Title: DTF, gimme your best ballads!
Post by: RG93 on July 25, 2011, 08:57:25 AM
As per thread title, show me what you've got!

I'm a sucker for a good ballad (cheesy or not) , but my collection is seriously lacking.

Here are some of my favourites to use as a reference:

DT - Disappear, Hollow Years, Vacant
Queensryche - Anybody Listening? , Someone Else? , Silent Lucidity (QR is my favourite band for ballads)
PT - Collapse the Light into Earth (unsure if considered), Lazarus, Lips of Ashes
Pink Floyd - Hey You, Comfortably Numb, The Great Gig In The Sky
A7X - I Won't See You Tonight Pt. 1 , Strength of the World

If straight up awesome ballad is what you're looking for, look no further than "Wasted Time" by the Eagles. I LOVE this song.
If you want something along the lines of the style of music you have listed, I'd suggest:

"Love Hurts" - Nazareth
"I Remember You" - Skid Row
"Who Wants to Live Forever" - Queen
"Sister Christian" - Night Ranger
"High Hopes"- Pink Floyd

I mention In The Middle Of A Heartbeat by Helloween; it is a really awesome, if very 80s-ish ballad from the 90s.

    :metal yeah, all almost all Helloween ballads have that good 80's feel, don't You think? A Tale That Wasn't Right, Your Time, Forever And One, even Light The Universe are so great!

I thought he was joking. Awful song.

I love a cheesy 80s style power ballad.

Joe Satriani- Crying, The Forgotten Part II

Alice Cooper- You And Me, I Never Cry, Only Women Bleed, How You Gonna See Me, The Quiet Room, Millie And Billie, Only My Heart Talkin', Love's A Loaded Gun, Burnin' Our Bed.

Aerosmith- Janie's Got A Gun, The Other Side, Cryin', Crazy.

Tyketto- Standing Alone

Giant- I Can't Let Go, I'll See You In My Dreams

Danger Danger- fugitive,

Gotthard- Falling, The Call,

Firehouse- Love Of A Lifetime,

Pink Cream 69- That Was Yesterday,

Extreme- More Than Words, Seven Sundays, Tragic Comic

Queen, Jealousy, Lily Of The Valley, Dear Friends, You Take My Breath Away, Who Wants To Live Forever, TATDOOL, Show Must Go On.

Meat Loaf- Two Out Of Three, Read 'em And Weep, Objects In The Rear View Mirror, Left In The Dark (though Steinman's version is better)

and lots of Bon Jovi songs.

Queen, Jealousy, Lily Of The Valley, Dear Friends, You Take My Breath Away, Who Wants To Live Forever, TATDOOL, Show Must Go On.

Right on with your props to Queen, but your forgot Spread Your Wings and Teo Torriatte.  Which I guess shows just how good they are at balladry, with so many of their best songs being ballads.  Plus my favorite part of Bohemian Rhapsody is the ballady beginning/ending.

Also, I really adore Babe I'm Gonna Leave You.  Led Zep's version of it, obviously.

And Child In Time.  You can't forget that one.

Coheed and Cambria has a lot of great ballads: The Light & The Glass, Wake Up, Mother Superior and Pearl of the Stars.  Also Claudio can turn almost any of their songs into a ballad with a good acoustic version (see Elf Tower New Mexico on the recent SSTB anniversary tour).

Also, our very own Dream Theater has a ton of great ballads.  Aside from what the OP already listed,  Another Day, Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, Take Away My Pain, Anna Lee, The Spirit Carries On, Goodnight Kiss and Wither all spring to mind.

Not really sure if all these would qualify as "ballads", but they are certainly softer songs, most of them are very scaled down:

Oceansize - The Frame
Radiohead - Videotape
Radiohead - Pyramid Song
Porcupine Tree - Trains
Opeth - Isolation Years
Dredg - Sang Real
Anathema - One Last Goodbye
Neil Young - Old Man
Blackfield - Lullaby
Ulver - EOS
Pain of Salvation - This Heart of Mine
The Dear Hunter - Home
Thrice - Digging My Own Grave
The Tallest Man on Earth - Love is All
The Pineapple Thief - Snowdrops
Eisley - Just Like We Do
No-Man - All Sweet Things
Amplifier - White Horses at Sea/Utopian Daydream
Modest Mouse - The World at Large
Kaki King - Life Being What It Is

A few that comes to mind, there are more probably.

Yeah mate, I could have gone on for hours.  Love those other Tage ones, there's still a few more too.  Wasp simply has some of the best ballads I've ever heard; The Idol, Breathe, Heaven's Hung in Black, Forever Free, What I'll Never Find, Hallowed Ground, and the list goes on.

I see you metioned Danger Danger - Fugitive also.  I gotta say, that is simply one of, if not the greatest melodic rock album I've heard in about the last 5 years, such a perfect album.

Strength of the World isn't a ballad. I'm not a big fan of ballads, but since Extreme is one of my favorite bands I got to mention Hole Hearted. It's more of a folk song though.

Pigs on the Wing by Floyd is a good one too.

Okay.  These aren't ALL 80's tunes, but most are.

Cinderella - Heartbreak Station
Poison - Every Rose (though I detest it)
Warrant - Heaven, I Saw Red
L.A. Guns - The Ballad of Jayne
Enuff Z'Nuff - Fly High Michelle
Whitesnake - Is This Love
Slaughter - Fly to the Angels
Winger - Miles Away
Night Ranger - Goodbye, Sister Christian
Bon Jovi - Dead or Alive, Never Say Goodbye, I'll Be There For You
White Lion - When the Children Cry
Europe - Carrie
Cheap Trick - The Flame
Steelheart - I'll Never Let You Go
Firehouse - When I Look Into Your Eyes

Bad English - When I See You Smile
McAuley Schenker Group - Anytime (A personal favorite)
Extreme - More Than Words
Mr. Big - To Be With You
Sheriff - When I'm With You
Def Leppard - Love Bites

Eh.  That's plenty.  Also, I'll go out on a limb and say that Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is one of the original power ballads.

Warrant's I Saw Red  is a great song. And I'm also a fan of the MSG Anytime. And from Winger I'd go for Who's The One from Pull.

From the pop world- Unbreak My Heart by Toni Braxton is a great song.

And here's a link to the Giant song from my earlier post. Dann Huff is a great singer and guitarist.

Better not read my sig then... It's a good ballad- played to death of course, but I still like it. Poison's best ballads were Fire And Ice and Lay Your Body Down On Me, both from when they had good guitar players.

You know what? If your talking about ballads... you gotta mention BOYZ II MEN. They made some of the best and smoothest songs in the 90s. A lot of their ballads include

End of the Road
It's So Hard To Say Goodbye
Down On Bended Knee
Water Runs Dry
I'll Make Love To You
A Song For Mama

And there's some good ones on Don's solo album (Up from the Ashes), although I can't remember the titles right now.

Ahhhhh, Savatage, the masters of the power ballad.

I can think of a lot of bands that were good at writing metal ballads; WASP, Scorpions, Winger, Yngwie, Symphony X; hell, even DT themselves have a few good ones, but seriously, between When the Crowds are Gone, Believe, All That I Bleed, Alone You Breathe, Back to a Reason and countless others, there is no doubt in my mind that Savatage writes the best ballads.  :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

I got a whole playlist dedicated to power ballads.  In the 80's, no credible hard/glam rock band could do an album without 2 or 3.  Some I didn't catch mentioned already

Skid Row - Quicksand Jesus, Wasted Time
Heart - Alone
Damn Yankees - High Enough, Where you Goin Now
Whitesnake - Sailing Ships, Now You're Gone
Brighton Rock - One More Try
Giant - I'll See You in my Dreams
Warrant - Heaven
Tesla - What You Give
Steve Perry - Oh Sherrie
Black Crowes - She Talks to Angels
Halen - Can't Stop Loving You, Not Enough

And the ultimate ballad from The Bodyguard - I Will Always Love You

Actually its pretty much a tie with Take Hold and Eyes of a Stranger for me though.

I consider it their best song by far but, I've never really thought of it as a ballad. Maybe without the end section I would think of it as a ballad but, that part is straight rippin' ass metal. No Sanctuary is an amazing song as well as I Will Remember but, neither of those songs feel as emotionally driven as London to me.
