Well this IS the fastest guitarist poll. Not favourite guitarist who happens to be fast. :lol

I bought his album years ago. Very fast tasteless shredder. Rubbish album but there was a cover of Paint It Black that was very good, certainly better than the Stones version.

The poll is falling prey to popularity bias. People are likely to vote for guitarists they've actually heard, thus Petrucci is rather unlikely to win considering even my grandpa knows who Steve Vai is and thinks he's the fastest, and he doesn't even listen to rock or metal music so he's never heard of JP. There's no way Vai is faster than JP (though whether or not he's 'better' is up for debate in my opinion).

I voted for JP for some reason, but he's definitely not the fastest on that list.

I had to teach Batio how to use a hand dryer  :lol

well obviously a7x fans are doing what the thread is asking for DT to do. JP isnt the fastest, but he's my favorite so i voted him anyway

Useless poll is useless.  May as well be Justin Bieber fans.

Yeah. No way synester and vai are faster than petrucci. Of course, Petrucci isn't the fastest on the list either. Stupid poll though

That poll is so wrong. Jeff Beck? Jimmy Hendrix? Les Paul? Why the fuck are those guys in a fastest guitarist poll?

The only thing I don't understand is... Where is Kurt Cobain in this poll?

Did anyone watch the video of John Taylor doing Flight of the bumblebee at 600 bpm?
Just.............Wow :o

If the poll is asking who the fastest is then obviously he wins kinda automatically, seeing as he is the world record holder. It seems to be more 'who is your favourite that can play fast' so I voted Petrucci, naturally. Surprised not to see Michael Romeo in there though

I voted Al Di Meola. Seen him several times in the last 20 years including just a few months ago. Even though he's went mostly acoustic as of late, he's still got the speed he had in the 70s on electric in concert, just in shorter bursts.

Stupid poll though. They would have to hook up to some kind of meter in order to crown the real winner. A popularity contest doesn't determine jack.

I'll vote Chet Atkins.  Finger-pickin-licious.

Most polls that follow this format fall prey to popularity bias.

How is this a poll? Isn't there some objective way to determine this?
Title: Re: We have work to do.
Post by: dongringo on September 17, 2011, 09:51:05 PM
Since the poll is an overwhelming popularity contest that is impossible to get JP to win I figured I'd conduct an experiment. I single handedly pushed Al Di Meola from .27% to .34% past Joe Satriani in less than a half hour.  :lol

Voted Rusty Cooley, because he is really the fastest I know of.

I mean, whatever he plays invariably sounds like shit, but hey, he is the fastest.

Maybe not THE fastest, but I voted for Paco because he can effortlessly do with his fingers whatever all the other guys on the list do with a pick.

Also, interestingly, Sam Totman and Herman Li are apparently Siamese twins ;D

I voted for JP because I'm a fanboy that's just as bad as the A7X fans that have lost touch with reality. I like Syn and his playing but my god that is just unrealistic.

I'm not familiar with every player on that list but if I was being honest, the fastest I have EVER heard was pre ms Jason Becker. He was astoundingly fast.

It said fastest, not 'best' or 'favourite', so I voted Rusty Cooley. That guy is a competitor for the most technically monstrous guitarist on the planet, and has decent musicality to a lot of his stuff (especially his work for Outworld, who were an epic band) as well.

Chet Atkins actually is pretty fast.  And he's amazing.  I've seen him play two songs at once.  No shit.

Yeah, but Bettencourt is pretty fast. Not even close to Batio, though.

I love Nunon to death (in the top 5 guitarists for me), but he's not that fast.

The fangirl in me would vote JP in a heartbeat. Then again, this poll is (or should be) about the fastest guitarists and that price would go to Batio, absolutely.
Just look at his video for No Boundaries, that speed is just ridiculous!   :eek

It had nothing to do with Bettencourt being fast or not. It's just that

A) Fastest isn't really an opinion, if you are the fastest player then you are the fastest player.
B) Who cares how fast you play? Bettencourt is my favorite guitarist, yet Batio plays faster than him. That doesn't make me like Batio more, because I think Batio's songwriting sucks.

Les Paul is on the list?  I thought he was known more for country/western/folk stuff, musically, than being a fast guitar  player...
