99% of my collection is .aac format.  Will that be ok, or do you need me to convert them?

As long as it can play in Winamp it should be fine.

Alright everypony time for results:

8 Points
Kingshmegland: I Mother Earth - God Rocket (Into the Heart of Las Vegas)

This was a pretty good song. I really like the mood it set. I'd heard one song rom this band before, I think I saw a music video of theirs when I was a teenager, and I remember liking it. This song was particularly good though. :tup

7 Points
UMH: Polkadot Cadaver - Pure Bedlam for Half Breeds

This song is definitely strange but cool. I know these guys are the same as Dog Fashion Disco (or something), and I liked the song that DFD did with Serj Tankian. Pretty cool tune.

6 Points
DTVT: Evergrey - Recreation Day

Pretty cool song. I liked the solo. Not much else to say. :lol

5 Points
PC: Blind Guardian - Ride Into Obsession

I've tried to get into BG before but never really had much success. Power Metal has never really been my thing. This song is pretty good compared to the other stuff I've checked out from them, though. :tup

4 Points
LLTWM: Psychotic Waltz - And the Devil Cried

Pretty good song. Not a huge fan of the old school production, but I could tell the music was quite good.

3 Points
Cup: Birth Control - Gamma Ray

A feel like I should be taking acid before listening to this.

2 Points
Nic35: Karmakanic - Two Blocks From the Edge

Pretty good song. Had kind of a Pink Floyd vibe to it which I thought was pretty cool. I wasn't hot on the singer though, something about his voice sort of bothered me :lol

1 Point
Nekov: Pagan's Mind - God's Equation

Song is pretty much standard prog metal. Has some pretty cool bits, but overall it's not really anything special. Not a bad song by any means.

As you can probably tell I kinda suck at talking about music.

Standings:

8 - kingshmegland
7 - Ultimetalhead
6 - DTVT
5 - Perpetual Change
4 - LieLowTheWantedMan
3 - Cup
2 - Nic35
1 - Nekov

Next round will be: Something fun. That doesn't necessarily mean poppy. Pop is fun, but Pantera is also fun. Do with that what you will. If people send me submissions via email when the site goes down I will try to have the results up once we're back online  ;D

8 Points
LLTWM: The Dear Hunter - Smiling Swine

This song was awesome. Musically interesting and very fun to listen to. I've been meaning to check out The Dear Hunter for a while, and this song definitely impressed me.

7 Points
DTVT: Ben Folds Five - Song for the Dumped

This song was pretty fun and the lyrics were quite entertaining. Loved the jazzy feel of it. Very nice.p

6 Points
Nic35: Fair to Midland - Musical Chairs

I know a lot of people around here really dig this band and I can see why. This song is a great listen, though I'm not sure if I would call it 'fun'...

5 Points
PC: Savatage - Strange Wings

Starts out awesome, rocking out. Very fun song. The eighties style definitely works in its favour in that regard. I think it loses a bit of steam later on but overall it was a good listen.

4 Points
kingshmegland: Ben Folds Five - Battle of Who Could Care Less

Two songs from the same band?! Oh well. This certainly fits the requirement of fun! I definitely like the jazzy feel to it. Good stuff.

3 Points
Nekov: Electrocution250 - Dr. Fluffels

This song was pretty fun to listen to, had me moving around in my seat. Musically not really my style, but it was a very fun listen and that's what I asked for.

2 Points
Ultimetalhead: Primus - Tragedy's A' Comin'

I've heard Primus before but not really enough to know them. As expected the song is quite funky. Overall a pretty nifty tune but it didn't blow me away.

1 Points
Cup: Gamma Ray - Tribute to the Past

Hmm...Musically it was okay, but I didn't really get a 'fun' aspect from it.

13 - DTVT
12 - kingshmegland
12 - LieLowTheWantedMan
10 - Perpetual Change
9 - Ultimetalhead
8 - Nic35
4 - Cup
4 - Nekov

Time for round 3: This time I'm looking for something with a female vocalist...or if you don't have that, something with a focus on vocals. Have at it

Mason you bugger!!  I picked the same band and from the same album!!  You know me too well. :lol

Glad you liked them Genowyn.

Thinking of a new song to send.
Title: Re: Genowyn's Song Roulette v. yeah; Round three!
Post by: Dr. DTVT on September 11, 2011, 02:01:01 PM
I was originally going to send "Your Redneck Past" because it has that fun drum measure trade-off in the chorus, but I decided to go less subtle.  I also thought about sending a Fair to Midland song or a Dear Hunter.  They're pretty awesome, check them out.

I'll have a song sent today.  About 5 bands came to mind immediately that weren't super-obvious so I need to listen to them myself.

Also lol at cup for sending Gamma Ray two rounds in a row.  Third time's a charm I think...do it again.

UMH: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Balrog Boogie

Very cool song. Like the operatic style of vocals quite a bit. A friend of mine said the song reminded him of Bad Devil :lol

7 Points

LieLowTheWantedMan: Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Phthisis

Definitely interesting and very cool. I liked the vocals a lot as well. Great tune :tup

6 Points

Kingshmegland: Sarah McLachlan - Possession

Beautiful song. I really loved the vocals. Very good.

5 Points

DTVT: Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Angle of Repose

Weeee another band repeat :lol. I feel mostly the same way about this tune as the other SGM one, but I don't like it quite as much :lol

4 Points

PC: Billie Holiday - Lady Sings the Blues

Very nice song. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I really need to get into more jazz :lol

3 Points

Nic35: Unexpect - Orange Vigilantes

The musicianship is certainly impressive if a bit frantic. Never really been a fan of super super technical metal, though. When the clean vocals came in they were very nice.

2 Points

Cup: Talking Heads - Radio Head

I take it you didn't have anything with a female vocalist? Oh well. This song was definitely...interesting. I was asking for things with a vocal focus but unfortunately then vocals did not impress me overly :(

1 Point

Nekov: Illegal Aliens - Green Bomb

Unfortunately this song didn't really grab me at all. It was sort of bland.

19 - LieLowTheWantedMan
18 - DTVT
18 - kingshmegland
17 - Ultimetalhead
13 - Perpetual Change

First off, quick question: Since we've had two rounds where I recieved the same band from two players, would you guys prefer if I asked for resubs in those instances?

Second, the theme for the next round: Heavy. Gimme what you got. This doesn't necessarily mean the heaviest song will win, they need to be good, too  :lol

Two songs from the same band in the same round is ok as long as it isn't the same song.  The second person shouldn't be punished for not checking the thread as often (some of us have jobs - so just because I can post doesn't mean I have access to my music library), or the second person shouldn't get a mulligan if two people send a band you end up not liking.

He might not have them all yet.

Also, he really shouldn't be judging on one listen.  When I ran mine, I listened to them all at least 5 times except for the long song round, and I still did those twice (including a 60 minute song).

PC: Periphery - Letter Experiment

Fuck yes. This song was awesome. Instrumentally awesome, vocally awesome. Everything comes together extremely well and creates something totally kickass. What the fuck. Why haven't I heard this before?

7 Points

Kingshmegland: Karnivool - The Caudal Lure

This kinda reminds me of Tool (just at the beginning though), which is a good thing. This song was very cool and a great listen. Love the instrumental work, love the vocals, awesome.

6 Points

Nic35: Gojira - Oroborus

Love the opening riff, though it has a bit of an Opeth syndrome to it (that is the good riff repeats like ten times more than it ought to). Not super thrilled about the vocals but they work well with the music. This HO/PO riff is cool but they keep using it, like a lot :lol. Overall a very cool song.

5 Points

Nekov: Aghora - Moksha

Why didn't you send this during the ladies round? This is awesome :lol. I love the vocals and like with everything else in this round the instrumentals are great. Good stuff.

4 Points

LieLowTheWantedMan: Agalloch - Falling Snow

Well I like the music but I really can't stand black metal vocals. At least the production isn't atrocious which is more than I can say for most black metal. As much as I don't really like the vocals I feel like they compliment the music really well, which I guess is the point. Cool song.

3 Points

DTVT: Enslaved - Clouds

I saw these guys open for Opeth on the tour when they did that (2009?) and enjoyed it a lot at the time. This was a pretty good song. I enjoyed the instrumental work (I keep saying that) and the clean vocals, but as I mentioned with Agalloch I really can't stand Black Metal vocals. Other than that it was a good song.

2 Points

Cup: Helloween - Sole Survivor

Very cool song. Love all the instrumental work and the vocals are pretty cool. Cool cool everything is cool.

1 Points

UMH: Nevermore - River Dragon Has Come

Definitely liked the instrumental work on this song but I really didn't like the vocals. They reminded me of Iced Earth, but in a bad way :lol. Awesome solo. Pretty good song.

So as you can probably tell from my commentaries I actually really enjoyed all the submissions this round, but hey, someone's gotta win and someone's gotta lose.

That's twice I promised results soon when I was still missing a song  :lol. I'll try to stop.

8 Points

LieLowTheWantedMan: Sigur Ros - Untitled 3

I tried checking out Sigur Ros before and I wasn't really blown away by it. This song on the other hand was really beautiful. I love how the song centers around this simple piano melody that keeps repeating as the rest of the song gets more and more intense. It sort of makes me feel like, if this were a movie then this would play as the main character gets shot and lies bleeding out in the snow, and the white snow slowly turns red and the camera is above him and slowly zooming out as it fades to black. That shot is what this song made me feel. I don't know if that makes any fucking sense.

7 Points

Perpetual Change: Anathema - 2000 & Gone

Anathema is a band I've been meaning to check out due to the glowing reviews they get around these parts, but I sort of hold a grudge against them because I wanted to start a band called Anathema when I was like 14, and I even drew a cool logo for it and I was sorta heartbroken when I found out it was already a band. So, about the song itself. I enjoyed it a lot. Very beautiful. I really liked how they used the guitar, both with the clean riff and the distorted wailing kinda stuff going on overtop of it. Me gusta.

6 Points

DTVT: Scale the Summit - The Levitated

I enjoyed Carving Desert Canyons a lot but I didn't know they had a new album. I was very impressed by this song. It was very groovy and sort of dreamy? I guess is the word I would use to describe it while still being pretty technical. Good stuff.

5 Points

Nic35: The Ocean - Wille Zum Untergang

I really enjoyed this song. From the pretty mellow beginning as it builds up to a pretty intense climax...overall very cool.

4 Points

Nekov: Riverside - Lucid Dream IV

Pretty good song. Sort of reminded me of how DT or LTE do instrumentals, which was good. Not really much more to say about it at the moment.

3 Points

Cup: Chick Corea - Crystal Silence

This song was kinda weird but nice. Not a huge fan of saxophone in general but they used it pretty well here (assuming that is a saxophone I'm hearing, Wikipedia doesn't list one). The other parts sorta sounded like Porcupine Tree...specifically they reminded me of Russia on Ice.

UMH: OSI - Microburst Alert

Hey this has words in it geez. I'm familiar with OSI but I haven't really listened to them enough to know a lot of songs, and this one I don't know. For the first half of this song I was feeling sorta blah towards it, but then the tension broke and it got all awesome.

1 Point

Kingshmegland: Bela Fleck & The Flecktones - Life Without Elvis

Ehhhh. Didn't really like this one. Sorry man :lol. Just really never been a big fan of the 'southern' sound at all.

Next up is round six: This time I'm looking for something with a good solo. That could be a slower, more emotional one or a more intense one. Whatever you want. Also the song itself needs to be good.

That's the intent, but it can be any kind.

I'm off tomorrow so I should have them for you then.

Haha oh past self you silly.

So basically in hindsight I realize this was a stupid idea for a round because I don't actually like solos as much as I thought I did, I guess.

8 Points

Kingshmegland: Spock's Beard - She is Everything

So this is post Neal Morse Spock's Beard? That's cool because (incoming controversial opinion) I really didn't want to listen to a song about Jesus anyway :lol. Oh I do enjoy making fun of beloved musicians. Anyway. So this song is definitely awesome. The solo is awesome. Best kind of solo. Lyrics are sorta okay but at least they're not about Jesus (I'll stop)

7 Points

DTVT: Marillion - Sugar Mice

I've sorta heard this song before...on the SC tour DT did a medley with this and...Surrounded? So that's all I really know about it. Either way it was a very nice song. The solo was beautiful, definitely a good one for the emotional solo route.

6 Points

LLTWM: Genesis - Firth of Fifth

So I've never actually heard Genesis before, so we'll see how this goes. Overall this song is pretty good. Solos were good. I'm finding I don't have much to actually say about the songs themselves this round? My bad...

5 Points

PC: Marillion - Easter

I didn't quite like this one as much as the other Marillion track. It was a good song, the instrumental work was good, I enjoyed the solos. I've not much else to say.

4 Points

Nekov: Explorer's Club - Fate Speaks

Maybe I should have sent a length rule :lol. Oh well. So there are a lot of solos in this song. They are quite good, too. I'm not crazy about the rest of the song though. I think if they just took out the non solo bits and made this song an 8 minute solo it would be pretty cool.

3 Points

Cup: Riot - Sign of the Crimson Storm

So this was sorta some standard 80s metal I guess. The solo was great but the song as a whole didn't do very much for me.

2 Points

UMH: Annihilator - The Fun Palace

So uh, I wasn't really thrilled about the solo here because it was really just the same pattern getting higher and higher, or at least that's what it sounded like. The song itself was pretty good.

1 Point

Nic35: Meshuggah: Straws Pulled at Random

I was sorta surprised noone sent me Meshuggah during the heavy round. Now, I really enjoyed this song. Seriously. Buuut the solo really wasn't spectacular. I think it worked great for the song but not what I was looking for this round. It's only as a technicality that you get the lowest score this round :(

37 - LieLowTheWantedMan
34 - DTVT
34 - kingshmegland
33 - Perpetual Change
23 - Nic35
22 - Ultimetalhead
18 - Nekov
14 - Cup

So for the last two rounds we're gonna go TOTALLY CRAZY and everything is now worth DOUBLE POINTS. So it's still totally ANYONE'S GAME (but probably not).

Just for a fun tidbit, my favorite solos are probably Comfortably Numb and the one from this song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9oZk-v6TrQ

Also from now on please try to keep em under 10 mins  :lol

Theme for the next round is: Songs with unusual instruments. Basically anything that's not Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keys/Piano/Organ/Harpsichord etc. Sitars, mandolins, shamisen, whatever. Probably a safe bet not to send me ska or jazz though? I want rock/metal songs with these kinds of instruments in them.

That should be fine, probably. I'm just saying I don't want you to send me just some guy playing a sitar for 5 minutes, I want something with more unusual instruments incorporated into it.

Verrry sorry for the long time it took to update. Looks like Nic35 has bowed out for this round as well.

16 points:
Nekov: Korpiklaani - Tapporauta

Fuck yesss. This is what I was talking about for this round. :lol I enjoy this kind of extreme folk metal from time to time, especially Finntroll. This song was kickass. It made me want to get wasted and break shit.

14 points:
Ultimetalhead: Estradasphere - Smuggled Mutation

This song was really cool. I enjoyed it a lot. I really like violin/fiddle and I wish it was integrated with modern music a lot more. Oh well.

12 points:
Kingshmegland: Guster - Barrel of a Gun

I really enjoyed this song. Very cool. Not much else to say.

10 points:
Perpetual Change: Florence + The Machine - I'm Not Calling You A Liar

This is a band I've seen mentioned a lot on the forums and I can see why. I really enjoyed this song.

8 points:
DTVT: Grayceon - A Road Less Travelled

This song was pretty cool and a good example of the kind of thing I was looking for this round. I enjoyed the buildup and the climactic ending of the song quite a bit.

6 points:
LieLowTheWantedMan: Kayo Dot - A Pitcher of Summer

I've checked out this band before but I've never really gotten into them. This song was better than the previous stuff I've heard by them, but it still wasn't extremely impressive, unfortunately. The non-standard instruments were only featured for a small part of the song and weren't very prominent either.

4 points:
Cup: Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells

This song's okay...pretty creepy sounding, obviously, but overall it didn't really impress me too much.

46 - kingshmegland
43 - LieLowTheWantedMan

8 Points
Nekov: Haken - Streams

I enjoyed this song quite a bit. The death growls were a little bit jarring but overall it was very cool.

6 Points
UMH: Tomahawk - 101 North

This song was interesting but it didn't really do much for me. I've never really understood all the hype around Mike Patton, actually...his stuff is interesting but it doesn't do much more than that.
