Yay! New Top 20 thread! I wanted to make a thread for top 20 Genesis lists and here we go!

-Next Up-
Lolzeez (Done)
Unlegit (Done)
Pols Voice (Done)

-May Do One Later-
Beowulf

(Pm/write below to get on the list)

Well,here's my first 3 songs!

20)Fountain Of Salmacis
My first Genesis song. Love it. I really like the last 3 minutes. One of my favorite Genesis solo sections.

19)The Lamia
Great song off The Lamb. I love the vocals here. I also love the outro. Beautiful solo.

18)Second Home By The Sea
Aww man. Love the keyboards on here. Not too forced and awesome. Also, great outro for the side. Fun song.

I'd like to go after you.

The Fountain of Salmacis and The Lamia are great.  :tup Second Home by the Sea is decent, but not as good as the first part IMO.

The Lamia should be higher.

I wonder what number 1 will be :neverusethis:

17)Behind The Lines
One of my favorite intros ever. Behind The Lines actually lives up to that amazing intro and delivers. Pretty much one of the best songs from the popish era...

16)The Burning Rope
Best song off the album. I love the lyrics and the vocal delivery. Not too complex, just plain simple but great song.

15)Eleventh Earl Of Mar
Ass-kickingly good album opener. I love Tony Banks' work on this track.

Yes. My write-ups suck. But hey! This is gonna be a short top 20 list. I should keep going fast right? Anyone else wanna join?

I'm in.

Earl is awesome, but of the Duke opening 3-some, Duchess has always had more of an emotional impact to it for me.

If you're talking jams, what about the second half of "The Waiting Room"?

Another jam that pops into my head is the Lamb medley from 1986 (I think it was on the second Genesis box set) that ends with Supper's Ready.

But to me, Supper's Ready is the single most-definitive Genesis song.  As great as 2nd Home By The Sea is, or Duke's Travels/Duke's End, I don't think anything can surpass Supper's Ready overall.

Burning Rope is great, especially the guitar solo. Rutherford's best electric guitar moment, probably. Eleventh Earl of Mar is one of my top faves. Behind the Lines is also cool. :tup

14)Fly On A Windshield

Holy damn this song is awesome. The solo section is great and the keyboards is really a highlight with the cool effects. One of the highlights from The Lamb.

13)The Knife

The first "epic" by Genesis. Was really sweet when i saw it live. (By a tribute band -.-) The song has that trademark Genesis sound. I also really like the end to the song. Goosebumps. Every time.

12)Dance On A Volcano

One of my favorite Phil era songs. A classic indeed. I love the intro and the keybord work in the solo section. Wonderful.

The Knife and Dance are two of my favorites. Fly is also nice, but a lot of Lamb songs work better in context of the album than as individual tracks.

11)White Mountain

Awesome song from Trespass. Love the chorus in this one. Such an angelic song. Wonderful. This song just defines why I like Gabriel's voice so much.

10)The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

Awesome opener. Amazing piano intro and i also love the bass work done here. Beautiful.

9)The Cinema Show

WOAH! Now from a short little title track we move on to a badass epic. This song has one of the greatest intros ever. The reason this song isn't higher is because i listened to the living shit out of it. Too much to say the least. When Phil and Gabriel go "Cinema Show!" i cringe. I find that really annoying for some reason. But the keyboards steal the show. Perfect. It's just that i grew out of this one a while back. Still, that solo is amazing.  :hefdaddy

8)I Know What I Like

Weird, but i seem to love this song. One of my first Genesis songs and in my opinion on of their best. While this might not be as gigantic as epics like Supper's Ready It's catchy as heck and very fun.

7)Return Of The Giant Hogweed

For some reason i love the intro to this song. I also love that guitar solo. Sadly,it's quite low on the mix but you can still hear it. Check out live versions of this. I remember one where Gabriel was doing this hilarious dance when the drums kick in.

6)Can-Utility And The Coastliners

Very underrated song with an excellent solo section. Love that intro with the acoustic guitar and Gabriel's vocals. He's like whispering at first and then the song evolves into this badass minefield. Gorgeous.

5)Dancing With The Moonlight Knight

One of my first Genesis songs. I still don't know if it's Moonlit or Moonlight. Ah well. Amazing album opener. Seriously, this song is just an amazing sign of what great stuff is up next on the album. Damn,I love this album!

Sorry for the wait. Let me end this list right here and right now.

4)Supper's Ready

The obvious one. One of the greatest pieces of music that I've ever experienced. Now go and listen to this yourselves.

3)Looking For Someone

One of the best intros to any song ever. And I guess the "surprise" of this list. This is the first song from Genesis with their signature "prog" sound. It kicks ass. The song also proves how underrated Anthony Phillips is as a guitarist. Trespass is a usually overlooked album. Just give this another spin.

2)Firth Of Fifth

Dat piano intro. The first time I heard of this song,I wasn't too big on prog. So I always skipped it. That went for the ENTIRE album. I always listened to the intros for like a minute and changed the song. I know. Stupid. Well, this song kicks ass. When the vocals come in,the song has this epic BAM feel. You know what I mean. Oh and the guitar solo is nothing but PERFECT. Love it.

1)The Musical Box

My favorite song of all time. No brainer. You all knew this was gonna be number 1. There you go. That intro riff is pretty much the first time I heard of good music. At the age of 4,I was blown away. Seriously, the song is like a box (lololol) that opens up and reveals the gold inside. The song gives you that feel of goosebumps that you can get anywhere and anytime. That, is when you notice "Wow…I love this." It's THAT moment when you notice that you love a certain genre or a band. It's an amazing feel. Anyways,go and give Nurcery Cryme another spin. I know I will. Oh and btw If you didn't check out my top 50 albums list. Cause I love shameless advertising my other list. Deal with it.

Alright, let's get this going. My write ups are going to be really, really short, so don't expect something like the Rush Top 50.

20. Duke's Travels / Duke's End

A great pair of songs that are mostly instrumental, aside from a couple lines at the end of Duke's Travels. Duke's End would have been an awesome ending for the Duke suite if it would have made it onto the album, but it's still good ending the album.

19. That's All

I'm not the biggest fan of the self-titled album, but this song is great. It's not prog by any means, but it's still a fun song to listen to. The bass and keyboards go very well together. Mike has an awesome guitar solo as the song fades out.

18. The Battle of Epping Forest

The intro and outro to this song are quite cool, but of course the main attraction is Peter changing voices and the many different time signatures.  I wish there were slightly more instrumental parts to the song, and a little less lyrics, but overall, it works well.

17. One for the Vine

One of the last long songs Genesis would ever make. I really like the somber feel of the song. The lonely sounding intro and piano both compliment this feeling very well. The part at around 4:40 is changes the tone, but it's awesome to listen to.

16. Invisible Touch

This song is such a guilty pleasure for me. Definitely nothing prog about this, but it's a really upbeat song and is always a good song to listen to. I will say that the instrumental section is too short and should have been longer.

Oops, forgot about this. Here we go.

15. The Knife

The Knife is definitely one of the most popular Genesis songs from the early days, and for good reason. The soft instrumental section is a good break from the heavy verses. The organ and drums are the highlights.

14. Eleventh Earl of Mar

A great song from an underrated album. The lyrics are a bit odd, talking about his daddy and such. I really like the piano and vocal part and the transition from that back into the main song. The keyboard sound at :52 is worthy of looping and repeating.

13. Watcher of the Skies

What a great intro this song has. It has that really cool atmospheric sound with the mellotron. The mellotron sound is actually cool throughout the entire song. Archive 1 has a version of the song with a nice extension of the ending.

12. In the Cage

Great song from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The other sections are really good, but the instrumental part is the best thing here. Banks had some really great keyboard sounds throughout the entire album, but this is one of the best.

11. Turn it on Again

13/4. That's what this song is in. Of course, it's basically just 4/4 three times, with an extra beat at the end, but it's still cool. The song itself is one of the best from the transition period. I love all the different medleys they did with this song throughout multiple tours. I recommend you check one out if you haven't already.

13/4. That's what this song is in. Of course, it's basically just 4/4 three times, with an extra beat at the end, but it's still cool.

But it's not.  The main riff is divided 6+7, so if anything, it's 6/4 twice with an extra beat.  It's definitely not 4/4 three times because there are no fours.

You might want to tell Genesis that - they've been going on and on and on for decades about how "Turn It On Again" was "in 13/8" (in various interviews, videos, biographies, etc. etc.).

-Marc.

Maybe it's a British thing.  To me, 13/8 sounds like an unusually long measure, but still a single bar, something you might actually see written.  So there's that.

But because the convention is to give the quarter note the beat, I'd call it 13/4 because the main riff is 13 beats long.  But a written transcription wouldn't say 13/4.  There would be alternating bars of 6/4 and 7/4; 13/4 is just too long for a single measure.  Or maybe there's another way to do it that I haven't thought of.  I could see 13/8 as an actual time signature, so maybe that's why Genesis think of it that way.

There aren't really hard and fast rules when the riff is that long.  If Genesis say it's 13/8, then I suppose it is.  But if you write up the sheet music for it, the idea is that someone has to actually read it, in which case you'd give the quarter note the beat, and I'd think that alternating bars of 6 and 7 best conveys the riff.

Something else I just thought of.  Mike originally came up with the riff as a slow, driving beat.  Like "I Can't Dance" but in 13.  Phil and Tony had trouble grooving with it, and they suggested speeding it up.  Perhaps that's why they think of it as 13/8, because originally it was 13/4, and they doubled it up.

Good ol' Depeche Mode.  Saw them a couple of times back in the day (Violator tour).

"windshield", "windscreen".  Po-tay-to, po-tah-to.  Iceberg, Goldberg.  Whatever.  I'm getting too old to keep track of my colloquialisms from various regions of the globe.  Granted, the "americanized" versions are so much easier to deal with.  I mean, you're liable to get lynched if you're looking to "light a fag" in the States.  Just have a smoke.

Funny.  Point taken.

Wasn't my intent, I just was tired and couldn't come up with the right words.  Sometimes words escape me in my old age.  At least I could be the fodder for your humorous remarks.
Really surprised you didn't conclude the "The Lamb Lays Down.." with the final song, "That".

I love the "Huge Hogweed".  That's greatness, I must admit.
If you went with just album titles, you could have:

   Selling Britain By The Quid

My apologies guys, I totally forgot about this thread.  Anyways, I'll just finish up my list here and then someone can take over if they want.

6. The Cinema Show

I love the really soft overall atmosphere of this song. It really is something else throughout the whole intro. The keyboards are definitely the highlight of this song, as they create the feel of it. The acoustic guitar doesn't hurt either.

5. Robbery, Assault and Battery

Very fun song to listen to. The 13/8 part is just stunning. The drumming is my favorite part of the song, and they get absolutely crazy during the instrumental section. Phil sort of copies the theatrics of Peter with the different singing parts, but I think they are done very well. Can't go wrong with this song.

4. Squonk

Another song off of A Trick of the Tail? Yes! This song totally defines the transition period. The drums are great, and while they are not as complex as Robbery, Assault, and Battery, they bring a cool feeling to the song. The song is mostly pretty hard rocking, but at the end, there is a really nice soft section with some organ. I wish this part did not fade out, or at least extended longer.

3. The Musical Box

What a fun song. I can't really say anything new about this song, as it is constantly heralding as one of the top Genesis songs. I will say that it is just a tad overrated, mostly because of the slightly too long intro, but still definitely one of their best.

2. Supper's Ready

Genesis' defining epic for sure. There's only one thing that keeps this from being my number 1: the intro. It is beautiful, but unfortunately, it takes just a little too long to develop for my tastes, and consequently, pushes this song down to number 2. Still, Supper's Ready is very deserving of all the praise it gets.

Also, at 3:38ish, is this very similar to the opening riff of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

1. Firth of Fifth

Close one between this and Supper's Ready, but ultimately Firth of Fifth takes the cake for me. Right from the piano intro, you can tell that the song is going to be amazing (too bad Tony Banks never really played the intro at all live). And it is. If you are not a fan of Genesis, you need to check out this song and Supper's Ready.

There's my list. Again, sorry that I forgot about this. Hope you enjoyed it! Whoever wants to go next can start as soon as they'd like!

Thanks, but its for the best.  My attorney put it best.  After a 5-10 minute summation of what's wrong with the marriage, he said, "What in the hell took you so long, boy?"  I kid you not.  He's a good ol' boy from the country (outside the main Dallas/Fort Worth metropolis).

Alright, I'll have a go at it. :)

20. Blood on the Rooftops

Steve Hackett shows off with some very well done classical guitar playing. The song has a hazy, chilly, atmospheric, and nostalgic feel that fits Wind and Wuthering's cover to a T. Tony Banks perfectly contributes some lush and mysterious keys. The lyrics about pop culture and world events are good and conjure up some interesting imagery. Plus, it's funny to hear Phil say Tarzan, foreshadowing his future Disney career. SPOOKY.

19. Watcher of the Skies

Even though this makes my top 20, I feel like the intro is a tad overrated. I mean, it's cool, but I've never been head over heels in love with it. The song really takes off when the rest of the band comes in. Nice choppy riffs and a kind of military feel throughout. The vocal melodies are sorta unorthodox, but that's what makes it prog, man. Those scratchy guitar squeal things Hackett does are memorable. I love little weird things in songs like that, because they spice things up. Oh, and the lyrics are pretty nifty.

18. Burning Rope

A highlight from a somewhat spotty album. I freakin' love those massive drum fills in the opening. This track has a kind of dreamy, floaty vibe, which is neat, but there is also this underlying urgency mixed in. Mike Rutherford isn't known as a great lead guitarist, but his echoey, Hackettesque solo here is quite effective.

Could the thread title possibly be updated? :D

17. Home by the Sea

I like to count songs separately, so I'm only talking about the first part here. A chilling story served well by poppy and catchy, yet also creepy music. Great lyrics. Collins sings with a lot of emotion, instilling the song with a sense of desperation. I especially like the "sit down" part. Genesis never fully lost their prog edge, even on their most commercial albums.

16. The Knife

I'm not the biggest fan of Trespass (sorry), but I do love this song. It's one of the band's most intense compositions, with some hard rocking moments, as well as a moody middle section for good contrast. Peter's performance is intimidating and commanding. Rutherford's powerful basslines drive the song along nicely, and Anthony Phillips does a nice job too. Not bad for a bunch of kids!

15. Dodo/Lurker

Abacab is kind of a weird album, really. This is the proggiest moment, and man does it ever rock. It's infused with a lot of Genesis' trademark quirkiness, especially in the Lurker section, with that hilarious and zany keyboard melody. Anyway, the lyrics and vocals are pretty crazy, and I like the way the song goes all funky in some parts. Lots of tasty drumming throughout. Plus, it sounds like Phil says Darth Vader (he doesn't, but he should have).

Interesting.  I've always been much more partial to the Second Home By The Sea.  Just good stuff.  But I completely agree with The Knife.  Good hard edge (no pun intended) right off the bat.

14. Los Endos

A Latin-inspired, jazz fusion style track? Sure! The bubbling bass and propulsive percussion just make you want to dance around dweebishly. Lots of fun energy on display here. It was neat to reprise Dance on a Volcano and Squonk, and the little lyric quotes from Supper's Ready are a nice touch.

13. The Cinema Show

Really, the keyboard solo is the main draw. The pre-solo sections are good, even great, although the lyrics are kind of weird IMO. I like that "na na na-na" part a lot. But the keyboard solo. Yes, it's amazing. Some awesome drum work going on underneath, too. Tony incorporated synths a little later than a lot of his contemporaries, but he utilized them well right off the bat. This song's even better on Seconds Out, but I'm ranking the studio version here.

12. The Return of the Giant Hogweed

Those silly lads. PG really shows off his off-kilter, theatrical flair on this one. As an aside, I wish he hadn't stopped playing the flute. Hogweed's sci-fi story is entertaining, and the music is filled with a lot of nifty quirkiness and flashy playing. Nursery Cryme has a raw production quality that actually works well here. The explosive finale surges with raw power, and is one of the band's greatest moments. Turn and run!

11. Dance on a Volcano

Pffft, Genesis won't be able to make it without Peter.......WHOA, THIS IS GREAT!!! That must have been the reaction of many a fan when they heard this here tune. The boyz had something to prove, and they did it right away on this tightly composed, progtastic, memorable song. I love those massive-sounding bass pedals. The hyper instrumental section at the end is ace.

10. The Fountain of Salmacis

THE MELLOTRON. It's the sound of classic prog, and man is it used to superb effect on this song. That intro gives me chills. The song gets really awesome when it turns all rocking in the middle. Mike plays some fun basslines and Phil goes nuts on the toms. For a band that has such a pastoral quality, Genesis was also great at fast and exciting instrumental sections. When I was studying Crete last year, the line "Mount Ida rises like an island!" kept coming to mind. Boo yeah.

9. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight

One of Gabriel's shining moments with the band. He turns in a gripping, charged performance here. The song has a certain intensity to it in both its subdued and loud sections. Genesis knew how to use dynamics to great effect, and DWTMK is a good example. Hackett has several cool moments. The quiet, eerie ending is alright, but unfortunately seems kind of random.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, was talking about Dancing With the Moonlit Knight. But seriously, it's just two sets of four descending notes repeated, but it sticks with me like nothing else. It's really captivating to me, I could listen to it on loop for hours.

8. One for the Vine

Tony Banks puts on a clinic on this expansive and atmospheric mini-epic. He really came into his own on the two post-Gabriel albums. So much so, that it probably made Steve feel marginalized. Anyway, the part where everything goes all crazy in the middle is the best, especially that duck sound. I LOVE it when songs explode unexpectedly from quiet parts to all-out rocking (prog does this a lot). I also love this track's epic ending. Sometimes Collins sounds like a cat in this song. Just felt like mentioning that.

7. Duke's Travels

Duke is a really good album, but it's light on all-out prog moments until this thing comes out and punches you in the gob. Phil lays down some sick, driving beats for Tony to go all fancy over. Some of Banks' best work, I'd say. The whole track flows very well and has a great sense of excitement to it. The reprise of Guide Vocal is absolutely awesome and gives me chills. Such a spot-on arrangement.

6. Eleventh Earl of Mar

A fun song with a good driving energy. Starting off all eerie in an almost tongue in cheek way, it then becomes an upbeat, catchy toetapper. It's hard to not move to the music. I love those parts where it really lays down the stomp with a big ol' rumbly bassline. The airy, peaceful section in the middle is a great breather. It was cool to end the song with the return of the freaky opening.

5. Entangled

A beautiful, mesmerizing track. The chiming acoustic guitars and wispy vocals create a dream-like feel that fits the lyrics perfectly. The haunting keyboards in the last part of the song are incredible. This band sure knew how to set a mood, and this is one of their most successful attempts. It's equal parts serene and unsettling.

4. Can-Utility and the Coastliners

So much of what made Genesis amazing all crammed into a tidy little song. It quickly shifts between different moods without seeming scattered. Starting off pleasant enough, it soon transforms into a turbulent rocker that brings to mind the crashing of waves. And the whole band gets a lot of awesome stuff to do. I love that one frantic bass part. Doesn't Peter sound crazed at the end? Yes, yes he does.

3. Squonk

Genesis is an interesting band in part because of the stories they tell. This story of an ugly, poor little creature is intriguing and ultimately sad. I totally love the drums in this one. Such a great, pounding beat with some cool Phils (har har) thrown in. Mike drives the song along with both bass pedals and bass guitar. The singing is great, although sometimes it's a little difficult to make out the words. I like how the song unexpectedly changes at the end.

2. Firth of Fifth

Wow, what an evocative guitar solo. Perhaps Hackett's finest moment with the band. Chills, man! The rest of the track is top notch, too. It all flows well and is like a nice gift to your ears. Love that piano intro. The synthy fanfare section before the guitar solo is also really nice. I suspect this song inspired Song for America by Kansas (I like namedropping Kansas all the time, since they're underrated and awesome). I'd also like to take this opportunity to say that Genesis has a lot of cool song titles.

1. Supper's Ready

What can be said. One of prog's premier epics. The heavy, apocalyptic subject matter gives this song a weight that separates it from the band's more oddball songs. Yet even this contains the highly bizarre Willow Farm, which is a nice change of pace from the rest of the track. Supper's Ready goes through many moods and styles and doesn't feature a large amount of repetition, but it still feels cohesive to me. The dynamic range is awesome, and demonstrates that prog drew from classical just as much as from rock.

One of the best parts of the song is the pretty, delicate flute melody after Willow Farm. And the intricate yet intense Apocalypse in 9/8 shows that the band could prog it up with the best of them. The epic's triumphant ending is absolutely amazing, and really set the standard for "How to Conclude a Prog Epic."

And that concludes the list. Thank you for reading.
