Can anyone catch that last line? Could make for another interesting lyric game.
Goddamnit. I meant modify not quote. I'm being stupid today >.<
-
Ah beat me to it!!!!
-
Heavy techy DT.
-
HEY, I HAVE AN IDEA! LET'S START AT THE SECOND LINE OF THE CHORUS! DERP.
Still a good clip though :tup
-
Heavy and technical, nice!
Thanks for the clip :tup
-
YEEESSSSSSS!!!!! What a clip!

uhuhuhuhuhuuhuhuh :metal :metal :metal :metal :yarr :yarr :yarr :metal :metal :yarr :yarr :yarr :metal :metal :metal :yarr :yarr :metal

I like it!
Also, I'm starting to notice there's a lot of 5/4 and 5/8 on this album. I guess the guys were really feeling the 5-meters a lot during the writing sessions!
Also, that MM fill near the end of the clip!!!! NICE! :hefdaddy

ahhhhhh. so technical. so awesome
-
like it more thant this is the life snippet
-
:metal :metal :metal
Lovin' this snippet...this one got me a little more psyched for the CD than the last one, although the ballad-y prog stuff is really good too.
-
the bass is awesome :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

Feared and respected
Living among the gods
Lead me and my spirit is black as gold (?)
Lost not forgotten
King of the deathless soul
The Dark Eternal Night part 2, folks. I think these are the lyrics.
-
Ah, this is awesome! 15 more days, can't wait!
-
Very interesting snippet, i have to say that in every snippet JLB sounds awesome!
-
Feared and respected

The Dark Eternal Night part 2, folks. I think these are the lyrics.
Feared and respected
Living among the gods
Leading the empire
Spirit as black as coal
Lost not forgotten
King of the deathless soul
(It starts at the second line of the chorus, but I'll stick to what's public)
-
Love the music. But I'm confused by the artwork of the knight on a horse. Doesn't seem to fit with the other artwork.
-
:hefdaddy
this is the DT album I've been waiting for
DAT DJENT riff
-
Love the music. But I'm confused by the artwork of the knight on a horse. Doesn't seem to fit with the other artwork.
Yeah at least he could have been on a unicycle or something.
-
every snippet has been great.
:hefdaddy

i guess you can call it that. he doesnt use the 'djent' chord though
-
Love the music. But I'm confused by the artwork of the knight on a horse. Doesn't seem to fit with the other artwork.
And thank god, too!
Not a fan of the other booklet art, so far, but this is just cracking.
-
Love the music. But I'm confused by the artwork of the knight on a horse. Doesn't seem to fit with the other artwork.
John Petrucci said that this song was about the powerful Persian army and how they are lost in time but will never be forgotten. Hence the Persian on a horse
-
Myung is back so hard that it makes me want to cry. :omg: The breakdown-type riff at :34 is so awesome. Mangini did an amazing job with the drums.
-
Love the music. But I'm confused by the artwork of the knight on a horse. Doesn't seem to fit with the other artwork.
It's a camel I think.
-
So good. Love how much diversity we're seeing so far. Can't wait for this record. :)
Alex
-
Didn't really impress me, but we'll see about the rest of the song. I like how fast it is, though.
-
only here would people go right for the artwork..
majesty symbol on the clouds?
-
Holy shit! :metal
-
I find those fills on the chorus(if it was the chorus) a bit much. Makes the chorus lose flow and groove to me. Reminds me of the chorus of UAGM with less flow, more filler. Really liked everything after chorus though.

Yeah, that black as gold line was really fuzzy...
-

majesty symbol on the clouds?
In my defence, it's mainly 'cause I can't listen to the music quite yet. :p So it's a manifestation of excitement! Plus I'm a little relieved, 'cause Hugh Syme's usually ace for booklet art, but I've been kind of dismayed by what we've seen up until now.
-
every snippet has been great.
:hefdaddy

haha yeah and doesn't have the misha axe fx compression gain etc. but rhythmically so techanical... so power energy
-
I like it. Love the bass, and JLB sounds awesome, too.
-
I died.
-
this snippet rules. hard
also knight on camel. awesome haha
-
Nice bass groove at the end.
I wasn't particularly thrilled this time, but it doesn't really matter to me. It still has potential to be a terrific song, I mean, there are still nine minutes left, right?
-
sounds really great minus the lyrics and labrie, but thats old news. im extremely excited for this album. called roadrunner to make sure that the preorders would be here on the 13th by the absolute latest lol.
-
I definitely can see this song turning out to be an UAGM type feel. Sweet.
-
This is really surprising, actually. I especially dig JLB's work and MM's final fill. If the songs keeps the same level it will rank among the best metal driven DT song of this century!
-
I really wasn't digging the first half but once the riff kicked in at :38 it changed my opinion.
-

Are you kidding me? I thought JLB sounded fantastic! Listen to the very end, while it's fading, he goes into the higher octave, I personally think each member is using their musicianship to its full potential in this album. I believe we're in for a treat.
-

same for me. sounded too like A7X for my liking. Probably a few more plays will change my mind :tup JLB sounding great though, and Myung... YES!!! :metal

i think we're in for a treat too. i think this is going to be their best album since scenes. labrie has sounded the same since falling into infinity; old and tired.

Uhm... I really want to see A7X pull off the technicality of ANY section of this song, let alone album.

on seconds listening not as much but between 0:03 - 0:09, just sounded pretty A7Xish in my opinion. the rest of the song is awesome though, this album is going to be incredible judging from the snippets :tup
-
Tasty technical Dream Theater. I love it :metal
-
hory shit
-
Diggin the Misha influenced Djenty riff :metal
This song is gonna kick some ass!
-
MP is the riding guy, right
-
So this is what they meant by SFAM-style breakdowns.
-
MYUNG! <3

also knight on camel. awesome haha
??? I don't get the "haha" part. Given that the song is about the ancient Persian army, the image makes perfect sense. I'm not getting what's funny about it.

no idea they actually did that. doesnt make sense to hold the spear, unless camels are fast. no idea. my first thought was syme being quirky. i thought it was a horse first glance
-
Nope, they rode camels.
-
This is not funny anymore. They're teasing us with those snippets and every following one is better than the previous. I want this album already !

No worries. James Labrie has sounded the same, well since I&W. I'm not sure why he sounds so much like James Labrie on all these albums.

Not bad - feels like it might be a Beyond This Life kinda track.
-
WOW heaviest snippet by far!! very very cool... this totally made me go :metal :corn :metal :hefdaddy :omg:
and around 58 second you hear.................... A BASS LINE~!!!!!
i find the sound of the drums so fresh! very live. you almost see him hitting the octoban!
best snippet IMO.....gonna listen to it a couple of of more times.
-

this my fellow fan is an understatement :P
this sounds like a riff madness!

Love the music. But I'm confused by the artwork of the knight on a horse. Doesn't seem to fit with the other artwork.
where did the clown go? is he burried in the sand? :-)

Understood. And I know it can be a fine line between offering constructive criticism or constructively explaining a dislike, on one hand, versus being insulting, on the other hand. Just try to remember that, even though the Internet in general can be a very loose environment, this is a site meant to support the band, so it is useful to use some tact sometimes.

Dat bassssssssssssssss
-
That was sick. My favorite snippet in terms of Mangini's playing too.
-
SO POWERFAL, TECHNICAL!! So energy! POWA!! SO HEAVY SOUND!!!
From what I've heard, this is not even the heaviest song in the album and there are moments that are far more progressive from anything we've heard so far.
-
Ha, ha, that was SICK!
This album is going to be epic as hell :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal
-
Why is nobody posting? The reactions are so fun to read. Couple more thoughts:
- Love the power of Myung in this track. The bass is doubling the drums during the super heavy chorus, which makes the overall effect so much more of a rush. Then there's the stupdendously smooth bass groove as the end of the snippet.
- Rudess goes subtle here. But I don't hear a pig sound doubling the guitar, so it's all okay.
- I don't care if I'm the only person who thinks this, but I'm always happy when DT goes djent.
- I think it's interesting how, as a guitar player, Petrucci seems to have really sublimated himself on this album. Even as he's riffing at full force during the chorus, JLB's vocals are up front. I'm sure when we hear the album the solos will all be heavily featured moments, but JP is stil way less prominent on this album (so far) than he's been in a while.
- JLB rules again on this track.
-
So is the unicyclist now riding a camel?
-
digging this one!!!! It's so perfect!!! :metal :metal :metal
-
Tasty little morsel right there. And you can tell it is a small part of something grandiose.
-
That bit with the staccato guitars... that's the second clip that's put me in mind of Fatal Tragedy. Put that cool keyboard thing Rudess did over it on top and it'd be a dead ringer. Really shows they're going back to being influenced by themselves. Awesome.
Also, I reckon the unicyclist is just outside of the frame. Him the the camel guy are about to have a joust. ;)
-
after readings Reapsta's post...i think i didn't even hear JR?? it was all drums/guitar/bass/vocals?
he has done a very good job in melding in the music!!...
i've listen to it 5 times now.. and this snippets is fun to play over and over again!

You can hear James is following the guitar with a Hammond sound. :metal

DAYUM, this snippet was AWESOME!! :metal

Awesome :hefdaddy
As much as I love the teasers and how addicting they are, especially this one, I gotta stop listening to them before I ruin the album for myself.
-
And as always, they put in half a second of a different structure riiight at the end so you can hear that it's different, but you can't hear what it is. Daym.
Sounds very promising overall.
-
as usual none talk about the drumming, man the drum sound better than the other snippets and he's doing crazy stuff!!I already love this album!!

This snippet gets me really excited. It does what the two previous ones have failed to do.
It's going to be a kickass record for sure.
-

I mentioned Mangini's drumming!!!!
But yeah, he rocked on this track. He got a lot of little nuances there will still being able to bang the crap out of his kit when necessary. I love hearing stuff like the very last fill in the snippet. The only weird part is the last 4th of the djent riff.
-
Face.
Melted.

Yeah, he's definitely more subtle on this track, which is interesting because he's VERY prominent on the others.
By the way, 'Steak, who's that in your new avatar?
-
Man, I just want the album already.
-
Keyboards' a bit low, would have been more epic with those chords more dominant, but this was a great clip, really liking what we have heard so far on this one. I'm so excited, I might poo.

I also sort of winced at the AX7 feel in the chorus, but dig the lyrics and prog. This is a track that will take some time for me to absrob, but will ultimately enjoy the tune.
-
I like it better than the This Is The Life snippet. BTS is still my favourite though :D
-
*SPLOOGES*
Seriously though, bought my tix to the SF show yesterday, the epic MS paint thread, snippets left and right, album being delivered in 19 days, show in 30, I am one happy motherfucker. :metal
-
Nice one. Probably my second favorite of the snippets so far.
-
It's aight. Not one of the better snippets IMO, but it does make me arguably the most curious to hear the whole song (besides maybe BAI), if that makes sense.

my brain couldnt process it the first couple of times but now its :hefdaddy
love all the snippets - there is certainly going to be a lot of variety on the CD.

AWWWWW YEEEEAAAAAAAAAA!!!! Man I'm lovin' all these snippets!!!!

Cool stuff! Drums in particular stood out to me, JLB sounds awesome as well

It took me one bar to think of that. I read the post to see if anyone else posted that thought before me. I actually really love that part in Fatal Tragedy, but this snippet does nothing for me.
-
Love the music. But I'm confused by the artwork of the knight on a horse. Doesn't seem to fit with the other artwork.

He must be dead by now... I suppose that's the consequence of being such a daredevil.

My oath to not listen to any snippets is really taking its toll on me...

Maaaaan, this could be a great album. I was completely expecting the MP 1 & 2 & 3 e & 4 e & a cymbal work between :23 and :30. But then there wasn't any. I don't really expect anybody to know what I'm talking about.
Edit: Nevermind :02-:08 has it (thinking out loud)

It was the same with me, but then when i heard the snippet again, i see it was there in this :02-:08 part xD

Really good snippet. Interested to hear the full song, but, I mean, who isn't.
-
that's the second clip that's put me in mind of Fatal Tragedy.
I noticed that too, right out of Fatal Tragedy which could tie into this songs theme.
The groove sound at 0:53 is simply amazing!
-
WOW!!!!! My favorite snippet yet. I'm speechless. I am without speech. :hefdaddy Lost Not Forgotten
-
I can't recall the last time I was so excited about a release. Great Snippet Myung and Mangini sound like they are smokin in this one. I love the way the drums are following the guitar runs, reminds me of more the way Neil Peart used to play with active hands, Mike P leaned too much on active feet. Anyway I digress.
-
Holy fuck that sounds awesome. I WANT THIS ALBUM ASAP!!!!!

Not listening to this one. Listened to the other 4 though and love them. I don't like the idea of having heard a minute of every song before hearing the full album

1 minute of each song is still 1/9th of the whole CD.

It's the "Myungini" effect
-
I really loved it, But, I really wanted to hear where that track was going, right near the end of the snippet. Intruiging. JLB sounds fantastic. and MM's sound is very heavy and plodding, yet intricate. His style definately lends DT a different sound. Great stuff!
-
The track ends where it shouldn't...I want more! :(
-
Nice snippet. That sounds like the DT I like. I really l this and the first snippet. The second and third were just ok to me.
-
Nice snippet. That sounds like the DT I like. I really l this and the first snippet. The second and third were just ok to me.
What about the fourth?
Anyways, this leaves snippets for "Build Me Up, Break Me Down", "Outcry" and "Far From Heaven", though I doubt they'd do the last because it'd literally be about a quarter of the song as a snippet! I predict an "Outcry" snippet next, and a video for BMUBMD to come out just before the release date.
-Marc.
-
I like the music a lot..... but.... I don't like those lyrics at all. SO cheesy and lame. Sorry, just my opinion.
-
That bass part was so unexpected. I love it. At first I was disappointed by the chorus as isn't this the one that every review has noted as being instantly memorable. However, than all of a sudden I found myself singing it!
-
The chorus was a little bit "meh" for me at first, but it's kinda growing on me. The rest of the snippet is pretty cool though.
-
I have to revise my opinion about the snippet. It's much better than I thought after having listened to it for the first two times. It's heavy, but still not trying too hard. It's technical, but not too much over the top. The lyrics are OK, and the definite highlight for me is the bass groove towards the end.

Same! :lol

My oath to listen to the snippets only one is also taking its toll... I don't remember what BAI or BTS or TITL was... which is good I think :) album so soon guys!! :metal

I... can't... stop... listening... to this snippet. The chorus is devastating, the djenty part is non-ending fun, and I LOVE how Mangini handles the transition into the apparently lighter vocal section. This is what Dream Theater should be.

Riff remind me on TDoE
-
Pretty awesome snippet. It's nice to see that DT is still comfortable doing the heavier numbers even with Portnoy gone.
The transitions between the chorus lines sound a bit forced, but I find them making more sense each time I listen. I feel like some of these odd time-sig riffs in the snippets sound out of place now but will make more sense once we have the full songs that actually set up those riffs.
The highlight of this snippet is unquestionably the breakdown though. Just incredible. This and Outcry are the two tracks I'm looking forward to the most.
-
DT + speed metal = WIN.
Seriously, they sound so good playing fast like that.
-
This is interesting. All throughout OTBOA I said that it felt very early Symphony X, and I've have to say the same about this one. That's not a complaint, btw. Brings back fond memories.
-
I dont know about anyone else, but this is my favorite snippet, with BAI right behind :tup
-
When it comes to drums, I haven't exactly developed any sort of taste/knowledge of tone quality, timbre etc. but I really love the sound of MMs snare drum; Especially in this snippet. sounds sexy :metal

You're not the only one.
-
I'll try not listen to it to the release date. I even didn't notice that bass thing of which You Guys are talking about, but I will wait with listening, let the album came out.
-
Like every sample so far, only listened to it once.
:metal
Oh my god this album will be fucking sweet.
-
I was initially going to not listen to the samples at all but.. just couldn't! I figured a good compromise would be that I'd let myself listen to each snippet just once, right when it came out. To my luck, handfuls of the melodies/riffs didn't stick in my mind. It's kinda even a bigger tease because I want to hear them again so badly! :D

I like how any palm muted grooves are now 'djent'. Does this mean that And Justice for All was a Djent record?

Kind of agreed, but that's mainly 'cause I'm not a fan of the word "djent" in any way. :p Then again, I'm always slow to warm to slang. Which is weird, 'cause I really dig chatty lingo, and outdated lingo, so watching slang evolve should be right up my street. I don't like the word at all, though. For a second.
I do agree with what Reap's saying, though. Was a neat post!

I just think the term is thrown around way too liberally and applied incorrectly the majority of the time.

So far I like the BAI snippet the most, but I don't feel right judging it against a full song (OTBOA), at least not until I hear BAI in its entirety.
-
Can't stop listening to this, MM's best playing so far from what I heard, That fill at the end is phenomenal, and they sure teased us well by showing that first word of when JLB's pitch goes up, I can't wait to hear that section!
-
This might be one of my favourites.
-
I do kind of hope though that the bass cuts through a bit more on the little bass part in the snippet when I listen to it on my speakers.
Blob?

The bass only disappears in these few bits because it's doubling the guitars, and because JP's palm muted chords are quite bass heavy here. For the rest of it, you hear Myung loud and clear, because he's doing his own thing a lot more (rather than doubling). On BCASL I noticed a tendency for Myung's bass to disappear when he goes higher up in the range, but not so on this album. He remains clear and audible, and the bass tone is clean and bubbly, not the distorted sound he's used on recent albums. The section the snippet is leading into when it cuts off has Myung very audible and prominent.
TMI?

No, by all means, keep going.

I'll just assume that TMI? stands for "Too many inches?"

People keep finding unintentional innuendo in my posts.
I wonder if I'm a closet homosexual and just don't know it yet.

I hope all the non-drummers here can sort of grasp how fucking ridicous and twisted some of these MM runs and "separations" are. Except for TITL I've involuntarily shouted "OH FUCK ME SHUT UP" or some such when listening to each snippet for the first time. His playing is beyond my expectations for him so far. I mean, there are hints of this stuff on other session projects but it sounds like he's completely off the leash here.

This is, by far, my favourite clip out of all of them--including the whole On The Backs Of Angels song, which I throughly enjoyed. This album will kick ass :metal
