There wasn't a thread on this yet, was there?
I'm on my first listen now. It's damn good. Anyone who knows me knows I'm quite the Coldplay fan, but screw it, this is real good.
It retains the more outwardly experimental feel of VLV, but instead of the grittiness that they used to great effect in many parts of that album, this one is, bar a few moments, very poppy, keyboard-driven, layered and big. It sounds like a clash of VLV and X&Y, but whereas that album (X&Y) was great in parts and flat and uninspired in others, they pull it off extremely well this time.
Oh, and the Rihanna track's a stunner.
-
I'll listen to it later this week or so. Not that excited because I don't really like the two tracks I already heard.
-
I've given it a few spins, I like it so far.
-
I'll have to give this a listen. I prefered the first 2 albums to the following 2 though..
-
I didn't know there was a new Coldplay album out. I wasn't too impressed with VLV but I'll check this out as soon as I can.
-
well VLV was far, far more inspired than the horribly generic/played safe X&Y even if it wasn't gold like A Rush of Blood.
-
I was never a fan of this band, but I did think that Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends was fantastic. Shockingly fantastic. So, I'll be interested to hear what this new one sounds like. I wasn't a fan of that single they released from it a few months back, so we shall see.
-
AWESOME I didn't know this was out. Listening now.
-
Listening now.
Cool front cover.
-
rly cool front cover. I listened to it once. It's alright; I need to give it some more listens.
-
Viva La Vida is a pretty good album. I wasn't that impressed with "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," so I haven't paid attention to Coldplay recently and forgot about the new album. Might listen on Spotify later.
-
I liked the first half of Rush Of Blood.
Now I think they blatantly wanna be U2 so....Bad [ no pun intended ]...
Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall just makes me think of Where The Streets have No Name...
Chris and Jonny even copy Bono and The Edge's stage moves when they play live.
I watched them do a gig on tv once and they were doing the whole "matador" thing that Bono and Edge do on "Until The End Of The World".
::)
So yeah...flame on etc. :flame:
-
I've only listened to the first few tracks and they sound great. Paradise is a terrific song.
-
They played "Paradise" on The Colbert Report and it was, shockingly, the very first Coldplay song I've ever heard. It was pretty good actually, considering all the crap they seem to get. Maybe I'll pick up MX or VLV sometime but I'm trying to cut back on music buying for a bit.
-
Viva La Vida is a fantastic album. I like everything else from the band too, though not to as great a degree.
"Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall", "Major Minus", and "Paradise", though... all three have been really generic and bland. It sounds like they were trying to copy some other band I've heard recently, just recycled. Really worried for this album now. Still looking forward to hearing it, though.
-
I like Coldplay, and Parachutes is to this date my all time favorite from them. As for this new Mylo Xyloto... I think the singles are actually the weakest songs off the album. Didn't like Hurts like Heaven, Paradise is just meh, Princess of China... Just No, and I grew tired of ETIAW. Best songs for me are Us Against the World, Up with the Birds, UFO and Charlie Brown for now.
The album is OK for me, but none of the songs blew my mind like when I heard Death and All His friends for the first time. Or maybe just Up With the Birds ;)
-
I'll listen to it later this week or so. Not that excited because I don't really like the two tracks I already heard.
I wasn't a fan of that single they released from it a few months back, so we shall see.
To be honest, I wasn't hugely thrilled with either when I heard them pre-release, but within the context of the album, they've become something else and started to shine. I think it's the sort of album that comes together very nicely, it flows really well, and the tracks all compliment each other.
Still early days, but at the moment, I'd say my second favourite, behind Rush of Blood and just ahead of Viva La Vida. This is quite an incredible album.
-
I really like Coldplay, think they get a bad press due to how popular they are.
Yes they wanna be U2 but.....they do it so well.
The new album is goin down well also at the minute.
And Parachutes for me is a classic !
-
Jools Holland last night...
Chris REALLY cannot sing live can he ?
He's worse than Matt Bellamy when it comes to being constantly out of breath and his falsetto is WAY off { chris }..
-
Live stream of a Coldplay concert:
https://www.youtube.com/ColdplayVEVO?feature=ticker
-
It won't load for me.
-
All I can say is..
Radiohead is better :footloose:
-
It won't load for me.
You lost a pretty good show. The only parts that bummed me were the new songs. Kinda underwhelming, especially if compared to Rush Of Blood's and Viva La Vida's.

He sounds fine there.
-
Didn't know about this show. Will have to watch/listen to it tomorrow.
Coldplay's live show wasn't as good in the days of their first few albums, but they have enough material and confidence now that they seem to effortlessly throw out really great energetic performances.
-
MX has grown on me a lot - on my fourth listen and i'm humming/singing along to half of the songs, despite not thinking much of them before.
I like how big the whole production/mix is, it's lovely and uplifting without being I walk beside you cheesy.
-
I'm an idiot who's only heard their hit song and likes it.
Should I anything else by them?
-
Definitely - of their first three albums, a rush of blood to the head is their best (and their magnum opus) - check out pretty much any song from it, it has plenty of singles (clocks, the scientist etc.)
Parachutes is their first which is also good and in the same style.
X&Y is their third record, it's pretty uninspired, i've seen it described as "so inoffensive it hurts", because it's so play-it-safe, that in the end there is only one outstanding song on the record (Fix You)
Viva la Vida was when they dared to experiment and do something different - to great results. It's less straight forward than the first three records but definitely has some great songs - each song on the album feels very different too.
The new album seems to have continued this nicely by not being viva la vida 2, but retains a feel that was felt on it as well as Fix You on X&Y.
Sorry that's really convoluted and not clear.
TL;DR get A Rush of Blood to the Head. You won't regret it. If you do, pick up Viva la Vida or the new album.
-
That's not a bad summary of their career, I agree on almost every point.
I don't think X&Y is quite that bad though. It is definitely their weakest album, hurt mostly by the production (which they've tweaked and works incredibly on MX) and Chris Martin's total overuse of falsetto. There are still some great songs on there; the first four, A Message, Low and Kingdom Come are all very good. But the other half of the album is pretty bland and flat, and notably, that includes three of the album's singles, Talk, Speed of Sound and The Hardest Part. (Though the Leftrightleftrightleft version of The Hardest Part is amazing).
I also found X&Y a bit of a downer when it came out because Chris Martin had been talking in the press about how Coldplay were about to deliver their OK Computer and go very experimental (which I suppose they did one album later). In the end, I think they pulled back because, after having talked himself up, Chris broke under self-doubt, which is reflected in quite a lot of the lyrics.
-
Enofication!
I wonder how much cash Brian Eno gets to walk into the room and tell them: "This is crap, start over"?
(Huge Eno fan here)
-
The opener and the second song are excellent. A lot of filler. The single is great. The Rihanna song is awesome. And filler.
-
which is reflected in quite a lot of the lyrics.
Oh god that's the worst.
On the first two albums the melancholic lyrics and sound worked fine, but by X&Y, it began to piss me off "waaah i'm sad, look at how miserable everything is" oh wait look at my life, it's actually awesome.
X&Y is so safe/play by the numbers that it's boring and disappointing, and lazy. Just being a pop rock or rock band doesn't mean you should release the same album over and over again (3 doors down and ac/dc I'm looking at you).
-

Yeah, I know what you mean by this, but I think the sheer amount of falsetto he's using on some of those songs contributes to that tone almost as much as the lyrics.
-
I need to get this!
-
About three listens in, I've decided I like the new one. It's no Viva la Vida, but it's good.
I'm still in shock over the Rihanna song, though. I loathe her voice and kind of want to hate the track on principle, but she does a good job on a good song.
-
Yeah it's a pretty good album. Nothing entirely mindblowing or groundbreaking, but definitely enjoyable and fun.
-
Princess of China is a bafflingly great song. Rihanna is perfect on the song too, surprisingly.
-
I have to be honest, until now I've always really hated Coldplay. I've always found their singles boring and and Chris Martin's vocals whiny. HOWEVER I just saw the video for Every Teardrop is a Waterfall and that's a damn great song! The synths give it a sort of 'Madchester' 90s vibe, and I even like his voice on it. What album is that song from, and are the other tracks on it similar? It's their Travis-y songs like Yellow that I can't deal with.
-
yeah, was really into this album for a while. major minus/hurts like heaven/charlie brown/every teardrop/paradise are the best songs. probably the best album that coldplay have ever put out, in my opinion. great music!
-
The new album is good, but it doesn't touch Viva la Vida...
-
The new album is good, but it doesn't touch Viva la Vida...
I agree. There are some really cool songs, but it's missing that magic.
-
Actually I think this is their best album. Before I only liked a few songs casually off of each album, but this album was pretty fantastic in every regard, really.
-
The new album is good, but it doesn't touch Viva la Vida...
Exact opposite for me.
-
Yeah, I most likely prefer MX to VLV.
-
da fuk
-
VLV > MX
-
VLV > MX
This.
However MX has grown on me a little. Don't Let it Break Your Heart is a great song, as is Up with the Birds and the ones I mentioned over a month ago. It has some songs that I don't like (Hurts Like Heaven is a song I hate to like, and I didn't like Princess of China or Paradise at all) but it isn't that bad. Nothing compared to Viva la Vida, though.
-
Hurts Like Heaven is awesome.
-
your body is awesome
-
Hurts Like Heaven is good, but I hate that the title track is a 43-second intro to it as a separate track. If you listen to just Hurts Like Heaven, it is jarring for that to start suddenly. Not sure what the point of making that intro a separate track was, but it's annoying.
-
Because Coldplay, I guess :lol
-
I've had a pretty dramatic change of heart over the past few days. I'm growing to love this record, and I think it's an excellent compliment (complement?) to the earthy sounding VLV.
-
Yeah, I am really digging it as well. I still don't like it as much as VLV, but is is a more than worthy follow-up to the (still) shocking greatness of the previous album.
Two really good Coldplay albums in a row! Has hell frozen over? :lol :lol
-
:lol I'd love to know how much input Brian Eno has had in the creation of these records. I'd guess a lot.
-
:lol I'd love to know how much input Brian Eno has had in the creation of these records. I'd guess a lot.
Considering the differences between the last two and their first three, I'd say "a fair amount". I mean, the music and writing is still definitively Coldplay, but there are some bits and pieces, here and there, that are a bit Eno-ish, I'd gather, at least, as being "new to Coldplay", so are likely the results of Eno's input.
-Marc.
-
Question: are Rihanna's vocals auto-tuned on Princess of China?
-
I love this album. Particularly "Every Teardrop". I could listen to that song for hours.
-
Paradise was playing in the Gym the other day and I ended up liking it a lot.
-
I got into Coldplay a while ago, and A Rush of blood to the head turned out to be my favorite album of theirs, although X & Y had its share of great songs. However, I was also pleasantly surprised by Mylo Xyloto. Paradise, Hurts like heaven and Major minus are the ones I liked the most, but Princess of China was surprisingly cool as well. I don't know about her vocals on there, Kev.
-
Question: are Rihanna's vocals auto-tuned on Princess of China?
Doesn't sound like it, no. I mean there's always pitch correction but I don't really hear it. Did you think they were?
-
The new album is good, but it doesn't touch Viva la Vida...
And I'm honestly surprised anyone would think differently. It lacks the bombast that Viva La Vida has. Coldplay set themselves up to write epic records and then they put out MX. They needed an Achtung Baby moment and what we got was less than stellar.
-
Question: are Rihanna's vocals auto-tuned on Princess of China?
Doesn't sound like it, no. I mean there's always pitch correction but I don't really hear it. Did you think they were?
I didn't, but a friend of mine heard the song and was convinced there was.
Also, I recently saw the grammy clip of them performing part of the song together and Rihanna sounded atrocious "trying" to sing her part, so that did make me wonder if she was even capable of singing that well, even in the studio.
-
WTF? 'Parachutes' is where it's all at. And maaaybe AROBTTH. That was Coldplay making honest, moody rock music. I honestly don't know where it went wrong with this band.
'Viva La Vida' has got to be the most annoying song ever written. I don't know why Joe Satriani would try to implicate it was actually his melody.
-
Very good album. Kinda tapers off at the end for me, but the first five tracks are ridiculous. All of them are still so nice to listen to.
-
Question: are Rihanna's vocals auto-tuned on Princess of China?
I'm sure Chris Martin's were. The guy can't sing.
-
I think I like this album better than the last one.
-
Been listening to a lot of Parachutes the last few days. I really love that album.

I can totally understand that. I only like their first two records unfortunately.

New track entitled "Midnight" by these guys. It's getting lots of Bon Iver comparisons, and rightly so-- it's an electronic song with a crisp, cold feel to it... very different from Coldplay's usual efforts. I really like it.
-
It's alright. I can see it growing on me. Certainly doesn't deserve a lot of the vitriol being thrown at it that I've seen on Facebook and YouTube. Let'em experiment a bit.
-
I like it quite a bit. Chill electronic is all I've been listening to lately so I'm all for it.
-
Actually the song has been getting mainly praise... something this different from their previous outing has many fans quite excited.
-
Not sure how I feel about the vocoder approach on Midnight but I like the direction they're taking. I think they went a bit overboard on the pop sound with the last record so I'm hoping they get back to their roots.
Also, Atlas is an incredible song. Brings back the magic of their first couple albums. If there more stuff like that on the new album then I'm a happy camper.
-
The new album is entitled "Ghost Stories" and will be released on May 19!
Here's the first single "Magic." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PvBc2TOpE4&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PvBc2TOpE4&feature=youtu.be)
Edit: On first listen the song's not bad. Sounds like a more experimental version of the stuff they did on MX. The second half is definitely better than the first. Really anticipating this album.
-
Absolutely love Midnight, and Magic is pretty mellow, but still catchy and quiet; I like it. I like the direction they're headed in and this new style. Pre-ordered.
-
1. Always In My Head
2. Magic
3. Ink
4. True Love
5. Midnight
6. Another’s Arms
7. Oceans
8. A Sky Full Of Stars
9. O
-
Target version will have three bonus tracks. Wondering if it's three actual songs or just acoustic/remix/live songs.
-
BBC performance of "Oceans" from the new album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axWQoA1Psh0&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axWQoA1Psh0&feature=youtu.be)
Excellent song. I don't think Mylo Xyloto was up to their standards but they seem like they're getting back on track with this one.
-
Absolutely love it. I haven't liked Coldplay in a while but these new songs they've released have been among my favorites, Oceans being in the top spot now. I love the simplistic approach but it's still very mellow, pretty, and dreamy. I have a feeling this will be my favorite album by them. :heart :millahhhh

"A Sky Full of Stars" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp7NtW_hKJI&feature=youtu.be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp7NtW_hKJI&feature=youtu.be)
-
Damn dudeman, I have loved every track thus far. This album could be a big one for me. Catchy stuff; awesome.
-
To follow up on my last post, that Target deluxe edition's three bonus tracks aren't remixes or anything. They're their own tracks.
10. All Your Friends
11. Ghost Story
12. O (Part 2/Reprise)
-
Oh shit! Nice. Here I come, Target.
-
some of "Always in My Head" was played on Zane Lowe: https://www.josepvinaixa.com/blog/coldplay-ghost-stories-always-in-my-head-radio-premiere/ (https://www.josepvinaixa.com/blog/coldplay-ghost-stories-always-in-my-head-radio-premiere/)

-
Niiiice! Loving it so far.
-
Yeah this is a really good album.
-
I've only listened to a few of the pre=released tracks, but I'm really not that fussed with what I've heard. When the album's out, I'll give it a few listens online somewhere before I purchase.
-
I've listened to the album six or seven times now (had it playing as background music to Titanfall for a while... ??? :lol) and while there's not a whole lot on the album that makes me super excited or get into it, but I kind of love that about it. It's very quiet (except for Stars), simple, and atmospheric. I really like that about the album and it's highly replayable (especially since the end song re-fades into the beginning).
-
Love the new album. Its very chill and exactly what I'm looking for at this point in my life.
-
As a huge fan of Xylo my initial reaction to Ghost Stories is kinda luke warm, I've listened to the album maybe 4-5 times and I think I really love half the songs, the others I dont really care much about.
-
I've only spun the album once, but it seems really laid back, atmospheric and electronic - not my cup of tea. I prefer their stadium rocking sound over this. Hopefully I will learn to like it.
-
I'm different than the two in the last posts, I absolutely love this laid back, atmospheric direction, but I guess that makes sense given my tastes. The melodies are really, really good, and the songs just seem really genuine and sincere. Plus, O is probably one of the best songs Coldplay has ever released.
I really love the bridge in Ink, too. Some people have mentioned they don't like that one, but it is easily one of my favorites.
-
After a few more days of listening there are only 3 songs (True love, Another's arms & Oceans) I don't connect with but just love the other 6 songs. I can't stop listening to sky full of stars over and over again, love it to death.
And if anyone is listening on itunes check out the visual album listen, it's really cool I wished that was available as well. It goes so well with many of the songs with Midnight being my favorite visual sync.
-
I'd say so far, I find it... alright? It's an alright album, but I really don't see myself coming back to this one often. I like Magic as a single, Another's Arms stuck out most to me, and it really seems like a good album to put on when I want to chill, but I have other records that are better for that. I do like some of the unexpected choir stuff. So yeah, glad the band's experimenting and whatnot, but this one just is kind of... there. I would not call it their worst album, but they've done so much better than this before.
-

I'm right there with you. This direction they went in is exactly what I'm into right now, so I could not be happier.
Overall I'm really enjoying the album.
-
Coldplay were on Later... two weeks ago and Chris just cannot sing live. At all.
-
Even though I have come to enjoying the album now this review is hilarious

Nope. Couldn't get past the second paragraph. That was (fucking lol) annoying...
It doesn't bother me that it's negative, or even borderline parodying, it's the whole concept that the word fuck is meant to either be funny or drive a point cause the guy is apparently annoyed by the album. We got it. How could anyone read that? This coming from a guy who uses profanity in almost every discussion I have. It still managed to drop my interest before I got past the intro. Holy hell...talk about overkill.
The funny part is that he's clearly invested in the whole drama of it all. I didn't even know Martin was dating Paltrow... There's just too many shits given for the amount of time hating the fact that he knows what it's all about... Just... Wow. ::)
-
The "fucking" parts are a bit annoying but the golden stuff is written around that. Whatever one man's amusement is another man's shit.
-
That was maybe a bit over the top. Pitchfork's review (https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/19344-coldplay-ghost-stories/) is pretty amazing though.
-
See, now that's pretty spot on; actually read all of it. :lol I do agree that the lyrics are completely cringe-worthy at times, but I'm not usually one to complain about cheesy lyrics unless they're nonsensical or focus on truly mundane shit (see: miley twerkus). I don't think these are specifically bad, and they fit the songs themselves; though there's no denying how campy they are. But hey, apparently the guys hurtin', and he gets it out through some groovy tunes. It's not the most amazing album and it pales in comparison to what most of the musical gods that most of the forum likes accomplish, but it's fun for now. I am a bit disappointed in how short it is though. That's what she said. :sadpanda: :millahhhh /flock'a'birds
-
Does nobody else find it really weird in a kind of voyeuristic way listening to albums which are about one person's private life ?
It's like - nobody gives a shit. I don't even know you.
-
A definite grower. I was listening to it a few nights ago while chilled out as fuck at 2 a.m. and I enjoyed it way more than I did the first time around. So it's probably going to end up being an album I put on when I need to chillax.
-
I'm really digging the album, especially the tracks Midnight, Ink and True love. I'd most likely rank it right behind Rush of blood and X&Y.
-
I've been listening to this for the last days and I love it. It's quite dreamy and intimate to me.
For now, the rank goes:
Viva La Vida
A Rush of Blood
Ghost Stories
Parachutes
Mylo Xyloto
X&Y
-
I'm listening to it again tonight. It's a seriously good album. I think your description of "dreamy and intimate" is spot on. Midnight is breathtakingly beautiful. It's the most perfect song I've heard in a long time. Maybe it's because I've felt exactly that way so many times before. It's such a surreally beautiful and intensely sad feeling, and this song captures it beautifully.
Mylo Xyloto
Ghost Stories
(Prospekt's March)
Viva La Vida
A Rush of Blood to the Head
X&Y
Parachutes (this is still really good)
-

Coldplay is apparently working on a new album already! Chris Martin says it might be their last. The album title will be A Head Full of Dreams.
-
Ghost Stories was their last album :neverusethis:
-
I've finally gotten around to checking out Ghost Stories. I automatically threw the Sky Full of Stars EP and Atlas on the end.
After two and a bit listens, I have a feeling I'll be chopping some tracks out of this, and there's not much that really stands out as great songs rather than just good/very good ones.
-
As you can probably tell from my avatar, I loved Ghost Stories. Album of the year for me. But I can see why it wouldn't be everybody's thing.
Midnight, though. I can't stress strongly enough the importance and excellence of Midnight.
-
I liked about 5 songs from " AROBTTH " and " Fix You " .
That's where my Coldplay enjoyment ends.
-
I'm still impressed by how solid Ghost stories was. Such a consistent, thematic album with a great vibe throughout. Even tracks like Oceans are starting to appeal to me.
-
One thing I have to give this album credit for is it flows like a son of a bitch.
Other than A Sky Full of Stars, which really clashes with the rest of the album, and I'm really not very fond of in general. I've noticed the Coldplay songs I don't like so much are normally ones that just slip by without really asserting themselves (Twisted Logic, X&Y, Up With the Birds, Prospekts March) or the occasional mega-hit oriented track (Clocks, Speed of Sound, Talk). I think ASFOS will be added to that second list. It's too explicitly dancey for me. I get a really bad Call Me Maybe vibe from it.
Other than that, and Another's Arms having probably the most noticeably bad lyrics I've ever heard by this band, everything else is fine, though like I said before, nothing really sounds much better than just fine and makes me go WOW. Magic, Midnight, O and Ghost Story are the slightly stronger tracks, and Atlas is also very good.
-
I like how A Sky full of stars is sandwiched between the two calmest songs on the album, and it's very odd that it's placed as a second to last song on it, very unusual for what became a huge hit single. But I agree on lyrics in Another's arms, they really don't do it for me.
-
This seemed like the most recent Coldplay thread. I'm not really a fan in general, but this new track is gorgeous:
Coloratura:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWUV5-frRU4
Last thing I checked out from them was Viva La Vida, which I thought was a really strong album, but most of their stuff has not landed for me. This sounds really interesting though. Looks like the album is set for an October 15th release.
-
Was just about to post this. I'm really excited. I'm a pretty big fan of the band, and I've always thought they had something like this in them.
Also, just to be explicit to anyone who clicks on this and unsure whether to check it: This is a 10-minute quasi-prog song.
-
Straight up Pink Floyd Brain Damage/Eclipse sounding to me. So, needless to say, I dig it.
-
Did
Did Coldplay just release a Prog song
Well, at least the proggiest song they've done. Sure it's no De-Loused in the Comatorium, but it really shows some Floyd influences all throughout the track. I love it. Probably the best song they've done in years. They were showing some signs of doing these kind of songs in Ghost Stories and Hypnotised (Which was an otherworldly song too), but they really outdid themselves with this one. Everyday Life is a nice album (Not among their best ones though), and I didn't care much for their last single Higher Power, but this... This I dig, a lot. Seeing the tracklist of their next album I noticed Coloratura is by far the longest song on the album, so the other singles might be more in line with a traditional pop song style... But Coldplay has surprised me a lot in the past so I'm hyped to see what this album is like

I honestly loved the 00s output and, barring parts of Ghost Stories, really couldn't get into their 10s output, but I'll still check out a new Coldplay release. Higher Power did nothing for me but Coloratura was pretty interesting.
-
Wait, we haven't had a single post between 2015 and 2021? :omg:
Maybe we've discussed Everyday life in a separate thread, but I would be surprised if we haven't. That was a really good album, my favorite release of theirs after Parachutes. I wasn't sure of Higher power, given that it reminded me of Mylo and A Head full of dreams, which might be my least favorite Coldplay albums. Still, I'm looking forward to the record.

I never really expected that Coldplay will put out a prog rock song one day. Coloratura is surprisingly very good.
-
Coloratura is actually the only good song on the album lol.

Can't say I agree with this. The rest is very poppy and overproduced, yes. But there are some catchy tunes on there. I only heard it once though. But the collab with Jacob Collier is great. And sure, Coloratura is among the best things the band has done ever. Just a beautiful piece of music.

Include me as one of those who was very surprised at the 10 min track closer. First listen through and it sounds almost like a poppier higher energy version of Ghost Stories. Will need more listens.

Yeah after a second listen it has 3 or 4 decent pop songs but the only song that is very good imo is Coloratura.

Kind of disappointing given how strong Coloratura is. May still check this out anyway.

I think that's how I've felt about every Coldplay album released after 2010. :lol Ghost Stories seemed a lot more chill than the others, and I haven't really given Everyday Life a decent listen, but Mylo Xyloto and Head Full of Dreams are SO poppy compared to their early stuff that it kind of took away what I loved about 00s Coldplay.
Collabs with Selena Gomez? BTS? Chainsmokers? Are they just trying to stay relevant? *shrug* As long as they're enjoying themselves, it's cool. I just don't find myself as into this sound as I did with the first four albums.

Coldplay is one of my favorite pop bands, but this has always bugged me. Since Mylo Xyloto they've released at least one song per album or EP with a popular artist at the time the album was released (2012=Rihanna, 2014=Avicii, 2016=Beyoncé, 2017=Chainsmokers, 2021=BTS, with 2019 being the only exception), I know they're a pop band and all that but they really really like to ride on the popularity of a successful artist or band. It's like they don't believe they can be popular enough by themselves.
On the album itself I did like Humankind, Human Heart, People of the Pride, Infinity, and of course Coloratura which is the best song on the album by a long mile. Got to say I expected a bit more and got a bit misled by Coloratura, but it's still a decent album. Not better than Everyday Life IMO. For now I'm putting it above Mylo Xyloto and AHFOD just for that song alone.
-
I listened to the album without knowing who contributed to it. Of course I recognized Jacob Collier. But for example, I loved Let Somebody Go and thought "oh nice, it's a duet with a woman". Later I found out it's Selena Gomez. Am I supposed to like this song less now? I honestly don't care who they collaborate with, as long as I like it ;)

I am only on my third listen and it's still early for a detailed review, but what is sort of apparent is that, every time Coldplay releases an album that is different and original (Viva la vida, Ghost stories, Everyday life), they follow it up with a safer, poppier album that should crack into the mainstream easier than the predecessor. The follow up, to me, always pales in comparison a bit.

I realized that too! I usually like the more "experimental" ones more (of the ones you mentioned especially Viva La Vida). That being said, I love A Head Full Of Dreams, too.

Anyone else likes Biutyful from the new album? I feel like I’m the only person who likes it. The vocal effect is a bit annoying but I think it has really catchy vocal melodies and a nice production.

Apart from the vocal effect, I also think it's a good song! Maybe I have to listen to it some more to get used to the effect.

Sadly it looks like Coldplay are turning into one of those acts who have a ton of co writers, guest (pop) vocalists and producers on each album.
I liked a lot of the first two albums but after that nope. Shame.
-
Coldplay is that band I want to LOVE so badly, but I just can't. The first two records are gold for sure, but they always seem like they are trying too hard to be liked (or U2, one of the two, or both). I have all their records (and their b-sides) up through Ghost Stories, but there's just so little enthusiasm for me at this point. Every time I think of Coldplay, I now think of "Gwyneth Paltrow" and that's not what you want in your favorite band(s), IMO.
-
Agree 100% on the trying to be U2. Their whole stage presence live is based on U2. With their extended intros whilst Chris talks to the crowd.
I even saw him and Johnny do the whole Bono and The Edge face off where Bono is on the floor and Edge is standing over him with the guitar.
Plus getting Brian Eno to produce their albums. Only trouble is - Chris is not a great singer and U2 never had a ton of guest writers.
-
I'd say that for me it's the first four albums that are gold. Parachutes and AROBTTH are really moody piano rock albums, X&Y feels like the flipside of the coin to them, being more high energy and "rock"-like while still feeling like a follow-up. Viva La Vida is the first "experimental" one to me (Mladen's right, they DO start alternating between pop-friendly and experimental albums at this point). I love it. It feels like you're listening to a concept album taking place in the late 1800s or something.
Mylo Xyloto is where things started to wobble for me. Ghost Stories is good though. Nice and mellow. Hated A Head Full of Dreams because that took the poppier sound of MX and went full hog with it. The tempo of the songs on those two records feels... faster(?) than the old stuff?
I actually listened to all of Everyday Life for the first time a few days back, and immediately followed it up with the new one. Everyday Life kind of gives me the same vibe as VLV, but nothing on it is all that memorable to me. And Music of the Spheres seems to follow along with MX and AHFOD, but again, not all that interesting, besides "Pride of the People" and "Coloratura" which completely blindsided me. A 10-minute Coldplay song? And it's great?! Fantastic!
-
I'm weird, but to me the sweet spot is Viva La Vida through Ghost Stories. The songwriting is just there on those—including Mylo Xyloto, which just has one killer song after another. If you think of it as just "the synthpop album," you might miss some of the great ballads, too, like Us Against the World. AHFOD was a definite step down, and I haven't spent much time with the last two.
-
I'm kinda the opposite of most I guess, I like the first two albums but don't love them. Yes they have some amazing and iconic tracks on them but Viva onwards for me the albums keep getting better and better. I'm also liking this cadence of switching between experimental and pop rock albums. I have no problem too with the collaborations either, I think my favorite tracks are the ones they collaborated on. HumanKind has a Van Halen Jump vibe and feel to it. They have some real bangers on this album. It's settled in kinda nice now. Probably one of my top 3 albums at this point.

Viva La Vida is great and the only Coldplay album I’ve really liked. Parachutes was pretty good too, but not something I ever revisited much. Hated A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Okay, I am going to post in this thread since it's the first that came up in the search.
I was at work and Humankind came up on the playlist I was listening to. My coworker was enjoying it and asked me who it was, I told him "I know, I'm jamming it too", and saw it was Coldplay. We were both like, "Oh, cool." After work, I went home and looked the song up. Found out about the album "concept" for Music of The Spheres, then I decided to listen to it entirely.
I went in blind, besides Humankind, and I really enjoyed it a lot. I didn't realize until I looked up the music videos, that I have heard some of these, but never knew it was Coldplay who sang them, besides the one with the muppets, but I never payed much attention to it when it first came out.
I think Infinity Sign is one of the most uplifting songs I have heard.
I honestly think it'd be awesome if the band were to play this album in it's entirety live. Maybe, that will get me to see them live. Although, I would maybe see them if they ended up playing Coloratura live.
-
They were playing the entire album during the 1st part of the tour and ending with Coloratura IIRC. Then they dropped it from their set and closed the set with Biutyful instead. I saw them last year in June in Tampa which was the last night of the NA tour. I had nosebleeds but the show was still so good and had a ton of fun. The new songs are amazing live and this new album is probably my 2nd favorite or heck even my favorite with Mylo Xyloto a close 2nd.
It was an amazing night with the full moon in the background, the visuals were spectacular, they announced 4 West coast NA dates and they got sold out right away so they added a couple more nights. I wonder if they're going to add more as part of the 2nd leg of the NA tour.
They have a few professionally recorded shows on youtube from the tour, so you can get an idea of the presentation.

Interesting bit I just read is that is somewhat of a 3 album plan about Music. 1st part was the planets(spheres), next album is to be called Moon Music, not sure what the 3rd part will be about.
