that might have changed, but the last time I listened, AFIL was the only song where I was really thinking "of my fucking god, when is this over". TOWHTSTS, SS, LFAGA and OAMOT are pretty average, but they have some interesting stuff going on, and Ytse Jam, Afterlife and The Killing Hand just kick ass all around.

Though I have gathered that this is a pretty uncommon opinion in general, so I'll just shut up now. :P

30. Erotomania

Coming in at #30 is my favorite Dream Theater instrumental. Erotomania is such an awesome piece from start to stop.  I absolutely love what Moore is doing in this song. He’s really driving it. And Pertucci’s guitar work is great as always.  I don’t know what else there is to say about this song, other than that it’s a great instrumental!

29. Learning to Live

Up next is Images & Words’ epic album ender. I know a lot of people hold this song as DT’s best, and to some, seeing it outside of a Top 25 is sacrilege.  I don’t mean to take anything away from the song, as it is fantastic, but I feel the same way about the 28 songs that I prefer to this one. The storytelling by Myung via LaBrie is outstanding. The instrumental section is smooth. And it is a great way to end an album. Learning to Live is definitely deserving of all the praise that it receives.

28. Finally Free

While The Spirit Carries On would be a fine way to end Scenes from a Memory, I absolutely love the true album ending song.  Jordan’s work really sets the mood for a brooding first verse.  I love the lyrics, and how the chorus works for multiple characters. The music behind the sampling during the murders is epic and metal. The One Last Time reprise is tragic bliss, and masterfully placed. The drum work to close the album is some of Portnoy’s finest. Love this song, and feel it to be overlooked/underrated by many.

27. On the Backs of Angels

Can I get some love for this intro? What a great way to take your time leading into one of the most epic “riffs” in DT history. This song has it all. Interesting lyrics, expert playing all around, a fantastic instrumental and an above average chorus.  I was already very excited for A Dramatic Turn of Events, but when I heard this “single” my hopes and expectations went through the roof. The band delivered, and this song is a great example of who Dream Theater is as a band.

26. Beyond This Life

That opening riff, that instrumental section, THAT CHORUS, this song has it all. It is a righteous rocker that refuses to allow to listener to catch his/her breath after the end of Fatal Tragedy. I love the straightforwardness of the verses versus the eeriness of the chorus. I love the song, and love the extended version from LaB as well.

Prog fans fear notes.

It's easily one of my favourite songs on the album, and that's because of the instrumental section, not despite it.

Nice update, although LTL and OTBOA wouldn't make my top 50. DRINK!

25. In the Name of God

Coming in at #25 is Train of Thought’s epic album ender. What is not to love about this song? That opening riff is beefy. The lyrics are interesting. The chorus is killer. The instrumental section is flawless. The outro is epic.  I’m glad that I got to see this one live!

24. Honor Thy Father

I’ll always be a metalhead at heart, and this song caters to my tastes wonderfully. This is a 10 minute wall of sound. There are some great riffs on this track. James’ delivery is great for what this song called for. The chorus isn’t that great, but the breakdown and samples are metal as hell. I really love that extra touch that Jordan gives to this song, which may be subtle, but for me, puts it over the top. DON’T CROSS THE CROOKED STEP!

23. Afterlife

Afterlife is a tasty little song.  A great intro, catchy chorus, that awesome unison all add up to a great song. I feel that Charlie is perfect for this song, and prefer the original, I don’t know what else to write about it other than to urge you to listen to it more often!

22. The Count of Tuscany

Up next is a Dream Theater epic that completely baffles me. We start with a touching intro that could have been ripped right out of Awake. Then some awesome heavy guitar work take the song in a different and equally awesome direction. The chorus is absolutely incredible, and one of DT’s very best. But there are two key things that bring this song down a bit for me. #1 is the lyrics. They’re silly and really betray the amazing music that they were written for. #2 I really lose interest around the 11:00 minute mark. This part really puts me to sleep. I appreciate what they were going for, but it’s just not my cup of tea. But despite these two things, The Count of Tuscany is an incredible song.

21. Disappear

Coming in at #21 is the most haunting of Dream Theater’s songs. Disappear is a great way to close out disc one of Six Degree. I love the eerie keyboards that Jordan utilizes. These are James’ best lyrics, and the delivery is flawless. Few songs have devastated me the way that this song did.

I actually like the noise in Misunderstood, it's just the keyboards that turn me off in that outro - everything else in that song rules. I rarely have a problem with Jordan's playing, but his sounds can get on my nerves sometimes! :lol

I think you only forgot Octavarium and Cover My Eyes from that list. I'm not the biggest fan of TSCO, either, but it's a decent tune. Anyway, it's great that there's at least one person whose taste is fairly similar to mine

20. The Glass Prison

My twentieth favorite Dream Theater song is The Glass Prison. This is a metal masterpiece! What a fantastic way to open an album. JP is an absolute beast on this song with the heavy riffs, the incredible solos. I remember when I first heard this song. I marked out for the static beginning. It made me theorize that this album was a sequel to Scenes. Alas, I was wrong, but this song is so, so right!

19. Outcry

This is one of those “This is Dream Theater” songs.  It absolutely blows my mind that ADTOE has no less than five such songs. Outcry is epic from start to stop. That huge riff to open the song, the anthem that is the chorus, the incredible instrumental section, this song has it all. Would love to see this beast get more love around here, but all in all, this is Dream Theater!

18. Breaking All Illusions

Oh look, another “This is Dream Theater” song from the newest album. Awesome proggy intro and instrumental section, the thought provoking lyrics. The smooth solo by JP, this song truly has it all. Good enough to be #1, but alas, there are 17 more that I love just a little bit more.

17. The Mirror

One of my sentimental favorites, The Mirror never fails to life me up after one of my absolute least favorite DT songs (when listening to Awake). That intro is one of my absolute favorites. Love the atmosphere delivered by KM’s keys and samples. I love the lyrics and James’ delivery. I am quite shocked that this song is only at #17, it used to be much higher. But that’s just the way it has to be when you’re dealing with a band this incredible.

16. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Up next is Dream Theater’s longest song. Most of this song wowed me when I first heard it. I say most, because Solitary Shell is an anchor that keeps Six Degrees from making it even higher on my list. But the other “movements” are all top notch. My favorite movement is ABTC (Reprise), but I also love the vibe that they capture in Goodnight Kiss. All in all, a gigantic Dream Theater epic!

15. Fatal Tragedy

A staple on most lists, Fatal Tragedy is just one of those songs that takes you on a furious ride. The first half is pretty straightforward, but still awesome. But that jam session to end the song, that thing is epic. All the musicians are on point and you’d be hard pressed to find an instance of when the band is tighter than they are when navigating the end of this song.

14. Octavarium

Coming in at 14 is the 24 minute epic that DT released in 2005. This song was monumental, and was an impressive achievement.  I loved how the band put so much thought into making the entire album fit together, and this song is all of that effort coming to a head. I hate the lyrics during Full Circle, but I love them otherwise. James sounds great on this song. Razor’s edge is one of DT’s most epic ending moments. All in all, this song is deserving of all of the praise that it receives.

13. A Change of Seasons

A Change of Seasons blew me away when I first heard it. I love the lyrics and the overall theme. My favorite section by far is Carpe Diem. Another World is fantastic as well. I do get a little bored with the Inevitable Summer, but that’s just minor nit-picking. This sound is tremendous, and I envy anyone who has had the pleasure of hearing it live.

Three great songs (good to see that FT is making lists quite regularly at the moment, it was pretty underappreciated a while ago) and one miss.

Octavarium is, in my opinion, one of DT's worst epics. The first two movements have an interesting vibe and I love how everyone works together to create a very subdued mood. Full Circle is quite cool musically, but the lyrics "Oh, let's go all wordplay and stuff" ruin the section for me. Intervals is amazing, I love the instrumental section and the buildup to the song's climax is fucking intense.

...and then comes Razor's Edge, the biggest let-down of DT's career. It just feels tacked on, stupidly long and completely unepic.

So, all in all, not a bad song, but it would never, ever touch my Top 50.

The Full Circle lyrics really put me off the song at first, although I can tolerate them now to the point where they don't detract from the song for me. But I've never considered lyrics to be all that important to a song, so that's just me. I can definitely understand why it affects the song for others.

I've tried to explain it a few times, but ultimately it just feels very drawn out and boring, especially the solo. Now, don't get me wrong, I normally like solos that are more mellow and that don't go out full-shred all the time, but this solo, it's just basically the same melody repeated over and over. And that wouldn't even be so bad if it didn't come AFTER the perfect climax of the song. When I listen to the song, I just zone out during the outro solo. Nothing bad, but nothing that holds my attention.

Yeah I agree with this, I'm not a huge 8vm fan either. Medicate is by far the best part imo. Razor's Edge is overrated but still beats the hell out of the Full Circle part, which I find pretty bad and cringeworthy at times.

12. Misunderstood

In what has been referred to as DT’s experimental album, it’s most experimental song is a cut above the rest. I love everything about this song. The lyrics are great, the chorus is fantastic. The instrumental parts are different, and great. James gives a great performance. This is also surprisingly a great song when played live. I have always been able to relate to this song and its message, so it will always be one of my favorites.

11. Bridges in the Sky

The intro threw me off on the first listen, but this song is an instant classic. I would go as far as to say that this is the quintessential Dream Theater song. It’s one of those songs that is a perfect example of what Dream Theater is. This song is about a journey and it really feels like you are along for the ride. I’ll say it again, this is truly an instant classic!

If it ends up anywhere near as good as SDOIT, yes please.

Six Degrees was the second album with Jordan and the new record will be the second with Mangini, so... :azn: Actually, every time they've made a second release with a new member, it has been notably different from its predecessor: I&W/Awake, ACOS/FII. Hopefully having re-established themselves with ADTOE and getting a new guy into the writing process will help DT come up with something really fresh for the new album! :caffeine:

10. Metropolis

I don’t know what I could say about this song that hasn’t been said in other lists. This is the song that upon listening to one time showed me that Dream Theater was the most talented band that I have ever or will ever listen to. Everything about this song is fantastic. I love the lyrics and James’ deliver. The instrumental section is one of the bands’ best. I finally saw this song live last year, and I’ll die just a little bit happier having done so.

9. Voices

Up next is the best song of the Kevin Moore era. Voices is truly epic. The lyrics are some of Pertucci’s finest. This song was my favorite Dream Theater song for a few years. It would be higher if DT wouldn’t have come out with better and better songs through the years. But I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this classic!

Most of the typical fan favorites, even from the post-KM era, have appeared already... Trial of Tears will most likely be in the top 8, but it's hard to guess what the rest will be.

Yep.

8. Sacrificed Sons

Up next is the other often overlooked epic from Octavarium. Sacrificed Sons packs way more of a punch than it’s slightly bloated album mate. The samples in the beginning set the tone perfectly. The lyrics are nothing to write home about, but they work. The instrumental section is one of DT’s very best. The second half of the section is beyond epic! The orchestra is utilized to perfection. I love how intense the 2nd half of the song is. Truly a great song, and the fact that DT didn’t shoot this thing out right after 9/11 like some other artists and bands did makes me respect the band even more.

7. Endless Sacrifice

Endless Sacrifice is my favorite song from Train of Thought, by far. I was farther from home than I ever was when I was listening to ToT daily.  I had a long distance relationship going on and this song served as the anthem. The lyrics became personal to me. The instrumental section is classic DT akin to Metropolis.  I love how the song gets more intense at the end. This was actually the first DT song that I head live, although it wasn’t on the set list for that night. I was standing in line and got to hear the band run through it during sound check. Fortunately for me, I got to see it two weeks later at another show.

SS is an interesting choice. :tup I really love the song, although it's not top 20 material for me. Top 50 for sure though!
Endless Sacrifice is actually my least favourite from ToT. I love the instrumental section, but I find the rest of the song a little dull. I don't dislike it though. Another interesting choice.

Looks like we have to disagree once again! :lol I think the instrumental section is the weakest part of the song, but I love the rest of it and the intro is really nice to play on guitar. I don't even mind the "nu metal bleeps" in the chorus that some people seem to dislike. Sacrificed Sons is a slightly stronger song overall though.

I already had a feeling most people would feel opposite to me there. I love the fun instrumental stuff like Endless Sacrifice, and Beyond This Life, but for me the rest of the song isn't up to the same standard. I don't dislike it, it just does nothing for me unfortunately.

Nu metal bleeps. :lol I believe you mean the guitar harmonics? I like those.

I have a sort of similar story with ES. When I first listened to it, I only liked Jordan's short piano break, then eventually the whole instrumental section. I couldn't bring myself to really like the rest (although it got better with each subsequent listening), it sort of reminded me of Linkin' Park and all those other bands I hated growing up and had to constantly suffer listening to because my that's what my classmates were into (it was hard being a prog-child). Then I got into a relationship which became long distance after the first few months. I remember listening to this song in my bed (how appropriate), half asleep and the lyrics suddenly just hit me witch such raw emotional power that it instantly propelled ES into my top 10. It's one of the most personal experiences DT ever gave me.

6. Home

Coming in at number six is the epic of Scenes From a Memory. I have always loved Home, and it was once my all-time favorite Dream Theater song. I love everything about this song, except for maybe some of the sampling. I love all of the references to Metropolis. The intro is great. That WOMP WOMP riff is one of the band’s very best. The lyrics and delivery are top notch. Rudess is a monster on this song. I’m pretty surprised that this song is “only” number six, as it’s the “lowest” it’s ever been for me.

It's an awesome song, but it's simply marred by the samples. I just can't take the song seriously after that. Skipping that part, however, gets you right into one of Dream Theater's best solo sections.

5. Lost Not Forgotten

Up next Is a song that grabs you and takes you on a journey, well it might not do that to you, but it does so to me. Lost Not Forgotten is a masterpiece. This wall of sound grabs you from the intro and takes you through great section after great section. The riffs are chunky. The soloing is among DT’s very best. Mangini is an absolute monster on this track. James’ sounds great, as usual. The lyrics aren’t the band’s best, but they certainly lend themselves to the music. I got to hear this one live last summer, and believe you me, it was impressive. Lost Not Forgotten….. Awesome Not Overrated.

4. The Ministry of Lost Souls

I remember listening to Systematic Chaos for the first time. Prophets of War winded down and suddenly the greatest intro that I have ever heard blasted through the speakers. It was enough to immediately hook me. The music was slow, methodical and eerie, like Disappear revisited. These are some of my favorite lyrics too. This feels like such an emotional and thoughtful song good enough to close any Dream Theater album. Then that instrumental version, granted a bit forced, is more of the same of DT doing what they do best. I’ll never take those instrumental pieces for granted, as these musicians are incredible.  “Don’t turn your back on Paradise”  So epic…. Epic outro! A perfect song!

3. Panic Attack

Coming in at number three is another song that I find to be absolutely perfect.  Panic Attack is all that the metalhead in me craves. I love everything about this song, the heavy riffing, the awesome keys that Jordan sprinkles throughout the song, the lyrical content and delivery, that instrumental section, and that furious ending. This song will always be among my favorites of all time.

2. A Nightmare to Remember

Wow! This song absolutely blew me away when I first heard it. This is heavy DT at its very best.  I remember listening to this song over and over again when it came out. The mellower section is my least favorite part of the song, but it does provide tremendous contrast with the rest of the song. I love Portnoy’s drumming. I love his vocal part. I like John and Jordan tearing through the instrumental parts of this song. I’m surprised that this hasn’t aged well with the average DT fan, but that won’t stop me from enjoying it.

Metropolis. Good choice! When I was absorbed in Metropolis fully, I used to listen it more than 10 times a day. I also like its another version in 20th anniversary album, because the orchestra makes it more splendid. One I can't agree with is that six degrees of inner turbulence is positioned on more low rank than it should be on. I think it has enough quality to deserve higher rank.

1.   In the Presence of Enemies

My favorite song of all time is the progressive metal masterpiece that bookends Systematic Chaos. In the Presence of Enemies grabbed me upon first listen and has relentlessly been my favorite song ever since. I love every second of this song. Every player is on top of his game. The lyrics are outstanding, and the flow is superb. I remember seeing DT 3 times on the same leg during the Chaos in Motion tour. I can die a happier man knowing that I’ve seen this beast played 3 times in its entirety. I could go on and on about this song, but I’ll cut it short by saying that I am so grateful that my favorite band has produced such amazing works.

It's a good song, but... yeah, I had fun following your list. Very unconventional choices.

Nah, just kidding. It would be boring if everyone had the same taste.

Wow.

Well, I agree with Scorpion about it being a good thing that not everyone is the same.  Interesting list, buddy.   :tup

Very great list indeed. I enjoyed this. ITPOE is an amazing song, it's #9 in my top 50. I still love the fact that BMS is in your top 50, I love that song! It's hated way too much IMO.

My guess for #1 is ITPOE, although it could also be a surprise pick like These Walls or Misunderstood.
Bingo.
HELL YEAH I'M SO AWESOME! :victorydance:

One of the most interesting lists so far, I like how the typical top 10 picks appeared so early on that it was hard to guess what was coming up.

Interesting list, even though of course 100% different from mine. Notably, only one or two of your top 10 would make it to my top 50 :)
