Title: Root of All Evil (on Score) - what's that buzzer thing?
Post by: replicon on August 13, 2011, 11:20:26 PM
Hey all, I actually just registered to ask this question that's been nagging me. No amount of googling has helped:

On the "Score" live album, near the start of the first track (root of all evil), there's this weird bell/buzzer thing that goes off twice, and then stops. What was that? I imagine it was something at the event that they couldn't edit out, and it wasn't on purpose. anyone know? It doesn't look like it represents anything special, if I look at the video version...

cheers!

I always thought it was a Jordan thing. I don't though. All I know is that it is a great thing for me when playing it on drums as it cues me when to go  :lol

It's Jordan.  It's supposed to be there.  It was performed that way the whole tour, IIRC.

That maybe the reason why they used it and it was a cool added sound effect.

Yeah, I just listened to it. The entire beginning to TROAE is a copy of Welcome To The Machine

Apart from the part that it is

somewhat similar.

I wouldn't say no part is similar. The buzzer thing, the static noise, and the general feel, or pulse, sounds pretty similar to The Root of All Evil. It's not exact, but to me it feels like it was copied. I don't really want to argue this though. I think it sounds pretty damn similar and I'm not going to let someone change that opinion

aaah, cool, thanks for clearing that up! I wouldn't have guessed that. Welcome to the Machine never was one of my top PF songs hehe.

I love when they do those tributes like that. Like how the beginning of Trial of Tears (when played live) sounds almost exactly like the start of Xanadu, by Rush. :)

Or how the opening to Octavarium basically is Shine On You Crazy Diamond, except with guitar solo instead of synth solo line over top.  I couldn't believe it when I heard SOYCD for the first time, I flipped a total nut.

Yeah, I remember hearing SOYCD on the radio once (I should listen to that station more often..), my jaw dropped. That was the cue for me to start listening to PF :D

It's similar, but those two are not the only ever "soulful solos over a synthesizer pad" bits in all music ever. And btw, if you like that kind of stuff, you should give Ayreon a try, beginning with The Dream Sequencer.

If you line up the beginning note in TROAE with the buzz in WTTM, the intros are the exact same length, ie the vocals come in exactly when the full band comes in. Spooky......... Mulder.

True, but the underlying chord progressions/tonal shifts in said synth pad are incredibly similar to 8vm's, nearly identical in some places (I haven't actually mapped them out, so I can't say for certain).

If you think that's spooky, listen to Ocatavrium while watching The Wizard Of Oz.

Or listen to Images and Words while playing Sonic 2. Or listen to Train of Thought while watching the original Transformers cartoon movie. SHIT JUST GOT REAL.

Well, if you're just going to play the one-up game, then I guess I'll have to stop holding back and just go straight for the big guns:  Honor Thy Father on repeat while watching the My Little Pony movie.

And I thought that hearing "Vacant" while Optimus Prime died and passed on the Matrix of Leadership was heart wrenching, but that sir, takes the proverbial cake.

You indirectly make a point I hadn't considered:  It may take the proverbial cake.  But it doesn't necessarily take the mechanical cake from another planet that can transform into a robot.  So maybe I need to rethink this just a bit...

To me it always sounded like a mistake, still does  but someone said that is how is soundded al tour long. I only was at the Score Show and since they didn't edit out of the DVD or cd is must not be a mistake, but what is the point of it?
