Title: Why do some DT fans.........
Post by: redfish71 on October 22, 2011, 09:10:51 AM
go to concerts and harass the sound/light guys about Mike Portnoy not being in the band?  I went to the Pompano show last night......The most fun DT show I have been to.  I met one of the sound guys and he and I struck up a conversation about Mangini and he told me how lots of fans were harassing them about Portnoy not being in the band.  Why?  Hell, if why even buy a ticket if that's the way you feel?

The entire band was awesome last night!!  Mangini is a maniac and it was so enjoyable to watch.  James is a totally different person on stage now.  And that's a positive thing!!!!  They all looked like they were having so much fun together and that's something I hadnt seen before in their shows.

Rock On, DT!!!!  If I didnt have to work this weekend I would have gone to Clearwater tonight and Orlando tomorrow and seen them again!!!!!! :yarr

I don't even know where to start with the stupidity of doing that, for the reasons you mentioned and more, so just a massive WTF to all of that.

Well, I mean - it's obviously the sound guy's fault that they broke up. And is he even sorry for what he did? Nope. Not. One. Bit. Look at him... all high and mighty behind his mixing board. Smug sonofabitch.

i literally cant understand the people that dont like this new version of the band. you have to be a HUGE MP fan, to not want mangini there. Saw DT 5 times and  this latest one was lightyears ahead of the previous ones.

You know what it is? A recent poll here showed that most of us are musicians IIRC. People who are not simply have no fucking clue how bands work. You know it because you've experienced band dynamics. The closest thing most people can compare it to is their job, or maybe a team if they played sports. They really don't get that the light guy, the manager, the dude selling T-shirts, have nothing to do with decisions made by the actual members of the band.

Case in point - I played in a cover band for years. One night the guitar player was suffering through a stomach virus and had to leave after the 2nd set. We were done for the night, obviously. Some guy was dying for us to play a Van Halen song, kept going on and on about it. Didn't understand why we couldn't do it without a guitar player. Didn't understand why the bass player couldn't just play the song instead. Told me he "played a little" and maybe I could teach it to him. Asked the sound guy if HE could jump up there and play it . On and on. No. Fucking. Clue.

You'd think that someone who likes DT would be interested in music enough to know some basic things. Like that the light guy probably never even met MP, and even if they're best friends, he doesn't go to band meetings. But they often don't get any of that. They think anyone remotely associated with the band has an equal say in what's happening.

Another case in point: I'm buddies with Ben Moody, the ex-guitar player/founder of Evanescence. 4 years after he left the band, I run into an old high school friend who knows this, and he tells me, "You should tell them to bring him back, they're not as good since he left." Without any concept of how this break-up occurred, what's happened in the interim, and assuming that my opinion carries any weight at all with "them" 4 years after the fact. I've had dozens of people tell me that I should "tell Amy" or "tell Evanescence" such and such, assuming we chat everyday because, ya know, I used to hang out with those guys 10 years ago.

There's a complete disconnect with reality, like bands exist in some frozen dimension of time where they can interchange members, record labels, etc. without real life happening in between. I think people like that assume these musicians are like TV characters that cease to exist between episodes.

totally agree, WS!  people have become disconnected with reality.

i just dont get the point of yelling "Mike Portnoy!" between songs at a DT show.  or standing in front of JP holding a iphone, videotaping, like a zombie and not even really enjoying the show.  put yourself in their shoes.  it's got to be kinda kooky and the yelling is totally disrespectful.  MM is helping to carry on something we all love with the passion and enthusiasm that we listen to them with.  Everyone should be thanking him AND the band, for that matter.

I have to admit I did something like this one time, and afterwards I felt bad about it. At a Queensryche concert (Jones Beach, HITNF tour), I screamed out "Play Metropolis!" when they started Silent Lucidity.

Seemed like a good idea at the time. :blush

i can see why some fans aren't into the new lineup.  MP and D.T. were synonymous for decades.  some folks just can't accept that drastic amount of change without having negative feelings towards the new product, no matter how good it is.

This is unfathomable to me. ???
I'm actually cracking up while reading this thread.

Are we absolutely positive that is what the sound guy said?    Fans were harassing THEM, THE SOUND ENGINEERS, for MP not being in the band?

Like, What the Hell?...

We Dream Theater fans are really a special breed aren't we?   My god...

Not a reason to go after a sound guy, regardless.

In the interest of fairness, I want to point something out.

Some people who work at concert venues - be them light guys or sound guys or security guards or whatever - act like they're hot shots who get to talk to all the bands and hang out backstage all the time, just because they work there.  I'm not saying all sound guys do this, but I can confidently state that some do, because my brother did when he worked at a venue.  So, while the idea that all of the crew at a venue is supposed to be in close with all of the bands is silly, some fans actually get that silly idea FROM people who work at venues.

Just putting that out there.

Then don't go to the concerts with the new lineup, and don't be childish enough to heckle the new member or the sound guy (like either are to blame for Portnoy not being in the band anymore).

I have a feeling anyone ignorant enough to harass the sound guy about it probably wasn't even aware that MP had left the band until they went to the show. I'm not sure how that's even possible in this day and age, but it's either that, or I'm just at a complete loss imagining how someone wastes their money going to a show they don't seem to want to see. ???

Honestly, they would have to be living under a rock not to notice MP has left the band. With all the drama headlines, press releases, drummer auditions, and hundreds of posts about the new DT album and drummer, it's impossible for someone to miss the whole situation.

because they're idiots who have no social skills, so they don't realize how stupid and rude they are being. Funny enough, it's not too hard to find DT fans with no social skills.

Maybe some of these fans (have been living under a rock) and don't even realize M.P. is out of the band until they get to the venue..
And the sound guys are the most accessible to whinge too!

Oh, come on, WTF!  Talk about an elitist view!  I would have had to play in a band to understand the inter-workings?  Your anecdotal evidence of some drunk idiot not understanding why you couldn't play a VH song without a guitarist means that all people who haven't been in a band are idiots?  It was pretty stupid to talk to a lighting guy about why MP left the band, but that doesn't mean everyone who can't play an instrument feels the same way.  I've loved technical music for years and the only thing I can "play" is my voice!  And i wouldn't ask the t-shirt guy a question about the band (or pay $35 for a damn t-shirt either).  We've seen bands have fights for years, watched band interviews for years, of course most of us know that band members sometimes have issues.  I'm actually in awe of them for being able to stay together for years.  Most people couldn't handle that.

It may be that most people on this board have picked up a guitar or stick at one time or other (or lied about it in a poll), but that isn't the same as playing in a touring band with a worldwide audience.  Nobody sitting around me in Atlanta could play anything but air guitar, but I heard no complaints about Mangini.
