Hello! Per the advice of jingle.boy (who must know what he's talking about because his postcount is twice mine), I should go ahead and start my roulette because antigoon is slow. Well, ladies, there's nobody quicker than me. ;)
THE FORMAT
My song roulette will be pretty standard. Seven participants, seven rounds, no elimination. As for scoring, the round's best song will get 7 points, and the worst will get 1 point. Participants who fail to meet the deadline will get 0 points, so we can get my roulette out of the way and let somebody on the waiting list have their turn. At the end of the seventh round, the person with the most points will be the winner, and I will change my avatar, signature, and personal text to "(winner's name) is the best person" (which would create a paradox and destroy the universe should H win). Keep in mind that all deadlines will be 24-48 hours after the previous round's results were posted, so please do not participate if you're not willing or able to check in at least once a day for the next couple weeks.
THE SONGS
In general, there will be no time limit to the submitted songs, and there will be no global restrictions on genre or artist. The rounds will have themes, but they won't be too restrictive; my goal here is to discover great music that I probably wouldn't hear otherwise, and participants who are able to provide that for me will be rewarded. As usual, all songs should be sent by PM; I prefer Spotify links but Grooveshark and Youtube are OK too.
To the detriment of my participants, I don't have a last.fm. Looking over my iTunes library, most of the artists are pretty well-known rock and metal bands. As a general rule, we can assume that if it's a radio rock classic, I'm familiar with it and I have some familiarity with most of the bands that are talked about on DTF all day long, so stay away from those. Generally, the obscurer the band is, the better. However, I'm also not going to provide a list of artists I'm familiar or semi-familiar with because I don't want my participants to approach this saying "well, he likes bands X and Y, so I think he'll like Z"; simply send me something you enjoy and I'll rate it honestly.
I recognize that this approach can be confusing. To that end, I will allow people to submit more than one song per round. If I'm familiar with the first song, I'll default to the second listed, and I'll default to the third listed if I know the second song, etc. You can also re-submit non-ranked songs. Say you send me songs A, B, and C for round 3, and I rank song B; this means I was familiar with song A, and that you can re-submit song C during rounds 4 and beyond. You can also PM me at any time to ask me about my familiarity with a band's catalog, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible, but I can't guarantee that this will be before the deadline. Be prepared to use brute force if your library isn't full of indie darlings with 10 fans, because if you fail to provide me with a song I've not heard before the deadline, you will get 0 points for the round.
Alllllllright! The first 7 people to post here will be the roulette's participants, whose names shall be engraved in stone here:
1. Elite
2. Nekov
3. jingle.boy
4. lonestar
5. kingshmegland
6. MasterShakezula
7. WindMaster
The first round's deadline will be but 24 hours from now, so get registered and get your submissions in. There is no theme for this round. GOOOOOOOOO

So, I'll send you something for round 2 within the next 12 hours. After that, it will be on monday.
Can I get an e-mail address to send the stuff to?
EDIT: Got it, thanks :)

Can I get an e-mail address to send the stuff to?
Yep, PM sent.

Gotta see if I can actually *beat* Nekov (finished 1 point behind him in RJs). Count me in... even though I know absolutely nothing about you musically.
This ought to be fun!
or frustrating as all hell
-
Add me.
-
Count me in!
-
And sent before the pool is full. :hat
-
Shaping up to be one hell of a pool, by the way. :hat Two spots left. Get them while they're hot.
-
I'd like a spot.
-
I'd like a spot.
Hell no.
Just kidding. The spot is yours. One left.
-
Hhhhmmmm, I'm thinking of sending something "space-y".
:preparestodefendmyself:

I picked something well off-kilter. If I get a score above 3 for it, I'm calling it a success.

Hhhhmmmm, I'm thinking of sending something "space-y".

Let the music defend itself, man. :hat
THERE IS ONE SPOT LEFT. SOMEONE SHOULD TAKE IT BECAUSE THE ANTICIPATION IS KILLING ME

I'M TAKING THAT SPOT K?

OK

Alright, ladies, you've got roughly 20 hours to deliver the proverbial goods. Remember, you can submit 1 nude pic of yourself with each nomination to get up to 1 bonus point per round.
-
Sent, minus nude pic.
-
Sent, minus nude pic.
bummer :(
Anyway, jingle messaged me asking me a couple demographic questions. It would probably be unfair to share that information with him and not with you, so:
What time zone are you in?
Central time zone. (I'll include a reminder that I'm in central wherever relevant as well.)
How old are you?
I'm 19, beginning my second year of college. However, one could say that I am pretty culturally out of touch. :lol I grew up listening to roughly the same music my father grew up listening to, which should say a lot.
Growls? Screams?
I do not enjoy growls. I will listen to your song if it there's growling in it, but don't be surprised if you get a 1. :lol However, I find that screams can be utilized very cleverly.

Sent'd.
You're all playing for 2nd place bitches!

Ironically, I'm still waiting on the 2 people that were quickest to sign up for the roulette.

Nekov better be busy writing his results.

Just got home. Sent
-
Hey, my timezone is different! :P
Anyway, sending shortly. I just said the same thing in Nekov's roulette; I'm leaving in two hours and I'll be back Monday afternoon, so that's when I can check the results and sen you the next song.
EDIT: Sent! And I sent you two songs, just in case you know the first one, since I won't be able to send anything else for the next 2-3 days.
-
Excellent! That's all 7. With that, I'll break the proverbial silence and reveal to Shake that he can effectively consider his experiment a success. ;)
-
Does that mean mine is worse? :lol
-
Does that mean mine is worse? :lol
I just started listening to yours, so we'll see.

Ranking time! Let me start by saying that I was very, very impressed with the quality of the songs submitted. Each song that was submitted could, in some universe, be a song that I could just throw on because I was in the mood for it. However, one person had to be the best person.
7th place
Nominator: WindMaster
Artist: Eumeria
Song: Legion
I don't know, I have trouble writing about this one. The unfortunate thing is here that I don't really think there's anything wrong with this song; however, there's also nothing that immediately grabbed me either, which is essential for roulettes such as mine. It sort of sounds just like any other "epic" symphonic technical metal I've heard, which isn't a good thing. Sorry man, but you get 1 point.
6th place
Nominator: Elite
Artist: Thrice
Song: Daedalus
Again, nothing wrong with this tune. It was perfectly pleasant; I particularly enjoyed how the composition itself isn't all too complex, but the talented musicians and vocalist really sell the song. Love the emotion here, and the syncopated groove at 3:30 or so was a highlight. However, 5 songs were better. Elite, you are an unfortunate victim of circumstance, and for that reason you get but 2 points.
5th place
Nominator: Nekov
Artist: Freakeys
Song: One Cup, One Lighter, One Jack
Now this is what I'm talking about: a technical metal piece that doesn't drift into a sea of cliche! The melodies were catchy, the composition was clever, the production was great and the musicians were immensely talented. Of particular note was the bass solo at 3:00 or so, which was tasty as fuck. For general tastiness, you get 3 points.
4th place
Nominator: lonestarbaconandporn.com
Artist: The Deadstation
Song: Hundred Foot Drop/Subsistence Defined
Here's where we start to get really good. In a shallow way, I guess you could compare this song to the 7th place Eumeria song, being that they belong to the same "loud, epic, and technical" metal subgenre. However, while I found Legion a bit cliche and obvious, Subsistence Defined is creative and moving. It starts with an ambient drone giving rise to a pulsing synthesizer; we're then cast into the bombastic main section with little to no warning. That introduction is intense, man. Listen to it loudly. I'm pretty sure I audibly said "holy fuck" when those guitars kicked in. :lol Also, the vocalist is incredible. Jesus, man.
The thing about this tune is that it doesn't deliver consistently. Some of the riffs held my attention more than others, and it's really quite a long piece. Unfortunately, being generally awesome but not awesome for every single second wasn't enough to make it during this particular round. :lol A commendable 4 points.
3rd place
Nominator: MasterShakezula
Artist: CAN
Song: Vitamin C
I hesitated putting this one so high, but the fact of the matter is I had more fun listening to this song than any of the others, and that's what counts, isn't it? Wikipedia tells me this is a single from a Krautrock band, "Krautrock" being a subgenre I have absolutely no familiar with whatsoever. I generally like alternative music, and this song was carried mainly by an awesome groove (let that be a lesson to you, gentlemen: grooviness is a good thing). The composition was creative, the lyrics were interesting (to say the least :lol ), and the song generally brought a smile to my face. Loved it. For Master Shake, a better-than-expected 5 points.
2nd place
Nominator: jingle.boy
Artist: Dec Burke
Song: Small Hours
An immensely likeable song in the tradition of classic prog. It's just a fantastic little tune, and I sense some real musical joy in the choruses, something which I don't hear enough of in modern music. Speaking of the choruses, they're this song's real draw. Dec offers an extremely catchy melody, and you get a multi-part harmony free of charge; the instrumentation and arrangement are really lovely here. Not much more to say about it, I suppose. A well-deserved 6 points.
1st place
Nominator: kingshmegland
Artist: I Mother Earth
Song: God Rocket (Into the Heart of Las Vegas)
I would make love to this song if I could. A masterpiece of ambient rock. It is perfect. Keep it up, your highness. 7 points but only because that's the maximum.
1. kingshmegland - 7
2. jingle.boy - 6
3. MasterShakezula - 5
4. lonestar - 4
5. Nekov - 3
6. Elite - 2
7. WindMaster - 1
The theme of the next round is "Night and Day". If you're wondering what that means, well, it doesn't mean very much at all. :lol I told you my themes would not be very restrictive; it's just something to get you thinking. Good luck, everybody. See you Monday.

ROUND 2 - NIGHT AND DAY
Deadline: Monday, July 9 @ 9 PM Central time (or whenever Elite gets in his nomination)

Will definitely be following, even though nothing of what I could find of these songs immediately grabbed me. I'm keeping my hopes up, though. Like your writeups, btw. :tup

Wow, that was fast. I'll take some time during the weekend and I'll send something your way.

BOO YAH!!!!! :metal

I'll take 2nd.

I'm just giving you a grace round that you can enjoy but don't get your hopes up.

I've been going through my music and looking to see what he might now know. I love sending bands people know nothing about.

Ranking time! YAAAYYYYYYY
7th place
Nominator: MasterShakezula
Artist: Ween
Song: Mister, Would You Please Help My Pony?
Oh man, I don't even know where to start with this song. :lol The nominator's justification for this particular song was that the lyrics contrast with the song's tone, and by, do they ever. The song describes, in pretty gruesome detail, what happened to the narrator's pony. The pony desperately needs help (his lung's fucked up, as it happens), but he can't really describe his situation because he is a pony. We don't hear what happens to the pony, unfortunately. Actually, the song ends very quickly (probably a segue to the album's next song), leaving the listener with a lingering sense of loneliness, despair, and confusion.
Anyway, this was a strange song, but it wasn't awesome strange, like the CAN song was. I guess you could say I didn't really "get it". Shakey gets 1 point.
6th place
Nominator: jingle.boy
Artist: Blessed By a Broken Heart
Song: Rockin' All Night
jingle knew I was familiar with Spock's Beard, so he couldn't submit Day For Night. Unfortunately, the song he did submit was worse by orders of magnitude. :lol I didn't know they still made music like this, man. This is a song that could've been a hit in the 80's: it's very catchy, and it is in no uncertain terms about partying. It's not notable in any way; it's one of those "I had some guitars and a record deal so what the fuck?" songs. Unfortunately, nothing in the song grabbed me, and for that reason jingle gets 2 points.
5th place
Nominator: Elite
Artist: Katatonia
Song: The Longest Year
Here's a tune from the album "Night is the New Day", which explains its submission in this round. This song was fine. I didn't find it incredible or anything. I particularly enjoyed the breakdown at 3:05 and how the verse before led into it, but other than that, there wasn't anything very notable here. 3 points.
4th place
Nominator: lonestar
Artist: Mechanical Poet
Song: Old Year's Merry Funeral
A very interesting song. The album is called "Woodland Prattlers" (whatever that means), and the band's style is very Victorian and very steampunk. This comes out most obviously in the song's orchestration, which features in addition to the typical metal instruments, piano, strings, some wind and brass instruments, what I believe is a synthesized harp, and an interesting music-box sound at 1:57, which is my favorite moment of the tune.
I do give it credit for being a truly orchestral metal piece, and for covering a lot of ground in 7 minutes (in that it rarely stays on one riff for long). The downside to this approach is that I had some trouble wrapping my head around the piece structurally; as a whole, it didn't make much sense to me. Also, there's an orchestral breakdown in the middle which I didn't really enjoy, because few musically interesting ideas were posed therein, despite its orchestrative originality. In spite of its flaws, I enjoyed the piece, and it gets from me 4 points.
3rd place
Nominator: WindMaster
Artist: Between the Buried and Me
Song: Mirrors
When I found out WM had submitted a BTBAM song, I was not happy. :lol I've listened to a bit of BTBAM; I had mostly heard good things about Colors and wanted to see what the hype was about. Needless to say, I disliked the vocals. :lol
So I went into this song expecting the worst, and I was pleasantly surprised. A melodically interesting, original, and somber piece. I get a real Mars Volta feel from the introduction, and that's always a good thing. However, the musical interlude in the middle of the piece was by far my favorite part here. Very groovy but yet laid-back and not less emotional. Great stuff. For the previous round's last-place finisher, a well-deserved 5 points.
2nd place
Nominator: Nekov
Artist: Illegal Aliens
Song: Ratrace
Now, here's a song that's "good weird". I've never heard anything quite like this; it's a song with jazz and gospel sensibilities in spite of its metal sound. More than that, it's tasty as fuck, and the melodies are unquestionably catchy. The best moment for me was the "have you ever been electrified" chorus, with the inter-line scatting.
I don't really know if I have anything more to say about it; it's a song that, against all odds, draws you in and will not stop until it puts a smile on your face. I greatly enjoyed it and will be checking out more by this band. 6 points.
1st place
Nominator: kingshmegland
Artist: Slow Motion Reign
Song: Life Simulator
Turns out that his highness's chest-pounding was not premature! Consider this a second "home run". This is a wonderfully dynamic piece, fluctuating between dissonance and wonderful resolution; the song's main rhythmic motif, heard during the verses, is excellent and imaginative on its own, but for me, the real treat is how it leads into the choruses, which are perhaps more traditional of heavy alternative music but when combined with the verses are majestic, rewarding, and interesting. One feels a certain tension from the introduction's tonally uncertain riff, and this is intentional; this is a song that knows how to create resolution from tension, and that knows how to create that resolution in interesting and uncommon ways. In other words, this is a song that knows how music works. 7 points.
1. kingshmegland - 7 + 7 = 14
2. Nekov - 3 + 6 = 9
3. jingle.boy - 6 + 2 = 8
3. lonestar - 4 + 4 = 8
5. MasterShakezula - 5 + 1 = 6
5. WindMaster - 1 + 5 = 6
7. Elite - 2 + 3 = 5

ROUND 3 - WRATH
Bonuses: Obamacare (2 points), The Best Band Ever (1 point)
Deadline: Wednesday, July 11 @ 6:00 PM Central time
Obamacare (2 points) : Sometimes, the government has to step in and help the less fortunate. It's a fact of life. The person in last place at the end of round 3 will get a government-sponsored 2 point bonus. Obviously, these points cannot be spent on alcohol.
The Best Band Ever (1 point) : This is a Tribute: the person who submits the song whose length is closest to that of my favorite Rush song gets a 1 point bonus. He will also be admitted to Paradise, which has a wide variety of delicious milks to sample.

Good luck, everybody!

Awesome, I'll take that!!! :metal

It's Katatonia, without the R :lol
Anyway, I'm not doing very well am I? :p
At least the song did fit the theme, I guess.

Whoops, sorry. :lol

Ok, I just gotta get this off my chest. With pretty much ZERO direction on your musical tastes other than 'I'm 19 and grew up on my dad's music', how could you not like what is the equivalent to 80s glam metal!?!?!!? What did your dad grow up on, New Kids? Boyz2Men? Sheesh. Well, ya can't win them all. Unless your username ends in shmegland. :lol
Wrath... hhhmmmm have the perfect song for that, but I've used it in Roulette's before. Unlike my comrade from south of the equator, I'm gonna try using different stuff.
*goes to study library*. So, 6:30CT deadline tomorrow, right?

:lol The sad thing is, I knew what you were going for with that suggestion too, and it hurt to have to do that to you. I do like some pop metal -- Van Halen, Night Ranger, early Crue -- but on the whole, "glam" does nothing for me. Sorry, but I had to do it. :lol
The deadline's two days from now! 48 hours to get your picks in, just to help get back in the rhythm of things. The deadline after that will probably be 24 hours, though.

"Wink, wink. Does she go mate?" "Nudge, nudge, wink, wink?"

I just wqant to say that the orchestral bit in the middle was a thematic and lyrical element, and it wasn't meant to serve as groundbreaking music. The son is about the old year lamenting his death on New Years Eve, the orchestral bit is the clock counting down to midnight.
Wrath, damn, I sent my two best wrath songs in the last two roulettes, but I'm sure a bitter old fuck like me can succeed in this thing without the sexual favors some other people*kingcoughcough* are passing out for winning scores. ;)

Sorry man, I had a horrible day and I've been away from home for over 16 hours. I'm dead tired right now and I'm going to bed. I'll send something when I wake up. If this lands me zero points for being late, so be it. I'm too tired and worn out to give a damn.
Nah bro, you'd actually be early. :lol
-
I personally like taking a day to figure out a song to send but also get in in so that the person running the roulette gets to listen to it and it becomes an earworm.

It's not bad advice. I try to give all my songs equal listens, but there are certain advantages (or, as jingle rightly pointed out, disadvantages) to getting your song in 36 hours before everybody else.

RANKING TIME WHEEEEEEE
On the whole, this round was not as good as the previous two. A lot of positively boring metal songs here. Probably my fault for making the theme "wrath", in retrospect. :lol
7th place
Nominator: lonestar
Artist: Otep
Song: Ghostflowers.
lonestar conceded in his PM to me that he would probably take a hit by submitting this song, and it seems like he was correct. :lol Didn't care for this one. I suppose I rather enjoyed the first minute but the remainder was very lost on me. I like lonestar and I don't want him spitting in my food should I ever dine at his Bacon Palace, but 1 point.
6th place
Nominator: Nekov
Artist: Pantera
Song: Revolution is My Name
I'm not an enormous Pantera fan; their music "rocks" and serves its purpose well, but I guess I don't really care for the purpose. The song didn't really speak to me. 2 points.
5th place
Nominator: jingle.boy
Artist: Prymary
Song: The Enemy Inside (pts 1 & 2)
To be clear, jingle sent me as his submission the first two parts of a multi-part epic; he justified it to me as being analogous to Overture/Temples of Syrinx.
This song (or semi-song, whatever) was fine, I suppose. Nothing particularly good here. It's a very derivative and obvious prog epic (it reminds me of a few Symphony X epics, which isn't necessarily a good thing). Also, the singer is quite bad, unusually for a prog band. I don't know. 3 points.
4th place
Nominator: Elite
Artist: Mastodon
Song: Curl of the Burl
Another merely OK tune, though we'll start to see more genius with places three through one. Cool song. Some cool riffs. Nothing special. 4 points.
3rd place
Nominator: WindMaster
Artist: Orphaned Land
Song: The Path, Part 1: Treading Through Darkness
I guess this is a pretty standard epic as prog metal goes, but it's pulled off well nonetheless. The intro is fine but the tribal motif the band moves to at about the 1-minute mark is where things get very good. This segues nicely into the piece's main theme, a rather majestic but simple progression featuring a synthesized choir. Every now and then, a growly voice chimes in to say something unintelligible, but the voice isn't too intrusive and is there for contrast.
Not too much to say about this one. It's not a life-changing tune or anything, but it knows what it's doing and it does it well. 5 points.
2nd place
Nominator: kingshmegland
Artist: Karnivool
Song: Set Fire to the Hive
Elite actually submitted this tune as his second choice, but even if it had been his first choice, shmeg got there first.
So here we are. We've got a very good song here, but I have trouble elucidating my thoughts on it. In short, this song rocks. The real draw here was how the song dealt with wrath; what I like is a band that can be angry but express that anger without resorting to cliches, over-technicality, blastbeats, or drop-C chugging. Each musical idea is interesting, creative, and ultimately unrelenting, and the well-executed lyrics help in that they give the band a real-world reason to have wrath in the first place. A personal favorite moment is the buzzy, tonally-confusing riff at 0:45 or so. 6 points for the nice man.
1st place
Nominator: MasterShakezula
Artist: Ben Folds Five
Song: One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces
Master Shake seemed to be cowering in fear as he submitted this song. :lol It is poppy, doesn't involve guitars, and isn't prog, he warned me. I would not enjoy it if I was a proghead, he said. Let this be a lesson to all of you: I am not.
He also mentioned that he submitted this in order not to send an obvious metal tune. I'd be lying if I said that didn't help; the rest of the songs I heard kind of blended together, but this one stood out.
Of course, I'm not just giving the top spot to this one because Shakey's song was unlike the others; that would be quite lame. I think this is song is legitimately excellent. This is a piece built around a strong melody, and I am very impressed by how big a sound they're getting out of what seems to just be a three-piece. The musicians are excellent, and the song is honest and emotional and real. Good stuff. 7 points.
BONUSES!
The Best Band Ever: My favorite Rush song is Limelight (obviously), which is 4:20. Lonestar gets this bonus; Ghostflowers was 4:27, beating Set Fire to the Hive by one second. To lonestar, 1 Rush Point.
Obamacare: Before receiving the bonus above, lonestar and Elite are tied in last with 9 points; the bonus gives lonestar a slight edge, allowing Elite to pick up the 2-point Communism bonus. Ironically, this pushes Elite one space ahead, keeping lonestar in last anyway. Sorry, buddy!
This round's unexpected events leaves Shake in second place, with Nekov, jingle, WindMaster, and Elite tied for 3rd two points behind him. lonestar is just behind these four, but kingshmegland has an unsurprising handsome lead on everybody. Standings follow:
1. kingshmegland - 14 + 6 = 20
2. MasterShakezula - 6 + 7 = 13
3. Nekov - 9 + 2 = 11
3. jingle.boy - 8 + 3 = 11
3. WindMaster - 6 + 5 = 11
3. Elite - 5 + 4 + 2 = 11
7. lonestar - 8 + 1 + 1 = 10
Because Wrath didn't work out too well for anybody, let's go in the opposite direction, shall we?

ROUND 4: THOUGHTS
Bonuses: ESP1 (2 points/participant)
Deadline: Thursday, July 12 @ 9:00 PM Central Time (~30 hrs from now)
ESP1 (2 points/participant) : Calibration check! With your submission, tell me what place you think it will get (7th, 3rd, 1st, etc.). If you guess correctly, you have proven that you have ESP, and you will get a 2 point bonus. You'll also get a TV show where you pretend to talk to the dead relatives of confused people for money. Neat!

So, wait a minute? Because someone sent THE EXACT SAME SONG I DID, but I was later, I still received the same amount of points for falling in last place?
What a way of breaking the rules :lol

Not quite sure how "Wrath" and "Thoughts" are the opposite. Also, to get another thing off my chest
3 points.
Part 1 was an instrumental!
*thinking on what to submit* Gotta get back to my Round 1 ways. Seems like this is King's to lose.
-
Man, so this is what it feels like to be in last place, kinda sucks ass to be honest.
-
I'm OK with you not liking that song but I was at least expecting a comment about how awesome the riff is.

14th place
Nominator: Nekov
Artist: Stupid band for impatient people
Song: Stupid song for impatient people
This song was stupid. -6 points.
I thought you didn't fuck around.
That was supposed to be the joke. I guess I didn't make that clear. :lol
Anyway, I'm starting the writeups now.
-
I think i partially got that joke. :lol
-
I'll check this out tomorrow morning. This old fart need to say night, night.
-
Okay, first of all: no more Anathema. :lol A bunch of great songs this time. Also, unsurprisingly, everybody pegged themselves fairly high, with a few people vying for first. Only one song can get the top spot, unfortunately.
7th place
Nominator: WindMaster
Artist: Rishloo
Song: El Empe
An unusual tune, for sure. It's certainly metal (that is to say, I'm hearing some definite "wrath" in this one). Good melodies, apt songwriting, plenty of emotion. The production's not very good, but I suppose that could be a plus in some respects. Favorite moments include the quiet, sonic section in the middle, and the "stay wheeeeeere you" in the last chorus, which was very impressive vocally.
It was a fine song, but it didn't grab me. It was missing something, and yes, that is as specific as I can be. 1 point.
6th place
Nominator: MasterShakezula
Artist: The Cure
Song: A Forest
A good song. Very relaxed, very groovy, very 80's. I do enjoy this type of music; I envision its being a very good driving song. It's mysterious, creative, and sonic, yet simple and accessible. It gets 2 points but only because this was a very competitive round. AGAYN AND AGAYN AND AGAYN AND AGAYN AND AGAYN AND AGAYN
5th place
Nominator: jingle.boy
Artist: Gowan
Song: A Criminal Mind
More 80's, huh? But this song is really 80's. Like, I listen to it, and I might as well be watching the A-Team and drinking New Coke. Anyway, being 80's isn't necessarily a good or a bad thing, but it does lend the song a certain charm that it would almost certainly suffer without were it released today.
Anyway, this is a fine song. It's repetitive and a bit too long for its own good, but it's catchy and ambient and it accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. The bass is also quite tasty, and I particularly enjoyed the echoey synth drums during the second verse. 3 points.
4th place
Nominator: lonestar
Artist: Martin Orford
Song: Out in the Darkness
Now, here's where the judging got incredibly difficult. In a lesser round, any of the remaining songs could have gotten 1st place, but this was a tough one.
Okay, so first of all: if you sent this song to me with my religious persuasions in mind, well done. :lol The description for the Youtube video calls this the greatest atheist anthem since XTC's "Dear God", and that's probably an accurate description. The lyrics deal with the artist's disbelief in God in no uncertain terms, but they're subtle and poetic enough not to be cringe-worthy. The music is excellent as well, taking cues from classic prog. (Minus the vocals, the music rather sounds like 80's Rush to me, which is always a good thing.) The riffs are catchy, yet smart, which is probably the best combination you can ask for. A musical highlight is the middle section featuring the multi-part vocal harmony. A well-earned 4 points to hopefully elevate lonestar from his funk.
3rd place
Nominator: kingshmegland
Artist: Shudder to Think
Song: X-French Tee Shirt
shmeg's PM to me really talked up this song, gushing particularly about how the song only has 3 chords. I was obviously unimpressed, because Green Day does this to little effect every day. :lol
However, as a music lover, I have to admit that I've never heard anything quite like this. Listening to this song is nothing short of an experience. The vast majority of this song hangs on an unimbellished Bb power chord, but it's hard to describe the musical effect the band draws from such simplicity. The vocals make great use of the Lydian mode, which gives the last 2 minutes a certain degree of dissonance and tension and yet beauty in spite of the complete lack of musical progression. The chorus, while brief, is also excellent; there's something unusual going on with its second chord, which I can't quite pick out by ear. I'll definitely be looking into this later.
3 chords is quite few, even for a pop song (which normally makes use of 4 if not more), but I'm amazed by how much substance was pulled from them. I'll be thinking about this one for a while, and making me think was the point, wasn't it? 5 better-than-Green Day points.
2nd place
Nominator: Elite
Artist: Anathema
Song: Thin Air
1st place
Nominator: Nekov
Artist: Anathema
Song: Untouchable pt. 1
Now, I'd never heard any Anathema before today. 2 people submitted Anathema songs and they got the first 2 places. It is now illegal to submit any more Anathema songs because unless these two songs are exceptionally, unusually good, any other Anathema will probably also get first place. :lol
These songs are very perfect. I suppose they're sort of structurally similar in that they start off with a quiet guitar riff which serves as a rhythmic/melodic motif that will be repeated throughout the piece, before heading into loud, majestic, and synth string-filled territory. That's not a bad thing, though, because it works. Great songwriting, great musicianship, great vocals. This is just great, expertly executed modern prog.
Both songs were deserving of the number one spot, but I had to give the edge to Nekov because his song was just a bit more perfect in all respects: the songwriting was a bit more controlled and tight, the production was fuller and clearer, etc.
To Nekov, 7 a-bit-better-than-Elite points, and to Elite, 6 a-bit-worse-than-Nekov points.
BONUSES:
ESP1: nobody correctly guessed their placement. I won't reveal the exact guesses (you can reveal your own if you want), but interestingly, everybody overestimated themselves, except Nekov and Elite, who underestimated themselves by just a bit. 0 points for everybody, but don't worry, because there will be further opportunities later in the roulette to prove your psychic worth.
1. kingshmegland - 20 + 5 = 25
2. Nekov - 11 + 7 = 18
3. Elite - 11 + 6 = 17
4. MasterShakezula - 13 + 2 = 15
5. jingle.boy - 11 + 3 = 14
5. lonestar - 10 + 4 = 14
7. WindMaster - 11 + 1 = 12

ROUND 5 - JUST DON'T SEND ANATHEMA
Bonuses: BITSOW (2 point), The King is Dead (steal 1 point/participant)
Deadline: Sunday, July 15 @ 9:00 PM Central Time (~48 hours from now)
BITSOW (2 points) : Brevity is the soul of wit, they say, or as the more witty among them say, BITSOW. The shortest song submitted gets a 2 point bonus. Remember that I won't judge your song more kindly if it's especially short, so you don't want to send LA Drone from How the West Was Won. Sending LA Drone would be a good way to guarantee yourself 3 points for the coming round, though.
The King is Dead (steal 1 point/participant) : The participants who get 1st and 2nd place in round 5 (NOT overall, just for the round) will be able to steal 1 point each from the opponent of their choosing. Stealing is fun!

Allright already! :censored. What the flagnar? You chastise my 2011 release a few rounds ago for sounding too 80s like. So, I submit a song very unique and un-80s sounding, and still get chastised for it being from the 80s. Methinks there's some decade-bias going on here! I'll accept the score, but you're a little bi-polar on your rational for the scoring. :lol
Somewhat serious, mostly not serious
Oh well, since there's no hope for victory now, I'm gonna go with the 'who-the-fuck-cares' strategy.
Will send in the morning. Time to go fronkenstein.

Also, the song wasn't chastised for its decade.
Anyway, being 80's isn't necessarily a good or a bad thing, but it does lend the song a certain charm that it would almost certainly suffer without were it released today.
I said outright that the song wasn't better or worse for its 80's-ness, and that its 80's-ness gave it a certain charm.

For someone born in the early 90s, I'm not sure how you can make that proclamation. Was just pointing out that your comments come out with a somewhat anti-bias towards a perceived "80s" sound. But no matter. I didn't lose any sleep over it.
Short and sweet huh. I'll just have to peruse a playlist I have just for that purpose.

Eternity is beautiful.
Wait until you hear the albums that come after that. My personal favourites are the last two.

So, what I should have said in sending that song to you was the use of one chord 85% of the time. :lol Couldn't get it out when I was typing. :lol But it is a song that makes you listen over and over. I till you what, the album is a hard listen. You come out of it thinking, "Do I like this album?" Then over about 10 to 15 listens it sticks. The album is called, Pony Express Record.

Alright, alright, I was just making sure. But if you read to OP you'd see that youtube is ok. :P :P :lol

Alright, I'll do a youtube link. :)

Well done Elite, I thought of sending that one too but Weather Systems is providing lots of joy for me these days.

-
Yeah, I'm still unsure which I like better, but I think I'll have to give the edge to We're Here Because We're Here, less stuff that doesn't go anywhere, imho. Plus WHBWH has A Simple Mistake, which is my favourite Anathema song :)
Also, SONG SENT.
-
So, is anything happening here?
-
Fucking around again I see... ;D
-
Yep, I was. See, my natural inclination is not to finish the things I start, so this last leg might be difficult, but I'll push through. :tup
Starting on the writeups now.

Oh no, definitely not. I'm not going to pull a numbers. :lol

7th place
Nominator: Elite
Artist: dredg
Song: Stamp of Origin: Take a Look Around
Being one of the few participants who took the BITSOW challenge seriously, Elite's song runs just under a minute long. What we've got here is a musical interlude, and a pleasant-sounding one at that, but by virtue of its length, the song just didn't go anywhere. It was effectively a verse, but verses aren't really anything without the rest of the song, you know? 1 point, but at least you got the bonus. :lol
6th place
Nominator: jingle.boy
Artist: Roswell Six
Song: Ishalem
In case you didn't gather from jingle's "finger", this song is very long. Eleven minutes, in fact, making it the longest song I've gotten thus far. :lol
More standard prog, I guess. Unfortunately, the song just couldn't keep my attention, which is the absolute worst thing for a song of this length. I see no reason it had to be this long, and I couldn't remember a single musical idea from the piece when it ended (a curse when you're ranking seven songs based more or less on your first impression of them). 2 points, but don't give up hope, jingle.
5th place
Nominator: lonestar
Artist: Stargate
Song: Save the World
A good prog metal tune, if not an overly standard one. The symphonic bits were a nice touch, and the vocalist and bassist were great. The chorus ("re-ACT-ion") is probably the highlight here, particularly the "whoa-whoa-whoa". The last minute or so was also great. Didn't reach the heights of 4th place and above, though. 3 points.
4th place
Nominator: kingshmegland
Artist: Moe Tar
Song: Friction
shmeg said he "went out on a limb" with this one, and that resulted in his worst score of the entire roulette, so maybe he should stay off those limbs.
In all seriousness, this song was fine. Very, very unusual, but the problem actually isn't in the song's strangeness; I dug the off-kilter groove, and I suppose I enjoyed the music all the way through, but the problem was in the presentation. The music was so unusual and intense (many measures of 3/4 and 7/8, usually with eighth- and sixteenth-notes) that it actually became a little frustrating. And it didn't help that the singer's nearly always singing, from the very beginning of the track. I guess you could say the song left no room to breathe, which is a big deal if you're going to write a song that's this crazy. It just gets kind of samey (never a good thing). If the song were ~2 minutes longer, with a not-so-involved instrumental in the middle, I might place this one a couple spots higher. In any case, his highness gets a not-too-shabby 4 points.
3rd place
Nominator: Nekov
Artist: Marco Minnemann
Song: Waiting for Boys and Girls
I'd never heard any of Minnemann's solo material, as a matter of fact. I learned about him for the first time when I found out he had auditioned for DT, and I quickly decided he was the guy for the job. I admit I was wrong.
Anyway, this song was great. Very ambient, very jazzy (two strictly good adjectives, in my book). I'm particularly impressed by how much musical ground is covered over the course of the piece; a lot of thought is put into the phrasing and rhythm of each measure, with the tiny segments at 0:50 and 1:20 being particularly unlike the groove of the remainder of the piece. The piano is the star here, and its melodies are beautiful and powerful. If there are any faults, it's that it's too short; Marco left me wanting so much more. 5 points.
2nd place
Nominator: MasterShakezula
Artist: Phish
Song: Squirming Coil
Wonderful. I'd heard some Phish before, and none of it caught my ear, but this is something special, here. The first minute or so evokes a classic rock chorus, but it quickly becomes a different beast altogether. That motif fades into the light strumming of an acoustic guitar, hinting at a jazzier direction for the coming minutes. After some time, uptempo drums give way, and we launch into one of the more pleasant jams I've ever heard. Of particular note is the piano solo at 2:43 or so, leading into a verse featuring some rather silly lyrics. Around 3:40, we've got a final instrumental interlude, which is suitably majestic for its purposes. This leads, naturally, into a reprise of the chorus.
Structurally, this song is really something else. It's a good thing to listen to a song and not quite know where it intends to go next. On the whole, the music was groovy, jazzy, and pleasant, and the musicianship was great. Have 6 points for your trouble.
1st place
Nominator: WindMaster
Artist: Mumford and Sons
Song: Dust Bowl Dance
An incredibly great song. I'd never heard anything by this band before. I knew they were a new group with a folksy vibe, but I'm definitely going to have to check out more, because this was a fantastic tune. It rocks hard, and is yet classic; the songwriting is fantastic - the chorus is quite the earworm - and the execution is perfect. From practically nothing, the piece escalates to a startling intensity, but yet it doesn't feel out of place.
Great musicianship, by the way. Props to the drummer; the syncopated rhythm at 3:05 was one of my favorite moments of the song. The solo banjo also added quite a bit, and I loved the vocalist. 7 points.
BONUSES!
BITSOW: Elite got 2 points for submitting a song that was 0:59 in length. He also took my advice by getting last place. Yay!
The King is Dead: WindMaster and MasterShakezula, being our top 2 for today, each get 1 point. I'm also taking 2 points from kingshmegland because I assume they both want to steal from him. Wind and Shake, if I guessed incorrectly and you wanted to steal from someone that wasn't kingshmegland, then tell me and I'll correct that right away.
1. kingshmegland - 25 + 4 - 2 = 27
2. Nekov - 18 + 5 = 23
3. MasterShakezula - 15 + 6 + 1 = 22
4. Elite - 17 + 1 + 2 = 20
4. WindMaster - 12 + 7 + 1 = 20
6. lonestar - 14 + 3 = 17
7. jingle.boy - 14 + 2 = 16

ROUND 6 - THE MODERN
Bonuses: Rumpelstiltskin (2 points/participant), ESP2 (Up to 7 points/participant)
Deadline: Wednesday, July 18 @ 9:00 PM Central time (~48 hours from now)
Rumpelstiltskin (2 points/participant) : It's time for a true test of friendship. With your song submission, tell me my first and last name. Shouldn't be too difficult if you know where to look. (1 point for only one name. No points lost for guesses.)
ESP2 (Up to 7 points/participant) : Battle of the psychics! With your song submission, bet me any number of points N between 1 and 7. If I give your song N points or higher, you'll get N points as a bonus; if the score I give your song is lower than that number, you'll lose N points. Here's how that works:
If you bet 1 point, you'll get 1 bonus point.
If you bet 2 points, you'll get 2 bonus points unless you get last place, in which case you lose 2 points.
If you bet 3 points, you'll get 3 bonus points if you get 5th place or higher; otherwise, you lose 3 points.
If you bet 4 points, you'll get 4 bonus points if you get 4th place or higher; otherwise, you lose 4 points.
If you bet 5 points, you'll get 5 bonus points if you get 3rd place or higher; otherwise, you lose 5 points.
If you bet 6 points, you'll get 6 bonus points if you get 2nd place or higher; otherwise, you lose 6 points.
If you bet 7 points, you'll get 7 bonus points if you get 1st place; otherwise, you lose 7 points.
These are organized such that the risks and rewards increase as you go down the list. If you bet 1 point, there's no risk but little reward; if you bet 7 points, there's a great possibility for reward but high risk. If you have any questions about this bonus, feel free to ask; I'm sure this is confusing. :lol

It brings me great joy that you dug the tune that's turning me into a Phan.
Also, how modern do you mean by modern?
-
I mean "modern", whatever that means to you.
It doesn't even have to be modern, honestly. If you haven't noticed, I haven't been ranking people based on how well they fit the theme, so you could send me Buddy Holly if you wanted. :lol

LONESTAR! I'm missing a bet from you.
Sorry bro, brain fart.

An interesting round, for sure. This round was unusual; all the songs were very good, but for the first time I didn't feel like there was a clear winner. This was a hard ranking to do, given that I didn't want to give any of these songs 1 point (or 7 points, for that matter). This also means that my writeups will be very boring this time around. Deal with it. :lol
Regardless, on to the fun stuff.
7th place
Nominator: Elite
Song: Forevermore
Artist: Gov't Mule
I hated to put this one here, especially since it seemed like Elite really loves this song, but that's the way the pieces fell. I liked this song, particularly the melodic progression during the verses, but it didn't speak to me so much as the others. Bummer, man. 1 point.
6th place
Nominator: WindMaster
Song: All Out of Peaches
Artist: Galactic Cowboy Orchestra
An interesting instrumental, for sure. It's sort of repetitive for the first couple minutes, but it's the instrumental theme that comes in at 1:40 that really ties this piece together and makes it worth listening to. Taken altogether, this is a very enjoyable tune. Have 2 points.
5th place
Nominator: MasterShakezula
Song: Cities
Artist: Talking Heads
Groovy, dude. 3 points.
4th place
Nominator: lonestar
Song: Common Ground
Artist: IQ
This was my introduction to IQ. I liked it. :tup
A very ambient piece with subject matter to match. It's melodically strong and musically interesting. Have 4 points.
3rd place
Nominator: jingle.boy
Song: Unearth the Truth
Artist: Flaming Row
jingle told me that if I didn't give this song at least 4 points, I didn't deserve to be on a prog metal message board. Well, I'm still here, so that should tell you something, huh?
This is a good tune. I particularly enjoy the chorus; there's just something about the melody that really hits me. Great instrumentation. Favorite moment was the crazy riff at 2:40. Have 5 POINTS!
2nd place
Nominator: kingshmegland
Song: More of a Climb, Less of a Walk
Artist: This Day and Age
Another great sonic rock piece from his highness. The delayed guitar sounds great. This kind of tune just puts you in a trance. Anyway, 6 points.
1st place
Nominator: Nekov
Song: Little Talks
Artist: Of Monsters and Men
Ah, a wonderful little tune. Very pleasant, very catchy. Nekov said to me that he got this in his roulette and couldn't stop listening to it; I certainly see why. As a matter of fact, I think I'll listen to it now... 7 points.
BONUSES!
Rumpelstiltskin: Unsurprisingly, most participants got the bonus. The answer, for those of you who didn't get it, is on the DTF Facebook group, in the DTF names-Facebook names document.
jingle.boy, WindMaster, Lonestar, MasterShakezula, and Elite each get 2 best-friendship points. Nekov gave it an admirable shot, telling me my name was "Nathan?", but that, unfortunately, was not correct. kingshmegland gets 1 acquaintanceship point for getting my last name right but my first name wrong (it's Ricky, not Robert. :lol )
ESP2:
Participant Bet Score Points
Nekov 4 7 +4
kingshmegland 5 6 +5
jingle.boy 6 5 -6
lonestar 4 4 +4
MasterShakezula 2 3 +2
WindMaster 2 2 +2
Elite 4 1 -4
1. kingshmegland - 27 + 6 + 5 + 1 = 39
2. Nekov - 23 + 7 + 4 = 34
3. MasterShakezula - 22 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 29
4. lonestar - 17 + 4 + 4 + 2 = 27
5. WindMaster - 20 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 26
6. Elite - 20 + 1 - 4 + 2 = 19
7. jingle.boy - 16 + 5 - 6 + 2 = 17
-------
ROUND 7 - IT'S ANOTHER FUCKING OPEN ROUND
SPECIAL FUCKING SCORING
Deadline: I DON'T KNOW ANOTHER 48 FUCKING HOURS (Friday, July 20 @ 9:00 PM Central Time)
SPECIAL FUCKING SCORING: It's a traditional end-of-roulette wager. You must bet at least one point, and you can bet up to the number of points you currently have.
I will still rank songs. The participants who get 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will win their wager; the participants who get 5th, 6th, and 7th place will lose their wager; and the participant who gets 4th place will not win or lose any points.
No points will be given out based on ranking this time around.

Yeah, this basically.
I'll send something when I find the (hopefully) right thing. It's not like I really have a huge chance of winning :lol

I don't know what to send and i'm not sure about the wager either. King, wanna share your strategy?
If I'm confident in the song and to theoafs style I will guess high on the points but if I'm not confident........
-
I'm probably going to take a tremendous risk, both in my points and in the song, just for the hell of it.
I think I've got it down what to send, so Ricky, you'll get it before tonight.
-
I'm deciding between 2/3 very different songs.
@King: I listened to what you've sent so far and I've found some very awesome stuff. Your first place is well deserved.....
so far
Edit: Seofas, can you provide an email address so I can send you the mp3? The song I'm looking for is not in grooveshark and youtube sounds like crap.
-
Thanks man! You try to figure out what the person running the roulete loves and try to send what you have. It's not like I'll send him so 80's hair metal. I do have a lot of it too. :lol
BTW What songs did you like that I sent?

:lol
I know, I have a huge pro library that I'm keeping shut myself.
Regarding your question: Life simulator, More of a climb, less of a walk and God Rocket

Shit, this ranking will be difficult.
-
Shit. going over a friends house. Will look at the results when I get back.
-
It's ranking time. The outcome may shock you.
First, a review of the standings:
1. kingshmegland - 39
2. Nekov - 34
3. MasterShakezula - 29
4. lonestar - 27
5. WindMaster - 26
6. Elite - 19
7. jingle.boy - 17
RANKING:
7th place
Nominator: WindMaster
Song: Bonden og Kraka - The Farmer And The Crow
Artist: Tempest
Weird stuff, dude. I can't get into it.
6th place
Nominator: Elite
Song: Mercy (Duffy cover)
Artist: Triggerfinger
I have heard the original, and I'm not a big fan. This version didn't do too much for me either, though. Singer's cute, I guess.
5th place
Nominator: MasterShakezula
Song: Decades
Artist: Joy Division
Yep, nothing happened here. Completely and utterly flaccid.
4th place
Nominator: Nekov
Song: Heaven Alive
Artist: Oceansize
I liked it, but it ultimately wasn't good enough to crack the top 3.
3rd place
Nominator: kingshmegland
Song: Tightly Wound
Artist: The Pineapple Thief
To the surprise of no one, his highness captures my heart with a final sonic treat.
2nd place
Nominator: lonestar
Song: Sugarmice
Artist: Marillion
Beautiful, evocative, and thoughtful. :tup
1st place
Nominator: jingle.boy
Song: Nice Guys Finish First
Artist: Frameshift
Congrats, jingle, you've finally cracked it. :lol Funky and excellent. I love the tribal feel of the chorus.
SCORING
First, the losers. WindMaster, Elite, and MasterShakezula got 7th, 6th, and 5th place respectively, meaning they unfortunately lost their bets. They bet 6, 18, and 1 points respectively, so for the three of them:
Windmaster - 26 - 6 = 20
Elite - 19 - 18 = 1
MasterShakezula - 29 - 1 = 28
Nekov, our current 2nd place holder, stays steady at:
Nekov - 34
The question is, now, how the scores of the top 3 will stack up. jingle.boy bet the house and won 1st place, giving him a grand total of
jingle.boy - 17 + 17 = 34
This mean's that jingle's tied with Nekov. Hopefully, that outcome is agreeable with him, given that he joined the roulette to "see if he can actually beat Nekov". :lol
Next, the king bet 6 points and won, giving him
kingshmegland - 39 + 6 = 45
Now, this result is interesting for a couple reasons. First of all, Nekov bet 10 points, telling me that if he won the bet that would be enough to surpass shmeg if he chose to bet little. If Nekov had gotten 3rd place instead of 4th, he would have 44 points, which would still not be enough to surpass shmeg's number one spot. :lol
Now, I don't know why king bet 6 points. I think he wanted to have a bit of a buffer in case jingle's or Elite's big bets worked out (though losing 6 points would have in fact put him behind both jingle and Nekov, again by one point).
But that may not have been the best choice, as lonestar bet the lot and landed in the top 3. This doubled his score, leaving him with
lonestar - 27 + 27 = 54
In the end, lonestar beat kingshmegland by 9 points; kingshmegland could only have beaten lonestar with a bet of 15 or higher.
In short, here's how points were distributed:
kingshmegland - 39 + 6 = 45
Nekov - 34 = 34
MasterShakezula - 29 - 1 = 28
lonestar - 27 + 27 = 54
WindMaster - 26 - 6 = 20
Elite - 19 - 18 = 1
jingle.boy - 17 + 17 = 34
And the final rankings:
1. lonestar - 54
2. kingshmegland - 45
3. jingle.boy - 34
3. Nekov - 34
5. MasterShakezula - 28
6. WindMaster - 20
7. Elite - 1
lonestar, your prize is in the mail.
-
Huh. Well, that's cool. I'm glad i didn't wager more on that song.
-
Fuck yeah!!!!!!
:victorydance: :footloose: :metardica:
Gotta give credit to my #1 song of all time, Sugarmice, thanks for coming through when I needed you, again.
Gotta work now, I'll be back to gloat more later tonight!!!!!!!

Booyah. Other than Nem's where I came out of the gate real strong, I seem to do better towards the end of the roulette. Glad you liked that one Ricky. Nicely run roulette. Keeping things moving is a real +.
Congrats to King (who delivered the most consistent performance), and to chef for having enough points to really make it count when he blew his load.

'Twas a fun roulette to follow, and congratulations to lonestar for the win!
Sugar Mice is awesome.

Hey, I just wanted to thank you oafs for having me on your roulette. I had a blast. I think you dug the music I sent and I hope you check out the bands catalogs.
Just be happy I didn't send Winger. Since I am an old fogie and have all their CD's! :lol
Thanks again!

oh I have to thank you as well for putting up with my non-stop shenanigans :heart

What a way to get back home from a weekend away, congrats Lonestar!

Yeah, thanks a lot for participating, everybody. I heard a lot of great new music, and I've got quite a few ideas for my next time around the proverbial block. It was a lot of fun.
I think I'll wrap up this thread the only way I know how...
