Title: Joseph's Top 50 Albums!!
Post by: JosephAOI on September 26, 2011, 03:11:35 PM
Hey guys! It's been a while since I've been on here. Been busy with schoolwork and guitar and all but thats another story for a different time (or never).

Anyway, my Top 50 Albums is probably going to piss off a fair few people but hopefully enlighten some to some great music they might have otherwise not heard. As a note, I got into Prog only about a year ago so that's more towards the top so be patient.

Here's the start!

50. The Sufferer And The Witness- Rise Against

This is one of those kind of albums that I'm not really too much into anymore but it was an album that I loved at one point in time. It's full of some of the best punk/alternative/whatever.

Favorite Songs: Bricks, Behind Closed Doors, The Good Left Undone.

49. Follow The Reaper- Children Of Bodom

This is a great album. Every song has some great guitarwork and some really cool keyboard parts. It's also pretty impressive to note that Lead Guitarist Alexi Laiho also is the Vocalist in CoB.

Favorite Songs: Children Of Decadence, Kissing The Shadows

48. Ascendancy- Trivium

Anyone who's listened to Trivium knows that they're one of the best bands to have emerged from the whole Metalcore scene. Matt Heafy's huge screams and singing coupled with his and guitarist Corey Beaulieu's leads have made a big name for Trivium that continues to grow. This is a great album with some excellent songwriting and contains my favorite use of harmonization (on pretty much every solo)

Favorite Songs: Drowned And Torn Asunder, The End Of Everything, Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr

47. Iowa- Slipknot

I love this album. To me, Slipknot has always had this air about them of just pure aggression. It's unique how their music isn't really 'heavy' in the typical sense but when you get into it, theres just this primal rage about them, especially shown in this album. Also, the pure emotion in Corey Taylor's voice throughout his career is unbelievable.

Favorite Songs: Disasterpiece, I Am Hated, New Abortion, Skin Ticket

46. War Is The Answer- Five Finger Death Punch

This is known to be a pretty 'Mainstream' metal album to most people but what I think a lot of people overlook about WITA is that is very well-written. FFDP is my go-to band when I want something heavy but also really melodic and catchy.

Favorite Songs: Dying Breed, Canto 34, Succubus

Nothing too special right now but that's all for this post!
Glad to be back by the way! :D

Interesting list, I'm not big into those bands besides a bit of Rise Against :)

Rise Against is pretty awesome. I used to really love them, particularly that album.

Following... just for shits and giggles.  I suspect I will have heard of less than 10 of your albums.  So far, 1/5 (Trivium).

The only album I've heard (and just a little bit) is Rise Against. I have to check these albums out.

These honestly aren't the greatest albums but theyre worth a listen to if you're a metal guy. It doesn't help that I don't know as many albums as most people on here.

UPDATE:

45. Evangelion- Behemoth

This album is heavy. Heavy and dark. It's like that everything-going-crazy-at-once part of black metal had sex with the technical precision and vocal/drum/guitar style of death metal. Behemoth is one of those bands that sounds cool. Putting their writing, guitar tone, vocal style and all aside, the music has a real energy  to it that you feel. Also, they have a monster stage presence and put on a great live show.

Favorite Songs: Ov Fire And The Void, The Seed Of I, Lucifer

44. Shadows Are Security- As I Lay Dying

This is one of those albums that a lot of people hate. A lot of people seem to hate on As I Lay Dying because they're metalcore but what a lot of people don't take into account is that AILD are one of the main bands that popularized the genre. Every new metalcore album that has come out in the past 4 or 5 years, you could probably hear some of this album in it. There's some great riffs, excellent vocals, and some cool solos to top it all off.

Favorite Songs: Confined, The Darkest Nights, Through Struggle, Morning Waits

43. A Sense Of Purpose- In Flames

The thing this album has that makes it really cool is a sense of groove. That, mixed with In Flames' sense of melody and vocals, this album flies by. It's one of those feelgood metal albums in my opinion.

Favorite Songs: The Mirror's Truth, Alias, Drenched In Fear

42. Invincible- Two Steps From Hell

Two Steps From Hell isn't exactly a band but that doesn't stop them from making awesome music. It's two guys (IIRC) and they do music for movies and video games like Harry Potter, The Dark Knight and Avatar. Knowing that fact now, you know this is going to be a truly epic album, and honestly, that's all I think I can say about it. It's epic.

Favorite Songs: All of them.

41. The Perfect Element Pt. 1- Pain Of Salvation

And here's where the getting pissed at me will probably start. I love this album, really. It's supremely well done, very very very well thought out and superbly written. Unfortunately though, it just doesn't tickle my fancy as much as the albums above it.

Favorite Songs: Used, Ashes, King Of Loss

40. Solace- Jean Baudin

Look at that album cover. Look how many strings that guy has. This album is one track of him playing an 11 string bass. It's incredible. LISTEN.

Favorite Songs: Mare Nubium, Krackatoa, Transcend

I know most 'trve' In Flames fans hate it but it was the first album by them I heard so it's what I think of them as. Can't really get into their older albums  :-\

Ascendency and Iowa are both great albums. The former is an underrated, overlooked metal masterpiece, and Iowa is probably the heaviest nu metal album ever recorded.

Behemoth is pretty cool too. Some interesting picks so far.

A Sense of Purpose is probably around when I lost interest for In Flames.
I'll agree that The Chosen Pessimist is good, but the rest just sounds very samey to me sadly. :\

UPDATE:
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/_-owhS7ArDv8/STk6g9TKenI/AAAAAAAAAII/HsXv5wDLsxA/s320/The+Faceless+-++Akeldama.jpg)
39. Akeldama- The Faceless

Fun fact: This is the first album ever released by Sumerian Records. I think thats becausse The Faceless is a very interesting, innovative band. They're very metal, indeed, but they have these really rich, fun melodic sections that just grip you. This is a really fun album and the only complaint I have about it is the production, and how there aren't enough clean vocals.

Favorite Songs: Pestilence, Horizons Of Choas Pt. 2, Leica

38. Are You Dead Yet?- Children Of Bodom

This was my favorite album for a very long time. I was huge into the whole thrashy-melodic death metal kinda stuff CoB did for a long time and for some reason, I liked this album most. I feel like Alexi's playing here was a little more well thought out and he wrote more to fit the songs as opposed to show off a little bit. His singing has also improved a lot on this album I think.

Favorite Songs: In Your Face, Trashed Lost & Strungout, We're Not Gonna Fall

37. SikTh- The Trees Are Dead And Dried Out... Wait For Something Wild

SikTh is one of those bands that came to underground metal fame fast. They're considered one of the most influential bands on the bands in the whole 'Djent' movement, inspiring guys like Misha from Periphery. This album is so well written, it's stupifying. There's just something about this album that grabs you and makes you want to just keep listening all the way through; especially like the end of Can't We All Dream and Tupelo and the two Emerson songs. At first, it seems like nonsense and crazyness but upon a few more spins, you get to hear all the intricate detail to every song.

Favorite Songs: Scent Of The Obscene, Skies Of The Millennium Night, Peep Show, Can't We All Dream

36. Andy McKee- Art Of Motion

This album is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. This album, all one track (Like Jean Baudin) of acoustic guitar is done by one of the most gifted players I can think of. In a few songs (Most notably Drifting), McKee plays lead, rhythm, and precussion all at the same time on the same instrument and makes it work fantastically.

Favorite Songs: Art Of Motion, Drifting, For My Father, Rylynn

35. Cynic- Traced In Air

This is a really cool, out-there sort of album. It's weird because of Paul Masvidal's vocals, which sound like they're constantly going through a synth or some vocal processor (maybe they are?) and his unique sense of riffing and melody.

Favorite songs: Evolutionary Sleeper, Integral Birth, Adam's Murmur

34. Scars On Broadway- Scars On Broadway

Scars On Broadway is, as most people know, what Daron and John did when System Of A Down went on hiatus. I, for one, thought this was an incredibly good release when most people had really high expectations for 1/2 of one of the biggest bands in recent years. Daron riffs and sings through this album just like he did with System but with a bit of a curve. It's a lot more approached as a Hard-rock album as opposed to SOAD's more metal approach. Also, Daron's vocals are (obviously) more present than on a System record.

Favorite Songs: Funny, World Long Gone, Chemicals, Whoring Streets

UPDATE:
33. Animals As Leaders- Animals As Leaders

Animals As Leaders is one of those bands that just blows your mind the first time youlisten to them. Tosin Abasi's virtuosity and general talent is incredibly impressive as it already is, but given the fact he plays an 8-string, there's a bit more 'wow' factor. This album is an instrumental album, but in a way, it doesn't quite feel like it. You get done with the album but yet you'll find yourself humming some of the leads and riffs later.

Favorite Songs: Tempting Time, On Impulse, Song Of Solomon

32. Eyes Set To Kill- Reach

This is another metalcore/punk album that has a fair bit of 'emo' in it. Probably my favorite female-fronted band, ESTK makes music that is great to listen to pretty much whenever: On a drive, hanging out, when you're outside, etc. and it's just fun music.

Favorite Songs: Reach, Darling, Behind These Eyes

31. Between The Buried And Me- Alaska

This album is great. There's so much that BTBAM put into all of their albums that it's almost hard to follow sometimes. There's a lot of memorable stuff on this album too: All of Selkies, and a bunch of riffs scattered around elsewhere. I'd definitely consider them one of my favorite bands, too.

Favorite Songs: Selkies: The Endless Obsession, Backwards Marathon

30. The Faceless- Planetary Duality

Ah, another (the other) Faceless record. This one, however, is a lot better than their first. It's a lot better written: Parts are thought out better, vocals are more evenly spaced, and there are a bit more clean vocals. The place where this album REALLY shines though, is Michael Keene's amazing guitar work. A lot of times, you hear him play some really fast, crazy kind of stuff, but then you get to his incredible Jazz-Fusion influenced solos. Great album.

Favorite Songs: The Ancient Covenant, Coldly Calculated Design, Xenochrist

29. Coheed And Cambria- Second Stage Turbine Blade

("Finally an album we all know!" Yells DTF.org) Yeah, yeah, I know. My list is about 80-90% metal, but hell, it's what I love. Anyways, this is one of those albums that aren't very metal (Although, it is the most metal Coheed record) but it's amazing. Claudio's vocals on this album sound so raw and emotional and all the playing sounds super tight. Every song on here is full of catchy melodies and vocals that anyone can get into.

Favorite Songs: Devil In Jersey City, Everything Evil, Delirium Trigger

28. Here Comes The Kraken- Here Comes The Kraken

This album is fantastic. Full of crazy shreddy guitar work everywhere and some ominously heavy vocals. This is one of those 'diamond in the rough' metalcore/deathcore albums. HCTK were nowhere near the front of the scene but they had one of the best albums in the whole scene. The truly best thing about this album though is the guitar tone. Listen to it to know what I mean.

Favorite Songs: Don't Fail Me Darko, Into The Slaughter Basement, From The Deepest Darkness

That's all for today! Next update will be getting into the best stuff!!

27. The Mars Volta- Frances The Mute

This album has some of the best vocals I've ever heard on it. Cedric Bixler-Zavala has the most incredible voice and range and it works so perfectly with Omar Rodríguez-López's weird guitarwork. I know a lot of people actually don't like this album but I really don't see why. The only beef i have with this album is all the super long intros and outros.

Favorite Songs: Cygnus....Vismund Cygnus, The Widow

26. Dream Theater- Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory

OMG! A Dream Theater album?! On DTF?!?!?! Yeah, I'm that kid that joined a forum for a band that he wasn't too into but thought the people were cool. Then I got into Dream Theater. I don't think I really need to talk about this album though cause you all know it.

Favorite Songs: Fatal Tragedy, Beyond This Life, Home

25. Veil Of Maya- [id]

This album is crazy. Veil Of Maya is the band that really threw in my face the idea of mind-boggling syncopation and what 1 guitarist can do with a pitch sifter and looper. This album is full of great riffing and some really interesting phrasing that really tugs at your ear the firt time or two you hear it.

Favorite Songs: Mowgli, Namaste, Codex

24. The Number Twelve Looks Like You- Mongrel

This album is an incredibly difficult album for a lot of people to grasp; Especially non-musicians. The way TNTLLY use time signature and syncopation and unusual intrumentation is so hard for me to wrap my head around sometimes. It's not really just Math Metal/Rock, but theres a lot of Jazz and Funk and even Salsa. I don't really get how they had the idea to write something like this. But it's incredible.

Favorite Songs: Sleeping With The Fishes, See?; Grandfather

23. System Of A Down- Steal This Album!

This is probably System Of A Down's best album. Why do I say that? Because the song structure is incredible and the riffs and vocals are SO incredibly well done. This is unfortunately probably their least-known for some reason but it includes some of their best-written songs.

Favorite Songs: Mr. Jack, Innervision, Highway Song, Roulette

22. Born Of Osiris- The New Reign

This album is one of my "Top 10 best debut albums" because it came out and was so well written and there is such great musicianship in every song that no one could believe these guys were only about 18 when it was recorded. This album also gets a bad rep because they were considered Deathcore but they were definitely more Progressive than any Deathcore band at the time.

Favorite Songs: Empires Erased, Abstract Art, Bow Down

21. Opeth- Blackwater Park

Everyone already knows what's amazing about this album and how truly great it is so I'm gonna bother with a write-up.

Favorite Songs: THE DRAPERY FALLS, Dirge For November, Blackwater Park

20. Meshuggah- Nothing

Meshuggah is the band that practically invented groove. This album perfectly illustrates that (although not quite as well as Catch Thirty-Three) but this album has some of the coolest songs and grooves on it.

Favorite Songs: Stengah, Straws Pulled At Random, Spasm

19. System Of A Down- Mezmerize

I hate how I can never really decide which album I like more between this and STA! They both have 2 of my favorite 4 system songs and both are excruciatingly well-written. My two on here are B.Y.O.B. and Solider Side (Although the full song is technically on Hypnotize) and my two from STA! (if you were wondering) are Mr. Jack and Roulette.

Favorite Songs: B.Y.O.B., Violent Pornography, Sad Statue

18. As I Lay Dying- The Powerless Rise

This is a really cool album to listen to for people who know AILD's background in their music. Because they were one of the 'leaders' of the metalcore scene, and they realized how it all sounded the same, they started trying to branch out a little bit and bit a little more different. There are some really fun, cool riff and grooves on here that everyone should be able to enjoy.

Favorite Songs: Parallels, Anger And Apathy, The Blinding Of False Light

17. Scale The Summit- The Collective

Letters, this is the band I was talking about that took a lot of influence from Cynic in a way. Their another intrumental band but they keep things so interesting and fun that you don't even realize it. The motto that they have is "Their strings are voices" and it really sounds like it when you listen to them. Definitely my favorite instrumental band and worth a listen from ever single person on here.

Favorite Songs: Whales, The Levitated, Apenglow, Gallows

16. Coheed And Cambria- In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3

Again with this album, everyone already knows why it's so great so I don't really need to ay anything about it here.

Favorite Songs: Blood Red Summer, A Favor House Atlantic, The Light & The Glass

Scale the Summit has been on my list for a long time, especially the album that came out this year (?) which I remember got some really good reviews.

Oh well, some other good albums as well, guess I should check them out finally. :P

Cool to see a more metal top 50 list. Love that Born of Osiris album like it was my child, Veil of Maya pretty sweet too. Prefer Carving Desert Canyons to The Collective, but it's still good. But old SOAD = best SOAD

You're going to LOVE the rest of my list. And Old SOAD for energy, New SOAD for songwriting.

First saying that Steal This Album! is 'probably SOADs best album' and throwing another SOAD in the next update isn't really convincing..
Still, I'm interested to see what you have in store for the last albums.

Ah, but this is my favorite albums, not the bands that I like's best albums.

UPDATE:

15. Circles- The Compass

Circles is one of those band's that's another part of the whole 'Djent' scene going on right now, but they're one of the more original ones I think. The 'formula' they use in songwriting is similar to most other 'djent' bands but somehow, they make things work in their own way, mixing ambient syncopated low-tuned guitars and incredible vocals.

Favorite Songs: Clouds Are Gathering, Ruins

14. The Number Twelve Looks Like You- Put On Your Rosy Red Glasses

This album is insane and I mean that in the truest sense of the word. It's impossible for me to describe anything about this album without you hearing it so, go listen to it and understand.

Favorite Songs: If These Bullets Could Talk, Civeta Dei

13. Protest The Hero- Kezia

Kezia is probably my favorite concept album (along with Still Life) becaue not only does it have a great story, but it has incredible music to back it up. Kezia is filled with crazy guitar hooks and great vocals (Like Protest always does) and is structured really different than a lot of their stuff with songs like 'Turn Soonest To The Sea'

Favorite Songs: Blindfolds Aside, She Who Mars The Skin Of Gods, A Plateful Of Our Dead

12. Coheed And Cambria- Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Vol. 1

Again, you all know what's so awesome about this album so I really don't need to say it.

Favorite Songs: The Suffering, The Willing Well: I, II, III, IV

11. Opeth- Ghost Reveries

Ghost Reveries (In a low voice). You know, I honestly really didn't like this album for a long time. It was only when I had listened to BWP about 50 times that I decided to give this a whole-hearted listen and I loved it. The riffs and cleans on here stick in my head for so long and are so sing-songy that it's undenyably my favorite Opeth album.

Favorite Songs: Ghost Of Perdition, Harlequin Forest, Hours Of Wealth

Not quite up my musical alley, but decent updates.

And just so you know, not "everyone" knows how awesome these albums are.  For those of us with different musical interests, it's nice to know why others think and feel the way they do about their favorite albums.  If they are part of your favorite 20 albums ever, I'd think you would have something specific to say about why.

Just sayin

This.  Your write-ups are woefully insufficient to attract attention to bands people aren't familiar with.  Just being honest.

I know. I suck at describing music that people are unfamiliar with. My top 50 is just for the hell of it and for people who share a lot of the similar music who'll listen to a few of these albums regardless of my shitty write-ups.

TOP 10!

10. Guthrie Govan- Erotic Cakes

I don't really know where to start with this album. Guthrie's skills in any song he's ever written or performed has always completely blown my mind. He's an absolutely fantastic player and one of the greatest guitarists to have ever lived. (The thing about using that expression is that it's a cliche obviously, but this is a case where it can truly be applied) Anyone who can appreciate an instrumental blues-fusion-shred album would almost definitely agree. The absolute coolest thing about Guthrie though is that when he writes a song, it has maybe 3 or 4 set riffs. The entire rest of the song is improvised every time he plays it. Just go listen to a couple different versions of "Waves" or "Wonderful Slippery Thing" live.

Favorite Songs: Waves, Wonderful Slippery Thing, Fives

9. Red Seas Fire- Red Seas Fire

It's hard a lot of times, to find great music in a scene filled with copycats. Right now the big trend in Metal (More specificly, Progressive Metal) is Djent. Originated by Meshuggah and propelled to fame by Periphery, it's been popping up in Progressive Metal forums and such a lot in recent years. Red Seas Fire manages to do an album that is fresh, but still holding to the style and making it great. Guitarist Nolly grooves through these songs like no other and offers some incredible clean ambient parts such as on The Recovery and some great solos like on Timeframes. On top of the amazing instruments, you get an absolutely mind-blowing vocalist with a voice that changes the music into something completely different and evokes incredible emotion.

Favorite Songs: Epinephrine, The Recovery, Cipher

That's all for now! Hope you liked these write-ups a little better!  :D

Gridlink's newest album Orphan is 12 songs but clocks just over 12 minutes.
Its not really length that defines what's an LP or EP really.
But don't get me wrong, I like Red Sea Fire.

There's no official rules to these lists, only Nick's quasi-official album of the year thread.  I don't see the harm in including an EP.  EP's make up about 1% of the music market, it's not like including them will cause the Sun to collapse or anything.

UPDATE:

8. Protest The Hero- Fortress

Fortress is, at it's most basic, what I would call a Prog shred album. Fast paced, intricate riffing and leadwork is interspersed with Rody Walker's incredible vocals using his spectacular range and voice. The thing that makes this album really stand out though is that every musician on here is performing at their absolute high point and to the best of their abilities. You can really hear how much creativity went into giving every instrument parts where they would really shine (Sequioa Throne comes to mind) and how interesting they make all of these parts sound and stand out. This album is a MUST for anyone into bands like The Human Abstract, The Number Twelve Looks Like You, etc and really anyone interested in some great proggy shred with excellent vocals.

Favorite Songs: The Dissentience, Sequoia Throne, Wretch

And this is where I will probably lose any credibility  :P

7. Dream Theater- Train Of Thought

The first that's probably coming to your mind right now is probably "TOT, WHAT THE FUCK?" but yes, I absolutely LOVE this album. It was the first DT album I ever really got into. I remember laying in bed at like 4 AM just thinking "Eh, I'll give Dream Theater a try for once" and listening to it through my headphones in the dark, having my mind absolutely blown. This is typically considered DT's heaviest album (And, as you should know, this is a very metal list and I am a very metal guy) but it's got some of the greatest riffs, clean parts and solos Petrucci has ever written in my opinion. Stuff like the opening and main riffs in 'Endless Sacrifice', Every riff and the solo of 'In The Name Of God', the main riff in As I Am, and the chorus in 'Honor Thy Father' are some of my absolute favorite Dream Theater moments ever. I also really believe that this is a very overlooked album becaue it seems like most hardcore DT fans just hear a generic metal album and write it off as such but I feel like it contains some of the most incredible parts they've written.

Favorite Songs: All of them

By the way, are my write ups a little more entertaining now?

Nothing terribly wrong with "first album" love, I rank FII higher than most people because of it.

But you're terribly wrong, unless the top six are all DT, and even then you're still slightly wrong

Better write ups though.  I actually now have an inkling what to expect from Protest the Hero.

Protest The Hero seems to be a very talented band. I'm not a fan of cookie monster growls at all for the most part so that throws me a good bit when the singer switches it up on a dime. I'll have to delve into their stuff a little more to get a true feel but I liked Sequoia Throne quite a bit.

I do feel TOT is underrated in the DT catalog and I really like it myself.  :tup

Woo! More love for ToT!

6. Periphery- Periphery

Periphery is one of those extremely innovative bands that after they get a little popularity, everyone starts copying. As I mentioned earlier, they're the main band that propelled the whole 'djent' thing to popularity in the underground metal scene but not for no reason. Periphery is an extremely talented band, both technically and even more so, as composers. Misha Mansoor, the main person responsible behind Periphery writes up and incredible mix of heavy technical progressive metal on here with some serious influence from SikTh, Meshuggah, Allan Holdsworth, Guthrie Govan, and more. An interesting example of this is in the song 'Buttersnips' where Misha mixes a heavy, SikTh-type groove with a Holdsworth-type legao run. A great album for any time.

Favorite Songs: Letter Experiment, All New Materials, Icarus Lives!, Racecar
