I'm like Periphery ok. But I think it's just a little weird for them to tour with DT. Seems like a better fit with All that remains tour. What do you guys think?
-
Wrong forum, and really isn't necessary.
-
Shredding needs a Charlie Sheen avatar.
And I don't like Periphery.
-
I dont like them to be honest. If I go, I will go in time for DT or just get the M&G ticket.

how so? hehe

seeing as dream theater is my #1 favorite band and periphery is #2. imveryokwiththis. of course i wont get to see a show with them both though.
like i said before in the other thread, give the song 'racecar' a fair listen. its on youtube for free from their record label
-
As always, I'd much rather see one band at a time. If more than one band is playing one night the chance of me being a fan (or close to) of both is like 10%. Waste of my time. Periphery is ok, but nothing that I would put on by myself every day. First part of the concert will probably be quite meh, as usual. I've seen only one booking with artists that I though were great on the same evening, The Four Tops and The Temptations. Both old Motown groups, so they couldn't miss. Within metal the difference between bands is often pretty huge, and I only like a very small percentage.
-
You missed a choice. I HAET Periphery.
-
Just tried to listen to them, and kind of awkwardly remembered that I tried to listen to them one time before. I like some of it, but can't really stand the screamo vocals.

WINNING!
SHREDDING!

wrong section.
yes i like most of periphery's music.
probably not best suited as a DT opener - but really who cares? it'll be great shows regardless.
-
but in the grand scheme of things, does the opener matter? i can only think it would if it was general admission and you HAD to sit through a band you dont like.
anyway, its cool that jake bowen (periphery guitar player) did key tech for jordan on the octavarium tour, and now hes on stage opening
-
wrong section.
I dunno, it's about the tour with DT and whether the two bands fit together. I guess it could be moved to the Concerts & Setlists board, but then it would probably get ignored and that's more for concert discussion and review.
As for me, I love Periphery and think they fit as well with DT as most of their support bands have done.
-

I think he's JP's nephew too.
-
I enjoy them lots. As my musical taste is diverse amongst diverse, Periphery and Dream Theater actually feels right.
And lol at periphery being fitting with All That Remains. Trivium fits with All That Remains more than Periphery.

that is true, but they dont like to broadcast it. in fact, im 98% sure they turned down trivium's spot on the US tour so they can do a headlining club tour

Yup, which I like because Periphery are playing at a small place called The Launchpad, which has a bar in the front and the stage in the back. The most intimate place in Albuquerque. You can meet the band pretty much, so lets hope I can go and possibly get a pic and autograph from these guys.
-
Personally don't think Trivium OR Periphery's sound fits DT. I guess I am just not into the whole scream-o sound.... Actual SUNG lyrics are much better imho
My vote was No they don't fit.

i guarantee you will see them. ive seen the band twice and they are always hanging out at the merch table, etc.
-
Not too familiar with their music, been listening a little to them on spotify today and watched some low quality live vids on Youtube, not too impressed after all, but I guess it could be fun seeing them, the vocals is the biggest issue for me though.
-
Instrumentally I quite like Periphery, but I'm really not into the whole screamo vocals (hence why I only have the instrumental version of their album).
It will be interesting to see them open for DT, so I'll hold my judgement until I've seen it.
-
Periphery is fucking awesome and they are a great fit to open for DT.

true that!
looking forward to getting the tickets for Wembley - anybody have any idea whatsoever when they're likely to be available?
-
Gives me a bit longer to get there as I won't need to get to Manchester for 7.30 pm.
-
Ignoring the vocals, their music is great.
-
I love Periphery; I think the vocals are great. I'm extremely jealous for Europe!
-
WHY CAN'T BAD SALAD SUPPORT!?!?!?! GRR!
-
WHY CAN'T BAD SALAD SUPPORT!?!?!?! GRR!
as much as i like them, they are too 'Dream Theater' to open for Dream Theater
-
Periphery would be awesome without that awful, awful singer.
-
I'm not all that familiar with Periphery, but I also don't know how much it matters what kind of "fit" they are with DT.
-
People think they don't fit because of the singer? Why? I knew of their instrumental versions and think they fit even with their singer, whom I actually enjoy as he does cooler phrasing with his style.
-
when spencer joined the band the amount of butthurt was astronomical. hes been improving ever since and is able to scream very low and sing very high. ive always liked him, but hes a polarizing figure for sure
-
hes been improving ever since
Case in point: Frak the Gods
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIPvqMbhou4
-
I don't mind his screaming but I wish he sang more. I think his clean vocals are damn good.
I think the fit their music just enough where they are perfect for opening. Kind of like Between the Buried and Me fit.
-

check out all new materials, jetpacks was yes! for more clean singing
-
I love Periphery's music and I think they would be a GREAT opener for DT.
Also, I hate everyone referring to the vocals as "screamo". Not that I expect people to differentiate between types of harsh vocals if they don't listen to those kinds of bands. But still. Periphery.. screamo LOL
-
I think musically they fit with DT, but I personally hate the growls to the point where I'd rather not listen to it.
-
It's not even the screams and growls that are worst part. It's his emo clean singing. The guy could be a good replacement for Simple Plan.
-

lol stop exaggerating. spencer rules, and keeps getting better. 'emo' is not the right word you are looking for. i can understand 'whiny' etc.
-
I listened to some stuff and I didn't really like what I heard. Because of this, I'm quite sure that Amplifier will remain my favourite opening band for DT.
-
John Petrucci is related to Jake Bowen, so that's probably one reason for this.
Otherwise, it's not a good fit but it's a better fit than Trivium. Periphery are fairly well known in the prog metal circles now.
Also, 5/8 is pretty much in love with them. So there ya go. Things are starting to come back together lately it seems.
-
I would have voted for "What's a Periphery?", but that wasn't an option, so I voted for don't care about their music, which is still true enough.
-
I'd take Periphery's album over the last ~5 DT albums or so, you guys who get to see them open for DT are lucky. :/

Pretty much.

Too true. And am I to understood that DT fans have to sit through another shitty screamo band as an opener? I mean seriously, when is this pathetic fad going to end? It was passe 2 years ago at least. I think 10 years down the road people are going to look back at this music and say "what the hell were we thinking?" At least true death metal has authentic death growls that fit the music, but this type of useless tripe . . . I just don't get it.
Since this is the first time in 5 DT shows that I have an actual assigned seat, I think I'll just arrange to arrive late.
-

No.
-
For DT fans not accustomed to harsh vocals:
Check out "Jetpacks Was Yes 2.0", "Light", and "All New Materials".

Haha, oh god this is the most pretentious post I've ever read.

You must be a very young fan to say that.
-
I think in this current musical climate it's a good fit. Much better than Eden's Curse. I'm sorry but I'm usually not going to get into a new prog band at a gig, I wanna be fired the hell up and Periphery will do just that. Hoping for a more active crowd at the next gig in Manchester :) The one at leeds, the crowd was near standstill and to be honest I love to jump around like a maniac
-
Anyone ragging on Spencer is an idiot, I saw him at Sonisphere and he fucking ruled. Listen to his clean section at the end of Frak The Gods and tell me that doesn't take skill.
-

Not at all, but DT's latter albums hasn't exactly been good, so there's really not a big challenge to top them.
-
I don't get what's supposed to be so bad about his vocals, I think he's brilliant.
-
It sounds like the Screamo bandwagon. I call that voice Whiny teen voice. But he uses it differently which I enjoy especially when he hits the highs. That is pretty fucking amazing.
-
I love Periphery so i aint complaining. I can see why DT fans won't be into Periphery because of the screaming vocals and the "djent"
-

The he should SING all the time, amirite?

Not being a fan is fine, but dismissing it as generic emo garbage is just ignorant.

The average person today is ignorant sadly. :/
-
I love Periphery, I think it's a great band, that is what I like, low tunings, weird metrum. Will be good for DT as an opener ;)
-
The best opener for DT is actually DT. I would prefer "an evenign with...". At least it sounds iteresting, but i do not really care.

I think it's a great pairing. That said, it doesn't look like they're coming close enough for me this year.

Way to miss the point. Tell me, is tuneless screaming now the standard for good vocals? The way you kids talk it sounds like that's the case. :|

Short answer is Yes. I wish it weren't so, but there's almost no good music without screams coming out anymore. At least not from any new metal artists.
-
lol your opinion =/= fact. Some people enjoy screaming in certain bands. Deal with it.
and save the condescending 'kids these days" argument
-
Kids these days...
j/k I'm not familiar with too much of their music, but with what I've heard, the screaming didn't bother me.
-

Really? I've heard plenty.
But harsh vocals are just as valid as clean singing.

Clean vocals >>>>>>>>>> harsh vocals

-
Yes, do share. I'm always up for new music with non sucky vocals.
-
Meh, I hesitate to say that they suck (becuz opinions n such) but... they suck.
I am not a fan of the djenty-guitar mixed with shit metalcore-style vocals. Harsh vocals are great, as long as they're good. Unfortunately, Spencer's are not good and I don't care for his clean singing either.
-
ignoring the vocal debate. periphery has some skilled musicians
check out their drummer matt (skip to 2:31 when they start talking)

I like Periphery. I was obsessed with them earlier this year. Saw them here in Melbourne last month and they were terrible live. The singer couldn't keep up and couldn't sing in tune.
-
ok last defense post, cause i really shouldnt care whats going on in this thread haha. you can say they suck but try to give this a fair listen. ive turned many people around to periphery with this song. its 15 mins long, but hey this is a DT board
also nevermore fans should know that jeff loomis did a guest solo on it
Periphery - 'Racecar'

Can people in this thread not acknowledge that harsh vocals are a valid form of expression for singers as well? Just because they are a bit more abrasive than you're used to doesn't mean you have to lambaste it with ill-founded arguments. I for one am happy that Periphery is getting a chance to open for Dream Theater, as they are one of their very obvious influences. You can also bet your ass I'm taking that 3 hour bus ride to see the show in NY as well.
-
I think they fit perfectly cause i believe that djent is the new face of prog metal! So these concerts are gonna be like a meeting,a marriage of past and present prog metal!Periphery and all those djent bands really grew up listening to bands like DT and Meshuggah so i guess its kinda like a dream come true for them to open for their heroes! Its great for us to being able to watch the history of prog metal in front of our eyes in those concerts! How it started in the late 80s and how prog is played nowadays with Periphery who are considered to be the pioneers of djent!
-

He has improved a hell of a lot recently. Like I said, he was beyond amazing when I saw them, and I hope he is again for this tour.

Thanks for sharing. The music is excellent. (like i always think). I love the tone of the vocals. But the vocal melody writing is truly crap especially in the first few minutes. It gets better as the music goes along. I can understand (guys you can call others un-educated but I prefer we have a more civil conversation here) why someone compares this to screamo. The pop like melody just sucks i will have to say. The music gets so much better past the 5 min mark. I don't hate harsh vocals, but I prefer the singing.
Just my 2 cents.
-
Can people in this thread not acknowledge that harsh vocals are a valid form of expression for singers as well?
I completely agree.
But that doesn't mean people have to ENJOY that form of expression.
-
Can people in this thread not acknowledge that harsh vocals are a valid form of expression for singers as well?
They are I agree, it's just that the vocals in Periphery are just not that good.
I like Opeth, Death, Between the Buried and Me and Gojira, amongst other harsh vocal-utilizing bands, but I just don't like Periphery. Is that okay?
-
Of course, I'm not saying you "have" to enjoy it I was just taken aback by the somewhat overall negative reception of Periphery in this thread. Different strokes, different folks I guess.
-
Periphery do have some very skilled band members. Matt is extremely knowledgeable. A friend of mine went to his drumming workshop at Sonisphere and was blown away by the amount of technicalities he knew and practiced regularly to put in the music.
